Hey guys, I miss ya'll. I'll be on the ledge tonight for a little bit :) I've been glued to the TV and I'm SOOOOOOOO EXCITED!

I'll be honest though, I thought that the Stevie/Taylor thing was an iamnotafraid thing :D

And I got to see Billie Joe Armstrong/Green Day. I am a happy camper.

Has anyone ever heard Taylor say anything about Stevie prior to this? She's really grown on me in the last couple of months, I like her music a lot now.

And I bet they would too.

I had heard their name before, but somehow the song they performed, I've never heard before. It was really good - wonder what Stevie thought of that little duet from backstage, if she's watching. The whole thing sounded and LOOKED very 80's Stevie.

Did they just sing "Eye in the sky" by the Alan Parsons Project? Sounded that way to me...

I thought it was a sweet performance, though odd to see someone else singing "lead" on Rhiannon with Stevie standing right there. I thought Stevie looked like Stevie and I'm excited for her- I imagine she's having a great time tonight.

This is from the LA Times blog:
Putting Swift with such a distinctive rock 'n' roll voice isn't the best showcase for her. Swift's appeal is her good-natured charm and simplicity, but she's also a flat vocalist.

It's 3am where i am, and i waited to see Stevie. And then Taylor wailed like an off-key cat on valium. Had to concentrate real hard to block her and out.

Stevieeee :D was beautiful & sounded great.

Stevie looked really good! I thought she sounded a little nervous. I thought she sounded raspier than normal. But it's really cool to see her at the Grammys and I loved the way they ended Rhiannon. I don't like Swift - she didn't sound that great. Glad to see Stevie was into her song though and looked happy. Loved that hug they gave at the end. I hope we can buy this on itunes.

I'm sorry, but the harmonies sucked because Taylor Swift was flat. I thought Stevie sounded good on Rhiannon, but it seemed to me she was trying not to upstage Taylor, but she should have IMO!

I thought Stevie looked and sounded good. But Taylor, yikes, she was definitely off-key and the harmonies on Rhiannon were terrible (but better on her own song). I never really took much notice of Taylor Swift before, I'm sure she's a good songwriter and seems to be a charismatic performer but she's definitely not a strong vocalist.

StreetAngel95
01-31-2010, 10:04 PM
HOLY CRAP! Taylor was dreadful! Stevie why did you let that go on?!?!?!?! You shouldve just taken the mic from her! and WADDYYYYY good ol' Waddy! I will give her this much - Stevie has very high standards for her duets, so i do respect Taylor for that.

They sounded better together on Taylor's song - how cute was Butch Walker on the banjolin? He truly looked thrilled to be onstage w/ Stevie.

I know a lot of you are still wondering, "who the hell is Butch Walker?" Google him and then buy all of his solo records!

NY Times Liveblogging is pretty brutal (but kinda funny, I have to admit):

Taylor Swift Performs With … | 9:44 p.m.

D.I.: Wait, Ryan Seacrest on a non-Idol broadcast? Nobody tell Simon Cowell! He’s here to introduce Taylor Swift, who is playing a guitar made out of a wicker chair, apparently.

I’m glad they engineered all her victories to justify the song selection.

J.C.: O.K., this is easily the worst Taylor Swift single ever. Like an funnyordie parody of Taylor Swift.

D.I.: Sad thing is, all the teens in the audience are thinking. Why are they singing about Rihanna?

J.C.: This explains the draping of Taylor Swift’s sleeves, at least.

D.I.: Who is out of tune? WHO???

J.C.: Stevie Nicks is trying very very very very very hard not to outsing Taylor.

D.I.: She is succeeding beyond her wildest dreams.

J.C.: So who brings out Lindsay Buckingham - Flo Rida?

D.I.: Yes, Stevie, get back on the tambourine. Away from the mic.

J.C.: Stevie’s having more fun than she’s comfortable admitting on this alt-version of “You Belong With Me.” I bet Chris Thile is MAD right now.

D.I.: At least she will some day provide Jennifer Coolidge a role to play in the VH1 Stevie Nicks biopic.

Look I thought Stevie looked really good. But those harmonies were a disaster. I thought they would sound good together. But Stevie sounded like Pazuzu from the Exorcist and Taylor sounded like a younger version that didn't know what she was doing. It was terrible. The worste performance of the night.

That was cool to see. When Taylor started and I saw Stevie decorated mic out there, I smiled hardcore.

I never realized that Taylor struggled so much to match pitch. It was sad. Stevie was cute though, although their voices didn't blend too terribly well. Hope Stevie is having fun tonight though!!!! :) I love that lady. Gonna go listen to me some Stevie. It's been awhile.

Stevie's tambourine made Taylor's song better, never mind her voice. Taylor is good but not enough to sing with Stevie and it totally showed. I would've declined for fear of sounding just like she did. Stevie was good, though.

From looking around Twitter, the general consensus seems to be that Stevie was good and Taylor Swift was baaaad.

Some funny Tweets I loled at -

HoorayCookies RT @vanillabean45: Stevie Nicks should have been like "Imma letchu finish, but you are really out of key"

MadsKay: Ok so I actually don't dislike Taylor Swift. HOWEVER: that was reeeally off key, and Stevie Nicks singing backup? Not ok.

homeskillet108 : Stevie Nicks is soooooooooo fabulous. Why did they have to ruin the moment with with Taylor Swift???????????????????????????????

mtrr9669 : I still can't believe Stevie Nicks sang backup for Taylor Swift...I'm in Grammy shock.

thegsides : Taylor Swift - please get in any key, we are not picky and Stevie Nicks by herself is plenty good enough. Why did you kill her with TS?

AshWantstoRock : And....taylor swift sucks. Stevie Nicks sang Taylor's song better than Taylor did. The end. Goodnight.

emmcubed : I sense a great disturbance in the Force, as if a million voices cried out in terror as Taylor Swift sang "Rhiannon" with Stevie Nicks.

shannonstacey: Grammy tip: If you totally suck live, you might want to reconsider getting on stage with Stevie Nicks.

JillByerly : Taylor Swift you disgraced Stevie Nicks at the #grammys! Who allowed you to share the stage with her?

Aaand

AnneNicholas : oh god someone please turn taylor's mic down. i am embarassed for her, does she really think that stevie nicks is on backup vocals?

So yeah, I'm just pleased the general consensus seems to be that Stevie was good and Taylor was awful. I'd prefer it if they were both brilliant, but I'd rather Taylor be getting all the hate than Stevie, really >_>

I liked it myself though, I thought both were fabulous. Needed more Rhiannon though.

