Just got an e-mail from Play.com to say that my order for Seeds We Sow has been dispatched. I should get it in a couple of days - most likely on release date. Excellent!

Mine doesn't dispatch until tomorrow because my Mother pre ordered with Amazon (obviously I paid. She just has the credit card) against my initial plans. The git. Knowing my luck it'll come on the 5th....of October.

Prepare for Lindsey's most consistant soloalbum to date. Consistant in quality, but also in sound and production. It's a winner. For me the faves are:
-the title track, ( just beautiful and tender )
-In Our Own Time , ( I think it's a masterpiece and I'm really curious what US radio does with the weird unconventional treatment of this song )
-TTWLG, (what a great great rocker, I cried from the solo till the end. Also the It Goes It Goes -screams are spinechilling),
-One Take
( he really shreds the Turner to pieces on this one, fabulous lyric, great Livesong I presume, with an extended solo- please extend it until it becomes almost ridiculous- this is the best soloriffing he did in years!)
-Rock Away Blind ( I sincerely think this one is one of his best songs, maybe even is going to win a spot above Shut Us Down in my fave-list)
- The End Of Time ( is simply a classic Mac song, I was afraid the studioversion would never reach the emotional level from the liveversion, but believe me, it does.)
It's an album with an approach, a vision. It's incredibly wellcrafted and original. And the guitarwork on this album is beyond stunning. Not only because of the skills, but also because of the feel. What an artist. There's no comparison.
And: for a lot of people a minor thing, but for me: a Milestone in Lindsey's songcraft: 11 tracks and NOT ONE fade out!!!!

Way to keep up with the collective, my good demon.
Mine's dispatched but probably won't be here for a couple of weeks, considering Amazon's piss poor track record with my orders. I just want to listen to it already. I've only heard Seeds We Sow, snippets of one or two and She Smiled Sweetly (obviously. Everybody has) but I need more. The stuff I have heard has a lot of promise in them, so I know I won't be disappointed. Stevie was the one who disappointed me with her latest release...

If your town is anything like mine, ordering will be the only way to go. I've never found a single Lindsey album in my home town. I've always had to go to the much larger cities to find something that doesn't come from the generic bubble gum "I'll be gone in five minutes" music club

I don't blame you at all. I do loathe chain stores, but we aren't a town that's well known for its smaller businesses. It's hard to find anything of my own personal tastes. Ah well. By next year I'll hopefully be settling in a new city, depending on how my MA applications work out.

I appreciate you taking the time to provide us with a little insight to an album many of us are waiting for with baited breath. It sounds like a very emotionally evocative album, nothing less than expected from such a hard working individual as Lindsey. Do you have a particular favourite you would pick above the others? I'm enthused by your description of "One Take", because I'm a lover of the extended solo guitar when placed with self fulfilling and beautiful lyrics. Probably why Country Feedback is my favourite R.E.M. song. Because the poetry juxtaposed with Peter Buck's splendid riff in its greatest live performance takes my breath away every time. That and Leave have always reminded me of Lindsey's own methods, and his extensive use of guitar to invoke emotions, more often than not his own. I think you might like the two R.E.M. songs. If you'd like, you could send me a PM and I'll be happy to send you the songs.
with this new album. Seriously, it is absolutely perfection. I don't think I have felt this strongly about one of LB's solo albums aside from OOTC. I absolutely can't believe how stunning it is. I am speechless. Of course, he never fails to amaze me but I am telling you all this is a work of art. I'm not posting this to boast because I did get it a little early, I just had to share and hopefully everyone will be able to express their thoughts once they have heard it.
I actually can't pick out a favorite because I am so blown away by it all. You know that thing LB said about it being his "best work?" Ummm....I'm almost feeling like "HELL YEAH!":xoxo:

If it as good or better than OOTC then that is really something .I consider OOTC one of the top five best albums ever released by Fleetwood Mac or any of it's past or present members.Looking forward to hearing it on Tuesday and to seeing Lindsey perform the songs in Napa next month!

I agree! The 3 songs I have heard are so amazing I'm beside myself! I have loved under the skin and GOS from recent years, but after awhile I always go back to OOTC! I think this new cd will be the the best of Lindsey we have heard yet. So excited to see him in Allegany :) Both he and Stevie are writing amazing songs, and I hope they keep it going either with FM, or a BN reunion!

I agree. For me, this is his best album without a doubt. Love the percussion on it. I'll admit I was wrong about Stars are Crazy, I suppose it was just so frantic you couldn't tell how it would be from the clip. All 11 songs on this album are amazing. I find myself in the position whilst listening to it that I'm loving whatever song is playing, but I also simultaneously want to be listening to the other 10 songs also. :blob2:
It's such a perfect album I almost can't begin reviewing it, but I will attempt to as soon as I can think objectively. I have to say, we are all aware that this man's guitar-playing is simply incomparable, but it is so amazing on here, in those segues between each moment in a song- those transitions from verse-to-chorus or what have you- that it is literally jaw-dropping.
Plus the songs are all so amazing!! Kristen did a FANTASTIC job sequencing as well. I tip my hat to her because each song flows so perfectly into the next. I can't even...as someone who has always been in love with Lindsey solo, this is even a milestone for me.

Considering all these fantastically positive reviews I'm reading as of late, I'm starting to believe Lindsey when he says that he considers the album the best of his career. I can't wait to listen myself and agree whole heartedly. From what I've heard of the songs though, I'm very much ready to love the album. Not sure about displacing Go Insane as my favourite, though. It will have to be VERY special indeed to do that :p Here's hoping it is!

Listening to the new album now... It's beautiful.
I think "Rock Away Blind" is my favourite. The guitar work is impeccable.
"End of Time" is a sweet sounding song with lyrics that make you wonder if it's Christian pop rock or what...
Gone Too Far sounds very much like it could've gone on OOTC...
Illumination is probably the most "Fleetwood Mac" sounding song to me... It's catchy and has a great chorus.
"She Smiled Sweetly" is very much like the version we've already heard but I think the vocals have been re-recorded and it might be in a diff key as well.
least favourite tracks (thus far)... One Take, Stars Are Crazy, That's the Way Love Goes
I actually don't have a least favorite song...it's just such a perfect album I listen to every song back to back and just fangirl. I'm seriously SO freaking proud to be a fan of this amazing artist and recognize his greatness and feel sorry for others who can't see or hear it. To those people, it sucks to be you is all I'm saying.
Anyway, I am obsessed with "In Our Own Time, " "Rock Away Blind," "The End Of Time," "When She Comes Down," "Illumination," "One Take," and I lllooooovvvveeee this version of "She Smiled Sweetly."
Perfect, perfect, perfect album...I am in love. He just aced it all the way through. And the tone of his guitar is gorgeous. And eventually I'm going to be very specific and describe how his voice actually blows me away on several of these songs.
Dang Lindsey. Whatever freaking inspiration came to you when you created this album is nothing short of AMAZING.
I feel the same way as you about replacing my fave (until now OOTC), but I can't even think about it right now. I'm just so happy that my bb LB is making fantastic and epic music in 2011. Such a beautiful record.

I'm still wondering how a Lindsey Janet cover would work. Now it's in my head I'm kinda stuck with it. Damn. Of course it's far from a great idea... but he could lent his whispering vocals and some weird Big Love style grunts in a cover of If?! Haha!!

Third day of listening: It's a small wonder; the diversity of songs, the rich melodies, the impeccable idiosyncratic production, the guts to do something different in every frigging song, using repetition in lyrics with always a slight addition/change musically, the rythmtracks that are highly original and different from eachother, it's all incredible. And the thing just floats. I don't have a fave on this record yet. It's simply stunning as a whole.
I don't know what happened with the guy, but he just HAS to go on with his homerecordings, although you could also state that he coul retire after this achievement. It's that amazingly good.

I've always loved Lindsey's ability to look past the conventional and do his own thing. It's what I try to do in my art work (you would NEVER catch me painting a watercolour or a landscape, for example. And I've been known to go skip diving in order to find materials worth using, a past example being an old, discarded toaster :p). It's almost a trademark of Lindsey's to push the boundaries, and nine times out of ten it pays off for him in my opinion. I'm so glad this album sticks with the trend.
Not that we want him to retire. I'm sure he wouldn't be able to, anyway. He'd probably stay in his studio working until he's unable to even use the lavatory unaided lol.

so my first impressions in terms of favorite and a bit less favorite tracks:
in our own time - perfect all around - imho the best one on the CD
illumination and one take - love how these two came out, love it when he gets slightly political in a song like in one take (i think one take is almost as perfect as IOOT, but in a very different way) - will one take replace i'm so afraid in concerts? he has to do one take on the upcoming tour!
rock away blind - ultimate LB, really hope he does this one on the tour too (maybe it can replace shut us down - sorry Gerald!)
she smiled sweetly - still beautiful, still love it, but i actually thought that the way he pronounces the words on GoS version was just perfect - so i like the verses from the original version better, although i probably prefer the stripped down chorus of this one
gone too far - i actually like this one, so OOTC-like, he can use that one together w/ another OOTC song in concert :wavey:
that's the way love goes - screams "it goes, it goes" are the only thing i like better than in the live version - live version was my favorite new song. since i don't know how to express this eloquently, for the lack of the better term i'm sorry to say but TWLG is too slowed down and pop-ified for my taste on the album when compared to live. i'm so happy the live version is also coming out soon!
least favorite - stars are crazy.
such diversity of songs, and they all fit so well together!

I like what you guys are saying about the diversity of songs.
Obviously, we had the ballads. Then I was struck by how different One Take and Illumination were from the rest, but I didn't know if there might be 5 songs or so that just melded together in a pleasant, but indistinguishable blend. Glad to hear that's not the case.

