His first important sale was a drawing of Keith Magnuson of the Chicago Blackhawks for someone who wanted to give it to Magnuson as a gift, Sorenson said. Not long after, another patron commissioned a drawing of Stevie Nicks, of the musical group Fleetwood Mac.

The Answer to Pop's Prim-Princess Problem? Lykke Li

Searching for a little more soul and a little less predictability in a world of hypermanaged pop stars? Swedish indie-soul singer Lykke Li is here to answer your prayers.

In September 1981, Stevie Nicks appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone. She’d just released her legendary first solo album, Bella Donna, and was busy working on Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage on the outskirts of Paris in a decaying 30-room château that David Bowie, who’d also recorded there, believed to be haunted. In the interview, Nicks talked about her affection for the Hindu goddess Devi, her desire to build her own pyramid, and her certainty that she’d been a monk in a past life. The story reads like a portal into a lost world, one in which decadence and eccentricity were prerequisites to rock stardom. On the cover, shot by Annie Leibovitz, Nicks’ delicate finger serves as a perch for a giant white bird (in homage to the Bella Donna album art). It’s a paean to the kind of rock ’n’ roll woman you just don’t see anymore—the enchantress, the mystic, the gothic siren.

Blame it on the fact that today’s twentysomethings were raised in the heyday of irony. Blame it on the collapse of a music industry no longer able to rent French estates in the name of sonic soul-searching. Blame it on a modern definition of New Age as meditation and green juice rather than séances and cocaine. Today’s rock stars, so crushingly aware of the bottom line, are more managed, less debauched, and generally saner than they’ve ever been. Where are the Grace Slicks, the Kate Bushes, the Tori Amoses; who among today’s stars has Nicks’ “timeless face of a rock and roll woman/ while her heart breaks”?

In 2008, an answer emerged in the form of a beguiling Swede named Lykke Li (pronounced “Licky Lee”). The cover of her debut, the Little Bit EP—with the singer gazing into the distance, wearing a headdress of white orchids—conjured a sense of intimate mystery that the music only amplified. Li sang in a girl’s voice about having a woman’s broken heart. The detached youthfulness of her tone against her warm electro-soul sound, plus the abject loneliness in her lyrics, made for an irresistible modern take on girl-group melancholy. Critics embraced her as a founder of a new “indie soul” movement—one that has since become a defining subgenre of the day, from the orchestral nihilism of Lana Del Rey to the dazed funkiness of Solange Knowles. With her long, dirty-blond layers, crisp tailored slacks, and enveloping coats—always in black, always with kohl-rimmed eyes—Li may not have been a direct Nicks descendant, but she certainly embodied Scandinavian alterna-cool.

[I love Scully more than I love most people, but I don't think I want a candle. This is from an article on Etsy artist Amanda Stilwell]

Huffington Post, April 25, 2014 by Joseph Erbentraut

Some six months ago, she began selling altar candles adorned by many of the same new wave icons featured in the Tarot deck, as well as other icons who inspired her -- most recently, Stevie Nicks, Beyonce and Agent Scully from "The X-Files." They are sold for $13 apiece on her shop, a price point accessible to more customers than the $42 Tarot deck.

Almost 16 years ago, our newspaper created a new section to give readers the best in local entertainment news. We called it Weekender. Stevie Nicks was on our first cover. (She was past her prime then; who knew she'd still be performing today?)

[Review of Fat Goth record, 100%. I should find the lyrics for that SN song]

http://www.theskinny.co.uk/music/records/307712-fat_goth_one_hundred_percent_suave

Album review by Chris McCall. Published 29 April 2014

Fat Goth don't have immediate crossover appeal; their music is too heavy and takes too many sharp changes in direction that can leave the casual listener struggling to keep up. Then there's the song titles, such as Caligynephobia (a fear of beautiful women, in case you were wondering) or The Stevie Nicks Method. But that's not stopped them being endorsed by celebrity chefs and playing unlikely Christmas gigs in Glasgow's George Square.

[interesting way to describe a drink]

http://www.racingandsports.com.au/international/rsNewsArt.asp?NID=302007&story=Kentucky_Derby_Survival_Guide

Mint juleps are the official drink of the Kentucky Derby and there is a good reason why they aren't consumed at any other event. The history of mint juleps stems from a recipe which was originally concocted as a dare and stuck.

It's a strong drink that tastes the way you might imagine kissing a halitosis-conscious Stevie Nicks would be like. Occasionally you'll see someone attempt to elevate their standing by drinking out of a chalice.

[Stevie named #71 as singer with greatest vocal range]

Anti Music, May 27, 2014

http://www.antimusic.com/news/14/May/ts21Guns_N_Roses_Axl_Rose_Has_Worlds_Greatest_Vocal_Range.shtml

On Wednesday Guns N' Roses' Axl Rose Has World's Greatest Vocal Range was a top story. Here is the recap: A new study finds that Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose has the greatest vocal range among a host of popular singers including acclaimed pop stars Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce.
On the other end of the spectrum, some of today's most popular pop and country stars landed at the bottom of the vocal range chart, including Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift among the bottom five with Luke Bryan coming in dead last.

Concert Hotels published the results of the study in an interactive chart labeled "The Vocal Ranges of The World's Greatest Singers" with Rose capturing the top spot followed by Carey at no. 2 and Prince at no. 3.

The study measured the highest and lowest notes that the singers achieved in the recording studio and the interactive chart shows the songs where they hit specific notes. Axl Rose came out with the highest range, covering over five octaves. The highest was on the track "Ain't It Fun" from 'The Spaghetti Incident" and the lowest was on "There Was A Time" from 'Chinese Democracy'.

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler came in 4th place, followed by James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Most of today's biggest pop stars didn't come close to the top of the chart with Beyonce coming in at No. 22, Miley Cyrus at no. 31, Justin Timberlake at no. 32, Rihanna at no. 43, Lady Gaga at no. 48, Lana Del Rey at no. 49, Lorde at no. 52, Bruno Mars at no. 56, Katy Perry at no. 68, Justin Bieber at no. 73, Taylor Swift at no. 76 and Luke Bryan concluding the list at no. 77.

Among rock singers Elvis was no. 12, John Lennon landed at no. 13, The Who's Roger Daltrey came in at no. 17, Bruce Springsteen was no. 19, Bono was no. 21, Jim Morrison was no. 23, Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant was no. 24, Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger was no. 25, Bob Dylan was no. 33, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was no. 34, Bad Company's Paul Rodgers was no. 35, Lou Reed was no. 40, John Fogerty was no. 55, Chuck Berry was no. 64, Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks was no. 71 followed by Jerry Lee Lewis at no. 72.

“I met Stevie Nicks when I was over in America and she was like ‘I just love Australians they just know how to live life. It’s not about making oodles of money. It’s about making money and then going and experiencing life.’ And I thought, ‘wow, you’re Stevie Nicks’.”

Asked how she came to meet the Fleetwood Mac legend, she said coyly: “She came to my house. I’ll leave it at that, but she’s very lovely.”

Fleetwood Mac posed the same problem. It's impossible to choose. One could also argue it's a British band, but for me it has always been about Stevie Nicks: American music royalty. I'm going with Tusk, as it's one of Fleetwood Mac's biggest and boldest works. It also has some of my most loved Nicks tunes, Sara and Storms. You should know, however, this could all change by next week.

9. “Stand Back,” Stevie Nicks
Kids, this will be impossible for you to believe, but I swear it’s true: Nobody involved with this video was any less than 100 percent sincere about it. If someone were to try something like this now, it would be delivered with a wink, as if to say: “If you like this, then we are serious. If not, well then we’re all in on the joke together.” I miss the sincerity, personally. What I am saying is: Keep your hands off this video, Iggy Azalea. (No shade. No, no, no shade.)

It seems like Stevie now wears that same off-the- shoulder black dress all the the time, no matter where she is: in the studio, at weddings, TV appearances, photo. shoots, etc. She finds a look, and then wears it into the ground! Strange girl she is.
Her closets are likely overflowing so many other clothes.

How ironic that she is often referenced /known for her fashion style. In her early years she wore various outfits with a range of colors. Now it's just black, black and black; so monotone, with that one dress! It's perplexing, because she looks so vibrant when she's wearing, or at least adding other colors.

Yeah, it looks good on her and all, but the frequency with which she wears it -- plus the types of events she's been wearing it to -- is starting to get bizarre. A wedding??

Maybe Lindsey has forbidden her from wearing anything else. ;)

I am that kind of fan who will always be happy with whatever she does, so all I can think of when I look at recent pictures is how beautiful she looks.
I'm "only" 34 but I wanna say I understand her. I used to love some diversity and would wear almost anything, but ever since I put on a little weight and became lazier and lazier, I seem to want to wear the same uniform every day, too.

Barbra Streisand is worse than Stevie, she's been wearing the same clothes for years now, coincidentally, Barbra's tops have the same sleeves as Stevie's.

I love Stevie too and the glasses don't bother me. I'm 52 and can't really wear contacts comfortably anymore because I wear tri-focals. It's easier with the glasses, but I don't know why she wears the uniform for everything. The same thing with the Oscar party. All the beautiful gowns she could wear. She has a great figure for any age and would look wonderful in different colors and styles. What ever makes her happiest I guess, but I remember the 70's and 80's with all those beautiful dresses and colors.

I just don't relate to the mindset of caring what Stevie wears in her private life. I'd like her to mix things up a bit on stage, but I suppose being considered a legacy/nostalgia artist might make her feel like that isn't really an option. As to what she wears to private parties and when she's hanging out with her friends... Yeah, a lot of it's the same. Don't we all have our standard go-to outfits in the closet? No big thang. We weren't invited to that wedding anyway.

I largely share your view on this and have often argued that Stevie should be allowed to wear whatever she wants -- from the aviator glasses down to the platform Reeboks. It's just starting to seem a little odd to me that she's been wearing the exact same outfit, in the exact same color, to everything.

It's absolutely her prerogative, though. No question about it.

I can totally relate. If I dress up to go to an event and find that I look great in it, I will find every excuse possible to wear it again and again. For about 3 months, you could find me wearing the same red jacket to every public function I attended because I got so many compliments on it. My partner has to be the one to say, 'People JUST saw you in that outfit. Wear something else.'

Now, excuse me, I have to wear my seersucker suit to clean out the refrigerator.

I think that as she got older she just got lazy.I mean, she has already arrived as an icon and has nothing to prove or any trends to set.And also she said in an interview about the filming of IYD movie that she didn't really want to film it because it was so much of a commitment to do her hair and get ready for each day so to alleviate some of the pain-in-the-assness she picked a uniform and bought about 30 of the same outfit-no thought process required!I personally know that wearing a uniform is SO much easier than picking out a new outfit every day and it's hard to go back to doing it. I guess she got used to that during the IYD filming and learned to like it REAL fast.I think the "dress to impress" days are over for our girl. What else can you do with 30 of the same outfit?:laugh:Great for her but BOORRINGGG for us.But the glasses-no excuse-maybe she thinks they make her look cool-who knows?:shrug:

The August 15 issue of Entertainment Weekly has a guide on how to prepare for the Emmy's.....a 24-hour binge of all TV episodes you need to see before the awards ceremony. From 12:12 to 1:12 a.m. they recommend the "Seven Wonders" season finale of American Horror Story. Then from 1:12 to 1:16 a.m. you are instructed to "Dance to Stevie Nicks for four minutes. This is mandatory."

