The video is nice - still not sold on the song but it's definitely not as country feeling as people were suspecting - kind of bummed this closes the album as those have typically been some of my favorite Stevie tracks and this just doesn't feel like it measures up from first listen (Stevie's never gone for such an obvious rhyme scheme - I mean couplets - REALLY?). That said the video is great.

The video is adorable--liked it far more than I expected to.
Kind of regrettable that this was the one they chose to release, though. As much as I enjoyed it, I would have wanted a free itunes vid to show people what she's still capable of musically. And this...doesn't. We all know from the sizzle reel that she can do so much better.
Maybe that's overly negative. It really is a cute vid and decent tune, and it's nice to see Stevie so clearly enjoying herself. Well done, Dave!

Idk. I love that they gave us this, but I cannot seem to figure out their motivations. Not only have they refused to give us the Secret Love video, even tho they have already released the single, they then turn around and give us a video for this without it being a single. Not only that, but they give it to us for free! *mass confusion*

I totally agree! My head is just spinning trying to figure out their marketing plan. I have a degree in Music Business and have interned all over the music industry. Granted, it was in Nashville, but still. Typically with an album release there is a formula labels follow. I'm so confused. haha :]

Such a simple, yet effective song. And could Stevie's voice sound more beautiful?? Sigh.
By the way, I noticed that iTunes is offering a deluxe version of 'In Your Dreams.' Same 13 tracks as the standard album, but it includes the videos for "Cheaper Than Free" and "Secret Love."

Wow...not sure if i love it but I DO like it. If it were Stevie singing by herself these lyrics would be more trite than they are...but sung as a Duet with Dave this simple tune brings out the best of their voices. Accompanied by that fun video showing good times had by all makes it all the warmer. The Beginning of the song is pretty dreadful but it gets better as it goes along.

Just initial reactions:
1. Dave Stewart is a terrible filmmaker
2. It doesn't matter when we get that final lingering look at Stevie... In truth, I cried. He captures her essence in that moment. Or he gave her the space to reveal it.
3. I think the song is really pretty. I agree with the Ledgie who said the line about "being needed" was a deep thing--especially from Stevie Nicks, a profound restatement--refinement--of her "freedom" philosophy.

Does anyone else wonder if there was any rekindling of a romantic involvement (whether it went beyond the recording of the album or not) between Stevie and Dave? Our girl does have a history of hooking up with her producers... all that intense creative energy and such.
I always got the feeling that because of the brevity of their earlier fling (one night according to the story I heard attributed to him) that Dave always wished it had developed more (back then). Just wondering..

the antithesis of freedom is being needed. to settle down into love is to give up your freedom to be needed by another. to me it's very touching and evocotive of true love.

but i was replying to someone who said it was dull and antithetical. i think the point of the lyric was to be antithetical. you choose freedom or being needed. i guess a person could have both. but to truly be needed, you must gived up freedom. you can't traipse off to your next gig, or your next club party or your next night out. if you are needed, that is more important than those things.

This is exactly how I feel, too. I'm now more nervous than ever about the substance of this album. Honestly, none of the clips I heard on the sizzle reel reached out to me... and the country fried Cheaper Than Free just utterly depresses me. Don't get me wrong, the vocals I've heard from this album so far are superb. It's just the lyrics and production which are highly suspect. I'm hoping when I hear the full songs my fears will be quelled. :)

Well I pondered for a bit to at least find something nice to say about the song. While I don't particularly care for the lyrics... I do like the way they gave it a fresh/ earthly folk sound. Plus I think J.S is slightly right in a sense. Less pontification on her part is more foretelling in how comfortable Stevie is at this juncture in her life. More concrete than obscure. That is what scares me about this song. Could this be a way of her telling us fans that the illusion is over and she is hanging it up? Well in that case they were smart to close the album with such a safe and clearly defined narrative.

Well it lacks that clairvoyance I am used to. For some reason I feel like the simplicity and very compliant nature of the song must scream a bigger message. She is just too candid even as you watch the video w/ CTF. For the other songs we still get shrouds of mystery.. judging by the snippets from the trailer. To me the coziness of this song screams retirement.