I was so embarrassed for Taylor. She was really struggling with the harmonies. Poor Stevie too - it must be really frustrating to sing with someone so off key. The way she was looking at Taylor during Rhiannon, it was like she was trying to will her not to suck. But sadly, that was impossible.

Well that was pretty much a let down. Stevie didn't get to do anything. And she looked good- but I really wish she would have come out twirling, wearing a top hat and a cape. And I wish that they would have let her end Rhiannon in a more rocking way (ala Live in Boston or Soundstage), but I am well aware that this was not really the arena to do that. It was more about Taylor.

It just sucks that the performance was pretty abysmal because this could have been awesome if done differently and maybe even scored Stevie a few new fans.

Regarding the comments above, I didn't think Stevie looked "old", I just wish they would have done her hair wavy like Soundstage and maybe had her wear something differently. Next to Taylor's teenage skin, Stevie just looked a little soft, but that is better than stretched.

Before i was crying out of happiness that stevie would be on mainstream tv, but now im crying at how badly taylor rendered "Rhiannon". I wanted the whole piano mood and " once in a million years a lady like her rises" but nooooo they had to do the studio version!!!!!! Ugh i'm so angry i could spit! And tomorrow at school i'll have to hear about this. "ewww you like that old woman?! Taylor was soo much better!" ughhh

I don't know if you'll hear that too much actually. Just browsing through twitter, most people feel as though Stevie powned. :)

I'm actually realizing that the aftermath of this performance will be good for Stevie, because people are starting to realize what real talent sounds like. Stevie will leave this situation unscathed, but this may seriously hurt Taylor Swift in being considered a legitimate live performer.

Yeah, pretty much everything I've seen/read so far is how Taylor Swift was off-key and whatnot.

I would think it'd be kind of hard to pleasantly harmonize with Stevie though. Her voice is just so unique and only Lindsey can really accompany it well. (Bias? What? Ha.)

From a tumblr.com post:
"Hey Taylor Swift, next time you choose who you want to sing with, maybe pick someone who is as flat as you are so it sounds kind of in tune. Kthanksbye
ps, Stevie Nicks doesn’t give a **** about what the boys in high school think about you. She’s probably thinking the same thing."

Man, I've never seen so much sympathy for Stevie on "ordinary" entertainment sites, as opposed to just the fan sites. For every comment that's critical of Stevie, I see at least 10 that bash Swift. And the criticisms of Stevie aren't anywhere near as harsh as the ones directed at Taylor. Hell, I haven't even see a single "LOL South Park" comment yet.

Something funny is happening here.

Just like the "Kanye West situation" at the VMAs, the "Stevie Nicks situation" at the Grammys is all anyone will be talking about tomorrow! Stevie is going to get very good (and free) press out of this, and that's never a bad thing!

Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks' Grammys duet: Out of sight, or out of tune?
by Clark Collis

The last thing I want to do is ruin another awards ceremony for Taylor Swift. But there’s no doubt that someone was badly off-key during the version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” that the country superstar just performed with Stevie Nicks at the Grammy Awards. And I’m afraid my money’s on Taylor. Moreover, I’m not the only person at the Music Mix who cringed at the sight of Stevie acting as Taylor’s backing singer on “You Belong To Me.” As one of my colleagues just emailed me: “Stevie Nicks is the ‘Gold Dust Woman,’ goddammit!”

But, hey, that’s just one, uh, music department’s opinion. What did you think of the Swift/Stevie collaboration? Do we owe Taylor a “Kanye”-esque series of apologies?

Little over an hour after accepting the Grammy Award for Best Country Album, comparing the win to an impossible dream, Taylor Swift took the stage at the Staples Center to perform a medley of her own tunes, as well as a song from one of her childhood heroes, who joined her onstage.

Ditching her sparkling evening gown for a more casual blouse-and-jeans combo, Swift took center stage with her guitar strapped to her shoulder for "Today Was a Fairytale." Swift then announced, "It's a fairly tale and an honor to share the stage with Stevie Nicks."

The former Fleetwood Mac singer then walked onstage. The two stood side by side, singing Fleetwood's "Rhiannon," at times a tad less harmonically than one would have hoped. Nonetheless, the women made for a compelling twosome, a portrait of two generations separated by years but drawn together by music.

Swift then grabbed her guitar for the third and final part in her medley, jumping into a twangy version of "You Belong With Me." Nicks stood back, tapping her tambourine and nodding in appreciation, every so often stepping up to the mic to share singing duties with the young artist.

At the end, Swift and Nicks embraced.

Taylor Swift Duets With Stevie Nicks at the Grammys

It was a pairing with a legend and one in the making, as Fleetwood Mac's leading lady Stevie Nicks joined Taylor Swift onstage at the Grammys. Earlier in the evening, Swift described Nicks as "her hero" and she opened her performance with 'Today Was a Fairytale,' playing a quick version on the acoustic before bringing out Nicks for Mac's 'Rhiannon.'

"It's a fairytale and an honor to share the stage with Stevie Nicks," she said as Nicks walked out. The version was cut short so they could duet on a banjo-driven version of Swift's hit 'You Belong With Me.' Throughout the performance, Swift and Nicks were making constant eye contact, with Swift dancing up close to her while strumming the guitar and Nicks playing the tambourine.

While Fleetwood fans probably wouldn't say this was Nick's best vocal duet, it was still one of the nicer surprises of the evening. Earlier, Swift took home the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal.

Well, they just cut out Taylor's first song.. which is where she sounded worst, IMO. I'm not a fan or a hater, she seems nice, but the kid needs some singing lessons.

I thought Stevie sounded great during Rhiannon, and fine during You Belong With Me... but a little rough at first. I think if Taylor would've just done harmony on Rhiannon it would've been a whole lot better.

Absolutely the grossest celebrity there is. I want to send her hate mail, really.

HUH? I am not really a Beyonce fan, but she is beautiful and can carry a tune. I can think of a few gross celebs, but she would never come to mind.

This is from the LA Times blog:
Putting Swift with such a distinctive rock 'n' roll voice isn't the best showcase for her. Swift's appeal is her good-natured charm and simplicity, but she's also a flat vocalist.

I agree with this and other posters. I really like Taylor Swift, but she is pretty bad live. I wasn't happy with that performance, but I loved seeing and hearing Stevie. :) Sadly, I've seen nothing but bad comments on other music boards about this performance. Thankfully, many said Stevie was the only good part of it.

Why does Stevie so frequently sing with these girls? I can understand wanting to participate in today's music scene, but why pick these weepy, whiny girls whose artistic personalities haven't matured much beyond the high school talent show? Nicks thrives with the seasoned pros: Tom Petty, Chris Isaak, Dylan, David Crosby, Sheryl Crow, Natalie Maines -- not these mushy teenagers who haven't developed into anything substantial yet.