Besides the "Love Actually"-esque journey to romance, viewers can expect, lots of pop culture references (the pilot pays homage to "Back to the Future" and Queen revealed there is a "Laverne and Shirley" connection in an upcoming episode), many funny and touching moments and possibly some big names as guest stars. Milioti even revealed her dream TV mom would be Fleetwood Mac frontwoman, Stevie Nicks, and she has a bit of an obsession with Jeff Goldblum.

Tavi Gevinson and Stevie Nicks Are Friends, Pen Pals

http://www.styleite.com/news/tavi-gevinson-is-friends-and-pen-pals-with-stevie-knicks/

That sound you hear is Taylor Swift crying into her Keds, because Tavi Gevinson just flawlessly dominated the celebrity BFF game. In an interview with i-D magazine the just-turned-18-year-old revealed that she be moving in with fellow young person Petra Collins when she moves to New York for college, however when it comes to backstage hangs and dinner dates she prefers to jive with a more worldly-wise crowd: i.e. Stevie Nicks:
“

It’s always about Stevie Nicks. Maybe the pool has expanded. Maybe I go to her when I’m trying to balance the emotional with the strong, then I’ll go to Joni when I’m doing emotional only, or I’ll go to Beyoncé when I’m doing just strong – although with that new album there’s so much going on! Stevie is my security blanket. Oh, and Stevie saw my TED talk and I got to go to a couple of Fleetwood Mac shows. I have now been lucky enough to meet her a few times. She’s the best argument for meeting your idols. I saw her twice backstage and then we had dinner. She’s not on email or anything, but I’ll get a random handwritten letter from her once in a while. It’s unreal.

I can’t even get my mom to text me back let alone getting Stevie Nicks to write me a letter by hand. I also appreciate Tavi’s modesty in referring to their dinner date as a “meeting,” but girl, you can share as many stores of party puking and pocket money dramas as you want — you are not a normal teenager

Where Was Hillary Clinton in Her 20s? Where 9 Famous Women Were at Age 23

I’ve never been terribly fond of my birthday. There is something about the reality of growing up, the actual change in time, that scares me a little. It’s not being a grown-up I’m afraid of; it’s the act of growing up — all the twists and turns, ups and downs — I fear.

Maybe I’ve been referred to as a member of ”the new Lost Generation” so many times that I actually believe I’m lost. After all, before I even entered my 20s, the New York Times Magazine was reporting that I would spend my 20s pushing back adult rites of passage like leaving home and becoming financially independent.

When I was 13, I thought I would be married by 25. I certainly don’t see that happening now (nor do I want it to). Instead, in the days leading up to my 23rd birthday, I found myself coming back to Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” again and again, playing it on repeat too many times to count. What is it about this song that speaks to me on such a deep level, especially now? Forget listening to it at work; I cry almost every time.

Time makes you bolder
Children get older
I’m getting older, too.

Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Oh, I don’t know.

Stevie Nicks was just 26 when she wrote about those snow covered hills in Colorado.

In the grand scheme of things, I hope I have many years ahead of me, and know I’m just starting out. But there is that fear that I will not accomplish everything I want to do; that I don’t even know what exactly I want to do with the rest of my life because the possibilities are endless — or that I haven’t done enough already.

So for my 23rd birthday, I decided to take a look at where are nine women I look up to were at when they were 23. Yes, many were already impressive, but they also clearly had plenty to learn, just like me.

At 23, Stevie Nicks was a starving artist in Los Angeles living with her then-boyfriend and musical partner Lindsey Buckingham. She was working as a waitress and cleaning lady to support the two of them.

Buckingham Nicks had opened for some big names like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix early in their career together, but soon, they had no money, no record label, and no fame to their names. As Nicks remembers:

Lindsey and I had a taste of the big time, we recorded in a big studio, we met famous people, we made what we consider to be a brilliant record and nobody liked it. But I had gotten to a point where it was like, ‘I’m not happy. I am tired. But I don’t know if we can do any better than this. If nobody likes this, then what are we going to do?’ I made a decision to continue. “Landslide” was the decision.

Bumbling through life with a head full of mondegreens

Pop superstar Stevie Nicks probably would consider me a poor listener. MLive file photo.

JACKSON, MI – Shame is easier to bear now that my social impairment has a name and a scientific basis.

The disease is called mondegreenism, and my case is severe. It's a chronic failure to correctly hear and comprehend song lyrics.

Laugh if you must.

Song-related disorders sound trivial to normal people, but a certain stigma is felt by those who battle this affliction.

My latest embarrassment came two weeks ago, when I sang along with the car radio to a classic hit song by Stevie Nicks.

"Just like the word we know," I sang. "Sings a song something-something singing."

My wife, who has witnessed many such episodes during her difficult years at my side, turned in disbelief.

"Even you cannot possibly listen to that song and hear 'just like the word we know,'" she said. "It's 'just like the white winged dove.' WHI-tte Wing-ED Dove."

The shock was profound.

"Are you telling me she's singing about birds?" I yelped. "Who cares about birds?"

Patiently my spouse explained that doves are not the point of the song, but I was lost. Incapacitated by mondegreenism, I had no clue what Stevie Nicks was saying even after hearing it for three decades.

Dozens more examples could be cited, because this began in childhood. I have only a dim idea of what some of my favorite songs are about. Time and again, the lyrics I hear prove to be absurdly wrong.

People assume I am a poor listener, and maybe they are right. But now I have an excuse.

"Did you know there is a word for messed-up song lyrics like the ones you hear?" my wife asked one recent day. "They're called mondegreens."

Running to the dictionary, I found this definition: "a word or phrase that results from a mishearing of something said or sung." The first known use of the word was in 1954.

Further research revealed certain people feel prone to mondegreenism, and scientists actually study how songs are processed between human ears.

One study found music is handled in part of the brain called the superior temporal sulcus, or STS, according to a 2010 article in NewScientist magazine.

"In the middle of the STS, the lyrics and tune were being processed as a single signal. But in the anterior STS, only the lyrics seemed to be processed," the article said.

Next time you hear someone sing ridiculously incorrect lines to a song, remember that we have brain damage. Our anterior superior temporal sulci don't work right.

Bumbling through life with a head full of mondegreens is no picnic, but the stigma feels better with an excuse. It's not me, Stevie, it's my sulcus.

25 Quotes on Wealth From Powerful Women

By Koa Beck, DailyWorth’s Senior Editor, September 27, 2014 Yahoo

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/25-quotes-wealth-powerful-women-040000961.html

"When you're rich and famous you're the dominant force in a relationship, even if you try hard not to be. I've talked of sacrificing everything for Fleetwood Mac, but I realize now that it is simply the only thing I've ever wanted to do."

Stevie Nicks is the lead singer and a songwriter of Fleetwood Mac. In conjunction with her solo work, she has sold over 140 million albums and reportedly produced over 40 “Top 50” hits. With Fleetwood Mac, she garnered five Grammy Award nominations along with an additional eight for her solo projects. In 1998, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Top Ten Solo Albums

Bella Donna (1981) #8

Okay, sure. Looking at that teased 1980s hair and trying-too-hard outfit, it’s easy to dismiss Stevie Nicks as a relic of a time long since past. And for some, that may well be the case. In 1981 however Stevie Nicks was the premiere woman of rock n’ roll. Fleetwood Mac was ruling the charts with their landmark album Rumours only five years old and while 1979′s Tusk was a relative disappointment considering Rumours‘ commercial juggernaut status, it was a critical success. However, tension within the band was at an all-time high and Nicks’ extensive backlog of unrecorded songs gave her ripe fields for a solo career. Nicks forged ahead despite misgivings from her bandmates and released her solo debut, Bella Donna, to critical and commercial acclaim. While Nicks was obviously prominent within Fleetwood Mac, Bella Donna was her true coming out party into solo superstar status. With collaborations like “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” with Tom Petty and “Leather and Lace” with Don Henley, the album gave Nicks the opportunity to share songs with people outside the Fleetwood Mac name with great success. Meanwhile she shined on the rest of the songs, particularly the rock-tinged “Edge of Seventeen.” Nicks would release several other highly successful albums that are often excellent but she never quite reached the sheer musical bliss of Bella Donna.

The Harman Kardon audio is as good as I have ever heard in any vehicle. I’ve heard Stevie Nicks sing Silver Spring live. It sounded better in the Jeep. 19 Speakers provide a wide dynamic range, and a “soopa-bass” subwoofer you feel in your chest make this stereo something you will want to play for all your friends.

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress is one of my favorites; such a cool song. I'd love to hear Stevie sing the song. It's sung from a male perspective, but with some slight adjustments, she could make it her own. She's done it before.

I have no interest in the Black Eyed Peas. For a few seconds I thought she was referring to the Mamas & Papas song "I've Got a Feeling." "I've got a feeling that you're stealing all the love I've been giving to you."

This is how you know you're a total Stevie nerd. My friend was on a date the other night (with another Stevie fanatic who I was thrilled to eventually meet) and ended up sitting in front of this huge photo of Fleetwood Mac at the Burbank Bar and Grill. Now that I think of it, it might have been concert footage on a big screen tv, I don't remember. But he texted me a photo of him standing next to Stevie's image and tried to pass it off like he was at a Fleetwood Mac concert in the front row. I immediately texted him back with "Um... plain, tasteful black blouse with white pearl buttons, hair parted to the side with no bangs, conservative make up... that's totally from the Say You Will tour. You can't fool me!"

In your song "100 Years," you go over so many ages - but you left out 16 and 17 and I think Stevie Nicks is pissed. I base this off her "Edge of Seventeen" song. Do you think I'm right?

Yes. That said, her forgiving demeanor is the prime factor in Fleetwood Mac surviving decades without any internal band conflict.

Saw this on Stevie's fb today.

"Just because a relationship ended badly, and ****ty things happened, you cannot tell that to the world. But you can write a song about it, in three verses and a bridge and a chorus, that tells the really magical moments."

[About the construction of a NYT crossword puzzle that had Stevie Nicks as the answer. Hey, Lindsey does crossword puzzles. I wonder if he knew the answer]

Don’t Quit Your Day Job By Deb Amlen November 15, 2014 6:00 NYT Blog

http://wordplay.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/11/15/dont-quit-your-day-job/?_r=0

Today’s puzzle takes a list of celebrities or people of note and clues their names in punny ways. If that was it for the theme, it would be a fun yet simple exercise in figuring out the pun and solving one’s way to the finish line. But because Mr. Ries wants you to have more fun than that, he has taken the last names of these people and clued them as if those last names were indicative of jobs at which they would be really bad.

