Stevie Nicks Cancels Performance and Celebration of First CD in a Decade

Rock's Reigning Queen Suffering From Pneumonia

NEW YORK, May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Stevie Nicks, whose highly anticipated new CD "In Your Dreams" - scheduled to be released tomorrow May 3rd, has had to cancel several upcoming appearances in New York due to coming down with pneumonia and the flu. Her doctor informed her over the weekend that she needed to "stay in bed and not fly" until she gets better. Nicks was scheduled to perform at a star studded event thrown in her honor by her record label Reprise Records at NY's Webster Hall on May 4th and was also planning on appearing on the Today Show and Good Day NY on May 3rd.

"I want to apologize to all my fans and hope that we can reschedule and of course I hope you love the new album. It's for you," commented Nicks.

"The gypsy queen is in royal form on 'In Your Dreams' — it's not just her first album in 10 years, it's her finest collection of songs since the Eighties," commented Rolling Stone in its review of Nicks' new CD.

Oh noes. This blows for all of you going. I hope those that are en route already to NYC can still make something good of your trip. Hope all gets rescheduled anyway.

On another note, I had a sneaky feeling it was going to be taped. I think Dave wants to include live stage performances for his film. The Grand Ball Room would be good compliment to his already filmed studio shots. Just guessing though.

Poor Danielleaaarisen... she just text messaged me she'd gotten to La Guardia, and I had to tell her the bad news. She scraped together all of her pennies and flew all the way from Seattle just to go to the Webster Hall show!

Anyone else remember the SAME THING happening with Stevie around the release of TISL? She had to cancel many shows because of bronchitis, I believe it was.

i feel so bad for Danielleaaarisen. she seemed just so excited to be able to go to this show. how awful for her and for you all of you that bought tickets. i remember stevie being sick when she was touring for TISL. i found 2 - 4th row center tickets for the show in virginia one night on tm and figured since we would be in the area on vacation that we would go to the show. i remember coming back from the beach and my brother in-law said he heard on the radio that the show was canceled because stevie was sick. my heart sank and i was just sooo upset! thank goodness she got better and i was able to catch her in columbus later on in the tour but i wont ever forget that feeling.

I hate to say this but my feeling is that AC will be canceled too. For her to do that show may be too soon. They made that mistake during the TISL tour the first time she was sick. She got ill again and had to cancel more shows. She should just rest and do a CD re-launch at the end of the month.

Damn dude. First off, I hope Stevie gets better and takes the time she needs. This is not good for the week of her album...when she needs to be seen and heard. Worst timing ever!

BUT - all these folks flying around the country and shelling out money for the ticket and hotel and flight and everything. I feel so bad for them. Everyone. And even if it is rescheduled those people likely can't make the trip again.

What's the point of a CD Launch like a month later? Just officially cancel it so everyone can get refunds asap. Sad. This could have been momentous and historical.

Maybe my words are misinterpreted. I’m simply saying that maybe at the end of the month there can be a week where Stevie can make TV appearances. I know not everyone will be able to travel again. It sucks all around, for everyone and Stevie. Not sure what you mean officially cancel “it.” Cancel what exactly? The CD is coming out tomorrow, that can’t be canceled, if that is what you are referring to. I just fear that if Stevie tries to do a show this Friday in AC it may be too soon. She may not be fully recovered and she’ll just end up getting sick again.

I feel sooooo bad for all those who've already arrived in NYC & spent so much money to get there & make their hotel reservations. But, on the bright side, Stevie is VERY dedicated to her fans & when this show is rescheduled, I'm sure she will go out of her way to make it worth all the time, trouble & expense. You might even get some give-aways that you wouldn't have gotten otherwise. So, try to be optimistic, even tho I know you're probably crushed, pissed & worried about Stevie right now, it's hard to do, but I don't see her NOT rescheduling & making it up in a BIG way. ;)

Many of you know my mom has been ill. She is 75. She started having troubles in her early 60s. Small illnesses like the flu were not so small. Stevie needs to take really good care of herself, especially since she is in constant contact with sooo many people and sooo many germs. If she has Pneumonia that could be very life threatening, especially at her age.