No. it's a unique set that hangs together very organicly, to my ears. Against the opinion of elle, I think that TTWLG is a great studiotrack that really rocks. Ofcourse it worked perfectly live, but I really feel he's captured that rockfeel in the production.

I don't want to tempt fate and have Elle contradict me, but I'm heartened by the fact that she didn't say anything about Lindsey's voice detracting from the songs in her post. I think that's a problem both she and I had when we heard samples.
I'm excited by the admiration from the first listeners and even more hyped for the tour. You know, there are songs like YKINW that the general public doesn't know, but they hear them live and are galvanized by the song's energy anyway. That's how I feel this tour is going to be. The people are going to react to the excitement of the new songs. It's like I never appreciated Doing What I Can until I heard it live and I think at least half of the SWS songs will have that same kind of spark in concert.

I actually think his voice is stronger on this album than the previous two.
I don't particularly like "Thats the Way Love Goes" either... But shackin up is right... the album just floats and has a great cohesiveness.
Favourite tracks:
Illumination
Seeds We Sow
In Our Own Time
Rock Away Blind
Gone Too Far
When She Comes Down
End of Time
She Smiled Sweetly
That's The Way That Love goes bothers me in the sense that it sounds like something you'd heard at a carnival. It's a little too bright in it's acoustics. Same goes for One Take... it almost sounds like he's gonna start rapping at one point. haha... They aren't bad tracks, just ones I'd imagine I'll be skipping over.

I'm sure you're right about the tour.
About the voicetrickery: Lindsey takes you with him in his world here. Maybe if you compile a mix-disc with two LB songs in between other tracks of other bands, you'll hear it. But on this album the highly cultivated sound sounds almost natural, if you know what I mean.

yes, unlike shackin'up and Peestie, i am not very enamored by the voice trickery. and maybe if we haven't heard the samples first i might be somewhat disappointed now? but i didn't notice it that much the first few listens, although my overall impression is that throughout most of the album he sounds more like his young voice then his current one - and i do like his current voice better. but must be that i learned to love the studio trickery aspect of it, b/c it doesn't bother me when i hear the whole record together - like Gerald says, it works here. and as i mentioned before, it bothers me even less since i know we'll also get live versions. in some songs, he seems to be singing in his natural voice (at least to my ears) - didn't have a chance to listen to it enough yet - but she smiled sweetly, illumination, one take come to mind - and i'm grateful for that.

yes, exactly what i was thinking - several of these new songs rock so hard that YKINW cannot even compare - we loved them on first hearing ever, before they were floated anywhere on youtube or different sites, before there were any samples, and when they were completely unfamiliar to us, remember? yes, we are hardcore lindsey fans, but still. btw, i do love studio version of illumination better than live, same with IOOT. and one take - everything on it just works together for me, even though i didn't like it that much when i just heard the chorus on the trailer - but the verses, the topic/words, guitar shred, the end - i think it all works together perfectly.
for TTWLG, there are slight differences even in the guitar parts from the live version, and i just think that everything in the live version was perfect, so maybe that's why i don't like the album version as much (but there's the whole pop-ified thing too).
About the voicetrickery: Lindsey takes you with him in his world here. Maybe if you compile a mix-disc with two LB songs in between other tracks of other bands, you'll hear it. But on this album the highly cultivated sound sounds almost natural, if you know what I mean.
that might be it! but i'm not completely sure, i think he didn't play that much with his natural voice on some of the songs - my guess is b/c those songs / topics required deeper voice, so he left it that way.

yes, unlike shackin'up and Peestie, i am not very enamored by the voice trickery. and maybe if we haven't heard the samples first i might be somewhat disappointed now? but i didn't notice it that much the first few listens, although my overall impression is that throughout most of the album he sounds more like his young voice then his current one - and i do like his current voice better.
It's funny that that one interviewer just thought that Lindsey was singing in a higher range (as if) and didn't seem to realize that his voice was sped up. I guess that was what Lindsey was going for and it must work for most ears.
I guess that's an improvement over the UTS raspy sound that alienated some. But you're right, maybe since we heard the clips first that that softened the shock.
Michele

yes, even reading the comments on this board, i'm surprised that like that interviewer many people comment on the sound of his voice on this album as that really is how he sounds naturally. i'm assuming many of these people were primarily here because of FM or SN, and maybe that's why they don't notice it that much. so maybe aside from just several of us, most people don't even notice it? and then some do notice it, but like it that way, and appreciate his play in the studio...

You know what I find the biggest problem with his studiowizardry? I'm pompous enough to live in the illusion that I "fully understand" his art and accept some things from him that make a crash with my own standards of esthetics and harmonics. After a while he drew me in and I became intensely fond of his experiments. Thing is, When he lights my fire again, I want to share that with the world. I play them my faves, like Johnny Stew, Play In The Rain, Shut Us Down, Great Day Bel Air Rain and from this album for instance IOOT, One Take and RABlind. People freak out and I always have to say that you must not judge from first listening. Open your inner door for it otherwise you'll never see the beauty of it. Man, I feel like a friggin preacher when I do that. Still, that feeling of being one of the happy few that live under the illusion of really connecting with his art, is part of my fandom.

People freak out i know... and i can see older songs that you listed wouldn't appeal to most people at first. some of them appeal to many when seeing/hearing them live (SUD really good example, and i think if he does Rock Away Blind live that might be somewhat similar). but One Take, Illumination, TTWLG seem to be something that can also be appealing to many people that were not necessarily already pulled into lindsey's fandom. and IOOT - i can see how some can be almost scared of it, but it seems it should be appealing to many who appreciate a bit different kinds of music?

We're in the same boat. I've tried to get friends warmed up to Lindsey but only the guitarists appreciate him. Strange thing, I have more success with the younger generation. My 20 something nephew and his friends love Lindsey. They're buying SWS, but I can't get any of my own friends to bite.:(
I feel the same way as you about replacing my fave (until now OOTC), but I can't even think about it right now. I'm just so happy that my bb LB is making fantastic and epic music in 2011. Such a beautiful record.
loved reading your first impressions!:xoxo:
for me, favorite album of his so far is the one that never came out - GoS1, original GoS. my first impression is that this one will replace it, for all the reasons we have all been stating in the last few days, and for me it is ahead of OOTC without a question.

Thanks elle! :wavey: I never like to overdo praise so I was really being conscientious about that when I made these statements. I have listened to the album all the way through for the third time and it's just...amazing.
I have to say that "In Our Own Time" is a masterpiece. I honestly think it's a breathtaking song and I officially will say it is probably my favorite on the album right now.

I'm super sleepy, so one listen before I hit the bed, but I HAD to listen!! :blob1:
Seeds We Sow - GREAT opener! I love the ending guitar part...it's stunningly gorgeous. I love the echoing of "seeds we sow".
In Our Own Time - What a great melody! Such a great shuffle-esque quality to it. I know this will sound strange, but it reminds me of some Wild West tune. I have no idea.
Illumination - I loved this when I heard it from his live concert. This version sounds more contained, so I like the live version better, but this is such a freaky cool song! The waterfall effect of that guitar is mesmerizing. Such a catchy chorus too. Earworm.
That's the Way Love Goes - First impression is video game lullaby. LOL Oh Lindsey. I prefer the versus over the chorus...those versus give me a lump in my throat and I'm not entirely sure why. They sound so tender, I think. This sounds like it could have gone on GOS.
Stars Are Crazy - The melody of the opening guitar is friggin' gorgeous. I think this one is better live too. His voice soars on it. The acoustic guitar porn on this album is INSANE. I like that the song mentions stars and it sounds so ethereal.
When She Comes Down - Am I crazy that the chorus sounds almost gospel-ish? Interesting! I love when he lets his voice soar. There is so much going on in this song...good gravy.
Rock Away Blind - HUGE smile on my face when he got to the chorus. That guitar work is....there are no words. :) And there are the tears welling up at the ending guitar. GORGEOUS.
One Take - HOLY CRAP. The quickness in his delivery! Hello Bad*SS Lindsey! HA!
Gone Too Far - This has an 80's feel to me. I love the 80's so I dig it!
End of Time - Oooh, when it started I sang "What's the world comin' to." EEK!! Thank goodness it wasn't that song. Heh.
She Smiled Sweetly - I've always liked this song. What a terrific ender! I like the new recording of his vocals.
Bonus Tracks:
End of Time (Acoustic Version) - I definitely like this better than the album version. It's just this side of country/pop to me. There goes that soaring voice again! YAY!
Seeds We Sow (Electric Version) - WTH? LOL Well, this is some spacey stuff. I'm not liking this really. I prefer the album version.

My first impressions...
The songs definitely seem to collectively flow together better than the past two albums, maybe it's because all the old GOS material spread out over the last two albums changed the listening experience for me...
Album really picks up with Stars to When She Comes Down to Rock Away Blind. Very shimmery album. I do think he belts it better on the live version of Stars too, though. Don't Care for One Take really. Sounds like he's trying too hard to put a bad ass song on the album. I love the electric version of Seeds We Sow though! Interesting stuff going on in the background...Gone Too Far is prolly the most OOTC-eque of the songs, but the album as a whole does not remind me of OOTC...

