View Full Version : The Different Eras of The Ledge

Alright, we've discussed our favorite eras of the Mac and its members at various points, and it got me thinking! The Ledge has been around for what.... 10 years or something? In that stretch of time, the dynamic, and most prominent members have changed, come and gone and whatnot. So I was wondering, if we were to look at the Ledge's very eclectic history, how many era would we break it into, and how long did they run???? This will be interesting to see what people have to say... I haven't been here THAT terribly long, so I can't really say much, but to me it seems that within the past 6 months or so, we have gained a lot of new members, most of them fairly younger.
What all do you have to say about the Eras of The Ledge????
Much Love,
Ethan

Well young Ethan.....I would have to say The Ledge reached it's peak when I came into the picture. I guess you could consider me the "Stevie" of the forum. haha. So that means....The Ledge is having it's best era ever right at this moment.

It's all a hazy mess to me, to be honest. I don't think of it in terms of eras. Every now and then, someone will bring up a name I've long forgotten... but I've always been terrible with the names. To this day, I still don't recall, oh... 80% of your real names.? :sorry:

Bekka? hahahhaha. Nope. Not the Bekka type at all.
But anywho. I love the era The Ledge is in right now. I don't know how it's been pre-June, back when I joined, but I like the diversity that we have. I was surprised to find so many younger fans, such as myself.
I have to admit....sometimes when Ledgies add me on Facebook, I don't exactly know or remember their Ledge names.

About 1997 I think. The present board about 2000.
I realise the main purpose of your statement is to flirt with the young girls here, but there's always been young people on The Ledge, Ethan, it's not a new thing. You, for instance, always reminded me of a Ledgie called Diamondsnake.

About 1997 I think. I think that's right. Maybe 1996. I remember Marty built a virtual Benifols on his (then new) Web site, Penguin, & told us all about it in IRC. A little while after that, I think he set up the Ledge, a single forum using the old Matt Wright script. Web boards were pretty new then, & I didn't think they were cool. All the cool cats, like Nepotista & Christopher Small, hung out on IRC, so I wouldn't even join the new Ledge. It took me another year or so.
You, for instance, always reminded me of a Ledgie called Diamondsnake.Oh, I remember that kid! He bugged me at first (in the nicest possible way), but he got cooler. And then he left! Where did he go? Maybe he found other bands to love.

Are you suggesting that Ethan starts threads to get the attention of/draw the attention to a selectively particular group of 2-3 17-20 year old girls he likes?!? No way!
You mean to say that his recent "dating in other states" thread wasn't just a passive agressive swipe at his unrequited desire for Christine L?

I think everyone in the world has a Facebook it seems. Not always a good thing. I hate some coworkers knowing my business.
This is something I read about Facebook the other day that holds the same opinion.
"In high school, I jealously watched my older sister on her laptop. She was on Facebook, a network exclusively for college kids. I couldn’t wait for college — if not for the freedom, then definitely for the college e-mail address that would grant my entry into the elite Facebook club.
Fast forward four years, and the world is on Facebook. When Facebook extended its membership to high school students, my friends and I gladly canceled our MySpace accounts and made the switch. When my 12-year-old brother logged in, I was miffed, but I put him on limited profile and moved on. When my friends’ hip mothers picked up on the trend, I ignored my pangs of annoyance and begrudgingly accepted their requests.
Now, my mom is begging me to let her create an account. Though I appreciate her asking my permission, I will deny her until I am 40. When my 80-year-old Grandma Hilda popped up as a “Friend I Might Know,” I lost it. What happened to my prized Facebook world, my online playground of funny photos and last night’s inside jokes plastered on my page for my friends and I to enjoy, away from the prying eyes of our nosy relatives?
What was once the addictive toy for college students has become the entire world’s new pastime.
Friends of mine have recently disabled their walls, made their pictures private or even removed their surname from their account, all in an effort to preserve their personal lives. We know that employers check out job applicants on the Internet. We must be responsible, but censoring ourselves makes Facebook lose part of its entertainment value.
I keep my pictures classy, avoid crude remarks and prevent anything even slightly offensive from surfacing on my Web space, but the online perks of adolescent life are over. What was once a simple, social networking tool for students has become a database exchange for professors, parents and even children. Social networking is now public networking."
I don't have Facebook either. Always seemed a bit labor intensive for my liking. :P
As for the Ledge, I'm new...I've missed so much of the fun :(

