View Full Version : POLL: Best Dave Stewart Collaboration from In Your Dreams
TrueFaith77

Since there aren't enough poll options for all the songs, I plan on doing a battle between the winner of best Dave Stewart collab against the winner of best song sans Stewart.
Should be an interesting way, as well, to put the songs into perspective and to inspire discussion (e.g., I noted how the last 5 songs of the album are 5 of the 7 Stewart collabs).
What's your favorite of the 7?
ETA: I chose "Everybody Loves You" ... I think it's so moving and I love the keyboard and strings.

Yeah the keyboards are amazing. I choose Italian Summer though Wide Sargasso Sea was a close second.

I'll go with Wide Saragasso Sea for sure. Stevie sings a great story here. I haven't seen the movie yet but from the lyrics on this song I can see a lot of passion, pain, and anger going on here. I think it's a great song lyrically as well as musically.

I went with "Everybody Loves You".....I love most of the rest of these songs, especially "Italian Summer" and "Wide Sargasso Sea", but "Everybody Loves You" is so catchy, I love it.

I'm torn between ELY, WSS, IYD & YMBTO, but gave the nod to YOU MAY BE THE ONE.
This song gives the album some added diversity - some soul, some blues & country with what may be the best vocals (Stevie & Lori and Sharona)on the record. Plus the prickly yet poignant lyrics round out the best of Stevie's angry love to hate you songs:nod:. The structure of this song reminds me of classic Eagles songwriting. It's got a great hook, and is beautifully written and sung throughout. Its perfection, and if Warners & Stevie had a clue they should strongly consider this for 2 or 3rd single. Stevie should be singing YMBTO or IYD for TV performances to grab new listeners imho.

I think its pretty even for me. My top 4 contains 2 Stewart and 2 Non Stewart GAG, SA, Moonlight and IYD. And then at the very bottom are 2 Stewart songs CTF and Everybody Loves You.

I love this record...from beginning to end! I really did not care for Wide Sargasso Sea at all when I first heard it but it's grown on me tremendously! But Italian Summer, for me, is pure magic! The lyrics, the vocal, those strings...I honestly never thought Stevie would ever record a song that's so utterly dynamic and beautiful. It just soars...

I mean, I'll still listen, but it does kind of bother me because it sounds very unnatural and out of place.
Also, I just generally don't like the chorus and that isn't helped by Dave's vocals and Stevie's accent. So I'm not as big a fan of this song as I wish I were, despite LOVING the verses and being absolutely obsessed with the bridge.

Not surprisingly, I can't really get into Italian Summer either. I lump it in with other torchy Stevie songs which I'm not a fan of: Beauty And The Beast, Has Anyone Ever Written, etc. Torchy ballad Stevie just isn't my fav Stevie. Italian Summer is a pretty song, don't get me wrong, it's just not my thing. :)

My opinions, exactly. Except you can throw in Wide Sargasso Sea with them - from day one I haven't been able to get into this song, and I wonder what I'm missing since most people say it's one of their favorites! I'm still listening to the album all the way through a lot, but when I do just pick random songs to listen to - it's guaranteed not to be one of those three.

Voted for Wide Sargasso Sea ..this was an easier pick than the Stevie only thread,WSS is one of those songs that really only works if Stevie Nicks performs it and she sings the hell out of it.That is true of alot of her songs though which is why it is no easy task to cover her.

I was a little worried about Wild Sargasso Sea too, but I finally listened to it in my husband's car (excellent stereo) and it won me over. Actually, it was the ending that really won me over.