Save me. It's gone too far.
SortaSavage once outdid himself with a chart comparing feelings different websites had for each of the bandmembers. I don't want to fall into a cliche, but if someone's a leather clad deity, why deny it? Why keep trying to pretend otherwise? Resistance is futile.
Seeds We Sow - I think this one would have worked as well or better as a closer. My favorite part is the end, where his whisper flutters over the guitar.
In Our Own Time The fire just doesn't burn as fiercely as it did live.
The chorus loses some force, I miss trailing from "still in my mind" to the fury of "it wouldn't make any difference. We crossed that line." I think the song loses some of its meaning when you lose that sharp contrast. I think the song speaks of both regret and resentment and the album version doesn't capture the two tones as well.
Illumination - I like it, but it sounds like he's singing with a wad of gum (or worse) lodged in his cheek.
That's the Way Love Goes - I don't really like the helium voice, but at the end of this song it works with the way "it goes, it goes, it goes . . . " It's like the song is winding up to bat, just as it's ending. What are the lyrics? He went into her dungeon and saw her secret??
When She Comes Down - I agree that this one has an almost gospel quality. Of course, the layered vocals does indeed make you think of harmonies past. If there's one song for which you call Christine up and ask her to join you, this would be that one. The song has a rise and swell that's so uplifting that I almost resent Lindsey coming in and breaking it up. When I read the lyrics posted, I thought "now she's falling" meant falling in love. But the way Lindsey delivers that line in a halting, discordant fashion, I now understand that he means she's falling down the stairs and breaking her neck! I'd prefer not to have the flow of the song interrupted. But it's quite beautiful.
One Take - Incredible. This guy will not die. His guitar will catch fire during the guitar solo on this song and he'll ascend straight into heaven. Put a halo on it. Oh and the way he drops it down at the end, weakening as the middle class disappears . . . as a statement, I find it much more effective than Peacekeeper or WTWCT. THAT'S RIGHT.
Gone Too Far - Obviously, the more I listen, my preferences will change, but right now this is my favorite. So beautiful and vulnerable.
She Smiled Sweetly - Don't like the vocals. At one point he gets so husky and breathy it sounds like a porn call.
This is a masterpiece. I'm not going to say it's my favorite, because I still like GOS, weigh them both in total, and GOS might win out for me. But the peaks on this album reach an almost spiritual level. Reaching up to the crazy stars.

Seeds We Sow - Already have/listened to this, and I love it. The melody and vocals, despite him probably not setting out for them to be so, I find quite haunting. And his fingering is excellent. I love it when a guitar is played in such a bare fashion that I can practically see and feel each movement and flick of his fingers over the string.
In Our Own Time - Oooo...Well the very light drum work in the background is quite dishy, isn't it! With this sort of song, sometimes I feel as though the vocals just don't quite match with the music. But the timing on this is splendid. And I do like the chorus because it almost feels more like a bridge, to me. It's hinted at without getting too bold, fitting well with the line "the implication of a crime". Because, as much as I love Lindsey, sometimes his chorus' are a crime lol. The final little guitar riff is certainly crazy, which I do love of Lindsey.
Illumination - Uhm. Well the start up isn't THAT promising. Kind of reminiscent of 80's Glam Rock. But the song gets better as it goes along, and I do like the fact that during the verses the guitar is barely audible, allowing the Drums a little limelight. Which does fit very well as I couldn't see a guitar working too well with the verse vocals unless he was going for almost a Kurt Cobain feel. Although the chorus isn't the BEST of the album, I'm still singing it to myself. So it's definitely catchy.
That's The Way That Love Goes - Aww. The opening guitar is very sweet, almost lullaby-ish. And that's how the song goes until the bridge and chorus, where it kicks up to a crazy level. I LOVE IT! It is reminiscent of the ambiguity and constantly shifting moods of love. He captures his contest in his music very well. The addition of bass in the background is a very welcome addition to detract from the slightly sickly feel of the guitar during the higher parts. TtWLG doesn't seem to be too popular amongst his fans, but you can certainly count me as a lover.
Stars Are Crazy - Can't say I'm a huge fan of the title. But let's get past my aversion to crassness lol. There's something slightly flamenco about his guitar playing on this track, which is kind of getting stuck in my teeth a little. This is an example of a problem Lindsey commonly has with his work. That his music overshadows his vocals. Maybe if the volume button could have been turned down a notch or two on the music before he sang, it would have been much more fitting. Having said that, all in all, the song is nice. Just not one of my absolute favourites. I get the feeling that if I sat down and read the lyrics properly, I may just appreciate them more than the song itself.
When She Comes Down - Starts a little like a song I would hear on the radio and then quickly change the station. I'm not a HUGE fan of the background music, but I am enjoying the lyrics and vocals. I hope he performs this live with just the guitar. Add that and the almost choir like addition for the chorus and it should be smashing. Just missing a little something, to me. But I still like it. Hang on.......actually.....As the song progresses....The music is growing on me. I'm singing along so that must count for something, haha! Would still love to hear an acoustic version, but not so bad.
Rock Away Blind - Muuuuch better intro. I can see his fingers moving again :D And I am very much enjoying his patented "vocal echo" over the top, as well as a slight hint of beat that I am tempted to accuse of being foot stamping. When he keeps music more simple without throwing too many concepts at it, he's at his best. Though adding a little more for the chorus does help to take the song over the edge into "Wowville".
One Take - Ooo...Starts very early rock and roller... I am finding it very difficult to write anything whilst moshing and headbvanging during this song. I love the speedy vocals during the verses...and then the chorus!!! Oh my.... My brain hurts from head banging so hard. I cannot top the description Michelej1 gave this song. So on the button! This is my favourite song of the album. I'm laughing like goofy, I'm enjoying it so much. Hang on.....Air Guitar time. Be right back.
Gone Too Far - Despite the beat, this song is incredibly soft. Again it suits his vocals very well. And again the addition of extra vocals in parts of the song work well to add a more vulnerable and open err to the song. He does sound very much like he's opening up his soul for us to have a peek around. Might need more than one track for that job though, lol.
End Of Time - I don't know why but I immediately picture a large, lush and green garden when I picture this song. Don't ask me. The verse vocals are nice, but I think they're topped by the higher chorus. Another song where I feel as though he's laying himself open completely. They do say that exposing weakness is the strongest thing you can do, and judging by the quality of this album they aren't wrong.
She Smiled Sweetly -Although I am a great fan of the demo, I've realised that I much prefer it in its most cultivated fashion. The demo sounded raw and primitive, which I loved for its own merit. But this version has the feeling of somebody singing their lover to sleep. It's so beyond sweet. I wonder if he ever played Kristen or one of the children to sleep with this.
I feel guilty about the fact that all I could think of while listening was "This albums kicks Stevie's arse". But it does. In Your Dreams pales compares to it. I'm sorry Stevie. I love you. But he's just.....better than you at music. This is definitely one of his best albums. Encroaching on a par with OoTC, but not quite. OoTC will always be the reigning King, I'm sure.
I'm going back for another listen :)

Christy, I know what you mean about feeling a catch, but this is the song that does that for me and the lyrics . . . so sublime. 'Waiting for my ocean to rise, long after I've gone. And your conversations all turn to lies and you wake up singing my songs.' The words almost sound vengeful, but they're not mean, because he's the one who needs saving.

And the fitting thing is, this sounds like an ocean song. Unlike the other 3, Lindsey and Mick don't talk about sailing that much, but this song puts me in mind of it. It speaks of slow escape. I don't want to say it brings Christopher Cross to mind, but it definitely takes me away.

The songwriting, lyrically and melodically, is top notch. If he had turned this in as a demo to Fleetwood Mac, I think they'd be like: OK, Linds, let's DO that double album. And then they'd lay down some real drums on these tracks.
For me the next biggest flaw is the he didn't sequence it a la Neil Young. Open with Seeds We Sow (electric) and close with Seeds We Sow (acoustic). THEN, I think it would be a contender. But as it is, I, in my first impressions, prefer the SOUND of UTS and the peaks (DYMM! WFY! LRD! BAR! RPTF!!) on GOS.
My faves so far (chronologically): TTWLG, SAC, WSCD, RAB, GTF, EOT. And I am not digging SSS, unfortunately comparing it to the fuller symphonic sound of the demo.
Looking forward to second impressions...

I'm not sure -- I really love GOS. I'll have to listen a few more times. I'm severely disappointed in the recorded version of Stars Are Crazy. I loved the live version - he puts more emotion in it. It reminds me of Shut Us Down and Say Goodbye -- the recorded versions were faster and both were so much more effective live in my opinion. But, overall this album doesn't disturb me like GOS does either.

Ok, so I just finished up my first listen of the album. First of all I have to disagree with all those who feel this is the 21st century Out Of The Cradle. I actually hear far more shades of Law & Order and especially Go Insane on this album.
As far as favorites, Illumination is the most delightfully quirky song... what a fun surprise! That song is like a sonic Shawshank Redemption... you never know what's going to happen next! :p I think it's the coolest thing on the whole damned album. My other big fav is Rock Away Blind... it's pure perfection. I very much like the updated version of She Smiled Sweetly too. As a whole, the album is beautifully arty and nicely paced.
Oddly enough the songs I assumed would be my favs are actually at the bottom of my list: Stars Are Crazy and When She Comes Down. They're fine songs, they just didn't grab me the way I expected them to.
All things totaled, I think this is a great little album and a real progression for Lindsey. Is it his best work? I don't think anything will ever eclipse Out Of The Cradle for me. But I definitely think this album easily stands shoulder to shoulder with his first 3.

The only thing that reminds me of OOTC is Gone too far with that electric guitar popping up in the background. Other than that the album is very shimmery and even a bit quirkier like older LB albums. The album really picks up with Stars to When She Comes Down and into Rock Away Blind. I'm not crazy about One Take, but that doesn't matter. I love the vocals on this album. Seeds We Sow electric version is just great. It's dazzling and a good break from all the fingerpicking on the album....

Starshine, I think you can only attain the bonus tracks on Amazon. For now. I would go for it, though, because they are special.:xoxo:
Eventually I'll calm down and write a song-by-song but right now just let me fangirl over the whole thing....sigh...