I'm thankful for this song. It sounds like Bella Donna to me, very After the Glitter Fades, and Highwayman. Sometimes I get sick of all the mystery. I want to understand what she is singing about. HER VOICE SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! better than 10 years ago. Dave did a great job at brining out a great vocal.

Lol how can a Stevie fan grow tired of the mystery? That is a huge staple/ trademark of hers! For me the song accomplishes its goal of being straight forward. The song just doesn't have the nuances and wild ride trajectories that is Bella Donna. Even the ballads from those gave a little more depth. Give me a gamble and less of "The wheels on the bus."

Months ago I said I was so worried about the Stewart-Nicks collaboration. "Secret Love" gave me some hope. But "Cheaper than free" sounds so old fashioned, so affected... The same with that Italian Summer piece we could hear... These two songs are taking back all those worries again. C'mon, brilliant duo, we're on 2011 ("Wild Sargasso Sea", maybe?)!!

Sure it's not fair, and it's something I can't understand.
One more example: the UK release date has changed and now is June 27! Why? Germany date changed from April 29 to May 6. And here in Spain... I have no idea. Maybe the CD will be available only as an import CD (higher price), so I'll buy it on Amazon US and, this time, I'll get it first on iTunes on May 3.

I worked last night (10pm to 6am) and saw this thread when I got home lol...I immediately hopped on iTunes and downloaded the video. I love the video. Stevie looks GREAT and it looks like she's enjoying herself which is really nice to see. The song is okay, I think it needs to grow on me a bit. I like the instrumentation, but the lyrics are kinda meh and hokey.
PS...did anyone see on the iTunes store they have the Deluxe edition for pre-order. You get 13 tracks plus the "Cheaper Than Free" video and "Secret Love" video.

I think you'll like it just fine. :)
I really like the song, actually. The lyrics are simple, but I don't find them particularly trite at all - maybe y'all are just jaded. :p
"The one condition of love is that there are none at all" - now *that's* trite. "Maybe love will change your mind": trite, naive, and codependent.
This is a really sweet, simple song. It's not "And the lady's feeling just like the moon that she loves," but I don't think Stevie needs to stay in that "mystical gypsy" box all the time.
Also, the song reminds me more of Rose Garden (although this is better) than ATGF.

not every Stevie song has to be mythic and profound. let her have a whimsical trifle now and again. it sounds fun. they seem to be having fun. just enjoy the song for what it is. a trifle is good from time to time.
Amen, I think people sometimes expect Stevie to live up to their own expectations of her instead of appreciating the fact that she isn't going to be "mythical and profound" in every song she does. I think the lyrics are straight forward and extremely easy to relate to, which makes Stevie seem much more human to me.

Why be a fan anymore then if you can't accept her new material? Honestly, some of the Ledgies amaze me at how quick they are to pass judgement on Stevie. She would be so disappointed in how much of a pedestal you put her on. Stevie is in the golden (or "twilight") years of her career. Please accept the fact that she may not be the mystical "witch-like" darling earth girl that we once knew and loved all the time. She's "growing older too". Her thought, attitudes, and tastes change. Change with her and just appreciate the fact she still makes quality music.

I really appreciate the way she's doing right now. I think she's singing better than ever. I know the lady is almost 63 and I'm not waiting for her to shout at the end of Rhiannon. I have only to watch the "Love is" rendition on MSG to fall at her feet. But I don't like "Cheaper..." at all, as I didn't like "After the glitter", most of TOSOTM or SA before. And I never liked DStewart, nor the man or his music, and I don't think he's the better influence. But I loved "Secret Love" (God will forgive them for such an end of a song) and I eagerly wait for the new CD.

"Rose Garden," "That's Alright," "After the Glitter Fades," and "Too Far From Texas" are actually some of my favorite Stevie tunes. I think they fit her voice better, especially today when she can't reach the high notes or be arching her voice to be like Janis. It also highlights her range, which gives her more character than just as a rock goddess.
At this stage in her life and career, I think she is releasing a product that she deeply cares about and loves. I do not think she cares that it be commercially-viable or that it's a checklist of fan demands. True artists should in NO WAY be confined to please just their fans. It should be about the passion and soul of the art, not about making others happy. That is strictly a by-product of really good art, as are sales.