I knew, I just KNEW, going into this that Stevie was going to hold back as to not overpower Taylor and its so obvious that that is what she was doing. She should have just made a decision and took over that whole thing. You can tell she knew it wasn't going well. At least if she had, the story would have been that Stevie out-sings her and the performance would have been saved.

I gotta say, that grammies performance was hideous. I feel sorry for Taylor. Why would she do this? And WHY would Stevie do this!?!? Poor Stevie!! Taylor isn't good live. I've seen a few things of her singing live and she's just never good!!

Vanessa Carlton I think IS good...but hasn't quite...got there. Or she was there, but then couldn't maintain it. But I honestly like her a lot and think she's truly talented.

If I were one of these young girls, I'd LOVE to sing with Stevie, but ONLY if I was already good enough...I wouldn't want it to be this huge big contrast, like with Taylor for instance. I'd want to be more equal somehow...I don't know HOW, but just somehow. lol

Regardless of anything, Stevie is getting a HUGE amount of press out of this. Just do a google search... tons and tons of articles, and there's even a scrolling Twitter ticker with everyone's opinions on the performance (all of which are ripping Taylor to shreds). She and Taylor's picture was the headline on MSNBC just now too. And Stevie is the 8th biggest google search of the day so far :D.

Yeah, and Rhiannon is the 72nd biggest search and Taylor Swift/Stevie Nicks is the 36th biggest search. Someone is going to sale some records out of this pair up.

Taylor Swift will never forget Stevie Nicks. She is getting creamed by everybody. That duet was the worste performance of the night and it is being used to start a Taylor Swift backlash.

Unfortunately, if her performance on every other award show hasn't done it for her, I don't think this one will either. The CMA performance was horrible, even worse than this one, and yet she still managed to finagle a duet with Stevie on the Grammys.

When did Stevie work with Courtney Love? The only thing I believe they've ever done together is that Spin interview.

Courtney Love wrote Stevie a couple of songs for TISL that never made the cut.

I also think Stevie sees herself in these girls. A kid with a guitar, singing about things a kid with a guitar would sing about. She always chooses the ones who write their own stuff. She's trying to help, which is kudos to her. She doesn't need to be in the spotlight, she's had it all. I think she wouldn't like people beating up on Taylor. Although I agree she was off key and not up to snuff to doing a duet with Stevie. I wondered if when Stevie was looking over at Taylor singing and playing if she didn't see herself years and years ago. That goes for all the 'girls' she sings with.

I agree, I have no clue why she's working with these girls. I don't even think she needs to be paired with seasoned pros but she just sounds wrong with all these girly voices. The night before at the pre-Grammys event Sheryl was singing with Neko Case. I'd love to see Stevie sing with someone like that. Unfortunately she's probably not high profile enough for Stevie to consider it.

I'm going to get creamed for this, but I think Courtney Love is a great lyricist. Maybe Stevie could reach out to Courtney a little. I know Courtney is the creepy, obsessive type, but she was the first in the 90s to get the Stevie Nicks ball rolling when no one was talking about Stevie. She put Stevie in the news when grundge ruled the day—sung her praises, recorded Gold Dust Woman.

It's obvious that Courtney is going to die. It may be her own fault, but Stevie had a problem with addiction herself. Love already lost her daughter. Maybe working with her idol would help her get out of her hole and gain some self-esteem and get better.

Just a thought....

Well, Stevie will work with Taylor, Vanessa, Jesse Camp, Crow, Maines and a host of others but not Courtney.

Courtney doesn't have a great voice, yet, she's churned out some great albums. Stevie's voice has tanked. It seems like Courtney knows how to take voice out of the equation and a collaboration between might really work. Her songs are powerful and Nicks could sing all of her songs.

I only wonder what Stevie was thinking while they were singing and TS was so off key,it was unbearable. I knew, I just KNEW, going into this that Stevie was going to hold back as to not overpower Taylor and its so obvious that that is what she was doing. She should have just made a decision and took over that whole thing. You can tell she knew it wasn't going well. At least if she had, the story would have been that Stevie out-sings her and the performance would have been saved.

she really did hold back didn't she
it's so obvious
can u imagine if she just piped up and blew it out of the water....
everyone would be SLAMMING her

You know, if I managed the grammys, I would have had Pink and Stevie do a "Mean, If You Ever Did Believe, and Please Don't Leave Me" melody. I mean if they really wanted to make a great pair, Pink would have been the perfect one.

From TVguide.com

5. Worst Tribute: Taylor Swift stumbles through "Today Was a Fairy Tale" before inviting Stevie Nicks to the stage to butcher/duet on Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon." Just when the 35-plus crowd is ready to storm the stage and stop Swift from destroying their memories, Nicks saves the day by adding a dose of musicality to an ill-advised, slowed-down rendition of Swift's "You Belong with Me." Let the grown-up lead, kiddo.

I don't really have an opinion of Taylor Swift -- she's managed to stay largely off my radar, without me being completely oblivious to her existence -- but gee, the barbs just keep coming at her don't they?

Vocally she was pretty ordinary, no doubt, but whoever advised her or supported her decision to duet with Stevie was plainly off their rocker. Regardless of the stick she's getting, I hope she at least enjoyed the thrill of singing with one of her idols.

With the huge amount of comment this is generating, well, everywhere, I wonder if Stevie is feeling a wee bit guilty about the whole thing? All she's done is (inadvertently) show Taylor up and open the floodgates of public ridicule, when I'm sure she only had the best of intentions in performing with her. Still, there is that small, evil part of me that wonders if Stevie foresaw that the entire thing would be a disaster from Taylor's standpoint and would inevitably lead to favourable press for Stevie, if only because she was the half of the performance that wasn't a train wreck.

Anyway, I thought Stevie sounded fine. I wouldn't say great, but that's because she didn't get to blast it out. She certainly seemed to be holding back to avoid stealing Taylor's thunder (for better or worse).

Loved hearing the album version too for a change -- there's definitely a part where Stevie goes to sing "taken by the sky". She catches herself, but not all that well -- all my life I’ve never seen a woman taken by the skin either.

Ouch.

My theory is this:

Taylor never claimed to be the greatest singer, she only claimed she was blessed enough to be enjoying what she loves to do most in this world!

Being able to "sing live" well isn't something that is necessarily required of anyone, even in the passed! Look at Springsteen, DAVE MATTHEWS (thats right I said it), Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Burt Bacharach - great songwriters but can't sing a note!