Sorry louie, but OOTC is his third...
That's what I said... Seeds We Sow stands shoulder to shoulder with his first three albums:
1) Law & Order
2) Go Insane
3) Out Of The Cradle
And out of those 3 albums, Out Of The Cradle will always be his masterpiece in my eyes. :)
My wording probably just wasn't clear. I think Lindsey's first three albums are his strongest, most consistent works. I'm not a fan of Under The Skin. Gift Of Screws was better than UTS, but I don't think it can stack up to Lindsey's first 3 works when viewed as an entire album (though GOS has some fantastic individual songs). Seeds We Sow is both a great album AND has great songs which can stand by themselves on their own merits.

well, think of it this way - he gets many more ears hearing it this way, and i would think that's what he wants. plus, i would never miss on having the actual physical copy of SWS - mine is on the way and should be here tomorrow. but i couldn't wait!
i did consider buying just 2 extra tracks, but it was almost easier to get the whole thing for just 2 dollars more  - frankly in the age of illegal downloads seems like a smart way to market and get at least something for it

Add me to the downloaded + bought a copy club...
I love Seeds We Sow (both versions), In Our Own Time, Illumination, TTWLG, Rock Away Blind, Gone Too Far (which reminds me a LOT of You Do Or You Don't), and She Smiled Sweetly.
One Take is very cool, though I'm not sure it works for multiple repeats. Love the lyrics and the shreds!
Stars is still my least favorite and End Of Time lags just a bit.
When She Comes Down is absolutely beautiful, which helps you forget how repetitive the lyrics are.
The first thing I listened to in full from this album was the electric SWS with headphones at 2 AM yesterday. I still think it's amazing (sincerely, not sarcastically). If nothing else, it means LB can still write songs without "orchestral guitar"!

 Perhaps! I like the song but I don't think it sounds vengeful... I really like the guitar part where it sounds echo-y in the background. Whatever technical word I'm trying to say. lol
No, I don't think it sounds vengeful either. That was my point. The words on their own sound like he's trying to rub the other person's pain in, especially waking up singing his songs. Presented in another tone that could be a jeer. He describes each detail of the other person's loneliness, in a way that could be insensitive, like when a doctor probes your wound too deeply. But I like what Bee said about "soft". The soft way the words are sung reveal his tender concern. And the "yeah" he throws in just sounds so raw and unadorned.
And basically to me, what he's asking to be saved from is her hurt. That seems to be what's gone too far, that's what he wants to stop, because he doesn't describe his own sadness (which is surely there), just hers.

I know! Dungeon?? Is that what they call his studio?
Does Stevie ever come to his studio?
Actually I think that Stevie has described the coffee plant like that, because they were there at night alone, when everyone else was gone. She said it was scary and they just locked themselves in one room.
Both Ooooh my Love 's castle walls and this dungeon remind me of the coffee plant.
I still like Stars, but I do think live was better. His wail just seemed to be crying out against the stars more in concert. Whereas it's a less emotional love song on the album.
Oh, so in which ways did GOS disturb you?

Yeah, I didn't understand you either. I thought you were basically saying that it didn't measure upt to OOTC, but was as good as Law & Order and Go Insane, which I guess is not the worst thing you can say about it, but it seems to mean he's going backwards and I think with GOS and SWS he's going forward.
I do put this above OOTC, but only due to the passage of time. I don't like this more than GOS, but it's right up there.
My apologies to UTS. I will just take my Show You How and leave the rest of you in a little closet that no one opens. But I did love you once.

It's weird. I think the songs are all very very pretty and some are very touching. (Although I have a major gripe with One Take--but not MUSICALLY!) But I think I would place the album with OOTC at the bottom of my list. So far. I look forward to finding out what I think of SWS in a week.

I did the Amazon download last night but will buy the CD ..there is some beauftiful work here and it all hangs together as an album maybe even more than GOS although the highpoints on GOS may reach greater heights .It will take more listens to decide..OOTC remains his masterwerk to me.Close to a perfect album that one is and would have been the finest pop/rock release of 1992 IMO if a little college band out of Athen Ga. hadn't released one of the greatest albums of all time in that same year.

More detailed feview to come but so far track that has jumped right out at me is That's That Way That Love Goes - brilliant. I love One Take and also, In Our Time sounds, to me, like it could have come right from Out Of The Cradle. As I said though, more detailed review to follow.

Downloaded SWS and have been listening to it all day! Some of these songs definately sound like they could have been on OOTC. That's The Way Love Goes rules. I keep repeating that song.
Other Songs I keep repeating. Rock Away Blind which is brilliant. SWS the electric version reminds me of Go Insane era Linds, wish it was on the regular edition. End of Time is a classic as is She Comes Down.
I think they only song I need to warm up to is Gone Too Far.

I love it. All of it. The only one I'm iffy about is Seeds We Sow...but, I have been from the beginning (I think it's the ra-ta-ta's, to tell you the truth. Someone used to do that on a song WAY in the past and I can't figure out who or what the song was. I'm thinking something vaudevillian, but...who knows. I am pretty sure it must be tied to some sort of neurotic trauma. Most things are;-)
But I'm not skipping over it or anything.
OOTC? I can only see the similarities in the extremely introspective lyrics. The delving for greater meaning. So...yeah, in that case, I can make a comparison.
I love, love, love, (love, love, love)...When She Comes Down and Gone Too Far. Stars are Crazy was my favorite live version from the show he did a few months ago...and I do love it but it sort of pales a bit from the live version. Still, it's great.
End of Time is really ... I don't know. Makes me kind of choke back a sob. There is this funky thing that happens when you reach middle age that makes you think of stuff like that and he really captured it.
And the funkified SwS...is hysterical. I kind of wish he'd do it that way in concert.
I haven't really spoiled myself for this, other than listening to the live versions months ago, so...today was a real gift.

If you're thinking vaudeville, I'd say it's from a past life trauma.:)
I don't like that on SWS and on the electric version, I don't like the "no no no no no no no-no" part either. Use your words, Lindsey.

Wow, Michele!! Knowing how highly you rate GOS this speaks volumes on the quality of SWS. I am so completely stumped. As you know, OOTC is my "album for all albums" and, imo, the greatest thing that ever came out of FM/solo FM. But the more I listen to this the more I go, "were you trying to top yourself LB?"
I am considering my ranking carefully, but it could be a tie. Anyway, I am  that you have UTS so low...but I understand. To me, that album was and still is beautiful. But I can't put it on the level of SWS. Honestly, GOS was like a leap away from it as well, but I was familiar with some of the work on both those records prior to so I always sort of connected them in my mind. But this one is just different for me...
I still say if he released GOS as he originally intended it before FM ate it up it would destroy OOTC.
You're probably right. But as is we have to go by what we got and, frankly, GOS was amazing as it was. However, SWS is amazing-er to me.:wavey:

I'm listening to OOTC right now and its been a LONG time since I've done that. It is a friggin' masterpiece. There are definitely threads of OOTC, Go Insane, Law and Order, UTS and GOS in SWS. I love that!!
I believe that Lindsey's voice was at its ultimate during this time. Strong with just the perfect tone plus some weathering along with youthfulness.
I would say at this moment in time, OOTC remains my favorite LB solo, but I would love to listen to all his solos back to back. THAT will be awesome and interesting.
That said, SWS is a phenomenal album and I cannot wait to get my CD so I can listen while taking in the lyrics and obsessively reading all the liner notes and looking at the pictures like in the "good ol' days." ;)

Gift of Screws and Under the Skin were nice pop excursions that I fealt were necessary for Lindsey to do, however, they never pulled me in. There is something so RIGHT about Seeds You Sow that has just pulled me in.
It's perfect. It feels somehow like it is my personal album. When I first heard the album, I thought ok where is the rock. I guess I wanted 70s rock. But after repeated listens I think this album is just genious. I love the fact the song lengths are all over the place and that this album has it's own sorta energy outside of 70s and 80s rock, which people try to imitate.
This album to me is Tusk Punk Pop. It's edgy, and the whole Disrupting Beauty theme is in there, but he did a much better job on the lyrics and melodies. The album does not feel as removed or filtered as other efforts.
If I could make a record, this is the type of record I would do. It's one of the best things he has ever done.

24 hours later and repeat listens all day...I can't get enough. For me it's a perfect record. I skip nothing. The original GOS could have been the best collection Lindsey ever did if it had been released as submitted in 99. Aside from that unreleased gem, Seeds We Sow is the best album he's made. Each song is special in it's own way but everything fits together perfectly as a collection. I can't even pick a favorite track. I'm glad I didn't listen to any of the early clips or the live versions. Didn't get spoiled or tainted by other notions of how things would sound. I had no expectations and now I'm just blown away!

Well......after 3 listens to this thing. I can say........He does it again:thumbsup: Seriously......he just keeps coming out with winners. Very beautiful record. On my first listen, Illumination jumped out me, What a kooky fun infectious song. The chorus is so catchy. The first time I heard When she comes Down. I swear I swooned:lol: Perfect ballad. Other tracks I like are End of Time, which has a VERY Law and Order, Trouble Type vibe.
Rock away blind, as Louie said is just utter perfection, Beats out Bel Air Rain for me. Really this album is close to perfect. I say close because I'm not big fan of One Take......It's sounds like Go Insane era Linds.....and I hate GI. She Smiled Sweetly is a little too breathy here for me.
Basically I was not disappointed...Top notch, As expected. Is it better then Cradle...no. It's tied at number 2 for me with GOS. I'm Proud of you Lindsey. Made me remember that In your Dreams was just a detour to this album for me.

Did I mention this is a f'ing great album?
I'm letting go of what might have been and recognizing this as a ravishing testament to one man's mastery of two elements of music: melody (which rides the groove of my emotions) and the guitar (which is like an extension of his psyche).
My ONLY complaint is the last line of "One Take." I think I'll send him a copy of Barthes' Mythologies.
For a punk corrective, I direct y'all to X's "The-Have-Nots" from their masterpiece album Under the Big Black Sun.