Completely agree with that line and borrowing from you True fans should in NO WAY be confined to please just the artist. We can all disagree its healthy. Am just baffled at how some people are so cruel to others on the board at times. It is alright to talk about the music but to treat someone else poorly and tell them they perhaps shouldn't be a fan is absurd!

I love the song on account of the fact that it's real easy to substitute one's own juvenile lyrics with the the real lyrics. An example:

WOW, this board was getting so intense for awhile, that I couldn't stop reading posts to actually watch the video. BUT. Now that I have...
When I heard the clip, I was SOOO let down. But after hearing/watching the song in it's entirety, I kind of like it. Stevie looks totes-adorbs in the video, and the production of the song is pretty tight.
I WOULD however prefer this to be on Dave's album and not Stevie's. From the bits I've heard from the Blackbird Diaries, it fits perfectly. From the snippets we've heard of IYD, it doesn't seem like it follows the continuity of the record.
But thats just me.

I've listened to it maybe 4 times now, trying to get the lyrics--lyrics matter, especially if it's not something with a driving beat that grabs the listener. I'm not certain I have all the lyrics correct. Can someone check me on this:
What’s cheaper than free? You and me.
What’s better than alone? Going home.
What does money not buy? You and I.
What’s not to feel when love is real?
What’s faster than a fast car? A beating heart.
What’s deeper than a deep well? The love into which I fell.
More important than freedom? Being needed.
More exciting than high fashion? High passion.
What’s brighter than a smile? You child. You child.
What’s brighter than a smile? You child. You child. You child. You child.
What’s warmer than a sun-drenched land? Your hand.
Your hand. Your hand.
I don't quite understand what to do with this song--to me it's kind of pedestrian. Sweet, in it's own way, but it has no excitement or inspiration. Faster than a fast car? A beating heart? Maybe in a dangerous arrhythmia. Can someone bring in the defibrillator.

I think that's why this song is so effective, which sometimes you don't see (or hear) unless you are living in a situation where the lyrics hit home. This song pretty much sums up what true love is about, I don't care how simple it sounds, sometimes simple is the best.

I am trying to put into context on how I feel about Stevie's new music and music from her past. Watching 'Cheaper Than Free' brought me to tears because Stevie is very happy now without any doubt. To compare it to' Doing The Best I Can' is so striking. Back in those days I was in denial that Stevie was going through some very tough periods in her life. To let all that in would have broke my heart even more. Now, Stevie has found her way out of that and I am very happy for her. Ironically today I am having a few tough moments myself. To sum it up , if this music / album fails to reach many ears I will take solace in the fact that Stevie is in a happy place now and that makes me happy.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AreMVWFAQhY

Oh I understand. I just think the song has already fulfilled a need for me, the way Has Anyone Ever Written did in the past when I was depressed. I hope the song is a hit, but I don't care because I have encoded it emotionally and the song has done its job.

Ok - I finally got to watch this now. I'm not too keen to be honest. Stevie's vocals are great and she looks brilliant in the video, it's especially good to see her smiling so much, but the song is a bit of a dirge. Even as a proper whisky soaked old time country ballad I'm not sure how well it works. As well as overly cheesy lyrics there's no real melody to speak of. I thought there was going to be when the track kicked in a bit more but it just doesn't really go anywhere.
I'm also not a fan of Dave's voice, although I usually always like his production so still have high hoped for the rest of In Your Dreams (very high in fact!)
It would have been well placed as a curio duet on Dave's album, a single B-side or a bonus track on Stevie's - but as a full album track and possibly a single, I dunno...

