View Full Version : Initial Feelings On IYD

Will contain spoilers, obviously.
I didn't want to clog up the Rolling Stone thread with this, so I figured a new thread could be funky. Anyone can feel free to post their thoughts on the album here. I'll start!
At first, I wanted to listen to the track and then type what I thought. Halfway through, I realised that was a stupid idea as I’d be too busy focusing on the next song, so about the time of New Orleans, I just started writing down what I thought of each song. So if you noticed that there’s a sudden shift in writing style, that’ll be why!
Secret Love; what can I say? I really like this song. Mainly for the guitar, and the fact her voice sounds really really good on it. It’s a nice, gentle way to open the album. It shouldn’t turn people off, and it should make them want more. I think it works quite nicely as an album opener; whilst not an epic like Bella Donna, Wild Heart or Trouble In Shangri-La, it works. The guitar is really atmospheric and sets the tone for the rest of the album, imo.
For What It’s Worth; I love the country-tinged guitar throughout the song, her voice sounds really good in this one, and I love it when she sings with herself; it’s used to a great effect here; she hasn’t sang this well for a long time.
In Your Dreams; Picking up the tempo here, it’s not what I expected from the title track. When I think of Stevie + Dreams, I think mid-tempo, I think yearning, I think romantic. This is totally different to what I expected, but in a good way. I have no idea why this isn’t the first single, it’s instantly catchy and infectious, with a great guitar beat that makes you want to move along. Some really gorgeous lyrics here too.
Wide Sargasso Sea; I love the start of the song, just Stevie and the guitar before it really starts kicking off. I’m loving the repeated “even though they were so in love / they drew a line in the sand just because” and “the only thing they did together / was to make love” possibly the most sexually direct Stevie’s ever been in any of her songs? I don’t know, but I love it. I love the whole haunting breakdown part that we heard in the sizzle reel; it works so well with the song, and serves as a really effective way to close the last half of the song, the ending on “that kiss” is particularly stunning.
New Orleans; after the intensity of Wide Sargasso Sea, this one slows down the tempo, and it’s really pretty in its simplicity. It’s nice to hear Stevie and the girls sing together (which, for me, is the first time on the album you can really hear Sharon and Lori since Secret Love). Some gorgeous high notes from Stevie on this song, showing that she hasn’t lost that fabulous falsetto. I love how the instrumental starts off really quiet, and gets louder as the song progresses, making the real focus all on Stevie and her voice. The chorus is so typically Stevie, I love it. I’ll be singing this all night, I can tell you now.
Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream); this song, I was really worried about. Lady From The Mountains is my favourite Stevie demo of all time, and I was worried she wouldn’t do it justice. I’m very happy to say that she couldn’t have done it any better. Her vocal is really good throughout, she owns her voice; she knows exactly which notes she can and can’t sing, and rather than attempt something she can’t, she sticks to what she can and owns it. A very dramatic song, I love the updates to the lyrics of Lady From The Mountains; they flow really well, it doesn’t feel like she’s lifted the demo and slapped it into the middle of a song. It’s brilliant.
Annabel Lee; Wow that piano is really pretty. Loving the whole build-up to the song. I’m full of nothing but praise for Stevie’s vocals on this album, and although Annabel Lee wouldn’t have sounded out of place, vocally, on TISL, it has a strength and conviction to it. I don’t know how much of the lyrics are Poe, and which lyrics Stevie/Dave/Glen wrote, but they’re really pretty. Stevie recycles lyrics a lot on this album; but this isn’t a detriment to her ability at all, I love the recycling, it isn’t extensive enough to be a carbon copy, but it’s enough to make it very “Stevieish”. I love the use of the “bright eyes” lyric here. And that violin (?) instrumental break was really pretty. It gets pretty funky around the 4 minute mark, totally changing the mood of the song, but in a really clever way. I like this song a hell of a lot more than I thought I would! All those little “WHY did she pick THIS demo” thoughts have been well and truly banished now.
Soldier’s Angel; the intro really reminds me of Have No Heart; I wonder if that’s where she got the inspiration from. She doesn’t try to sing “well” on this one. If you get me. Instead she uses the unique sound her voice has developed to add to the mood of the song; and its super effective. The Lindsey harmony in the chorus is brilliant too. Possibly the most “serious” song Stevie’s ever written, the lyrics are both beautiful and haunting. Only Stevie Nicks can get away with singing “Camelot” too! I love how it gets so intense, before winding down to just her and Lindsey singing for the last half-minute or so. I’m loving the Battle of the Dragon lyric too, very effective. All my worries about this song; when I saw the poem, I thought it would be the next Stevie piano ballad and take “beautiful” into “sickeningly sweet” levels; all these worries are, thankfully, unfounded, and it’s really an atmospheric song.
Everybody Loves You; the intro music is really awesome. It’s like Gold Dust Woman meets Turkish Bazaar. Totally different to anything she’s ever done, yet still so totally Stevie. I sorta wish the strings (at least I think they’re strings) were more pronounced in the chorus; like they were in the demo. Although, I think the chorus is one of the most immediate on this album. Ooh, lyrics recycled from Not Make Believe; very nice, I love that song and I think I can love this one too. WOAH. When this song steps up, it REALLY steps up. Hello strings. Wow. This song is incredible. For those of you who were worried this song would be adult-contemporary-trash... you don’t have to worry about that at all. It’s so much more than that. Based on the snippet we’ve had forever, I always thought this would be a sweet little Stevie love song, so very wrong, but never have I been so deliciously happy to be so.
Ghosts Are Gone; that opening riff is an instant classic, I can tell. It’s like a modern day Rhiannon, with Rhiannon taking steroids. She’s not dancing around in a forest anymore! Love the passion in her voice on this one, and some gorgeous harmonization with Sharon and Lori. Recycling from Angel here; and it’s totally worthy to be Angel’s sequel. Stevie wailing over a guitar at the end? Hell yes. It really reminds me of the Rhiannon exorcisms from back in the day, minus all the drugs. This song shows why Stevie is the Queen of Rock and Roll; it’s an instant classic rock song, in my opinion. I really want to see her tackle this one live; I think it could be a show stopper.
You May Be The One; slowing things down a notch after Ghosts Are Gone. It sounds like a song a cabaret singer would sing, I mean that in a good way. It sounds pretty timeless. Very Stevie sounding lyrics, might possibly be the closest thing to filler on the album. It’s a very lovely song, and she sounds fantastic on it (and lots of Sharon and Lori, always a plus), but it doesn’t really inspire me as much as the others have done. The guitar is really nice throughout, and her voice is really impressive. The ending hits me as really effective.
Italian Summer; WOW! This song hits you straight away. Such a huge contrast from the dream-like You May Be The One, some gorgeous strings. (I’m a fan of strings). Gorgeous lyrics from Stevie here, I think it may be her most romantic song ever. It’s “epic” on the same level of Beauty and the Beast; but, I don’t think it has that same self-indulgence that Beauty and the Beast is sometimes accused of. Some fabulous long sustained notes from Stevie here. I’m liking the breakdown with Sharon and Lori doing the ahhhs in front of the orchestra, it’s quite pretty. Stevie’s singing is really good here; she’s using her voice to a fantastic level; singing softly when necessary, and using power when she needs to. I loved the ending, although, they could have slowed down the last two lines; it felt a teeny bit rushed, but that looooong sustained note was totally worth it.
Cheaper Than Free; while I’ve always quite liked this song, mainly cause I think it’s adorable, it works so much better in the context of the album. After the dramatic, powerful and all-round showstopper that is Italian Summer, it works wonderfully to wrap the album up. I believe someone on the forum described it as having a “post-sex cigarette” and that is pretty much the perfect way to sum it up.
All in all, it’s a bloody brilliant album. She’s finally using her voice to its full potential. Whilst sometimes on TISL she sounded strained, and some of her longer notes were unpleasant, and she sounded overly-nasal, she doesn’t have that problem on this album. She’s able to switch from crooning like a baby to belting out effortlessly. Even when she’s belting, she doesn’t sound strained; she sounds confident and assured. I think there’s something for every Stevie fan in this album. The lyrics are gorgeous and the music is fabulous; and she hasn’t sounded this good on record since Silver Springs on The Dance.

Initial feeling is that In Your Dreams should had been the first single. This is either the best or second best album of her solo career. Suprised that soo many songs have change ups and morph into something else. Makes the album extremely varied and extremely interesting. Suprised at how much I like Stevie's aged voice on this album. Her voice sounds right for this. I just love this album.

Yes,I was wondering if her voice would sound too ragged or hoarse but it's SO good throughout! I'm so pleased

I think her voice does sound weathered on this album, but I think it sounds RIGHT! It really works.

Overall this is a great record. There lyrics are very touching and the music is classic and has just the perfect flourishes to enhance the feel of the songs. Stevie's voice is weathered, but Glen & Dave use it to great effect, especially on some of the climax's of the songs like Annabel Lee, Moonlight, Wide Sargasso Sea & Ghosts Are Gone. I also love Stevie's soft voice put to great use on FWIW and New Orleans. No doubt in my mind they should have released "In Your Dreams" as the 1st single. And yes, this record blows TISL out of the water. It sounds more authentically like Stevie. The only song at this point that I can say may be a clunker is Soldier's Angel, but it could be it simply needs to grow on me, it just sounds so rough and stark against the other's.
Initial Standouts: For What It's Worth, New Orleans (I'm stoked & surprised how good this one is), In Your Dreams, Moonlight, Annabel Lee, Everybody Loves You, Italian Summer & Ghosts Are Gone.

I agree. I was hoping for more especially because Lindsey is on it.

I think the album is stellar. I also have the feeling that these songs will be timeless and will take on a new identity in years to come (Something that sadly not the case for most of TISL)
For What it's Worth - What a song - happy but sad at the same time - incredible.