Does anybody else feel as though, in the contest between Lindsey and Stevie's new releases, Lindsey well and truly kicked Stevie's bum? As much as I love Stevie as a person, her music more often than not disappoints me. In Your Dreams definitely following the trend. I'm not saying I don't like any of her music, because she has created some beautiful songs in her time. But Lindsey is just far more consistent than she is. Sometimes I get the feeling that Stevie releases music for the sake of it. But Lindsey doesn't release music unless he's sure of it's great quality, and thus album is proof of that.
I regret picking favourites at the beginning, because I love them all. Though Stars Are Crazy, When She Comes Down, One Take, Illumination and That's The Way Love Goes are the stick out songs for me. Although I agree that it isn't quite his best (though I seem to be on my own in my deep love for Go Insane), it is very very close.

I'm enjoying the crazy Seeds We Sow (electric version) more, but I vastly prefer the album version. The electric version does sound like something from Go Insane era. Plus, we get an insane guitar solo with it!
I downloaded Sleeping Around the Corner about an hour ago, so I've not had much time with it, but it definitely doesn't fit with SWS. What a strange song. LOL "I'm your little Red Rover." Well, thank you for ruining my 2nd fave song EVER, whoever said that to him.

Um, yes. But that's probably why I just don't go on the SN board much. She started bothering me a few years back with all the disparaging LB comments she was making (when they were apparently at odds). I just felt like it wasn't necessary for her to drag him through the mud so much when he was, for the most part, quite classy and kept his mouth shut. But since then, I have forgiven her and moved on. I accept Stevie for who she is and realize that airing her dirty laundry and past affairs in public is just her thing. I'm back to feeling more mellow towards her, but I have never been a huge fan of her solo stuff. I bought In Your Dreams, even though I said I wasn't going to, because she is someone who has impressed me in the past with some of her musical endeavors. Mainly in the Mac, and mainly on Tusk...but that' neither here nor there.
In any case, I wasn't all won over by In Your Dreams but I think it's got some pretty songs on it. I love FWIW and the Vampire song, her New Orleans song, and the one that has has some references to Jane Eyre. Her solo stuff has never been a big love of mine (no pun intended). I actually love Christine Mcvie's solo efforts more than Stevie's, but I do appreciate a lot of SN's songs. Her albums just...bore me.:sorry:
It's always been about LB to me. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. He is a musical genius, and his stage presence and ability to rock hard and beautifully simply enthrall me. His albums are always fascinating and, in most cases, works of art (ahem, THIS ONE). And he is also quite an enigmatic man who is somewhat of a mercurial and complex figure. He says so much and yet says very little and there's a mystery about him that is enticing. He is also a sweetheart to his fans, incredibly magnificent live, and the best guitarist I have ever seen in person. So, yeah...he's always sort of been the fire for me in my FM fandom. I can't apologize.:wavey:
I regret picking favourites at the beginning, because I love them all. Though Stars Are Crazy, When She Comes Down, One Take, Illumination and That's The Way Love Goes are the stick out songs for me. Although I agree that it isn't quite his best (though I seem to be on my own in my deep love for Go Insane), it is very very close.
I am so going to listen to Go Insane again- it's been a while- but I can never get over how my feelings for that album changed so dramatically. I hated it at first and then, after listening to it 5 times I instantly became obsessed with it. I thought it was like nothing I had ever heard. In any case, it's still amazing. But OOTC has my heart and now this one is like fighting for the biggest part of my heart with OOTC. It's such a stunning piece of work, this one.

Yes yes and yes. I loved IYD. but Lindsey, IMO, wins this face off. However i'm a dyed in the wool Lindsey fan, so I'm tainted. He has been FAR more consistent then Stevie has been. Bucky hit another home run.
Mick
I suppose we are a little biased :p Though at the very beginning I was a Stevie girl. She was my gateway to the Mac. But as time went on I appreciated Lindsey more and more, and Stevie less and less. I suppose I got tired of the same sort of thing from her. Lindsey's constantly changing my expectations of him.

Whenever I know to expect disparaging comments against Lindsey, I tend to avoid that media, be it in an interview, written article or otherwise. I don't know why, but I do get rather wounded by them. I'm very much a fan of my rose tinted spectacles, and when I develop an opinion about somebody I admire greatly, I find it crushing to learn otherwise. I myself have never been a fan of her almost "kiss and tell" way of conducting herself. Lindsey has it right. Just keep silent and let the storm pass. It's not very classy of her to be so open about such private things. But aside from that negative trait, as a person I do like her very much. Probably because she reminds me so much of myself. That does sound a little conceited I suppose, but we're just as flighty, neurotic and altogether ditsy as each other.
I am so glad that you gave Go Insane another try. As is Law And Order, it is certainly an acquired taste. But once you acquire it it's an opinion that tends to grow stronger as time goes on. Whenever I listen to the album I always find something new to love that I never quite noticed before. It's like when I meditate to classical music. I hear new notes and small undertones of instrument I never got before. When I love music enough, I do tend to go into a meditative state, when allowed to focus my attention on it fully, when listening. But then again, I also tend to channel the emotion of the person performing too, lol. Probably why I cried my way through my first listening of Underground, Down On Rodeo and Wait For You hehe.

I am in love with Stars Are Crazy. Even though he didn't write it, it's my fave as of right now, I think.
It really is impossible to choose between all these amazing songs though. It would be excruciating to try to rank these of fave to least fave right now.
Even though I don't write music, I get why Stevie says "I can't choose a favorite. They are like my children." because I'd feel like I was slighting the least fave. I can see "When She Comes Down" (not saying it's my least fave, just using as example! LOL) saying to me "Why don't you love me? Why am I not worthy?!"
So Amazon only shipped my CD today, sigh. However, I did download the exclusives from iTunes and Amazon. Then I remembered Spotify! Yay, I got to listen to it.
First impressions: I love Rock Away Blind and Gone Too Far. Some of the others are going to have to grow on me, e.g. One Take and the vastly different album versions of Stars and End of Time (which are my favorites of the live versions we've heard). I'm still not a big fan of all the vocal manipulation, but I don't hate it.
Nico and Bee, I'm sure I'll be in the minority on this board, but no I don't think Lindsey's album is better than Stevie's. I love them both, and to me, they really aren't comparable. Apples and oranges, I like both fruits, thank you very much!:p

I'm going to have to listen to the album again all the way through, but the two songs that stand out are When She Comes Down and Rock Away Blind. When She Comes Down has the potential to get very high on my personal list of all-time favorite songs.

I would not say that I like Lindsey's album better than Stevie's either. Soundwise, I'm taking music from all 3 with me to a deserted island.
However, when it comes to SWS and IYD, since Lindsey -- for better or worse -- wrote, produced, arranged, played and sang everything himself, my estimation of the two definitely falls into different categories and always has. I wouldn't call it apples and oranges, exactly. Maybe coconut and banana.

Do coconut and banana blend well together? ;)
I see what you're saying, and I also hold Lindsey to a higher standard. I'm just so happy with (and surprised, yeah I'll admit it) of how good Stevie's album is.

Yes, find many of her ways quite endearing. I can also see how you can relate to her, as you seem sort of an emotional/artistic type. Believe it or not, I have my inner Stevie as well. Many of her lyrics, not all but many, always touch me in that highly romantic way that she encapsulates so perfectly. Plus, her 1970's style rocked.

This is all so true. I think I opened a new sound wave in being when I got turned into Lindsey's solo music. It was him/i] who opened the door to Mac for me. For, although I was very aware of Stevie and her presence, she didn't really draw me in. It was seeing LB on "Live in Boston" and what a crazy madman he was. Then I started with his solo stuff and BAM! But [i]Go Insane is a very cathartic album in so many ways and I really got drawn into that side of it. Some people love it for the crazy sound, others for the perfect sequence (yes I had to throw that part in), but I just really adore the emotional expression throughout the most, and the music. Damn great album.

No comparisons. They are two completely different solo artists. Period. I won't even go there. I'm proud of both of them. And, for that matter, I'm super-proud of Stevie for releasing a new CD after 10 years, when she really didn't plan on doing one again. And for going forth and touring without dumping more than one song from the setlist. That's a HUGE thing for her because I don't think she is as daring as Lindsey, as an artist/painter/machine operator.
Getting back on topic, I kind of like that strange little iTunes song. The first half minute, I was kind of like WTF? (Much the same reaction as I had to GoS-the song). And, then it grew on me instantly. Fun stuff.

Well, I'm surprised at how LB's album somehow brought the fangirl out of me again. He never fails to amaze me, but then he sort of amazes me to higher degrees than I thought possible a lot, and this is a shining example.

And it depends on what you're in the mood for. Even Lindsey's "light" songs have a certain density and complexity. There are so many ways you can break them down.
But I've always liked Stevie's music. I wouldn't say she brought me into Fleetwood Mac, but I will say that Sara was the first song that made me inquire more about the band, want to buy something. Of course, I don't attribute Sara to just Stevie.

I need more time before I do some polls (Lindsey vs Stevie) and lists (rankings), but, for right now, I'd say Stevie's album wins. I think it's (even) richer and more satisfying. But, wow!, what a competition!!! And, if I had to choose, "When She Comes Down" and "End of Time" are my favorite tracks.
But I'm heartbroken because I believe we could have had the Fleetwood Mac double album of my dreams this year. :( (Another future thread topic)
I cawn't believe I'm going to say this BUT, I can't wait for Dave Stewart to produce a Mac album!

I'd prefer they were b-sides.
I'd prefer they were b-sides.
Yeah, but do they even do b-sides anymore? The entire concept of album and single releases has changed drastically, even from when I was a young girl. I can't even understand it much anymore but I was speaking to a couple of hipster teens the other day- huge music fans. And I mentioned something to them about how b-sides of singles are sometimes better than the a-sides and they were just all "B-what? We just download stuff and who cares?"

