View Full Version : Stevie & Christine in Nashville
could it be they are recording some (SN's) parts of the album in Nashville?
and that we will get that album before the tour after all? (pretty please let it be true..........)
Christine, Dave Stewart, Stevie and Waddy were all reportedly (or self-reportedly in DS case) flying to Nashville some time this morning.

Don't forget this is how we found out that Stevie was making a new record and that Dave was producing and we also found out from "Instagram" that FM was at the village...

On way to Nashville, Tennessee this morning :) http://t.co/KIBq2W4sGK
— Dave Stewart (@DaveStewart) April 19, 2014

Per Dave S's Facebook, he's spending a few weeks in Nashville. And speaking of Nashville, you lot may be interested in this from Instagram which was posted 15 hours ago. Thanks to @justlikehome on Twitter for finding it. The very top of the photograph is cropped but it was just addressed to the girl whose Instagram account it is. And yes, it DOES say Go Your Own Way.
So we have Dave, Waddy and apparently Christine in Nashville.

I lifted part of the thread from the "Stevie Section"

Off to Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday with Waddy Wachtel

Well this could be interesting...I wonder who else will be there?
Maybe Stevie is recording some tunes with Lady A.

Thanks for the info.I guess he loves it there. There is alot of music action there.I wonder if Stevie will get invited to join his circus.LOL...
It seems we now have Christine in Nashville as well...This could be very interesting indeed...

thanks for combining all these in one thread!
with "circus moving to Nashville" seems like they will definitely be working on Stevie's FM songs there. maybe both Christine and Dave will co-write with her this time around. Christine seems to be happy, inspired, and on the roll, she can hopefully find some lyrics in SN's journals for which she can write music!

The fact that Stevie and Christine are in Nashville TOGETHER is a good thing:nod:...
It's possible that this is not FM related and simply "the girls" on a weekend getaway hanging out with Dave and Waddy...Or they may work on a few things while they are in town...One thing is for certain Dave tweets about everything so we should be kept up to date with what's going on...

please don't pour cold water on my [finally!] optimistic outlook. i want that album out!
yeah Stevie and Christine both don't have families they need to spend the holiday with, but Dave Stewart has, and relatively young kids if i remember correctly. would he really go to Nashville (where people go to record music ;)) for a weekend with these women if it wasn't work related? he just came back from working on another project in Jamaica. i choose to think this is great news, and why SN was not really much around with FM in the studio (although i really don't understand that attitude if they are really a band - i guess they are really more just a business than a band these days, at least as far as SN is concerned ) - she was waiting for DS to be free so he can help her out. and i think the fact Christine is there with them has to be good news since she can help Dave make those songs more FM/band sounding.

I'm just saying that we don't know for certain yet...
I don't know why people were saying earlier that Christine & Dave wouldn't get along...After all they both have that "English thing" going on and at least they have that in common...

Someone had Christine write GYOW on that autograph. That's funny. I'm sure Lindsey has been asked to write Don't Stop on things before.

I never thought they wouldn't get along. Just worried about what him working on her songs would sound like.
At any rate, I don't think that Stevie and Christine would be hanging out together socially in Nashville. Los Angeles, maybe, but not Nashville.

A lot of people thought the same thing when they learned that he was working on "IYD" ...Personally all I could think of was Dave's 1980's work but that turned out not to be the case...
It doesn't sound like CM was on the same flight as the others...

yeah saw that on his fb as soon as i was done posting about his kids... apparently he's reading my mind. ;)

I don't think his 80s work is in conflict with Stevie's own style. For instance, there's nothing about "Here Comes the Rain Again" and Annie's (sometimes sinister) voice and phrasing that would make me think this man shouldn't work with Stevie and couldn't bring something charismatic out of her. Christine is a different story, though.

But it wouldn't make sense having Waddy on guitar. You don't have someone else on a guitar on a FM record.
Also there are 5 months until the tour starts. They aren't just going to slip a new album in right before it starts. They did it last year with the EP but we knew many months in advance that they planned to get some songs out in time for the tour. With a full album I think we'd already know about it if they were trying to get an album out before the tour and they probably would've waited to use the tour to promote their new album. As it is it's just a reunion tour.

Just because Waddy is there it doesn't mean he's going to be on the new FM record...
"You don't have someone else on a guitar on a FM record"
FM has had a LONG line of guitar players over the years...Just for the sake of argument let's say LB is furious over what Stevie wants in terms of the recording her songs and is unwilling to compromise and refuses to play on her songs and if this were to ever happen (Not that it would) who do you think Stevie would ask to play guitar on her songs...
Back to reality...
Waddy may just be there to help out with arrangements...
Let's face it a new FM record probably won't set any sales records and seeing as how this may be the last FM record why not have a little fun with it...Personally I would love to hear Lindsey and Waddy trading licks on a FM song...
As for the release date I think it will be next spring and this fall tour is just a warm up for bigger things to come...

Here's another possibility: Stevie may finally be working on her next solo project, including songs she wrote after losing her mother. There was talk a couple years ago that she was interested in working on a country-inspired CD. If you consider her recent experience with Lady A, combined with a trip to Nashville with her favorite producer (Dave Stewart), Waddy and Christine, maybe that's what they're working on?

There's a marked difference between Christine and Stevie, for me. For Stevie, even before I heard IYD, I thought Dave would be a good match for her, based on the Eurythmics. I didn't like the Everybody Loves You snippet, but I did like the full song.
I don't care what Dave does with Stevie and I don't care who she gets to work on her FM songs. I just don't think he would be a good match for Christine and Everybody Loves You is one of the songs that confirms that for me, as does Cheaper Than Free and his work with Tom Petty.

If Stevie is working on a Solo project what does that say about the FM record?[/QUOTE]
Stevie has worked on her own solo projects simultaneously with FM throughout her entire career. Her tribute to her mother was going to be her next project before this came up and since it looks like she may be tied to FM for 2-3 years, she may be feeling that she only has a short window to work on it before their worldwide tour, new album, more touring, etc.
Dave and she have very good songwriting chemistry and he's very supportive of her creative process. Lindsey and she have a long history of conflict whenever they work together--especially when he produces her projects.
Personally, I don't care who she works with as long as she creates something. When she's in songwriting mode, she'll have more to contribute to FM than when she's not working on her music and if she's happier in Nashville working with her closest friends for the next month before FM becomes all-consuming, wouldn't everyone benefit?
What does Martina McBride have to do with it?
she owns that studio (together with her husband). that's why i posted the link to it.
it looks like she may be tied to FM for 2-3 years, she may be feeling that she only has a short window to work on it before their worldwide tour, new album, more touring, etc.
there wouldn't be more touring after the album if she was in the studio for the last 2 months with the rest of the mac, get the record over with, and tour the record on this tour.
now since she's just starting, we will have to wait for the album, it's cemented that this tour will be a third in a row (you hear that Lindsey? you want to still be relevant?? well, honey you are not! you - with FM - are just a sad nostalgia act happily making truckloads of money with 3 greatest hits tours in a row :distress: ). FM touring could have been done and over with by the next summer and everybody could have gone back to solo. but now the record won't come out till after this newest GH tour, and then FM will have a reason to tour another 2 years.
so if Stevie wanted solo time as soon as possible (like next year!), she should have gotten FM recording done and over with and use this tour to introduce new songs. now she won't have any solo time for the next 4 years. how is that good for anybody other than FM's stuffed pockets (and i really don't care about those!)?

