Sheryl Crow to Join Fleetwood Mac

Move over Stevie: Sheryl Crow is planning to join Fleetwood Mac.
"We definitely have plans for collaborating in the future, and we'll see what happens," Crow tells Spinner. As to when fans might hear those collaborations, she says, "I think that's going to be next year."

And what songs would she ideally like to perform onstage with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham? "I'd love to do 'The Chain' and 'Second Hand News,'" she says. "There's so many great songs that I absolutely love, and just to get to sing harmonies on them is going to be a thrill."

For Crow, who is just beginning to tour in support of her recently released 'Detours' album, the opportunity to join the legendary group (and fill the shoes of Christine McVie, who retired from touring in 1998), is a chance to work with her close friend Nicks. Perhaps more important, it will help keep the band alive, as Nicks had previously gone on record as saying she was unwilling to carry on Fleetwood Mac without McVie, who had been one of the constants of the often-evolving group since she joined in the early '70s.

According to Crow, Nicks has been a major influence in her life as an artist. "I love people that are not jaded or de-sensitized and that are still really into what they're doing and into growing as an artist, and that's her," Crow says. "She'd walk out and stand at the microphone, and I swear I was looking at a 20-year-old, because she just exudes this kind of sensual love for music."

Sheryl Crow's AOL Sessions performance, during which she broke the Fleetwood Mac news, will premiere April 11.

Sheryl Crow says she'll soon be singing with Fleetwood Mac, a move sure to give new life to the classic rock band, which hasn't toured in several years.

"I don't want to make any official announcements, but I will say that we definitely have plans for collaborating in the future, and we'll see what happens," Crow told the AOL music Web site Spinner.com in a story posted Thursday.

The 46-year-old singer didn't give a date, but said it could happen next year.

She's already thinking about what she'd like to perform. "I'd love to do `The Chain,' I'd love to do `Second Hand News,'" Crow said.

Crow said she looked forward to working with friend Stevie Nicks.

"I think the person I learned the most hands-on from is Stevie Nicks because she allowed me not only to co-write with her but also to produce her, and she's a true artist," she said.

Crow would give the band and Nicks a boost. According to Spinner.com, Nicks had said she wouldn't continue with Fleetwood Mac without keyboardist Christine McVie, who retired from touring in 1998. McVie joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 shortly after marrying the band's bass guitarist, John McVie.

Fleetwood Mac last toured in 2004.

Crow is currently touring after the release of her latest album, "Detours."

Phone and e-mail messages left with representatives for Fleetwood Mac and Crow were not immediately returned.

Deja Vu or do I recall this same rumour just before the SYW tour...

michelej1

Well, it was a rumor at the time of SYW, but none of the principles ever discussed it like this. This seems like something a lot more concrete than 2003.

Chili mentioned it a few days ago and now this . . .

I'm sure this is exactly what Mick was talking about earlier as being very exciting news about FM. Even during the UTS tour, Lindsey mentioned that they might double bill with someone. And now, I wonder if it was Stevie's plan all along as well. When she said she didn't like touring without Christine, she knew that Christine would never tour again, so was she only saying that to lay the groundwork for Sheryl and make Lindsey accept the idea that he had to agree that Sheryl would join the band, if he wanted to tour at all?

You know, I was hoping that some members of the band would gang up on the others, but this is not exactly what I had planned. I wanted the 3 guys to go to England and . . . I'm not happy with the shift of balance and leveraging power Sheryl's presence will cause in band interactions.

Still, in one sense this is good news because it increases the chance that we definitely WILL see FM next year. I do dread having to merge Crow's songs into the FM setlist. Let her come on first, sing her stuff and then return to the stage with FM and sing ONLY FM songs.

I always laughed at that old interview where Stevie said that John and Mick loved Sheryl and added that Lindsey really liked her a lot too. It just seemed amusing to me that she did make the distinction between Lindsey liking her and the others LOVING her.

Boy, this idea has me both excited happy and excited distressed at the same time.

What are the odds that we can get some new music if Sheryl is in the mix? Sheryl is not at the stage where she wants to sit around and play 30 year old songs for two hours, so maybe her presence there will force a new album or at least 3 new songs (one from each songwriter). In that sense, Lindsey will have won a little too.