I'm really pleased. I didn't really let myself get spoiled prior to the release, I watched one song on YouTube maybe twice and that was it, so the whole thing, aside from "Seeds We Sow", was new to me. I really, really love "In Our Own Time" and "Rock Away Blind", those are the stand out tracks at the moment. But I'm excited by how much I love it on a first listen. It reaches right in and grabs and is rather moving at times, which I wasn't really expecting. I'm excited to spend more time with it!

True. But still, if they are bonuses on an mp3 album does it make much of a difference? I understand completely the nature of single a/b sides. I am a HUGE music connoisseur and I value them. But I think I'm trying to see it from the other perspective as well. I'm not saying these hipster kids are the basis of all modern-day music-buying knowledge, but I guess the time has come for me to sort of "get" that it's just not the same as it used to be.
In other words: the bonus stuff on LB's album doesn't really bother me. I don't mind getting any new LB songs, in any form I must attain them through.

I guess some artists still release singles with b-sides. That's what TrueFaith is wishing LB did with the bonuses, and I agree that it is a very artistic and extremely edgy (hey, for this day and age anyone who wants to release a single with an A-side or B-side is definitely going against the grain). But I am just happy to have these songs in my possession so quickly and have pretty much resolved myself to the fact that a/b sides are an antiquity that doesn't serve as much of a purpose as it once did. :sorry: Just my opinion.

After first listen Im only liking about half of it, but I am more of a Big Machine fan lol. I like his more straight forward manly voice he uses with FM so the vocals are a little distracting. I don't care for all the big love style finger picking either so was a little dissapointed to hear so much of it here. Good news is the songs that are good are really good: faves are -

It really turns me off when people give in to the urge to turn their enthusiasm for their favourite into an opportunity to put down other people's favourite. Why do this? I mean, I can be happy for all the Lindsey love on this thread. I can be happy for it because I know how much I dig Stevie, which means I know what excitement and pride feels like, regardless of its object. :D
For what it's worth (sorry), it's the more moderate opinions on SWS that I've read here that will make me buy it and give LB's solo stuff a chance where I haven't been much inclined to since Go Insane (which I pretty much loathed). And if I haven't passed into actual spirit from the rapture, I'll come back and tell you what I think (for which, I know, you will hardly be able to contain yourselves, ahem).

But I am interested in how a-sides/b-sides make meaning. Bonus tracks are extemporaneous and, consequently, stand-alone (except Jay-Z/Kanye kraftily position their bonus tracks on Watch the Throne (aka best album of the year) as a cohesive coda in and of itself--genius!!!!).

About half way through my first listen, I just thought "what a piece of **** album" & was at least looking forward to "She Smiled Sweetly", but once it got here, nope, he even screwed the pooch on that one, too. The original version from the unofficial Gift Of Screws is infinitely better than this travesty.
This whole album sounds like he just rewrote the worst songs from Under The Skin & the official Gift Of Screws.
Finally, only the electric "Seeds We Sow" had the ever so miniscule molecules of "redeeming value".
I wonder if he has one of those sets of words that are refrigerator magnets that he just wakes up, pours his morning coffee and lets it get cold as he gets sidetracked from opening the fridge door to get the Coffee Mate creamer and arranges them into banal lyrical content.
I don't know whether to be angry or just bored at the repetitious lyrical & sonic tripe that he's dumped upon us once again.
Seeds We Sow...we'll be referring to as SWS...which in my head stands for Some Wasteful ****.

I agree with (or UNDERSTAND) aspects of much of it. But I think the album is pretty. And moving. It's pretty moving.
SWS (electric) is easily one of my three (four? five?) fave tracks from these sessions. Not putting it on the album signifies a glaring lapse in judgement...

I can see where you can criticize this album, but Lindsey is not Bob Dylan and for 61 years old this where this man is at his life. How many people in their 60s can be making music like this? Me more than anyone wants Lindsey to put away the nylon for an album and the electric solos and have him bang on a piano and make epic 10 minute songs, but that's not going to happen. I like this album, despite hating One Take and Illumination, it's solid.

The guy is in a rut the size of the Grand Canyon. In retrospect, the worst thing he did was come up with that solo guitar/voice version of "Big Love". Everything he's done since then was just remakes of that. He DID hit on a couple of things that were taking that idea to the next level ("Try For The Sun" & "Red Rover"), but all he's doing on this album is regurgitating Under The Skin type over processed vocals making the lyrical content unintelligable (which annoyed the fk outta me then and just pisses me off here) over the same type guitar patterns. He's not growing as a songwriter, a guitarist, a vocalist, lyricist or even producer (his production chops are atrophying faster than a corpse's muscle tone). What he needs is one of Jethro Gibbs' patented head-slaps. It's that "how can a millionaire sing the blues authentically?" thing. Ok. But I'm asking a physical question really. Where is the b-side placed? In the old days, it would just be on the back of a 45. Now, that music is digital where does a b-side show up? Is it on the main CD and it's just labeled a "b-side" or what? Or is it on a second , separate CD called "the b-sides"? I do remember that Prince had a b-sides CD. I just didn't realize it was common. Michele

Lindsey's still going for the "quirky angry" schtick...comes off as really forced & phony. It's time for him to find a new direction.
I am loving this album, but I can see where you are coming from. This was my first Lindsey solo purchase; hadn't heard much of his earlier stuff. Now I am going back on Spotify and listening to the older albums, and I can see how, if I'd listened to him all along, I might find this more of the same and be disappointed. For a first-timer like me, it's great, sounding a little outdated (or should we say "retro?") in some ways, but quite beautiful.

I've listened to ALL of Lindsey's stuff and still find this album beautiful. And I don't much care if anyone else doesn't. I don't genuflect over Law and Order or Go Insane. I find them rather ridiculous, actually, if anyone gives a rat's behind over what I think (and they shouldn't). So, I don't let his early work influence my love of absolutely everything he's done on OOTC and after.
Beauty is in the eye (and ear and heart and spleen) of the beholder. Don't try and convince yourself to dislike something you love.

I don't find repetitiveness to be one of Lindsey's faults, especially not album to album. Now sameness within an album (UTS) has become an issue for me over time. But
And I say that as a non-musician who doesn't readily notce chord patterns, as long as the song sounds different to my ear. I'm sure it's different for someone who plays.
At any rate, while there are some artists that I love, I feel if you've heard one of their albums you've heard them all (Chris Isaak), but I don't feel that way about Lindsey. Having a history of his solo work does not diminish SWS in any way for me. While I compare my admiration for this album to others he's made, it's not really because it reminds me of them. It's more because it makes me feel as good.

Uck. That reminds me of the likes of Joshua Radin and The Editors. Joshua Radin's songs sound EXACTLY the same. And when I saw The Editors live (they supported R.E.M. years ago) I swear I thought they played the same song for their hour long set. A grim time was had by Bee. Lindsey may be guilty of a lot of things, but creating a deluge of dull music isn't one of those things, to me.

Michele
They're called b-sides in the same way cds and mp3s are still called "albums" and "records". However, yes, they now appear on the same disc or in the same download as the main single. Some discs do refer to something as a double A-side (e.g., a single Morrissey released off his live album on CD with 2 A-sides and 1 b-side).
Seeds We Sow - single
A1. Seeds We Sow (acoustic)
A2. Seeds We Sow (electric)
In Our Own Time - single

2. Sleeping Around the Corner
When She Comes Down - single
1. When She Comes Down (radio edit)
2. When She Comes Down (album)
3. End of Time (acoustic)

Heard the album twice now. I think it's a bit hit and miss which is a shame.
I could have done with a bit more precise production. I like a couple of tracks and I think they will really grow on me.
The only track I think should not have been included is One Take. I dont like the song at all.
Overall it's an "OK" album, nothing great I'm sad to say.
However - I do want tickets to the London show!

About half way through my first listen, I just thought "what a piece of **** album" & was at least looking forward to "She Smiled Sweetly", but once it got here, nope, he even screwed the pooch on that one, too. I'm enjoying this album a lot, but many of the songs just aren't that great imo. I got it yesterday with a friend, and he thought it was the worst he's ever heard Lindsey. But maybe it's because I didn't care for UTS and this album reminds me of it. When She Comes Down, One Take, Rock Away Blind, and End of Time are my favorites currently. Illumination and In Our Own Time are horrible to me, maybe I just don't "get" them?
The more I listen to it, the more beautiful it becomes. It's so shimmery and sublime. There are so many poignant lyrical moments that really jump out at me, since I haven't ever considered him to be the strongest lyricist. But nearly each song has a line or verse that I can't get out of my head. I think I agree that GTF is the most OOTC sounding tune on here. "End Of Time" is just gorgeous. Sort of epic, like IOOT. I'm loving it more and more with each new play...honestly can't wait to hear these live. Consider me a SWS stan. It's like biting on the heels of OOTC for me, not gonna lie. Thank you forever LB!!!

I think it's all a matter of preference. I don't want to be so self-righteous to presume you can't "get" him if you don't dig some songs. Personally IOOT is stunning to me, but that's the beauty of opinions. :)

Yeah. We all have our favourites, and not so favourite. I'm sure there are plenty of his fans out there who are completely turned off by OoTC. I mean, I adore R.E.M., but a couple of their albums are absolute dreck to me. But I still adore them. Because their good far outweighs any of their bad.
Still adore SwS though, by the way :p I think Stars Are Crazy is my favourite song today. And to think when I first heard it I just didn't like it. Now I think it's absolutely stunning.

I would say that it was around SYW that Lindsey first had entire songs where the lyrics jumped out at me, but he's always had sensational passages for me. Phrases that I found immortal. Like fate takes time, but even something as pedestrian as "I guess I need to be amazed," because it just captures those moments where I'm not disappointed. I'm not indifferent, but I'm still not satisfied and can't quite explain why. He has a way of throwing out words that might be about one thing or relationship, but somehow apply to life. And it may not be for a whole song, or even a whole verse, but he'll do it in a line that I can't shake.
Now, what I've noticed, comparing reactions in the last days is that the song that completely swept me away is forgettable to everyone else. I don't think any of the critical reviews even noticed Gone Too Far was there, yet I was taken aback by its beauty and pain. It's nice to see what's a consensus, but extremely interesting to learn what sounds "universal" to your ears, but which is actually just striking you in a very singular way. It's like hearing a dog whistle very clearly and looking around the room and realizing that no one else did.

