*ahem*
Okay first of all, just to be clear, I love her to death; I'm THRILLED she's touring.
I was at the concert at MSG Saturday night and I LOVED it and I plan to write a
very positive review when I get the chance.
Having said that - Sorry but I have to call bullsh*t when I hear it.
Unless my memory's greatly failing me here or I totally misheard, Stevie's
talking about how vastly Trouble in Shangri-la was affected by 9/11.
As I'm sure most of you know - well, just look on Nicksfix - the release
date was May of 2011.
Uhm - Has she HEARD of the Internet?

I think she's referring to the TISL TOUR. She was in NYC when 9/11 happened & a show or two was cancelled because of it. And even though she carried on with the tour afterwards, I think the whole experience of 9/11 kinda ruined everything in terms of her enjoying TISL.

Right and she said that the album kinda disappeared because of 9/11, so "Love Is" disappeared with it.

Yes, it's the tour she means.

Love is wasn't in the set list from day one of the tour. Sorry but I don't think it was going to be anyway.

Mama is clearly deluded. The reason why "Love Is" disappeared is because she didn't like the way it turned out and she probably tried to forget about its existence. It was never part of the setlist. It does annoy me that she keeps bringing up 9/11 like she is some kind of victim of the experience. You know who probably has a legitimate claim to whine about 9/11? Mariah Carey. Her album Glitter came out on 9/11, and it turned out to be her first official flop. Any hype or news about its release was quickly buried and forgotten. Admittedly, the album itself is not bad at all; but the combination of 9/11 and the so-awful-it's-fun movie Glitter really spelled out its failure. The only saving grace was when the song "Hero" inadvertently became a rallying theme for the fallen firemen and NYPD.

She means the tour. Everything sorta got sidetracked and she was in New York when all that stuff happened. I think it scared her. 9/11 hurt everything. The economy was fine and everything and then all of sudden 9/11 and everything just started going south. Right after 9/11 happened, is when there were rumours at my job that we were going to be eventually laid off. It scared people. People stopped giving raises.

Her schpiel was not about the tour. It was about the song "Love Is" and how it supposedly "disappeared" until she re-discovered the piano demo years later. I'm happy that she has decided to add it to her repertoire, but I do think it's in bad taste to exploit 9/11. Yes, it was a harrowing time for all of us in New York on that date, but it really has nothing to do with TISL or the fate of "Love Is."

I rarely take anything Stevie says completely literally. I always have to "read between" her lines. In short, I feel Stevie's always tried to convey that TISL disappeared because of how she felt after 9/11. All of a sudden, everything became more real, serious and scary, to the point that any excitement she was feeling about her fabulous new album TISL & tour were no longer important, or the center of attention for her. I remember vividly, that she was very close to wanting to chuck the rest of the TISL tour, and run back home. I recall her recounting conversations with her mother, with Don Henley, and other friends, that were trying to comfort and console her, all the while reminding her it was important to charge on. But any enthusiasm she had for the album was gone. She was disillusioned, and the tour became more of a mantra to carry on.

I think Stevie has a point. The album was selling well then everything economically came to a screeching halt after the shock of 9/11. I remember the car companies all had to offer 0% financing to get people buying stuff again. This isn't "exploiting" 9/11, it's stating a fact that the album had been doing well but then stopped along with many things when that event happened.

If I'm not mistaken, TISL had pretty much fallen off of the charts by 9/11. Again, I'm not saying that Stevie does not have a right to feel horrified and scarred by the whole experience. I'm just saying that she is conflating 9/11 with her performing the song "Love Is," which just doesn't make sense to me. It was never in the setlist then, so what does 9/11 have to do with it? She killed off the song herself.

I didn't hear what she said about Love Is at the concert the other night, but conflation is her absolute stock-in-trade. Honestly, I don't think she has any idea that she does it, and that if she was called on it she'd be amazed at how much her recollection of many, many things departs from empirical evidence.
It's not unique to her, either. I have two sisters and although we all grew up in the same house, you'd never know it to listen to us.