I too don't really think there have been definable eras in the Ledge. I've lurked since probably around '97-'98, but didn't join until '01 at JohnnyStew's urging. There is definitely a hugely different dynamic here than there was 10 years ago. Back at the turn of the millennia () the board was hugely cliquish and confrontational, and that's why I avoided joining up for so long. It's always been the single best source of information on the 'net though. Unfortunately, except for some long-termers like David and ChiliD, much of the deep well of knowledge on the Ledge has since moved on. There were a lot of crazy knowledgeable people here at one time, and now much of that has been lost. Not that I don't enjoy the newer crop of fans here... I do! In fact, the newer generation around here seems to be much more level headed and positive. But could I break the history of the Ledge into eras? Not really. Seems things started changing around here in '05ish, but that could just be me. All I know is that I'm enjoying the board now more than I ever have.

Maybe I'm just getting old but I can't remember a thing about the Ledge back in 1997/98 even though I was here. I think I lurked more than posted then though. Michele asked me when I rejoined what my user-name was back then, and I couldn't really remember...it was all so long ago.
The only people I remember from back in the day were mainly from the newsgroup before the trolls got it. I think I just about recall a couple of names but even those memories are kind of fuzzy.
I do remember I think that the ledge was closed down for a while when everything got a little too nasty.
I agree with other posters though that there are certainly a large number of younger fans these days, and I assume most of them them have become fans due to the reforming of Fleetwood Mac. I suspect back in 1997 when I was 23 years of age I would have been one of the younger members at the time

I'm not on Facebook, nor do I ever want to be!! Guess I'm sort of a 'keep to myself' type! Way back in '00 when I was first online, I used to go to the Fleetwood Mac Legacy page often. When I used to post on 'newsgroups', there was this girl named 'NiaRhiannon' who was often rude to me, so I stopped posting! I like the overall vibe of The Ledge. I like it that (usually) we can agree to disagree and have fun doing so!

I think I started lurking here somewhere around 1999-2000. There were some amazingly witty and intelligent people on The Ledge back then. I only joined because I wanted to view the photos that were being posted. :) I was intimidated by a lot of the people on The Ledge, but finally began posting here and there. I think it's great that Stevie has a younger fan base; who would have thought she could have pulled THAT off after all these years? I do wish some of the "older" posters would come back, though.

If things had been allowed to take their natural course, he would have been. However, there were some people who just kept coming to his rescue, over and over and over. Which, in turn, chased away many of the more interesting contributors to this Board. They just got fed up with being punished for calling him to the carpet.

It's funny that you mention snail mail pen pals because I am pretty sure we wrote to each other a few times back in the early 90s. I can understand how you feel about the social networking sites. I do have to say that I love this day and age that we are in now. Sometimes it can be scary and crazy but I have met so many great people this last year that it makes up for it. I do recall a thread a year or two ago in which one or more of the people you mentioned started a thread devoted to why they thought the Ledge was no longer relevant and, indirectly, the notion that everyone left posting on the Ledge was boring and that all the "cool" people had gone away. If it no longer floats your boat, fine. So just quietly disappear if you want to. There certainly was no need to insult everyone else left posting here. Yes, the Ledge has changed over the years, but so has the world. It's not better or worse... it's just different.

That's right, Christopher. He just reminds me of Ethan because he was young and very, very enthusiastic about Stevie and posted a lot. Although Chris was probably more defensive of her on the whole.
Apart from Lux and Tower, who were banned, I know a lot of the people you've mentioned just grew away from Fleetwood Mac, that was certainly the case with Jyqm, Sparky, Kate and Greg, and Paula is just busy with other things at the moment :) But I miss them posting too. I wonder what happened to Amber and Dissention, they were by far the biggest posters around here for quite a long time.

I'm not insulted because, quite honestly, I think half of those people were self-righteous douchebags- so their opinion means nothing to me. But just the notion that somehow they feel like they are better than the rest of us is what I find rather distasteful.

We all do that. Nobody dies of old age still being a rabid Fleetwood Mac fan.
But Fleetwood Mac is only the springboard here. It's conversation we share! We claver & converse! We interact! We argue! We poll! We opine! We polemicize! We aver! We avow! We abut! We animadvert on! And it's better than texting or telephoning because we construct artfully formulated sentences & paragraphs with which to create sense (& sometimes nonsense).
I don't understand how or why people grow away from that. It's what a good life consists of!