It didn't take long for our excitement to turn into another thing to gripe about. Can we all just chill? I really think Stevie is getting some demos into pretty polished shape so that she can be sure she will be happy about the way they turn out on the FM record. What is happening now is right in line with what LB said a while back about Stevie figuring out the how and when of her songs. It makes no sense she would start a solo album that couldn't be finished before she commits to a lengthy FM world tour. I also can't fathom that Christine would fly to Nashville for something that wasn't going to be incorporated into Fleetwood Mac.
It didn't take long for our excitement to turn into another thing to gripe about.
that's what we are here for, no? :D
PS my hope is if i gripe enough maybe that FM album will miraculously come out before the tour, like Beyonce's. :p

Yes, and That's the reason why I don't hold my breath for this project. The flat and faceless mediocre result of IYD doesn't make my blood rush. Now, the EP didn't either, but I hold Lindsey responsable for the fact that he just recorded those 'commercial popstyle' songs to seduce Stevie back into the studio for an FM album. He even used Froome to give her the security of not being in ayatolla's only hand. This is not going to be a FM album, but the next compromise of a compromise that won't have a real face.

Lindsey's songs were a lot stronger than Stevie's on Say You Will. (Sorry folks but he thumped her in the songwriting department on that album.)
I'm glad she is working on songs with Dave. Her lyrics are less flakey and the songs are stronger. Plus, there is more variety. It seems as though she was just imitating herself before IYD. With that said, I want Lindsey to be involved in the production. I want the album to sound like Fleetwood Mac.

Exactly!!! What is everyone going to do if Christine likes working with Dave and he ends up being involved with her songs or even writes a few FM songs with her???

No one will ever go back to solo. That's just the way it is. It's just going to be FM from now on.

i know. :distress: :(:mad::rolleyes::eek:
This is not going to be a FM album, but the next compromise of a compromise that won't have a real face.
yup! and they'll get next 5 years of touring out of it, and LB will go around preaching his spiel how this album proves they are not only a nostalgia act. whatever, man.
complain... lol
but of course! :D

Dave is great with some artists who bring an edge, but when they don't, I think he subtracts from them rather than enhances.
I don't care if he is respected in the business or not. I used to have those albums he did with Rhona Mitra and I detested them. I also dislike a lot of his Tom Petty stuff, it's about half and half. I thought he would be good with Stevie, but don't think he would be any good with Christine. I think the results would be horrid.
But the fact is, Dave will not be producing any of Christine's songs. He may produce some songs that she sings on and I hope all of his fans enjoy it.

Someone anonymously posted the following on fleetwoodmacnews.com back in February; I wonder how reliable (if at all), this information is?

SN has submitted a new song called ''Hit And Run'' and MF loves it, very rocking, lots of different ways the title is used in the song- about love affairs, being on stage, recording, having to leave someone or something, hooks galore and rather s straightforward lyrical thread throughout the song.
I hope we get to hear it. Soon! "Hit And Run''- 2/8/2014
I can verify the song, "Hit and Run" and also another track called "Whenever You're Ready."

I didn't even like what he did with Stevie. I have nothing against the guy, but it seems from the IYD doc that the reason Stevie thinks he's so great is that he never tried to criticize her in any way, shape, or form... And that includes constructive criticism. However, I think she needs constructive criticism to do her best work. If he won't give it to her, I don't want him producing a Mac album.... not even some of it.

If Dave *IS* involved, it's nothing that's not been talked about before between members of the band...
From 2009:
How far along are you in planning a new Fleetwood Mac album?
We aren't far along in any specific sense. My mantra is to work on my dynamic with Stevie. She was a little uncomfortable when we got on the road last time, for whatever reason. Part of it was that she missed Christine, part of it was that I was getting 50 percent of the face time onstage and she wasn't used to having a guy get all that space. I think it threw her context out a little. So this time around I am very much wanting to make everyone as comfortable as possible and have that be the most important thing. But we have discussed, when this tour is done, going into the studio. The only specific we know is that we are leaning toward finding an outside producer. I think it would help to have an overviewer. It was pretty hard taking the reins last time. Not so much with the music but with the band politics.
Have any producers in mind?
We had a short list, but I have no idea. We've talked about everyone from Daniel Lanois to Dave Stewart to Rick Rubin. That pretty much runs the gamut of approaches. We have to meet with a few people and see how it feels.
Still amused by Dave actually calling in to talk to Lindsey (when he did his Rockline interview) about the SnL/Dave and Annie parallel back in 2008, lol.

That song is full of wretched lyrics. "What's deeper than a deep well? The love into which I fell" is another demonstration that not all the fruits of their collaborations were stellar. I actually enjoy several songs on IYD, but it was a step down from TISL and I blame that partly on a producer who didn't challenge her. However, I can see why Dave would not be the person to help her with lyrics. She won't let anyone give her constructive criticism on her lyrics if what we see on the docs is any indication. That's too bad. Even Shakespeare had collaborators, after all!

You know poor Lindsey had to bite his tongue hard not to give a snarky reply to that line. She'd left herself wide open.
In all seriousness, I love Stevie's lyrics much of the time. I think she's an incredible songwriter. Along with her expressive voice, that's why I'm such a huge fan. That said, I think her refusal to listen to constructive criticism has led to large missteps that would not have occurred if she had been more open to feedback from other people.
Dave surrounded her with pillows to keep a smile on her face, but the best songwriting is never done is a cocoon.

Totally agree.I think Lindsey goes too far with her sometimes due to their personal past but at the same time she needs a little constuctive criticism.Stevie loves to be in charge and Dave Stewart was just kinda like a fly on the wall and didn't make any waves. The whole process therefore of IYD was a combination of total control and fun, fun, fun. As A result I thought IYD was a dud except for a few songs.:shrug:She even said that all Dave had to do was look at her face and if he saw any displeasure in her expression he would switch gears. Now that's control!Or he's just a p....y:sorry:

When it comes to Stevie's solo career, she's the boss- plain & simple. If she doesn't like a particular producer, style of working, or sound, it's her prerogative and even her duty to fix those issues. I think after recording under unabashedly domineering men for decades, it was Stevie's turn to take the reigns on her solo music. And that's just what she did for In Your Dreams. I personally think the end product was fantastic- it was probably the purest incarnation of Stevie as an artist that we've ever heard. Yes, there are clunkers on In Your Dreams. But Stevie has recorded clunkers since Buckingham Nicks onward.
That being said, Fleetwood Mac is an entirely different animal. Christine & Lindsey seem to totally feed off the musical conflict of working out songs. It brings out the best in both of them creatively. They challenge & respect each other musically. It's sort of like musical crossfit for them. This back & forth is part of what makes Fleetwood Mac rise to greatness.
Stevie has admitted since the 1970s that she doesn't care for that sort of thing when it comes to her own music. She doesn't like tampering with her vision, changing/paring her lyrics, etc. She brings forth a flower bud and expects Fleetwood Mac to simply provide the water which allows it to bloom. This is probably why she's been so reticent to record with the band again, especially after the empowering & affirming stint with Dave Stewart. For the first time in her career, she got to work exactly as she'd always dreamed. Now she has to go back to being 1/5 of a group. Which means she has less of a say in the music that has her name on it, and in the end, back to compromise.
Does this mean I think Dave Stewart should produce Fleetwood Mac? Absolutely not. I think it'd be disastrous. Fleetwood Mac needs creative friction, not just a yes man. I also foresee it being a trainwreck if Lindsey produces his & Christine's songs, but Dave produces Stevie's. I think ideally for me, Lindsey should produce everyone's songs with another producer who will provide a second opinion.

And that's why she likes it so much and, at this point in her career, she should definitely be putting out albums that she likes that aren't constructed to either appeal to the masses or to any producer's vision.
So, I have no problem with IYD. I just think that Dave is as good as his source material and, until they split up and I saw their subsequent work and could assess them separately, I didn't know how much more Annie Lennox actually brought to their combo.

Here's how I feel about "Cheaper Than Free": It's a bad song that I nevertheless sort of enjoy. As for IYD in general, when it first came out I thought it was Stevie's best work in decades. Today, though, I rarely listen to anything from it other than "For What It's Worth," which I do love. I think my high appraisal of IYD was just a result of that initial new-album excitement. "New Orleans," "Moonlight" and especially "Wide Sargasso Sea" are just horrendous.
I'm glad Dave Stewart helped make the recording experience a pleasant one for Stevie, but the result isn't something I want to listen to very often, with the exception of maybe three tracks.

