It's dreamy, lush, hippy-ish. It's very Stevie. Without the text it could be an 'indie' band cover. Also, I'm seeing an anime influence in the treatment of her face. Overall I'd grade all her album covers with a C+ average (with Street Angel bringing the grade down with an F). However this cover I would grade with a B+.

Look, she wants to fly through the world in a golden ball...she can't help it.

I think I'd like it more if there were a bit more to it...
and someone posted that in the crook of her right arm, there is an image of her face-to-face with her guitarist...
but I don't see anything like that (if there's any face there, it looks more like Jason Voorhees looking off to her left).

There are tiny light anomalies everywhere, but I don't see anything that looks like an in-joke or a message.
And I'd love it if there were an in-joke or a message...
Please tell me that there's an in-joke and a message! :blob2:

LOL at all the horse hate. I wonder if in 1981 these same people were like WTMFH?! THERE IS A COCKATOO ON IT!!!!!!

lol - yes! ;) I wondered that when BD came out.

I was wondering why, if a bird, was it not a dove?
But eventually as time went on, hearing it was her brother's bird, okay, I get it. She liked the bird. The rest of the awesomeness of the cover and outtakes make the bird okay. It is a cute bird. Just at first it was like - where did they get that idea from? Surely their budget is not so low they couldn't find a dove somewhere instead?

Anyone know if a Rhiannon song is on this new cd? The horse stood out as a Rhiannon symbol first and foremost to me.

Wouldn't that be a suprise if Three Birds of Rhiannon were on the CD. People would flip.

I do love the childlike innocence of her expression and form.

When I saw her face, I thought of Not Make Believe, the childlike petulance mixed with defiance, a bit of hurt. And the roundness adds to the youth, not like a aging woman swelling with botox, but more like a girl, whose face still has babyfat.

The horse stood out as a Rhiannon symbol first and foremost to me.

Yes, especially given that video that played behind her for the Caesar's Palace show.

When I saw her face, I was like "why so dire?" Then I thought YAY this is going to be a dramatic, atmospheric album.

I don't mind that Stevie's been photoshopped to an inch of her life, it's the norm, I mean, look at the soundstage DCD cover;

LOOK MA, NO LEGS

I actually love the horse, I love the contrast between the black of Stevie, and the white of the horse.

I just can't get over the bloody bubble  I hate it with a passion. It just looks so cheap! I love everything else though.

I didn't like that Live In Chicago cover either, with her legs cut off. AWFUL!! It never looked right. And I'm still not liking this new cover although some of the touch ups Ledgies have done so far, make her look better. Not liking the black dress either. It looks like any ol dress you could buy at a Goth shop online  and I expect extraordinary clothing from Stevie. Maybe I'll like this cover photo in time, but I'm never going to burden and complain to Dave Stewart about it. Come on people.

Maybe Stevie should've stuck to the people who know her best and what to do with her, instead of putting herself in new hands of people taking the risk of getting it right, or not (as far as shooting her in photos). That's always the chance you take.

I strongly disagree. It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all! Good for Stevie for mixing it up some and taking some chances... especially at her age and at this point in her career!

This album didn't automatically "WOW" a few of us at first sight, like past covers have. I was hoping for something though. :(

This album cover is near perfect. :xoxo: And may go on to rival and best TISL once I see the whole packaging and other pictures.

For me, this cover sets the tone, and its intention is clearly inspired by the centerpiece track off IYD, which I believe is "Moonlight - A Vampires Dream", inspired from Lady From The Mountains and New Moon of course. "So go with her. You know you want to! Well, you could use a dreamer...somewhere by your side.". Its pure fantasy! "Some call her strange lady from the mountains. And others say, "she not really real". And as Dave S. has mentioned, the horse is in the portrait because this is also a scene/dreamscape from the movie. Incidentally I can see this cover also being an excellent movie poster for Stevie's film.

Just as the intention for RAL was Lily about to hit the stage, hence the movement in that awesomely stark full body cover shot. We know OSOTM's artwork was obviously inspired directly by "Alice" In Wonderland. And Trouble in Shangri-La was about Stevie finding her way back to the sea, away from all the craziness, back to her sanctuary and solitude. IYD is no different. This is why love Stevie, to take us away from reality for that moment in our lives.