I haven't listened to the entire album yet, I'm about 8 songs in, but I had to react:
I'm so in love with this album so far. I'm convinced it's her best work ever....yes, I think it tops Bella Donna.
"Secret Love" is a nice little pop song and good intro song and it is amazing that it's actually the weakest (relatively speaking.....there is no really weak track among the first 8) of the first 8 tracks.
I can definitely see why people are calling out "For What It's Worth" and "In Your Dreams". These are great songs.
For myself though the next five songs are *incredible*. "Wide Sargasso Sea" and "Annabel Lee" are wonderful songs and I think the sizzle reel, as good as it was, didn't accurately capture how amazing these songs are. In years past "New Orleans" would have been a Fleetwood Mac hit single. It totally has that sound. "Soldier's Angel" is intense and spooky and again amazing.
And then there's "Moonlight". I may have a new "favorite Nicks song ever"....this song is so awesome.
I'm not being very articulate at all right now but I'm just so excited about this album that I had to post something. I'll do better later. :)

I've been playing Moonlight & Annabel Lee over & over. I'll have to listen to the whole thing several more times to take it all in, but my first impression is that it's up there w/ Bella Donna and Rock a Little.

I love it all, but I find the lyrics of 'New Orleans' to be a bit blah, whilst I can't get into 'Soldier's Angel'. I don't think I ever really like Stevie's 'current issue' songs - Jane, Desert Angel, and now New Orleans and Soldier's Angel. Maybe they'll grow on me.

Great idea for a thread! I'm also very interested to hear what everyone's initial reaction to the album is upon first listen. We should do another thread in a month or two after we've all settled into the record and have had time to pick our favorites, etc.
After I saw that the album was posted on Rollingstone.com, I immediately made up some lame excuse as to why I wasn't feeling well and told my boss I needed to go home. Is that bad? That was an hour and a half ago. I just got finished listening to the whole thing. Here are my thoughts.
Secret Love - Although we've heard it for the past three months, I still enjoy it and think it's a fine little song. Not my favorite, but totally solid. Not sure if I would have opened the album with it, but whatever.
For What It's Worth - Another good song. LOVE THE INTRO! It's got a very bittersweet sentiment to it that I appreciate. Her voice sounds great here!
In Your Dreams - I love it! I could hear Tom Petty covering this. The harmony breakdown is awesome and the production of the entire song is flawless!
Wide Sargasso Sea - I'm not too sure about this one. Hmmm. Might need to listen to it over and over. I do like the outro, though!
New Orleans - A little too "cheese ball" for my tastes. The Ann Rice line was a bit much for me.
Moonlight - OH MY FREAKING GOD! WOOOOOOOOOOW!!! Exceeded ALL my expectations! I got goosebumps when that familiar piano riff from the demo started up. Her voice is exquisite and this very well might be my favorite song off the record. I really enjoy the new chorus and lyrics as well!
Annabel Lee - Better than I thought it was going to be. That minuet bridge that Dave came up with was really cool. It's okay I guess.
Soldier's Angel - Another great song. I love the simplicity of just the electric guitar, kick drum and vocals! Kind of reminds me of a lighter version of Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road".
Everybody Loves You - LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! The music, lyrics, EVERYTHING! Even the inclusion of some of the lyrics to "Not Make Believe" was a nice touch.
Ghosts Are Gone - The jury is still out on this one for me. The musicality and structure of this song have been done a million times before by many other artists. I didn't find anything special here upon my first listen.
You May Be The One - This song is EXACTLY what I'm going through with my ex-boyfriend right now, and she's saying everything I'm feeling. I really needed a song like this in my life at this time. I'M DEFINITELY FEELING IT!
Italian Summer - So atmospheric and descriptive! She really does paint a clear picture with this song. The key changes and string arrangement is incredible! Another song that gave me goosebumps! Love it!
Cheaper Than Free - My opinion still hasn't changed. Hate it! What a crappy song to end a very good album!
I'm going to go listen to it again now! :)

I've listened to it like 5x's, and I have to agree, I'd put it right next to Bella Donna, maybe even higher because it has so much more diversity and sophistication while still retaining a rootsy feel. It sounds like an instant classic to my ears. I'm digging every song cept' Soldier's Angel:sorry:, I keep skipping that one, but that'll probably change once I wear out all the others.

I put that I was listening to the album as my facebook status and that a review would follow. Here's the comment I put afterwards:
Her best since Bella Donna - no question. I had heard good things but I'm still surprised by it! There's an almost Dylan like track (For What It's Worth), a top pop tune (In Your Dreams), kick ass Rock (Ghosts Are Gone) and an acoustic track that sounds like it's from a current Buckingham Nicks album (Soldier's Angel - great harmonies from Lindsey!) There's also a kind of funk/blues/Tom Petty type tune (You May Be The One) and a big, lighters-in-the-air ballad towards the end (Italian Summer). Even with all this it still somehow sounds like "Classic" Stevie. Fantastic!
I'll do a more detailed breakdown soon, probably once I've lived with each track for a couple of days. I have to say that I'm seriously impressed though! I think that the album is just one big romantic drama!
Even Cheaper Than Free is better (though for me still by far the weakest track there) within the conext of the entire album.

I really like the mood, melody and singing on this, it's really gorgeous, but the lyrics leave much to be desired. With better lyrics, this could've been one of the greatest of her career.
LOVING Soldier's Angel. Lindsey's guitar sound rocks my world.

Yeah, it's the lyrics that drag it down - I find it hard to get past them but I LOVE everything else about the album! Wide Sargasso Sea is just some crazy, mental melodrama.

An album of (pleasant) surprises...
- Her VOCALS sound much better here than on TISL, which had (great) ups & downs. And far, far better than on SYW. The vocals were my biggest worry about the album, but I'm very pleased.
- I'm surprised to hear so little from Sharon & Lori. Not necessarily good or bad in terms of the music, it just makes this album different. Sharon & Lori have been a staple of her solo albums, & it would have been easy for Stevie to use them as a crutch. I applaud her for branching out in this respect. (I do like Sharon & Lori, but I'm sure we'll hear them plenty in concert.)
- I'm surprised by how much better the songs are than what we heard in the clips. ELY, for example. I like WSS much more than I thought I would. Same with IS.
- Haven't yet decided which of the rockers I like better, IYD or GAG.

Secret Love - Love it
For What It's Worth - I still have mixed feelings on this song. I keep revisiting it and I'm not feeling it yet. Listened again...still not feeling it.
In Your Dreams - VERY Tom Petty sounding but its fantastic. Love it!
Wide Sargasso Sea - Love it! So sexy! So very sexy!
New Orleans - A little Sleeping Angel like with the piano. Its powerful. Has such an awesome meaning. Its like Marti Gras. Its a positive out of sadness.
Moonlight - Favorite Track! Love it! No other words!
Annabel Lee - MUCH better than the demo. Love it.
Soldiers Angel - Great meaning behind the song. Its a track skip for me.
Everybody Loves You - Love it! Great duet!
Ghosts Are Gone - Love it!
Everybody Love You - Exactly what I thought it would sound like! Love it!
You May Be The One - The beat goes on and on...I love it. Its blues, its jazzy, its poodle skirts and high school dancing and I love it. I think everyone needs to sing this song to that man/woman that they thought were the one!
Italian Summer - EPIC.
Cheaper Than Free - Perfect way to end the CD.
I have to thank Dave for this CD...its remarkable.

Speaking of crutches, I'm glad she didn't featuring a gaggle of "special guests" on vocals like she did on TISL. This really feels like Stevie's album, not Stevie + random guests and producers.

Still taking it in, but I'll do this anyway...
-For What it's Worth: People keep saying this is country, but I don't hear it. Folky for sure, but not country. Anyway, it's very poignant. And bittersweet - evokes the same feeling as Landslide for me. Love Stevie harmonizing w/ herself.
-In Your Dreams: Kind of a rock shuffle thing. Like it a lot - really catchy. Dunno if I'd have necessarily picked it as a single over Secret Love and I don't absolutely adore it, but it's completely enjoyable.
-Wide Sargasso Sea: Love her vocal on this. I might quibble over some of the lyrics, but this is one that I've been playing over & over. Epic Stevie rock song.
-New Orleans: Like I've said, I was really worried about this one. I did not like the little snippet she did on the Unleashed tour at all, but I ended up liking this song a lot. Great little ode to New Orleans, and not patronizing like I was afraid it would be. Some great vocals on this one, too.
-Moonlight: Another one I've played over & over. I loved the RAL demos of Lady from the Mountains, but this is just magical and I'm glad she finally recorded this.
-Annabel Lee: Also loved the demo and was glad to hear she'd properly recorded it. It's the catchiest thing on the album to me, and it's another I've been playing repeatedly.
-Soldier's Angel: Thought it would be totally smarmy like Desert Angel, and it is somewhat self-indulgent, but not objectionably so...I don't think Stevie is capable of writing a song that isn't mostly about her, and you just have to accept that. Anyway, I love LB's presence on this. Their harmonizing is awesome as always, and his guitar makes the song.
-Everybody Loves You: Okay, I really don't like the euro-pop intro, but the song as a whole is pretty good. It's not an absolute favorite, but it's got a nice melody going.
-Ghosts Are Gone: The Zeppelin-esqe guitar is almost too much for me, but it's a great rocker, probably the best one she's done since Love Is Like a River. Really, though, one song like this goes a very long way for me. I definitely could not have handled half a dozen tracks like this one.
-You May Be the One: Didn't think much of it based on the title, but this is a great little blues-rock piece. Lyrically, I think is one of her best songs.
-Italian Summer: Nice ballad. Another one where I might quibble over some of the lyrics, but it's a really pretty song.
Just in general, I'd say the lyrics on this album are some of the best she's ever written.

I agree with others in the fact that this is probably the best album she's done now. Unlike her past albums I completely and fully love each song where on the others there are one or two I'd skip.

So far I love everything.
Only thing I'm not totally into is Everybody Loves You... the verses are GREAT, but the chorus does nothing for me, and I may get shot for saying this but I REALLY can't stand Dave's singing. It ruins it for me - at first he's just singing an octave below her, rather than putting in a different harmony part, which sounds horrible, and even when he deviates from that it's just... there's no blend. It sounds bad.

My initial reaction is this is the most solid, cohesive work she's done since OSOTM. Her vocals and lyrics are decidedly gritty. This is a very straightforward album, it's very real. It even borders on political in a few spots. I think you could even call this a departure for Stevie. The country flair exhibited throughout surprised me. I'm not sure I'm entirely sold on that aspect yet. Soldier's Angel is the biggest shocker... it made me sob. It made my partner sob, and he's not even a Stevie fan at all. Overall, this is a very good album. I think it'll grow on me even more as I listen to it.