Michele, I admit that I too overlooked GTF at first. But now listening to it, it is such an outstanding piece of work. What stands out to me is LB's voice- the yearning in his voice during the chorus. It's gorgeous. And the words are so touching.
This verse is amazing:
When your waiting for your ocean to rise
All alone at night long after I've gone
And your conversations all end in lies
And you wake up singing one of my songs

yes, i find myself loving it more and more with each listen... love his pronunciation while singing verses of this one (kinda like i loved the way he sang verses on the GOS version of She smiled sweetly). and i love how his voice cracks on "far" in the chorus.
but i still think it's very OOTC-ish and not something completely different or unexpected. IOOT however, with all the different things going on it in parallel, and with that weird guitar in the chorus sounding like firefighters are coming... that's different, quirky, showoff-y, but still with the great hook (or two - in parallel!).
I think Stars Are Crazy is my favourite song today. And to think when I first heard it I just didn't like it. Now I think it's absolutely stunning.
That song is growing on me! I actually probably liked it the least, along with "One Take," but now I am loving them both. SAC is kind of gorgeous, eh? I love the way he sings that first line...ugh, so pretty.

i still like it the least and keep skipping it (i've been scolded by a friend that i'm not giving it a chance ).
i loved One Take from the first time i heard the whole song (didn't like it much after hearing just chorus on previews). once i heard the whole song i thought everything in it hangs together perfectly, including the guitar shred - and that ending is perfect too - that llast line of the song comes down like a hammer (:wavey: truefaith). meanwhile i'm not liking it as much as initially, the novelty has worn off a bit i think, so now i'm back to appreciating songs i loved before hearing the whole CD.
and i love love love that guitar solo in electric SWS - i love lindsey's melodic but a bit screaming electric solos in general - this one, LiB version of Eyes of the world outro, RPTF solo toward the end... i could listen to these on loop.

yes, it's definitely interesting reading all these reactions, and everybody seems to pick a completely different song that they love the most or the least. it speaks about the diversity of this album - you have something for everybody's taste it seems, all different types of music LB is good at making - you can choose from rockers, fingerpicking gems, 80s or or 90s-lindsey-sounding songs and then you got some of his typical vocal-layering tracks... stuff we know him by but a little different... he was right when he said that this album represents all different things he's been doing - and they are all nicely hanging together.
reading through today's reviews in this thread i'm also surprised at the impression of some (as a complaint that was expanded to the whole album:shocked:) that this album is full of Big Love/UTS/TWT style songs - i can count exactly 3 songs (out of 11 - or out of 14 if you want to count extras) that are in that distinctive LB/TWT style of the last decade - SAC, SWS, and RAB. so this type of songs must just jump out and overwhelm some people more than others?

Day two with the album and "Rock Away Blind" is my favorite song on the album. I just love this style of song, I always do. The guitar makes me feel like I'm floating, surrounded by poofy things. I've listened to it many times already and I'm still surprised by it, there are some very specific choices that are very beautiful and moving. I don't know if I'm interpreting the lyrics correctly, but I kind of see this song as a followup to "Underground". It doesn't matter what people say or think of what he does, he's just going to keep doing what feels right and good. Definitely my favorite song on the album at the moment.

Before I say this, I'll point out that I'm not a huge fan of LB's solo work.
Well I've listened to most of the tracks on the album, and I have to say that this album is better than the last two.
I do find with LB's solo stuff that a lot of it sounds the same. I know that the die-hard fans will disagree though.
I'm always disappointed in his solo works, especially because of some of the great stuff he did with FM. I wish he would work with more session musicians, vary up his vocals a bit and not stretch out every second woooorrrrrddddd....
I don't know maybe I'm getting too critical. I've not been excited two of the three releases by FM members (current and past) this year.

Totally Underground. It MIGHT be better but I love the little guitar thingy he does in Underground that he repeats from Love Minus Zero/No Limits. So it's a tie for now. When She Comes Down sounds like Treason, but better.

This is what I said after hearing just the clips of the songs last week,
"I'm sitting here ... On the first "listen to" from those clips... Oh dear, hear it goes....
I hear nothing from the OOTC sound...
I hear lots of UTS... With percussion, some what...
Love love love UTS! So don't get me wrong... I've spent thousands of dollars to see him....and I've trapped people in my car.. And many other instances... and force them to listen to "my Lindsey mix"... Really you have no idea how my friends dread when I'm in a "Lindsey Mode".. Ok, maybe you do
But, I'm finding Lindsey NOT doing his "thing" with his music that he, himself, gave us Tusk -- which, to this day, every time I listen to it, I hear something new....
And It seems that when Lindsey got wind that we loved how he played "the what he plays", he went hog wild on it - hence the intensive hand shanking right before he plays Big Love - and went with the "machine" of the style.. And he's "stuck in a rut in his hut" . Yes, his lyrics are more fabulous... Yes, I love love love his guitar playin'..... Speaks to my soul.... But I'm kinda feeling deflated that he's giving us "the machine" of what we love... Maybe, that's just where he's at....
For whatever the reason...
In the end... I'll go on the ride... Cuz, it's always worth it"
Now that I have the actual CD and listening to it on surround and sober....
I still think the same thing... BUT...
This is definitely an album that I'll be listening to a lot. Gone to Far is my fav so far - reminds me a little of Tango in the Night. The album is just gorgeous.
But I'm not going to beat LB up for sounding like himself - his sound is why I like him....
sort of reminds of that story when John Foggerty and CCR had their court battles and CCR accused John's new solo stuff sounded too much like CCR...

Yeah sometimes artist just can't win if they're adventerous like Lindsey was on Tusk, they get lambasted for not soudling like they were expected to sound like. On the other hand I remember a radio show on AM radio where the DJ played new singles and callers would rate them .He played Gypsy when it was new and quipped "It sounds too Fleetwood Macish"SWS does not displace OOTC for me but it is a fine album with some beautiful moments and even that is a rarity in this day and age.

Ummm...the title of the thread is "First Impressions". You want that kind of "in-depth response", it ain't comin' from just a "first impression".
That assumes that I WANT to get that deep into these songs and also pretty much demands frequent & multiple listens to the SWS album (as well as the back catalogue material, too). Which after my first impression, I'm not really inclined to play it again for quite some time. (That said, it will most likely be played more often than Stevie's Other Side Of The Mirror album. It took a bit for the official version of Gift Of Screws to grow on me, but at least IT had some songs that I liked on the first listen, SWS didn't)

I think it's great. Pretty mellow and every original song is catchy and radio friendly. But I do miss rockers like that were on Gift of Screws. The production is a bit different than previous works. Very cleaned up. A song like The Way Love Goes could really rock during the chorus, but it seems as if it's toned down a bit and the guitars are kinda quiet. I like the up tempo stuff like Illumination (could have been a bit longer) and One Take. Don't get me wrong, I love the album and it's all I listen to right now, but nothing is perfect. I do have an issue with the sequencing. I agree with Lindsey that it's very important. When I make a compilation or playlist I make sure the ending of one song works well with the start of another. But he didn't do this one I'm assuming by the liner notes. Anyways, great album... overall it's his second best behind Out of the Cradle.

Actually, in places of almost EVERY song something sounded like something else...but, I just couldn't place it right away.
I DO remember these song titles popping in my head as I was listening:

You Do Or You Don't

Let's see if I can work it out. I'm not sure I agree but I want to play.
This Is The Time - One Take
You Do Or You Don't - Gone Too Far (actually I really hear this)
Bel Air Rain - erm... Rock Away Blind? Maybe not, other than they're both fingerpickin' goodness. :p
Red Rover - Stars Are Crazy
Under The Skin - ?
Castaway Dreams - ?
Show You How - ?
Down On Rodeo - ?
I don't know about the last ones. What I will say is that WSCD does have elements of the acoustic version of Trouble. And of Underground.
I actually really like the songwriting on this album. My only real gripe with the production. I actually think most of the problems came in at the mastering stage because it's so loud on the chorus of WSCD that it distorts in the right channel. :(

When The Way Love Goes starts, I almost want to sing, "Id like to teach the world to sing (in perfect harmony . . .)" instead of "I'd like to take your pain away." It's something about the chanty rhythm of Lindsey's song's open that brings that other to mind.

Something remarkable just happened....after listening to this album on and off for a couple days......and getting over the fanboy stuff. I was just listening to this album, and around Stars are Crazy, I said.....I've had it. off the record went. I realize with each listen, I'm slowly cooling to it. Maybe I'll try again in a few days. We'll see. I was just shocked that that happened:shrug::lol:

Well, actually this sounds normal and healthy. It's not good to overdo a great thing, imo. If it was up to me I'd probably play it non-stop but now I'm forcing myself to listen to other stuff.(Like Lucinda Williams latest that I have had since it came out and haven't even touched...smh)

I had to take a break as well after about 20 complete listenings (I drive in the car a lot). I listened to OOTC. Still number 1 for me. SWS is number 2. It has about five stand out tracks.