I didn't say it no longer floated your boat- I meant that hypothetically, in general, not in regards to you specifically. Mmmkay? :wavey:
I'm not insulted because, quite honestly, I think half of those people were self-righteous douchebags- so their opinion means nothing to me. But just the notion that somehow they feel like they are better than the rest of us is what I find rather distasteful.
Okay - gotcha. Sorry I misunderstood ya.

I figured that was the case for a lot of them. I lose interest in Fleetwood Mac too sometimes, but I still visit here. Old habits die hard, I guess.

I certainly understand growing away from Fleetwood Mac.
That's true David, but there was weird stuff going on for a while, with people being randomly banned (why was Mari banned for instance?), Lux's hate campaign against Amber and stuff like that. It's calmed down these days for sure. But there's always been drama surrounding The Ledge, it just comes and goes I guess.
Plus a lot of people continue the relationships they made here, just not on this board, since they don't care to talk about Fleetwood Mac anymore it makes sense.

But there's always been drama surrounding The Ledge, it just comes and goes I guess. There has indeed. It's part of the very fabric of life here (drama, that is). In a way, we adhere to sonata-allegro form in the sense that our dialog unfolds in time as discourse -- one that posits two (or more) often opposing speakers who variegate their expressions by commenting on the opposing speaker's views in terms that approximate literary ideas: exposition, rising action (development), climax, & coda (denoument).
Our best discussions here on the Ledge take sonata-allegro form to a Beethovenian extreme: The dialog begins in darkness, in torment, in self-doubt, & through sheer perseverance in developing all motivic expressions, at long last is bathed in the joyous light of reason & justice.

I don't post much but Ive viewed The Ledge for quite a few years. I do remember months on end, laughing so hard at some of the topics and replies. There are a lot of people I miss because they were just so damn funny. Others I'm glad they decided to leave or not post again. I too miss Dissention, Lux, Amber and quite a few others but there were also the members that eventually caused trouble. Anyone remember the guy that was stalking Stevie? He wanted to have her baby or something. There was also a member named "insane" that seemed like a nice person to begin with but turned out to be…. insane.
I miss the snail mail fanzines too. The velvet underground, Dreams, Rumours and even some that were around before these. I forget their names though.

I lurk here, sometimes. I chose to leave, because I didn't approve of the protection, that was given to Ethan. He was given carte blanche, to run amuck, while anyone who tried to call him on his poor posting habits, was reprimanded. I agree... that's why I didn't join the board until '01, and why I've only racked up 600 posts over the past 9 years (most of which have occurred the last couple of years). I've just always wanted a Model 1, because of LB. My intense fandom as a youth, and all that......even though I've got the money for one, I just can't see myself parting with it, until my house is paid off.

As for Model 1's... Unfortunately, Turner can't seem to get the customer satisfaction thing into his head. Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy. REALLY a nice guy... but, he drops the ball when it comes to following through with what is asked repeatedly of him. :distress: Oh well. What's done is done. Not the end of the world. ;)

There is a lot less going on in the Mac world the last couple of years than there was the first 5-10 years after the Dance. With every year since '97, the press coverage of the band and it's solo members has also slowly diminished... giving us a lot less to talk about. '97-'03 was a VERY exciting time to be a Mac/Stevie fan around here.
Completely unrelated (but brought up by HejiraNYC), there is a LOT less cliquish, mindless, self-congratulating banter than there used to be... something that took up a staggering amount of bandwidth. There used to be a "cool crowd" contingency here that spent all their time posting how wonderful and superior they were . Thank GOD those people have moved on! :woohoo:

I definitly feel the ledge has had many different eras. It ironically almost mirrors fleetwood mac as its almost unreconizable from it 2001 (1967 for FM) to now. Yet there are always a few Mick and Johns always there while many big posters (Sevie, Lindsey, Peter for the band or Amber, Dissention and others for the board) come and go.
Me, I've been here since 2001, always for one reason only, love of the band and disscussions of the band, up to the second updates on any news on the band. Everything else doesnt matter to me. Sure there've been some awseome people on the board and there are right now, but thats all very much secondary for me. I'm bnasically a perfect analogy of John McVie. Here in the background steadily posting occasionally making a meaningful comment. The newspaper reviewers almost never mention me like most of your lists of memerable ledgies past and present (except for you David thanks for the mention) but that doesnt bother me one bit as it wouldnt bother John.
And if i was forced to pick a best time at the ledge. 2003-2004 peaking with the original tusk survivor game!