***

For the STEVIE NICKS clue, I gave the option of using mohel or barber. I preferred mohel for the humor (which is why I put it at the end, a page out of the Merl Reagle textbook). Honestly, I thought that the safer barber choice would be used, so I’m pleasantly surprised that mohel “made the cut” (pun intended).

What kind of music were you guys listening to while you were writing and recording the album?

Oh, obviously a lot of Diana Ross, Donna Summer, early Madonna, Fleetwood Mac — I became obsessed with Stevie Nicks, kept trying to channel Stevie Nicks in studio, early Prince. Mainly funk and disco with a little bit of Fleetwood Mac. Disco Mac.

"I have always been really into Stevie Nicks," Consentino said. "She's always been my biggest role model and style icon. My mom was also really into her when I was younger, so she reminds me of my mom. Someone who is more modern that I admired is Hayley Williams [of Paramore]. She's a friend of mine, and she's such a cool girl. I'm actually going to see them tonight. She's really young and doing all these amazing things. She has this awesome style and is one of the sweetest girls I've ever met."

[From an article on Paramore]

WUNC, North Carolina Public Radio by Ann Powers

http://wunc.org/post/paramore-feat-joy-williams-hate-see-your-heart-break

The pair's camaraderie lends warmth to both the performance and the video, made during the pair's session at the Village Recorder in Santa Monica. They were, Joy noted, "in the room that Stevie Nicks personally decorated for Fleetwood Mac's recording of their double album Tusk. I felt like some of the mystic spirit of Stevie is still in the walls there. That's a good energy to have in a room, especially with two women recording like we were. It felt like the perfect place to let down, light candles, take off our shoes and just be. We'd take breaks, make hot tea in the studio kitchen, and get lost in conversation before we realized we should probably get back to work." The vibe was so cozy that Joy gave Hayley her Steve Madden shoes to wear, so the younger artist would match her pal's height for the cameras. "I actually felt tall that day, and that never happens!" the diminutive singer added.

http://nypost.com/2014/12/06/the-super-fans-who-pay-thousands-to-get-c-listers-to-perform/

NY Post The fans who pay thousands to get C-listers to perform

By Reed Tucker 12/6/2014

Pretzels and a few slabs of cheese just aren’t going to cut it when you have friends over this holiday season. Want guests talking about your get-together? How about adding this to the invitation: “Oh, and the Dukes of Hazzard will be there.”

“Dukes” stars Tom Wopat and John Schneider went on Kickstarter over the summer to fund their just-released holiday album, “Home for Christmas,” and rewards included in-home performances by the duo themselves.

Two $10,000 shows featuring both Schneider and Wopat were quickly snapped up by corporations. But for a very reasonable $3,000, Wopat offered to show up alone at a fan’s house, guitar in hand, and play a set, and he’s had some enthusiastic takers.

“In a way, it’s sort of expensive, but I don’t have the time to do much else. I don’t have any hobbies,” says Roy Reaves, a Virginia man who purchased one of the Wopat concerts. “I couldn’t see this chance coming along again.”

In November, Reaves invited a handful of friends and hosted Wopat in the spacious garage at his logging company. Reaves owns a replica “General Lee” Dodge Charger that was parked nearby.

“It was a blast,” Reaves says. “[Wopat] didn’t take himself too seriously.”

Minnesota’s Scott Marthaler also owns a replica General Lee, and he’ll host Wopat next summer for a barbecue in the backyard of his farm.

“I knew it was a decent amount of money, but it’s something you’ll talk about for a long time,” says Marthaler, who works at a grocery store. “You get to spend a lot more quality time [with Wopat]. You can get to know him.”

The cost of private shows varies wildly. A Texas banker paid a whopping $7 million to have the Rolling Stones play at his birthday, though there are plenty of more affordable alternatives.

“On the low side, old-school hip-hop is great,” says Steve Einzig, president of Booking Entertainment, a Manhattan company that specializes in arranging private shows. “Rob Bass, Tone-Loc, Coolio or something like that might be around $15,000.”

Bands are often more expensive than rappers because of the cost to truck in equipment, which can run as much as $150,000. Add that to travel costs — bigger acts often demand to fly privately, which runs about $75,000 — and the price quickly skyrockets.

It’s not only the crazed fans who love the benefits of a private show.

“It’s wonderfully intimate and nice to actually meet people up close and personal,” says Mike Love of the Beach Boys. The group is auctioning an in-home concert, valued at $100,000, on charitybuzz.com.

Other performers love these shows for another reason.

“Money,” Einzig says succinctly.

In fact, artists often charge a premium for non-tour gigs.

“It’s a much harder performance when they’re performing privately,” Einzig explains. “When Stevie Nicks plays at a Stevie Nicks concert, she has a bunch of ravenous fans who paid good money to see that concert. After every song, they’re so happy to be there.”

At a private event, however, the audience is not necessarily as invested. An artist may have to perform over group chatter or the clinking of waiters clearing dinner plates. Is that any way to treat a rock legend?

Almost all shows go down at rented venues, such as country clubs and party spaces, not private homes. Can you imagine Guns N’ Roses, who earned a reported $1 million to play for a Moscow man, setting up their gear in a New York apartment?

Most buyers are — surprise! *— folks with lots of disposable income. Einzig once had a lottery winner request a private gig with crooner Gene Pitney.

One big plus of a private show is that the host gets to provide guidance on the set list. In other words, you get to tell the Rolling Stones they better not dare play material post-“Goats Head Soup.”

Another advantage is not having to plan your life around reunion tours.

John Tavlarios, a Connecticut resident in the shipping business, booked Earth, Wind & Fire for his 50th birthday party a couple years back, and Kool & the Gang for his wife’s 50th.

“I had this thing where I wanted to see a lot of those late ’60s and ’70s bands before they couldn’t perform anymore,” he says.

He also once hosted “Get Down Tonight” act KC and the Sunshine Band. He says it’s been money well spent.

“It’s a special experience,” Tavlarios says. “I never had one of those events where people didn’t walk away talking about it forever.”

2014 will forever be known as the year that we realized One Direction was actually, dare we say, good. Teenagers and middle-age music critics blast "Fireproof" on the subway without shame. Stevie Nicks told us “Steal My Girl” was one of her favorite new tracks and we can't disagree. "Four" has exactly what you want from a boy band -- nay! -- any band. Catchy choruses, dancy guitars and man buns (so many the man buns) make "Four" a complex, feel-good trip down young love lane.-- JG

Jenny Slate (I admit I didn't know who she was) does her version of Marcel the Shell singing Landslide:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jmAOoIW7YM#t=127

From TheNerdist :

Jenny Slate is a funny, funny person. We all knew this, from her one year on Saturday Night Live to her characters on Kroll Show to playing Mona Lisa Saperstein, aka “The Woooooooooorst.” She’s even proven she can carry an indie film with this year’s Obvious Child, but perhaps her greatest contribution to pop culture (we exaggerate) is as the soft spoken title character from the series of short films co-written and directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp entitled Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, the first of which won awards at film festivals and things.

It seems that Conan O’Brien is also a fan of this character, and of Slate’s vocal performance, because they spent several minutes talking about it during the actress’ appearance on Conan, where Slate unveiled that, on top of motivational messages to herself, she also uses Marcel’s voice to sing covers of famous songs, including the 1975 song “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac. Marcel croons a little bit of the song for an impressed and delighted audience. Listen for yourself!

Thanks, it's truly a good article:

Popular music does not prize the older voice, at least not in this country. We are dazzled by the robust, youthful singers who part our hair on TV shows such as “American Idol” and “The Voice,” blast out of the radio, and belt from Broadway stages.

But what about artists who have been seasoned by life’s hardships and let us hear the results? Are we uncomfortable with them because they remind us that some day we, too, will be shadows of our younger selves?

I, for one, savor singers whose instruments are no longer spry and perfect, but nuanced and knowing. This year was flush with them, mature artists who released strong albums anchored by the wisdom and sophistication they bring to their singing.

Tony Bennett, Marianne Faithfull, Leonard Cohen, Lucinda Williams, Robert Plant, Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, Bette Midler, and Carlene Carter were all in top form in 2014, with voices that have mellowed like fine wines.
...
Stevie Nicks, who, at 66, is still twirling and singing about gypsies, recently put out a collection of previously unreleased material called “24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault.” Her voice was so . . . Stevie Nicks . . . that I asked the publicist for specific production details. Turns out Nicks had recorded her vocals last year.

Adams certainly wasn’t overly engaging — yet, of course likable — speaking only briefly and on script about his respect for Tina Turner, writing songs for Stevie Nicks (Let Me Down Easy which as eventually recorded by Roger Daltrey) and then soliciting a dance partner from the crowd for the Thorogood lite tune If Ya Wanna Be Bad — Ya Gotta Be Good.

Top 10 Victory Songs
by Bryan Wawzenek

Rock history is loaded with millionaires, legends and icons, so it should be a breeze to come up with the Top 10 Victory Songs, right? Turns out that these people with piles of cash, tons of fans and enviable love lives often avoid singing about those things. And if they do, it’s typically sardonically, as you’ll hear in some of the songs below. For these people who essentially “won life,” angst, struggle and loss tend to be the favored subjects (which is why our Top 10 Loser Songs list could have gone on forever). Still, we found a handful of classic artists who decided to sing when they were victorious on this list of Top 10 Victory Songs.

10
'I'm Still Standing'
Elton John

From: 'Too Low for Zero' (1983)
A sizable hit, aided by an early MTV staple shot in the South of France, 'I'm Still Standing' finds Sir Elton getting over a former lover in victorious fashion. Bernie Taupin's lyrics show resiliency in the face of heartbreak: "Did you think this fool could ever win? / Well, look at me, I'm coming back again." Love might have been the inspiration, but the song has become something of an anthem for Elton John, who remains a mega star around the world. Of course, as a piano player, he does his best work sitting down.

9
'Victory'
Megadeth

From: 'Youthanasia' (1994)
As John Lennon once ventured into the Beatles' past via a 'Glass Onion,' Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine name checks his band's former glories on the punishing final track to 'Youthanasia.' Mustaine did it as a joke, but ending up relating something a bit more personal. The choruses to 'Victory' emphasize the singer/guitarist's triumph over addiction ("Had fingers in my eyes / Had needles in my veins") and, perhaps, a nod to his firing from Metallica ("A knife right through my heart"). In the end, Mustaine wails, "I am a victory." He sounds as grateful as he is defiant.

8
'Winning'
Santana

From: 'Zebop!' (1981)
How could 'Winning' not make the Top 10 Victory Songs list? Argent alum Russ Ballard wrote the tune, and included it on his 1976 solo record, and in 1981 it became Santana's last big hit until the late '90s. This synth-stuffed single features vocalist Alex Ligertwood, who traces the trajectory of a man who goes from rock bottom to the top of the world. "I'm winning," his keening voice cries out, "And I don't intend on losing again." As a band, Santana couldn't deliver on that until almost 20 years later, when Carlos became 'Supernatural.'

