Dave is definitely working on something big and it is being kept under wraps...

I've been following Dave on twitter since he started tweeting about working with Stevie on what would become "IYD" and he is always tweeting about what he is doing but this past week there has been a total avoidance from Dave with what he is doing not to mention the fact that people that know Stevie ( Michelle Branch) have been at Blackbird and no one is saying anything which leads me to believe this is indeed FM related...Now if it was Stevie's call or solo related I would think she would let Dave tweet like he did with "IYD" I get the feeling the secrecy surrounding what is going on in Nashville is coming from the FM camp...

I agree. I do think that Dave is going to be very much involved in ths MAC project. Mick was very much involved with Stevie and Dave during the making of IYD and Lindsey came in for SA. Lindsey knows what a great experience it was for Stevie and he going to do what he can to make this a "fun" experience. Many songs to me on IYD sounded and could have been great MAC songs. Her voice (IMO) sounded the best it has in years on a record. Dave did a fantastic job on all fronts.

I know you know this, but since Stevie has been working with her voice coach since 1997, her voice has naturally improved over the years.Dave has nothing to do with her technique.

I tend to disagree. I think Stevie's live vocals have continued to deteriorate over the years, but I truly think Dave coaxed some great recorded vocals out of her. I think he challenged her in a positive way, and it shows. Stevie doesn't seem to react well to Lindsey's more confrentational challenges, for instance. Since Stevie's vocal coach has arrived on the scene, Stevie's vocals have tended to be more forced sounding. Look at how softly & beautifully Stevie sings at the beginning of New Orleans, for instance. I fully credit Dave for bringing out such nuances.

Just compare Stevie's vocals on Trouble In Shangri-La to In Your Dreams, too. The TISL vocals sound lazy & unispired in comparison. Maybe that's because Stevie & Sheryl were stoned out of their gourds for the majority of that album, I don't know. But there's more determination & passion behind Stevie's In Your Dreams vocals by a mile.

I think you are absolutely right. I rewatched Destiny Rules last night, and that's exactly what she did for Say You Will, too. The rest of the band was recording Lindsey's and some of Stevie's older songs, meanwhile Stevie was off recording her own demos outside of Fleetwood Mac to bring some fresh product to the band. Stevie reiterates this multiple times when the documentary is starting. She even insists on playing her own demos to the Warner Bros executives first vs Lindsey's complete Fleetwood Mac tunes.

So it's my strong feeling that Stevie is simply getting some fresh product ready to bring to Fleetwood Mac. That's why Dave said he was working with Stevie on a new Fleetwood Mac project and not album. She may detest recording with Lindsey, but I don't think she'd avoid it, either. Also, another thing watching Destiny Rules again last night taught me: it seems like the big issue with Say You Will wasn't necessarily the recording process being unpleasant. Stevie & Lindsey actually seemed to get along great for the most part. The big, ugly battle was choosing the tracking order. I kind of doubt that'll be an issue this time around, given Christine's presence.

Aaaaannndddd,... breathe. You can always count on louie to bring the Sense :)

Curious to know if all these friends of Stevie's are going to be on her finished tracks...can't imagine FM wants Michelle Branch as a guest vocalist on their (final?!?!) album. Whatever. I'll buy it anyway...whenever it actually comes out. Hoping for a more Tusk vibe. Then it won't matter what the hell she leaves Nashville with. Though another solo album along the lines of IYD wouldn't be too bad.

Don't worry Michelle is just visiting...She is still working on her next record and is in Nashville from time to time and she may still have a house there but I'm not sure of that...

Speaking of which I wonder if Reese still has the condo and if so Stevie & company could be staying there after all it would be "Cheaper Than Free"...

Sorry but the "Tusk" days are long gone and I don't think FM will be taking any risks this time like they did with Tusk...

i think they have all the freedom to take all the risks they want these days, nobody really cares about their new album except highly dedicated fans...

but i also think that you are very right and they will not be taking any risks. i think after Tusk and Say You Will Lindsey is sick and tired of getting all the crap for any veering off the safe FM sound, and he'll just take it easy on this band album... and i actually hate it that it seems now with all this prolonging he seems to have been sucked back into being the main producer of the album again. he was clearly planning Froom to do the job.

He was planning on Froom to do the job if it was just him and Stevie and that was to accommodate Stevie. I don't think anyone had to suck him very hard to have him produce FM again. It's just like they "twisted his arm" to do Tango, but it was always inevitable that he would produce that. No question. There's been a lot of outside producer talk since SYW ended, but his first inclination and desire is to produce, in my view. He enjoys the frustration and wants to do it. He only would not do it if he knows that's what it takes to get an album done.

Grunts and whispers. That was going to be Ingmar Berman's last film :distress: .

Your description reminds me of the first time I heard Time Bomb Town and I thought, "Oh, there's my guy. That's his thumb print. He hasn't changed a bit. I've missed this so much."

i think sped up voices is the only thing you wouldn''t have to worry about in that case. grunts and whispers may be unavoidable. :p

I would think that Lindsey will trade vocals on one of Christine's songs, for old time's sake and he'll speed up his own vocal on that, even if he doesn't do anything to hers. My prediction.

You know, whispering on its own is great, but when he substitutes whisper croaking for singing, that's when I can't stand it. I wanted to throw my Elizabethtown soundtrack out of the window.

