I just tried to explain to my husband why I was chuckling. I love this thread! And I love how Never Heard From Ledgies are popping in to participate.

LOL...same thing happened to me. My husband just looked at me and left the room. Haha. Love it :)

OK, OK, my complaining was dealt with and now I feel sooo much better. Thanks you guys :) I think we need to have a Cheaper Than Free songwriting contest. The prize will be, natch, cheaper than free :)

That's the thing about music... it's not logical. Just because I love Stevie Nicks does not mean the next logical step is I love ALL of her songs. Music is emotional... it either reaches out and grabs you, or it doesn't. Secret Love in it's entirety reached out and grabbed me. These snippets have not done so yet. But if you'll reread my first post you responded to, I admitted I probably need to hear the entire songs to be able to connect with them and make a decision.

It all boils down to taste. I hear Italian Summer and it reminds me of the deplorable sappiness of Wild Heart. You hear it and you're in ecstasy. Your viewpoint is just as valid as mine. I don't discount your tastes, and you shouldn't discount mine. And most importantly, keep it about the music... leave negative personal comments of other board members to yourself. We're here to discuss the music, not berate each other because we don't have identical taste.

Ok I was more pointing out negativity than making a negative personal comment but its cool Im not one to nitpick.

For me I didnt hear enough of Italian Summer or WSS to be in ecstasy or be dissapointed - I remembered it all you just had to fall - was the only line we heard  The other two were a little longer and I heard enough to form an opinion. I can't wait til May 3rd when we will have complete songs to discuss.

I am not crazy about "Cheaper Than Free." What's up with her and Dave though? Very chummy friendly on this video. Really hope its all acting between them but Dave is very much in these new videos we've been seeing. Afraid to see what other little surprises they have in store for us.

Omg, this thread is the best one ever. So much fun! I love the song, but the "new and improved" lyrics y'all are coming with are hysterical and I hope Stevie's/Dave's peeps are checking in and laughing as well. I love the Ledge! And Stevie

Ok, that's the worse one yet.

When Stevie listened to those FM albums back to front, Mission Bell must have stood out for her.

My love is higher than a mission bell (How deep?)
Deeper than a wishing well (How strong?)
Stronger than a magic spell . . .

After all the criticism I got yesterday for saying I hated the song and the video, I want to say I listened to the song a thousand times and this is my opinion now:
- Stevie sings really great.
- The song is not simple: It’s simply a bad song.
- The last lines “you child, you child” are just horrible.
- The “your hand” few seconds of the video look false and pathetic.
- She looks great.
- Dave Stewart looks as narcissistic as yesterday .
- Secret Love is a cute song, but Cheaper is not. What about (e. g.)Taylor Swift singing this song? What would you think? I love Stevie, but I’m not deaf.
- I hope the rest of the CD has nothing to do with this (though I can’t forget “Everybody loves you” and “Italian Summer” are there to make bleed a little more).
- And yes, I have enough with those little snippets to realize what’s coming next.

I agree with most of these points. I don't have a problem with Stevie being 'un-mystical'. I think that there are quite a few of her songs that have been simple and easy to understand without compromising on good songwriting (Landslide, I Don't Want to Know, Leather and Lace) but I'm not sure this is one of them. She looks and sounds amazing, and I think the drums and some of the guitar parts are great, but lyrically, this is one of her worst songs (IMHO).

I've been bitter for months about this song being on Stevie's record since a) it's gonna be on Dave's album and b) to my knowledge, she didn't write any of it (I could be wrong about this). But after hearing it and watching that video, I am totally in love with it!! I think the song itself is beautiful...corny at times, absolutely but their voices blend beautifully and I think the production is top notch. I think it probably could have worked well beingcompletely acoustic but the guitar/drums give it some ooomph. I don't think it sounds country at all and I really love the melody.

Now to the video...pretty priceless!! Stevie's expressions, especially while she's at the piano looking at Dave are so heartfelt and genuine. She looks like she's found something in herself and her music that's been missing for a long time. It's truly a delight to watch!!

It's a nice video, looks like they had a lot of fun making the album and Stevie sounds, and looks, great :)

However, I don't like the song. I've given it a chance, but I just dislike the lyrics and the music does not save it from the lyrics in my opinion. I really liked 'Secret Love' though so remain very optimistic for the rest of the album but this song will probably be skipped, a lot.

I totally relate to this bolded part, as that's been my exact thoughts/feelings since we all found out that CTF was gonna be on both Stevie AND Dave's record. But after hearing the whole song, I love it. The cornball lyrics work and their simplicity is sincere in its mushy sentimentality (grammar need not apply). The music is phenomenal imho and the whole song is catchy as f**k. Though, generally not a country fan or music buyer, I've never minded Stevie country-tinged songs. In fact some of them are among my favorites. This one is not as country as ATGF, but still has just enough to recall some of her more rootsy affairs And besides thats another reason why I love Stevie so much, is the diversity of musical styles she can pull off. It's never all the same or ever boring.

The problem with the song, which I LIKE, is that it doesn't really have any meaning to its structure. It's like: random cliche meets superior "rhyming" emotion; sentiments I AGREE with but compelling more musically, emotively, than thematically, rigorously. Instead, it would have been stronger if she had maintained the thoroughline of comparing status objects (fast car, high fashion) against emotional phenomenon (beating heart, high passion).