I feel after listening to IYD that this is her most rock oriented cd since Belladonna. It's very bluesy in parts, which really lets her get more emotion into her vocals. That's all i can say Moonlight is amazing, IYD is amazing, Annabel is kiss ass, Ghost Are Gone is wicked. The whole thing is incredible.

The three songs I'm having a really hard time getting into are "New Orleans", "Wide Sargasso Sea" and "Ghosts Are Gone". It's a lyrics issue with the first two and a musical structure issue on the latter. I'm trying though. Perhaps on future listenings I will warm up to them.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Stevie's going to get a Grammy for this album. It just unfolds with every single listen. It's got the best aspects of all her albums: the consistency of Bella Donna, the romance of Wild Heart, the rockers of Rock A Little, the dreaminess of Other Side Of The Mirror, the straightforward pull no punches lyrics of Street Angel... and despite all that, it's still utterly fresh and an absolute departure from anything she's ever really done. I'm so proud of Stevie.

This album is nothing short of profound and will leave a legacy long after Stevie Nicks has flown to the angels...
In other words, I love it! I do have one thing to say and this is in no way a criticism and I'm sure most would disagree with me but I wish there was just one track with synths a la Rock a Little just for old times sake . Part of it is just because I personally love the synths and drum machines but totally understand that would not fit in with this album and probably ruin it.
I'm not ready to go into detail about what I think of each song because I have to listen to each of them a number of times before forming an opinion.

I definitely agree about the 'no punches pulled' style lyrics, which to me are also very reminiscent of the better parts of Street Angel in a really good way. That was the last comparison I would have wanted or expected to be making. I still have to say that as much as I enjoy that facet of her songwriting, I simply can't compare the more straightforward numbers to the likes of 'Moonlight', 'Annabel Lee', 'Italian Summer' and 'Wide Sargasso Sea', which I think of as mood pieces in a way.
Having said that, I think this record rather deftly straddles that slim territory that falls between a record drowning in a bit too much chiffon and esoteric mysticism (sort of like TOSOTM and WH), and an overly prosaic, dare I say dull record (More like Street Angel and the middle of TISL).

Yes, this record recalls the simple beauty of Bella Donna all grown up, mature and sophisticated. The musical finesse and refinements really elevate this record as a whole above anything else she has released as a solo artist. This is a defining moment in Stevie's career. She really has evolved.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY (website):
We'll never complain about hearing Stevie warble the word dreams; indeed, several times here she comes remarkably close to Fleetwood Mac's platinum-plated best. But In Your Dreams, Nicks' first studio album since 2001, is also streaked with the witchy-woman weirdness only she can bring: On ''New Orleans,'' she recalls her eternal desire to ''wear feathers and lace,'' while ''Soldier's Angel'' finds her intoning ominously about war. Crystal visions? Still intact.

Okay I've listened to the full album about a dozen times now so here's my full reaction:
In summary, definitely Nicks' best album ever. Every single track is a winner and many of them are obvious classics already. It's a perfect mix of dreamy, mystic, and rocking. I agree with Stevie that this is "[her] little Rumours". I think her singing on this album is some of the best singing she's ever done, which just shows that as Ben Mink has said "The really great vocalists are very affected by their mood"....on this album Stevie was clearly very happy and it shows in her glowing vocals. I love the album cover and the "Stevie Nicks" logo is very cool.
Secret Love - I think this is a really good, well written song. I think it's a little "soft" for the people that don't like it, but I think it's a great song. It's a good opening song as well. For a single, it is a really good teaser single...in other words, where the record company plans to follow up with stronger songs.
For What It's Worth - I can see why some people are calling this song out. Great lyrics, excellent song. Sometimes Campbell/Nicks can be a little "pedestrian" in sound but not this time around. This may be their best joint composition. The music is textured and catchy but I think the lyrics really make it a cut above. One of the future Classics.
In Your Dreams - This an obvious single, and in better times I firmly believe would have been a Top 10 Billboard hit for Nicks. It's amazingly catchy. I've always felt that for Nicks the title tracks indicate how good the album is as a whole. The fact that it would be the first ever title track that's a single (I think "Trouble In Shangri-La" came close) demonstrates how wonderful this album is as a whole. I also think that this is another "Lindsey" song, mainly by the "I'm always in and out of your life" line.
Wide Sargasso Sea - This one has some real heft. Its MUCH catchier than I expected from the sizzle reel snippet. It's probably one of my favorites on the album and I wasn't expecting that at all. A great Nicks rocker in every way.
New Orleans - I consider this to be the "Fleetwood Mac song that wasn't"...it totally sounds like a Mac song to me. Like, a *classic* Mac song. Many people on here are mentioning this song as a favorite and a stunner and I totally agree. It's very well written and could be a single as well. This is a future Classic as well.
Moonlight - THE highlight on an album full of highlights. Truly an amazing song in every way. I can't get the chorus out of my mind. This is so good that it rates up there with "Dreams", "Gypsy" and "Thrown Down". Needless to say, Classic track number three. This is Stevie Nicks in her full black chiffon witchy glory.
Annabel Lee - I thought that this song was potentially plain from the sizzle reel snippet. It's anything but. It's one of the best songs on the album and I love the musical vamp partway through the song. The ending of the song is very compelling as well.
Soldier's Angel - I tend to cringe at songs with "angel" in the title as they're usually trite but this song is anything but. It's eerie, beautiful, heart-breaking and better harmony singing between Nicks and Buckingham than most of the songs on Say You Will. This song demonstrates real potential for Fleetwood Mac to do a really great album in the future.
Everybody Loves You - This is the fourth track with obvious single potential. In some ways it rivals "In Your Dreams" in catchiness. I have to be a little smug here: I loved the "Everybody Loves You" snippet that we heard way back, so I'm chuckling at the people who are saying they now love this song while they'd hated the snippet. HA! ;)
Ghosts Are Gone - Great rocker and I think the way Nicks sings it really adds the hook to the song. I like the lyrics a lot. I like rockers that still have a definite hook to them and this one absolutely does.
You May Be The One - This is the one song that didn't immediately catch me, but it only took another listen or two and then it did. There's a real bluesy sound to this one. The lyrics rock. I'm not surprised that it's mentioned as a favorite by many people.
Italian Summer - Nicks' best ballad ever. There's a great lush romanticism to it and this song is both potential single number 5 and also future Classic number 4. The note that she holds at the end gives me goosebumps.
Cheaper Than Free - I don't understand why some people hate this song. I think there's a real sweetness to it and its very heart-felt. It's a very warm way to close out the album and makes perfect sense here.
Favorite songs in order: Moonlight, New Orleans, Everybody Loves You, Wide Sargasso Sea, In Your Dreams, For What It's Worth, Italian Summer, Secret Love, Annabel Lee, Cheaper Than Free, Soldier's Angel, You May Be The One, Ghosts Are Gone. All of them are great songs.

As a longtime Stevie fan....this collection brings things full circle for me...she finds herself as a sweet, introspective storyteller , a woman t peace with herself...the delusions of street angel are gone, the aimless wondering of BellaDonna are over, the angst of Rock a little is calmed, the wild love of wild heart and the haunting search for meaning with OSOTM..are all memories......its all over....shes written this sweet layered collection of songs for herself and we get to listen in the quiet of our rooms...and the days go by like a strand in the wind...

I listened to it at lunch today, then just now (properly), sitting on my balcony with candles and a glass of red wine.
I LOVE it. The production is fantastic. It has a different/updated sound yet it's still very "Stevie Nicks". I heard influences in the songs of Eurythmics (duh), Petty, The Beatles and even Led Zepplin (guitar in the New Orleans song). Moonlight's chugging guitar part reminded me of Edge of 17. I also love it how Stevie always re-uses lyrics in different songs where they seem fit - "Ghost through the fog", "Sometimes it was heavenly, sometimes it was too heavy", "No one walks away form this battle.." Awesome.
I had tears during "Italian Summer", and went ahead and let them fall this time. (Last time I heard it Stevie was in the room, about 8 feet away from me so I held it in.)
It was a glorious experience listening to the entire album in a relaxed atmosphere.
Tomorrow it's going to help me through my morning workout!

Inspired by, yes. Imitating, no. :) You can hear Sheryl was heavily inspired by Stevie on her album Wildflower (especially her vocal style). I think Stevie just wanted to make a much more down to earth, straightforward album given the state of the world right now. And those are the kind of albums Sheryl is best at. I wonder if Sheryl was consulted in any way for this work? If she hung around the house some while it was made? Or if Stevie was just channeling her style to a certain degree?

Agreed. I think "Illume" is a fantastic song.
You know when you think about it, Nicks' songwriting has really soared back to where it was. She was an amazing songwriter until Klonopin starting creating "long nets of white" clouding her memory. Since she got off it, her songwriting has sharpened back to where it was as evidenced by Trouble In Shangri-La, Say You Will and now In Your Dreams.

I think that Soldier's Angel offers a darkness and uniqueness that gives the album depth. Let's face it. It's not exactly about the soldier's. It's about Stevie's experience in the hospital, feeling their pain. She's trying to illustrate through the song that she understands their pain through their and their family's eyes. It's a sentiment thing. I don't think I have heard a song from this unique perspective. I guess that is what makes Stevie Stevie. It is only a song that Stevie Nicks could write. It's not my favorite on the album, but I really appreciate the production and the uniqueness of it. It certainly gives the album a grungy, heartfealt depth.

I think that Landslide inspired Chances Are. That was Sheryls attempt at Landslide. Good is Good was definitely an attempt at imitating the Beatles. That is what Sheryl is good at -imitating. The woman is talented. She does have her own style. But she has been heavily influenced by Stevie, Beatles and other classic rock artists. Stevie can be influenced by Sheryl too. I think New Orleans may be have been written because Sheryl was writing about New Orleans. When I heard For What It's Worth, I thought Sheryl would be saliviating. It's the kind of stuff she loves from that era.

Am I the only one who finds For What Its Worth to be dull? This song isnt doing much for me.
Favorites so far are Moonlight, Wide Sargasso Sea, Italian Summer and Annabel Lee.
Unsure about Soldiers Angel, FWIW, You May be The One.
Cheaper Than Free is the weakest track IMO.