There's a bit of talk on twitter as to whether Stevie will show up at the Lady Antebellum show in Knoxville on Sunday...Even more interesting is the fact that country music fans know Stevie is in Nashville and are wondering if she will be at the Lady Antebellum show...I guess she made quite an impact at the ACM's...

yup, Stevie should join Lady Antebellum, Lindsey should join NIN, and Stevie and Lindsey fans could all be happy not having to deal with the kind of music they couldn't care about less. :D

as for your Lady A / FM combo suggestion, i'm looking for the throwup emoticon. luckily, we know that particular pairing will never happen.

Christine was in LA when they recently had a minor quake and now she is in Nashville where there may be tornadoes ravaging the surrounding areas. Big storms are predicted for this area starting on Sundae. I hope she won't take this as a bad sign from the Heavens.

Yes they do have those there. They should call Trod Nossel Studios here in town and do some tracks. Its still here and open .The weather is cool and rainy and like UK weather.Poor Stevie and Lindsey probably freeze here.

I can pop in at the studio and say hi since its only about 2 miles from from my house.

ALL be happy?! Unless you LIKE and even LOVE both Stevie solo, Lindsey solo, Stevie and Lindsey together, Stevie w/ Lady A, Lady A solo, Lindsey w/ NIN, NIN solo, and Fleetwood Mac together... #widerpalateoftastesapparently

Besides, Lady A was just a temp. job for her. She knows where she belongs, lol.

“The dream was very short. And the dream was actually very fun. But I just want to clarify that so that when my other half hears this, he doesn’t get all pissed off, because it wasn’t that kind of a dream. We were just having our usual little disagreement, because that’s what we do. And I laughingly said to him, ‘Well, fine. I’ll just go join Lady Antebellum.’ And then the dream ended, and I sat up, and there it was." (SN)

I don't think anyone had to suck him very hard to have him produce FM again.
Michele

This is a delightfully graphic and unexpected image for you to present.

But on any imaginable level it is also so hideous that I must banish it from my mind if I ever hope to be aroused again. The combination of Lindsey's withered flanks and the smoke wrinkled and dry mouths of any FM members in combination is enough to make even James Franco or Sasha Grey swear off sexual activity for life. Or, you know, pick your favorite movie and porn stars to plug into that sentence. Same difference. It is a boner killer of epic magnitude.

On another note, all this FM drama is so TIRESOME. It doesn't matter if it is the Nashville "mystery" or the "who is producing" mystery or the "do Stevie and Lindsey get along" mythology. It is all manufactured by the band. And it all plays into the original Rumours drama that they all believe fuels the enduring interest in the group. It was all fascinating when People magazine covered it in the 70's and the sexual revolution was going on. That was when people were smoking "lids" and everyone was passed out in bean bags listening to music on headphones and puka shells were sexy. It was a stinky, dreamy, idyllic romantic pre-AIDS world with a Woodstock hangover.

Which is pretty much what the band has been trading on, media wise, ever since. And don't think for one minute that all their interviews aren't for the most part canned. Publicists tell those interviewers what they can and cannot ask. The only one who is ever somewhat candid is Stevie, and as nuts as we all know she is, she tells the same stories over and over and over and over and over. Why do you think everyone craps their drawers when she mentions a detail about a car with a broken transmission?

I find it sad that this band has been caught up in their own personal drama for so long that they haven't managed to make any decent music since 1982. They have a glimmer here and there, but as I look back, it is a sad state of affairs. They are such an immature pile of sods. The pile mostly consisting of Lindsey and Stevie.

As a mature functioning adult, I cannot romanticize their crap. All they talk about is each other in the press. It is hard to separate the publicistspeak from the codependent childish masturbatory fetishism of their own conflicts. Do people really care anymore? It has been almost 40 YEARS. It isn't romantic, folks. It is pathetic. Does anyone reading this still obsess over and talk and write about a relationship that is even over 5 years dead? 10 years? Beyond that? Really? Exactly how humiliated does that make you feel?

I think about my own job and life, and frankly, I don't like drama. I don't encourage it in my world anymore. It was fun until 30. But now I cut it out like a tumor. That is a sign of maturity and adulthood. And regardless of the reality of their lives, those two talk about their drama and conflict non stop. The conceit being that the conflict creates "great art." Yeah, maybe if you are living with it. Sleeping with it. But not if you are making love to your own grief for over 3 decades. Then it is just a little sad and a whole lot gruesome. Grow the hell up already. I think that is one reason most of their songs have no real gravity anymore and no marked resonance with the public. It is just incest and scrapbook navel gazing. Why do you think Stevie keeps raiding the "vault"?

Around 1983 I thought it was kind of cute that those two were still obsessing about their "great romance" and writing songs about each other. About 1997 I found it quite curious. 17 years later I find it morbid.

So with the drama, faked or not, still going on with those two, I don't care a bit about a new album. I wish Lindsey would write a good song about his wife. Or his aging. Or about the real reason he hates Stevie - that she became the huge star and focal point of the band he worked so hard on. Funny how that never comes up in the interviews. It is the most obvious thing in the world. She is the icon. She is the one everyone writes about. She will be the most remembered. Not him. How about writing or talking about that difficult truth? That could be great art.

On the flip side, how about Stevie do the same? Face that core conflict and write about it? There isn't much truth with those two. Just smoke and mirrors. At 48 I can't stand having people in my own daily life who can't face and talk about the truth head on. So I certainly can't cotton to it in pop stars. I expect more.