My comments weren't really directed at yours or anything. I was just saying that if the venue would officially cancel the show, then people can get refunds sooner than later. Agree with everything else you said. And yes, it sucks for Stevie too. I hope she feels better soon.

See. I think Stevie lives in such a fantasy world that she's pretty disconnected from her fans in that way. She is dedicated and loves her fans, but I haven't seen evidence that she's one to really go over the top to make anything up to her fans.

I'm not so confident about a reschedule. I mean, the whole point of this thing was to have a big party, get notices in the music press and possibly even film footage. A month from now IYD will probably be well on its descent off the charts. The horse has almost left the barn and Stevie is not riding on it. :distress:

I didn't want to bring it up but that thought crossed my head. Bernie Mac died from complications from Pneumonia at age 50. I'm very sad first of all for those like Dani who flew from Seatle to NYC on borrowed money and even for thos like me just dying to hear what new songs she was gonna play and how they turned out, but the Stevie health issue trumps all of that. She better be taking every precaution and better not set foot on a stage or do one bit of CD promotion until she's 100 percent.

In fact we should tweet Dave to make sure he doesnt allow her to go back to work 1 second too soon.

Y'know, this CD is the biggest thing to happen to Stevie in a decade. She was absolutely stoked about it. Everything was going great. So if she cancels on the eve of the official launch, then that means she's really sick, and while I have sympathy for people who're losing time and money, I can't help thinking it's not the big picture. I'm seeing some pretty angry and selfish stuff going on over on Twitter right now, but all I can think of is that I want her to be OK.

Not necessarily. This could be a way for some more publicity down the road, esp. if Dave decides to film the event. I think Stevie should now do something extra for it - like perform the whole album instead of just 6 new songs.

In any event, I feel bad for everybody who spent the $ and made the trip. And I'm sure Stevie is feeling frustrated as hell. Bet she's glad Oprah had her on weeks ago.

That's what they said. I don't know if he really did (and if she really does) cuz media throws the term "flu" around pretty loosely. It's a bit late in the season to get it, but not impossible esp. if she's been traveling lately.

If she truly does have physician-diagnosed flu & pneumonia, then it's nothing to f*ck with & she really should not perform.

I feel sick for those of you who had tix, esp. those traveling to get there. :sorry:

Second...I am so incredibly bummed out. I just cancelled my hotel reservations for NYC.

The girl I spoke to at Liz's office was just as bummed as we all are about the show on Wednesday...it was going to be really special. :(

I bet you are in shock. It is SO sad. The thing is, if you are able to get your money back for your tickets, your flight and hotel and other expenses won't be refunded.

Try to have a good time - somehow - and then just go home when you were originally going home. May as well make use of the hotel/flight.

I completely understand how everybody's feeling and that their heart's in the right place. But I'd like to emphasize the "Guys - Stevie's sick!" angle of this. i.m.o. we should focus on the positive - at least she's not in the hospital. Maybe for somebody as physically fit and strong as her who's not 70 yet, it's not literally life-threatening - but it's starting to kinda-sorta-almost get into that kind of territory. i.m.o. if a doctor were asked flat-out by a family member, he or she would say something like, "Yes - I'm somewhat concerned."
Hopefully the shows will be re-scheduled.

Dani, I'm so sorry! For what it's worth, this happened to me in March when I went to Fort Lauderdale to catch opening night. I was momentarily bummed, but I kept repeating to myself that everything happens for a reason; there is no such thing as an accident. The fates brought you to NYC under whatever guise, so take it as a sign that it was just meant to be. Make it important. Go out there and experience it all. I think you will love it; I will never forget my first trip to NYC as a kid. You may learn something about yourself that you didn't know before.

I won't go into details, but my misguided trip to Fort Lauderdale was actually very good for me.

Well, first I hope Stevie gets better soon. Pneumonia really freaks me out. What awful timing. :( This week really was going to be historic for her. :(

Second...I am so incredibly bummed out. I just cancelled my hotel reservations for NYC.

I called her PR office and asked about The Borgata show...as of right now, it is tentatively still on...not going to cancel my train and AC hotel reservations yet. The girl I spoke to at Liz's office was just as bummed as we all are about the show on Wednesday...it was going to be really special. :(

So sad those of us that were going on Wednesday won't be able to celebrate the album release with Stevie...sending "get well wishes" Stevie's way!!!