And all this hullabaloo about this photoshop business is just personal obsession. Everything and everyone is touched up these days, whether its a 15 year old magazine model or 62 yr. music icon. All this controversy makes me recall when OSOTM was released and everyone was screaming that Stevie's face was too air-brushed, and her eyes look bizarre or "strangely BRIGHT"!
This cover for IYD works for me, and looks like Stevie (despite the little face smoothing) to my eyes. The one photo shop fail that is worth mentioning, was People Magazine's "Most Beautiful People" 1998 edition, where they made Stevie look like a wax doll! I could barley make out any semblance of Stevie in that picture. Now that was truly awful. In Your Dreams is near perfect.

Lay off the photoshop on her face. She looks 15. If that's the look they're going for then yeah, it's great. I do like the imagery and the dress. In my dreams Stevie doesn't look 15 and I'm good with that.

Yup. My sentiments exactly. If they're going for dreamy, ethereal look then great! That can still be achieved with her 60+ year old face. Her face on this cover looks like a drawing superimposed onto her body (which has also been photoshopped to look more svelte than she actually is). It's pretty bad. I understand a little photoshopping to even out skin tone and some slight imperfections, but they went waaaaay too far with this one.

Belladonna is still my favorite album cover. And she looks real!

Yes, everyone is touched up. But the point, yet again, is that she has been touched up beyond the point of recognition. And I am not buying the line about her face being distorted due to the light/halo/penumbra/artifact thingie. It's all about restraint and about maintaining some semblance of reality. It's one thing to tweak things here and there... but here they basically gave her a new neck, a new face, new shoulders... it's more painting than photo.

I think the perfect example of a recent Stevie shot that was moody/haunting/surreal and definitely touched up, but still actually looked like the subject, was the promo photo that shipped with The Soundstage Sessions. This is what they should have been going for...

Pick it apart however you want, but I have to say, it exceeded my expectations, BIG TIME! My guess would be that this shot was taken during the video...note the white horse, yet again!!!!!!!
Just seeing Stevie outside, as oppose to another studio shot gives this a very warm feeling, LOVE IT!

Maybe they should use this as the new cover?

http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lhqnuhFkFh1qbxyupo1_1299587343_cover.jpg

that one would be too 'Symphonic metal-like'. I don't like the cover being used, but that's just a cherry on the pie to me, I'm more focused on the 'filling' myself (aka the music), as it everyone else.

When I first saw it (thumbnail size) on my phone, I loved it! LOVE the horse! But then again, I am a horse person. Then when I saw a big picture on the computer, I was like OMG Stevie looks 12. It doesn't even look like Stevie. The bubble ruins it. They could have got the same fuzzy look with mist or fog, which would have been more forest like. That bottom droopy lip is going to bug me! (on the horse ) plus both the horse's ears should have been pointing forward. I don't like the chain under his lip (which is why it may be droopy) but that is usually used for better control of the horse. Plus his body is all distorted. His right side is all lumpy and his left side looks like he's got a hay belly (hanging low and pretruding). The size of the horse in proportion to Stevie looks right. Seriously they should have done some photoshopping to the horse  Even the animals aren't safe

Overall I love it. The whole enchanted, mystical forest thing suits Stevie, but it could have been so much better.

I know! It's downright scandalous for Stevie to be baring her shoulders! But it looks sooooo good on her! If only she'd shelve the shoulder pads entirely for the In Your Dreams chapter of Stevie-dom.

She wore a bare shoulder outfit for the Behind the Mask publicity photo back in the day. It's on here somewhere. She's in curly hair and a hat.

me either;), but we always have those who feel the need to nitpick & rip apart everything~~

But as usual the same people who are never happy with anything. Have turned something really exciting into yet one more reason to complain.

That is exactly the way I fealt last night. When I saw the cover last night, I thought it was great and still do. However, then the complainers got a hold of it and ruined the moment...Somehow, some people ignore the brilliance of it all, just to find reason to complain...

It is only when someone says uthey hate something loudly And repeatedly and believe they continue to need to repeat How much they hate it as if we don't know already how they feel because they have posted it every chance they get that it goes beyond voicing your opinion and it is just complaining.