I'm liking Wide Sargasso Sea and Italian Summer more than I did at first listen; not that I disliked them before. I still think the intro on Everybody Loves You sounds ridiculous, as does her pronunciation of "can't." I think this might wind up being my least favorite song on here.
I hadn't listened to Secret Love in a while, but I've found myself liking it more in the context of the album.

I'm the same way. I'm neutral on it as a single, but when I listen to it as the opener to this, I really enjoy it.

the first few times i heard for what its worth i didnt like it that much but now i love it. there is something so sad and heartbreaking to it that i almost cry everytime i hear it. there are some songs i love on first listen and then there are others that might take 10-20 listens for me to love them.

weeeeell after listening to this literally all day <i have no will power to wait> i am seriously blown away by this record. much much more fabulous than i thought (TISL being my fail benchmark) :p
i just have to say i am obsessed with Wide Sargasso Sea like a bee to honey and For What It's Worth may be the saddest sh!t i ever heard ... like Love Is but ... gaaaaaaawd it's depressing. i love it.
Indifferent New Orleans & Annabel Lee (which is sad coz i love the demo)
Like Everybody Loves You, Cheaper Than Free, Ghosts Are Gone
Love Secret Love, Italian Summer, You May Be the One
REALLY LOVE Wide Sargasso Sea, In Your Dreams, For What It's Worth, Soldier's Angel, Moonlight *cough* Lady From the Friggin Mountain *cough*
I hope In Your Dreams is the second single. Why it wasn't the FIRST single who knows aaaaaaaaaaaaargh

A few of the songs took more than one listen to get into for me.
I feel in love with Moonlight the first time I heard it and I think it's my favorite off the album (that and Secret Love, which I'm still obsessed with).
The only one I'm not totally into at this point is Soldier's Angel. I'm indifferent. I'm sure I'll warm up to it soon though. I always do.

That's too funny! I've actually been calling it "Lady From The Moonlight" these past two days! ;)
Intresting that "Moonlight" seems to be the only really witchy, mystical Stevie tune on this record. With TISL, the first 4 songs were all pretty mystical as well as Bombay Sapphires...but there isn't much with this record. Perhaps a bit of the musicality of Secret Love, but that's about it. The rest are just a plethora of musical styles - Alt Country, Rock, Ballads, Blues, etc.

I said this in another thread but I'm saying it again...is anybody in the least bit disappointed that Stevie only wrote the music to 4 tracks on this album? I must admit one reason I do not think this will ever be my favorite Stevie album is the simple fact that only 4 of the songs are truly hers. I'm thrilled that she is able to co-write great songs with Dave but I still distinguish songs by whether or not Stevie wrote the lyrics and music. I'm not saying I like those songs less but the ones only she wrote will always be a little more special to me.

I really don't pay any attention to that at all. And I honestly think it's silly the way that some people will completely write off songs solely because they weren't penned by Stevie. I honestly couldn't tell you which songs (on any album) were written by Stevie alone, or Stevie and someone else.

Oh I most certainly do not "completely write songs off" because they weren't penned by Stevie. I just make that distinguishment.

I am a little disappointed about that also. Only because she is such an excellent writer. The songs she actually did write will hold special meanings for me as well. I have to say though, i really can't find fault w/ anything about this cd. I think Dave really worked magic with Stevie. He pulled so many great vocals and emotions out of her it's amazing ! Italian Summer is a great example. You can visualize EVERYTHING she's singing about. I can't get enough of this gem

Not really, I'm more pleased that she wrote all the lyrics, rather than being disappointed she didn't write the music. Stevie is a lyricist, not a musician. If Stevie wrote the music for all her songs, they'd probably all be clunky and piano based. But, the fact she wrote all the lyrics is a huuuge deal for me. Mainly because the lyrics in this album are so good, and they really feel like Stevie's songs. I think if she had the musical know-how, her songs would sound exactly the same as they've turned out anyway.

I think most of the album has a very gothic/dark romantic feel to it. Wide Sargasso Sea and Annabel Lee are two of the other most obvious songs in that vein.

But you can't deny the fact that this is her only solo album in which she wrote or co-wrote every song. I would much rather hear her singing her own words than someone else's.
Upon first glance, I have noticed that Stevie's lyrics are a lot more verbose than on any other Stevie album. For example, take the first verse of "Italian Summer" - it has amazing visual imagery that literally paints the scene in your mind; she has never written anything so vivid. I think this has a lot to do with she and Dave's approach to songwriting. In their collaboration, Stevie could focus on the words while Dave had to take on the difficult task of trying to compose music that fit her poetry; in the past, I suspect it was the other way around, and Stevie had to edit her words to make them work with the music. This freedom from music composition really gives her latitude to take her prose as far as it can go.

Yes. I just don't seem to respond as deeply to songs where she doesn't also write the music.
But this brings up another interesting point for me. Stevie is credited with "Words" on a lot of these songs, which to me means she just wrote the lyrics. But from listening to her & Dave describe the way they work together, I had the impression that she was also writing -- or at least helping with -- the melody. Right? I think she's downplaying her contribution in just taking credit for "Words."

Dave basically came up with the chord progression of the song, and Stevie sang her lyrics over that while he did it... and they went from there. At least, that's how she described it. So yes, I think for the most part Stevie did come up with the melody - but it was based off of what Dave was playing.

Well, he asked her to sing her poems and he played along with the guitar. Then they changed things around, so she worked out the melody with him.

Ah, I was thinking the exact same thing when I listened to it all the way through! It just flows. Nothing sounds out of place or takes you off guard.. it's really quite fantastic.
I found some of the transitions a little jarring. It definitely all works together, but I'm not sure I'd have sequenced it like this. Maybe it'll make more sense on my second start-to-finish listen!
This is such a lovely sentiment :xoxo:  I think this shows in how happy Stevie seems to be with this album and the whole process of making it. It really shows off what this girl can do!

I don't think it's technically incorrect--just a slightly odd way of phrasing it. I might be wrong, though. Any English majors? Marissa?
I'm having a harder time accepting "No it could not happen worse." Like, if You May Be the One weren't such an awesome song in every other way, that line would probably be enough to put me off it entirely.

it is grammatically correct. since "was" is a linking verb, it joins the subject of the sentence ("thing") with the complement ("to make love."). if the line read "the only thing that they did together was make love," it would be incorrect because "make love" is not a noun or adjective. you cannot describe a noun with a verb. in this case, "to make love" is an infinitive, which functions as a noun in this sentence. stevie has bent or broken other grammar rules in the past, but she is on point in this example.

OK I finally realized it was dunm to make myself wait til Tuesday. Really what was I thining. What do I gain out of that. It's the same music, I waited 10 years for it, is it gonna sound better on it "official" release date. No it'll sound the same. So I've listened through 3 times now.
I know I'm like #116 to say this but WOW just WOW. Exceeded expectations in every way. Ghosts are Gone is quite possibly just my absolute favorite Stevie solo song ever forget in X number of years, just ever. Soldiers Angel is right up there with it (although as much as I love it, they could've saved it as the first finished song on the next FM album, although then your risking it to not ever come out) Its way better then Bella Donna, which is what we seem to all use as a measuring stick although I don;t know why since BD isn't everyone's favorite album to begin with. IYD is better then BD to me, but the real decision I have to make is if it surpasses Wild Heart. Way too early to tell, but I'm going with tenatively yes. I guess I should do a song by song:
1. Secret Love- Very Ironic, maybe her best album ever but this is without a doubt her worst opening track. I always "liked" this song, but secretly hoped it wasn't anywhere near the best and it sure isn't. In fact 11 songs are better.
2. For What Its Worth- Like I gathered from the clip this could be on Tom Petty Wildflowers or Neil Young Harvest. In fact I almost hear Old Man with different lyrics and vocals obviously. Love it,.
3. IYD- So freaking catchy and full of energy
4. Wide Sargasso Sea- Amazing soaring vocals. Ghosts wins the battle of the rockers but this is just so new sounding for her.
5. New Orleans- Such a positve and uplifting song for NO. I really hope it gets some national attention. The last minute is my favorite.
6. Moonlight- On first listen I really didn't like how the new and old portions mixed. But after being ready for the switch I got the awseomness. although the slow piano parts especially the very first few lines are way too nasal. This could be compared to Nightbird on steriods
7. Anabel Lee- Wow did they do a great job with this song. This is like the child of Gypsy and Sara. Its weird how I feel about this song. I can name 10 things great about this song. The vocal, the amazing lush music. The ending. The interlude, but in the end I just can't REALLY get into it. I like it, but its my least favorite of the 11 songs I like a lot if that makes any sense. It's just too long and rambling and never ending.
8. Soldiers Angel- Favorite Angel song ever. Liek many I expected soft Landslide like when I pictured this song. Blown away by her voice, her words, Lindseys harmony and playing. Better then anything they did on Say You Will.
9. Everybody Loves You- Possibly the most decieving clip ever. There's so much going on here. The verses remind me of a song that I can't think of.
10. Ghosts Are Gone- As mentioned above maybe my all time favorite Stevie song. I think the "yeahs" in the middle put it over the top
11. A Stevie Nicks Album where wou can actually enjoy the players!!! It's like that throughout the whole album but it really stood out here. It's something blatently missing from almost her whole solo career, aside from maybe Bella Donna. It's almost Stevie's YMLF
12. Italian Summer- Lives up to the hype. It would be her best album closer if was the actual closer like it should be.
13. Cheaper Then Free- Why Why Why. Better then half of OSOTM and really not bad, but on maybe her greatest album ever why couldn't this not be here so EVERY song could be better then OK. Also, it's impossible to listen to this after Italian Summer.

I do too... it creates a great atmosphere. I also really like the neat little random things they did with stevie's voice here and there. For instance, during the bridge of the title track (roughly 2:02-2:05) when Stevie sings "it's a beautiful.... daaaaaay." Whatever they do with her voice when she sings "day" is just the coolest little effect. They also let her voice hang out by itself when she sings "day," adding further drama and emphasis to her voice. It's the little things like that which bring me the most pleasure :).

First ever post, even tho been worshipping Stevie since the release of Rumours, and reading The Ledge for years too.
Been so looking forward to this album and am in no way disappointed. Could be my favourite ever, but that will take a long time to test.
Congratulations Ms Nicks. A Masterpiece I hope is not your last.