7
'Paths of Victory'
Bob Dylan

From: 'The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3' (1991)
Back in his folk singing days, Bob Dylan heard 'Wayworn Traveler' by the Carter Family, then wrote new lyrics to the melody to create 'Paths of Victory.' Not long after, he wrote a completely new set of words, altered the time signature to 3/4 and delivered 'The Times They Are A-Changin'.' As such, 'Paths of Victory' and its vague tales of overcoming the political battles of the '60s, got left behind, only to be scooped up by fellow folkie Odetta and, later, the Byrds. Dylan's demo version finally saw release on the first edition of 'The Bootleg Series' in 1991.

6
'Long Distance Winner'
Buckingham Nicks

From: 'Buckingham Nicks' (1973)
This Stevie Nicks ditty is one of the only tracks from the vaunted 'Buckingham Nicks' album to be re-released in the digital era (as part of Stevie's 'Enchanted' boxed set). It's a moody gem in which she wraps her sweet and sour voice around poetic lines about a lover she admires, sometimes from a distance. Nicks sings, "I come running down the hill but you're fast / You're the winner, long distance winner," as her real-life lover at the time, Lindsey Buckingham, weaves circles around her with his prickly and chiming guitar.

5
'Winning Ugly'
The Rolling Stones

From: 'Dirty Work' (1986)
Between standing on the shoulders of blues giants, beating dicey altercations with the law and embracing corporate-sponsored mega tours, the Rolling Stones have been winning ugly for much of their career. So it's all the better that they wear it well, with a sneer and a smirk, on this track from the much-maligned 'Dirty Work.' The production is bombastic, but the sentiment is interesting as Mick Jagger compares his band to a scheming sports team: "I'm never wrong at all / I always fight the call... And we're winning ugly." With Mick's tongue planted firmly in his cheek, the message is still clear: Winning ugly sure beats losing.

4
'One Little Victory'
Rush

From: 'Vapor Trails' (2002)
The propulsive opening track from Rush's 'Vapor Trails' album contains an unmistakably positive sentiment. As with a great deal of this band's songs, drummer Neil Peart wrote the lyrics, which indicate that small victories can become major breakthroughs. In the chorus, singer/bassist Geddy Lee declares, "The greatest act can be one little victory." As with many songs on this list, sports references abound ("another chance to score"), but so do greater themes of tolerance, imagination and determination -- which Rush appears to suggest are all elements of notching a victory.

3
'Life's Been Good'
Joe Walsh

From: 'But Seriously, Folks ... ' (1978)
Very wealthy Eagles member. Solo star. Mind-blowingly great guitarist. Life's certainly been good to Joe Walsh, who drew on his dry sense of humor for this classic send-up of the rock star lifestyle. Walsh, somewhat lovingly, lays waste to aloof success stories with couplets like "My Maserati does 185 / I lost my license, now I don't drive" and "I live in hotels, tear out the walls / I have accountants pay for it all." It's funny because it's true. And Walsh's crunchy guitar only makes it better.

2
'Thunder Road'
Bruce Springsteen

From: 'Born to Run' (1975)
The Boss has spent the majority of his career chronicling the struggles of losers -- or people who tend to come out on the losing end, at least. But on the 'Born to Run' LP, there was still the promise of escape, of a narrow victory in the final seconds as the clock wound down. That's what happens on 'Thunder Road,' with a protagonist that "ain't no hero," but can still offer a chance for a better life via a long car ride into an uncertain future. That's about as close to victorious as Springsteen songs get, hence the famous kiss-off line, "It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win."

1
'We are the Champions'
Queen

From: 'News of the World' (1977)
And the most victorious song in the Top 10 Victory Songs List is this Queen epic. You can't do much better than declaring yourselves "the champions of the world." Written by Freddie Mercury with anthemic aspirations, 'We are the Champions,' has become exactly that -- a song that rings out consistently in sports arenas around the globe. Additionally, in 2011 some scientists declared that, mathematically, it was the "catchiest song" in music history. In terms of sing-alongs, Queen wins every time.

http://www.bustle.com/#/articles/64200-6-powerful-witchy-women-to-celebrate-on-friday-the-13th-because-theyre-basically-our-feminist-ancestors

#1 Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks transformed the music world with her shimmering songs, twirling scarves, and seductive contralto vocals. Her lyrics, style, and pop culture prominence inspired many to speculate about her powers, and guest starring as a witch on American Horror Story: Coven only cemented her enchanting aura.

2. Daenerys Targaryen

Game of Thrones’ Mother of Dragons is a hardcore feminist. Not only does she use her gifts (inflammability, dragon-taming, tactical brilliance) to help women, but also men. Her witchy ways have led her to free slaves and build an army to defeat a group of misogynistic oligarchs. Good luck, girl.

3. Elvira

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (played by Cassandra Peterson) proves you can use bombshell femininity to your advantage, particularly with the help of wise-cracking wit and a spell or two. She is still working her magic over 30 years after she started starring in her own TV show, reigning supreme as a scream queen.

http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia/1269983-bryan-adams-recklessly-rocks-halifax

“Many years ago we used to listen to music on these big plastic circles called records,” he deadpanned. “And if you put too many songs on one, the needle would skip.

“I’m sorry if I’m making this all sound too technical.”

This particular unreleased track proved to be of higher calibre than Boys Night Out, a song written by Adams and Vallance for[B] Stevie Nicks, “which she never did because we didn’t know her,” he explained, hanging his head.

“I don’t know why I’m telling you this story, ’cause it’s a downer”

The happy ending is that Let Me Down Easy turned out to be a solid ballad, worthy of rediscovery for Adams fans, and a compliment to the rest of the album.

Brits greatest hits: the inside story

The Brit awards are back on 25 February, hosted by Ant and Dec with performances by Madonna and Sam Smith. Former hosts and stars on the highs and lows of the past 35 years

You can spend the whole year preparing for the Brit awards: booking the hottest acts, securing enough rehearsal time, making sure all the right bigwigs are invited. Then you turn up and there’s not enough booze, the live acts are deafening the guests and the deputy prime minister is calling you into his office for a dressing-down.

The Brits might have a reputation for being terminally uncool, but even the best-planned ceremonies have a habit of going awry. We spoke to some of the ceremony’s major players to find out what it’s really like behind the scenes … and how Stevie Nicks’s hairdryer once saved the day.

Prezza’s hairdryer treatment

Rob Dickins Former record executive and Brits chairman from 1993-1995
In 1988, I said we had to cut the last award to get the Who [who had recently re-formed] on stage. The producers and Noel Edmonds said no. Noel started reading out the categories for best male artist, and I flipped. I went on stage, as the clock was ticking towards the news, and said: “The winner is Rick Astley. I am accepting on his behalf. Please welcome the Who.” I don’t think Rick has ever forgiven me.

Mick Fleetwood and Samantha Fox [who hosted the following year] weren’t meant to be funny, but it became the funniest show of all. I was in a box with Tim Burton, who was making Batman at the time, and we were crying with laughter.

John Prescott was on the table I was hosting in 1998. To get on to the table [to pour water over Prescott], one of Chumbawamba stepped on my wife’s thigh, so she had a bruise the size of a football. Pauline Prescott had to borrow Stevie Nicks’s hairdryer backstage to fix her hair. We got called in [to Prescott’s office] the next morning, and hauled over the coals.

Brits Greatest Hits, the Inside Story, February 22, 2015

“When I’m feeling a little depressed, a little anxious, a little depleted, I lean on that clip. And it works about 100 percent of the time! It’s about the magic of a weird little moment that you can’t plan. I’ve built my whole creative process around that. You can feel lightning in the video — she’s making up harmonies as she goes, on a warbled VHS that should put her out of tune but somehow doesn’t. The recording of ‘Wild Heart’ that she professionally made and meticulously crafted six months later, it pales in comparison to that moment."

She was compared to pop sensation Taylor Swift by the Eurosong panel on Friday night - but Ireland's talented 16-year-old Eurovision entrant hopeful says she's more of a Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac kind of girl.

On The Late Late show, Molly Sterling from Nenagh, Co Tipperary - a self-taught pianist and singer songwriter - was selected to represent Ireland at the 60th Eurovision Song Contest in Austria with her entry Playing with Numbers.

And her favourite artist was with her throughout the spine-tingling performance that won both the public and the jury vote.

"I love Stevie Nicks, I had one of her records in my piano stool so I said to myself: 'Stevie is right there, so it will all be fine,'" Molly told the Sunday Independent.

The result was the critically acclaimed album – her 10th – Ebb and Flow, which she recorded with a band of musicians who were intergral to the original LA Laurel Canyon scene in the ’70s and are joining her on tour, bassist Leland Sklar, guitarist Waddy Wachtel, and drummer Russell Kunkel.

As soon as Judith starts speaking about her band, the enthusiasm is clear.

‘They’re the originals,’ she says. ‘They are still monster session guys and live players,

‘Russ is pretty much on the road all the time with Lyle Lovett, Lee Sklar plays all the time, he never stops making records, and Waddy has been in the studio with Stevie Nicks, and does an awful lot of film music.

Lib at Large: Larkspur poet finds belated success with provocative ‘Transient Sex’

Larkspur resident Brent Reiten says he was stunned when his book of poetry, “Transient Sex,” failed to sell when he self-published it in 1989. “I was totally humiliated, perplexed, and finally, I just gave up,” he says. (Alan Dep/Marin Independent Journal)
By Paul Liberatore, Marin Independent Journal

A copy of “Transient Sex,” Brent Reiten’s book of poetry, rests on the writer’s kitchen table Thursday in Larkspur. After decades of obscurity, the book is getting interest from publishers in several countries. (Alan Dep/Marin Independent Journal)
Sex sells. Just not always right away.

A case in point: In 1989, Brent Reiten, a Marin County house painter with poetic ambitions, wrote and self-published “Transient Sex,” a collection of poems about his libidinous fantasy trysts with famous people, women and men — “Sex with Stevie Nicks,” “Sex with Meryl Streep,” “Sex with George Bush,” “Sex with Sylvester Stallone.” You get the idea.

dinnerdate with Beth Carpenter ; Former student at Nottingham Trent, Lives in Gloucester [Edition 3]
March 14 (Gloucestershire Echo, The) -- Kurt Cobain He's incredibly misunderstood but was a deep thinker and definitely someone who could hold an amazing conversation about everything other than conventional dinner-talktopics, like the weather. We would then act out the beginning scene from film True Romance and part our separate ways.

Heston Blumenthal If I didn't have a chef I'd be silly, right? If I did, I could just go and have a few drinks with the other guests and not worry about food. This chef's food is amazing and he comes up with such quirky things. Emily Blunt, actress The woman is a God.

She's quintessentially British and every good dinner party needs a larger than life Brit to keep it going and keep it sane. Plus, she has also lined up with stars like Tom Cruise and Joseph Gordon- Levitt so I would want to get all the dirt on them. Stevie Nicks I love Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. If I could meet her or let alone cook her dinner, my life would be made. Plus with the whole host of musical guests I would invite, we could form a super group. Jim Morrison I've always admiredhim but we all know he could go off the rails a bit, so if he didn't do anything too drastic, he would be a perfect guest. He is one of my musical favourites and is a legend.

