In my opinion, she has earned her right to call herself an artist. She has done a lot of work. If you've ever done an album, it's a lot of work. (Especially as a composer)

I'll say it again : At her age and with what she has accomplished (like it or not). She can do whatever the hell she wants. She's Stevie Nicks.

THIS.

I think this has a ring of truth. And for my money's worth, it is utterly and completely true.

That's my Stevie Nicks impression ladies and gentlemen. You saw it here first. I'm taking it to NOTS.

Fleetwood Mac recording was never about "Who wants to be here?" It was always about "Just show up and then grouse to the press."
 Yes, it's probaby naive to expect Fleetwood Mac to behave differently than what they are.

Well, I've kind of accepted that a lot of my favorite artists who have been making music for 30 or 40 years peaked long ago, so I suppose I'm not that anxious about new Mac material or solo material. It'll be nice if it happens, but if it's only an EP I'm actually fine with that too as long as the music is good. They can always put it on an album later.

About SYW, I thought it sounded too modern and slick, but not so much that I totally disliked it, I was actually surprised at how much I did like it. It's still my 5th favorite out of the 6 B&N lineup albums though. I want to take a chainsaw to it and trim it down much more badly than with Tusk, there's 10 songs on there that would make a less dilutedly respectable offering. But I bet I'd pick a different 10 than other people, so there's always that whole thing about subjective taste.

If lightning never strikes again, for me it's not the end of the world. If they're still enjoying making music then that's a win (even more so if I like the music they're making), and maybe for Stevie it's with other people and maybe for the men of Mac it's with each other. I love the album format and I do wish it was embraced as an art form again, but the music won't necessarily end without it.

Stevie & FM are rare in their attitude towards albums. They are in fact, one of the only artists I've heard using low sales as an excuse to not make albums. It just shows that's it's an excuse and not a reason.

You're right- it's sort of a result of attaining meteoric success so early in their career. It spoiled them immensely (SN & LB). They lived the high life relatively soon after joining the band.

As much as a spoiled brat Lindsey is too, I've never heard him say something against recording new material with FM, and not at all about low sales as an argument not to record. He LOVES to record.

My opinion is that even though Lindsey drives her nuts, he is able to build miracles out of her material that other producers do not - he draws out strong vocal performances and capitalizes on the hooks and atmosphere of her poetry and melodies in ways others have not.

While I'm hugely enamored with most all of Stevie's FM songs, I'm of the mind that Lindsey hasn't done anything that special with her songs -- on a consistent basis -- since 'Rumours.' We have brilliant pieces like "Sara" and "Gypsy," but then we also have unimaginative production on songs like "Angel," "Straight Back," "That's Alright," and quite a few others. Great songs in their own right, but nothing that outstanding in their production.

I imagine that, if she herself felt Lindsey's production was still essential to bringing her songs to life, she'd put up with whatever tension and headaches come from working together.

I differ with you big time. Straight Back and Angel are not what I would call great. The arrangements are the most interesting thing about them. And the words... no. Anyone could of wrote those. I love That's Alright though. She is as good as the producer she works with, but even a great producer can't turn a pile of ****tt into gold. She got in her way.

I would doubt it, since it's in keeping with the type of things Stevie has said in the past. That's why I linked it to her former comments about the fans stealing music from her, because she has said similar things in the past, when there was no new music about to be released.

Oh, I don't doubt that she does want to know that there would be enough demand for Mac music to warrant the inherent stress of recording together. But I can also hear management saying, "Hey, don't tell the press that you're not very interested in recording with the band -- we have new songs to sell."

We definitely have to agree to disagree on "Angel" and "Straight Back." They might not be the greatest things Stevie's ever written, but they're still purely Stevie in writing style. Now what really makes both tracks stand out are her vocals. The production on both is straightforward and no-frills.

I'm not bashing Lindsey -- I'm just saying that I don't feel he's the be-all and end-all of producers for Stevie's music. Mind you, I don't think everything she's done on her solo albums is gold, but I also don't think that Lindsey still holds the key to making her songs extra special.

Ahh, well at least in this case we could get a few songs without an album, is what I meant. If that's all it ever is in the future, I guess I'm okay with that. To me it's better than a forced effort that's not necessarily guaranteed to sound very great.

The way Lindsey talked about sneaking Mitchell up under her bustle didn't help to sell these records either. So, if management was going to tell them not to say anything that would let the fans know Stevie wasn't enthusiastic, I think that he wouldn't have been saying how reluctant she was either.

For her part, saying fans don't want new music isn't exactly the way to promote 3 new songs, if your management told you to put a positive spin on things.