Maybe Christine will bring some balance to the staged shi*tshow. I am not holding my breath. Sorry to say it, but the whole Mac thing has really run out of steam for me. Same old ad copy that was used in a Rolling Stone random notes mention in the early 80's. I wish these people would say something new. Do something new. Write about something new.

But kudos to Michele for that astonishingly heinous sexual image.

She absolutely did! :D

The reporter/editor made a few helpful additions to the text so we wouldn't get 'confused' so I just grabbed out what she ACTUALLY said. THIS is what the original article said. Tres amusing... ;)

And this particular coupling was Nicks’ own idea, coming out of a dream she had where she was cheating on Lindsey Buckingham, musically speaking. “The dream was very short,” Nicks says. “And the dream was actually very fun. But I just want to clarify that so that when my other half hears this” (by “other half,” she means her professional partner Buckingham), “he doesn’t get all pissed off, because it wasn’t that kind of a dream. We were just having our usual little disagreement [in the dream], because that’s what we do. And I laughingly said to him, ‘Well, fine. I’ll just go join Lady Antebellum.’ And then the dream ended, and I sat up, and there it was.”

Maybe it's just partially because I'm female and younger than you.. but I think this element is the most romantic thing EVER. True love never dies! Keep on making those artistic statements, Lindsey.. and keep writing about what's in your heart, both. As an artist, not doing that would be the manufactured and fake thing.

see i used to wonder about exactly what you worded here when i first got sucked into (man you just killed using this word for me! :xoxo:) LB's music. also, why not write age-appropriate songs, instead of being stuck in teenage years all your life. i think he moved somewhat into that territory with his later work though, and it's refreshing when it pops up.

he likes to think of himself as some kind of noble martyr, and exposing this ugly naked raw human truth the way you so bluntly put it would certainly not fit the bill. doesn't it sound much better and more romantic if he instead projects that he selflessly loved the woman who dumped and used him while he did everything for her? ;) instead of saying i'm a bitter angry and jealous man because i did everything while she collected all the fruits of that labor and i cannot get out of that rut? although he does say that somewhat less bluntly in some of his songs - both early angry ones and later more contemplative ones... of course the way he says it (especially in the more recent songs), it can be interpreted either way, which you can say is the way to write poetry anyway - so everybody can interpret it the way it fits their views and needs. that's where you have this never-ending discussions between someone who sees glimpses of that career dissatisfaction sprinkled in many many songs of his, while romantics will see just eternal love and longing for one woman in those same lyrics. Not Too Late gets pretty clear about how he felt about his career.

for me, Cast Away Dreams is very much so too, about being on the crossroads of letting all that ambition finally go (and for eternal love romantics it's just another song about SN).

at some point he must have finally decided that all that anger and bitterness and jealousy and dissatisfaction is not healthy (to put it mildly!), and he slowly got over all that, with lots of therapy, yoga, meditation, who knows what. and that's why now you have It Takes Time and lyrics like, maybe i wasted all this time trying to prove what's yours and what's mine (ie i forever tried to get the credit for all the work i've done for you)... but really, i did do all that work for you (whether to prove how good i am, or just because i could "raise to be my better self"). of course, romantics will take these "all for you" lyrics as the ultimate proof that eternal love exists and this man is that rare breed of selflessly forever loving one-woman man.

Sad Angel and Miss Fantasy lyrics are pretty blunt and clear too - basically saying - you are the star of the show, hey come on over and join us, get over any disagreements, lets make more money  (crowd calling out for more, on with the show).

Yes, as Stevie said, he'll hang himself up on a cross to make a point, lol. I mean, OF COURSE he'll emphasise the ways in which he's cared for her and tried to do the right thing for her even thought he'd been dumped. And she'll emphasise the ways she cared for him. It's a natural instinct. I also think some of the bitterness/anger people talk about that they think Lindsey went through comes from a slightly different source - I think that some of it is more resentment at that fame pulling her away from him, rather than fame coming to her in a more general way MORE than him. *shrugs*

although he does say that somewhat less bluntly in some of his songs - both early angry ones and later more contemplative ones... of course the way he says it (especially in the more recent songs), it can be interpreted either way, which you can say is the way to write poetry anyway - so everybody can interpret it the way it fits their views and needs. that's where you have this never-ending discussions between someone who sees glimpses of that career dissatisfaction sprinkled in many many songs of his, while romantics will see just eternal love and longing for one woman in those same lyrics. Not Too Late gets pretty clear about how he felt about his career.

Ah, yes. Or one can see some kind of dissatisfaction with a career, songs with a tinge of politics, talk of learning to prioritise as well as eternal love and longing for one woman. Often his songs combine more than one thing, I would say. Even something like Peacekeeper which is fairly overtly political in many ways has relational elements to it and he's talked about writing that one in terms of considering the impact of things on a married couple. Yes, Not Too Late DOES say that. And then things like Show You How combine elements of the career and relationship and show the impact one has on the other. And I LOVE that.

for me, Cast Away Dreams is very much so too, about being on the crossroads of letting all that ambition finally go (and for eternal love romantics it's just another song about SN).