I think we all just need to lay off Taylor. She writes most of her songs by herself, a la Stevie Nicks. Yes, she messed up last night, but she just got Album of The Year at 20 years old! There is A LOT of hype going on with her but for ONCE it is well deserved! She is not prancing around showing off her body or acting like a tramp, her only crime is singing off key!

Stevie was amazing up there, our girl did great! She maintained her dignity and respect up there, and I find it funny how most of you were worried about what SHE would do, what SHE would wear, how SHE would sound...and now that it was Taylor who messed up the relief you are all feeling is palpable...but there is no need to bash this young girl who has broken so many records with her songwriting talent, just because she threw Rhiannon off key! It could have been WAY worse, and we all know it!

Erica

Well, during a live performance that's kind of a substantial crime.

If Taylor is aware of her vocal limitations she probably shouldn't agree to go onstage with someone, who despite her age and loss of range, could still easily blow her out of the water at any given moment.

I think people as a whole are over Taylor Swift and this was the last straw. I've seen plenty of bashing, WTFs and "aren't we over her yet?"s from non-Stevie fans last night. Besides a crazy Taylor fangirl on my twitter feed, I didn't see anyone who was pleased with her album of the year win.

Well, that is your opinion along with everyone else who is sick of her. She wrote 90% of those songs by herself with no aide from anyone, and they are tastefully and maturely done. You are correct in stating that plenty of non-Stevie fans can't stand her, but most of them haven't really given her a chance either since lots of people hate the "hype" and "mainstream" that goes along with her, which isn't really her doing at all, but the media's.

You are correct in stating she was out of her league last night, but even if she was singing alone she would have been off-key, too. Singing isn't really what Taylor is known for. It isn't what A LOT of today's performers are known for, but at least Taylor stays true to herself, she writes her own music and makes her own choices in such a gruelling Hollywood world. I'd take her any day over Britney, or Lindsay Lohan, or Hilary Duff or Miley Cyrus.

I am happy for Taylor, her album of the year win was well-deserved, her themed album was great example of today's songwriting talent. DO NOT GET ME WRONG, I could never sit there and watch that girl perform live or spend money on seeing her live, but I love her songs, her songwriting and her albums, not to mention I just like that she sticks to her guns. Good for her.

But anyway...Stevie is what matters and she did a great job last night regardless, despite all of the little faith a lot of you had in her before the performance occurred last night. I am sure that once all of this Taylor bashing goes away, the ledge will go right back to its usual programming of bashing everything that Stevie does, wears or sings.

Smiles :)

Interesting that she partied with Interscope (Jimmy Iovine's home) and not WB. I wonder if Mick was around as well...

I had every reason to believe that Gaga had to be a big Stevie fan... after all, she is basically a gay man with the wrong plumbing. I just hope that Mama was able to console the little Gagster over her total shutout at the Grammys.

The performance was mediocre at best. Taylor, as always, sounded absolutely horrible. Stevie was okay, but nothing brilliant. She looked fine.

What is more upsetting is that Stevie has been relegated to singing back-up and playing tambourine for a 20-year old. But really, Stevie has no one to blame but herself. She's released one non-compilation solo album in the past 15 years and continues to drag the same set list out on the road every year. If Allison Krauss can record with Robert Plant, and if Emmylou can record with Mark Knopfler, why can't Stevie do something similar? I suppose she's satisfied cashing in on nostalgia tours year after year. Sometimes, I just want to shake her.

She's ALWAYS horrible...she just can't sing, period...her albums are done with studio trickery...thank God for ProTools pitch correction.

Fortunately, Waddy Wachtel was there to play the "Rhiannon" riff correctly or Taylor Swift's guitarist might've botched that, too.

...I just hope that Mama was able to console the little Gagster over her total shutout at the Grammys.

Not "total", not "shutout"...she (he...whatever) won 2 Grammys last night.

liked this...

Witchy...and Pitchy: Poor Stevie Nicks had to hear Taylor Swift shoot for the moon--and miss--on the harmonies on "Rhiannon"--which had to hurt. But the veteran players backing them, including the revered Waddy Wachtel, were grooving extra hard in the background, almost willing Taylor to stay on key.

If you want a Grammy duet - Vanessa Carlton and Stevie with Circle Dance - yeah I know it would have nothing to do with Grammys but it would fit with theme of young up and coming and their icon - and it would have been one of the best of the night. I can't listen to that song without choking up. I know neither wrote it but they both deliver it with passion!!!!

I was kind of hoping I'd feel better about things after getting some sleep...but no, that performance looks just as bad today as it did last night. I feel awful for Stevie. She must be horrified. She'll never say anything bad about Taylor but I would love to hear the thoughts that have been running through her mind since it happened. I never understood the whole Taylor Swift thing anyway. Her songs are annoying, and I've thought that since before I'd ever even heard the name Taylor Swift. They all sound the same. Stevie definitely shouldn't have been on stage singing the lyrics to You Belong With Me...they're way too juvenile for a grown woman to sing.

I think Taylor is sweet and I do have respect for the fact that she does write her own stuff, which is more than can be said for a lot of people, but she better step up her game because if this is all she's got, she won't last long. People will get bored. She's already proven that she can't perform live for s***. If she isn't able to evolve as a songwriter, she's screwed. Frankly, I think the number of Grammy's she won last night says more about the state of the music industry than it does about her.

Stevie looks super old! What happened?? She looked better last March when I met her...bad lightening maybe?? Hmm :/

I thought she looked pretty good, actually. Although the 500 layers of BLACK chiffon didn't help her figure.

Yikes, they sounded AWFUL together! :distress:

At least Stevie looked good tho...

Agreed.

I disagree. I thought Stevie sounded old. Yes, Taylor was off pitch, but Stevie was no better. She looked good. There harmonies on Rhiannon sucked.

I thought Stevie sounded like Stevie - from what I could hear of her over Taylor's painful squawking.

This is from the LA Times blog:
Putting Swift with such a distinctive rock 'n' roll voice isn't the best showcase for her. Swift's appeal is her good-natured charm and simplicity, but she's also a flat vocalist.

I couldn't agree more.

Exactly.

Flo Rida and Liddy
i LOVE this post!!!!!!1

Stevie needs to quit cosinging with lil popettes
hell, all women in general.
stick with the male singers stevie.

Agreed.

I was so embarrassed for Taylor. She was really struggling with the harmonies. Poor Stevie too - it must be really frustrating to sing with someone so off key.The way she was looking at Taylor during Rhiannon, it was like she was trying to will her not to suck. But sadly, that was impossible.

That's what bugged me most - Stevie's such a good harmonizer, this must have been killing her inside. it must have hurt her everything. :(

Regarding the comments above, I didn't think Stevie looked "old", I just wish they would have done her hair wavy like Soundstage and maybe had her wear something differently. Next to Taylor's teenage skin, Stevie just looked a little soft, but that is better than stretched.