Wow, if this happens, Sheryl's inclusion would bring a shift of balance that I really feel disadvantages my team in the end, but better this than no FM at all.

So much to ponder.

My first reaction was to glance at my calendar to make sure it's not April Fools' Day yet.

I definitely think that Sheryl's inclusion has much to do with Stevie wanting another female around.

I like Sheryl. My first hesitation about her joining is the backlog of songs & its effect on shows. Stevie & Lindsey have added their solo songs into the Mac set; I suspect that Sheryl will want to add at least one of hers in as well. And as a result, great old Mac songs will never see the light of a concert setting.
My other hesitation is that the press/reviewers are usually kinder to Sheryl than to the Mac, & I expect they'll broadcast that Sheryl is the savior of a dinosaur band, breathing new life into old careers. If the press will be fair & treat Sheryl as merely one more talent in a band that has had a great number of talents going back to 1967, then I'll be happy.

On the bright side, we know from TISL that Sheryl has encouraged Stevie to revisit some of her old unreleased stuff, so maybe there's hope for some of our favorites. And if they do work together on new stuff, I'm hopeful yet again; I love "You're Not the One".

This is intriging! Could be exciting....I really like Sheryl alot, and do love what she's done with Stevie...But I REALLY don't want to see FM become her backing band...But I'm there...I sort of hope they put out a new cd following the old format of a couple of songs each before they tour, but I doubt that will happen...but fears aside, I'm there...

Well, so far it just says that they will probably be collaborating. That could mean a lot of things. I don't take it to mean she will be joining Fleetwood Mac any more than Stevie joined the Heartbreakers a couple of years ago. She'll probably co headline a tour and come on stage for a few songs or something. I doubt that she'll become a full fledged member of the band, but who knows.

Stevie: "Sheryl's just our friend, you know. Really, if Sheryl hadn't been our friend she would never have played on this record. She got to come in and play some keyboards because we love her and she's a sweetheart. And you know, who knows... if she shows up at the back door at one or our shows... "Lindsey, pleeeease, can I just come up and stand on the stage?"... he might let her."

Personally I think this news is crap.

Yes, after I responded, this occurred to me as the likeliest scenario. I'd be more excited if I knew that there would be a new album with songs divided between Sheryl, Stevie, & Lindsey. Having Sheryl onstage just to do Rumours songs is not worth my money - that ship of thrills sailed after she did GDW with Stevie at Central Park. That she is talking about "The Chain" and "Secondhand News" suggests more of the same.

I'm not sure that I share the excitement. I like Sheryl Crow doing her thing, and I like Fleetwood Mac doing their thing. I really don't want the two things combined. I mean, it is going to change the whole dynamics of the band! The sound might even be different. Is the Mac going to be singing Sheryl Crow songs? I have a lot of questions. I'm sure this is related to the hub-bub that Stevie wasn't going to tour without Christine. Well, this isn't Christine. It is another female, but it isn't Christine. I hope that the band has thought this through.

I need a little more info on all this. When I first saw the headline on my Netscape homepage I immediately thought, "Stevie's out and Sheryl's taking her place...That's NOT going to work...so that's what Mick was hinting at?" So, I guess I was a little off but still need more details.

I had to read the story over again...it says they "have plans for collaborating in the future." I don't know. Collaborating says to me that she isn't joining as a full time member and that it's more along the lines of her involvement with Stevie for the TISL album/tour.

i completely agree with you, i don't think she's "The new member"
But i do think she would tour with them, you know Co-headlining and sing harmonies with them. That would be ok,

I had to read the story over again...it says they "have plans for collaborating in the future." I don't know. It's way too vague. I think her or anyone else joining the band as a permanent musician/singer is out of the question. I just don't see that happening. I think this is more along the lines of what happened with TISL.

Gosh... I am buzzing over this news. In fact, I think it's the most exciting thing to happen in the FM family since the release of Say You Will. This is so shocking and unexpected as much as it seems like it has been foreshadowed and seems inevitable. Considering that Stevie and Sheryl have not exactly been BFFs publicly as of late, this is especially shocking. Oh, the possibilities are just infinite!!!