So, when he talks about CAD dealing with "wanting to prioritize properly and, in order to do that, they’re feeling like they pretty much have to give up on their muse" and then you read lyrics about his faith being gone, and addressing a 'magic one', and plans changing, and HEARTS BREAKING because of choices they have to make, what on earth do you imagine he's talking about? When he tells that person to sleep and dream of him, what the hell does that have to do with being on the crossroads of letting that 'ambition' go?Does it really not strike you as rather more 'personal' than 'professional', what he's giving up!? Also, 'eternal love romantics' are perfectly capable of also reading things like career discussion and politics and general philosophies of life into his lyrics, just so you're aware. Just as I would never say all Stevie's songs are about Lindsey, so I'd never say all his songs are about her.

at some point he must have finally decided that all that anger and bitterness and jealousy and dissatisfaction is not healthy (to put it mildly!), and he slowly got over all that, with lots of therapy, yoga, meditation, who knows what. and that's why now you have It Takes Time and lyrics like, maybe i wasted all this time trying to prove what's yours and what's mine (ie i forever tried to get the credit for all the work i've done for you)... but really, i did do all that work for you (whether to prove how good i am, or just because i could "raise to be my better self"). of course, romantics will take these "all for you" lyrics as the ultimate proof that eternal love exists and this man is that rare breed of selflessly forever loving one-woman man.

By the way, I suggest if you want to analyse Lindsey's lyrics that you have them down correctly first or said analysis is a little more difficult...

"Maybe I’ve just wasted all this precious time / I tried to prove what is and isn’t mine
Wondering to myself / If you knew it was all for you"

Yes, that part of the song can very easily be read in the way you suggest but I don't really think it fits either with the reality of how he's talked about things before (he's talked about 'proving' things to each OTHER in a more personal context than this), or with the rest of the song's lyrical content. The 'all for you' COULD be professional but I really do think it's more personal, to be honest, and I know you'll think that's just because I'm wearing my usual BN 'shipping' hat. That's fine. This is all just my opinion, naturally.

Can I ask how you would explain THESE lyrics from ITT then? I'd be interested in your POV, tbh, considering how you view the rest of the song. It has overlapping lyrical content with both Show You How and In Our Own Time and seems VERY personal. Who is being addressed?

"Slow down, baby
Cross that line
If you want to save me
It takes time"

And I don't view this song as any kind of ultimate proof. I DO think that that kind of love exists though, even if it morphs throughout a lifetime. And I do think he has been selfless on many occasions when it comes to Stevie - because he loved, and ultimately, loves her. I don't mind saying that.

Sad Angel and Miss Fantasy lyrics are pretty blunt and clear too - basically saying - you are the star of the show, hey come on over and join us, get over any disagreements, lets make more money (crowd calling out for more, on with the show).

REALLY!? You're correct that elements exist in both those songs of a 'professional - c'mon, people want to see you/us onstage! let's go!' angle but there's more. He talked about Sad Angel being written because of Stevie always having to fight, about the difficulty she's had. It's compassionate not just a 'I want $$$ so come record and play live with me!!!'. I mean, Miss Fantasy even starts out on a personal note - he's having ANOTHER dream of her, and he's grieving for Stevie because (we assume it's because of this) she's grieving the loss of her mother. That's not professional. I find his repetition of the 'I remember you' so darling, really, only because of the HUGE emphasis Stevie put on the content of the talk she had with him. She wanted to remind him, to make sure HE remembered how cute they were, how compassionate, how loving, how funny, etc.

How would you explain THESE lyrics in terms of the song being a professional calling card to convince her to come out and play with FM?

"Do you still tremble when I fall?
Will you still answer when I call?
Would you still love to linger up against a wall?"

"You’re the queen of the underground
Never leaving a clue"

And that line above - that doesn't make you think at all? About something other than professionalism? It gives callbacks to other songs, more personal ones like Under The Skin and Love Runs Deeper. And that's the kind of thing that interests me, and I know others too. It's all part of this dialogue which is ongoing. And no, not every song is about Stevie. And not every song is about Lindsey. But she still leaves a personal mark on MANY of his songs, whether they deal with his career, his life, or his dreams. And I love that. With no shame.

see, right there, you lost me. ;)

sorry, you wrote a really nice post but i have to respond to your questions, many of which i feel have been regurgitated over and over, by:
all this FM drama is so TIRESOME.
although i feel that way, i do understand that this drama makes many happy and interested, and i guess that's great, we all get something out of this band, their music, and/or various members.

do i think it's a good thing for LB to advertise himself as a part of the drama couple instead of by the power of his music? no. i'm annoyed by it (and don't have any trouble expressing it to anybody who would listen ). but apparently he's fine with it.

As a mature functioning adult, I cannot romanticize their crap.

I think you can do it if you still think of "real love" like a high school student does, rather than an adult who has actually experienced it.

I think that many of Lindsey's lyrics do deal with middle-aged matters and are not so much about lost love as they are about missed opportunities, the legacy you're leaving behind, the approach of death. I don't think Bel Air Rain, Not Too Late, Flying Down Juniper, One Take, Under the Skin or "End of Time" are the creations of the young man who wrote GYOW, much less Trouble.

Also, I think many of his songs are about more than one thing, not as metaphors about love, but because love is comprised of so much more than just romance or physical yearning at this point. It's about mortality, family, politics, career. The mix and priority of those things jumbled together. No one item or emotion exists in isolation from the other. It does when you're young and have less to concentrate on and it does when you're older and have less activity going on, because life is less diverse. But at its height, when you're pulled in so many different directions at once, I think the feelings you express in word or song usually reflects some or all of them. That's how I take most of Lindsey's lyrics these days.

Why do you think everyone craps their drawers when she mentions a detail about a car with a broken transmission?