I KNEW you'd be here with a hair review.

Why does Stevie so frequently sing with these girls?I can understand wanting to participate in today's music scene, but why pick these weepy, whiny girls whose artistic personalities haven't matured much beyond the high school talent show? Nicks thrives with the seasoned pros: Tom Petty, Chris Isaak, Dylan, David Crosby, Sheryl Crow, Natalie Maines -- not these mushy teenagers who haven't developed into anything substantial yet.

Spot on, David. There are a few newer/emerging/less established artists that IMO merit a collaboration (Pink comes to mind, Kelly Clarkson; I would love a Patty Griffin collaboration in theory but I don't think their voices are that well suited for eachother.) Why she's choosing the ones that she actually does end up singing with, I don't know. Is it her decision/idea? Management?

I wouldn't say Sheryl's career is in the gutter, she's still relevant. On the other hand, Vanessa Carlton is probably getting used to the smell down there by now.

HA!

Nothing against Taylor Swift, but I never thought I'd hear Stevie Nicks singing, "And I'm on the bleachers!" I'm glad Stevie got some exposure, but I wish it would have been with someone else. It's funny that Stevie STILL seems to get nervous doing these TV gigs after all these years, bless her heart. She did ok though, in my opinion.

~jamie

1) I thought the same thing "I wear Tshirts..." Um no, Stevie, you don't. You were the popular girly-girl that Taylor's bitching about in that tune. :)

2) Agreed on getting herself "out there" again.

That's my point, which you made better than I did. Wrong vocal pairings, IMO. The main reason that I brought up Pink & Kelly Clarkson is that I think their voices would sound awesome with Stevie.

i think stevie likes to think of herself as the fairy godmother for all these young starlets. unfortunately, most of them suck.

Yup.

I happen to agree.

sheryl and natalie are both rockers, and at one point, so was stevie. vanessa and taylor? not so much. watching taylor try to wrap her voice around the rhiannon melody was unfortunate.

You got it.

^stevie looks scared.

why would someone post this.

Seriously. Who's brilliant f*cking idea was this anyway?

I would kill to be a fly on that wall. That's cool as hell. I'm still not totally on the Gaga bandwagon, but bitch is talented, writes catchy tunes AND can sing her ass off. I'd beg for a Gaga/La Nicks pairing, but Gaga certainly doesn't need Stevie.

Taylor Swift: Singing with Stevie Nicks is “A Fairy Tale”
February 1st, 2010 9:13 am / Author: Luisa Metcalfe

Grammy golden girl Taylor Swift sang with Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks at the awards ceremony last night in a performance the country-music queen described as an “honor.”

Clean-cut Taylor, 20, opened her performance with “Today Was a Fairytale” before announcing her duet partner, who is famed as much for her hard living as her distinctive, gravel-tinged voice.

“It’s a fairy tale and an honor to share the stage with Stevie Nicks,” said Taylor before launching into a duet of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon.”

“Stand Back” rocker Stevie, 61, then tapped her tambourine and sang backup on Taylor’s hit “You Belong With Me.”

Taylor was nominated for eight awards and won four, including best country album.

“I just keep thinking back to when you’re in second grade and you sing in the talent show for the first time and people joke around and say, ‘Maybe we’ll see you at the Grammys some day,’ she said in an emotional acceptance speech.

“But that just seems like an impossible dream. I just feel like I’m standing here accepting an impossible dream.”

Hits:

One literally hit was the poor lady singer from Lady Antebellum. She got buried in scrim when the stage hands dramatically released the transparent "small town" screen and it landed on her head. Ever the pro, she brushed it off and kept on singing after fixing her hair.

Misses:

Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks missed the mark and I don't get it. I love both of these women but their duets were a little off key and kind of uncomfortable. I feel like Taylor's often a little off when she sings live but this time she took Stevie down with her.

You have a point, but then I think of the stately Goldfish and the Ladybug lyrics and realized I would have thought it sweet if Doris Day or someone had sung that with Stevie when she was a little tyke. To everything there is a season. Turn, turn, turn.

Ryan Seacrest introduces Taylor Swift. OK, confession time, I have not jumped on the Swift bandwagon yet. Swift teams up with Stevie Nicks who she probably didn’t know who she was before tonight. Nicks looks good but she doesn’t look like she’s buying Swift’s cozying up. Ouch — Nicks reduced to a backup singer. Isn’t Swift just on the edge of 17? Poor Stevie.

And more than ever, today's biggest stars are those who embody powerful archetypes so well that a misplaced note or two may be kindly overlooked.

That last situation applies to Taylor Swift, who continued her winning streak by taking home album of the year for "Fearless," a recording that has seemingly won every available prize in the last year. Swift, 20, is a songwriter; she thanked her record label for "letting me write every song on my album" while accepting one of her awards.

But as well-crafted as her platinum-selling tales of suburban high school life are, it's Swift's persona that really sells. This smart young woman comes across as a perky, living American Girl doll, and that appealing version of traditional young womanhood, not her music, is at the heart of her stardom.

Her singing certainly can't be credited. Appealing enough on record, it always seems to let her down live. Swift gave a strikingly bad vocal performance at Staples Center on Sunday, sounding tinny and rhythmically flat-footed as she shared the microphone with the distinctive Stevie Nicks. Swift's inability to match or support Nicks as they worked through a medley of each woman's hits stood in stark contrast to the evening's other pairings, particularly soul man Maxwell's sensitive response to Roberta Flack and Lady Gaga's bravado turn with Elton John.

Dear Grammys, enough with the kooky pairings! Yes, it worked really well when you united Eminem and Elton John all those years ago. It was a true example of music bringing people together. But this year's many matches felt more like mis-mash-ups. Taylor Swift's duets with Stevie Nicks were embarrassing for both of them, and Lady Gaga's pairing with Elton John — is he now the go-to duet partner? — didn't quite jell.

Ricketiest, But Still Most Entertainingest Duet
Before she was shocked -- shocked! -- to win Album of the Year, Taylor Swift worked her charming virginal magic alongside Stevie Nicks on the Fleetwood Mac classic "Rhiannon" (not "Rihanna") and a country-fried take on her own "You Belong With Me." That she was painfully out of tune doing so took a backseat to the Tweetsplosion of Taylor-Swift-blowing-coke-up-Stevie-Nicks'-ass jokes that inevitably ensued. Bonus factoid: That emo-bang'd banjo player was, in fact, Butch Walker.