Did you happen to ask her if the Webster Hall show was going to be rescheduled?

Good point. You know she was in NYC on 9/11 & Illume came outta that whole experience, but it did have a big impact on her & on the whole TISL tour for that matter. Right now all the airports are on tightened security & everyone seems to just be watching/waiting for something to happen. So, I could totally see her being cautious or not wanting to be around NYC right now, but at the same time, I think she's just sick. I don't think she'd miss out on the premiere of her new album for anything, especially with as long as it's been & how much she enjoyed making this new music. I think she really is sick & probably feels even worse that she's not able to be there. If there was any way she could make it, I think she'd be there with bells on...

This article says she's still on for Ellen May 10, so that's promising for the Indio and Vegas shows:

Stevie Nicks is on the eve of the release of her brand new album, “In Your Dreams,” and instead of making the rounds to promote her acclaimed new record, she’ll be battling the flu in bed.

The 62-year-old, who appeared on “Oprah” last month, was advised by her doctor to “stay in bed and not fly” as she’s currently suffering from pneuomonia and the flu.

She’s had to cancel appearances on the Today Show and Good Day NY, scheduled for the album’s release date on May 3rd, as well as an event hosted by her label Reprise Records on May 4th.

"I want to apologize to all my fans and hope that we can reschedule and of course I hope you love the new album. It's for you," Nicks said in a statement.

While we hope she gets better, critics are saying that musically, she’s in rare form. “It's not just her first album in 10 years, it's her finest collection of songs since the Eighties," said Rolling Stone.

Nicks is still scheduled for a performance on “Ellen” for May 10th, which has not yet been cancelled.

Some people keep saying that, but I think that is wayyyy too cynical. Tons of people have to be called. Lots of people have to put in time cancelling things. I'm sure she knows this. I'm sure she has been holding off cancelling anything. This CD is her baby and she is a pretty tough cookie. She is sick.

Wow this sucks, I hope she feels better soon and still can get some of the promoting done.
I hope they reschedule the Webster Hall thing, IYD is her first album in 10 years and it might be her last ever, she worked hard and deliverd an outstanding piece of work, the girl deserves a fabulous release party (even if it's a little later) with her friends and fans! But first she should take care of herself.

Did you call? Or are you going by their reservation policy? If you didn't call--and speak to a supervisor, if you have to--CALL now! You may be able to get all of your money back. Especially if it's a chain hotel of any kind (although, really, any hotel worth its salt should not hold you to a time limit if you are VERY close to it).

Give it a try! I know I had to cancel a reservation or two and it's worked.

Good luck.

Edit: They won't budge. I can only get my second night back. So far, at least $260 gone. I can't get my money back for the airfare, but at least they'll give it back to me in gift card form. This keeps getting worse.

Dani I thought of you and those coming from Florida before even myself ( Iwas flying from Rochester)...and I know how you feel cause you had to borrow money for this..so its not like you can just go to a theater show or any of that other stuff that costs a good penny!:( I've had this happen too in the past with Stevie where she cancelled the 9/12 show in Rochester NY( I remember her saying she was never going to New York again!) Also my family drove to the State Fair once in '89 to see Stevie and she cancelled right before we got there cause of what they said was a swollen bug bite on her foot( I think she actually broke it) but still, I had to walk around staring at cows and pigs all day...Neither of these two shows were to the same magnitude as flying from Cali but I do feel your pain..Hopefully Stevie will make it up somehow for us! I'm frustrated too..this REALLY stinks..but I sure hope she is okay and takes care of herself..Try to absorb the lights and maybe go to Ground zero and sing a line or 2 of Illume..in honor of those who died..This kinda is a historic time to be in NYC....;))))) Try to smile and enjoy..

Well, you are in the greatest city in the world. Try and make the most of it. I recommend a show . Try TKTS for easy on the wallet tickets. Also see the concierge at your hotel. I'm actually inclined to agree with Jondalar in this instance. Fleetwood Mac canceled the Dance show I had tickets for in '97. Stevie canceled the Trouble In Shangri La show I had tickets for in '01. Fleetwood Mac canceled whole blocks of shows on the Unleashed tour. The opening night for Rod & Stevie's tour this summer was canceled. For those of us with tighter budget strings, it's just too much of a risk to plan a trip around Stevie/Fleetwood Mac.