I actually had to leave this thread last night for that reason! It is what it is guys, let it be! For gods sake, she's dammed if she does & dammed if she doesn't! For someone to instantly blow the friggin picture up and point out all the flaw's

There have been several posts from those who love the album cover saying that those who don't are "haters" and could never be satisfied. This is a facile stance to take -- and simply not true.

I, for one, have loved Stevie for decades, but find this cover too obvious and "on the nose" for a Stevie album.

It's one thing to play to your strengths and another to stay safely (perhaps even embarrassingly) within a box. Other "haters" don't like the photoshopping (I'm okay with it).

Either way, these are honest critiques of the photo and you aren't really addressing them when you (the general you), generalize.

Why the need for a non-stop positive-spin-fest here? If everyone loved everything, how boring would the thread and the site be?

I would like to, in time, learn to love this album photo. They all obviously worked long and hard on this album so I would NEVER show disrespect to Dave or her openly by writing to them. I can't believe some people would. And to others who have complained about Stevie's looks on Perez's site saying she hasn't looked "this good in ages" well, they obviously haven't kept up with her in the past 10-15 years because she's taken some damn good photos since and appeared in public still looking her beautiful self. These obviously aren't her hard core fans following her career so pay no attention to those people.

I mostly like the photo, and in general I love the cover - but like your point and agree wholeheartedly. I believe the great majority of us would become quicky bored with thread after thread of nothing but praise for Stevie, her album covers, songs, Lindsey - or anything else discussed on this forum. Dissenting opinions progress a conversation in multiple directions that might never be visited if everyone loved everything all the time.

In sum, I 'hate' when people complain about haters. Most of them, hypocritically enough, go on to complain about their own dislikes on other topics anyway.

I too, have loved Stevie for decades, but feel decidedly differently than you do. In that, while Stevie has been accused of being airy-fairy, out there in the clouds, you name it, all her career - she has never fully capitalized on that in a full throttle, in your face way until now! And I for one am standing up applauding Stevie, along with Dave, for bringing it all full circle - with no apology or ambiguity!

I'm reminded of when Stevie embarked on her solo career upon the making of Bella Donna, and one of Jimmy Iovines main objectives was to steer clear of the airy-fairy image that people had conjured up in their minds about Stevie Nicks. Well finally, here she is, in all her GLORY.:D

Agreed. Some people are going on about how it is so cliche and "nothing new" but I say, the reason Stevie has such a strong fanbase is because she has always stayed "Stevie Nicks". If Stevie were to turn around and be someone she wasn't, or even simply a lesser version of herself, it would take away from who she is. I don't want to see Stevie Nicks in a refined dress or a pant suit. I don't want to see just a close up shot of her face. It is the mystery, allure, witchy/gypsy/airy-fairy part of Stevie that captivated so many people and if she walks away from that she might as well walk away from her career. It is like telling Willie Nelson to cut his hair and shave, or telling George Straight to put up the wranglers and the cowboy hat, or telling Madonna to tone herself down and do a country album. Now is not the time for Stevie to reinvent herself, it is the time for her to embrace that airy-fairy side of her and show people that she is still Stevie Nicks, which it looks like Mama is doing!

Following trends is fake. She's not a follower. She is a leader. Madonna started that whole thing and was successful at taking trends from the Gay Clubs and introducing them into the mainstream. Then everyone thought you had to keep up with trends to remain relevant.

I would argue that cover is most definitly not cliche. She's not even looking at the camera and the look on her face is eerie. It's different. Sorta dark and dreamy and that same time. It's creative and the horse is unexpected, yet beautiful.

What do you want? a bland face pic, like 95% of other artists

It's a clever marketing strategy.

Well, actually, if we're talking "marketing", having the text at the BOTTOM of the cover photo is a BIG faux pas. Granted, with record/CD shops disappearing faster than $3 a gallon gasoline, the " customer POV" is disappearing, too. But, being from the 60's generation of record store employees, it's been beaten into me that text should be at the top so customers can see who the album is by as they're looking through the racks/displays. Even albums with NO TEXT on the cover had stickers placed over the shrink wrap in either the upper left or upper right corner.