I haven't soiled my pants, but if Stevie wants to talk more about the Toyota that would not go in reverse and the complications it caused them when parking (well, I'd think it would interfere with driving in general), then I'm still all ears.

humm, I'm not sure what's up with me then- I've had a boyfriend since I was 15.. until I got married at 31- many relationships. I've only been truly in love once. And because I've experienced it, I think that is the reason I know it (like millions of others, apparently) when I see it.

If Stevie's bringing songs back to L.A. I will hope that My Heart is maybe in there. It popped up in my iTunes the other day and, to me, it would work as a FM track for a new album. Then again, I'm the person crazy enough to want The Dealer on a FM album too. I just think My Heart fits her habit of putting almost only relationship songs on band albums. Hope that Mick spits out some details on the new album!

"My Heart" was a bonus track for "IYD" so I can't see her re-recording it for FM less than 4 years later and I don't think it would be anywhere near as good without the Mike Campbell 12 string guitar parts...

So because millions eat that stuff up it legitimizes their view that it's "real love"? They do the same stuff at every show. It's a performance. You can't seriously take what they do on stage as a genuine show of emotion when it's replicated night in and night out. Lindsey is happily married. I have no reason to believe his marriage is not "real love".

And Lindsey has referred to it as such. In one interview-- I *think* it was one he did during the time when he was working with Mick and John on a bunch of his stuff-- he was asked about his kids and what they thought of the FM shows and his interaction with Stevie onstage and he said they were fine with it because they "saw how rehearsed it was" or something along those lines. That they "knew it was a performance" or some such. I'm roughly paraphrasing but it was not the first time he's referred to it this way. Stevie may think they're pulling the wool over everyone's eyes but Lindsey only plays along so much. (Maybe someone else can point to the article, I don't have time right now to dig around and find it:shrug:).

I also believe he's happily married. Can I point out, however, that this idea that they do the same stuff at every show, that it's all a performance, that it's not a genuine show of emotion is slightly ridiculous? Certainly, as someone else mentioned, 'laying on the tears' is a bit much!? People think they're acting CRYING now? You thought their emotions in San Jose and Las Vegas were faked? I'm sorry but they are NOT good actors.

Yes, they often have planned out a fundamental interaction - holding hands as they enter for an encore, hugging at the end of Sara, 'fighting'/'dancing' during Tusk, etc. However, not a single one of these planned, rehearsed interactions stays the same throughout even one tour. It's not like they're checking their watches going 'okay, so we have to hug for exactly 2.5 seconds, then I'll smile at her' or 'let me close my eyes and burrow into her neck after sniffing her hair for three seconds' - that'll fool those gullible shippers into thinking we have more than a purely platonic business relationship these days. There is a LOT of variation in, say, the Sara hug - they didn't even start out hugging on this tour for quite some time. In 2009 it began with a hug on her part and he ended up putting both arms around her by the end. I managed to create a 12 minute video JUST of different Sara embraces, for goodness' sake. These things evolve. And yes, OF COURSE, it's for the audience. And I think also for themselves. As Stevie said last year, the audience loves it when he touches her, and so does SHE.

Just because a planned general action is incorporated into a live show also doesn't negate the possibility of ACTUAL emotion behind it, either, btw. Saying the same thing over and over again doesn't make it LESS true, for example. Or MORE true, as the case may be. Maybe I am blind but I don't think so. When I look at hundreds of videos from last tour (and I have - combing through them for my favourite SnL moments), and when I look at over 500 pictures of them from last tour, I don't see overly rehearsed, tired unemotional interaction. There's variation in every Landslide and Sara interaction, every WY introduction is different, they didn't always do a full hug after Say Goodbye, etc. And I don't think they're good enough actors to pull off the way they look at each other, sorry, though of course 'looks' are widely subjective and open to interpretation and that's cool.

And I don't think anyone is saying that seeing one pre-planned Sara hug makes them believe SnL are still in love - it's a cumulative effect, combined with the way they still talk about each other and the songs they write, most often. Neither Stevie NOR Lindsey are trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes on this particular matter. Lindsey's talked about it being rehearsed, Stevie's talked about it being faked (though apparently not so much on the last tour, amusingly enough, considering it was WAY more interactive and affectionate than Unleashed overall, I would say). For crying out loud, THIS was a report from a big article written on Stevie which she praised to high heaven:

At rehearsal, Nicks and Buckingham’s banter lit up with hard-won playfulness as they tried to work out their positioning on the stage. After “Landslide”—which Stevie wrote about Lindsey, just before joining Fleetwood Mac, as she contemplated leaving music behind entirely when their duo, Buckingham Nicks, was dropped from its label—Lindsey remarked: “I feel weird standing behind her. I don’t want to stand too close.” Stevie fired back, teasingly: “I don’t know. I have stood next to you playing guitar for how many years?”

To perform “Gypsy,” Nicks suggested, “I’m just going to basically stand sideways because I know you can’t turn.”

Buckingham: You’re stalking me.

Nicks: I’m stalking you on this one.

Buckingham: All I can do is angle toward you. I gotta look at the neck.

Nicks: Just remember to look over at me every once in a while so I don’t look like an idiot.

Buckingham: I just need to eye the neck of the guitar and then look over at your neck. Go from neck to neck.

Nicks: My wrinkly neck.

Buckingham: Oh, stop it.

OF COURSE some things are planned and choreographed - it's a SHOW. But it doesn't make the emotion between them 'fake' and I don't think they're trying to 'fool' us apparently gullible idiots who still 'ship' them. Lindsey was clear enough on the matter of roleplaying versus reality in interviews last year, after all. And once again, I'll just say - they're TERRIBLE ACTORS.