During the Grammy Awards 2010, Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks did a duet performance that has made everyone amazed. It was a great combination between Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks. A legend and a soon to be legend performing. Earlier this evening, Swift has thought of Nicks as her hero. She opened her performance with a song called “Today was a Fairytale,” and after a quick version of it, Nicks came out singing Mac’s “Rhiannon”.

Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks’ duet performance ended after they both sang “You Belong With Me” with a different version. Swift was playing the guitar and Nicks had a tambourine. It was a great team up.

Grammy performances were nothing memorable
Monday, February 01, 2010
By Scott Mervis, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

For better or worse -- mostly, worse -- Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich went out of his way to make sure the Grammy performances were unlike anything we've seen from these artists on all those other shows.

Sorry to be negative, but ...

Best glimpse of dystopia: Lady Gaga and Elton John looked like they were on the way to a Jetsons convention when the apocalypse struck. The music was far more tame, a polite piano face-off of "Speechless" and "Your Song," after a touch of "Poker Face."

Dizziest performer: Pink, a vision in white, was on the way to putting us to sleep early until she turned into a nearly nude member of Cirque, singing, spinning and taking a bath all at once.

Band most likely to star in a remake of the "Sgt. Pepper" movie: The Black Eyed Peas want to be so 3008, with their robots dancers, but those black uniforms also screamed Beatles fetish.

Best posse: Forget the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye. The R&B diva marched down the aisle with the riot squad from the G-20 summit for militant renditions of "If I Were a Boy" and Alanis Morrissette's "You Oughtta Know."

Biggest trainwreck: Jamie Foxx's joint with T-Pain and Doug E. Fresh wasn't chaotic enough, so it needed Slash to lay a screaming guitar on top.

Best bleepin' rap medley: The Eminem/Lil Wayne/Drake/Travis Barker mash-up that kept tripping the censors. Or was that my TV?

Best display of red, white and blue charm: The Zac Brown opening with an a cappella version of "America the Beautiful" before moving on to some serious pickin' and grinnin', with Leon Russell as Father Time mixed in the middle.

Worst audition for Fleetwood Mac: Taylor Swift cracking on the high notes of "Rhiannon" in a duet with Stevie Nicks. Worse yet, Mac diva had to hang around for a duet on "You Belong With Me," even though it was clear she didn't.

Best display of democracy: The ageless Bon Jovi doing, by popular vote, "Livin' on a Prayer," a song that may not have thrilled people but certainly didn't offend them.

Best health update: Soul man Charlie Wilson working "I beat prostate cancer! ... and I'm up for two Grammys!" into his pre-telecast jam.

Most impressive note: Andrea Bocelli outgunning Art Garfunkel on "Bridge Over Troubled Water," with Mary J. Blige as Simon.

Best Joe Cocker impersonation: Dave Matthews elbow-dancing while singing "just you and me baby" with about a thousand musicians behind him.

Schlockiest moment by a formerly credible punk band: Fans of "Dookie" might have hurled watching the once-great Green Day turn an already bland anthem, "21 Guns," into Broadway pap with the cast of the musical. Couldn't they have just done "Longview"?

Best tribute to Michael Jackson: The fact that, with Smokey Robinson, Usher, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson on stage for the 3-D "Earth Song," the best voice by far was Michael's.

how relevant is Fleetwood Mac?

or maybe the question should be, how relevant is MTV?

when writing about the Taylor Swift/Stevie Nicks Grammy duet (the cover of "Rhiannon" is truly, truly awful), mtv.com called Nicks "the former Fleetwood Mac singer," not only in their text but in the sub-heading as well (remember when MTV stood for Music Television?).

did Stevie quit again and everyone forgot to tell me or does mtv.com have music writers (in this case Eric Ditzian) who fail to possess even an elementary knowledge of music history?

Dear Grammys, enough with the kooky pairings! Yes, it worked really well when you united Eminem and Elton John all those years ago. It was a true example of music bringing people together. But this year's many matches felt more like mis-mash-ups. Taylor Swift's duets with Stevie Nicks were embarrassing for both of them, and Lady Gaga's pairing with Elton John — is he now the go-to duet partner? — didn't quite jell.

From The Buffalo News:

“Music’s biggest night,” they call it. Well, it was big, all right. But size isn’t everything, apparently.

The 52nd annual Grammy Awards brought most of pop’s big guns together inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday evening. Comedian Stephen Colbert put it best when, prior to announcing the winner of the Song of the Year Grammy (to Beyonce, naturally), he praised the evening for celebrating “one of our most important rights as Americans—the right for celebrities to congratulate each other.”

Hilarious! When the camera scanned the first few rows of the crowd, however, no one seemed to think Colbert was too funny.

A sense of humor was hugely necessary to sit through the whole spectacle, though. Within the first 30 minutes of the show, we’d heard rehashed ‘80s dance pop, punk rock played as show tunes, more ‘80s dance pop, and Beyonce covering Alanis Morissette.

If you thought about all of the exciting things that happened in music this year—big movements in electronic sound within a vibrant DJ culture; a host of inventive and incredibly successful jam bands; a burgeoning new singer/songwriter movement, and a niche in alternative music that is marrying pop and rock convention with elements of the avant garde, progressive music, ambient sounds and various indigenous influences —watching the Grammys might have made you wanna cry. It’s always better to laugh, though. This presentation was so far away from anything resembling reality that it’s tough to get too worked up about it.

After all, the show kicked off with a bizarre performance from Lady Gaga, who popped up on a riser looking like the love child of Marilyn Manson and Donatella Versace, performing her multinominated “Poker Face,” and then dueting with Elton John for a truly strange medley of Gaga’s “Speechless” and Elton’s “Your Song.” Personally, I thought Elton was better when he worked it with Eminem a few Grammys back.

Green Day took the stage to perform “21 Guns,” from their excellent “21st Century Breakdown” album, joined by the cast of the musical “American Idiot,” which will open on Broadway in March. In the context of the album, the ballad works quite well, surrounded as it is by some well-produced and polished, but still gnarly, punk rock. Here, however, it sounded like something from Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Cats.” The band looked a little bit confused and uncomfortable. Which was nice, because that’s exactly how I felt.

Trotting Stevie Nicks out to sing “Rhiannon” with Taylor Swift was meant, one assumes, to suggest that Swift is to her generation what Nicks was and is to hers. That was tough to swallow once Swift started singing the Fleetwood Mac tune next to the gravel-voiced but still spot-on Nicks—Swift was out of tune and her tone was thin and reedy. Swift fared better on her own when the pair went into the younger singer’s “You Belong To Me,” though the nursery rhyme-like melody left Nicks without much to do.