And That's where my criticism starts. Not because of her choices or being the artist that she wants to be, but that she's taken them "Hostage" by not recording with them while there's body of material that they want to put out. Well, let's first wait for what those Two aweful titles bring. Sad Angel and Miss Fantasy. And honestly, What's the chance of Without You being better than the original demo. OK the instrumentation may be better, but the singing can never have the same impact. Ever.

Yes, I understand that that's where your comment about her being "disrespectful" originated: from the fact that she's making these less than savory comments about fan reception to new music, when her bandmates have new music.

The public may very well hate new music, but don't say that when you're just about to unload the stuff on them.

True. He's had a long period of time not recording that much, although, after OOTC he started recording GOS between 95 and 96. The dance came and then he shelved it for SYW. But we don't know what he's been recording though the years that he did not finish. It still is a man that Kills daily time in his bunker.

It feels like a loveless marriage where the sex died years ago, but they stay together for the sake of the children, even though everybody is miserable because nobody's really getting anything they want.

Not releasing music because people will only steal it anyways? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. That's cutting off the nose to spite the face. She'd rather not sell 1.5 million albums with Fleetwood Mac because they should be selling 3 million (numbers firmly pulled out of ass)? Instead of getting half of something, she'd rather have a whole of nothing? And, why is that only a concern related to Fleetwood Mac records?

Not liking Lindsey's production? Okay, who says she has to have him produce her songs? She could use her own producer, or even different producers for every song. Just have Mick, John, and Lindsey be her backing band. That seems like a pretty simple solution, and one other multi-vocalst bands have used (i.e. Crosby, Stills, & Nash).

I'm just tired of the excuses as to why we're not getting a new record.

I think you hit it right on the nail. As much as I love Lindsey, and love seeing the band live......he is just not producing her music the way he used to.... he takes her music to a very different place, and not always her style. The Say You Will demo songs of Stevie's sounded better...then the full album versions. I think his guitar playing is amazing on her songs though. But, they should work with a new producer and mixer. As much as Stevie won't admit it...........she wants a hit out there, she want's a new song out there with her voice on it....on the radio. Lindsey, I don't think really cares anymore......I think he enjoys having the freedom to put out whatever he wants.......

But......I ADORE my Stevie, and.....I would love for some of her songs to be played on the radio. In Your Dreams.......was amazing in my opinion. There were very radio friendly songs on there.

I concur with Johnny - "Angel", "That's Alright" and "Straight Back" are all wonderful songs (three of my favourites in fact), but Lindsey's production was very straightforward and not in the least inventive. I actually think this approach benefited the songs because it allowed them to breathe, unencumbered of clutter. On the other hand, Lindsey's work on Stevie's Say You Will contributions for the most part left me cold. Whilst well intentioned, he didn't seem to grasp her songs as a whole.
I realise I'm in the minority here, but I did actually adore what Lindsey did with "Goodbye Baby". The layered guitars and Stevie's whispered vocal was a thing of beauty in my opinion. I also love the original demo, but we need to remember that they were recorded 27 years apart from one another. I really dig the evolution of this track, particularly as viewed from a mature woman's perspective. As for "Smile At You", well that's quite another matter...

Of course she has the right to do whatever she wants with her career.

I think at this point, as far as SN is concerned, she would rather be the captain of her own ship when it comes to recording. She pulls legend rank on Stewart and Grohl, and almost anyone else she works with. I am sure the deference is intoxicating. Dave Grohl moons at her like a lovestruck teenager in those live videos. And who wouldn't? Oh. That would be Lindsey.

Why record a money losing record with FM when she can record with these people who worship her, and she can maintain creative control? What would you choose? The psychodrama of spending 8-10 months fighting with your now 35 years gone ex? Or spending the "best year of your life" with Dave Stewart? Please. You grab the tour money. You play the Daytime Drama Cheese moments with FM. (God knows here on the Ledge there is proof of the obsession with that moth eaten coke infused Fromeo and Shawliet story. Many fangirls with still viable eggs practically ovulate when those two so much as hold hands). So you dust off the Shakespeare and give the droves what they want. And then go do your own thing where you call all the shots.

I said the same thing the other day, but nobody gave a crap. LOL You said it better anyway. She is not a goddess to Lindsey, she is just The Ex. To everyone else, she's STEVIE NICKS! Yes, I'm sure she'd much rather spend time with people who fawn all over her as opposed to LB.

True, true. I definitely understand what you mean. Although (and not to be nit-picky) she didn't say fans don't want new music -- she said fans don't want long albums. I think that's getting somewhat forgotten in this conversation.