Now there's a realistic reading of what is IYD. I'm very glad too, that Dave brought her back to recording in good collaboration, and relaxed spirit. But working with Buckingham has never been that way. If we want a good FM album with these five, there has to be a little tension between them. Chemistry is not the same thing as pampering eachother and make it a smooth and happy time. Ofcourse, you have to find balance, which obviously has not always been there in the past, but walking away from friction is not going to bring good art. Lindsey must be there. So should Mick be? Ofcourse I want John there too, but he can take his time now.
It's just a shame that Stevie doesn't want to build songs with Lindsey from the ground up. I hope she will do that together with Chris, but I hoped Lindsey would be there to play guitar.
Sorry Louielouie2000, I just read your excellent post (minus the Hail for IYD, ;-) ) this is basicly a repetition of that what you wrote. But in my own dutch english.

Brief tangent, not directed at anyone... I always find it fascinating that most fans seem to want Lindsey's vision for his music to be unobstructed by outside producers, influences, etc. They want pure, unadulterated Buckingham. Yet, it seems to be the general consensus that Stevie's vision needs someone to edit it, strengthen it, make it "more coherent," and so on.
Granted, Stevie does need help bringing her music to fruition. She's not a multi-instrumentalist like Lindsey. She's not an arranger like he is. She doesn't have his production skills. But, all that said, she knows how she wants her songs to sound. And she certainly knows what she wants her songs to convey, and how she wants to use her lyrics to express that.
I loved that Dave made that possible for Stevie. He provided what she needed from a production stand-point, but he let her vision come through as unfiltered by his own lens as possible. 'In Your Dreams' may not be a perfect album, but it's a pretty damn terrific one, and I never tire of listening to it.
As for Fleetwood Mac... I don't think there has to be tension for them to create great music as a band. That's become their mythology. They've bought into it as much as we do. Yet fantastic music can be created without conflict or friction. So if they have to embrace a new approach to recording -- one designed to keep strife at a minimum so that everyone's willing to participate -- I'm all for it.

But working with Buckingham has never been that way. If we want a good FM album with these five, there has to be a little tension between them.
And this point is not lost on Stevie. She's said the same thing herself in fact, about her and Lindsey creating good music through the, due to the, friction. She recognized that their songs would be pallid without it. She knows that, but I guess she would just prefer not to make good music with FM anymore, at that price, and thinks that life is too short for the stress.
I'd like all of them to do it together, but if it's not feasible, I'll take 4 working together and Stevie doing more of her own thing. If Christine is there playing piano, all the better.

Well for a Fleetwood Mac song I do think Lindsey should have input on the arrangement and production of Stevie's songs. If she wants her songs unfiltered she can do a solo album. I want Lindsey's input on Christine's songs too.
And if there is no tension in this band than either you have yes men or you happen to have people who agree on everything...which isn't going to happen.

johnnystew, I like your perspective! Stevie had a phenomenal experience writing songs with Dave Stewart and she had such a positive year long journey working with Dave on creating and bringing IYD to fruition. If Dave is her choice to help with her songs for a new FM album, why not? I love IYD and I think it is right up there with her Bella Donna debut album. So excited to have FM put out a new album with the "five fireflies."

I don't think that it has to be an either/or situation. The band members don't have to be unhappy, and they don't have to work with "yes" men (Dave Stewart is certainly not some mere "yes" man).
I also don't think that an outside producer on Stevie's songs is going to preclude Lindsey from offering input on various elements, or from bringing his unique style. His stamp is unmistakable on "Solder's Angel," for example, and yet Dave Stewart was the producer.
And if the entire band is playing on her tracks (which I have no reason to believe they wouldn't), it's still going to sound like Fleetwood Mac, even if Lindsey's not producing. (He didn't have a hand in producing the white album, and that was still pretty fantastic.)

Pure Buckingham is not what I ever stood for in FM. I know you are not directing at anybody, Stew! but still! I even suggested Jack White or Jim O' Rourke (Sonic youth) as a producer for his soloalbums in person to him.
I don't care who's producing, as long as it is someone with a vision on engineering and who can work with LB himself. So a strong character. For the rest I want the band to build songs together. And of course, with Lindsey's approach to songwriting, he needs to ensure a Fleetwood mac sound fitting in the timeframe. That's vision. That, and his ability to arrange, I want a friggin fleetwood mac record, made by the 5. the last one was called Mirage. Or maybe even Tusk.

I'm sure he had a big hand in arranging the songs though. But that's what I mean. It can't be just purely Stevie's vision in FM. The band is going to change it just by playing on it. They'll never just be side musicians to play the parts Stevie tells them to play. And they, Lindsey especially, will always have strong opinions. So I don't believe it's possible for them to make an album that's rainbows and sunshine because they all have egos and there will be conflict and tension. It's inevitable. Stevie doesn't have to deal with anybody else's ego on solo albums. If she's looking to avoid all that entirely and have another experience like IYD then she shouldn't be recording with the band. Putting Dave Stewart in the equation isn't going to magically make that happen.

Hello all---
That being said, Fleetwood Mac is an entirely different animal. Christine & Lindsey seem to totally feed off the musical conflict of working out songs. It brings out the best in both of them creatively. They challenge & respect each other musically. It's sort of like musical crossfit for them. This back & forth is part of what makes Fleetwood Mac rise to greatness.
This is exactly what I’ve been thinking. Perfectly stated.
If writing with Dave makes Stevie happy, then I hope she continues to do so to her heart’s content. And I don’t even mind if she brings those songs to the band…
…as long as Dave doesn’t produce the sessions. His sound is a fine match for Stevie’s solo work, but not a Fleetwood Mac record.
And the possibility of the album being a combination of songs from two different sessions [Lindsey and the band on one hand, Dave’s sessions on the other] is bad news for anyone hoping for a last great album. It might have a few great songs, but it’s hard to combine different sessions overseen by different producers into one cohesive album.
I agree that the interaction---and part of that is the friction---is what makes the magic. And I don’t think Lindsey’s music should be immune to input from the others. If he intends to dish it out, he should be ready to take it, too.
If he includes a stupid lyric in a song---and let’s face it, he’s written some silly ones over the years---he should be prepared for it to be criticized by the rest of the band, including Stevie. The back and forth is what makes a band a band. Otherwise, you can just do it all yourself [like a lot of Lindsey's solo work] or call Dave Stewart and some backing musicians. Neither of those options comes with a fraction of the magic that Fleetwood Mac brings.
It’s also funny that Stevie’s Dylan defense was noted. When I first saw DESTINY RULES, I nearly laughed out loud when she said that to Lindsey, who was, himself, clearly biting a hole in his lip to keep from shooting back a blunt response.
The fact that she would compare herself to Dylan is pretty funny, really. I was discussing this with a friend who’s a music critic for a major US newspaper, and he told me that Dylan himself used to ask for and get criticism from famed poet Allen Ginsberg. “It’s a shame she doesn’t see the value in having somebody question the process,” my friend said. And, in Stevie’s defense, it might be that she’s okay with someone else---Christine, maybe---questioning her lyrics. But not Lindsey. And that would be understandable, given their history.
How can John, Christine, Mick and Stevie NOT sound like Fleetwood Mac???
Because John, Christine, Mick, and Stevie aren’t Fleetwood Mac. They are 4/5 of the group. And if Dave Stewart is behind the board, they won’t sound like Fleetwood Mac much at all. They’ll sound like Dave Stewart producing a band that sounds a little like Fleetwood Mac.
And, for the record, I want Waddy’s “set-up.” Cool old amps.