If you don't mind me asking, but what do you mean by 'ship'? Like do you ship LB and SN romantically? I'm just super curious by that. I see people do that with television show characters, but with real, living people who run their own lives? How does that work and why?

I mean, I always wanted Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson to make amends (not that I was really emotionally invested in it). And it didn't quite happen the way I hoped it would, but it wasn't really about any personal desire of mine so much as hoping that they'd find some sort of peace, just as two humans with a meaningful history together. Which is a bit similar to my feelings with LB, SN and co., but I don't know if this LB/SN shipping business is quite the same thing...

It's a term I'm not particularly fond of using myself when it comes to SnL but others use it with abandon so... Basically, when it comes to SnL, as with everything else, so-called 'shippers' aren't one big homogenous group. It seems to generally refer in this case to people who are invested in the idea of their personal relationship (beyond just friendship) and particularly those who still have a desire to examine and understand what the hell that's all about. It doesn't necessarily mean a person who screams when they see SnL hold hands, or a person who reads eternal love for the other in every one of their songs. It doesn't mean a person who insults Lindsey's wife and weeps at the overwrought tragic circumstances that apparently keep SnL apart.

Sometimes I think it's used dismissively towards fans of the SnL relationship (which is how *I* like to phrase it), to gently mock or chide for perceived gullibility. From what I can tell, it's used most of the time for people who are interested in their past relationship, see something more than a friendship/professional r'ship (usually romantic, but not always) between SnL, and/or who want there to be that now or at some point in the future.

I think shipping is slightly different to what you're describing (which is how I generally felt about Lennon/McCartney but with MUCH more emotional investment, lol) but it does incorporate what you're talking about. And apologies because I probably just explained that in a way which made it even more complicated than is helpful or it needed to be, lol.

For me, I use the word 'shipping' because others do, and it's something of a linguistic shortcut that I can employ without using awkward statements like 'I am intrigued by the idea that there is more than friendship between SnL, and have a strange desire that they rekindle some kind of emotional and/or romantic involvement at some point in the future. Oh, and I see what I believe is evidence of that 'more than' currently.' ;)

The term shippers derived from the X-Files television show and it was used when discussing the Mulder and Scully relationship (MSR) on internet forums.

Here's a simple question or maybe not so much simple.... and possibly 2 questions...

What do you all think would have happened if Stevie Nicks had left FM in 1998 instead of Christine McVie? Would the "perfect" version of FM have been as successful or even still relevant ?

And....

So hypothetically... if Stevie went country and solo.... what do you think would happen to FM ticket sales...... ?

And a bonus 3rd question....

Which EP / LP / CD would get the biggest pop? A Stevie-less FM or Stevie Rocks Country ?

Just seriously curious.....

The answer to all your questions is simple...From a visibility and promotional standpoint if Stevie leaves they will loose a large chunk of their fan base...Casual fans may have not have noticed that Christine was gone but rest assured people will notice Stevie's absence...From an artistic point Stevie being gone will probably have little impact on Lindsey & Christine's songs with the real question being will people buy a FM record with out Stevie on it...I don't think Stevie will go all out "Country" although there may be a few countryish songs which would be nothing new for her...

So far, 13 people have voted to wait for Stevie. Of those on that list that I recognize to be mainly Stevie fans, have any of them ever posted on here that they couldn't care less about Fleetwood Mac?

There are a lot of people who are mainly fans of one member or another, yet still enjoy when the band makes music together. You should be well aware of that, Elle!

As for your last sentence... that just sounds like fan-baiting. ;)

no, i am really curious.

yes, many people are fans of the band first, or all the members. i understand their reasoning, and most of them have expressed it. i would expect Gerald, for example, to say he wants all 5 because he's been consistently saying that (he hasn't voted yet).

you expressed your reasoning, too, although i still don't get why wouldn't you want 3 albums instead of 2.

but some people that voted there are SN-only fans, and they don't have a problem saying that, the same as i don't have a problem saying i'm really a LB fan, whether with the band or solo. so, if you tell me you have no interest in FM album without SN, why do you care whether it's out or not?

Nothing wrong with being curious as to the reasoning behind someone's vote, for or against. The implication that Stevie fans are voting a certain way out of fear, however, is the part that sounds like fan-baiting.

Would you be worried that a Lindsey-free album would prove Fleetwood Mac to be viable without him?

Let me ask you this -- if Fleetwood Mac had to choose between releasing an album without Lindsey, or waiting just a few months for him to be available, would you prefer they wait or proceed without him? Keep in mind that you'd be then getting two albums with new Lindsey songs, as opposed to just one.

Speaking for myself, I'm always going to opt for a chance at more new songs. And to have new solo material AND new Mac material is the absolute best scenario of all, for me.

why would i be worried, most of his stuff is not commercially viable.

plus, most SN fans disliked 2 last albums/outputs from FM that were with him and SN, anyway.

i thought i've been pretty clear on that - of course they should put out whatever they have! more output the better! i've been highly frustrated with FM measly output. if LB didn't contribute anything and other songwriters did and have it mostly recorded, why would they wait for him? i would not be getting 2 albums with new LB songs if he didn't contribute any to FM album, so his songs on FM album would be a pure wishful thinking. and i would be extremely happy to get LB solo album, with or without his contributions anywhere else!

You know ... Think about it...... FM remained successful without Lindsey... They have remained successful for the last 16 years without Christine.... FM's biggest failure was the album and tour for Time.... which had Mick, John AND,,,, Christine on it,,,, BUT no Stevie.......