The reasons why this makes sense:

-The obvious Stevie-Sheryl girl power connection.

-Lindsey's respect and admiration for Sheryl and their common love of quirky studio trickery.

-Sheryl played keyboards on the SYW, which also features a song written about Sheryl.

-Sheryl fans tend to be FM fans and vice versa.

-Sheryl has matured into a veteran musician with legit singing, songwriting and performing chops.

-Sheryl's innate musical style is very similar to FM. Listen to "It Don't Hurt" and tell me it was not influenced by "The Chain."

The wonderful possibilities:

-Perhaps Sheryl's multi-faceted talents as a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and singer will help to pare down the "Fleetwood Mac Orchestra" live lineup we've been seeing since 1987. Perhaps it won't be necessary for Carlos Rios or Jana to be in this lineup (one hopes)!!

-Sheryl and Stevie dueting on "Strong Enough."

-Inspiring the band to enter the studio and hopefully bringing keyboards back into the mix.

-Sheryl ALWAYS changes up her setlist. Perhaps some of that will rub off on FM.

-Sheryl may be able to revive some really obscure nuggets from the FM catalog, especially from the early 70's, like the way Rick Vito revived "Another Woman." Her take would be so different that she could pull it off without sounding like she is trying to do an imitation.

-I can't wait to see the five of them together at the inevitable press conference!

What could go wrong:

-Sheryl had better keep a low profile ala Christine. There is only room for ONE diva in FM. This means man-tailored suit jackets and jeans ONLY.

-Sheryl's voice is not as warm and full as Christine's, which will totally change the sound of the harmonies.

-Sheryl should sing no more than two solo songs. Ironically, I think "A Change Would Do You Good" would be perfect (and apt) for FM. "Strong Enough" should be the other.

-Sheryl should be allowed to sing only one Christine song besides "Don't Stop," which Lindsey sings mostly anyway. "You Make Loving Fun" would be it. Any more Christine songs would just magnify her absence.

-Sheryl has got a very large vocal range compared to Stevie, so she'd better keep the mellisma in check.

I am really, really, really excited about this. This news just made my whole week! :blob1: :blob2:

I think any new breath that is breathed into FM at this point is welcome

I think SC plays the piano, bass, and lead guitars. So, she and LB could jam together, though he appears not to share the sandbox very well.

Another point is she is a star in her own right and does not need to do this and vice versa. So, it must be being done for artistic sake, which IMO will lead to a different and hopefully good sound.

Since when is collaborating with a band the same thing as joining it? Several artists collaborate with oneanother, but that does not necessarily mean there is any "joining" involved...

On another note, if this is true, I will totally be done with Fleetwood Mac. Because Sheryl Crow sucks :)

I read in an article somewhere recently that Sheryl now believes that she has reached the point in her career (i.e., she's gotten over the hill) where she is not under as much pressure to crank out hit records. As such, she is probably now going to take some time to rest on her laurels and just have some fun. Sheryl lurves performing live and playing music just for the sake of doing it, whether it is her own stuff or a bunch of covers. And considering she grew up idolizing FM, this must be pure heaven for her.

But then again, I'm sure the new baby is creating quite the incentive to go out there and rake in boatloads of cash. College ain't getting cheaper, you know.

I am pretty sure SC has loads of cash as she does not seem to live any kind of opulent lifestyle. In fact. didn't Stevie say that SC had a tiny place in NYC. Granted, that likely was still a million dollars  -- but someone of her stature could easily afford this Brobdingnagian nest (which I want BTW) -

Turn Of The Century Grandeur

Also, I think SC, like most artists realize money is made only on the road now. I mean she may sell a million records, but that hardly matches a 20 city tour at $50,000+ a show plus the merch. rev.

Personally, I don't want to hear any Sheryl solo stuff in FM's set. It's bad enough to hear Stevie and Lindsey's solo stuff in a FM setting. Sorry, but I've felt this way since the Tango era when they started it. And I'm like this with every band that has front people as soloists. You go to their solo concerts to hear the solo stuff. Especially with a band like FM that has a lot of stuff in their catalog that never sees the light of day. When they include a solo song, it takes the place of a band song that might not otherwise be performed....