I've been in and out over the past 18 months but I miss it so much when I'm away ... I think there's real friendship here among people :)
As for 'eras'... the major event I remember was the controversy over the 'other board' ... which I think was handled with remarkable good humour. Particularly when 'I'm with the banned' became something of a badge of honour!

For those who have been around for ages, if you were to break the Ledge into between 3-5 timeframes, what would the year ranges? I think 2006-2008 is one of the more recent, with 2009 being a new one with the bigger influx of newer members!

I think there should be an era devoted to irishgrl (or whatever her name was). She was a big basket of nutty goodness, and I always looked forward to her insane/inane posts. She is the real deal unibombtress hiding out in the wilds of California and probably ready to go postal at any moment. The **** she stirred in the chit chat forum is legend. And thanks to her, many of our erstwhile ledgies were banned while she went down in a blaze of hot messy glory herself. I would say the nuttiness absolutely reached a crescendo in 2006 (or 2007). And 2006-2008 coincidentally also happened to cover the era when the Ledge changed ownership, old timers left in droves and splinter groups emerged. It was a pretty chaotic period during which the Ledge practically went extinct, and it really wasn't until the first stirrings of the "Unleashed" tour started making the rounds that the Ledge started to pick up again. So you could almost call 2006-2008 the beginning of the end/a new beginning.

Ahh, the glory days :p. I remember the board changing ownership very well, and it was about that time I took a couple year break from the Ledge. Partly because I just got busy living life, but mainly because it seemed the people had just become so psychotic and mean. People started getting banned left and right, and I was like "I really don't need all this... I just wanna talk about songs!" I really am glad most of those people are gone though. Especially those horrible, bitchy, cliquish "cool crowd" Stevie fans. I won't name any names, but good God, there were some insufferable people. It was like the movie "Mean Girls"... but it was on a message board .
I still can't really break the Ledge down into eras. A huge new crop of fans came in every time the band or it's members released albums. I'd probably break it down into:
'97-'01 The Dance Era (I lumped Enchanted in there, b/c it rode the Dance's coattails IMO)
'01-'03 Trouble In Shangri La Era
'03-'05 Say You Will Era
'05-'08 Solo Era (Lindsey's solo albums and Stevie's solo tours)
'08-? Unleashed Era
I still can't decide if '98-'01 should be categorized as simply the 'Stevie Era.' In the end, I think no. Because the Dance was still the biggest lingering shadow, and Stevie's Enchanted Box Set and Tour were simply riding the wave of The Dance.

I just wanted to give you a high five as you're a Villa fan. I'm a big Brad Guzan fan, you're backup keeper in case he's buried that far into obscurity, so Villa's my second fav team in the Premiership. Fulham is my first.
I actually had to read this twice because it made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. I can only assume you're talking about some kind of sport.
Anyway, welcome to the Ledge!! ;)

What other music could you possibly need? There are 42 years worth of material, 16 solo careers, and countless demos and bootlegs. What other music could you possibly have time for?

That's what my friends just don't seem to understand. Under the Fleetwood Mac moniker is a HUGE body of music. Not just a ton of music, but it also vastly differs in style. Between the Mac albums and the solo ones you can hear:
Rock
Pop
Country
Punk
Folk
Blues
Jazz
Dance
I even think Illume has a hip-hop esque bass line.

Exactly. I have a genre set up on my iTunes for "Fleetwood Mac Related" which has 3185 songs in it (sure there are a few duplicates), but these songs cover all those and more. You missed out "alternative" - which is the nicest way I could describe Dave W's work with Donovan's Brain.

I do kind of like that grouping! If we could list a couple of Ledge highlights from each of those earlier eras, I think we'd be good to go! ;)
And actually, for those past eras, it'd be cool to lists 3 members or so that really DEFINED the era- such as IrishGurl!

Some of the threads/posts were downright hilarious. Marissa's post above reminded me of Paula and Curtis' Gold and Braid dance (for whatever reason). I had to go back and watch it again. Kills me.