Actually, I was playing IYD, probably from the Rolling Stone webpage, and my roommate asked me about "Wide Sargasso Sea". He recognized the singer, but not the song and it definitely had that "I really like this song" vibe to it.
My fave Stevie/Dave co-composition is "Everybody Loves You" - it's a superb song in every sense and is very reminiscent of latter-day Eurythmics (could have easily been on the "We Too Are One" album). I actually adore Dave in the chorus and also Stevie's (correct) pronunciation of "can't"!
I'm also particularly keen on "You May Be The One", but then I'm loving just about everything on the album after many listens.
The four songs I was cautious of in the beginning were "The Ghosts Are Gone"; "In Your Dreams"; "Wide Sargasso Sea" and "Soldier's Angel". I now really dig "Ghosts" and "In Your Dreams", although ideally, I would slightly change the instrumentation in both. I absolutely detested "Wide Sargasso Sea" upon first listen, but now am really getting into it. I also was won over by the ending and slowly but surely, the rest of the song has taken hold. I'm still not keen on the lyrics for the most part, but I'm getting beyond that enough to enjoy what is a pretty dynamic song. I read a review of of the album the other day that described this song as "English rock" and that charmed me even further.
As for "Soldier's Angel", I love the sound of it and Lindsey's contribution is sublime, but the god-awful lyrics simply make me cringe. Just about her very worst "poetry" in my opinion. Jesus Stevie, what were you thinking?

it's funny that so many have done 180's on Everybody Loves You, saying its drasticaly different then the clip we heard a year ago, but really that clip didn't really change at all. It just sounds way better surrounded by the other parts of the song. But that chorus is really identical other then Stevie changing how she says Can't.

I thought the clip was horrendous. Upon hearing the entire song, I think it's great, though. Yes, the chorus is rather pedestrian and dull... but the verses and intro are beautiful. It's truly one of my fav songs on the album. I never thought I'd say that judging by the clip!

I'll have to abstain on this poll...I can't choose. Like I said in the other thread, I consider this album to be one complete body of work.
Well, THAT said, the one track that does get the ol' feet a tappin' and me doing crazy air guitar moves that would embarrass the hell out of me if anyone saw me doing them (when I'm not on stage actually PLAYING my guitar, that is )...
"Ghosts Are Gone" ok, so maybe I'll toss that one a vote on the poll. But, wait...that just negates my feelings about "Wide Sargasso Sea", "Italian Summer", & the title track, too. UGH!!
See? This is why "the album format is dying". People are so "track" oriented instead of taking in the entire album's statement. DAMN!! Now I'm getting pissed off and grumpy again...

I hope that this poll is not symptomatic of this problem--especially as its another way of generating thoughts on, as you point out, an album that is truly exemplary of the "album format"... :)

I just hope Waddy feels the same way about Ghosts Are Gone. If he does, maybe we'll get it live. We know Stevie wants a rocker in her setlist. I always respected her sticking with FFG, but I didn't particularly like it. Ghosts Are Gone would be a replacement I could wholeheartedly support. Michele

Yes indeed. She should take a page from Pink Floyd (well, when Roger Waters was still in the band, that is)...come out & play your ENTIRE latest album, take a break, then "set 2", play a few "hits" & "deep album tracks".
It's pretty much what Fleetwood Mac did with Rumours by the middle of the summer of '77. I don't care WHAT Fleetwood & Nicks say about "playing new songs", I was in the friggin' audience, I saw & heard the reactions from those new songs live...there wasn't the "boredom" that THEY say happened, the audience was ROCKIN' the new tunes...why the hell do you think Rumours sold so well? Yep, almost the entire album's songs translated well to the stage. Why have subsequent album's bombed? They don't play enough of the songs in concert to incite the audience to run to buy the album.
Stevie girl...ooooh, weeee, LISTEN TO ME...play the whole damned album, take a break, then come back a play a few "hits" (rotating them from show to show)...sell 85% of your tickets for $25, play 10 nights in one town before moving on to the next. (is this starting to sound like Prince's latest concert series? I thought so.) You'll be the talk of the town, the "latest buzz", the "comeback kid".

And I actually link the word "righteous" here with "righteous" on Soldier's Angel, as I think calumny, blame and irony color both utterances.

...and the use of the word "righteous" on "New Orleans"... "where the good and righteous walk, and the wicked as well"... this describes a SPIRITUAL place, not just literal New Orleans.