"Just be Stevie Nicks," veritable voice of our generation Tavi Gevinson once told us in her groundbreaking TED talk. It's advice I've been taking to heart ever since, however fruitless it may be in a literal sense. Just be Stevie Nicks.

Being Stevie Nicks might become a little more naturally after seeing her belt it out in the flesh, something that you can and should do later this year: Fleetwood Mac have announced their 2015 tour Down Under.

*heavy breathing intensifies*

FM stalwarts have reunited for the tour, as Christine McVie is back on board: the Australian tour will see Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie and John McVie tour a string of capital city and regional dates across the country in October-November. Christine McVie broke her long Fleetwood Mac hiatus last year, after leaving the band in 1998.

You and your parents, for once, are both equally keen about something. Dates for Fleetwood Mac's tour are below; tickets are on sale on April 1. SA, NT, Tassie and ACT, always the bridesmaids, will have to go their own way in October to a more blessed capital city, as all miss out:

“Night before last, I watched Stevie Nicks, for two hours, spin,” Judd said. The reflection on another iconic musician brought Judd to wanting to become “better and bitter” as her career moves forward. She mused on country queen Tammy Wynette being a “stylist” and not just a singer, noting that there’s magic in being an artist who’s recognizable from the first seconds of a song. Judd’s also got love for another big star, and it’s the stuff buddy-cop comedies are made of.

Excerpt from a Slate article about RuPaul 3/24/2015 By J. Bryan Lowder

http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2015/03/24/rupaul_at_the_nypl_paul_holdengraber_interviews_the_drag_queen_star.html

Save for a smart interviewing gambit involving a discussion of each of Ru’s self-stated influences that went into her drag persona, the rest of the interview took on the rather unexpected and delightfully strange hue of a philosophical disquisition on the nature of performance and reality. Ru spent most of the two hours waxing New Agey on how life is about figuring out how to play within false constructs (like, say, an NYPL interview) and how “if there are people who are judging you, go to another play.” Holdengräber tried to keep up by offering quotations and references like a grad student at a dinner party. There were moments when it seemed like the delicate and vaguely surrealist balance the two had managed to strike might dissolve into legitimate misunderstanding, but all in all, the audience ate it up, not least because Ru was prone to summarizing her musings on choosing your own adventure with ejaculations like: “You’re a witch! Stevie Nicks!”

It's a fleetwood mac night on axs tv! Rock legends featuring the band was just on

Now it's a show called the world's greatest tribute bands. The band is called Mirage. The Stevie nicks looks just like her!! The clothes and the ways she moves is unbelievable! She says the same things Stevie says. Her voice ain't too great though. The Christine of the band is pretty and sounds decent. The Lindsey of the band is hot!! Looks nothing like the real Lindsey, but I'll take him, yes please! I'm gonna try to be a groupie for a tribute band, what a looser. But out of the three singers, his voice is more like the real counter part.

After the tribute band Live in Boston is up next.

Kid and Playful: Jessie Baylin Steps Out of Her Dark Shadow

Yet while exploring your inner child, you can dance to this mood-swinging album while listening to Baylin's luscious voice that adopts the qualities of some of her favorite singers -- Astrud Gilberto, Billie Holiday, Dusty Springfield and Stevie Nicks.

"I loved how Stevie created a world," Baylin said. "I thought that was always neat for my voice. I loved Astrud Gilberto melodies and just where her voice sat in the songs, just always ... it takes you away. It's like listening ... it's instant vacation. And I just loved that as a kid. I felt exotic. And I hope on this record in particular that I could bring some of those elements in."

From shelf to shelf I worked methodically until, at the end of an aisle, I found an alcove containing a soldered **** ruby-inlaid silver box maked Syd Barrett's Sanity. From there, things grew increasingly ghoulish. A stanchion from the toppled lighting rig that crushed Curtis Mayfield's legs. An airtight plastic tub labeled Contents of D.Boon's Fridge at Time of Death. The eroded septum of Stevie Nicks, carefully wrapped in a lace glove and packed in a rusty snuff tin. David Crosby's liver, imprisoned in a translucent cube of amber like some sort of Damien Hirst wet dream.

Thirteen must-have songs on your ‘Freaks and Geeks’ playlist

ByPamela Gocobachi 2:30 pm, April 22, 2015 Hypable

http://www.hypable.com/freaks-and-geeks-playlist/

10. ‘Rhiannon’ – Fleetwood Mac

Why we picked it: One of our favorite relationships to see unfold throughout the series is the friendship between Lindsay and the prickly Kim Kelly. One of our favorite scenes between the two takes place during the beginnings of their friendship when Kim starts explaining the rumors surrounding Stevie Nicks allegedly being a witch to Lindsay and so we couldn’t resist putting a Stevie song amongst this list. We may have stretched it with this Fleetwood Mac track, but we’re going with it because like Kim’s theory, this song also has a partial reference to a witch. But bottom line? It is also an amazing track so it had to be included on our playlist.

[Stevie's Photo is at the top of the article, with Debbie Harry]

By Kate BeaudoinApril 24, 2015

http://mic.com/articles/116246/what-happened-to-the-female-rock-star

Stevie Nicks: The legend from Fleetwood Mac is a rock star, because she's always been ruthlessly honest and fearless. The first time she picked up a guitar and wrote a song, it was about heartbreak, and when she wrote for Fleetwood Mac, many of those songs were about her doomed relationship with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. But through all the struggle, Nicks was sexy and sophisticated, and strove for equality by embodying the equal.

"We fought very hard for feminism, for women's rights," Nicks told a crowd at South by Southwest in 2013, according to Rolling Stone. "What I'm seeing today is a very opposite thing. I don't know why, but I see women being put back in their place. And I hate it. We're losing all we worked so hard for, and it really bums me out."

Nicks completely owned her femininity and her vulnerability, all while proving that she could hold her own as a creative contributor to a high-powered popular band. She completely disproved the "man behind the music" myth.

I Bleed And I Vote: Q&A With "Stop Taxing My Period" Petition Activist

Tavi Gevinson once told us, "just be Stevie Nicks," - a piece of advice that I've often thought about, and probably always will. Stevie Nicks once said something that really stuck with me, when she wrote:

"The world teaches [girls] that the way you exist in it is disgusting — you watch boys cringe backward in your dorm room when you talk about your period, blue water pretending to be blood in a maxi pad commercial. It is little things, and it is constant...the reality of your life is impolite to talk about."

Talking about menstruation and the hardships it inherently brings isn't an easy thing to approach - such a conversation has been conditionally suppressed in the same way women strive to conceal their monthly ordeal: tampons stuffed at the bottom of handbags, used pads immediately trashed in sterile bins, products being laden with artificial smells in attempt to hide natural ones.

14. Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac): The strength and success of Fleetwood Mac is due in no small part to their ensemble aesthetic * but if there's one band member whose iconic stature is slightly higher than the rest, it's Stevie Nicks. Rookie's Tavi Gevinson summed it up best when she said, "My favorite thing about her, other than, like, everything, is that she has always been unapologetically present on stage, and unapologetic about her flaws and about reconciling all of her contradictory feelings and she makes you listen to them and think about them."

I Baked a Birthday Cake for Stevie Nicks

In the spring of 1978 I got to touch the little finger of Fame. My new job was in a cool place called Longhi’s on Front Street, down from the Blue Maxx and I, at a very uncool and (still) awkward seventeen, had so much cool around me, I felt almost cool.
Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors had been out about a year but it was new to us on Maui, since most things back then arrived by boat. All the members of Fleetwood Mac were hanging out in Lahaina that year and their place of frequency was Longhis Restaurant! They regularly sat at a corner booth, known as the Fleetwood Mac booth, and soon we all stopped gawking, they were there so often.

One day when I came to work, the prep list left for me by Jan said to bake a carrot sheet cake, to be sold whole to the Fleetwood Mac table for Stevie Nicks’ birthday. Her note said “make it good” or something to that effect. “Wow,” I remember thinking, “that’s cool.” So I baked the carrot cake, topped it with our luscious cream cheese frosting and lovingly grated little flecks of orange peel over it.

Dinner rush came, the cake went out and all was well. I was scrubbing down the maple table when it happened. Led Zeppelin blasting from the big black speakers crashed into silence. I turned toward the main prep kitchen behind me and there she was, a blurry apparition of skirts and shawls, floating through our food-world . . . towards me! I turned away from her, afraid to look (I know, still awkward) and resumed scrubbing my table. Then I heard the bathroom door close behind me.

Was it clean in there? Why was she in our bathroom? Were the other ones broken? WERE there other bathrooms? (I don’t remember). Was the apple pipe stocked with hash? Did she like the cake? All I could do was ponder these important questions as she peed behind that door then left. I turned back toward the kitchen only in time to see the beautiful edge of her skirt disappear like a butterfly wing around the corner of the kitchen into the dining room. If she remembers that birthday of hers at Longhis on Maui, she’ll probably recall that snotty baker who ignored her. No, not snotty, just shy as hell.

Adele Has "Best Night" of Her Life With Stevie Nicks: Picture

EntertainmentMay. 28, 2015 AT 1:20PM By Madeline Boardman.

Rumor has it that two vocal powerhouses met in London on Wednesday, May 27. The ever-elusive Adele took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to share a rare photo of herself with none other than Stevie Nicks.

The British performer, 27, found herself in the presence of the rock idol when Nicks' band Fleetwood Mac took the stage at London's O2 Arena for the latest stop on the ongoing On with the Show world tour. Adele cozies up to Nicks, 67, in the sweet shot, grinning as the two blonde singers pose in head-to-toe black.

"So...tonight was THE best night of my life," the "Rolling in the Deep" singer tweeted. "I love you Stevie Nicks!! The queen of melodies! Thanks for everything x."

According to UK music mag NME, Nicks acknowledged Adele during the show, telling the crowd of the Grammy winner, "I told her, 'You're going to be me in 40 years. You're going to still be up onstage doing what you're doing because of your songwriting.'" Nicks then reportedly dedicated her performance of the 1970s classic "Landslide" to the "Skyfall" singer.

Adele, who continues to ready her long-awaited third studio album, was hardly the only star at Fleetwood Mac's packed show. The veteran musicians, who are making stops in big cities around the globe through November, were also visited last night by Florence Welch, and Harry Styles with his sister Gemma and mother Anne.

Sources tell Us Weekly that Styles and his family spent time with Nicks backstage at the O2. The One Direction star baked a birthday cake at his home and brought it to the "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" singer, who celebrated her 67th birthday on Tuesday, May 26.

[from an article about Jesse Camp] Esquire by Nathan Rabin June 8, 2015

http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/a35552/jesse-camp-green-denim-concert-recap/

Camp's debut album, Jesse & The 8th Street Kidz, represented his big chance at stardom. There's an unmistakable rock star fantasy camp vibe to the album, as the modestly talented, vocally-challenged but undeniably charismatic newcomer duets with Stevie Nicks, collaborates with Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen and fronts a band that includes veterans of Camp's favorite groups, including Hanoi Rocks. The question isn't why the album didn't succeed but rather why anyone thought it would in the first place. Camp was peddling a discredited form of music a decade past its heyday via a network that by that point was more famous for not playing music videos than for championing and popularizing the medium.