I do miss the old days. Interestingly, the thread cited herein refers to 2007, which, to me, was the end of the "golden age" of The Ledge (2002-2007). It was that to me because that is when I knew many people here both on and off of the boards, which made for some great times in many different cities. Sure we fought like cats and dogs. But, esp. in the political threads, I think many of those discussion enlightened many people. I certainly learned a thing or do and was often proved wrong. But, I think many could take the lack of political discussion in ChitChat if posters were allowed to post freely in the FM related threads. By freely, I mean the friendly and often hilarious banter within the FM related discussions (note - I am not talking about the nonfriendly/attacking banter) - anyone remember the dress parody and song parody threads
But, that ended when the board was sold. The new owner does not like it when most do it. It is her board - she sets the rules. If you don't like it, leave. So, that is that. Moreover, many seem to like it as evidenced by the noticing of it this thread and I certainly am not in any way saying she should not set the rules on her own board even though I may not agree with her choices and often have not.
I do not post as much as I used to because I have huge issues with logging on. Sometimes I can't for long periods of time. After discussing it, the administrator told me there was nothing wrong with my ability to post. But, it keeps reoccuring. So, having to deal with that is no fun.
As to whether this place will ever go back to what is was before - all things must end. So, I chose to remember it fondly and try to operate within the confines of the new regime. Note - if anyone wants to post with the crew that was here but got banned en masse by the new ownership, they all post on another boards that a google search should easily locate. So, it is a little like having the best of both worlds - you can come here for a more sober discussion and there for fun and farce.
It is good, however, to see some old faces in here, like Homie and BigAl to name a few.
Nothing lasts forever.

Thanks Strand. I managed to stay on the (Ledge) wagon for 2&1/2 years, but finally fell back off. The friendships that were forged here, became bigger than the Ledge, and FM, for many of us. You said, that nothing lasts forever, and it's true! The wheels fell off several of those friendships. And while I was holding onto my principles, in my refusal to return, the fact is - there are several people on here, who never joined any of the other upstart boards, that I really missed having contact with. So, I'm back. And I also feel that the glory days of the board are behind it(much as FM's glory days are), but hey, at least I can maintain contact with some great Ledgies.

In some ways, these are the posts I miss the most. I was just thirteen when I first started lurking around here, fifteen when I joined, and, as ridiculous as this sounds, The Ledge was my first introduction to political debates. omg that thread brings back memories. Why was my only participation giving Strand a hard time for not liking Under The Skin though? I'm sorry Strand! I miss Tiffany (EnchantedSLN) and Sara who ran sararhiannon.com, its crazy to think that site has been gone for quite a few years now. That was such a good site and a huge loss, the best document of demo lyrics and existing bootlegs in circulation. I still find myself wishing I could go back to that site to look something up here and there.Good ol' Sara was rockin'. I think motherhood pulled her (or yanked her) out of the fan world online. By the way, Hi, Al! I miss you! I love our tales of the old circus.
Also wondering what happened to my friend joy from Kansas City! She shared so much great music with me.She would love to hear from you, Al! E-mail her. She is still around, enjoying Rush & other bands, & watching with great interest her daughter's burgeoning career in music.
I've been lurking since 97 and have posted on and off ever since. It's great to have you around more often, you ol' son of a gun, you. Also great to have dB (Dave) back here in this neck of the woods. I'm not sure, but I think he got another dog after Cash died. Dave?
Is Paula back? Bring her back, I say! And how about Amber, who used to groove & bop till she wanted to drop. She was a spitfire, full of energy. She once told me how she loves watching videos of Stevie in which she flings her body heedlessly thither & yon (referring to Cal Jam or something).
Do you guys think we'll all meet up again in Ledgie Heaven 100 years from now?
Which two Ledgies from different eras would you want to meet each other, & why? I always wanted Carrie to meet Hayley because I think they would both love each other's dry, ironic sense of humor & playful facetiousness -- & dig each other's personality.

You can go on walks, you can drink beer together, you can watch Josef von Sternberg films & discuss the cinematography, you can go to Petsmart & sniff all the chewtoys, you can eat flies together, you can sniff each other's hinies, you can go ocean or lake swimming, & you can take car trips! Anything's better than being in the cage at the shelter, listening to all those other dogs yapping at you & sniffing you just 'cause they brought you in a little after the others got there.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 2 dogs. The way my crazy life is though, right now they drive me nuts. I keep telling my kids that when they're grown and away, I'll have a really well trained dog that is mine alone. My life won't be so hectic then, and I'll have more time for him.
For me, I've got a loner gene in my DNA. Having a great dog, for me, translated to - me not really needing PEOPLE. Seriously. Most nights, when I'd get off of work, I'd have RATHER gone home to Cash, than hung out with friends. You guys on here, were really all of the friends I wanted, or needed. That's turned around now, which I guess is much healthier. I have a semi-real life now!