Opinions are varying on this SO much! That's what s great about this board. We're able to get others' opinions and maybe give them some (even subconscious) consideration. Even though many of us are unmovable in our opinions. And that's fine too! We're all entitled. That's why we're here.
It may be first thing in the morning for me, but I wasn't expecting much when I hit the play button on first watch for the video. I've never been wild about the clip. And watching the video initially, again - not too impressed. It's a subdued and very light track, so of course the video isn't going to have the grandiose spectacle some of us might have been hoping for. I know we all love our visual counterparts to Steve's songs - especially these days as she hasn't made a video in a long time - but this video was a snooze to me. Too documentary in style. And I find the "acting" between Dave and Stevie gimmicky. I'm prepared to be beaten upside the head, but again, we all have the right to our opinions.
That said, I listened to just the audio immediately afterward without the video, and have to say that the song itself is greater than I had hoped it would be. I therefore think that this track would have been better suited for just an album track without a video release.
I'm keeping in mind, too, that this is clearly the next song that Stevie wanted released. That's the direction she wanted to go in after Secret Love, and that's her prerogative.
I was just really hoping that the next thing we'd be seeing would have more energy, especially after the relative lightness of Secret Love (though I do love it). We know that she's MORE than capable of still turning out songs that have attitude and that chug along like a heart attack (what we're heard so far of Moonlight and Wide Sargasso Sea - those would have been GREAT choices for the next single/video). We all know that she's still a rocker. It just would be nice if the non-Ledgies and non-die-hard fans out there could have something released to prove that too. She can do it all and still has the rock energy in spades - I want the world to know it!

So many interesting opinions this morning...
I'm loving the video, loving the song - it's been stuck in my head all morning. This is going to be such a great album, I think!
Cheaper Than Free is no TISL or I Can't Wait or Rooms On Fire, but I don't think every Stevie song needs to be a spawling, epic tale of lost romance and treacherous love with lyrics that take days to decipher. Some of her simplest tunes rank among my favorite - The Highwayman & Storms for example.
I'm not hearing the 'country' vibe that seems to bother some fans. I really don't hear it at all. There is no western twang, which for me is an essential part of country music. I hear more of a simple guitar/rock ballad like Landslide, with less clouds and more sunshine.
Based on what I had read over the past couple months...and having NOT heard any of the clips or snippets that were talked about, I was really expecting this song to be another Two Kinds of Love....another That Made Me Stronger....or another Desert Angel, you know - an actual dud.

I love the song more than the video.
In fact, I was making the bed this morning, playing the video but not watching it, just listening to the song. Really love the simplicity of it all.
I don't find it lyrically trite...I mean honestly...the song Landslide has very simple lyrics and one could find it silly and trite.

I agree with this. Fair enough, it's obviously up to her. I do love Secret Love! That's why I'm still confident about the album. Stevie has also said she never wanted to be an actress...

I don't need Western twang for it to be country - Stevie would sound terrible doing such a thing! She doesn't have it in After The Glitter Fades and that's one of her most countryish tunes. For me it's more about the instrumentation which, with steel guitar and (I may be mistaken) dobro - always make me think country, which I love!
By the way, was I seeing things or is Reese Witherspoon in the video?!

I don't find it lyrically trite either. It's a sentimental song with no repeating chorus and I think it's more effective than Secret Love. It's just really good.

 I see what you're saying, but the 'twang' is definitely there in After The Glitter Fades - it's just an instrumental twang rather than vocal.
And yes - that is Reese! Lucky girl.

I been emotional lately with a sick family member. This song just envelopes me like Has Anyone Ever Written. I just love it.
That's kind of how music works--certain songs touch your soul in a way that regular words can't. I'm glad this song reaches you. (no matter how it affects me or anyone else) I hope your relative heals and will soon feel better.
There were several people on this board that were moved to tears by this song. Others, not so much or at all. There isn't a right or wrong reaction. People are getting to listen to it and are clearly feel free to discuss it openly here, no matter what their thoughts are.

What I find, both funny and perplexing, are the expectations people have -- which in turn turns fans against each other with such intensity!
I have been a die-hard fan of Stevie since 1976 (and many other artists as well). Given the forum we have in the age of the internet, I've seen how radically our relationships with artists have changed. We used to just buy the album, examine artwork, and read the liner notes. Then intently listen to every note. Some songs may hit you right away. Other songs may take repeated listens to fully appreciate -- sometimes even years!
Now we are questioning and debating the viability and integrityof marketing plans, their PR, their singles, their producers etc... Judgements are delivered and established quickly - even before we have the full product. It's not about being open to change or progress, or being challenged by an artist's work --- it's only about your own expectations about what you want it to be! Me! Me! Me! ImMEdiately!
I learned that my favorite artists don't always fulfill my ME expectations. True artists challenge their fans. Stevie is a far cry from those artists...at least on an extreme level. She stays mostly in her own comfort zone. After Bella Donna and Wild Heart, I was so dissappointed with Rock A Little. It was a harsh departure (in my under-developed mindset) from the previous albums. Why couldn't she just stay in the same vein as before?
All these years later, I appreciate the album more for what it wasn't -- the same as before! Is Stevie rock and roll? Is she country? I really don't care. Just being Stevie with some new music is good enough for me. I'm not getting my panties in a twist over this or that. Nor am I criticising every little snippet and piece of media we are getting leading up the release date. My only expectation is that I will have a new Stevie album. And like a bastard child, I will eventually accept, if not love, whatever she delivers.