I'm sorry, Mike -- I didn't mean to imply that I thought (or expected) Stevie's new Mac songs should be purely her vision. I'd expect and want the other Maccers to have input, too. I suspect Stevie would also want that.
I just feel that it's very possible, and still creatively viable, for Lindsey's input into Stevie's songs to come from his role as a musician in the band and not as a producer. With someone else producing, Lindsey can still contribute musically in a significant way, but without the added tensions that seem to arise when he's also wearing the producer's hat.
So, no, I don't expect things in the Mac world to ever be all sunshine and rainbows. But, as I see it, there are absolutely ways to keep the negatives to a minimum and have a less angst-ridden working environment, while still creating some great music.

If she is in fact recording a new solo album I would like The Dealer to finally be recorded and released. It's one of the more enjoyable (and good groove) demos she has lying around. Chris can play some funky piano for it and Stevie's voice could still do it justice. That is really all I have to say about this one. I'll listen to whatever she comes up with, but IYD was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Anything that is inspired by Twilight, no matter how small a part of the whole it is, cannot be too good.

I even suggested Jack White or Jim O' Rourke (Sonic youth) as a producer for his soloalbums in person to him.
Ooh I like that! I loved his collab with Loretta Lynn. Very different

What truly is a head scratcher to me, are people on this board (in this thread and others), who can't imagine, or actually fathom Dave Stewart co-producing - maybe two or three - Fleetwood Mac tracks. Rob Cavello & John Shanks co-produced tracks on SYW - their involvement didn't make the songs any less Fleetwood Mac-y  Mitchell Froom co-produced "Sad Angel" & Miss Fantasy" on "Extended Play", and they sure as hell sounded just like Mac songs! Maybe fans need a reminder that Fleetwood Mac (and Lindsey) have a long history of bringing in co-producers (Richard Dashut, Ken Caillat, Keith Olsen, Elliot Scheiner, etc.) and that the FM world & sound did not come to an end.
And it was Dave Stewart, out of ALL of Stevie's solo producers, that brought Stevie back to her classic & most Mac-y sounding solo record. "Soldiers Angel" and "Annabel Lee" especially. And, yes, it should go without saying, that Stevie is able to branch out and record songs like "Italian Summer", "Everybody Loves You" & "Wide Sargasso Sea" solo, but within FM, I have no doubt they will be sticking to the what works within the confines of what the band is recording.

I think Dave Stewart involvement is a good thing.
And don't forget that he has always been friendly with tons of LA-based musicians - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Lindsey included.
Don't think there's really any drama unfolding. This is a good thing and healthy for the band.

To me, Stevie reviving a demo that old just shouldn't be done. I don't think she did any favors by resurrecting Smile At You, The Tower (Goodbye Baby), or Lady From The Mountain (Moonlight). All those songs either lost their original potency, sound silly with an older woman singing a young woman's songs, or just plain aren't relevant. Plus to me, the Dealer is more of a classic Stevie solo song than a Mac one.
The one older demo that comes to mind which could be brought into the 21st century is If You Were My Love. Still, after the way some of her other old demos turned out after their 21st century transformations, I'm not sure I even wish for that.

I've long advocated for the Mac to bring in an outside producer to augment Lindsey's work. I think the band was at it's best when they had Richard Dashut and/or Ken Caillat at their sides. I think they lost a vital part of their sound when they parted ways with those guys.
However, that doesn't mean I think just any old Joe can step up to the plate & fill their shoes. While I truly adore what Dave Stewart did with Stevie for In Your Dreams, I hold firm to my belief that he would do no favors for Fleetwood Mac. Bottom line, I just think Dave imparts a sound that is way too slick. Yes, I've listened to a coterie of the albums Dave has been involved with, and I still stand by that opinion. Dave's high polish on Stevie's songs adjacent to the songs Lindsey produced for himself and Christine just would sound lopsided. If they're going to bring in an outside producer, at least get him or her on everyone's songs.

Entirely agreed re Smile At You, but I very much like Goodbye Baby, and absolutely adore Moonlight - - indeed, I think it's one of Stevie's strongest songs since Wild Heart. I'd love to hear an updated, fully produced version of If You Were My Love, and also of All The Beautiful Worlds. I'd also love for Stevie to record The Dealer, but agree that it would be most appropriate for a solo album. No matter what, at this point, with still more than 5 months to go until the tour, I'm thrilled that Stevie's (supposedly/hopefully!) in the studio recording. :blob2:

Soldier's Angel" wasn't "slick" in production. Not at all! And that's the way Stevie wanted it - brutal and ragged. Also, I don't buy your argument, at all, about Dave's imput sounding lopsided against whomever is producing/co-producing Lindsey's or Chirstine's songs. Are you kidding me, Lindsey is the maestro of "slick" production. There just are too many examples of that from back to the White album all the way to the effervescent sheen of "Tango!" I am also in the camp that The Dealer needs to be recorded. Why that was left off Bella Donna is beyond me. I think either FM or solo could be killer. I also believe most of her old demos still translate even if people seem attached to its original form. Secret Love, Planets of The Universe, Sorcerer, Moonlight, etc are all fantastic in their current and old forms.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. The Dealer is in that same batch of late 70s/early 80s songs (her creative peak) that would be incredible to hear on an album now. But I bet she'd change the name to "Mistress of My Faith" to downplay a drug reference that media would easily blow out of proportion, "I was a dealer and it wasn't hard."

I know many bands besides FM do this, but I've always thought that a band member serving as producer is inherently fraught with difficulties. A band hires a producer to help them create the album they want. Dave Stewart, working as Stevie's employee, helped her achieve the sound and vision she had for the songs on IYD. Giving those duties to a band member almost strikes me as a conflict of interest. As a producer, Lindsey should help Stevie shape her songs in a way that she likes. But since he is a member of the band, he also has a vested interest in how those songs sound. So what happens when they disagree? It's really no wonder there is often tension.

I think it's best that Lindsey stays out of Stevie's songs. If they are done in concert, then he can play on them in concert just as he does (and it's limited at that) on Stand Back. Calumny, indeed. I just don't want to be bothered with it. I don't want to read about it in interviews. I don't want his name on her songs as a musician or producer. I guess he can sing on them, if someone wants him to, but it really shouldn't be a concern. That was fine when it lasted, but we're 10 years away from SYW and 10 years from now some of them will be octogenerians or dead. I don't want a whole lot of accusations about this album to still be flying around in 2024.
We're only talking about 3-4 songs anyway. Maybe the album won't sound coherent, but if 2/3 of it does, who cares about the rest? I don't. At this point I've given up on having another full Mac album. Even if we only get 8 "Fleetwood Mac" songs, that's better than having none. I just want her to do whatever she is doing in her corner of the world and have fun over there.
I think when we began to dream of Christine returning, many of us always envisioned this album as Tango, not Rumours. Tango, with Christine and Lindsey and then Stevie, separate. I was perfectly happy with Tango and the work Christine and Lindsey did together. For Stevie, hopefully together she and Dave can come up with something somewhat better that WTTRS.
I hope they do this and get an album out in 2015 for the second leg of the tour.
Michele
I acknowledge the various viewpoints pertaining to Dave Stewart's involvement in a Fleetwood Mac recording, but believe some people are underestimating his abilities as a musician and producer. Dave's commercial/pop sensibilities have been consistently referenced within this thread, but he is capable of veering to the left on occasion, particularly in a live context.
If Lindsey embraces Dave's input and is willing to consider co-producing the album (or certain tracks) alongside him, it is possible the results could recall the classic band sound of the 1970's. (I would imagine just about anything would be considered more cutting-edge than the Mitchell Froom production on Extended Play.)
As has already been stated, some of Dave's production work on Stevie’s In Your Dreams album was reminiscent of the FM sound and this didn't go unnoticed by critics at the time of it's release in 2011. "Annabel Lee" and "Moonlight" could definitely have sat comfortably on a Mac album and even the likes of "Secret Love" wouldn't have been out of place. In fact, "Secret Love" is a fine example of Dave conjuring something out of nothing - a very average song made to sparkle.
My primary concern at this stage is whether Stevie can deliver in terms of stellar songwriting and nuanced vocals (as opposed to monotone belting). Trotters crossed...