David, I also LOVE to travel. Traveling was a BITCH, with a dog. I couldn't in the summer, because I couldn't risk him overheating, if I left him alone in the car for more than five minutes. Boarding wasn't an option, as I'd have never "caged" him. So when I could travel with him, I'd end up staying miles and miles from where I wanted to be, finding a hotel that would allow dogs. (and yes, my friends tried keeping him, and he kept them up all night, crying for "daddy" :o )
If I outlive my two cousins(which I'm healthy as a horse, and they're smokers and heavy drinkers), I plan on leaving my entire estate, to animal causes.

Mary and I spoke several times off of the boards. She was a nice lady with some issues that according to her were caused by her lousy experiences with the men in her life. So, she mostly always took the woman's sidfe of things. I like/liked Mary even though she came across here as whacky at times. But, that is just me, I tend to like everyone.

A little Collectivism is not really a bad thing - though taking the so called social contract to the point marx did is IMO unworkable. On the other side - Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy could lead to a general uncaring for your fellow man, which IMO is equally unworkable. At some point society must exist as a quasi whole, thous the U.S. Const. and the fact that the US is a republic as opposed to a true democracy.
To the issue of Mary - yes, her political views IMO were mostly ridiculous. She actually argues with a straight face that Monica Lewinsky flew the dress with Clinton's dried semen from DC to LA with no ulterior motive and that Lewinsky got her job at Revelon based on her on credentials - Lewinsky was just an innocent victim  Once again, the woman can do no wrong - it was always the man - the latter not refering to Carrie, though she may pee standing up.

My favorites include Ava, miriamswell, Garett & Jen (they are as one), Les, Lisa, Dan Matsumoto, probably Hayley, Brian J., Bly, sodascouts (despite her silly Stevie ideas), Brian (bjk3047), mike_nh, & even Hawkeye gets me in the funny bone.
So many marvelous people -- hundreds, really.
Thanks for the shout-out David! The feeling is mutual. I even had a dream where you made a cameo once.
I stopped my regular posting in 2005, and it really wasn't caused by any one event. I just got a little burned out. A lot of things changed for me that year.
I still drop by occasionally, but it has changed so much that it's almost unrecognizable. Still, I'm not around enough to evaluate the current trends so who knows, maybe it's changed for the better! ;)
The thing that was great about the Ledge for me was the passion we displayed on a regular basis about so many topics. I would get into debates about politics, about lyric meanings, about whether or not Sara should be continually rendered immune in the Tusk Survivor game I was running with rezamatic... we really threw ourselves into everything, large and small. I've never found a message board that rivals the way so many of us did that! I guess that appeals more to people who are rather free about sharing their opinions though, lol.
You didn't have to be opinionated to be cool, though. I meant so many great people through this site. I loved being able to go to concerts and say "I'm Nancy from BuckinghamNicks.net, aka sodascouts on the Ledge" and folks would recognize me immediately! I can't even name all the people I met at concerts.... but I know I got into trouble with several of them. The Atlanta, Phoenix, Chicago, and Detroit crowds especially. ;)
Some I still keep in touch with. Wldhrt35 and I are going shopping in Chicago this weekend. I'm spending new year's eve with gypsyrhiannon (Kristin, not Pip, although Pip is great too). Sorceress invited me to her home in England, but sadly I cannot afford to go! On Facebook, GardenStateGirl, darklinensuit, Merf, and Sara V (I think she went by beautyinrelease here but I can't even remember that for sure) all wished me a happy birthday. I still love all those folks, and sometimes, like with Sara V., I can't even remember their Ledge names anymore. Some others I keep in touch with are Lisa G. (lalittlecricket), Joe (downonrodeo), Farrah, Renae, Jill... I'm gonna stop with that but there are more. I love social networking for that, because there are so many other Ledgies that I've lost track of without it. Faceofglass, JohnnyStew, strandinthewind, dardragon, FeverDance, Sharon (what was her Ledgie name again?) I'm not going to go on here because it depresses me, so my apologies to those I've left out.
But change is the way of message boards, the way of people, the way of life. Posters who are in it for the long-haul are a very rare breed, and a great asset to the board they stick with.