Why don't people like Stevie and Dave know this about writing? Neil Tennant would not have let that pass. Note the song's similarity to modern classic "Love etc" by the Pet ShopBoys:

(Don’t have to be) A big bucks Hollywood star
(Don’t have to drive) A super car to get far
(Don’t have to live) A life of power and wealth
(Don’t have to be) Beautiful but it helps
(Don’t have to buy) A house in Beverly Hills
(Don’t have to have) Your daddy paying the bills
(Don’t have to live) A life of power and wealth
(Don’t have to be) Beautiful but it helps
...

I believe that we can achieve
The love that we need
I believe, call me naïve
Love is for free

The thing that bugs me about the lyrics is that, even if they wanted to keep them simple and concise and you know, in the vain that they are now... some of them still could very easily have been improved upon.

For instance:

"What's faster than a fast car?"

If changed to 'What's faster than a speeding car?' it sounds much less elementary school and just .. less cringeworthy. Still doesn't make it a lyrical masterpiece but it's not so redundant, etc.

I randomly thought of that change in 2.5 seconds when I was humming it in the shower (the tune IS pretty catchy), so I just feel like if they sat down and worked on the lyrics a little more it would have helped so much. It's not that they have to be MYSTICAL - that's not the problem... they just aren't good.

Just my .02 cents.

I just heard the song, and though i don't love it, i think it's somehow strong. This song has a real structure, and has a concept. I like the production and arrangement too, reminds me of Bella Donna (the album). And Stevie's voice is great.

I'm really looking forward to hearing this album, we already have two completely different songs, one that is slightly overproduced, the other that is a bit too simple, but i'm sure we'll find some kind of balance. I was sceptical, but i'm telling you now, this album WILL BE amazing. :blob2::blob2:

I randomly thought of that change in 2.5 seconds when I was humming it in the shower (the tune IS pretty catchy), so I just feel like if they sat down and worked on the lyrics a little more it would have helped so much. It's not that they have to be MYSTICAL - that's not the problem... they just aren't good.

Just my .02 cents.

"What's faster than a speeding car" is actually a much worse line. It's mundane. It's trite. Whereas "what's faster than a fast car" is referring to a car that's fast all the time, basically its known to be fast, like say a Z29. Even a parked Z29 will get a comment like "oh there's a fast car".

I know...I can't stop watching it! The lyrics are so simple (and slightly corny loving the new lyrics people are making up...)...but the simplicity is one of the reasons it's so beautiful. Their voices sound amazing together. Really hoping they do this live together at The Webster. :)

I did not think I'd like it from all the commentary - but I love this song. So simple. It is when her voice is the best. Love it.

I love most of Stevie's country-tinged songs. This one though I think is just so..so. After I first heard the song and watched the video once last week, I kind of lost interest. I saw it again yesterday with my two sisters who have both have been big Stevie fans since 1976. After watching, both said they didn't like the song, but thought the video was interesting. I feel the same. The song is just bland on all levels..plain and simple. Fingers are crossed for the rest of the tunes.

It's not exactly Lennon-McCartney or Rogers and Hammerstein.

Does anyone else think of "the Highwayman" when they hear the opening music?

The only lyrics in it that really make me cringe are :

"more important than freedom, being needed"

and this one is pretty cringe-worthy too:

"more exciting than high fashion, high passion.."

BUT I DO love this line:

"What's deeper than a deep well? The love into which I fell."

She has definitely earned it. I probably chipped in for at least one or two steps in that beautiful staircase.I am hoping 'Cheaper Than Free' gets some recognition somewhere.

I love Stevie and wanted badly to like this song... but the unimaginative and sometimes insipid lyrics make me cringe. Seriously, it's like they just pulled out a rhyming dictionary and played "fill in the blank." The melody goes nowhere. I understand that there can be beauty in simplicity, but to have the ENTIRE piece structured as a sing-songy Q&A with minimal variation is not only boring, it's annoying. I've listened to it multiple times trying to will myself to like it but it's no use. In fact, the more I listen to it, the more it grates.

At least the video is cute.

I sure hope the rest of the album is more along the lines of Secret Love and less along the lines of this dreck.

BTW if anyone asked me if I were cheaper than free, I'd be offended. ;)

So being that Dave Stewart is such an innovative man... Came up w/ a great idea. I believe a great promotional tool would be for Dave Stewart/ Fleetwood Mac/Eurythmics do a 1 night only free (or maybe 1 dollar) web concert series via Stevie's house. how great would that be.It would garner both old and new fans and 'In your Dreams' Black Bird Diaries' etc.. would fly off the shelves :)

i think "more important than freedom, being needed" is profound. especially in the context of her life. she speaks so often of her freedom, yet in this lyric, she confesses to wanting to be needed. it's a choice we all must make. settle down to be "needed" or keep our "freedom"

I guess it has grown on me a touch. I think maybe I might not always skip it when I listen to the album, whereas if you'd have asked me a few days ago, I was more in the 'I'm going to physically scrape and gouge the track off of the CD using a blade or needle' camp.

is the high fashion/high passion a slam from DS about his wife, like she's too into fashion and not enough passion? or is it a compliment to her that she takes passion more seriously than fashion? or does it not have anything to do with him and his wife? ;p

That reminds me of something Stevie said. I think she said a doctor told her this, but I'm not sure whether it was a psychologist or a medical doctor. They said that before she joined FM she was always a caretaker and now that she has no one to take care of, it was mentally difficult for her. She needed to be needed, rather than waited upon.

Maybe Dave could talk Stevie into it, considering he was on Daryl Hall's 'Live From Daryl's House' webcast this month! For anyone interested in seeing some songs from it.....