I think it should also be noted here that when the sizzle reel came out, we were all blown away and, by and large, it went beyond our expectations. Someone finally threw us a bone, and that bone was incredibly delicious! And we loved our lives!
Then this video arrives on the scene. The track is strong, but the video is a very subdued affair (though it's GREAT to see casual Stevie - anyone else in love with 2:38 - where she's fanning herself breezily beside Lori on the couch? Sensual Mama! She turns me out!!!). All of the videos we got tastes of in the sizzle reel are majestic and grand in scope - save for maybe Annabel Lee (kill the horse's whinny, would you please?) - and some of us are bound to be a bit let down by this video. But let's just enjoy it...it's another tasty bone!!!
Also of interest:
When Dave throttles her with his love at 1:56. It looks like she'd rather be in hell!
When the Hallowe'en dinner party is in full swing at 2:07 and everyone raises up their chalices of red grapes, Stevie hoists up a sad tumbler of juice, or something similar. The look on her face is priceless: "Bastards..."

We all know Stevie was never a Video Vixen. Even her best videos are less than desirable. With that being said, I kinda like the doc. style that is going on. Will I be tired of it after a couple of videos? Probably, but it looks like most, if not all of the videos from this era have been shot this way.

haha wow it hurts even more seeing the lyrics written out.
The only lyric that made me wince was this:
"What does money not buy? You and I."
and that is just because the syntax is awkward, in order to serve the rhyme.
Oh, and the lyric about going home being better than being alone sure is a statement about settling, isn't it? If my partner told me that coming home is better than being alone, I wouldn't feel too special.
I agree that the song is simply sweet, and not profound in any way, but I appreciate simple folk and country duets. The mingling of the voices lifts the simple lyrics, in my opinion.
It is the kind of song only a person in middle or old age would write, or appreciate. I am going to sit in my rocking chair now, and watch the video again - hahah

HI!
The sizzle reel with all those snippets was kinda eh for me but seeing the Cheaper for Free video and hearing the song for the first time makes me ecstatic for the album.
The lyrics are simple but there is something so poignant about it especially coming from our prolific writer(which indeed she is!) It really hits home and comes full circle for me. It actually reminds me of John Lennon's Love is Real. No?
Different strokes for different folks! We all like different aspects but its all coming from one source... Stevie! :)

This song reminds me (once again), that its dangerous to judge a song from a clip. CTF just like "Secret Love", from the 1st initial snippet, I wasn't impressed. Hearing the whole presentation, I did a 180!
Simply put "Cheaper Than Free" is a breathtaking, sweet little song. The arrangement is beautiful, that first held piano note slayed me, as well as the simple organ/keyboard roll in the 4th measure. Such a haunting way to lead off the song. And I love that this ends the album, to quote Stevie "I'd like to leave you with something warm" - perfectly sums up the feelings the song evokes and leaves me with.
Stevie and Dave sound terrific, but especially Stevie:xoxo:. The straightforward lucid lyrics are sentimental and effective. They work within the structure of the simplistic yet compelling emotion core of the song. "Whats brighter than a smile" is the dearest part of the song for me, and left me with a big smile on my face and some tears as well. Well done.

I'm not in love with the song, but I was reminded after reading the "least favorite Stevie tracks" thread just how many turds she's recorded. So this is pretty inoffensive.
She looks and sounds great. She also seems very happy and that makes me smile. :)
HA. Good point. And I agree - seeing her made me grin.
I love the song on account of the fact that it's real easy to substitute one's own juvenile lyrics with the the real lyrics. An example:
"What's harder than a rock?
My ____.
What throws me into fits?
Your ____."
Once you start, you can't stop. Thanks Stevie!
Is this my husband typing?