much of the deep well of knowledge on the Ledge has since moved on. There were a lot of crazy knowledgeable people here at one time, and now much of that has been lost.
Yes it has. And that sucks. That's the main reason I don't bother coming here much anymore (besides the fact that I just don't have the time.) Nothing else left to learn, or nothing more that I care to learn. Plus nothing new & exciting going on creatively with the band. I've waxed nostalgic here plenty, I'm done now.
Got there, bought the postcard & mailed it.
Well, ya gotta remember, The Ledge was around before the 2000 date it shows that I signed up...that was just when Marty reopened revamped Ledge after he'd closed it for a while. The original Ledge was started in 95 or 96 or so...I've been around these here parts for somewhere close to 13 years.
Wow, you're even older than I thought.
Ethan, I remember when you were posting only at 7 Wonders and I remember thinking, "wow, he would be eaten alive at The Ledge." Somehow, you survived.
He was coddled & protected for some unknown reason.
If things had been allowed to take their natural course, he would have been. However, there were some people who just kept coming to his rescue, over and over and over. Which, in turn, chased away many of the more interesting contributors to this Board. They just got fed up with being punished for calling him to the carpet.
JMO.
Yeah, that's what I meant.
Was that Chris? I seem to remember his posting a lot about Stevie's weight, hair, bangs, boots, etc.
Anyway, I miss: Amber, Hillary, Dissention, Sparky, Tower, Ryan, the other Ryan, Paula, Justin, Jim, Jyqm, Deanna, Kate, Lux, Greg, and Brian.
Thanks! And yes, Chris was obsessed about Stevie's bangs. To bang or not to bang. I think I finally freaked out on him about it. Or maybe I just mentioned that I noticed he seemed a bit obsessed & he freaked out on me, can't recall which.
Don't let the screen door hit you where the good Lord split you on your way out.
That's what most of those people did. Yet they are apparently missed.
As I read your post I also remembered Tracy who ran the
Burnish website. That was another great fan site. The site has been gone for about 4 years
and Tracy seems to have vanished from the whole Mac fandom.
Burnish was a great site.
i think david might literally (literally) be my grandfather.
Or at the very least an uncle once removed.
Oh Mary. Crazy Mary. Good times.
Ahh, the glory days. It was like the movie "Mean Girls"... but it was on a message board
.
I know, I'm glad they're gone too.
Your wish is my command, godfather. :wavey:
Amber has been MIA for a while now. No idea what she's up to.
I remember Hayley, she was cool.
Anyone with a name like "CrystalWitchyPoo" or "SaraFlufftard" or "AngelMyGoldenHairPasta" or "GypsyRhiannonPeckerDoodle" would be banned immediately -- I can't stomach that anymore.
As it should be. SaraFlufftard is my fave, btw.
I just had a flash back of the "Dirty Sanchez" thread. I don't recall the exact thread title but I remember seeing how the thread title was worded. I knew it was going to be hilarious, raunchy and a thread legend. My instincts turned out to be true.
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard and I learned, no… I was taught many new things.
Wasn't that the "Perv" thread? Or maybe there was another one, I've been gone a while.

You know, I was thinking that in the past couple of months or so, there seems to be a new, fresh kind of air here. Also, there seems to have been some fairly deep conversation emerging in that time which is cool.
The Ledge is kind of like Fleetwood Mac it seems. The people that have been here awhile like the way it originally was, and of course things change over time. But often times, we like the original the best, and change is kind of frowned upon. Know what I mean?

I just love Fleetwood Mac people. Like Jazmen said, they're from everywhere, and their personal lives, opinions, etc are all over the map. But there's a common respect among everybody. You just don't see that in other online communities. I've been a member of online communities for my DeLorean car longer than I've been on Fleetwood Mac boards. A good amount of those people are just downright hateful, nasty, thorn up their ass folks. Very intolerant of anybody who's not white, well to do, and Republican. Fleetwood Mac fans seem to revel in their diversity, and enjoy learning about one another's differences. While I've never met anyone here in person, I hope that'll change one day. :D

Bummer about the book club having never taken off (if we want to avoid what Fowler called the fused participle, we need to say "bummer about the book club's having never taken off").
If we started a new book club, could we read & talk about books from all times?

but it's not a participle, is it? it's a gerund acting as the object of preposition.