When I suggested a Stevie country LP, I was only re-voicing something that has been mentioned in the past,,,, She has always done things with a country flair and now with Lady A, CMT Crossroads and the ACM Awards, there is alot of focus in that genre for her. AND I remember reading about the prospects for her working with Lady A after last year's tour had been mentioned... and before this FM additional tour...

No matter what happens..... just remember,,,,, the Fleetwood Mac of old will never be again.... To try to go back and try to re-create it seems to me to be impossible... and rather sad....

Of course......there is always the argument ......... what is FM without alot of hyped drama????

exactly!

and what can be more drama than 4/5 of the band releasing an album while 1/5 releases her own because they seemingly can't work together in the studio?? they don't even have to hype anything, it's hyping itself! they can do press junkets all 5 together, talk how it's still a lovefest, and everybody will be looking for little signs of disagreement. it would be great!

why would i be worried, most of his stuff is not commercially viable.

Then why should Stevie fans be concerned either?

The Fleetwood Mac name is almost always going to bring in more consumers than any of the solo members individually (I say "almost always," because 'Time' didn't do 'Street Angel's' numbers -- of course 'Time' only featured one of the classic songwriters, rather than two). I think pretty much everyone concedes that a new Fleetwood Mac album, with or without Stevie, is going to be more commercially successful than a Stevie Nicks solo album.

I highly doubt Nicks fans are going to be devastated if the band chooses to move forward without her. Especially if, as you say, those fans couldn't care less about Fleetwood Mac and only want more Stevie solo. To follow through with that logic, a successful, Nicks-less Fleetwood Mac means more time for Stevie to record and tour without being tied down to the band.

plus, most SN fans disliked 2 last albums/outputs from FM that were with him and SN, anyway.

I wouldn't say that "most" Stevie fans disliked 'Say You Will' and 'EP.' Many disliked them, certainly. But many (including myself) loved them, too.

I've heard quite a number of Lindsey diehards criticize both releases for various reasons, as well, yet I wouldn't surmise from that criticism that most of his fans disliked them.

i thought i've been pretty clear on that - of course they should put out whatever they have! more output the better! i've been highly frustrated with FM measly output. if LB didn't contribute anything and other songwriters did and have it mostly recorded, why would they wait for him? i would not be getting 2 albums with new LB songs if he didn't contribute any to FM album, so his songs on FM album would be a pure wishful thinking. and i would be extremely happy to get LB solo album, with or without his contributions anywhere else!

That's not what I asked, though. I asked if you would choose to wait if having a new album with his contributions was only a matter of the band holding off for a few more months.

To have all five on an album, I'm very willing to wait. And I still believe that's exactly what we're going to get... after the tour, just as Christine said.

No matter what happens..... just remember,,,,, the Fleetwood Mac of old will never be again.... To try to go back and try to re-create it seems to me to be impossible... and rather sad..

Well I think that's about as accurate as it gets...

Yes "Rumours" is something to be proud of but it's also hurt the band as much as it's helped them...FM tried doing something different with "TUSK" but when it was not an instant success they ran right back to the security of what has become known as the "Classic Rumours Sound" and they have never strayed far from it...Personally I have grown weary of the whole Rumours thing and I have little interest in a new Mac album since it is almost guaranteed to be especially with CM's return a "Classic Rumours Sound" re-hash...

I think pretty much everyone concedes that a new Fleetwood Mac album, with or without Stevie, is going to be more commercially successful than a Stevie Nicks solo album.

i've looked through the rest of your post and you seem to be going in circles so i'm not really sure what you are asking, but i'll try to clarify the parts that i think you are still asking me about:

yes, i think FM should release, without any wait, whatever album they have done, even if they have only 2 out of 3 songwriters on it. and i don't care who is the 3rd songwriter that is out - whether it's LB, CM, or SN.

regarding commercial viability, that concern/question is relevant for SN output since that's what everybody keeps bringing up - that she's by far the most commercially viable solo of the 5 of them, and that FM would not be commercially viable without her.

for LB, the equivalent would be if you ask whether or not the album without him would still be as critically acclaimed as the ones with his involvement are. commercial viability was never his strength.

I could not care less if FM recorded without Lindsey. I have BTM and I have Time. I like BTM. I don't particularly like Time, but I don't think either album should not have been recorded. The band indicates that they would have done another album and tour between 1982-1987 if Lindsey had been ready. I think they should have gone ahead with it and either them going ahead would have made Lindsey return earlier OR it would have made his return for Tango all the sweeter.

At this point, they have been waiting for another FM album since the SYW tour ended. They could do an album without Stevie now and do one with her in 2016. Then, we'd get two albums instead of one. And, frankly, the contrast would be interesting to me. But holding off more when they've already held off so long already does not seem wise to me. Hoping for something that may never happen is kind of a risk for 65 and 70 year old people.

You know ... Think about it...... FM remained successful without Lindsey... They have remained successful for the last 16 years without Christine.... FM's biggest failure was the album and tour for Time.... which had Mick, John AND,,,, Christine on it,,,, BUT no Stevie.......

Yes, but Time was also missing Lindsey. I think the failure of time was because it lacked BOTH Lindsey and Stevie than because of just Stevie. They probably could've faired decently with Lindsey. You say they "remained successful" without Lindsey. I guess that's because their success didn't drop below a certain level which you deem unsuccessful. And fair enough....but let's not pretend there wasn't an enormous drop off.