So, that Sound City movie Dave made. It was good stuff, learning all about the killer records made in that studio, on that Neve mixing console. The same place, in fact, where Nirvana recorded Nevermind. But, as is the Grohl way, he turned it into an excuse to have some of his mates over and play some music, and this fabulous slow-burner with Fleetwood Mac chanteuse Stevie Nicks is probably the best thing on the resulting Sound City Players album. You can see them on the movie being all coy around her too, bless.

[From an article about the 25 things you never knew about Laverne and Shirley]

18. Shirley Feeney’s beloved Boo Boo Kitty became an inanimate series regular when Williams pulled the stuffed animal prop out from under a bed during rehearsal one day. Laverne and Shirley were spring cleaning, and while Shirley was supposed to find dust bunnies under the bed, she found a black, stuffed animal cat, instead. She improvised and called it Boo Boo Kitty, in honor of one of her mom’s real cats. Because there was only one of the props — the propmaster couldn’t find a duplicate — it had to be locked up after every show for safekeeping, but Williams writes in Shirley, I Jest! that, years later, the propmaster gave Boo Boo Kitty to her. The toy cat also had its own celebrity fan. Williams writes that when she met Stevie Nicks backstage at a Bruce Springsteen concert, Nicks greeted her with, “Oh, hi! It’s you. I love Boo Boo Kitty!”

Joseph’s win is significant, as the singer/songwriter is the first female to win the award. Speaking on her own female influences, she said: 'I saw Fleetwood Mac last night, so Stevie Nicks. I'm in a tricky age for being part of this, and yet last night I saw people who are – are they in their 60s? And it's proof that it doesn't matter what age you are. And I need to remember that because I do feel awkward about it, but last night was proof that it's not about being young or old or male or female – if it affects you it affects you.'

'Call Me'
From: 'American Gigolo' (1980)

Superstar disco producer Giorgio Moroder originally wanted Stevie Nicks to help write and record the theme song from the grimy male-prostitute movie 'American Gigolo.' Luckily, Debbie Harry and Blondie stepped in (Nicks was busy preparing her debut solo album) and checked out with the biggest hit of their career: "Call Me" stayed at No. 1 for six weeks. It came out just as disco was retreating back to the dance clubs. Blondie's New Wave spin on the genre was just what it needed.

Are there any other cameos you're hoping for?

"I think Kacey Musgraves is fantastic and her new album's great. She'd be a cool little addition to the show – give Hayden the runaround a bit. And I guess Gunnar needs a new girlfriend… That would be fine with me!

"Guy-wise, I think Hunter Hayes is great. I love him. He's a really lovely guy and a great musician. There's just scope for all kinds of cameos. Up until now, we know the Minions as the small helpers to the despicable Gru. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minion kind from annihilation. “I hadn’t even thought of that until you brought that up”, she said, when reminded how many times she said her son made her watch Despicable Me. “She is really enjoying playing with this villainy”.

When asked over Twitter which song had inspired her, she replied: “Two: Sara by Fleetwood Mac and Hello Like Before by Bill Withers”.

Donna Isbell Walker, [email protected] 12:07 a.m. EDT July 4, 2015

The Eagles’ 1972 hit “Take It Easy” opens with a guy singing about “seven women on my mind.”

The lyrics never specify their identities, just the narrator’s issues with women who want to own him, stone him or be his friend. We may never know the names of those mysterious femme fatales, but the Eagles, who play the Bon Secours Wellness Arena on July 12, have attracted plenty of other women to their orbit over the decades.

Here are seven other women who’ve been important to the band members through the years:

•3. Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac’s songbird romanced two members of the Eagles, Henley and guitarist Joe Walsh. Nicks’ tumultuous time with Henley inspired the Nicks-penned Fleetwood Mac song “Sara.” And while Henley and Nicks may not have been a love match, their vocal harmonies soar in their duet “Leather and Lace.”

I stole this from Johnny Stew's Facebook page. What are the odds of using an obscure Street Angel song to reference rain when "thunder only happens when it's raining" is ingrained in the minds of virtually everyone in America?

http://www.sltrib.com/home/2756260-155/utah-forecast-warm-and-occasionally-wet

Singing about Utah's warm, wet and thunderous midweek forecast, Stevie Nicks might huskily tempt you to "open up the window ... throw away the pain [and] take time, baby, to listen to the rain."

Along the Wasatch Front, Wednesday's forecast called for highs near 90 degrees will be broken in the afternoon and evening by showers and occasional cracks of electricity. Thursday's weather will again seek highs near 90, with another cycle of thunderstorms expected during the afternoon hours.

Southern Utahns get a break from the rain and thunderclaps, though. Breezes of 10-20 mph will cool off Redrocks denizens from the mid-90s as the end of this Pioneer Day-shortened work week approaches. Why not find some shade, a cool drink and enjoy the "Desert Wind" via the instrumental poetry of French bluesman Scott Bis.

The Utah Division of Air Quality rated Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Utah counties "yellow," or compromised for air quality heading toward the weekend, but the rest of the state earns "green," or healthy grades.

The Intermountain Allergy & Asthma website reported that chenopods were "high" and mold "moderate" on its pollen index, but other allergens were listed "low" as of Wednesday.

For for extensive forecast information, visit the Tribune's weather page at: http://sltrib.com/weather/.

Billboard, By Gary Graff | July 29, 2015 9:00 AM EDT

There are, in fact, plenty of concrete concepts in Clutch's dozen new songs this time out. "The lyrics are more narrative than probably any other previous Clutch album," acknowledges Fallon, who even invokes an early life passion for Stevie Nicks on another track, "Sucker for the Witch." "There's more action that happens. When I write a song there's usually some vague movie that's running in the back of my mind that the music has evoked, and I try to bring that to the words. I never wanted to be heavy-handed and say, 'This is a rock opera' or a concept record, because that can be oppressive. But I like lyrics and music that sound cinematic, because I like the escapism in rock 'n' roll."

Entertainment Weekly Review of Ricki and the Flash 8/4/2015

by Leah Greenblatt

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/08/04/ricki-and-flash-ew-review

Of all the parts Meryl Streep has played on screen—nun, nuclear activist, pill-popping matriarch, Prada-clad editrix—she’s never been credited as a magician. But that’s essentially what she does in every film she appears in: sprinkle the pixie dust of her ineffable Streep-ness over even the most banal scripts and underwritten roles. Ricki and the Flash isn’t a great movie; its archetypes are tired and its plot turns textbook. But she commits utterly to Ricki, an aging free spirit attempting to reconnect with her three adult children years after leaving them behind to pursue rock stardom. That sacrifice hasn’t landed her much beyond a dumpy L.A. apartment, a weekly gig cranking out Tom Petty covers for drowsy barflies in Tarzana, and a sweet but equally broke boyfriend-slash-bandmate (Rick Springfield). When a family emergency calls her back to Indiana, she can barely afford the ticket, and it’s clear how poorly she fits into the Midwestern propriety of her old life; with her thumb rings, spiky side braids, and smudged eyeliner, she looks like Stevie Nicks’ insolvent sister.

Maybe the greatest actress of our time needs
to rethink which movies to star in. Why Meryl,
why?

This would have been good for Stevie herself to
play. Not much would have been expected of her.
And she would fit the part.

I was actually more excited when I thought we'd see Meryl being a rock star than I am to know that the plot deals mostly with a mom reconnecting with estranged children. A story Meryl has been asked to tell before. I mean, the mom in Kramer v. Kramer might have gone on to become a rock star after she gave custody of the son back to Dustin Hoffman.

Ricki isn't as much of a departure for the actress as I thought it would be, just from looking at the posters.

http://www.malibutimes.com/blogs/article_e459e580-4ddb-11e5-9d5f-53b231bb9a55.html

A few months ago, my friend Tris Imboden – the “happy drummer” for the band Chicago – was driving me around and pointed to a home.

“Stevie Nicks lives there,” he observed.

“Who is he?” I asked Tris.

He slammed on the brakes. “Are you putting me on?” he said. (I guess I was supposed to know who this fellow was.) “Stevie Nicks is a she not a he,” Tris explained as if addressing somebody who had just landed from Mars.

“Stevie Wonder is a he so why can’t Stevie Nicks be a he?” I wanted to know.

Tris continued driving and sighed, “You are hopeless.”

When I first arrived in town, a neighbor told me that Don Henley lived near me. I asked him who Don Henley was. I can still recall his look of utter disbelief bordering on disdain. “He plays with the Eagles,” he informed me in a most condescending tone.

I checked online and reported back to my neighbor, “Don Henley does not play with the Eagles.”

Condescension became total derision, “Don Henley is the Eagles,” he reported as if talking to a first grader.

“Well, you might want to know I checked online, all the way back to the early 1960s, and Don Henley never played for the Philadelphia Eagles. I would put money on it!”

My neighbor could barely contain his frustration. “The rock band the Eagles not the Philadelphia Eagles,” he explained, leaving out the words “you idiot,” which were clearly implied.

I come by my difficulty recognizing the famous quite honestly. My dad was at a Paris hotel back in the 1980s when he saw a woman whom he recognized, but wasn’t certain from where he knew her. He thought and thought, and finally concluded she was a member of his country club in New Jersey. Just as he was about to approach her, he heard somebody exclaim, “There’s Lady Bird Johnson.” It’s not everybody who can confuse the former first lady of the nation with a member of his country club.

So, if any of you have some stars to show me, you’d be better off pointing me to the heavens.

But the band tends to nail everything to the wall perhaps a little too emphatically; even songs that began as ballads, such as the spooky “I Will Never Die,” which interpolated a bit of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” end in a pounding frenzy. Call it a case of the Mumfs, after Mumford & Sons, who seem to have started that trend.

“Perhaps the strongest performance of the evening was his cover of Tom Petty’s “Southern Accents,” which Johnny Cash also recorded on 1996’s Unchained. Former Falmouth Restaurant Owner Pens Memoir

Posted: Friday, October 9, 2015 12:00 am Cape News

By JOANNE BRIANA-GARTNER

Don McKeag, former Falmouth resident and one-time owner of the Flying Bridge Restaurant on Falmouth Harbor, has written a memoir of his colorful life and the people he’s encountered along the way. Mr. McKeag will be at the Flying Bridge Friday, October 9, from 3 to 6 PM to sign copies of “Well At Least I Owned a Rolls Royce” and to chat with former patrons and friends who frequented the Flying Bridge in the 1980s when Mr. McKeag was at its helm.

* * *

Although he mingled with hollywood and political elite, Mr. McKeag was not one to cater to the whims of the rich and famous. One chapter has him refusing to ask Flying Bridge customers to leave at the request of Stevie Nicks and her entourage who wanted the entire restaurant to themselves, and adding a few choice words about Ms. Nicks’s musical talent in front of a patron who turned out to be musician James Taylor.

About Ted Kennedy, Mr. McKeag said that although “we didn’t always agree politically, I loved him. He was so kind and fun. He hated snobbery.”