I think it's pretty apparent that Stevie does not want to work with Lindsey as producer. I think they are getting her basic tracks down with Waddy and others. I'm sure Lindsey will add stuff later, but she doesn't want him around during the formative process.. It would be in her best interest to at least have him add harmonies and some guitar work later. If she doesn't she's going to look like quite the diva. Sorry but my opinion of her will go way down if she doesn't. I'm guessing Christine is putting down her stuff now.

Well, Lindsey certainly could be called a "diva" many x's over the years ;).
Without question, this incarnation of Fleetwood Mac has always been a delicate, fragile, balancing act, and what is occuring now should not be startling to anyone who has been paying close attention since SYW. With Stevie, I believe it comes down to a trust issue. She no longer appears to have any faith & trust to leave her songs soley in Lindsey's hands. She's earned that. And arguably, it could be debated that Lindsey hasn't worked his brand of brilliance on her songs since "Gypsy." And that his so-called studio "wizardry" has grown tiresome. Sometimes a band needs a new outside producer to get out of its own way, out of the same zone. To grow. Linsdey looks at times to be stuck on his island.
So if Stevie is indeed planning on polishing up her songs/demos to the point of finalization (with Dave, Waddy & Christine) - then have Lindsey layer "some" guitar & backing vocals to her tracks, it would be just like he did to her on his (GOS) solo tracks that became SYW songs. We could be witnessing a full circle moment.

could it be they are recording some (SN's) parts of the album in Nashville?
and that we will get that album before the tour after all? (pretty please let it be true..........)
Christine, Dave Stewart, Stevie and Waddy were all reportedly (or self-reportedly in DS case) flying to Nashville some time this morning.
Don't forget this is how we found out that Stevie was making a new record and that Dave was producing and we also found out from "Instagram" that FM was at the village...

I found it in the "Discographies" section here as well...Interesting little tidbit...
Christine is probably quite sympathetic to Stevie's plight -after all, she recorded her contributions for the Time album in a different continent. I would love for them to truly bond during these Nashville sessions. A co-write or two would thrill me (even if the result was terrible).
I would imagine Christine might have a newfound respect for Stevie's work ethic and knowledge within the studio these days. Not so much of the flaky princess or "mad songwriter" methinks...

I still have to wonder if we aren't blowing this all out of proportion. Stevie could just be going to Nashville with Dave & Waddy to lay down some demos so she'll have fresh product to bring into Fleetwood Mac. That seems to be a pretty likely scenario. Perhaps Stevie has now heard Lindsey's & Christine's working tracks, and has an idea of the sound/theme of the record. Thus, she has been inspired to get her stuff ready to bring to the table.

Does this sound familiar???
From the "Stevie" thread where it was questioned what they were doing at the Village.
So now I'm starting to think this studio time is more like making demos and working on Christine's chops with Lindsey more than something super serious.
Studio time at The Village is mighty expensive for some demos...
Exactly!!!!!
I'm quite sure the cost of studio time at "Blackbird" is comparable to the "Village" and you're paying to fly an entourage from L.A.
If these are only demos they could be done at Stevie's house or the High Tower or somewhere closer to home and for a lot less money...
It's quite possible that Christine is there because she sensed an impending train wreck between SN & LB and stepped in and offered to help Stevie work on her songs instead of LB...

Dave did confirm to a some fans on FB via PM, that he was in Nashville to work on Stevie's tracks for upcoming "FM project". I don't understand why people are still in denial. I'm 99.9% certain that Dave will end up being credited (at minimum) "co-producer" on Stevie's FM tracks if this project is ever released - she's been pretty firm about having Dave produce the Mac if they were going to make another record since IYD. So at the very least she is going to get her way on her songs, and not have another SYW experience. It makes sense that Christine and the band, were at Village recorders, working out Christine's material, possibly Stevie left some of her demos as well. Now Stevie is picking up where the band left off, and adding her contributions based upon what has already been recorded, ahead of tour rehearsals. However, I still don't have faith FM will release anything until 2015.

I'm not upset at all with any of the above. Whatever works best with her songs. She's dedicated and that's half the battle.

i hope no involvement whatsoever. just look at this thread and others here and all the bitc*ing about SYW, still. i'm sick and tired of it. of course, if he's not involved and SN's songs turn our crappy, i'm sure SN and everybody else will have no problems finding the way to blame him then also.
but basically this:

After seeing the latest info, my guess is that they are working out demos and he is probably co writing/arranging. I'm hoping she will then bring those songs to FM. He did say "upcoming" FM project. I'm sure he's going to produce those songs once they bring them to FM. If she entirely left Lindsey out of the process that would be pretty douchey.

It's tricky, because if we thought they had saturated the market in 2004, what in the world are they doing now? The second leg will be mostly Europe and Australia. There are some places in the U.S. that they aren't hitting this year, but not enough for them to do another full scale tour in the states. So, I wonder what the venues will look like in 2015. I guess if they don't start until the summer time they can do sheds.
Well, anyway, we know we're covered in southern California. They will play here even if they don't play anywhere else:nod:.

Well I think you hit it on the head. Euro/Aus break.. rest of US then break... then 2015/16 tour for new album?? If they do an album, they will definitely have to tour to promote it.

We don't know for sure if and to what extent Lindsey's involvement with Stevie's songs will be so to say she is the one excluding LB at this point is complete speculation because it's entirely possible that because of Stevie's insistence that Dave be involved that Lindsey is the one that is choosing not to be involved in the process...

I have to agree with this. I keep remembering how she included the whole "Bob Dylan" exchange between herself and LB in the IYD documentary. I didn't think it was necessary to include it but Stevie obviously still feels very strongly, 10 plus years later, about that experience. She most likely hasn't let it go.
Having Dave " work" on a few songs can work within the making of a Fleetwood Mac album. If this is a piece of the process to get this album out this year then let it happen.

The whole strain between Stevie and Lindsey regarding her songs goes all the way back at least as far as "Bella Donna"...Remember when they were recording "Mirage" and Stevie gave Lindsey a special signed copy of her debut solo album and Lindsey wouldn't even touch it and it ended up sitting on the floor leaning on a wall for weeks until Stevie finally crossed out Lindsey's name and gave it to someone else...I realize that was a long time ago but I don't think his attitude towards her songs has changed much over the years and if it has it was fairly recent...

There was that one time when Lindsey actually complimented Trouble In Shangri-la. Stevie mentioned it a couple of times during interviews that era - he said to her that it was the best work she'd ever done! He went on to praise John Shanks for doing a great job with Planets Of The Universe. Of course, it took Stevie writing 2 new verses and completely changing the structure of that song for it to really work. She did the same thing magnificently with Lady From The Mountain into Moonlight. That song needed a chorus. And she wrote a beauty. Just took the right kind of "strange" inspiration.

I was thinking about this yesterday... since things were so tense between Stevie & Lindsey directly after 'Rumours,' Tom Moncrieff was the one who helped Stevie with many of her 'Tusk' songs.
According to Annie McLoone, in regards to "Sara" specifically, the band replaced Moncrieff's bass parts with John's, Annie's backing vocals with Lindsey's & Christine's, and then Lindsey added some overdubs. She also stated that Tom's original acoustic guitar parts can still be heard, uncredited, on the album version.
Whether they like the song itself or not, I've never once heard fans complain that "Sara" doesn't sound like Fleetwood Mac.

Intriguing. I'm not sure I see that much touring. I think Mick was interviewed (going from vague memory) and alluded to going real slow with Christine by pacing the tour to not be so treacherous. I mean this is her first outing since The Dance Tour. What if she starts to crumble midway through the tour? She turns 71 in July. Not saying she can't do it...time will tell.

The plot thickens. I agree about Christine. My point is that projects slated for 2015 are iffy, past doing europe/oz. If they do not put an album out before or around September, how can they ever have the energy and time for that during a tour schedule? So if they tour the USA thru December, they will want to rest hard. Hit Europe/Oz...even more tired. Doubt they will want to record, then hit the US again in 2015. Just sounds so iffy to me. Too many variables at this stage in the game.