I also really like the neat little random things they did with stevie's voice here and there. For instance, during the bridge of the title track (roughly 2:02-2:05) when Stevie sings "it's a beautiful.... daaaaaay." Whatever they do with her voice when she sings "day" is just the coolest little effect. ).
I have to disagree with you there. I think it sounds instantly dated. And I think that particular effect works better with somebody who is generally lacking, not overflowing, in vibrato.

I am blown away.
First of all - I love Moonlight. When she sings "she feels lost, disconnected" - just gorgeous. I knew I would love this song and I do. And I love the chorus.
I also love Annabel Lee. I was not sure how much I would but I do. And I see this being her Rhiannon in concern. I just feel the end of this song has the potential as she saw with Rhiannon.
Ghosts are Gone. I feel that if I walk into Gillys in Vegas, they will be jamming to this song. I can see this as a rock country dancing song. And I think people love it.
Italian Summaer is goreous. Just love that song. She and violins just go together. This could be her new closer. That end note she holds is just amazing.
Wide Sargasso Sea. I was not sure I'd like this from the snippet but I am blown away by it. Absolutely love it.
In Your Dreams - I agree with what has been said - great song. Catchy chorus.
I just am incredibly impressed with this record - start to finish.
Stevie and Dave did a near perfect job.

My update on initial feelings now that I've listened to the album close to a couple dozen times:
I still say this is Nicks' best solo album ever. Every song is a winner. What's been registering with me with repeated listenings:
"For What It's Worth" is really Dylan-esque. There's a real depth to this song that I think a casual listen doesn't register right away.
"In Your Dreams": "I'm just at the other end of your night, I'm always in and out of your life" is a fantastic lyric couplet. Definitely the catchiest song on the album....sometimes catchy songs can be grating in a way, but this one isn't at all.
"Wide Sargasso Sea" has a real haunting quality that grows and grows on you. It's now my second favorite song on the album.
"New Orleans" still sounds like a lost classic Fleetwood Mac song to me. I think this could be a single.
"Moonlight" is still breath-taking and still the centerpiece of the album.
"Annabel Lee" continues to grow on me like "Wide Sargasso Sea" is. I'm beginning to think it's the second centerpiece of this album.
"Soldier's Angel": I really liked this at first because it wasn't at all what I was expecting. The eerie-ness of it really appeals to me. I wondered if after that initial happy-to-be-surprised take if I would like the song less but that hasn't happened yet.
"Everybody Loves You": I still have the same opinion of this song. Another great pop song on the album and potential single #3.
"Ghosts Are Gone": Even though its my least favorite on the album I still love it. The lyrics are awesome and I love the hook that Nicks gets from the way she sings the song.
"You May Be The One" was my least favorite at the first listen but its grown on me a lot since then. I love the slight bluesy sound.
"Italian Summer" is just gorgeous and romantic. I don't care if some on here (and are you people lyricists yourselves?) are carping on the lyrics.
"Cheaper Than Free". I think the simpler lyrics actually fit very well. It's a very warm, heart-felt song. I love it.

And the reading of that line you may be the "righteous one" might be my favorite seconds on the album. The wry, condemnation in her tone, just creates such an emotional high in the song.
Both You May Be The One and Italian Summer remind me of a broadway musical because there are just moments in both songs where you want to cheer and you can imagine an audience reacting as one, erupting in applause when they hear it.

"Annabel Lee" continues to grow on me like "Wide Sargasso Sea" is. I'm beginning to think it's the second centerpiece of this album.
.
These songs are IMHO together the album's centerpiece the way that Moonlight segues into Annabel is just stunning..it almost makes up for the jarring segue from Soldier's Angel to Everybody Love You.

I just want to say that I'm still taking it all in. The music, the lyrics, the feelings I'm having, both good & bad. I must say that I'm pretty goddamned blown away by how great this album is. I am beyond thrilled. Can't wait to have the CD in my hands on Tuesday.

I'm having a harder time accepting "No it could not happen worse." Like, if You May Be the One weren't such an awesome song in every other way, that line would probably be enough to put me off it entirely.
Are you sure it's not "It could not have been worse"?

A couple of posters have transcribed it as "could not happen worse", so I was following the consensus. I just listened again, though, and you're right--it sounds like it could be "could not have been worse."
I hope you're right!

just wow.. just finished my second listen via the rs stream... I knew this album was going to be good.. but it broke my heart... I'm just like, what did I just hear... my day is going to be all about this new record - I hope the stream holds up. I feel like Stevie opened up my journal, read it, and than wrote these lyrics. I feel so much of these words on "In Your Dreams"
"i used to dream that you were an angel.. I used to love you soooooooooo much"
Stevie Nicks. I love you. Thank you.
way too early favorites: Everybody Loves, You May Be the One, For What's It Worth, Moonlight, ANNABELL LEE (unbelievable ending), Italian Summer, In Your Dreams, Secret Love, New Orleans..

Tonight is my first listen too. For What It's Worth is heartbreaking. My x of 8 years stopped by with the CD and we listened for the 1st time. We have been broken up for 3 years now and have managed to pull our friendship back together. We stopped the CD after FWIW because we were both crying so much. We hugged one another and talked a bit. We both being love Stevie and have since we were kids but have never been moved to tears by her songs. This song brought back a lot of emotions for our failed relationship.
Sorry if I am being too personal. It just really touched us. Thank you so much Stevie.
I think I am going to be skipping that song for a while. It's so heartbreaking. I love it but...wow.
I cannot stop listening to Moonlight. I knew it was going to be my favorite song on the CD. I miss so much from Lady from The Mountain but I am so glad she brought parts of that song to life. I LOVE IT!
This CD is so different from anything she's ever recorded imo. I can't say I think it's her best but I love it.
I am so glad Stevie is back!

In no particular order:
1. Annabel Lee rocks my socks.
2. "Holy flurking schnit." This is all I can think whenever Ghosts Are Gone kicks in. *Epic* guitars.
3. I get oddly freaked out every time I hear that very final strum on You May be the One - it's near identical to a live version of 'Lily Was Here' I've listened into the ground (*cue X-Files theme to acknowledge Stevie link to old Dave song*). The song, by the way, was one of my favourites on the first listen, and it's holding up very well with me. Love the bluesy sound.
4. New Orleans makes me want to sing in the streets of the French Quarter too. I think I'd be scared of the vampires, but Stevie makes them sound pretty awesome too.
5. I'm with whoever said it took them a while to adjust to the meeting of old and new in Moonlight - I felt exactly the same way, and I was kinda disappointed after the snippet we'd heard, but it's grown on me immensely. I'm loving that 'They meet in the middle' around 03:40 - I don't know why.
6. Wide Sargasso Sea is a zillion times better than that sizzle reel snippet let on.
7. Stevie's last 'You saved my life' in FWIW? Gah. It's perfect.
There's a tremendous amount of 'catchiness' to practically every song - but not at the expense of quality lyrics. It's a very pleasing mix.
It's no wonder Stevie is so damn proud of this album.

I've been listening to the stream since it was on and got my iTunes download last night. I can't even get to the rest of the album right now because I keep playing Moonlight and Annabel Lee over and over. I always do this. I absolutely LOVE this album. I think it may prove to be my favorite (but i probably have said that when each one came out...)
I really love ALL of the lyrics...I like Sargasso, Soldier and Ghosts Are Gone, but I don't love them...i think in all three cases the music could be better...but I like them fine...
I LOVE For What It's Worth, In Your Dreams, New Orleans, Moonlight (so happy they kept in the metronome from Lady...) Everybody Loves You, You May Be The One & Italian Summer...Love the interlude in Annabel Lee (the whole song is great, but I do like the changes since the early version is what I mean) My Heart...hmmm...I think I like the original version better...even though to me, even then it sounded dated...almost like it could have been a Rock A Little outtake...I just love it...we'll see what time brings...(and btw, as I am typing this, Ghosts Are Gone is playing and I already like it better...) And Cheaper Than Free has actually grown on me quite a bit...yes it's simplistic...but very pretty...OH! I almost forgot Secret love! Love it : ) :blob1::]:D

After listening to the entire album, here are my initial thoughts:
EASILY among the best work she's ever done. I thought TISL was good, but it's blown out of the water by IYD.
Vocally, she sounds better than she has in years. Who would have thought, 10 years ago, that she could hit that note in "Italian Summer"?
There is not a weak track on here. I think "Cheaper Than Free" works within the context of the album. I may have been most pleasantly surprised by "Annabel Lee." I never liked the demo that much, but this is just amazing.
I'm overwhelmed at how good this is.

I bought the album and listened to it today. Overall, I like it. Moonlight, In Your Dreams, Annabel Lee, and You May Be the One are excellent songs! Still, I have some reservations. In quite a few places, it seems like Stevie is talking instead of singing. It lessen the impact of the songs. Also, I just feel like something is missing from this album, even though I can't quite figure out what it is. Lastly, I feel like 'For What It's Worth' adds nothing to this album. It would have been better without it