The thing is, before it recalls a worse version of the mediocre "Million Dollar Arm", "Rock the Kasbah" starts out OK as the story of a rock legend-adjacent has-been who retells the same questionable stories about Stevie Nicks headbutting him and how he was the reason Jimi Hendrix played "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock rather than working to create new, credible anecdotes.

30 Years Ago: Tom Petty’s ‘Pack Up the Plantation’ Marks First Official Live Release
By Nick DeRiso October 31, 2015 11:27 AM

Old friends suddenly reappeared. Stevie Nicks was featured on two cuts, including “Insider” and “Needles and Pins,” the latter of which originally came to fame via the Searchers. Both were from the Heartbreakers’ 1981 dates, in the same period that Petty dueted with Nicks on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” from the Fleetwood Mac singer’s solo debut.) These archival items featured original bassist Ron Blair, while replacement Howie Epstein appeared on the rest.

Tom Petty Reveals Struggles With Heroin Abuse and Heartbreak in Must-Read Biography: Exclusive Excerpts

1985's "Don't Come Around Here No More" was a breakthrough smash for Petty, but it almost didn't happen: He, co-writer/producer Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and co-producer Jimmy Iovine made it in a recording session for Stevie Nicks.
"Tom had come down, and he liked what we were working on," explains Nicks. "I was writing madly. I had my little book, and I was just writing, writing, writing. Tom, Jimmy and Dave were sort of talking. But it was five in the morning, and I was really tired. So I said, 'I'm going to go. I'm leaving you guys, and I'll be back tomorrow.' I left, and when I got back the next day, at something like 3 p.m., the whole song was written. And not only was it written; it was spectacular. Dave was standing there saying to me, 'Well, there it is! It's really, really good.' And they go to me, 'Well, it's terrific, and now you can go out ... and you can sing it.' Tom had done a great vocal, a great vocal. I just looked at them and said, 'I'm going to top that? Really?' I got up, thanked Dave, thanked Tom, fired Jimmy and left."

So now Stevie claims she fired Jimmy over this, wasn't the story prevously that he quit because she was becoming increasingly difficult to work with?

Sometimes you can just use it for a bedwarmer. sometimes if you have a stomach ache, it can help soothe that. It's good for cramping. Or you can put it any place where you might put a hot pack. For instance, if you put a hot pack on your back, neck or knee, you could do the same with a hot water bottle.

WHAAAT?
That is absurd.
Idc how wealthy a person is (by legal means or otherwise, as per the referenced article), I think it's ridiculous to spend that much money on this kind of event. I wonder if it's even healthy for any young teen to have a bat/bar mitzvah, quinceñera, debut, etc that costs TEN MILLION DOLLARS?! It was back to Arizona where he would have another back surgery and of course a few more unique encounters. He was hired as a general laborer by the Phoenix Greenhouse, a wholesale plant business serving four states and Mexico, and within three months was promoted to general manager. He always did have a green thumb and enjoyed telling the story of how he would assist Stevie Nicks in picking out plants and flowers for her mother. And, we still have the backgammon board on which he played a few games with Omar Sharif, while at a neighborhood gathering. "Omar always won," he said.

[Stevie's concert was one of the ones where no amount was listed as being paid for use of the stadium]

Loophole lets celebrities dodge Pittsburgh entertainment tax, audit finds
December 16, 2015 12:00 AM By Mark Belko / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

http://www.post-gazette.com/local/city/2015/12/16/Loophole-lets-stars-dodge-Pittsburgh-entertainment-tax-audit-finds/stories/201512160105

Kenny Chesney and Taylor Swift both played to big crowds at Heinz Field in 2013. But what they paid for use of the stadium ended up being as divergent as their audiences.

While Ms. Swift paid $70,411 based on the 3 percent facility usage fee levied by the city, Mr. Chesney forked over a mere $131, according to an audit released Tuesday by city Controller Michael Lamb.

The 3 percent fee is paid by non-resident entertainers, performers, athletes and other for-profit users of Heinz Field, PNC Park and Consol Energy based on the person’s salary for the time they are in the city.

Mr. Lamb’s performance audit regarding the direct revenue received by the city from the sports venues found big discrepancies in the amounts paid by the performers who played at those facilities, and at Mellon Arena before it closed, between 2009 and 2013, the period measured.

The controller suspects that some performers have “found a way to say I didn’t make any money that night.” In some cases what entertainers reported as income in a performance ended up being “significantly less than what we see from the gate,” he said.

While the audit concluded that the properties owned by the Pittsburgh Sports & Exhibition Authority and the city Stadium Authority have generated $107.2 million in taxes and fees for the city over the five-year period, the disparities related to the facility usage fee stood out.

For instance, during Consol Energy’s first year in 2010, Paul McCartney paid $75,000 and $57,329 in usage fees in his two performances opening the arena, while Lady Gaga ponied up $22,571 for her show, the Eagles $11,273, and Justin Bieber $16,333. The Trans Siberian Orchestra paid $704 and the Harlem Globetrotters $102.

At Heinz Field in 2011, Ms. Swift paid $63,486, while Mr. Chesney forked over $135. U2 paid $26,855.

In other cases, no payment was listed by a performer’s name. Such cases included a Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band 2011 Consol show, a Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks 2012 show, and a Barry Manilow 2013 performance.

Mr. Lamb’s office called on the Peduto administration and city council, which had requested the audit, to make closing the loophole “a top priority,” saying it is costing the city thousands of dollars. But how performers take advantage of the loophole was unclear.

“It’s just a loophole we’ve got to find a way to close,” Mr. Lamb said. “What we know is that we’re getting less from one-time performances than we expected and we think it’s because they’re taking advantage of the loophole.”

One recommendation is for entertainers to obtain local tax ID numbers so the city can work more directly with them to collect taxes rather than their management companies. It also recommended that performers pay a penalty if payments are not made within six months of a performance. In some cases, the city would receive tax payments several years after the entertainer performed, the city’s finance department told auditors.

Overall, the audit found that the sports facilities had generated $107.2 million in amusement, parking, payroll, earned income and real estate taxes and usage fees over the five-year period. Federal, state and local funding for the venues and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center totaled more than $800 million.

Mr. Lamb said the city had benefited from the construction of the facilities given the amount of revenue they generated and that city contributions to the projects were minimal.

“Some may argue whether it’s a good deal for county taxpayers or state taxpayers, but for the city itself it’s been a very good deal,” he said.

Good point. Does Stevie go around saying "lover" often? Not really. It's too directly sexual. Even in songs. I mean she has said lover (Nightmare) but even in lyrics she's more often to say "you're not my love" than to say "lover."

she calls everything "love" ...... from her multi-year living together relationship with Lindsey to a shag on the road to a six week fling. Covers a lot of ground, that love.

How David Bowie Avoided the Cliché of the Aging Rock Star

Bowie managed to resist the cult of youth that later trapped Mick Jagger and others of their generation.

By Marissa Brostoff January 21, 2016 New Republic

https://newrepublic.com/article/128105/david-bowie-avoided-cliche-aging-rock-star

before September 11, 2001, and the discursive shifts it entailed, cultural critic John Strausbaugh published a book that revealed perhaps more than it intended to about the politics of this mockery. Rock Till You Drop is a polemic with a simple thesis. “Rock is youth music,” Strausbaugh writes. “It is best played by young people, for young people, in a setting that is specifically exclusionary of their parents and anyone their parents’ age.” Much of what follows are bellicose descriptions cataloging the “horrifically aged bodies” of fellow baby boomers like Eric Clapton (“paunchy and chinless, bearded and burghermeisterly”) and Stevie Nicks (“stuffed like a sausage into some girdle, her pancake makeup thick and hard as china”—perfect fodder, he snickers, for the drag queens who adopted her as an icon). Proudly though not inventively offensive, Strausbaugh uses age to legitimize the disparagement of bodies the world’s most conventional male gaze would prefer not to alight upon.

So it was OK for David Bowie to "age" , but not Stevie?? Because he remained "drugged out" thin? How absurd!

I totally ignore views such as these because if you think about it, probably only one in a million people would agree with it. Therefore it's irrelevant and shouldn't bother anyone....idiot.

exactly. nothing to get worked up about, except unfortunately it's not just 1 in a million people holding unfortunate views like that. :distress:

and you can find examples of Bowie being disparaged for being "fat" or looking "ragged" after his heart attack such as if you read some of the comments here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIFmNRDuM3Y - although turns out it was just a costume for a particular performance and that he performed 5 mins later with Arcade Fire at that same show looking completely different - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-wEBmLht5g

about "drugged out", Bowie was very clear that he used to be drugged out and alcoholic and that's why he wasn't drinking even a drop alcohol his last 20+ (or more) years.

Stevie Nicks (“stuffed like a sausage into some girdle, her pancake makeup thick and hard as china”—perfect fodder, he snickers, for the drag queens who adopted her as an icon).

Denver had a booming drag scene from 1992 all the way through the new millennium, and I WISH there had been Stevie drag queens.

But I am glad she gave up those awful late-80's era corsets she wore.

The famous names went well beyond track, however. Coe roomed with John Ferris, at that time already a two-time Olympic bronze medalist swimmer, and lived at the Beta fraternity house, where he crossed paths with all sorts of Olympians and NFL draft picks. He rolled joints for the football team’s defensive line, which, with Heisman winner Jim Plunkett at the helm, would win Stanford’s first Rose Bowl in 30 years (as you might expect from a work subtitled “A Memoir of the Counterculture,” Coe freely discusses sex and drug use, though it does not overwhelm the book). There are even appearances from a young Stevie Nicks, who played concerts on Beta’s front steps, and Sally Ride, who Coe recalls seeing (or perhaps imagining) while tripping on mescaline.

The RIAA is currently trending on Twitter because of the news that they are now including streaming in their certifications. The first article that pops up when you click the trend features a random gold disc on a wall and guess what it is?! It's Rock a Little! Out of all the gold or platinum discs that the RIAA has given out, that one was used. Great. :)

Listening to Stevie Nicks With Kim Gordon and Daryl K

The women browse the huge record collection in the house where they're shooting, stopping occasionally to play an album. Gordon jokingly looks for covers with '70s, California vibes, "something denim-y" to match their outfits. Finding various all-male acts like the Allman Brothers and Donovan, she says quietly, almost to herself, "How about some women?" After searching for a Runaways record to no avail, she settles on Rita Coolidge's self-titled album and plays "Born Under a Bad Sign," before moving on to Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. "I met Stevie once ," she tells Kerrigan. "She was so down-to-earth." It’s a sweet moment from someone who must have inspired that same comment in legions of fans herself. Even icons have their icons.

So we’re listening to a slightly warped edition of Three Dog Night’s “Harmony” ($2), and my mom picks up “Rumours” in its sleeve. It came out in 1977, the same year I was born. My parents were friends with a pretty famous rock band back in the ’70s. They shall remain nameless, but they were a big enough deal that members of KISS were backstage at a show in New York City that year, and my mom was there too.