That being said, I wouldn't shed any tears about not seeing Stevie if I'd flown to NYC. It's not like anyone could ever get bored visiting there! :D

Yep - this is what people forget. I'll be pleased for those who can make a resheduled date but I'd be in the same boat as you. People often assume that everything is fine if the dates are rescheduled but there will be less people at a rescheduled date for this reason. It's unavoidable but very upsetting.

She was a heavy smoker for decades and she's over 60,
therefore she has pneumonia. The two go together
automatically. *every* time.

I don't want to seeem unsympathetic to those who have been
disappointed; I'm not, at all. But the concept that this
has anything to do with bin Laden being killed is noisome to me.
Which is more likely, that an ex-smoker over 60 who truly loves New York City
and made a special effort to help out during that time and is terribly
excited about the launch of her new album (and - TRUST me - is under
TREMENDOUS pressure from the record company to sell it) cancelled
because of some ineffable fear of something extremely unlikely,
or that she's got pneumonia? The logic there truly elludes me.

I'm in the same boat. There's no way I can come if it's rescheduled now. :( It's selfish, but I would definitely be more even more devastated if it's rescheduled.

She was a heavy smoker for decades and she's over 60,
therefore she has pneumonia. The two go together
automatically. *every* time.

Don't forget that she still smokes pot to this day. Pot is WAY rougher on your lungs than tobacco. That's why she struggles with lung issues to this day (bronchitis on TISL tour, pneumonia on IYD, her constant battle with her voice, etc).

Well if she is truly sick then I pray she does get better. A lot of ppl r canceling flight now cuz of that bastid so it truly does not surprise me if that's the reason she canceled. I don't blame her at all!

Either way I'd, I'm sure we'd all, want her in the best of health.......right?

Absativa-lutely.

I guess I'm trying to convey a little bit of a "warning" to those
who may not realize it that we have to be realistic here and this
may be a sign of things to come. That's one reason why
I feel so emotional about it. You wouldn't believe the damage I've
seen that crap do to family members; and from what I've seen, when
one ages, it happens every time, with no exceptions.
If you listen closely to "Destiny Rules," Lindsey says something to
Stevie flat-out about "the breathing problem," and that was years ago.
I really don't want to be a bummer but this may be initial-stage
emphysema. The lung cilia never grow back.

People have posted screencaps from Destiny Rules where she and Lindsey are smoking from a pot pipe (I believe in Mark Needham's office). And she's said quite a few times in interviews from the past 10 odd years that she hasn't touched any hardcore drugs since 1986.

I have tickets for that show, and I'd assume she'd cancel it also. I don't see how you can recover from pneumonia in 2 days. Even if she's feeling better, she wouldn't be in the best form vocally I'm sure, so I think I'd rather they cancel to be honest. I just hope they announce it soon so I can cancel my hotel reservations.

Wow I'm sorry to here this news. The first thing is for a speedy recovery for Stevie. She got take care of herself. She's 62 not 29.Thats the most Important thing.Who In the hell wants to go to work sick.I know I dont want to.She 's probably very upset and crying about us missing her.Which I know she is.She loves us.Ok I hope Liz and her reschedule the Webster show later and also if the AC show if she's still sick which she might still be by then.Since I do on the fly hotel reservations or travel plans.I dont have to worry about canceling them.I do really feel for you Ledgies that have to travel a long distance like Dani. The New York trip would of not bother me if Stevie canceled last minute on Wednesday.Since NY is only about 85 miles from me.Anyway my friend who is coming with my is sick with the stomach flu and he had a real estate brokers class which he forgot he had set for the 4th.Also He knows the suffering with pneumonia .he's been through it.The Webster site still has the concert up and it does not say its canceled yet.also according to their calender I see some weekend dates open.If Liz and Stevie reschedule I hope they do it on the weekend.By thursday I will worry about the AC show.Because I'm schedule to leave then.

P.S. Feel better Stevie.

mama needs a lot of rest, and a lot of vitamin c. I wonder if she takes vitamin c supplements when she's out on the road...that would do her a world of good especially at her age...

if you think about it, doesn't she get sick on almost every tour that she goes on? she got sick in the unleashed tour, the syw tour, the tisl tour...the enchanted tour? (i think?)

so maybe it's glad she's getting this sickness out of the way before the tour actually starts?

but really - first and foremost we hope she's taking good care of herself.