"All these newbies?" :rolleyes:Are you referring to posters here? Because you don't seem to have been around very long. Or do you mean years of fandom? How can you tell if these people are new fans?
Either way, if people don't like it they are allowed to express that. Why let it bother you. This is The Ledge - two of our more popular sayings at one time were "We are Ledgies. And we are not nice" and the good old Steel Magnolias gem "If you can't say anything nice, come sit by me."
I'm not hearing the 'country' vibe that seems to bother some fans. I really don't hear it at all. There is no western twang, which for me is an essential part of country music. I hear more of a simple guitar/rock ballad like Landslide, with less clouds and more sunshine.

Ironically, the one thing most people seem to hate about this song is the thing I find most interesting about it- the country-fried aspect to it. The first few verses are pleasant enough, and it sounds somewhat like a 1970's singer-songwriter tune ala Carly Simon and James Taylor... except with cornball lyrics. But it all makes sense when the guitar solo starts and the pedal steel wafts in through the song like a magnolia-scented breeze- it's all a throwback to Tammy Wynette and George Jones and it's supposed to be corny, but heartfelt at the same time.
Let's face it- this song is not going to go anywhere on the charts; neither Dave or Stevie are established country names. But it's like the little cherry on top of the sundae that kind of sums up the chemistry between Dave and Stevie- that above and beyond the potential to make money with this project, it ultimately boils down to the wonderful times they shared, the laughs, the intense creativity and, at the end of the day, their musical partnership. "You and me." This is a big, sloppy loveletter to themselves, and they deserve it.

As an album song it's perfect, might get Stevie some country attention, not a bad thing.

I think the operative word there is "snippet." Too soon to judge the tracks we haven't heard in their entirety, yes?
I know all of our opinions differ, but let's not consider a song to be the worst on the whole album. We haven't heard it yet.

I told David Wilde how much I loved Cheaper Than Free
His reply:
Yes, it's great, and there's a lot more where that came from on the album.

i fukcing love this song and video! she looks amazing and i like their chemistry! my heart was beating out my chest with this one! so glad we got to see come of the random gatherings at the house too!
is the documentary going to be on the cd or separate you think?
i'm in love w/ this cd already!!!!
Amen!!:D Now, I can exhale and have true faith that this record will be undoubtedly great:nod:! As Stevie said, there is a lot of diversity on the record, to me thats the best kind of album.
Dave mentioned he wants the documentary/film to have a very small limited release to independent theatre's in select cities. Other than that and it possibly airing on some cable outlet, I expect it to be released separately for commercial purchase later in the year.

I actually really think "Cheaper Than Free" will work really well as an album closer. Ok, so it's not the greatest song in the world, but it's a nice catchy little number and a great vocal from both Stevie and Dave. I think after "Italian Summer", which promises to be a classic Stevie epic, it will work - sort of like "The Highwayman" coming after "Outside The Rain" or, to a lesser extent, "Love Is" following "Fall From Grace" (I see lesser because 'Love Is' is AMAZING..but you get the idea :P)

This is what I thought when I heard the song as well... it's slow and contemplative, and will be great to wind the album down. Very much in the spirit of The Highwayman. Perhaps I'm looking at Cheaper Than Free in the wrong way. I don't care for it because I haven't heard it in context. I wouldn't like The Highwayman as a stand alone song either, but it's a very vital piece of what makes Bella Donna, Bella Donna. Perhaps Cheaper Than Free will make much more sense and be more enjoyable for me once I've heard how it sits with the other songs on the album, the theme of the album, etc.

I think CTF would make a CRAP choice for a single - much the same as I think "The Highwayman" would be a bad choice for a single. But that doesn't make it any less of an important part of the whole album listening experience

Given that this will be the worst song on the album it's a damn sight better than some of the filler trash on TISL.
As an album song it's perfect, might get Stevie some country attention, not a bad thing.

Interestingly enough, Stevie's facebook page was just updated saying that Cheaper Than Free "will be featured on In Your Dreams." Nothing about it being a single. So perhaps Cheaper Than Free is actually the "promo single" that people originally thought Secret Love was. In essence: a song released to whet the fans appetite and give them a taste of the upcoming album.