Stevie's full quote, after Lindsey points out the "rule of thumb in writing":
"Well, I don't think you could say that to Bob Dylan, 'cause he would say to you, 'I write what I want to.'"
Despite Gerald's snarky little comment, I don't think I understand Stevie better than she understands herself. But I think it's pretty obvious when looking at the entire comment, that she was making a comparison between how they approach writing, not comparing their levels of talent.
Furthermore, Gerald, when she brought it up in the 'In Your Dreams' documentary, she says there are ways to offer advice and ways not to. She used that exchange with Lindsey as an example of how not to. It wasn't that he dared to criticize The Great Stevie Nicks.
I don't think Stevie's writing is perfect -- there are many instances where I've thought, "yikes, Stevie, you couldn't have come up with a better line than that?" But, hey, you're welcome to view my intentions however you wish.

She was definitely making a connection between her stature as an artist and Dylan's. Because she went to someone who is beyond reproach in terms of lyric writing. Who Dylan is was the point of her singling him out. Not just that there are similarities in their lyric writing approach.

Lindsey is not the problem. Stevie will listen to Dave. She won't listen to Lindsey. Stevie wanted to prove herself as a writer to Dave. She doesn't give a hoot what Lindsey thinks. Hence, she wrote complete songs with Dave and let him help her work them out. With Lindsey, she cops an attitude. The problem is Stevie and the material she came up with for over 20 years - a lot of bad, half baked songs.

It there is indeed a division within the Mac perhaps they should do what Guns & Roses did and release 2 yes TWO records simultaneously...We could have the "Buckingham/Mac" album and the "Fleetwood/Nicks" album...Neither Stevie nor Lindsey would appear on the others "FM" album...Christine is free to choose if she want's to be on Stevie's or Lindsey's record or both records if she want's...Both the G&R records were "Double albums" so if LB or SN want to go there that's on the table as well...Fleetwood Mac has been full of drama from the start so this should fit right in...

You know, that whole segment in Destiny rules where they discuss the tense in the lyric of the song.... I revisited that some time ago, and I still don't understand what's the big deal when a bandmember suggest a small lyrical adjustment. And after the Dylan remark he very humbly steps back. Has Dylan ever wrote a cheaper than free by the way?
Things between Stevie and Lindsey are never about whatever the obvious topic of their conversation is. All their interactions are so laden with baggage from the past that none of us will ever make full sense of what's really being said between them in any given moment. There are all sorts of undercurrents and the way something is said can set things off because of the way something else was once said in the past…. she knows what topics talked about in which way will push his buttons and vice versa…. there are so many layers upon layers of meaning between something as simple as a "hello" between those two that no one will ever really decipher it all. And more often than not when one of them says or does something they are fully aware of how it will set off a reaction in the other one. Don't try to figure it out; just sit back and enjoy the show. ;)

I don't think anyone is denying her the right to do whatever she wants....she can always record a solo album if she wants to....but within a band she has more than just herself to answer to. If she doesn't want to record with Lindsey then I don't see this album happening. I seriously doubt they'll put an album out with Waddy Wachtel on guitars for a third of it.

That's my concern with all of this. Is it truly a Fleetwood Mac album when no Fleetwood Mac musicians are performing or helped construct Stevie's songs? I get it, she's thumbing her nose at Lindsey. But should Mick & John (and possibly Christine) be shoved out of the creative process, too? I just don't like that scenario at all.

I was watching non-LB Fleetwood Mac clips on YouTube yesterday (early years + Billy & Rick videos) and the band sounded great so I don't think the little kick in the butt that Waddy would give them would hurt...

What a surprise. It didn't take much for the divisiveness of each band members fans to take root. And wtf, all three songwriters of this band have contributed their share of turds to a FM record even before Tango. Can we ever move on? The fact that Stevie is recording (along with Christine) is positive news. I never thought that I'd see another FM record again, much less including Christine. When (or if) the record arrives, at least each band members "fan club" can individually revel in their favorite songwriters contribution. A record from anyone is never going to please everyone or every fan. That's impossible. Throw in three very different songwriters in a band - that's a sure recipe for divisiveness & rivalry.

Yes Stevie & Christine working in Nashville is great news and I suspect she is playing peacekeeper by working with Stevie...Dave's twitter has been suspiciously quiet today and I mean not a peep out of him yet so I guess they must be hard at work with whatever it is they are up to...

I'm specifically talking about having Waddy on there without Lindsey. It's not about whether he's good enough it's about Lindsey is the band's guitarist, Waddy is not. Lindsey had a very distinctive style at that. This is a band album. We might as well just put together a compilation of solo tracks if we're going to start using whoever and call it Fleetwood Mac. Its one thing for Waddy to add an additional guitar part and a totally different thing for him to be the only guitarist on the song. It's not just a guest appearance if he's replacing Lindsey as the guitarist.
Also, if indeed they are recording for FM and it's Stevie's decision to leave Lindsey out of it, how would that be keeping the peace? There's no way Lindsey's just like "whatever".
Hopefully, the end game is to have Lindsey involved. Honestly, I doubt Christine would be involved if the rest of the band weren't going to also be involved at some point.

To me, NO ONE here (or as far as we know) honestly knows what is going on with this whole thing. I know that's why we have these boards to discuss things that are happening or not happening with this band. But a lot of this speculation is crazy. Also, the blaming and the back and forth about who's fault it is that they (supposedly) aren't recording together... why don't we just see what happens. Then we can b*tch/discuss that after we get a confirmation of SOMETHING.

I don't disagree. But based on what we know (which is very little), it sounds like the band is -- for the first time in years -- trying to find a way to record without things becoming toxic. At this stage, I am beyond thrilled that they're in the studio in some capacity, and am confident that all five Fireflies will be in the studio together in the near future.

Tom Moncrieff commented in his Q & A on the demos of Stevie's he worked on saying, among other things:
Generally, Stevie felt that if we fleshed out the songs (produced them a bit) they would be more comprehensible to FM. Some of Stevie's piano parts were very syncopated, and without a groove (or beat) underneath they were very confusing to some people. For some reason I was never confused by that and understood where her bars and structure was going, and so I was able to play parts that made things clearer to the listener, that being FM.

For the life of me I can't understand why everyone is on the verge of a stroke over this. Stevie always brings demos to Fleetwood Mac, and she has to enlist a few musicians to get them made. Who was playing on the version of Thrown Down that she brought to the SYW sessions? I can't believe we have jumped to accusations that Stevie won't allow Lindsey on her songs. Mick and John aren't in Nashville....do we think they won't be on her songs either? Why are we using a couple of innocent comments on social media to create drama that may not even exist? Nothing that has happened so far leads me to believe this will be any less of a band album than their previous efforts.

I would have agreed with you in their hey day and even in the nineties, but now it doesn't seem worth it. They want her in the band for touring and if she does that and doesn't want to record with them, I think that's fine. I am happy to let the music press critique the results of that segregated approach to things. I don't think that the outcome (in the eyes of the media) will be all that favorable to Stevie.
The upside is, we get new music. It might not be as much as I'd hoped, in the manner that I wanted, but it's new music that we wouldn't have received otherwise, so I'm pretty happy.
Mick didn't do his column in the Daily Express this week. I would love for him to wrap up his series by giving us some current news on what's going on with FM. If he doesn't, I'm afraid that we'll have to wait for them to start promoting the tour before we hear something and get confirmation -- oh, and read tweets from third parties!