Stevie, your horse isn't quite a unicorn, but definitely a beauty. Perhaps an ordinary white horse- but for the mystically inclined, perhaps Shadowfax or Pegasus. I do appreciate the "Bella Donna" lyrical influence.

i was hoping that it was an intentional reference to play on the witch debacle, but i think Stevie may have been too annoyed by all that to see the humor, so it probably isnt.

Mmmmmkay. Well then, NOW I am on board!

There are so many things wrong with the new album cover, I laughed out loud for about 10 minutes when I saw it. The lens flare? Dear god, my 12-year old brother knows how to use that in Photoshop. It's *so* cheap. Why not use actual sunlight, or if you want it to be ~mystikal~, add some fog... anything but the awful Photoshop Lens Flare. Lesson 1 in Graphic Design for us was: never use the lens flare effect. I cannot and will not get over this. Ever.

Her face? Doesn't even look like her.

And that damn horse. Come on, it's a *horse*! Hey, why not go all the way and put her next to a unicorn, that would have definitely made the picture complete. This album cover would have scored big on meditationmusic.com .

The music better be absolutely mindblowing if it is to make up for this.

I agree, the cover is great, but to me that doesn't even look like Stevie. If she, idk, looked more like herself then I would like it more. There's just something different about her face that I can't quite put a finger on. Someone said "round and pouty..." too round and pouty, methinks.

To me, Stevie must be really happy with the end result (of her face) since she obviously approved it, and therefore, the "cartoonish/anime" effect is something that she was striving for.

I still really really like it, but the plumpness of her face has me somewhat confused.

Well, actually, if we're talking "marketing", having the text at the BOTTOM of the cover photo is a BIG faux pas. Granted, with record/CD shops disappearing faster than $3 a gallon gasoline, the " customer POV" is disappearing, too. But, being from the 60's generation of record store employees, it's been beaten into me that text should be at the top so customers can see who the album is by as they're looking through the racks/displays. Even albums with NO TEXT on the cover had stickers placed over the shrink wrap in either the upper left or upper right corner.

I don' t think that's as relevant today. Considering the internet/digital world we live in, most people don't shop for "albums" in record stores like they used to. The picture or imagery would be more of a selling point for those who are not familiar with Stevie. Besides, in most record stores I've shopped in, there's usually plastic dividers with the artist's name on top for identification purposes.

Question 51 - from Elise Geither:
Stevie,
Where and when did you learn to ride horses? Do you have a horse or a favorite horse/breed?

Elise Geither
& Mighty Thunder Cloud (my horse)

I never really "learned" to ride. I just starting riding. I do not have a horse, but have always liked Palominos.

I think the photo looks like her, even if she is touched up lightly. To me a lot of it boils down to lighting and makeup technique. I don't really see a third hand everyone's talking of. It looks like background/lighting reflection to me. Or could be bad editing yes. It always bugged me her thumb was in Lori's wrist cuff inside the Timespace cover. Little things happen sometimes. Otherwise a great picture of them.

What's that old song? "She'll be driving 6 white horses when she comes. . . ."

:)

I guess I want to know the significance of the white horse-- why she used it on the cover of the album. It took some effort to do this shot--doubtful her brother had a beautiful white horse. Was there some sort of reference to it in any of the songs that were performed? I guess one could argue the same thing about the bird, Max, on Bella Donna . . . but at least there was a song about a white wing-ed bird. There's some symbolism or something there, I think. Like the three roses, etc on Bella Donna's cover.

Well, I'm not defending the poser of the question, but you have to admit that this is exactly what Dave should expect when he exposes himself on Twitter. He really doesn't need to do it, nor do 90% of the celebrities that are out there tweeting on a regular basis. I think some of your celebrities who do the FB and Twitter thing would expect most to be respectful and behaving of themselves as people would with any one on the street. Just because it's the faceless internet doesn't make it ok to be rude or an ass to anyone, especially celebrities. To me it's a privilege today we can even interact with the famous people we adore, so I don't see how some people can be so rude to them online. Yeah I have my disagreements sometimes with normal people online but I would never be insulting or rude I don't think. Especially to any celebrity I may have written online. These are supposed to be the people we adore so why would some people act so rude to them? I haven't ever done Twitter but I feel like starting one just so I can apologize to Dave for the way some have acted.