I have missed you, Jason. Glad to see you back. I thought of you recently when I saw the trailer for The Lovely Bones. Remember when we tried to start a Ledgie book club? Didn't you totally dislike that book? I adored it and I'm so excited about this movie. :xoxo:
i remember buying the book to read w/ you guys, & i am excited to see the movie too~

We would all have to agree on a book and then all read it at the same time. I would let you choose for a month, but I am afraid I would need MORE than a month to complete whatever you chose. And then I'd be afraid I wasn't smart enough to discuss it properly. Oh let's just forget the whole thing!

but it's not a participle, is it? it's a gerund acting as the object of preposition.A participle can be used as a noun, which, as you have noted, is then called a gerund. Gerunds & participles aren't mutually exclusive forms: one is a functional subset of the other.
I side with Bryan Garner on the question of fused participles: The possessive ought to be used when the result is not unidiomatic or unnatural, but Fowler overstated his case by allowing no exceptions.
Garner cites the following as a defensible exception:
The chance of that ever happening is slight.
If it were your birthday, Carrie, I'd buy you a paperback copy of Garner's "Dictionary of American Usage & Style," & we could start a bunch of really cool threads about it in Chit Chat.

If I could pick the first two books, I'd pick:
Mark Twain, "Pudd'nhead Wilson"
Henry Adams, "Democracy"
Both comic novels & both very short. Both authors supreme verbal technicians & first-rate artists in the American pantheon.

fowler has a habit of overstating.
you learn something new every day. i did not know that gerunds are a subset of participles.

you learn something new every day. i did not know that gerunds are a subset of participles. For those who are still perplexed by the gerund/participle binary:
It is/isn't a binary. Its vagueness in signs/not in signs introduces diminution/augmentation. Not IN signs, but in NOT signs. A monologue can be only a denunciation of dialogue. Its opposition IS its supposition is NOT its depository
IS its suppository.

i think that cleared it up for everyone who didn't get it the first time around.

why do i have a feeling we're not talking about a book? and yes.

I remember. Yeah, that didn't work. :D I guess people read at different paces & we just couldn't get all our **** together at the same time. I wouldn't mind trying again, but I'm really crazy busy right now & I fear it would take me several months to finish a book - although I am in the process of reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle & I'm almost done with it. Only took me 4 months.
I loved The Lovely Bones, and I will probably see the movie. Another book I've read since that I fell in love with was The Time Traveler's Wife. That movie was actually very good, true to the story for the most part.

I liked The Lovely Bones, but I didn't love it. I think I liked the concept more than anything.
The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my favorites. I didn't see the movie, in fear that they'd butcher it.

I can't get through The Lovely Bones. It freaks me out way too much. I get a chapter in and then flip out. I'll manage it eventually, though, and I do want to see the movie.

Its just reaaaaaaaaaaaaally intense subject material and certain aspects of it hit a little close to home for me. Thus the flip out. :)

I've read it. It's amazing. Once you get through the first few chapters or so - which are horrifying, and I did cry ridiculous amounts - the story becomes almost touching but still keeps that underlying hope and anticipation that George Harvey will be found out and arrested. It's also interesting to see how everyone's lives pan out after Susie's death.
Really good book, I'd definitely recommend it.

Damn, I wish you guys were around when we originally did the book club! I think it ended up being just me and Betsy talking about the book, everyone else got fed up I remember.
I wish I was too! I love reading, I just don't do it enough. Which is terrible, considering I study English Literature. Oh, the irony.

How about Wuthering Heights for the first book club reading? One, it's one of my favourite books (selfish of me to choose it here, I know) and two...I've just seen that episode of Friends where Pheobe has to read it..haha!
I love The Brontes, Elizabeth Gaskell, Dumas...etc..

Well, I hope this won't come out the wrong way, but when I first signed up to The Ledge - in the summer of 2005 - I ended up feeling pretty quickly that this place was nasty - that there were a lot of mean people who lived for no other purpose than to make snide comments, etc. - a lot of trolls. And that things were very "clique-like." I went on over to Seven Wonders at that point - and by the way - - - don't 100% believe it when people tell you that the only reason Seven Wonders was created was "because The Ledge was down" - - - I wasn't the only one who felt this way - not by a long shot. But I understood that the board was just going through "a phase" and that the trolls would lose interest after awhile; and in my opinion that's what's happened - and I really do feel that in general things have gotten MUCH nicer here in the past few years! :D

7W can be just as vicious. I notice a lot of old time members here on The Ledge like to take their frustrations out on newbies.