Yep agreed. And regardless, I've always thought Mistress of My Fate was a more dynamic title that by referencing the chorus and tying with the hook would ultimately be smarter in terms of people remembering the song and hopefully buying it anyway.
I suspect Dave Stewart will end up co-producing the Mac album with Lindsey, including Lindsey's own songs. Lindsey has previously conceded that an outside producer would be appropriate for the next band recording and even touted Dave as a contender at one point. He attempted this approach with Mitchell Froom's involvement in 2012, but it wasn't enough to entice Stevie. It's obvious she wants Dave and seemingly, Christine is on board with that decision, at least in respect of Stevie's tracks.
We need to remember that Dave has already produced Lindsey, when he contributed to the recording of "Soldier's Angel" in late 2010. Lindsey apparently was also present for other periods of the In Your Dreams album sessions so would have some insight into Dave as a person and his approach to record making. By all accounts, Dave is a charming man, capable of disarming just about everyone he encounters and this could be the secret to restoring cohesion within the band, or at least between you know who... That said, none of the band members are fools so ultimately, acceptance or non-acceptance of Dave will come down to his musical attributes and production skills.
Say what you will about Dave, he gets things done and if it had not been for him, I doubt In Your Dreams would have even come to fruition (we'd still be waiting for the follow-up to Trouble In Shangri-La!). His encouragement of Stevie will no doubt galvanise her into action and hopefully he will elicit strong work from the petulant one. I honestly think Dave was behind Stevie's superior vocals on IYD, which were a vast improvement upon her work on the TISL and Say You Will albums.
We must remember that Lindsey is keen for this upcoming album to be made so in the absence of being able to cajole Stevie himself, I imagine he's relieved Dave is in the picture. I am confident these two mature men could work well together, without the clashing of egos. Dave could just turn out to be this band’s secret weapon – let’s wait and see…

According to Lindsey, his songs are already recorded and were co-produced by Mitchell Froom. They just need to add Stevie and Christine into the mix, I'm assuming. I don't think he needs Dave Stewart's help with that.
Yes Mike I realise that, but I expect some or maybe all of these Mitchell Froom produced tracks might be deconstructed and re-recorded/produced. At the very least, Christine and Stevie need to contribute whatever their respective parts might be and that might necessitate Dave stepping in at some stage. If the likes of "Sad Angel" and "It Takes Time" were to be included on the album, I would very much welcome some "enhancement" of sorts.

Rockline - 27th August 2008
Dave Stewart joined us last week and, of course, Dave did several albums with Annie Lennox of Eurythmics fame and, um, they had their own situation. So here's the question he left for Lindsey.
D: Hi Lindsey. This is Dave Stewart from Eurythmics and I think we've both shared a similar experience. How is it for you being with somebody and living with somebody who you were in love with and then breaking up and then still being in a band together?
You do have a common experience. *laughs*
L: Oh yeaaaah. *clears throat* Well, you know, that was, uh, a, it was something that defined not only, uh, Fleetwood Mac as a band and to some degree the appeal - You know, that you had these two couples who were breaking up and were somehow rising above that to do what had to be done. But it, you know, on a personal level it was difficult for a number of years because there were never really any time to get closure. Um, you, this person that was, that had moved away from you and that, from whom you had moved away from, was someone you saw every day, and someone you had to try and find your better self on a daily basis for, in terms of producing and - this is similar to Dave's situation too - and to do the right thing for her as opposed to maybe, uh, a more selfish or petty thing. Um, and all of that, I think, left, uh, a certain amount of residue emotionally for a number of years. Uh, I think what happened, uh, was that I tended to focus very heavily on the music, uh, and the rest of my life was kind of closed off and, and it was a fairly narrow focused, you know, existence which was focused only on the music. And it was really only when I was, uh, given the gift of meeting my wife and having children that all of that started to unfold and the walls started to come down. So it was a long road, you know, sort of moving on from some of that. It was not easy.

Most of y'all are so pessimistic it's funny because I'm the opposite. How do we know exactly what's going on? Just speculating for the worst. Maybe Lindsey fleetwood and john are there too. Dave just said him, Stevie, and waddy went together. He didn't even mention Chris.

yes, that was my first thought too. all newer songs on IYD were co-written by either Dave, Neale, or Mike Campbell. Dave and Stevie described several times how their process would go - Dave would pick some lyrics from her journal and start strumming some chords and adding some melody... if she would like it he'd go on and she may join in and add to it, if she wouldn't like it, he'd change direction. that's probably what she loved so much about working with him, plus that Dave would actually take her whole poem (of course, some people listened to the final result and thought many of those songs are way too long), and listen to whether or not she liked what he was doing musically.
for this new album, Lindsey offered that he could co-write some songs with her if she wanted to, but that's probably where their old baggage comes in - she doesn't want to be dependent on him anymore like she was probably a lot in the past, judging from the snippets in the Tusk doc.
it is possible that not only Dave, but maybe Christine can co-write some music to Stevie's poems, and that's why Christine is there with them. or maybe she's there as a "band rep" if you will, since she knows how the other songs on the album sound...

Well we've placed Christine in the same city so we assume she's there for the same purpose. It would be a big coincidence if she's not. I think we're just taking the information that's been given and using some logic to fill in some blanks. Obviously we don't know all the details, but we're having a discussion on the possibilities based on the evidence....it's not like we don't have discussions on this board based on far less. I don't consider that pessimism...evidence so far does not lend itself to the idea that this is a band working together harmoniously...regarding Stevie, anyway. There's no evidence to suggest that Lindsey, Mick and John in Nashville with her....it's possible I suppose....but they probably would've gone along with Christine. Dave mentioned Stevie and Waddy though he didn't mention Christine. Maybe she joined later. We do know he's working on a "Fleetwood Mac project" so it only makes sense. But if he were working with the whole of Fleetwood Mac he probably would've said so. I think that's pretty logical to assume. There's no need to be blindly optimistic for the sake of optimism.
All we have to go on right now is what Lindsey and Christine said last month in interviews and then this bit of activity revealed by Dave Stewart. What they've done in the mean time or may do later on we have no absolutely idea. We can only hope.

I certainly hope there isn't a no tweets order. This is what has generated the most interest/passion and momentum for the band in terms of potential new music. Marketing has to be something they pay attention to this time around - please!
Exactly! Stevie's twitter has just been "Verified" and given it's "blue check" and it is gaining new followers on a daily basis...If "Camp Stevie" were up to date on marketing they would be tweeting about what she/FM are up to...Do they not realize twitter is FREE???

Perhaps but I can also see Dave giving Stevie a hand with writing. I'm not convinced she has a bunch of songs ready to go...poems yes but not songs. That's where the Dave magic comes in. You know, the whole "Lennon/McCartney thing"...
She has plenty of songs ready to go that are in the vault. She may have forgotten about them or maybe she feels they are not relevant anymore or maybe she's hungry to write something new with Dave but that doesn't mean she doesn't have songs ready. In fact, for me she doesn't necessarily need to write anything new save for the song about her mom passing. I think that one in terms of subject matter could be the next Landslide. With respect to her old demos, I crave to hear these recorded with the first 10 being my top favorites:
1) The Dealer/Mistress of My Fate
2) All The Beautiful Worlds
3) If You Were My Love
4) Jimmy Come On Back
5) Love And War/Mix Down
6) Ooh Baby
7) This Is My Cross To Bear
7) Charmed Ones: City Of Hope Song
8) Tied Up (In Promises)
9) One More Tomorrow
10) Chanel Chanel
11) Julia
12) Christian/Spinning Wheels/Mirrow Ball
13) Belle Fleure
14) What Has Rock N Roll Ever Done For You?
15) All The King's Horses
16) Blue Water
17) Castaway
18) Frustrated Love/Mistaken Love/Forsaken Love
19) China Doll
20) Rich Old Lady/Mystical Love
21) She Loves Him Still
22) I Call You Missing
23) Starshine
24) Takes A Long Time
25) Watchdevil
26) 24 Karat Gold (R&B mix)
I would need The Dealer/Mistress of My Fate and the new song about her mom as must-haves. But those two plus any other 4 from the above list would make 6 songs and would equate to her 1/3 of an 18 song album. So she has plenty of songs ready to go - and the point is that I hope these songs get recorded and released someday before she retires. This is my humble request in case anyone from her team reads this.