I think she moved to Nashville a few years ago. I don't even think one could even find a 3 million dollar house in Nashville!

There's no doubt that she has made tons of money between recordings (for which she receives producer royalties as well as publishing and performing) and the road. But she stands to make a lot more money with FM.

I know it's off topic, but did you hear about the looming foreclosure of Aretha Franklin's mansion in Detroit due to $19K worth of outstanding property taxes? The house is supposedly worth $700K, which... to be honest, doesn't seem like a lot of money for a star of Ms. Franklin's stature. I mean, WTF? That might get you an older handyman special one bedroom coop in NYC. If you're lucky. I know she probably got screwed over by Motown, and she hasn't received much in the way of publishing, but she has cranked out a ton of hit records over the decades. But then again, she doesn't tour very much due to her refusal to fly (not that she would exactly fit in one of the seats these days  ). I dunno... it just seems odd that I am a complete nobody and my house is worth more than the Queen of Soul's...

She chalked it up to an oversight by her lawyers and/or the people who run her stuff for her. Though I think she had some tax troubles years ago and artists of that era were screwed out of lots of the royalties, Aunti Re Re still makes lots of cash - in fact, she usually insists that something like 1/2 ofher fee is pain in actual cash  She says she is going to pay it - so we'll see. But, yes, if she can't afford $19,000 or be able to get that though a mortgage or a one off gig - then she is trouble. Detroit, though leads or in in top few cities in the country in foreclosures. So, it could be possible. I mean $700,000 for a "mansion" is not that much in any city

I am a huge fan of Sheryl's, but the jury is still out on my opinion of this. I wish that she would produce a new FM album, adding her own backing vocals here and there. I can't say I'm crazy about the way SYW turned out, and I think an outside producer could have made all the difference in making SYW have more continuity than what it ended up being (sounds like two solo albums badly spliced together). I think Sheryl is a great producer, very much in line with FM's style: quirky and somewhat groundbreaking, but pop friendly too. Looks like she's just going to be joining the band for another tour though. Perhaps she'll encourage the band to bring out some oldies like Sisters Of The Moon, or more obscure songs like Storms or something. Perhaps she can help them freshen up their sound on road worn classics. I guess in the end I don't think this is a bad thing, but unless a new album is involved, I can't say it's a great earth shattering thing either.

Having Sheryl onstage just to do Rumours songs is not worth my money - that ship of thrills sailed after she did GDW with Stevie at Central Park.

That STILL is my favorite version of GDW with Stevie singing. (the 1994/95 tour with Bekka is my favorite Fleetwood Mac version)

I mean, it is going to change the whole dynamics of the band!

You say that like it's a BAD thing. At this stage, Fleetwood Mac's dynamic NEEDS changing. It's about f-ing time the dynamic changed, even in a small way. They're whole history has been about constant dynamic changes. When Christine joined after Peter Green left; when Bob Welch joined after Jeremy flew the coop; when Stevie & Lindsey joined when Welch burned out; even the Time crew shook the cage (I enjoyed them immensely but I'm obviously in the minority)

What's the big deal? Even without Sheryl, they didn't drag out any "gems" from the vaults...just Rumours, white album, a couple of Tusk & Mirage tunes...and the mandatory 4 or 5 songs from their most current album which won't see light of the set list on any subsequent tours. Having Sheryl in there will most likely shake up the set list (THANK GOD!)...and that can't be a bad thing.

Hell, the Eagles play their group hits AND their solo hits...since 1997, Fleetwood Mac seems to want to immitate whatever the Eagles do, so why not add MORE solo tunes to their set. Maybe they'll FINALLY drop a long-past-its-prime Rumours tune or two. Which also wouldn't be a bad idea.