My take on this album so far...
Secret Love - I like it alot, but it's too A/C. I think that lyrics to this song are excellent. I just don't like the intro into the song, which is dated. It takes a while to get going. However, it's drippy and sorta funky in parts. Not dynamic enough for a single, although I like it is better than Rooms on Fire. I've heard this song soo much, I skip it. I'll come back to it.
For What's it's Worth - Well, this is the song Dave an David Wilde really liked and I was excited about hearing. I like it alot but it had to grow on me. I wanted more. I was expecting the song would have a change up in it and its pretty straightforward. Still, it's good and it takes me back to the 70s, my favorite era of music. This song doesn't seem to flow that well after Secret Love and it stalls the energy of the album. However, this album is soo ecletic, it works.
In Your Dreams - I like this song. It's got radio hit written all over it. The more I play it the more I like it. Gives the album much needed energy and is just solid stuff.
Wide Sargasso Sea - Fun, sorta Funky and SEXY! I was not expecting this. I love how the rock comes in and she does a good job at telling the story. Stevie's voice is perfect for this song. This song reminds me of Fancy by Reba McEntire and Bobbie Gentry.
New Orleans - I really, really like this. It's the best the song about New Orleans I've heard. Stevie sounds like she is from New Orleans and she is right at home on this song. The lyrics are perfect, the bittersweet mood is perfect and the ending is perfect. The ending of the song with the violin seems to say "Lets close this sad chapter."
Moonlight - probably my favorite song from the album. Her voice on this song is stellar. The song starts out moody, yet, touching and it pulls me into the song. The lyrics touch an emotional chord. The chorus is nice and is filled with great imagery. However, it's the harmonies on this song that are really terrific. When Stevie and her background sing together its just perfection. The chanting and verses at the end can't be beat.
Annabelle Lee - I love the music to this song and I think what she did to the versus was really creative. I think the music sounds like Fleetwood Mac and I play it to just hear the piano and the beat. However, I wish they cut a minute of this song. It doesn't need to be that long. It has a nice chorus too.
Soldier's Angel - To me it's the dark heart of the album. I love the grittyness to the song. The harmonies are great and when she gets to the climax and sings "they are the soldiers of my heart," I'm there with her. When I'm in a dark mood I play this song a lot. Very Doll Parts by Hole. I really appreciate the humming and unique perspective of this song.
Everybody Love You - I love gothic things. I read Anne Rice, watch horror movies and the feel of this song is sort of Euro-gothic. This song is one of my favorite songs from the album and probably, the biggest surprise. There are soo many good things about this song, that the chorus is the least important part. Her voice is perfect on this song and I just think the tinge of sadness to this song is great. I think this song has the best middle of any on the album.
Ghosts are Gone - When I heard this song the first time, I thought I've heard this before, somewhere.... The song is familiar sounding because its Led Zep. At first, I ignored this song, now it's one of my favorites. Her voice is great on this song and the ending harmonies are great. It's great to work too or clean house too. This might be a single.
You May Be The One - GREAT!!!!!!!! GREAT!!!!!!! May be the meatiest musically from the album. I could listen to this song 20 times in a row and have. Her voice is perfect for this song and so are her lyrics. LOVVVVEEEEEEE it!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a song any writer would be proud to have written.
Italian Summer - I really like this song. I can seee a bunch of drag queens lining up to perform this song. My favorite thing about it is the way it builds slowly and of course the climax at the end. It's a great contrast to some of the previous tracks.
Cheaper Than Free - Love their voices together, love the sentiment and appreciate the visual lyrics. A well written bittersweet song and nice album closer.
My overall take on the album so far is I love it. These are really good songs that I feel Stevie should of recorded sometime in the past and the fact, that she put them all together in one album just makes it almost sound like a greatest hits. Each track takes you to a different place and there is sooo much variety on it, there is no need to turn on the radio. It's a musical journey.
P.S. I like My Heart too, but I'm glad it got cut. It does not flow that well after Annabelle Lee. However, I like the new version. More dramatic and the instrumentation and new middle harmonies are flawless. Wish it would have more versus and less chorus though. It belongs on TISL.

I've been waiting, and waiting, all week, for my copy of In Your Dreams to come in the mail. I ordered it off WB website with the bonus track for "My Heart" because I loved the TISL-era version of that song...
But, it's been almost a week. And what a week it's been. And I've felt so left out not hearing it yet, and there's been a million and ten different things happening all week that today I was like, "Screw it - I'm listening to some new Stevie @#$!@ Nicks!"
So I went over to I-tunes and bought it. The way I reason, is at least I'll still be surprised with "My Heart" when I get the physical copy... And I'll still be thrilled reading all the lyrics (Hello new facebook statuses) But I just needed my Stevie!!!
Alls I can say is - WOW! I had high expectations after all the things people around here have been saying about them, and surprisingly - they've lived up to the album! I was amazed. I've only listened to it completely through once, going through my second time.
Favorites I would initially say would be
"For What It's Worth" "Wide Sargasso Sea" "You May Be The One"
--- But they're all so good! I'm sure my favorites will change within the next 24 hours.
I had mixed feelings with "Everybody Loves You" - as the clip that was realeased last year seeemed good. I always kind of thought Stevie/Dave had a weird harmony in it - but I thought maybe it was the demo... Then this kind of just... I don't know. I still have to get used to their voices together I guess.
And "Itallian Summer" was a bit megh in my books. I don't know quite what it is yet, but I'm hoping it does grow on me.
And Moonlight, nice reendition of Lady from the Mountain! I can telll the parts which were inspired by Twilight (Like that line about her sitting in the chair) I don't remmeber the line exactly per-say. But you know which I'm talking about
Overall. So stoked to have this collection of songs!!
"Right down in the middle of your dreams
Oooh In your dreams"

Glad you got hear it finally! Like a lot of us here, I love it overall. Funny that you mention the "meh" reaction to "Italian Summer"... I had the same reaction the first time. I think the overall melody didn't sound as romantic/interesting as I had expected. But if it's any comfort, now that I'm very familiar with the melody, I love the song! The arrangement is beautiful and her vocal builds nicely to the climactic final note.
I had a hard time getting used to "For What It's Worth" at first... it didn't grab me at all. Part of it was while I liked the production and the guitar riff, it almost felt like it didn't have a chorus... I think my mind interpreted the chorus as a bridge (to nowhere lol) the first few listens. I'm not one to pay any attention to lyrics (at least not until I'm very familiar with the song... even then, sometimes the message/meaning of a song will not hit me for YEARS lol!), but once I stopped and made myself read the lyrics while listening to the song, that one clicked for me... now I really, really like it! Who knows, with time it could become one of my favorites on the album!
It is really funny how our tastes evolve over time as we become more accustomed to the songs.

It's so true. I don't think I'll be able to decifer the songs completely till I have my physical copy. That's when I can be really analytical haha.
I wanna make a shout out to "New Orleans" as well!! Forgot about that until the second time it just played through.
Tha'ts funny FWIW didn't catch your ear right away - I don't know why it did for me. Maybe it's just cause it's completely unexpected.
And I love how Moonlight/Annabel Lee work into each other. I'm kinda disappointed that "My Heart" is going to be mashed between them on my physical copy -- hopefully it does justice!
Annabel Lee is a cool reworking. I'm not too familiar with the demo - it never really did much for me (hides --I know thats sacreligious) Haha.
Ohhh and how Lindsey's on "Soldiers Angel" - - I wonder if that's what Dave's tweet a while back about the reuinited "Buckingham Nicks" was about - when we all thought maybe it was a possibility of a final release of the album.
AHHHH! I just love this album. Thanks Stevie:woohoo:

Well it's about time -JK
I can barely put into words how much I love this album, but I will try :D
Upon first listen I immediately loved the title track, WSS, New Orleans, Moonlight, Annabel Lee, Ghost are Gone and You may be the One.
To a slightly lesser degree and after a few listens I liked Everybody Loves You and Soldiers Angel
I had heard Secret Love and CTF enough that I liked em enough to not skip them
The songs that had to grow on me were For What It Is Worth and Italian Summer. Which was weird because a lot of reviews had mentioned them as favorites. FWIW was a little repetative to me which is something I appreciate that Stevie doesnt usually do in a song. It is still not a favorite but I like it. Now Italian Summer has grown on me big time. I just love the way it builds up to the big finish.
I can't wait till they release a new single. Im hoping for Moonlight or IYD

My impressions with Itallian Summer now, are I see it in a different light then at first. The first time I listened to it, I stopped the album cause I had to leave for a while, and picked up from there because I stopped it after YMBTO
But after listening to them back to back, it gave Itallian Summer a bit more of a dramatic effect......... If that makes sense? Still not my favorite, but I see the appeal more now:thumbsup:
In Your Dreams (the song) is decent, but I can never keep it in my mind long enough to remember how it goes. and Secret Love and Cheaper than Free I've always liked. Secret Love, I'm actually liking even more with the sequence of the album for some reason

Congrats on finally getting it !! When i listen to Italian Summer, i kind of put myself on the balcony of that gorgeous hotel in Italy. The song has a visual impact that really grabs you. I really can't remember the last song of Stevie's that was quite that visual for me. It's a really great song to listen to with your eyes closed ! ;) My fav. today ( it changes daily ) is New Orleans. The chorus is fantasic, it's so easy to sing along to. Not to mention the lyrics themselves !! It's a powerful little song. I could go on and on. I am glad you're finally enjoying this beautiful work of art !

--- But they're all so good!
And "Itallian Summer" was a bit megh in my books. I don't know quite what it is yet, but I'm hoping it does grow on me.
Overall. So stoked to have this collection of songs!!
Glad to hear you finally got to listen. I'm not a major fan of Stevie doing "Italian Summer" either--in my mind that song belongs to another generation of singers . . . like Connie Francis, maybe. I'm not a fan of that song's follow up: "Cheaper Than Free." She has so many other songs that are stronger lyrically than those two.
On the other hand, I saw the '93 movie "Wide Sargasso Sea" and Stevie's song captures the feelings of that film brilliantly. Stevie's "Annabel Lee," made me proud of her. (even if the ending does go on a bit too long at the end) Overall, it's definitely a great outting for Stevie.

@Annabell Lee - What you said about Itallian Summer being so visual is how I feel about New Orleans! I can just see it all in my head when she's singing it.
@Tango - I personally love Cheaper Than Free! It's really simple. In fact, it's so simple I'm kind of surprised Stevie wrote it haha. It's so straightforward, especially for her writing! But I do like it. I guess I wouldn't say it's my favorite on the album, but I thought it was a good closer.
I'm still trying to get into Annabell Lee. I don't mind it, but it just hasn't hit me yet I don't think...
And "Ghosts Are Gone". It's ok, but I was expecting something more Fall From Grace-esque from what everyone's been building it up to be. But it's still good.
And I still can't get over "For What It's Worth"!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahh... Favorite cut from the entire CD. I showed it to my friend today, and he was like "Oh yeah, it's kind of got a Jewel vibe to it." And then I thought about it, and I realized he was right... Haha. Not that tha'ts a bad thing, I like Jewel's work. But I can see the similarities.

Well I was unable to post a review when the album was released and I have too much school stuff going on this week to do a track by track review, but next week or so I will give an in depth review of what I think. For now however, I just want to say that I am loving the new album! I think the only way it could have been made perfect is if they would have dropped Cheaper Than Free and ended the album with China Doll. Also, I wish they wouldn't have faded out the intro to Everybody Loves You, it would be way more powerful if it stayed at the same volume and went silent for a split second and then came back with her singing. The fade makes it seem kinda disconnected.

