I just saw this on the Bob Welch website. Bob makes the following announcement. It sounds great! I'll be "there" for sure.
On July 16th, '08, at 7PM Pacific, I'm going to be doing a special Internet concert via Second Life . As part of the grand opening concert for Gibson Island, the official Second Life presence of Gibson Guitar Corp , I'm going to perform some live acoustic songs in the virtual world with an avatar they are making to look like me, with the name "BobWelch Magic " , and my avatar will be holding a cool Gibson acoustic guitar, while I perform live on one of the stages on the island. I'm doing this show from the real life home of avatar Von Johin www.vonjohin.com and we'll be joined by another avatar musician, Cypress Rosewood www.cypressrosewood.com .
Second Life is free to join, so if you want to get into the concert, go to www.secondlife.com, and join it, then make your way to Gibson Island at 7PM SL Time (which is the same as Pacific time), and grab a seat for this free show. If you can't get into Second Life for the show , you can stream it using WinAmp or iTunes software by opening the URL: http://www.vonjohin.com:8888.

Cool! Thanks for the info, I hope a techie here can save the stream as an mpeg so we can burn it to a DVD and watch it on our standalone DVD players? :)

Nashville-based Gibson Guitar said it will launch on Wednesday virtual world Gibson Island on online community Second Life, allowing consumers to experience virtual Gibson guitars for free.
Gibson said it will become the first major music manufacturer to have its own island on Second Life. The island will feature theatres with musical performances by celebrity musicians, radio broadcasts of Gibson artists and a chance to customize virtual Gibson guitars, among other options.
On Wednesday, former Fleetwood Mac vocalist and guitarist Bob Welch will perform in a concert with other Second Life musicians on Gibson Island.

What a great idea - to bring Gibson Guitars in-world and set up a few stages for performances! Bob Welch is playing to a sim filled with 110 avatars, and the crowd is doing it’s thing in true SL style…offering feedback and chatting with the performers like you just can’t do in RL. Some nice Fleetwood Mac anecdotes are a-flowing…the guys clearly are having a great time.

From the left: Bobwelch Magic (Bob Welch) Team Gibson’s Von Johin and Team Gibson’s Cypress Rosewood (who is an impressive inworld ambient performer in his own right!). Fun show!

Viv...Thanks for posting that link...I went over to Von Johins house yesterday (7/16/) about 4pm....We all set up ( me, Von, and Cypress Rose) soundchecked...then had pizza until Cypress's set began. I played maracas and guiro on Von Johins set, and then when I went on.......it's all a blur, but it was very fun, relaxed......like playing in a club. Von has a huge upstairs studio, and he was projecting the 2nd life action onto a flat screen , so we could see comments etc..
We all predict that, maybe even less than 10 years from now, it'll be full blown 3d holographic real-time interactive performances...Quantum computers running in parallel will have the muscle to do this.
All in all, it was great fun ! Von Johin and I go back a long way...he set up the 1st "online interactive interview and midi guitar lesson" with me in '92, on "Compuserve" (remember them ? ;-) using a 386 processor and a 2400 baud modem ! ;-) We've come a long way since then ...
Best,
Bob Welch

Dear Bob, Let me just say that it is a great honor on my part to post something that brings you great joy. How sweet of you to thank me in a public way. I wish I could find more articles about you on the internet because if I did, I certainly would be thrilled to post them here. I think it's totally effin' cool that you are a member of The Ledge!
In all honesty where your music is concerned I only know your hit songs. Sentimental Lady, Ebony Eyes and Hypnotized. All fantastic songs. I had never heard of Fleetwood Mac until 1975 but here in Massachusetts and Connecticut your song Hypnotized got a lot of heavy radio airplay between 1976 and 1982 on our album rock radio stations, as well as the other two songs I mentioned.
The performance you did at Cal Jam 2 with Stevie has been a part of my video collection for many, many years. How I would love to know what that must've felt like to look out at an audience of 250,000 people. God certainly has blessed you.
To many people around the globe you are a household name. You certainly made your mark in Rock-n-Roll history and in the great history of Fleetwood Mac.
There are over 1,000 members on The Ledge and although many of them are simply lurkers and few of them are commentators I just want you to know that many a fan of Fleetwood Mac appreciate you and your musical legacy and many a fan of this Band has expressed the desire for you to perform with them again, especially on their final farewell tour.
Lots of love and respect, VivFox(Mark)

Dome,
I can recommend three or four albums to start with. Begin with Then Play On, which bridges Fleetwood Mac's transition from straight-ahead blues to more pop and rock-orientated efforts. If you like what you hear then try Bare Trees, which is an early 1970s post-Peter Green album that spotlights Christine McVie and newcomer Bob Welch.
You might also try Pious Bird of Good Omen, which showcases the original band playing great covers of Elmore James, Robert Johnson, and others, and features the original version of "Black Magic Woman." It also includes "Albatross," which IMO is completely different from anything else they did. It's a gorgeous tune, and according to legend served as the inspiration for Lennon's ode to Peter Green, "Sun King."
Finally, you might want to check out Live at the BBC. It contains both covers and originals of blues tunes, but also includes contemporary (i.e., ca. 1967-1970) rock and pop songs, lively but sloppy covers of 1950s rockabilly and doo-wop that will probably drive some crazy, and Jeremy Spencer's dead-on imitations of Elvis and Buddy. Great fun if you're in the mood and approach it the right way (not too seriously). The album concludes with "Man of the World," which gives a harrowing description of Peter Green's mental condition but is a terrific song nonetheless.