In this latest round of interviews, she seemed more than fine with the idea of recording and releasing a new song here and there. Which again takes me back to the suspicion that her wariness largely comes down to her not wanting to commit to a long-term recording schedule with Lindsey. So she's looking for something to convince her that the potential headaches and battles wouldn't be for naught. Some validation that people would be excited to have a new Fleetwood Mac album in 2013/2014.

I think it's unfair to say she only wants to work with people who "fawn all over her." Grohl and Crow may be fans, but they're also both established artists in their own right. And they have most certainly worked with plenty of artists of Stevie's stature during their time in the business. I doubt either of them are still so moony, that they'd say, "no, that vocal is perfect Stevie -- I barely even noticed that you burped during the second verse."

(Not to mention the fact that Sheryl Crow got much more adventurous vocals out of her on "Sorcerer" and "It's Only Love," than anything Lindsey got out of her on 'Say You Will.')

And Dave Stewart is also far from a starry-eyed newbie. That man has been in the business for over 40 years, and has worked with everyone from Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney to Tom Petty and Bono. He's not going to play sycophant to Stevie Nicks.

The bottom line is, she and Lindsey have too much baggage. They bring out the worst in each other just as easily as they bring out the best in each other. If not moreso. Recording with Lindsey in the long-term is not enjoyable for her.

Fans want good albums. If it's long but good, like Tusk, then fans will eat it up. If it's long, where there's a good Fleetwood Mac album buried by tracks better suited for solo albums, like SYW, then she has a point.

i had coctails tonight, so i shouldn't wade back into this, BUT fans didn't "eat up" Tusk. WE love it, but it sold a fraction of Rumours. 4 million , i believe. And that's only because a double album counts as 2 sales. So only 2 million really.

Two million records is respectable. If the white Fleetwood Mac album had only sold two million, it would still have been considered a massive hit for the band, so it's all relative. Like a lot of great records, it's legend has grown over time.

Based on the ticket prices I'd guess their nightly guarantee more like 1.5m-2m per show.

Bon Jovi has a million dollar guarantee. So I doubt FM is higher. FM is nowhere near the draw on the road that Bon Jovi is. Bon Jovi still plays stadium venues and in the last ten years the only acts to top their grosses are The Stones, U2 and Madonna. Maybe Gaga once. My memory may fail me on the Gaga numbers. I will check with a few of my sources on this. You know that the whole second SYW leg was only done to pay back the promoters who lost their shirts on the first leg, right?

GDW is worth watching because it is done slightly differently every time. Like you, for me it is the one old song I hope they never drop. All the rest of them I've heard wayyyyy too many times.

For whatever reason this is the only song that Stevie has never phoned in. It is always different night to night, and she is always committed.

A lot of us thought the SYW songs were her best in decades, thanks massively to Lindsey's touch. Amazing how tastes differ, but her SYW work ended up infinitely better than TISL.

All a matter of opinion.

In any case, it is hard to imagine, all quibbles about production aside, how showing up to sing into a mike for some songs in a studio with FM is so arduous for Stevie. She has a bigger chance at a hit that way than solo.

Au contraire. I think the pressure of a hit is way more in the FM backdrop. Like I said, the expense requires selling tons to just break even.

I don't think that process is merely showing up and singing, in spite of the fact that she may not be there at the creation of the tracks. She and Lindsey, for all things we have seen, bicker and fight non stop about every part of the recording. It sounds as though they fight so much that she just doesn't wanna be bothered. I am almost 20 years younger than them. And I refuse to fight at work. I just won't. Why should she?

Of course there is no burping. LOL. But Stevie was Sheryl's IDOL. I love Grohl and he has a great pedigree. But he is about 5 rungs beneath her on the rock status chart.

(Not to mention the fact that Sheryl Crow got much more adventurous vocals out of her on "Sorcerer" and "It's Only Love," than anything Lindsey got out of her on 'Say You Will.')

Oh I think he totally did. His career can't come close to hers in terms of Icon status. Eurythmics sold a TON of records, and you and I both know he was the architect of much of that. But all anyone remembers is Annie. In spite of that, her solo career has been epic. And his has not. He is the Lindsey. And don't forget that he slept with Stevie. God knows what that means in the grand scheme of things. She went sniffing around for him backstage at the Wiltern the week they were on the cover of Rolling Stone and he somehow ended up back at her house.

The bottom line is, she and Lindsey have too much baggage. They bring out the worst in each other just as easily as they bring out the best in each other. If not moreso. Recording with Lindsey in the long-term is not enjoyable for her.

She does seem to always be into it. Lindsey's fav song. Lol

It's my fave live song she does with FM as well. It's ALWAYS amazing.