But according to Stevie, if you drop by her house, there are no like owls *insert owl pose here*!

She should have used ones the size of Pigwidgeon, then it wouldn't be so bothersome.

I totally agree!

So do I. I don't know that it would have made a great album cover, but it surely is much more what she actually looks like!

In Your Dreams was released in the states four months ago but so far, I haven't noticed any opinions being expressed about the album cover, which is surprising to me. What do you think of the album cover?

Hate it.

But seriously. :(

There was lengthy discussion on it when the album cover was released.

I like it, and now knowing that the picture is horizontally reflected, it makes sense that while it looks like Stevie, it doesnt' quite look like her exactly.. 'cause we're seeing a mirror image of her face.

I love everything about it but the bloody bubble thing, it's a stupid, unnecessary, tacky effect.

But why did they flip it? Wouldn't a natural photo have been fine?

My favorite covers from her will always be Bella Donna through Rock A Little with TISL a close 4th but the IYD cover is still growing on me. I much prefer a full black outfit something Stevie/witchy like the Soundstage lithograph in the top hat than that dress on the IYD cover.

It was taken in a mirror. They didn't flip it - the mirror did. That's also why it's a little bit skewed around the edges, because of the angle the mirror was in, I guess.

I think it's cool. From what i read somewhere..it was a random shot and came out cool so they used it. I think Kristin Burns is a freakin awesome photographer, and to be honest,i think it goes along with this album being more out of the box-in terms of Stevie co-writing for the first time,it being a drama free process..So i say good for her for not just throwing on a tophat and spreading her gossamer wings and deeming it a cover because it is what everyone expects of her. But that is just my opinion:D

I really like it. The mirror image, bubble effect, horse (!) it's all cool... but the amount of photoshop work done on Stevie's face was unnecessary and so her face looks downright weird in it! That said, I have the image on a t-shirt though!

I could do without that horse. Horses have their place, but with Stevie's plain dress, paired with the horse, it doesn't say mystical or magic to me (as the bubble would imply). It says that Pa sent Laura Ingalls down to the mercantile to pick up some groceries.

I detest horses (and it's a mutual hate), but I still do love the album cover. It reminds me very much of the movie Legend from the '80s, which was very magical.

If Stevie was dressed like the woman in that picture, then I'd agree with you. Stevie is kind of understated on the IYD cover and I don't think her dark dress meshes with the horse. If she'd been wearing costumes from her videos it would have been a completely different story.

I've tried to like this album cover but now that some time has passed I'm convinced I never will. There's just too much wrong with it. First off, what they did to Stevie's face is unpardonable. Second, there's just too much going on. Stevie doesn't need a horse or a bubble or a forest. Stevie just needs to be Stevie, wearing something fabulous (which that dress is not) in some sort of pose only Stevie Nicks could pull off. Her four album covers from the "80's all kept Stevie front and center, without any co-headliners. Their simplicity was the key to their effectiveness. That formula worked and they shouldn't have messed with it.

I like the cover .but my friend didn't like it.Also he wondering why Dave is on the back of it.I told him Dave is the producer plus he sings with her on the album.

I suspect Stevie has embedded symbolism into the cover of some sort.

It doesn't even look like her, well maybe a very young Stevie. It's a little disturbing to me.

I did find the album cover too photoshoped , actually I liked more the other picture where there is no horse, not because of the no horse but because she looks more real, more Stevie.

Anyway, my point and why I'm posting again in this thread is because I just find funny this picture (actually found in Christine forum) of Stevie. Funny because I compared to the IYD cover and the Tango Stevie looks like the mother and the IYD Stevie looks like the daughter.

I know!!
I guess sometimes she doesn't look good when smiling, specially in the last years. She often looks serious, I thought it was for a "mystic" look but..

Can't believe that pic it's the same year of these... and maybe the same photo session, same day:

This is the live "image" (within seconds) from which the album cover was culled from - the footage was included in the "Moonlight" video. And obviously Dave's kiddo's got photo-shopped out of the frame.

I don't like the cover either, like the pic on the back of the booklet better. This is why I didn't get the "official" tour shirt, because it's the album cover. I'd never wear that, I got the black hazy shot shirt last night instead.