Pneumonia can kill you, particularly if you have a preexisting illness or any kind of autoimmune disorder. It's also particularly dangerous in---I hate to say this--but the elderly.:sorry: That's why they beg older folks to get flu and pneumonia vaccines each year. I've had pneumonia once and I was just 15 at the time and it kicked my ass. It took me a good month to feel like myself again.

Feel better Stevie!

This could have been the most amazing show. . . but I just hope Stevie gets better now and that people still go out and buy In Your Dreams. She deserves a good debut. Especially when her PR people are working her ass off.

I called Liz Rosenberg's office earlier. Whoever I talked to (perhaps Liz herself?) felt so sorry for us. When I told her I was flying from Ohio she was like, "Oh honey I'm so sorry." She said Stevie got sick late last week and that she tried really hard to get better but her doctor is not allowing her to fly here.

Seems to have come on awfully suddenly after the Bin Laden announcement. I'm wondering about that. She was in NYC on 9/11 and freaked out and almost canceled the TISL tour. Now I'm thinking, given her tendency toward self-involvement, she's probably afraid to come to New York and her publicist came up with the pneumonia excuse and allowed herself to be blamed for working Stevie too hard. I wouldn't be surprised if Stevie thinks she's going to be involved in some terrorist attack again. I'm trying not to be cynical, but it's hard not to, given some of her past behavior on tour.

If she is sick, then I have a message for her: QUIT SMOKING! That's why you're sick, Stevie, not because Liz Rosenberg worked you too hard. I stood next to you for a little while at the charity event in 2009 and you chewed gum like a maniac and reeked of cigarettes.

As I said earlier in this thread, Stevie definitely rescheduled at least one interview late last week, I think it was Friday. It was tweeted by the person who'd been told it had been postponed. So I think she is ill now, and was becoming ill as of then.

I don't see Bin Laden as a factor in this at all.

If she still smokes, then of course she shouldn't. But right now, I don't feel like blaming her. I feel like wanting her to get better.

"made her work too hard". Stevie still has some growing up to do, nobody can make her do anything. That said I know there had to be enormous pressure on her to do all the interviews. Still, knowing she has a tendency to get ill, she should know better by now. :( I am not saying it is her fault she is ill, I don't think that. But it's not her press agent's fault either. I am praying for her to get well soon.

I've decided not to come out for the one day after all. I just can't rally and am taking a mental health day instead and just chilling out. I'm sad I won't get to meet you and others, Danielle. You really are in one of the most awesome places.

Note to self, don't travel for Stevie unless you have a damn good Plan B set up!

One last thing, her father smoked into his old age AND he was involved in the Arizona Heart Institute. Addiction is a serious familial illness and without taking treatment seriously it is nearly impossible to beat. And I think Eric Roberts (one of last season's Celebrity Rehab patients) would attest to the fact that pot is not exactly a "soft" drug. I get the difference between it and heroin/opiates but it robs people of their motivation. Without it we may not have had to wait 10 years for this release.

You don't know she actually still smokes.

I 've been monitoring the Today Show for hell of it.Of course the great news about
Bin Laden factor dominates the news. The smoking factor is not good .As everyone knows.they got you hooked.and can't quit.Ok which interview was postponed.

I've been looking for the tweet but it's fallen off my #stevienicks search results, which are now all about the cancellation! I've tried to get the search to go further back, but I don't seem to be able to get it to work.

Basically, I'm pretty sure it was someone from a radio station and it said a phone conference was rescheduled. It had to have been tweeted before Saturday, too, because my search results go back that far and it's not in them.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I swear on my life that I saw it and thought it a bit odd at the time.