Very true. I remember a year or so ago I was really angered by something she said about the Unleashed tour. Something along the lines of the band's tour schedule was so intense it was about to kill them. I got SEVERELY p!ssed because working for 3 hours every 3 days is hardly an intense job. Most of the time Stevie's staggeringly out of touch views are endearing... sometimes, they're borderline infuriating.

I don't think she'd be performing the piano demo version of Love Is if she didn't. There's a lot of love for this version on YouTube and other places and I do believe someone might have mentioned it to her. Think about it. When was the last time you ever heard her do a piano demo version of one of her produced songs? Someone's keeping track.

Yeah, she's talked about how Karen found Secret Love on Youtube and brought the song to Stevie when she was looking for new songs for In Your Dreams. Apparently the youtube copy ended up being even better quality than the cassette copy Stevie had in her collection.

I think her points is likely that Trouble In Shangri-La disappeared after the 9/11 shock and because it did she basically forgot about this song and has recently come back to it.

She didn't even come close to implying that. She said they (Lori) couldn't find the tape in Phoenix, so the YouTube version that Karen stumbled upon, was a pretty good copy to go off of, instead of just the fragments that she had of the song from memory.

And in turn, what she said probably wasn't even close to the 100% truth ;). Like you said earlier in the thread, we can rarely take anything she says completely literally.
The whole point being, youtube saved the day for Stevie.

I was just reading everyone's posts and this seems very possible to me.
If one were to take her actual words, they would mean - even though she
might not realize it - "The song 'Love is' was taken off of the album because
of 9/11" (or something along those lines, equally untrue and not possible -
I don't recall her exact words). But if someone drew it to her attention she'd
probably say "OH well that's of course not what I meant!"
I really do think she has a "minor mental glitch" or personality trait which
causes her to be extremely imprecise in the way she phrases things - she
somehow seems to have difficulty expressing herself with (spoken) verbal
speech sometimes - seriously, maybe that's a part of why she does it so well
with song, instead!
P.S. - In my honest opinion, the other side of the problem is that there's no one in her camp
who has the guts to call her on these things. Early-on, someone could have said, "Uhm . . . . STEE-vie! . . . . "
But I think we've all realized by now that people in her "circle" tend to steer way clear of contradicting her.
It reminds me of the Jane Austin novel "Emma" - The one who Emma ended up *actually* respecting was
the one who called her on her bullsh*t! ;)
(There's an awesome movie based on it starring Gwyneth Paltrow.)

Thats f*cking hillarious!
Stevie didn't always have difficulty expressing herself. Some of my favorite radio interviews are from the Tusk, Bella Donna, Wild Heart & OSOTM eras. But her RAL interview with "whats his name" - memories escaping me now LOL, were very EXPRESSIVE:shocked: in a very good way!
I think all the weed has re-wired her synapses. All that rockin' a little has caught up with her, along with the normal brain related/memory problems most of us have to look forward too later in life:

I disagree...
I think the album DID disappear after 9/11. First of all, she ended the tour and went right into recording with the Mac. Second of all, when Stevie did an interview with Jim Ladd before the 2005 Vegas shows, they discussed Fall From Grace and the album at great length. Stevie said at the time that it was her first time listening to Fall From Grace since 2001.
I believe her.

I don't have a feeling of not believing her - I think most of us who caught this
have more of a feeling, at the most, of "Well NO that's not technically true and
it probably would be better if she phrased it a little more accurately - she seems
to not really realize the literal meaning of her words, there."

BELLA DONNA - Stevie says upon it's release, was when they all found out Robin was seriously ill, on top of having to rush back to FM-she claims she never got to enjoy it's success (just the ego bump;))
WILD HEART - Robin died:distress: Stevie marries her best friends widower & also gets into a self erupting and destructive relationship with big ass J.W. The album stalls right after its 2nd hit single, Everyone involved felt it should have been an even bigger hit... except Stevie's drug dealer!
RAL- HOT MESS. Too complicated -If you don't know the story already - do yourself a favor and educate yourself. this. is. serious!!
OSOTM- Klonopin Glaze, other notable event *Stevie breaks her foot in her pool right before kicking off her tour. 1st known spotting of the frankenboks:eek:
SA- Another HOT MESS, Let's just keep this short & blame this one on Klonopin, pain killers & Glyn Johns!:)
TISL- 9 /11 !##!