I think I expressed myself and my question pretty clearly.

My feeling is that Fleetwood Mac is operating with more than just a mere "hope" that Stevie will be a part of this album. Hence their decision to wait for her. What I wanted to know was if you'd want them to wait for Lindsey if his contribution was guaranteed, but would delay the album slightly. Things got muddied when you said the band should not wait for him if he didn't contribute anything, and that you wouldn't get two new albums of songs from him if he didn't.

That's cool. I can understand and respect that. Prior to Christine re-joining, I wouldn't have minded if Fleetwood Mac decided to record without Stevie, or without Lindsey. But now that Chris is back, I want all five on an album.

The prospect of having "The Five" on an album, is too desirable for me to want anything less.

OK, I have no idea where to post this. There are threads in two forums, some threads are being merged, etc. but here it is:

Wasn't there a tweet from Dave that he is working on a Fleetwood Mac project? Now according to Mick, it's a Stevie solo album? And it's really odd to me that Christine is in Nashville if it's not for Fleetwood Mac. I would almost guarantee her own songs aren't finished, and I'm sure she has things to add to Lindsey's songs. I can't believe she would go to Nashville for an unrelated purpose, especially since she has never once been involved in a Stevie solo album before. Why would her first time be right after re-joining the band she retired from 16 years ago?

But talking about the long break between Mirage and Tango, I wanted something from them and didn't like going 5 years without as a fan, but mortality wasn't an issue for me back then. It was only AFTER the fact, once Christine left the band in 1997 that I started seeing what a waste that 5year void had been in the past and longing that we'd had an album in the interim. I regretted that there were so few studio albums from them so much more after the fact , when history was ending, than I did at the time the inactivity was actually happening. I only realized how important losing those years was in retrospect.

I don't want those same regrets 10 years from now.

Of course I wouldn't turn down a Mac album with just four of the five, but that idea doesn't excite me nearly as much as the prospect of all five. I've wanted a new album with The Five for over a decade now. Another album with just four of the five would feel like settling.

Basically, we're all wishin' & hopin' & thinkin' & prayin' in these conversations. I'm not telling you or Elle or anyone that they're wrong for wanting new music from four them. Mick just said they're hoping she'll be done in a couple of weeks. If the band hasn't decided to wait for her, why would they care how long her solo project takes?

So this is the math I did: Stevie recording in Nashville + Mick hoping she'll be done in two weeks = Fleetwood Mac has decided to wait for Stevie.

i should have known that you would be mixing time and space, absolute vs relative values in your math. :p you need to study up.

what Mick said can easily mean they will wait for 2 weeks, and see what happens then; we have no doubt they are hoping and would love to have all 5 on the record. Mick doesn't say what will happen if their hope turns out to be false. they may re-group and take another direction.

I hear what you're saying. I still can't imagine Stevie giving them the run-around at this point in the game, or them still allowing her to do so. I think if she were putting them off indefinitely, without giving them any guarantees on her participation, that they'd say, "take all the time you'd like on your solo album, Stevie -- we won't be needing your services now." Basically, "take a hike."

and direction they should take is: if she's not back in promised time, then release that album already, with or without SN!!

I'll agree with you there. If she still hasn't committed to recording with them, or if she has committed and yet still doesn't make herself available to them when they expect her to, then, yes, they should proceed without her.

I'm just curious: has anyone considered the possibility that Stevie could just send her contributions into FM digitally instead of needing to be physically present? She's working at Martina McBride's studio where she has access to some of the top musicians in the country. Wouldn't it be likely that she's working on both her solo project and the 3-4 songs for the new FM project simultaneously?

I've been a fan of both Fleetwood Mac and Stevie for many years. She has always said how important FM is to her and that her solo career is separate; has been successful at juggling both careers since "Bella Donna" was first released; and I believe that she will be ready to contribute to the FM album when they need her. With the technology that exists today, there isn't a need for everyone to be physically in the studio. They can work together through Skype, iChat, etc. and send their work back & forth. Dave Stewart and Stevie wrote songs together for IYD using that format; they are probably working the same way with FM. Have some faith in their process!!

yes, and the question in the poll was should they wait for Stevie, however long that may take. based on what you say above, your vote should be different from what you cast.

the question in my poll was pretty clear, and the options i provided were written as they were for a reason.

when people vote no, and tell me, but not "however long it takes", or tell me "it won't sell without SN" or my favorite so far since it's so far off the mark - "she's making FM relevant" therefore they should under no circumstances put an album out without her, they negate their vote right there.

and there's your "commercial viability" argument raised by a number of SN fans again. you were asking me why is that relevant to SN fans. i don't know why it is, but they certainly keep bringing it up.

according to these fans none of the struggling new bands should ever record and release an album since they are no "commercially viable" so why bother? warped logic. everybody should forget about BN album too, since it was not commercially viable, it tanked if the oft-repeated story is correct.

I can't even really understand what you mean. Are you saying that they should record the album during sound checks or something? They really don't have any free time to coalesce during the tour.

It's not like the old days when they were all hanging out in that one big dressing room, while on tour, endlessly communing. I don't think they can actually create together on the road -- although they could do so during a break after the first leg.

However, I agree with you that if they have some songs sketched out already, have a basic vocal arrangement and melody for them, that they could actually play them in concert, like in the old days when they did songs live before they were recorded. But we would need a rough draft of those songs to already exist. If they do, perform them in concert first and then release it on a live CD if the band never gets around to formally recording it.