I think she's already written most of her songs...Since co-writing is her new thing she's probably already written a few with Dave and with any luck a few with Christine and maybe 1 or 2 with Dave & Christine I also think she arrived at Blackbird with some fairly polished demos in hand...
I would think the band is on board with what she is doing or she would not be in Nashville at a studio where time is most likely just as expensive as it is at the Village so I don't see the need for her to dredge up a bunch of 30 year old songs...

if you think back to DR doc, Mick was saying how she went and wrote several new songs because she wanted to be en par with Lindsey who had this great batch of songs. so i would think, considering both Christine and Lindsey are obviously still very inspired and contributing new songs, she would like to show she also has new stuff to contribute.

i don't know about the last record... i don't think Lindsey and Christine think that way necessarily. Lindsey always seems to have a plan for another and another record but not everybody else is onboard, most of the time.

There were several very vocal Stevie fans who were quite upset by Christine's return. They were angered by the fact it would push back another Stevie solo album. Personally, I think that's a bit of a moot point, anyway- I would not have foreseen a Stevie solo album anytime soon even if Christine hadn't returned.
But if you're talking about Christine's work style or ethic... I don't think there's anything to complain about, really. She used to be a roaring sot, but she still put out the most consistently high quality music of the band, crafted pretty much all the band's hits, and has never known to be diva like when it comes to working with the others in the band. She's always seemed more like the mediator vs an instigator. And along with Lindsey, she seems to have put in the most working time in the studio.

I agree. If there is anything that Lindsey loves, it's someone that will sit there with him and give him the time that he puts in. In other words, lets work on these songs together. I can hear the time that CM and LB spent on Mirage and Tango. I don't quite get that vibe on Tusk. He seemed a bit solo on Tusk. But say what you want about Buck, the man puts in the time. I think he respects Christine because she will sit next to him and work.
When I watched the DR docu. I noticed LB was doing a lot of work, then Stevie rolls in with her entourage.. Mick and John float in.. He's making all these important decisions. And he was the one working after hours. (This is what it appeared to me)

Agreed, except I don't think Mick floats. I think Mick will stay there all night with you, if that's what you want. I mean, I've read about Mick and John on WereWolves of London and they weren't the most stable people during the recording. So, we know Mick was high in the studio all that time for FM as well, but he will hang around, for moral support anyway. And he will always mediate between the members and say what you don't want to say to the other one. I think that's why Lindsey loves him so much.
Of course, Lindsey didn't have to work after hours. He just liked it. But Stevie has given SYW interviews where she actually charted their work hours. She would say what time she got in, what time he got in, etc. I don't remember what hours she said now, but she acknowledged that Lindsey was there hours before and after everyone else.

I realize we're veering off topic here, but I don't place any blame in Mick for that whole scenario. If Lindsey didn't know by 2003 that Mick would say or do absolutely anything to keep his band together and keep momentum going forward, that's not Mick's fault. That's Lindsey's for not knowing Mick better.
Plus, like Mick said going into the project, it seemed like a great idea... very artistically pure. But when the financial realities started hitting, he realized it wasn't the best thing to do for the band as a whole.
No doubt, Mick was playing both sides of the card, too... telling Lindsey what he wanted to hear to get a Mac album started, then telling Stevie what she wanted to hear to make sure the album saw the light of day. I actually have my doubts Mick's flip flopping really surprised Lindsey, either. I suspect Lindsey was simply playing the martyr- something the man has done for the majority of his career.
The whole thing with Lindsey trying to tell Stevie to change her verb tenses was ridiculous, too. The woman once wrote a song with the lyrics: "she stares at the stairs..." :p. Lindsey was obviously just trying to get a rise out of Stevie (possibly as retribution for something she did earlier), and she took the bait. Her Dylan retort was equally as absurd. This whole damned band is absurd... why in the hell would Christine want to throw herself back into the shark tank?!

Yes, I guess Mick is decidedly two-faced. That's why Lindsey was like, "I don't have one ally in this band."

Really?!? Why on earth would anyone expect Stevie to put in as much studio time as Lindsey or Chris?? She never has. This is not a solo record. Even back when FM acted more like a band (The first 3 BN-FM records) She said many times that she simply wasn't needed, and left the studio to write or whatever. She certainly isn't going to sit around and watch Lindsey & Christine work out their respective songs now.
Personally, I can't say whether I really look forward to the next FM "project." But, there is no denying both Stevie and Lindsey are coming off solo high points. I'm anticipate that the three songwriters will contribute 3-4 potentially good, maybe a few great songs. But will they ever satisfy every fan?!? Absolutely not!

Yes, I think Lindsey does things to both Stevie and John. I think Stevie does things to Lindsey. I don't know what John does. But since Cory mentioned that John did retaliate for Lindsey holding their plane up after a concert, I suspect that John does things to Lindsey as well.

I heard a couple of people mention the song Landslide after the Oso, Washington mud disaster. It was appropriate.
Ha, the word "avalanche" might have been just as clunky as "barricade" is. It's funny, because hurricane is not a smoother word than "barricade" and they have the same number of syllables, but "barricade" just doesn't seem right.

If you look at the track listing for IYD on wikepedia, Dave Stewart wrote virtually ALL the music for Stevie's new songs. The only music she is credited is a for older songs she brought in. So knowing this I assume they are in the studio fleshing out the songs, while Dave is writing the music. Seems Stevie has trouble coming up with melody these days. So I am hoping she will bring these demos to Linsdey. Fingers crossed.

very true. I wonder why that is. If you look at the song credits on TISL, Stevie wrote the majority of the songs on that record(music and lyrics). I think only two songs were cowrote with someone else and maybe 4 were written by other people. Yes, some of these were old songs but not all.

I think you are absolutely right. I rewatched Destiny Rules last night, and that's exactly what she did for Say You Will, too. The rest of the band was recording Lindsey's and some of Stevie's older songs, meanwhile Stevie was off recording her own demos outside of Fleetwood Mac to bring some fresh product to the band. Stevie reiterates this multiple times when the documentary is starting. She even insists on playing her own demos to the Warner Bros executives first vs Lindsey's complete Fleetwood Mac tunes.
So it's my strong feeling that Stevie is simply getting some fresh product ready to bring to Fleetwood Mac. That's why Dave said he was working with Stevie on a new Fleetwood Mac project and not album. She may detest recording with Lindsey, but I don't think she'd avoid it, either. Also, another thing watching Destiny Rules again last night taught me: it seems like the big issue with Say You Will wasn't necessarily the recording process being unpleasant. Stevie & Lindsey actually seemed to get along great for the most part. The big, ugly battle was chosing the tracking order. I kind of doubt that'll be an issue this time around, given Christine's presence.

Two things that go against this theory. We know that Stevie is in Nashville with Dave and we also know Dave is working on a "FM project".

I think Glenn Ballard produced that one.

Two things that go against this theory. We know that Stevie is in Nashville with Dave and we also know Dave is working on a "FM project".
I bet Stevie is doing a duet with Dave
Where Does It Say Dave is working on a "FM project".

Dave is definitely working on something big and it is being kept under wraps...
I've been following Dave on twitter since he started tweeting about working with Stevie on what would become "IYD" and he is always tweeting about what he is doing but this past week there has been a total avoidance from Dave with what he is doing not to mention the fact that people that know Stevie ( Michelle Branch) have been at Blackbird and no one is saying anything which leads me to believe this is indeed FM related...Now if it was Stevie's call or solo related I would think she would let Dave tweet like he did with "IYD" I get the feeling the secrecy surrounding what is going on in Nashville is coming from the FM camp...

I honestly think Dave was behind Stevie's superior vocals on IYD, which were a vast improvement upon her work on the TISL and Say You Will albums.
I know you know this, but since Stevie has been working with her voice coach since 1997, her voice has naturally improved over the years.Dave has nothing to do with her technique.

I disagree....Dave made writing/recording fun for Stevie...She was having "The best year of her life" making "IYD" and it shows...