Here's what Rolling Stone has said about the canceled shows:

Stevie Nicks Cancels Promotional Dates
Stevie Nicks has canceled a string of appearances in New York because she has come down with pneumonia and the flu. Nicks was set to appear on the Today Show, Good Day NY and a concert at Webster Hall. "I want to apologize to all my fans and hope that we can reschedule and of course I hope you love the new album. It’s for you," Nicks said in a statement. [Press release]

I have to agree with you.I was thinking about this now. if they had the Rod tour and her cd release spread out a little bit.Her schedule was so tight and run her health to the ground like it doing. She need some breathing room between shows.I always say hell with the weeknight shows .Just do friday saturday and sunday only. The last minute on the fly planning that she does .she cant schedule weekends only. Also those outside shows like Jones Beach and those shed amps dont do justice to her health too.I've notice she was doing great in the past few years by skipping the outside venues and just sticking to arenas and casinos.

You couldn't have described how i was feeling better. I felt like I had some golden ticket for tomorrow night and now it's just a piece of paper that's worthless. As much as I'd like to think they will reschedule Webster Hall, I don't see it happening because of the unique timing and promotion that was behind it. And supposedly ticketmaster is refunding already.

I'm still on the fence as to whether I think the Borgata show will be canceled. On one hand, I'm sure all the equipment is already here on the east coast, so it would just be a matter of getting her and the band here. And the idealist side of me wants her to commit to coming and not letting this get any more off track. But the realist side of me thinks it's crazy for her to put her health more at jeopardy for a 2 hour show 3000 miles away from home. And if she's not feeling great, I don't want to witness a performance that is a good try, but just not up to par, especially in the midst of a huge media storm.

I think we will know by this afternoon what's going on.

I realize in the grand scheme of life, this shouldn't be anything to lose sleep over, but right now we all just feel punched in the gut and the wound is fresh. And I feel awful for everyone who spent moneyon travel accomodations, took off time from school/work and rearranged their lives to make it.

I hope there is an upside to this happening. Hopefully destiny will write the right ending on this one.

Hello Stephanie,

We're sorry, but the event has been cancelled. We have not received any word on whether or not they will reschedule it. However, if it would be rescheduled, you would just have to buy new tickets. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

First and foremost, I hope Stevie feels better soon. I am thankful that the tickets I almost purchased for Webster Hall disappeared before I could actually purchase them...I posted here at that time that "I guess I am not supposed to go to the show- everything happens for a reason". Well...I got my reason....that little ticketmaster "error" saved me thousands of dollars.

I feel bad for the people who actually flew to NY just to find out the show was cancelled.

One thing I will never understand when I read this board is why people would spend money they do not have. I have read comments like, " I spent money I didn't have on this trip".... Why would someone go in debt to see a concert or spend money they do not have to fly to a city to see a concert? I am really just trying to understand what it is that would motivate someone to spend money they don't have? Yes, the experience of seeing Stevie is priceless but c'mon. Really?

Cute idea, but so many of us NY Stevie fans are in overdrive getting ready for NOTS on Friday - However Id be a meanie if I didnt at least mention the clothing shop "Gothic Renaissance" on 4th Avenue at 11 Street. This is definitely the "Stevie Style" HQ for NYC, and the manager Stitch is a huge Stevie fan.

Well, it's fine to have such an opinion, but for some reason I think your comments kind of came across as a bit condescending and seemed to pour salt into the wounds of the many who traveled vast distances to attend the show in spite of financial limitations. The way I look at it, there are just some things in life that are essential experiences, never to be repeated again. And money should be the least of all impediments. Sure, it may seem foolish in the short term, but you do have those memories to savor long after you're back on your feet financially. I travel for shows and I can afford to do it comfortably. But I would never begrudge someone who is less fortunate from having the same experience.

This got me to thinking...is Stevie elderly? Isn't the term "elderly" reserved for people older than Stevie?

Stevie should take really good care of herself having pneumonia. I had it when I was 39 and I nearly died, spent a week in the ICU. And it took me 5 months to fully recover. Stay in bed, Stevie and hire a nurse.

I am not "begrudging" anybody...I just don't understand. Perhaps they are in the situation of being "financially limited" because they make emotional decisions without doing a cost benefit analysis when making these type of financial decisions? It just seems like bad financial planning....for one to go so far out of their way and spend alot of money they do not have to see someone they don't even know. I understand spending money you do not have if a relative was on their death bed and you had to fly there to say goodbye. But not for an out of state concert that they can not afford....if working a second or third job for several months to pay for the experience is worth it to them, more power to them, it just doesn't make sense to me.