Well school is over so here is my in depth review!
Album as a whole:
Love it! Being that she had the same team of producers from start to finish and there aren't any WTF tracks, it is definitely her most cohesive album since Bella Donna. It is new and edgy, yet classic, familiar Stevie Nicks at the same time. That being said, I don't think this is the BEST album she has ever done or the best one since BD either. It ranks high up there, but let's not let the chiffon go to our heads. Another thing I wanted to mention was the vocal. I see everyone trashing the TISL vocal compared to this, but I'm wondering if this is because they are just so excited from the newness or if it has been forever since they listened to TISL. Her vocal isn't really better on either album as a whole, but rather certain songs on certain albums. Yes, the vocal on Secret Love is way better than the vocal on Every Day, but the vocal on Sorcerer blows Soldier's Angel out of the water. Both albums have songs with amazing vocals and both have songs with average vocals, so that isn't one thing I am creaming my pants about.
Individual songs:
Secret Love- Well I must admit, I overdosed on this song when we got it back in January. However, after the revelation that the lyrics are "Must secret loves secretly die?" I have found a strange new love for it.
For What It's Worth- Love it. It is tied with YMBTO as my favorite on the album! Not going to lie... it made me cry. And NOTHING makes me cry.
In Your Dreams- It took a few listens to get into this one, but I'm digging it now. I love the lyrics and its upbeat tempo. However, it definitely is no Edge, Stand Back, or I Can't Wait.
Wide Sargasso Sea- Love this one as well! The music is very tribal sounding and the way she sings it is very different but amazing. My only complaint on this song is that she says, "you'll remember THIS, you fell to the ground when you saw THIS".
New Orleans- Another one I love! Even the Anne Rice lyric! The only thing I don't love is the way she ends the song. Something about that last "in the city of tears lies the city ghost" irks me.
Moonlight-!!!! So glad she finally did LFTM! Her vocal is really amazing and the new lyrics are great! I especially love the last bit "She's laying on the floor in silent pain..." and her little Ahhhhooooooohhhh at the end :] I do wish she would have included my favorite verse tho
Annabel Lee- I was really skeptical when I heard this was going to be on the new album, but I think they did a really good job with it! I do think the "I lie down" gets a little tiring tho.
Soldier's Angel- Sometimes I love this song, sometimes I skip it. I'm not a huge fan of the vocal and the song gets kind of repetitive. But at times, it can be very moving. I think they could do an amazing video for this song with clips of her and Linds in the studio and then actual clips from the war.
Everybody Loves You- The intro to this makes my day! I just wish they wouldn't have faded the intro out. Will someone please do an edit where the intro doesn't fade?
Ghosts Are Gone- I had really high hopes for this song, but it didn't live up to my expectations. It sounds like something I'd hear in a roadhouse. But it is growing on me. I especially love the last half.
You May Be The One- Tied with FWIW as my favorite! Love the bluesy feel and the lyrics!
Italian Summer- Also love this one! Love the atmosphere and the huge buildup to the end!
Cheaper Than Free- I like it, but I still wish it would have remained on Dave's album. I still think this album would have been perfect had Stevie pulled out China Doll and ended the album with that, but oh well...

I know it's past the initial feeling but I've given it some more listens and I've still come to the same conclusion - I just don't love it :(. I attribute this to a few things in particular:
I'm totally too emotionally attached to the older stuff and have a hard time latching on to these new songs so far. I just don't like the style/genre of a lot of the songs although I think they are still decent tracks. As I've said many times I like more electric guitar, synths, rock and roll (not the bluesy/country-ish kind). I really really like Annabell Lee and Wide Sargasso sea and think those have the possibility for me to become passionate about but it's gonna take some time. I'll stop talking about it now because I most certainly am not trying to rain on anyone's Stevie parade, just my opinion.

After just a few listens, I've got to say......it's my least favorite album.....by FAR!!!!
There's just nothing that REALLY jumps out at me, and I CERTAINLY hope she doesn't work with Dave again....the production is just "Eh!" for me! (I am interested to see the production on the new Joss Stone, though!).
I'm anxious to start listening to it in the car, where I can really soak it up!

This is her best album/ties with Belladonna, IMO. Dave helped her express herself and say all the things she wanted to say with this album.
Favorite Tracks:
#1: You May Be The One (love the bluesy vibe, this is her "Say Goodbye" to Lindsey, IMO, or maybe a Fall From Grace Part II)
#2: Moonlight (love that it starts with Lady from the Mountain lyrics)
#3: Wild Sargasso Sea (Sums up the book/movie perfectly)
This is the album she has always wanted to make, but has never had the right circumstances around her. She has often been her own worse enemy, but I do believe that her ghosts are finally gone. I will be heartbroken if she does not tour. I need to hear some of these new song live. Annabel Lee, Ghosts Are Gone, and hopefully You May Be The One would be awesome.

I wondered that as well...if it was about Lindsey - or maybe Joe.
I relate to it a lot myself...I think it's sad being able to look back and see the people I was secretly in love with (or not so secretly in some cases). Putting them on such a pedestal at my own expense. At least I can laugh about it now, and know that everything turned out the way it should have.
I used to love you...See light inside you
But I sure don't anymore, scumbag.

Despite listening a gazillion times, I still am not over the newness of this album; it's so hard to make any kind of contextual judgment this soon. However, what does seem apparent to me is that this really is two very different albums (7 songs each) mashed together- one bluesy country rock, the other straight up pop:
The pop album:
-Secret Love
-New Orleans
-Moonlight
-Annabel Lee
-My Heart
-Everybody Loves You
-Italian Summer
The bluesy country rock album:
-For What It's Worth
-In Your Dreams
-Wide Sargasso Sea
-Soldier's Angel
-The Ghosts Are Gone
-You May Be the One
-Cheaper than Free
One thing I love about this album is that it is so diverse- it's like a very satisfying meal with many different courses. However, dessert seems to be served right in the middle of the meal with the immaculate trifecta of "New Orleans," "Moonlight" and "Annabel Lee" all beautifully strung together- each song very special in its own way, but complementing each other at the same time. Although I loved TISL, I have to admit that I was a bit put off by the way her vocals were recorded/mixed- you always got the sense that her voice was being put through some kind of a filter or digital effect. I love the fact that Stevie's voice is mostly front and center here, and not drowning in tons of reverb and autotune. "Soldier's Angel" is the rawest thing she has ever done; it's almost as if she is sitting in front of you singing this song. And I love the fact that you can hear the hum of the pickups on Lindsey's guitar too; it gives it all a kind of rough demo feel, which is perfect for the subject matter. On paper the poem sounds flighty and grandiose. But the vocal she delivered was perfect- gritty, full of pain, terse. She wasn't going for "sad beauty" or melodrama here... she was serving Johnny Cash Folsom Prison realness.
Oh, another thing... am I the only one to detect a strong Exile on Mainstreet-era Rolling Stones vibe on "The Ghosts Are Gone?"
If I had to choose a weak spot, I would have to say it is "Wide Sargasso Sea." I am really trying to like this song. I love the premise- it's classic Stevie to deliver the meaning of a song in such poetic but concise terms ("They drew a line in the sand... just because.") But it is just one of thse songs that kicks into second gear, but doesn't quite go anywhere after that. I just think it had the potential to be one of those incendiary epic songs full of wailing guitars and big drums at the end. I mean, she burned his house down for crikeys sake!

My feelings on IYD haven't really changed. I'd still put it in the top 3 as far as Stevie's solo albums go, and I still think it's better than TISL, which can be a little "soupy" production-wise. Her vocals are also better on IYD (not that they're bad on TISL). Tracks that I've been playing over & over:
Secret Love (I'm more into this now than when it first came out)
In Your Dreams
Wide Sargasso Sea
Annabel Lee
My Heart
and to a somewhat lesser extent:
Moonlight
For What it's Worth
New Orleans

Ghosts Are Gone- It sounds like something I'd hear in a roadhouse.
You make that sound like hearing something in a roadhouse is a BAD thing.
(from a musician who gigs 90% of the time in roadhouses) I find that pretty damned offensive.

I've had this album on non-stop. It's holding up really well under intense listening. There still aren't any clunkers on this album for me, and "My Heart" has started to grow on me although I still consider it the weakest song on the album.....but that's "weakest" in a definite relative sense, since everything on this album is amazing.
"Moonlight" is still my absolute favorite. My second favorite kept shifting. Started out being "Wide Sargasso Sea", then "New Orleans", then "Everybody Loves You", then "Annabel Lee". "Annabel Lee" seems to have conquered the #2 spot.
None of the songs have diminished but several songs have grown on me more than when I first heard them: "For What It's Worth" seems to get better every time I hear it. There's a definite gravitas to that song that one might miss at first. "You May Be The One" and "Ghosts Are Gone" have gotten better to my ears as well.
In terms of the album package, I like it a lot. The album cover is very cool and it fits in with the mood and sound of the music. I think the "Stevie Nicks" logo is awesome. The "In Your Dreams" font is a little simple but it's okay. The Trouble In Shangri-La album cover is still better, but In Your Dreams probably has the best "Stevie Nicks" logo.

I like the album and production and vocals overall but something is missing - I cannot find the song on IYD that will bring me back to it often in future. Like Street Angel, it seems to lack the Stevie moment that the other albums have provided. IYD is a technically excellent album, is all I can say.
Ok, I'm on my 4th run through of IYD & I like it. It's good , but not IMO, as good as her earlier work. I got the B&N version with the My Heart bonus. I'm glad I did because I like My Heart. It's a pretty romantic song which I like. The only songs that I don't like are New Orleans, Cheaper Than Free & Annabel Lee. I may be in the minority for not liking Annabel Lee, & I can't explain why I don't like it, I just don't. Italian Summer is a borderline song for me. It can go either way. Secret Love is getting that way, too, because Stevie is just singing this song live & nothing else right now. The songs that jumped out at me the very first time I heard them were the fast tempo songs, In Your Dreams, Wide Sargasso Sea, & Ghosts Are Gone. I probably like Soldier's Angel because Lindsey is singing on there, otherwise I don't know if I would have like it. So this is my two cents worth, For What It's Worth. :D

I've listened to the whole album straight through about 12 times now. I still feel it's a great album. I didn't like "Annabel Lee" at all when I initially heard it...in fact it took me a while to warm up to it. Now it's one of my favorite songs on the record. It still goes on and on a little too long...but that's okay because the ending is my favorite part to harmonize to.
"My Heart" is a nice song and I love it...but I can see why it was left off the album. It really doesn't mesh well with the rest of the songs. It kind of interrupts the flow and pace of the album in my opinion. Does that make sense? I got the Warners version but I'm thinking about going out and buying the regular version without "My Heart" so I can keep it in the car and rock out.
"WSS" has also grown on me tremendously. LOVE IT!
I still can't get with "New Orleans", "Ghosts Are Gone" and "Cheaper Than Free". I thought they would grow on me...and maybe someday they will (as that happens a lot with Stevie's music) but right now...skip...
My top favorites are still "Moonlight" (I play it at least twice a day, before and after work), "Everybody Loves You", "In Your Dreams", "Italian Summer", "You May Be The One" & "Annabel Lee"...in that order!
The other three "Secret Love", "For What It's Worth" and "Soldier's Angel" are also great...and I never get tired of listening to those either.
I'm not sure if there's a point to this post, but I guess I just want to say that I think this is one of the best things she's done EVER!!! Definitely in my top 3 Stevie albums of all time!