OK, I quibble, but that’s because I care! One of the themes that ran like a thread throughout the evening was the idea of the “mash-up”—an interesting tangent explored by DJs who would intermingle two widely varied songs with a new beat providing continuity. This was big news about 10 years ago. The Grammys took this idea and applied it to this year’s spectacle, which found artists with little in common joining forces and performing mostly ill-conceived “mash-up medleys” of each other’s tunes.

The nadir of this tendency may well have been the Jamie Foxx-T-Pain-Slash debacle, which found the Guns ‘n’ Roses guitarist blowing the solo from that band’s “November Rain” while Foxx cavorted and rapped in some sort of gladiator’s outfit, and T-Pain did his auto-tune thing, resplendent in white tux with tails. Seriously.

This was all immensely entertaining, in a perverse sort of way, and, of course, over-the-top histrionics have always been a big part of popular music. But the Grammys were so pop-centric this year that they offered an unfairly biased view of what happened in music during the year in question.

“Popular music” today is an umbrella term that is meant to cover pretty much any form that isn’t classical or jazz. The Grammys, however, concentrated almost all of their attention on pure “pop” — the most mainstream bubble-gum stuff being made. Beyonce, Swift, Lady GaGa and the Black Eyed Peas are in essence interchangeable — their differences are mainly of the surface variety. All deserve nominations in some category, but stuffing them into nearly every major slot was bogus.

It’s impossible to ignore that the music industry is in shambles. Sales are way down, and most of the truly creative music is being made outside of the mainstream industry itself — on stages, where bands ignored by the Grammys play to large, young, enthused crowds nightly; on independent labels that market directly to the fans through alternative means like My Space and Facebook; through live concert recordings which are traded freely or sold at a fraction of the cost of a major- label release. You never would’ve known this from watching Sunday’s Grammy broadcast, where everyone was partying like it was 1989.

Once again, Colbert hit it squarely on the head. “You may be the coolest people in the world,” Colbert quipped. “But Susan Boyle, a 48 year-old cat lady in sensible shoes, outsold all of you.”

It’s time for the Grammys to hit us where we really live. For once.

Wow. Trying to ingest all this.

Ok. Heres how I see it. I don't really listen to that much new music, a little but not too much mainstream. But even I feel like I can see the impact that Taylor Swift has had on the music industry over the past year. Yeah, it may be crap, but people dig it.

I get the point of this performance, it was Taylor singing with her idol and to me it was so special. I got goosebumps when stevie just emerged behind her. I personally, loved it. The even better part: having my college friends raving over Stevie!

I doubt Stevie was that mortified about Taylor being off key. She did get a chance to rehearse with the girl first, so it probably came as no surprise to her.

I cringe when I hear Taylor Swift sing live. If there is anyone that SHOULD lip-syched, it's Taylor Swift. This is the second time that I've heard her sing live & OFF KEY. And I'm sure that she's a nice girl, but she's way over-rated. I'm glad Stevie sang with her though, but I wish Stevie could have sang louder to drown her out! :sorry:

They both sounded nervous and were both off-key. I think one reason why Taylor is getting ripped to shreds is because Rhiannon is a simple song to sing, and if she can't hit those notes, it really showcases the fact she can't sing.

I produced a singer in Nashville a couple of years ago....He was pretty good. except......problem was, he literally could NOT hear that he was consistently about a quarter tone flat.We had to autotune him....and he sounded fine.

Taylor Swifts recorded output is ALL autotuned. Being able to hear that you are flat or sharp is sort of an ingrained ability....I don't think it CAN be taught....The guy that I produced honestly could NOT hear that he was flat....Taylor Swift probably can't either...She writes cute material...but her recorded stuff SOUNDS good because it's all autotuned. A shame... because she's so likeable otherwise..;-)

P.S. It's VERY hard to harmonize with another singer who's got a pitch problem.....Stevie was doing her best to straighten Taylor up. I personally guarantee that SN is always in tune. In our day, you HAD to be able to (at least) sing in tune. People like songwriters Carol King or Bob Dylan got away with being "charmingly shaky" pitch-wise.....it was part of their persona. The thing is, their records were "charmingly shaky" too....Taylor Swifts recordings, in contrast are autotuned pitch-perfect.....Way too big a difference between live and recorded with Taylor. This creates "cognitive dissonance".....ouch !

Actually, Stevie was not off-key, she was trying to let Taylor lead, but she just couldn't. And Rhiannon is not a simple song to sing, in fact, Stevie herself has said that it is one of her more difficult songs and many other artists don't even go near it.

She was off-tune and Rhiannon doesn't require that much range. Taylor is still getting pummeled for her performance. However, Stevie is getting some much needed press and everyone is talking about how much they love her.

9:46pm: If you love Taylor Swift so much, Grammys, why don't you marry her?

9:47pm: Taylor Swift should get slimed, Double Dare-style. Seriously. Bucket of slime on her head.

9:48pm. Oh, but don't slime Stevie Nicks. Take Taylor to school, Stevie. Take her to a school where she has to stop singing your song. Also, Grammy people: You got Stevie Nicks to perform, and you're wasting her by letting Taylor Swift drown her out with off-key wailing on her own song? Shameful.

It does actually; for example, the line "All Your Life" requires some range and someone with limited vocal ability cannot pull it off (like Taylor showed us last night). Over the years, Stevie had to lower the key to accommodate her changing voice.

There was an interesting piece in the "New York Times" asking whether it was more important to win a Grammy or appear on the telecast. In other words, do you remember who won Album of the Year or do you remember Pink flying high in the sky? (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/arts/music/29grammys.html)

For those expressing displeasure with the Grammy telecast, I remind you that we no longer live in a monoculture. It was a very brief period, two decades at most, when mainstream and alternative merged, when MTV dictated the hits and radio fell in line behind. But now, you get to choose what you want to listen to from a plethora of choices. So if you tune in a telecast like this you're dumbfounded. Who are these people? Does anybody really care?

Beyonce prancing. Black Eyed Peas marching. Eminem and two guys you've never heard of ranting. Is this music? What kind of hole have we fallen down?

Relax. To say the Grammys are a reflection of music today is akin to saying what airs on NBC defines America. It doesn't. People have more passion for niche channels like Discovery than those trying to appeal to everybody networks.

But there's a limited channel universe. And the networks bought up the niche channels. What's going on in the music business?

Chaos.

What's ironic is that NARAS was the ultimate niche operation. What I mean by this was there was a category for every genre, it delved deep into music some were passionate about, but few cared about, which is exactly what's happening today. But the TV show is the opposite of this. With fewer awards given and only the most mainstream acts featured. Now is the time for NARAS to flourish. But beholden to the old major label structure that is crumbling, NARAS is teetering too. Overspending while membership is declining. Isn't this like trying to get people to buy albums on CD when you can cherry-pick the desirable singles on Napster?