Ok I've listened to this album about 4 times and GOS is overall WAY better. There 3 or 4 great songs here, but the rest ranges from barely mediocre to crap.I really hope the new songs he plays aren't exactly the same as the sogns from the small machine show.
1. Seeds We Sow- THis has grown on me. Its a nice littel song.
2. In Our Own Time- I love the guitar sounds he gets here.
3. Illumination- WOW!!! I love this. This could've been on Go Insane if Go Insane had good songs on it. Lindsey was always the one in Fleetwood Mac who had the 2 minute songs. This decade hes been averaging more 4 minutes a song. He should get back to the 2 minute songs that get right to the point. It works for him
4. The Way Love Goes- Initially I really didn't like this one. The repeating of the words was annoying. But its seriously grown on me. Very catchy.
5. Stars are Crazy- This sucks. I see its many peoples favorite so I won't go on much longer about how bad I think it is. I really hope he doesn't keep this song in his sets.
6. When She Comes Down-This sounds like All My Sorrows. OK song
7. Rock Away Blind- One of the better songs on the album. In no way is this his best of "these" songs that started back with Big Love and made its studio debut with Red Rover. Bel Air Rain was his perfecting of that style. This is no where near Bel Air Rain.
8. One Take- My favorite along with Illumination. I sing that chorus in my head all day long. I'm baffled that some dislike this only for the last line. He btter do this osng live.
9. Gone Too Far- It's OK. I've never heard such a blatant musical rip off as I do hear with You Do Or You Don't but thats fine.
10. End of Time- Awful.
11. She Smiled Sweetly- Eh

hmmm, i actually agree with you on most of the songs, but i'm curious why you don't want him to do Saban songs when you love 4 out of 6 he did there? i do agree he should add One Take in the set, plus Rock Away Blind, and i wouldn't mind hearing either Gone Too Far or even better You Do Or You Don't. i would also love to hear She Smiled Sweetly live, actually.
although i love GoS, and i think it was my favorite of his CDs before this one came out, i disagree that GoS (official version) is way better. SWS hangs together much better than GoS, imo. i don't skip any songs (well other than Stars are crazy) here. it flows just right for me.
and, i don't think End of Time is awful - i think the words are great and introspective - pretty normal and evolving for someone his age actually - not trying to sound chipper and young when he's not. but the poppy melody and arrangement are not exactly my cup of tea, although more FM- than LB-oriented fans seem to like exactly that. plus, when i first heard it, maybe also b/c of end-of-time wording, it reminded me of REM a lot.

I just said I didn't want him to do those same 6. Which I guess in hindsight I could just say I want him to ditch Stars and End of Time for One Take and Rock Away Blind. And I only love Illumination and In Our Own Time. I like Rock Away Blind and Seeds We Sow I called "nice:

so actually, hate to say it but i have to agree again!:p - would love it if he ditches Stars and EOT, but he won't. look at some other people's reviews, guess he needs to give everybody something, not just to you and me:laugh:. although i disagree, there are plenty of people who think SAC and EOT are the best on the CD - different people different tastes.

I wanted to let the album sink in a little bit before I have my actual review. Overall, I do like the album, but I was much more hooked on Gift of Screws when it came out. I was in love with some of those tracks. I can't say the same for SWS. However, there are some tracks that I do love on this album.
Seeds we Sow - This one is growing on me. I love the "aaahhhh Seeds we Sow" part. I have yet to hear the electric version besides the Amazon preview. Not too excited for this one in concert. Its no 'Shut us Down' or anything (which should close his set, not open it).
In Our Own Time - Quirky is the only word that seems to fit this song. This is definitely a song that is suited much better for the stage. Why does his guitar playing at the end sound so strange? It doesn't sound like he is playing, sounds like a computer is playing those closing strings. Anyway, this to me is like a much tamer 'Red Rover.' It will be fun to hear this live, but there are other tracks on the album I would rather hear live before this one.
Illumination - Now this song is pretty cool. Someone on here described this song as sort of a psychedellic 60's song when we first heard the clip back in April, I totally agree. This would have been a perfect FM song. I am very excited to see/hear this one live.
That's the Way Love Goes - After listening to the live version for 5 months, I was expecting something much more grand. I probably played the live version 100+ times since April. Again, his studio version is 'quirky.' The guitar solos are pretty great as well. I hope he keeps this one in the set, it really works live.
Stars Are Crazy - Not too 'crazy' about this one. Hope he drops it for the tour.
When She Comes Down - I am liking this one with each listen. Probably won't listen to it much after the album hype calms down.
Rock Away Blind - This is my FAVORITE track on the album. For me, it out does Big Love, Try for the Sun, and Bel Air Rain. This track is the ultimate and epic finger-picking goodness I was waiting for. What a BEAUTIFUL song. Strangely, this song makes me think of death. The whole bit about being on time for someone's love, their 'open shrine', spending hours of time with them, and rocking away blindly after the fact. This is, of course, my own interpretation. I will be requesting this one live!!
One Take - Ehhhh. Its like a Say You Will/OOTC hybrid song. Reminds me of 'Wrong' but sounds like something that would have gone on SYW. Can't get into this one.
Gone Too Far - You Either Do or You Don't...but this version is worse.
End of Time - Better live. Haven't heard the acoustic version yet.
She Smiled Sweetly - My 18 year old self loves that this is on the album. I remember listening to this song when I started college. I was a little bit homesick and just downloaded the GOS demos. I listened to this song all the time. I am truly happy that this cover made it on to one of his albums. I will say, though, I do miss the higher harmony part on the chorus and the violin/synth parts.
Overall, this is a good album. I would have been VERY pleased if this one came after Under the Skin. Anything would have delighted me after the sadness that UTS brought me. Anyway, here's my rank:
Out of the Cradle
Gift of Screws
Seeds We Sow
Go Insane
Under the Skin
Law and Order
on Friday, late in the mail from Best Buy. (I just ordered it last Sunday.) I've only listened to the first four songs so far. I will say that the only song that stood out for me so far was That's the Way That Love Goes. So while I can't comment on the whole CD yet, I can comment on the pics on the CD jacket itself. I don't like the blurry pics of Linds. He has a little too much blush for me on the front cover, but the other pics are alright though a smile would have been nice in at least one pic. And he does look hot in black. :D

I must have listened to One Take about 20 times now. It is SOOOOO f**king great.
I hate to do this, but I can't help but compare this with IYD but listening to their new respective albums is like night and day. I never listened to a song twice in a row with IYD. The whole danmed thing was just such a danmed great cohesive unit. I would listen from beginning to end listening to each song once. Thats still what I do 5 months later. But SWS is so very hot and cold that I'm able to listen to One Take, In Our Own Time and Illumination over and over and over again. So it's kind of misleading. "In My Mind" if you will its like i must love lindseys new album because i'm listening to it so much, but in reality i'm not if I can't listen to more then those 3 songs.

take out great day, love runs deeper (never understood all the love for that one:confused:), and bel air rain, and we'll almost be in agreement about the nicely rocking album you've put together! and add in live version of that's the way love goes. if i'd really listen to it though, i'd probably need a few more songs that can calm the whole thing down, besides just underground (and rock away blind to some extent).

Yea.......bad news....This album has REALLY slid down opinion wise for me, at least. It just does not do well on repeated listening's for me. I'm bored with the record already. Feel like he's just rehashing old ideas. I attribute my initial reaction to just having a new album. With each listen more disappointment seeps in. So this may become a shelf album. :distress:

Me, too. Today's selection is the line "touched me soft and slow" from Seeds We Sow. SwS has been in my bottom two of this album (but, just bottom two of an entire album I really love, not "ick! bottom 2!") but, I gotta say, it's been growing on me once I've totally ignored the Ah...tatatas.
Yesterday, I listened twice to the entire album. And I can't wait to hear all this stuff live.

When I was in an earlier, near foaming-at-the-mouth FM rabid fan stage, I once listened to a demo tape (I think from Tango) where lyrics...just didn't seem to exist for some of Lindsey's stuff and he "sang" things by mumbling nonsense words.
Of course, I listened to the LONG disco-ish versions of Empire state and something else. Oh, Family Man.
I'm glad I got over that part of being a fan;-) ALMOST as bad as listening to the 24-minute version of Stevie's Nightmare demo.

Lindsey's still going for the "quirky angry" schtick...comes off as really forced & phony. It's time for him to find a new direction.
I have read most of the posts here and have to agree somewhat with this post. i do think the finger picking sound on every song is tiring and repetitive. I am surprised more people aren't agreeing.

Are you, really? Why should we agree if that's not how we feel?
You agree, that's cool. Lindsey has been doing his fingerpicking style for ages and that's part of why I like him. I'm suddenly going to stop because of someone else's opinion?
Hardly.

You know, when I listened to the album I almost wished he'd do more of the fingerpicking songs. Maybe decide to just do fingerpicking and find new ways of making that work with a track.
Either that or another synth pop album :p

You are absolutely right. And it's good to be honest so don't feel bad at all.
I will say this about SWS: it could be his most accessible solo album, and I'm not sure if others agree or how you all feel about that. I took the CD with me on a roadtrip with my two girlfriends, who aren't really Lindsey fans and sometimes call his music "strange." I did get one of them, 2 years ago, to admit Gift Of Screws had some great stuff, but she also said "Time Precious Time" was one of the worse songs she had ever heard. But anyway, I put on SWS and they were really digging TTWLG and EOT and kind of the whole thing. They both think it's the best stuff they have ever heard from him. And I have played OOTC for them both in the past so...
That's interesting. I think it's one of those albums that appears to be dividing people. I love it but I get that some people wanted something different. We can't love it all and he can't please everyone...jmo. :)

He sang a lot of nonsense words for the GOS demos too, but that just drew me to them and wanted him to complete it all the more. In the unfinished stuff, even where there were words, I think they were just placeholders, based on earlier songs of his.
It was funny to me how his inchoate sounds still translated into raw emotion. Like with Steve's Riff and Given Thing, I still felt a whole story in my head. Little moans sounded like desperation or hurt, just in the way that they paired with the music. Deep dense . . . how can you just grunt things and have them matter? But they did. The "kind of like a marriage" words were trite on paper, but his playing made them say something more complicated.