I agree. For me, though, the album is perfect, just a seemless work of art. The songs all compliment each other. Stevie's lyrics and voice surprise and challenge me many, many times throughout In Your Dreams.
This album brings up a lot of emotions in me. Longing, sadness, compassion, anger, joy... it's just fascinating to me how Stevie is able to write songs that still affect me so deeply. As much as I love her songs on Trouble In Shangri-la and Say You Will, only a few touched me personally in an emotional way: "Love Changes", "Say You Will", "Love Is"...
In Your Dreams is just this weird, cool, unsettling entity, a complete work of art that I'm so glad Stevie has released.

I don't think I have had enough time with the album yet, but I'll go ahead and give my thoughts as of now. This is probably my fave solo album of hers since I don't skip any songs as of now. That could change though, anytime.
Secret Love - This song has grown on me. I find myself singing or humming it throughout the day sometimes. I still cannot believe the lyrics are "Must secret loves secretly die." instead of "My secret love secretly died." LOL Makes the song TOTALLY different! Reminds me of us Lindsey lovers who were dumbfounded at the "Twist of Fate" versus "Right Place to Fade" thing. Heh. Cute song and nice first single.
For What It's Worth - Stevie's country roots shinin' through! I really like this one. It's got a good hook and melody to it.
In Your Dreams - A rockin' song! Really enjoying the melodies on this album.
Wide Sargasso Sea - This one took me a bit but I really like it now. My fave part is the ending where the music drops down and she goes "You may have forgotten that....you may have forgotten that.....but you'll never forget that...KISS." Oooh, LOVE IT!
New Orleans - I just recently went to NOLA for the first time and hearing this song is interesting in that perspective. I DID get a room in New Orleans. I DID NOT sing in the streets of the French Quarter (LOL). I DID wear beads. I DID walk down Bourbon Street. I DID NOT brush by Anne Rice, but did see her old house there and I DID buy a mask with feathers. ;) Cool song.
Moonlight - Hmm...I'm conflicted by this one. I've seen the movies and read the Twilight books. Not amazing...books or the movies, but they do paint an interesting world. I can see why Stevie was drawn to them. I wish she hadn't turned LFTM into something in connection with Twilight, but oh well. Although, I LOVE the title of the song because if you look in my signature, that is Mick and Beth from the TV show, Moonlight, which is my fave show of all time. Although, I'm sure very few have heard of it. It also was about a vampire and human falling in love.
Annabel Lee - I think the song goes on too long, but it's grown on me a bit. That ending needs to be trimmed, IMO. Interesting to hear this after hearing the demo all these years, like with Secret Love and LFTM.
Soldier's Angel - She says the word soldier too much, but that's MY gripe. Otherwise, it's a very stern, harsh delivery which goes PERFECTLY with the lyrics. I think of a soldier standing there looking forward and not moving as she's singing it. VERY powerful stuff and Lindsey's guitar and vocal are superb. Not really sure it fits on this album, but hey, it's her indulgence. I know she wants people to hear this most of all.
Everybody Loves You - I think this is my fave song on the album. The melody as it opens just hits me like a ton of bricks. "Everybody loves you but you're so alone.." LOVE THAT! Fantastic song.
The Ghosts Are Gone - Another rocker! Interesting melodies too. I like the repeated "The girls went home."
You May Be the One - Wow, I cannot think of the melody of this song right now. Hmm...I'm reading the lyrics, but cannot grasp onto what the melody is. Methinks I need to listen to this one some more. Yikes.
Italian Summer - What a visual!! I love this song! It's like you are there WITH Stevie in Italy on a balcony. Awesome!
Cheaper Than Free - I know I'm in the minority on this, but I like this cute little song. It's probably better off on Dave's album, like everyone is saying, but since it is here, I'll go with it. I just like it. It's hummable. BUT....dumb lyrics: "More exciting than high fashion? High passion." WTH? LOL

Oh, today I can't get this out of my mind:
"I used to love you
See light inside of you...
I used to dream that
You were an angel...
You were an angel..."
To me, that's almost the most Classic Stevie on the album.

I absolutely LOVE You May Be The One. It's my favorite song on the CD right now (my favorites fluctuate). I love the way she says, "...you broke my heart" the second time. I can see this song being mainstreamed because it's easy to relate to (everyone loves and needs a good break up song from time to time), the lyrics are straight forward and sung beautifully.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of dislike for this song over the years but it really grew on me considering I don't usually like that kind of music (bluesy). I wouldn't consider it a favorite but I really really like it. It's also a treat to hear her w/Melissa Ethridge but I swear YMBTO totally reminds me of it.

It's not so much a breakup song for me as it is a song about the ones that got away. Sometimes you pine over someone for a long time...wondering what might have been - longing for some perceived happiness that seemingly should have been. I am guilty of this, too often, in fact, and it' s been cathartic to let go of all that emotional baggage - and in some cases - hurt and rejection that I've held on to for years.
I was a starving child...but not anymore.

Can somebody please respond to my post re: Somebody Stand By Me? :sorry:
I see the similarities of TMBTO to SSBM specifically, but not to the album production as a whole. Don Was who produced SSBM generally lends a bluesy roots vibe to the records he's involved with. While Dave & Glen delicately produce with more polish, sophistication & variety without over cooking things.
Somebody Stand By Me & YMBTO share the same bluesy feel, but other than that, "You May Be The One" is far and away superior a song in every aspect. The structure and pacing are perfect, whereas SSBM drags a bit. The lyrics and vocals are killer! The chorus has a stronger hook, and not only does YMBTO sound bluesy, It also retains a country-rock flair. It reminds me of classic sounding Eagles songwriting. It may be my 2nd favorite song on the whole record right behind Moonlight. No question that's it the best Stewart/Nicks collaboration hands down on the whole record.

I see the similarities of TMBTO to SSBM specifically, but not to the album production as a whole. Don Was who produced SSBM generally lends a bluesy roots vibe to the records he's involved with. While Dave & Glen delicately produce with more polish, sophistication & variety without over cooking things.

Interesting about Don Was, I didn't know that. Thank you for responding Christopher :).

Thanks to you Ledgies I now really like this song! The words totally describe the last year of my love life to a T. Gawd, I'd love to dedicate this song to a certain person.
I know you've struggled a bit with the new album, but once an emotional connection is made to the lyrics, it gets much easier. :xoxo:

I've always thought her vocal on SSBM was atrocious.
OMG me too. I hate her vocal on this song. It's like she hacked the song. Reminds me of the demos of My Heart and Too Far from Texas. It's like rocks scraping together or something.
Thank god they redid My Heart. Faith Hill does a great version of SSBM, but I really think this song is another Sheryl Crow imatation. I never really liked the song itself that well. You May Be the One is actually a good song and Stevie's voice fits beautifully.

So now that YMBTO is my new favorite on the album it's morphing into Love's a Hard Game to Play when I sing it in my head instead of SSBM today! I know I'm driving you guys crazy but do you hear any similarity between YMBTO and LAHGTP?

I guess so, but I'm having a problem with the vocals on the songs you are choosing. Her vocal on Love's a Hard Game reaks! I would of never put that on a greatest hits or recorded it like that. I don't like either songs, but both are sorta bluesy. I LOVE YMBTO! Harmonies are great on it and her voice sounds perfect on it.

I could not get over that she put that song on her greatest hits along with Sometimes its a Bitch and Desert Angel. She really must of extra doses of Klonopolin that month. horrible choices

I love all three of those songs.
Coming from me, though, that's nothing special. I honestly love all of Stevie's released work....EXCEPT I Still Miss Someone[/I and sometimes I hate [I]The Nightmare, but other than that....I'm a huge fan.

The 3 "new" songs for Timespace were all atrocious. Wasn't Stevie strong-armed into recording Sometimes it's a Bitch & Love's a Hard Game? She was nearing the nadir of her solo career with those. Ick.

I just got the idea to create a playlist with Battle of the Dragon, Desert Angel, Illume, and Soldier's Angel. Doesn't that sound uplifting? :]

Yes indeed .I believe she stated that if she didn't record the awful Bon Jovi and Poison covers she was informed that her career would be over and sadly she was so zonked out that she didn't put up much of a protest.

You could also add Stand Back to the mix and just tell yourself it's the civil war version.
Or you could just play all of Street Angel...

It's not so much a breakup song for me as it is a song about the ones that got away.
For me, it's a blinders off song. You wake up disabused, illusions gone. And for me, rather than even saying the relationship is over (because maybe it is and maybe it's not), it says, "my fantasies are over. I'm not putting you on a pedestal anymore." So, what the singer has lost is not even the person, so much as her dreams about who that person was. Kind of an end of innocence thing. It's a growing up and pushing aside the fairy tales song. And her delivery is biting and beautiful.

That interpretation immediately brought these lyrics into my head:
"The dream was never over, no
The dream was only lost"
It's funny how her lyrics seem to flow together and you form your own little stories based upon them and that's what she wants - to create a little fantasy world for each of us.
Aaah, the power of Stevie Nicks...

I think it's interesting that the phrase "in your dreams" can be said two ways. One is very ethereal and poetic, a la Stevie. The other is sarcastic and biting. I think the album is a lot like that, too-- there are pop songs that are quintessentially Stevie but there's some really bluesy sassy tacks too.