But leading would require vision. And NARAS has none.

But who gives a **** about NARAS anyway.

I'll say that I was impressed with the Michael Jackson tribute. No, not his kids, who certainly aren't his biologically, and acquitted themselves quite well, but the performances... Everybody could sing! Could almost make you a Celine Dion fan. Especially after experiencing Taylor Swift.

How awful was she?

Dreadful.

"Fearless" deserved to win Album of the Year. I was glad it did. Scuttlebutt was it was DMB's year, but to say "GrooGrux" is good is to be a tie-dyed hippie hanging out in the parking lot before a show that features great playing but mediocre material. "GrooGrux" sold to a small coterie, most people don't care. But Taylor Swift is as mainstream as you can get. Triumphing in two formats. Speaking her truth to her audience. I love "Fearless". You can play it from start to finish, again and again, it's honest. But last night's performance...

Do you remember Billy Squier's pink video? Which killed his career overnight? Take a peek: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR0j7sModCI What was a hard rocker doing prancing around in a pink tank top? What was a neophyte artist doing sharing a stage with a legend who made it before auto-tune, before studio tricks could make anybody a singer?

I don't need to analyze the performance. (Hell, what I don't get is how Taylor rearranged her own hit song.) But what I am interested in is the impact. Because now, everybody knows that Taylor Swift can't sing. Is this what they'll remember?

Now unlike Billy Squier's pink video, there won't be endless repetition on MTV. And one can question how much of the target audience saw this performance. But the cognoscenti did, and to what degree do they now want to distance themselves from Ms. Swift?

In other words, did Taylor Swift kill her career overnight?

I'll argue she did. Oh, I'm not fully convinced of that, but let's start from this position.

She'll be even further hated in Nashville (and what kind of ****ed up world do we live in where the CMAs are better than the Grammys?) I'd love to say whored out Top Forty radio stations will ignore her, but this is doubtful, still...

In one fell swoop, Taylor Swift consigned herself to the dustbin of teen phenoms. Who we expect to burn brightly and then fade away. From New Kids On The Block to Backstreet Boys to Miley Cyrus. A wall is created, stating you can't come any further. Debbie Gibson can appear in shows on Broadway, but she can't have a hit record, the powers-that-be won't let it happen.

Taylor's too young and dumb to understand the mistake she made. And those surrounding her are addicted to cash and are afraid to tell her no. But last night Taylor Swift SHOULD have auto-tuned. To save her career.

They say it's easy to fake it in the twenty first century.

But one thing we know is the truth will always come out.

It's hard to be a singer if you can't sing.

Ultimately, we want our stars to be genuine. Without this credibility, your time atop the charts is brief.

Taylor Swift shortened her career last night. And since she says she calls all her own shots, she has to shoulder the blame. Yes, her dream came true, she made it, she's a star, but the real test is longevity. Elton John can play with GaGa decades later. Will Taylor Swift be duetting with the stars of the 2030s? Doubtful.

She is fine at the studio version level. Who cares about live? I'm not going fork over money to see her. She's a talented songwriter. Who would want to hear a song written by Tim Mcgraw or Reba? They are manufactured in some way too.

I was so embarrassed for Taylor. She was really struggling with the harmonies. Poor Stevie too - it must be really frustrating to sing with someone so off key. The way she was looking at Taylor during Rhiannon, it was like she was trying to will her not to suck. But sadly, that was impossible.

LOL. Taylor's voice was not a good match for Rhiannon to say the least. Good to see most people agree Stevie was the one who came out of that looking good. Swift is from my hometown too. Yikes.

Ok just saw this on Youtube.

Much has been said about Taylor Swifts "out of tune-ness", but certainly this didn't do Stevie any favors, grumbling a few deep harmony parts.

It's nice that she's prepared to show up just to lend younger artists her support, but for herself, she doesn't to do this.

Today and Last Night...

yeah so that was weird, but fun. here’s what happened. you know the whole T Swift cover i did, right? well we all know she liked it and Twittered about it awhile back. she called me last week and wanted to know if she could do my version of her song, and would i come play it with her. i said “yes”. i then said, “only if i can play my banjolin”. she said “yes”. it was a date. then i go to rehearsals and Stevie Nicks walks up to me and says “hi”. i say, “holy ****”. we rehearse a bit, and then do it again at the Staples Center. i figured there was no way i was gonna get any camera time with Taylor AND Stevie up there, but i blew the camera guy, and he gave me some good angles. all in all, a pretty surreal night. fun to hear my version of it being played and hearing the legendary Waddy Wachtel’s guitar amp blowing up my ears onstage. he is awesome. so i woke up and said, “awesome”. and now i am tired.

Much has been said about Taylor Swifts "out of tune-ness", but certainly this didn't do Stevie any favors, grumbling a few deep harmony parts.

It's nice that she's prepared to show up just to lend younger artists her support, but for herself, she doesn't to do this.

stating the obvious aren't I.

I think the whole point of this was that this was Taylor's moment and Stevie was there to share it with her, not completely take all the attention. You can tell Stevie was holding back the full power of her voice because, if she hadn't, she would have blown TS off the stage. Also, she was trying to harmonize with someone who absolutely can't sing. I think Stevie sounded fine, especially considering she was holding back. In a way, this was a no win situation for her. If she had made the decision standing up there that Taylor was ruining it and put on a full performance, people would have b*tched about her stealing Taylor's limelight. Instead, she tried to stick it out and make it work the way it was supposed to, and people are going to b*tch that her performance wasn't good enough. Fortunately for her, most are in agreement that she wasn't the problem on stage last night.

I agree, it was Taylor Swift's moment that she decided to share with Stevie Nicks. It's a gracious tip of the hat to give to Stevie. Still, it was an odd mix--Taylor Swift the Queen of Tween, matched up with the Road Tested, Road Warrior, PROVEN, everlasting Stevie Nicks on one of her best known songs. I was happy to see Stevie up there on the Grammy's show--just because I haven't seen her LIVE in a while. I was happy to see Waddy and the white Les Paul, knocking them dead. I was shocked to hear the off pitched Taylor Swift--felt sorry for her. It's a shame, as others have said, that Stevie was singing the low harmonies on her own song. I don't like to see Stevie in a passive role like that on her music EVER. It would have been fine if Stevie did lead on "Rhiannon" and back up on Taylor's work. That might have worked out fine. I don't think Stevie or Waddy lost a thing by doing the performance. I was happy to see them. But next time I see them, I'd rather see Taylor as the guest. ;) Come on Stevie. Get us a new album. Soon.