Hey Bob..
I have to second Viv's post here, and couldn't agree more!! I'd SOOOO love it if someome from FM's camp contacted you and possibly Peter Green to join them on their farewell tour! How wonderful would that be?? My boyfriend and I were listening to some of your music last night on YouTube, from 1969 BBC Sessions, which was mind-blowing! I SOOOOO loved hearing you! And of course, I LOVE Ebony Eyes!! What a GREAT song!
Warm regards,
Arlene

First major music manufacturer to establish itself within the virtual world
Gibson Guitar has announced the launch of Gibson Island on Second Life.com and has become the first major music manufacturer to establish an official home within the virtual world. The island was launched on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, with an exclusive live music performance by Bob Welch.
Second Life is a 3-D Virtual world entirely created by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown to host over 14 million inhabitants from around the globe. Visitors discover a vast digital continent, teaming with people in entertainment, other experiences and new opportunities. Millions of users launched Second Life five years ago along with Linden Labs and some of the world's greatest musicians have already created their own avatars to explore the virtual capacity of Second Life. The virtual world is free to join and available for Mac, Windows and Linux computer platforms.
In tribute to the Gibson Les Paul guitar and musician, the Gibson Island is in the shape of the famous guitar body and rises up from the ocean in Second Life. The island will feature humbucker mountains, full theatres, mini-theatres and other areas resembling pickups and other aspects of a Gibson guitar.
As part of the launch, the 70s multi-platinum solo artist and former Fleetwood Mac vocalist/guitarist will perform in an exclusive concert with other Second Life musicians. Bob Welch's avatar, Bob Welch Magic, will also appear on stage along with celebrity musicians Cypress Rosewood and Von Johin. The concert kicks off a series of concerts, which will be produced and performed only on the Gibson Island in Second Life over the period of a few months. Wednesday's inaugural concert series is a first for the musical instrument manufacturing industry and features an entire day of exclusive performances on the Gibson Island.
The Gibson Island features various stages including mini-theatres featuring classic blues performances by Matt Murphy, Howlin' Wolf and more.
A variety of movie screens scattered around the island provides exclusive audio content and experiences along with news and information sites.
Second Life residents will have the opportunity to experience some of the world's most popular Gibson guitars for free. Over two-dozen high prim virtual Gibson models will be available throughout the Gibson Island only, allowing Second Life residents to own their dream guitar in this virtual world. The models will include Gibson's Hound Dog Dobro Acoustic, Hummingbird Acoustic, Flying V, Slash Inspired By Les Paul, John Lennon Signature Les Paul, Les Paul Robot, SG Diablo, and Les Paul Classic models, among many others
Second Life Gibson avatars will have exclusive opportunities to own Gibson Gear, apparel and accessories virtually. Gibson Entertainment will provide exclusive produced videos and audio programming which will play on the movie screens throughout the 65,000 sq foot virtual island including celebrity interviews, music lessons, fun facts, company history, documentaries and performances. Visitors will be able to explore the island's many areas on the Gibson Tour Trolley or simply fly or teleport through each location.
Features of the Gibson Island will include the Gibson Forest, where visitors can walk the path and learn about the woods that make Gibson guitars, Gibson Radio, playing music from Gibson artists along with live interviews, Gibson Rock and Roll Stage – a full sized concert stage for musical performances, the Gibson Custom Guitar Shop, Gibson guitar of the month boardwalk and much more.

Wow. This Second Life world is really creating a stir if Gibson is getting involved. How do the gigs work exactly? Are they filmed prior to it in some club?

A great example of old and new media coming together. Gibson seems particularly switched on to this kind of thing (eg Guitar Hero) - hopefully other guitar brands will follow suit.

Performances are NOT pre-taped....or edited....They're streamed live....People in different parts of the planet can play together...There is a slight lag...like on a cellphone long-distance...but the software compensates for it.
BTW; I know some folks who are making over 1000$ a month (real American dollars, translated from "Lindens") by playing 2nd life shows. The audience "tips " the performer, who has a "tip jar", like in a real nightclub...these tips, which are initially in "Lindens" (2nd Life money) can be paid out every month by Paypal as REAL money.
So.......it's no "goof"....this could be (one of the ) the future of live performing as travel and gas and parking prices escalate.
BTW; 2nd Life is not compensating me in anyway to comment favorably on them.
Best,
Bob Welch (missus;-)