“Is that Stevie Nicks?” she asks, looking at the photo of the singer and Mic Fleetwod in their ballerina shoes on the cover.

She goes on to tell us how she started talking with one of her friends in the unnamed band, and he started bragging about his relationship with Stevie Nicks.

My mother was 24 and I was a few months old, her first child, and her friend didn’t bother to ask about me.

“Who gives a s--- about Stevie Nicks?” my mom says. “I just had a baby!”

I don’t know the last time my mom made me laugh so hard.

[Tuk Smith of Biters on Stevie]

NRR: If you could collaborate with anyone in particular who would be your dream collaboration?

Tuk: I get this stuff all the time. It’s weird because do you want to collaborate with somebody that you really, really love but they aren’t as relevant today or do you want to collaborate with somebody who is more relevant now that could help your career. You know in a perfect world, for some reason I tell people this, I’m obsessed with music that came out way before I was born, I don’t know why I’m so attracted to 60’s/70’s music, I might have been a rockstar in the 70’s that died and then reincarnated, I don’t know but you know.

I love 70’s Stevie Nicks, I would love to collaborate with her, Phil, Tom Petty, ****in’ Bonn Scott, I would love to do a track with Marc Bolan, you know. It would nice to do a track with Axl because I’m just as redneck and I think in Axl’s prime, which I would call my prime I could probably take him in a street fight. I’m just kidding (laughing).

If you could have your choice of singing a duet with anyone, who would it be and why?

This is very difficult, there are lots of people I would love to sing with. But if I could pick anyone in the world, it would be Stevie Nicks. Her voice is so strong and soulful, and her stage presence is incredible. Performing with her would be so high energy. I can only dream what that experience would be like.

But if I could pick one person to write songs with, it would be Tyler Joseph from the band Twenty One Pilots. He writes with such passion and courage. I would love to just talk to him for hours about life.

16: Stevie Nicks, 'Bella Donna'
Stevie Nicks began a tandem solo career that played to her MOR strengths with this debut project. The songs, including "Edge of Seventeen" and duets with Don Henley and Tom Petty, were largely straightforward and pop friendly, without the quirky mannerisms that often surrounded her work with Fleetwood Mac. Not surprisingly, it sold millions.

Although this is ranked #16 on the year-end list of 1981, Bella Donna is nearly always within the top 10, usually within the top 5 of all the other lists. However, the album was extremely popular in 1982 also so maybe that's why.

Stevie Nicks

When I took over the Troubadour the kitchen was flooded and the club was too broke to fix it. It was so bad that we took these pallets and we placed them on the kitchen floor so we could walk above the water. [Laughs.] So we coordinated this big 25th anniversary event and we got everybody to come back from the old days. George Carlin came, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. We made a huge amount of money that month and were able to fix the plumbing. I remember Stevie Nicks had an incident that night when she wasn't on the guest list and was unable to get into the door. That was very memorable.

http://www.latimes.com/socal/glendale-news-press/entertainment/tn-blr-et-music-review-waddy-wachtel-20160226-story.html

Waddy is 69 years old. If Stevie is hoping to do much more solo touring, the stalwarts in her solo band aren't getting any younger than her bandmates in Fleetwood Mac.

I love the typo that he worked on Stevie and Lindsey's album in 1980 and they've been together ever since. That's Stevie Knicks, for those who didn't know.

He says he's recently worked with Sheryl Crow and is about to work with LeAnn Rimes... no mention of any Stevie solo work.....

Also, Brett and Al will be playing with him at his solo gigs.... taking a break from all those Mac tunes.

Enjoy!

Music Review: Rock 'n' roll stalwart Waddy Wachtel takes center stage

Guitarist Waddy Wachtel has been a soloist for the likes of Stevie Nicks and Keith Richards. He brings his jam session residency to the Pickwick Bowl in Burbank on Saturday, March 5. (Photo by Steve Appleford)
Jonny Whiteside

The rock star is perhaps the most alluring figure in our pop culture. A strutting embodiment of passionate emotion, each is nonetheless completely reliant on a critical sidekick, the musical soloist upon whom they rely to elevate and complete every song. Few fulfill the role with as much sustained mastery as Waddy Wachtel, the guitarist at the center of so many major rock 'n' roll constellations — with Rolling Stone Keith Richards, Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Knicks, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, the late Warren Zevon — that he ranks as a sideman without peer.

Wachtel, who appears Saturday, March 5, at Pickwick Gardens, has been featured on so many hit records that he makes it seem almost effortless, but it's a responsibility he takes very seriously.

"It is quite a feat to write a great song and it is quite a feat to make a great record of it," Wachtel said. "For me it's all about counterpoint, providing something to catch your ear within this song, between where the great singing leaves off. So, my thing is honoring songs. It's always all about the song."

The 69-year-old musician's vast list of credits spans rock, pop and country, and he is constantly expanding it, working regularly as one of the most in-demand studio players in the business.

There's no retiring in this business, you just keep going ... If you can still play, you play. I'm too old to be doing this, but I still do it. Ferociously.

"I am still definitely playing sessions all the time," he said. "I just did a great rock 'n' roll tune with Sheryl Crow. Next week I'm recording with LeAnn Rimes. There's always lots to do. The sessions are very important."

The Wachtel saga is a colorful and apparently fated one, which he recounts in a swift, loping style. "I grew up in Jackson Heights, New York, started playing guitar when I was about nine, moved to L.A. at 20 in '68," Wachtel said. "I came out here with a band, and, right off, I met David Crosby, who let me know that I 'was the only guy in the band.' I said 'Oh no, don't tell me that.' The band was pretty good, great singers, but it was going nowhere, mostly due to lousy management. So I disbanded it and by 1970 I had my first gig, with the Everly Brothers.

"I started meeting all these session players and I thought 'Hey, I'm as good as these guys.' Well, not all of them, because some of these session guys were just amazing musicians, but I thought 'I can do that.' And I met Nick Venet, who had produced the first albums by the Beach Boys and Linda Ronstadt and he liked me a lot, so I started getting more studio jobs. Then I met [famed producer] David Foster, and he also liked what I was doing and he introduced me to [manager-record executive] Lou Adler, and we were just working like crazy from then on."

"I have been very lucky. It's been an incredible ride, Los Angeles was just such an open, creative place then, it was an amazing time to be here. I was playing with Linda Ronstadt and then James Taylor, I met Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, played on their album around 1980 and we've been together ever since. And that's when I met Keith Richards, and we immediately hit it off. The next thing I know I get this message: 'Call Keith. He's looking for you,' and so I get him on the phone and he said 'I'm putting a band together and you are in it.' Well, what can you say but 'OK!' And that was the X-pensive Winos."

Always more often in the studio than out on the road, Wachtel eventually developed an enduringly popular club gig, his famed Big Monday at Los Angeles club the Joint. "About 15 ago, [singer-songwriter] Jack Tempchin decided he wanted to start playing live, so we put together a band, Terry Reid was in it, Bernard Fowler, Blondie Chaplin, Rick Rosas and we were playing every week, and we found that whenever we did a rock tune the audience reaction was incredible. They went wild. So we gradually stopped playing so many originals and we turned into the best rock cover band in the world. We were there for years, and so many great guests would come in. We had everybody: Robert Plant, Keith Richards, Bobby Womack, Neil Young — he got up one night and did 45 minutes with us."

The club eventually closed and Big Mondays evaporated, but now Wachtel intends resurrect the night.

"So now, at Pickwick, we want to keep it going, and whenever everybody's in town, they will come down and we'll do it," Wachtel said. "Unfortunately, Rick is no longer with us, and Bernard is out with the Stones but Blondie Chaplin will be at this Pickwick show. It's an amazing lineup of great musicians: Phil Jones, Jamie Savko, Keith Allison, Brett Tuggle, Al Ortiz, Danny Kortchmar. It's always an overpoweringly rock 'n' roll event — we do 'em strong and true. It's a lot of fun and a lot of work. People always say 'Oh, you do such great jams' and I tell 'em this is no jam. We work very hard to sound this loose!"

"There's no retiring in this business, you just keep going. I mean, the Stones all thought that band would only last four or five years. Nobody thought rock 'n' roll would last. If you can still play, you play. I'm too old to be doing this, but I still do it. Ferociously."

It's interesting that he says "this is no jam. We work very hard to sound this loose." Well, that's great, but what's wrong with an unimprovised jam now and then?

I did not realize Waddy's age. I would have guessed he was 5 years younger.

That reminds me of yesterday when they said Yoko Ono was in the hospital, I couldn't believe she was 83. I had forgotten that she was older than Lennon.

John D'Anna, The Republic | azcentral.com 4:24 p.m. MST March 6, 2016

Nancy Reagan was my first big “get” in journalism. I’d interviewed Stevie Nicks, briefly, for my college paper at an American Heart Association event she was headlining on behalf of her father, but she was pretty dismissive and wasn’t much interested in being there, much less talking to a student.

My brush with the first lady was at a similar kind of event, in Mesa in the summer of 1983. I was the weekend reporter and was assigned to cover a Marc Center dinner at the Dobson Ranch Inn, where Reagan was to be the keynote speaker and accept an award on behalf of her mother.

From an interview with Terry Manning:

"When I was in junior high school, the girl in front of me in homeroom was really, really cute. I mean I really had a crush on her. Probably my first real crush. But I didn’t know how to deal with girls, and to be honest still don’t. So I’d poke at her, or pull her pigtail if she had one, or whatever. Just stuff. You know, thinking maybe she’ll notice me. One day she’d had enough. Couldn’t stand any more of me being a pestering little idiot, I guess. So she leaned around, took her pencil and jammed it right into my leg. Right into my right knee. And a piece of lead that broke off in there. I still see it every day, right under the skin.... Now here’s the thing. The girl got in a band later too and changed her name from Stephanie to Stevie Nicks"

Later he worked with her on Rick Vito's solo album, but he didn't talk to her about it. There's a little more to the story. Definitely worth a read:

Oh, wow. A great story and one we haven't seen before. He should take pictures of his leg!

And then she ended up being his first date? Michele

this isn't directly about Stevie herself but Torrey DeVitto is one of her god-daughters (and daughter of Mary Torrey). She's apparently a model? and is in a PETA campaign.

She also stars on Chicago Med.

Concord has a small room [at The Village studio] that they permanently own. Everyday there were really well-known artists coming in. Stevie Nicks stopped by to do some vocals for something. Busta Rhymes, Ben Harper, Ziggy Marley, the Griswolds; when Snoop Dogg was there, they had to get fans and air out the whole building for, like, a day. [Laughs.] The staff was so cool and supportive. I got a lot of stuff done there. At some point they had somebody else [booked for my spot].

The Village Studio? Was Stevie possibly laying down vocals for the Mac album?

She was probably there for the "Southern Accents" vocal...Southern Accents The Ledge (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?p=1178646)

I was coming out of my gym tonight and there's a bar there. As I walked up the stairs Rooms On Fire was blasting out of the speakers as they were doing a music quiz. I thought I was imagining it because you don't hear Stevie's solo work very often at all. I so wanted to run in and shout "It's Stevie Nicks!!!"