I agree with most of this, though I do like The Highwayman as a stand-alone as well.
I was confident I would hate CTF based on the clip. While I still find some of the lyrics annoying, I am surprised that I do like the song. My first thought on hearing CTF in full was that it feels like a closing song for a Stevie album more than any closing song since The Highwayman.
With all due respect to Dave, who is not a bad singer, I keep thinking that this one would have been better (in terms of both aesthetics & marketing) with Tom Petty singing his part. But overall I do like it.

Do record companies still release "singles" anymore, esp for older artists? I am wondering where and what type of airplay her new stuff would get. I have heard "Secret Love" all over satellite, is that considered a format? It's interesting that she has recorded videos for several songs, kind of like a package deal like Annie Lennox did for Diva. No one particular single, several singles, all put out there at once. I guess we'll see!

As an album track and a closer it is fine..a single not so much.Of course Tom would have been a much better choice but he probably would have told her "no you wrtite your song yourself":lol:Dave is not much of singer I concur but his vocals are salvaged by singing with one of the finest female harmony voaclist of the last 4 decades.

My 2 issues with this song are:
GRAMMAR
What's cheaper than free? - you and I* ..are
What does money not buy? you and ME*
Oh ho it's a pathetic losery point but when the music is stripped down so all you can hear is the lyrics I find it hard to ignore!!
My other issue is that it's boring, and the lyrics make me think they sat one day and thought "Oh. We need a 13th song, let's quickly write one before the record execs get here" and have just rhymed everything that slightly rhymes in 1 hour and put it to be a very simple beat.
I'd love to love it, but I don't. I want songs like on the sizzle reel that are exciting and Stevie-ish! This won't spoil the album but boy does it not add to it IMO.

That's the thing about music... it's not logical. Just because I love Stevie Nicks does not mean the next logical step is I love ALL of her songs. Music is emotional... it either reaches out and grabs you, or it doesn't. Secret Love in it's entirety reached out and grabbed me. These snippets have not done so yet. But if you'll reread my first post you responded to, I admitted I probably need to hear the entire songs to be able to connect with them and make a decision.

I say this as someone who loves the majority of Stevie's catalogue ('Street Angel' aside), but this is a real turd of a song. Although Stevie's vocals are indeed lovely, they can't mask a sappy sentiment and a very beige articulation of it. It's a shame that such a sweet video, which clearly sums up the whole process of making this album with Dave, is wasted on a song like 'Cheaper Than Free'.
That said, the song was worth it just for the responses in this thread. Never let it be said Stevie fans don't have a sense of humour!

I thought much of the Wild Heart album was sappy. I thinks it would have been a much better album it they had gotten rid of several tracks (i.e., "Gate and Garbage" and "Beauty and the Beast") and included Sleeping Angel, Julia, Violet and Blue, Golden Braid and held on to Blue Lamp for this album. It really is about taste!

I'm really looking forward to this CD a lot. I really like the sound of Secret Love. BUT...I just despise this song.
What's triter than trite? Man, does this song really bite.
Why are they singing this song? It just doesn't belong.
OK, it took me about 12 seconds to come up with those lyrics. I think that's about as long as it took for them to come up with them too. (Sorry, I haven't been following, did they both write it or did Dave write this himself?) Expressing simple ideas simply yet eloquently is an art. It's hard. This song honestly sounds like a 13-year-old sat down and tried to write a song for the first time. And that's all well and good, if this were on a Hanna Montana CD. Stevie's strength is writing spacey, mostly non-linear lyrics that get turned into songs that, in my humble opinion, only she sings well. I think very few of her songs are very coverable, and I don't think she's very good at covering songs in general. In that sense I think she's unique. Only Stevie sounds like Stevie, and when she does someone else, she still sounds like Stevie, except it's not very interesting. So anyway, I'm really hoping this CD is great, but I"m really bummed that this is on it. If she wanted to include a "simple" song to finish, why not that song that she has spoken about as one of her first ones, I've Loved and I've Lost, I'm Sad but not Blue or the Grandfather song or something other than this :(
OK, I'm done complaining. Just had to get it out. Can't wait for IYD to come out. Hope to see Stevie on tour :) Sorry for being so negative.