I think you nailed it there. We're not just impatient, though... we're nervous as to how the album will sound after Stevie's extraordinarily long hiatus. And whether the addition of producer and co-songwriter Dave Stewart will be a coup or a hideous blunder. We're ready for the album, and have such high hopes for it after Stevie's long recording exile. I know this nervousness has fueled much of my crankiness on here!

I'm just trying to figure out what Stevie will say was wrong with this album in a few years. I can already hear, "Well seven of those songs were co-writes so they weren't simply Stevie, so I think that took away from some of it. And then there was all the chaos with the earthquake in Japan! And I also had to go do that tour with Rod Stewart, which just really drained me and prevented me from properly touring for that album."

I think you guys are exagerating. The only album that I've seen Stevie actively diss is Street Angel. The rest of them she seems very proud of.
That's not the same thing as talking about things that were happening in her life around the same time, such as how she didn't really enjoy Bella Donna going to number 1 because of finding out about Robin, or how she feels that Trouble In Shangri-La disappeared because of collective trauma related to 9/11. In those cases she isn't complaining about the albums at all, she's just talking about events that happened in relation to the two. Also I've never seen her gripe about The Wild Heart, Rock A Little or The Other Side of the Mirror at all.

Och, the woman just talks too much. Anyone who talks that much is bound to contradict themselves. It's like when the police get you to give them a statement of what happened six or seven or eight times: they're seeing how it starts to change. Because it always does.
Also, she was very, very stoned for a very, very long time. I'm amazed she's not more like, 'I was in a band? Really? Wow.'

In Atlanta, she stated that TISL came out in June, so she remembers that well enough. I think she's talking about associating the songs from TISL with that time and the songs / experience being tainted for her as a result. That would explain why it has nothing to do with whether or not the song was on the setlist in 2001, and why she hadn't listened to "Fall from Grace" either.
One thing that surprised me about the way she introduced "Love Is" in Atlanta was that she sounded like she'd actually forgotten she'd recorded it! She says, "When Lori and I were looking through all of our old cassettes to find songs for my new record, we found this cassette, it just said 'Love Is" - and we played it..." I'm like "Didn't you recognize the title?"
Working off a demo cassette would explain why she includes the demo verse - which I adore, by the way.
I must say, though, I do miss HAEWAFY... so much more uplifting for the audience and a more powerful closer, IMHO. She may be singing that she's happy but it's in such a mournful tone you don't feel it.
I keep hearing people say this, and I don't doubt it's true, but I don't think I've ever heard or read anything where she talks much about SYW at all. Could someone point me to an interview or something?
I can't think of an exact interview but I remember her trashing Lindsey's arrangements of her old demos after the release of Say You Will - not immediately after, if I recall correctly, but a while after so it didn't damage sales. Considering that Lindsey's always prided himself on being able to know what to do with her songs, that must have been quite a blow to him. OUCH Stevie. But then again when you listen to "Smile At You", one has to understand what she means (although I liked what he did with the other songs, especially EFO).
What I want to know is why she didn't insist that the songs be re-arranged so that they were more to her liking before the album was released. I doubt Lindsey could force her to go along with something she wasn't OK with. But hindsight is 20/20....

Yeah, Regarding her stage attire, Stevie said something to the effect that Lindsey asked her if she could tone it down some on stage :lol:LOL! Stevie went on to say - probably in that same interview or around the time of this statement - that to say she was was unhappy with SYW, is an understatement, or something to that effect.

Thank you so much for mentioning this. The Love Is demo is like my absolute favorite thing in the world and I too adore that when she does it live she includes that extra verse. It doesn't get much better than that, does it? I miss HAEWAFY to a certain extent but don't mind if it's replaced by Love Is. That's my special song.