It feels like a loveless marriage where the sex died years ago, but they stay together for the sake of the children, even though everybody is miserable because nobody's really getting anything they want.

Great analogy. I agree.

True, true. I definitely understand what you mean. Although (and not to be nit-picky) she didn't say fans don't want new music -- she said fans don't want long albums. I think that's getting somewhat forgotten in this conversation.

She did say fans don't want long albums, but went on to add that the 3 songs have to prove themselves, indicating, to me anyway, that the public may not even want the 3 songs, let alone 10 or 12. She said just liking and enjoying songs, but them not being a big deal is what the music business is today. So, I took that to mean that the public today isn't really going to LOVE three songs, much less 12.

"If the public loves this - if they love these three [new] songs and we get back from them that they want more - then maybe we'll do more.

"If they just sort of like it and enjoy it, and it's not a big deal because that's what the music business is today, then we'll have had a great time doing these three songs and maybe we'll just make music for ourselves."

GDW isn't my favorite live song of hers (I like the energy of EO17 and Stand Back), but it certainly still holds up better than Dreams, Landslide and Rhiannon. And it always sounds a little different each tour because she thinks of new adlibs, which spark my imagination all over again.

I mean, I start interpreting "you can't see me now, you can't feel me now" in my head, just like you do the first time you get lyrics from a new album.

Also, when it comes to the back up singer discussion, to me the only songs they made better with FM were GDW and Beautiful Child.

Au contraire. I think the pressure of a hit is way more in the FM backdrop. Like I said, the expense requires selling tons to just break even.

i really don't get the expense part that people keep bringing up.

if you consider digital technology + Lindsey has a studio (and a record label) - where's this huge expense coming from??

the only huge expense i can think of is all of their separate management and lawyers, but i know nothing about the recording business these days so would love to learn.

Promotion costs money. And if it's a whole album, then packaging and distribution. I would hope that a whole album would not be a digital download only.

promotion yes, i can see that.

how is packaging any different than for any of their solo albums? and is distribution that much larger than for a SN solo album?

Lindsey solo distribution is definitely not huge (although i'm not sure about the economies of scale - if he solo covers as many stores as FM but just smaller number of copies)... but he did put out his last few albums and DVDs as hard copies - CD, DVD, blu-ray, as well as vinyl...

what else? to me it sounds like people are always talking about a year of studio time being the expensive part, and that part should definitely be a moot point, no? no need for a year, and no need to pay for studio time.

Because, presumably, they'd be manufacturing and shipping more of them.

No idea. Guess LB is with Azoff/Consolo, SN is with Kaufman and I have no idea who Mick is qith. Also no idea how things got sorted out after Azoff left LN. It is possible different managers have different ideas on how to move forward.

Frankly I don't really care. Digital dl only album is gazillion times better than no album in my book.

isn't Mick still with Carl Stubner?

Interestingly, Carl was sued by Motley Crue for working harder to promote Tommy Lee's solo stuff rather than Motley Crue's band efforts because, they said, he made more money from Tommy's solo work because he was Tommy's manager and didn't have to share mgmt fees with all the other managers when the band did stuff. Guess with Mac he's got Azoff and Howard Kaufman keeping an eye on him...

I don't thin he's w/ Stubner anymore.

I don't understand, though. Wasn't that entire first leg complete sell outs?

I would think that one of the perks to recording at home is to charge the label personally and pocket that money instead of it going to a studio. You may also be able to negotiate the advance by using that as a selling point. Just a guess.

Mick was with Stubner under Sanctuary but they were sold to LN as well.

But, collectively, as band, Fleetwood Mac has been under one management since 2004 - Front Line, now a subsidiary of Live Nation. At the end of 2011, Live Nation Entertainment and Universal Music Group launched a new joint venture management company. The partnership is managed by LNE’s Front Line Management Group, and the founder/CEO Irving Azoff, who was the LNE executive chairman. Of course, Azoff recently left LN but in this January RS article, it says he continues to manage FM: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/irving-izoffs-live-nation-exit-leaves-many-questions-unanswered-20130104

I would like to know about this, too. Did the SYW Tour not drum up enough cash/interest first time round?

No, I am almost 100% sure the first 40 dates they booked were all sold out.

That was the North American part. So was it the rest of tha first leg that they lost money on? If so, I suppose that would have been Europe.

michelej1
02-24-2013, 01:58 PM
But if they lost money in Europe, they wouldn't have been making it up to promoters in the U.S. on the 2nd leg, would they? They'd go back to Europe to make up the money, right?

Michele

well, were they trying to make up the money for the promoters, or for themselves? Did they somehow cover the shortfall with the promoters themselves and do more shows to recoup that?