Sheryl Crow is nothing more then someone that can't help to thrust herself in the spotlight at someone else's expense and talent. Years ago you saw her pop up at every music benifit there was. Not doing her own set but she has put herself onstage with everyone from the allman brothers band to the rolling stones. I love stevie but think about how much
different tisl would have sounded if sheryl crow's ''influince'' was not all over it. Now she is
''joining'' fleetwood mac? no no no she is ''jock sniffing'' fleetwood mac. Mick and john please
don't let this happen. I really don't want the final chapter of this great band written this way. the band don't deserve it..the fans don't deserve it..and history don't deserve it
I can see the set meeting already

I have a REAL problem with this. I love Sheryl Crow, I love Fleetwood Mac, but together?? Woah! I think that's just taking it a little too far. It almost feels like Fleetwood Mac is selling out. No doubt this is Mick's doing, he's probably in debt again...let's see it's been three years since the Say You Will tour...yea, that's enough time for Mick to spend all his money and be bankrupt.

Please, Lord, don't let this Fleetwood Mac/Sheryl Crow thing happen! Fleetwood Mac is NOT Fleetwood Mac without Mick, John, CHRISTINE, Lindsey and Stevie performing together. Take one of em out and replace em with someone else and they'll suck.

I'm glad they chose someone 'young'. Christ, who was next on their list to ask, Lulu?!

The exciting/non-safe route to take would be inviting someone in their 20's to join. Maybe a boy and girl singing/songwriting act in their mid-to-late 20's, for example.

I'm not gonna worry about it cos I'll believe it when I see it.

This means nothing to me until I actually see it happen. I'll reserve my judgement until that point, because I honestly don't care about Sheryl Crow one way or the other, and I just can't imagine Lindsey actually being okay with this. Touring on the same bill, perhaps joining for a couple of songs is one thing.. but I don't want to hear a new FM album with her on it (more than she was on SYW). ugh.. a whole disc full of Silver Girl type songs.. no. thanks.

I will go see FM when they tour again. If Sheryl's there doing some of her songs, fine, whatever. It just gives me a chance to break away to get more drinks without missing Lindsey's stuff. Really, I just wish Lindsey would quit and do his solo stuff for forever but that is quite obviously not going to happen. I'll go see him no matter who he plays with, but it would be nice to have another solo tour. :(

[This description in the Australian press gave me hope that we might see new studio material:]

The All I Wanna Do star and the veteran band are struggling to find a gap in their busy schedules to meet up in a recording studio - but she insists they "definitely have plans for collaborating in the future".

-Lindsey's respect and admiration for Sheryl and their common love of quirky studio trickery.Lindsey has spoken publicly about Sheryl? What did he say?

-Sheryl played keyboards on the SYW, which also features a song written about Sheryl.Yes, but everybody played keyboards on SYW, even John.

-Sheryl fans tend to be FM fans and vice versa.True, these days.

-Perhaps Sheryl's multi-faceted talents as a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and singer will help to pare down the "Fleetwood Mac Orchestra" live lineup we've been seeing since 1987. Perhaps it won't be necessary for Carlos Rios or Jana to be in this lineup (one hopes)!!I don't think the band -- as long as Buckingham or Nicks is in it -- would ever go out without the backups. They LOVE their backups.

-Inspiring the band to enter the studio and hopefully bringing keyboards back into the mix.Whuh? There are lots of keyboards on SYW -- probably more than any other Mac album (where Lindsey often used guitars to mimic boards).

-I can't wait to see the five of them together at the inevitable press conference! That would be cool!

-Sheryl's voice is not as warm and full as Christine's, which will totally change the sound of the harmonies.I don't think it will "totally" change, not with SharonMindyJanaEtc. still there singing. Sheryl even sort of sounds like a backup singer -- same timbre. She also very efficiently goes into backup singer mode. Witness her appearances with Stevie on her Troubled tour.

I cannot begin to tell you how much this whole notion angers me. I find it absolutely disgusting that there is even the thought of Sheryl Crow being added as a member of Fleetwood Mac. Go through the history of the band and you'll find that almost every member was added to the band based on intuition and instinct. Adding Crow would be the equivilent of selling out in my view. I hope this isn't true.

Yes, but everybody played keyboards on SYW, even John.

Oh, I believe it was from an article written around the time of SYW... or TISL... something like that. It's not fun getting old. Irregardless, it is very, very unusual to have guests appearing on a FM album, so the fact that she was invited in to play keyboards is quite an honor and a testament to Sheryl's insider status with the band.

I don't think the band -- as long as Buckingham or Nicks is in it -- would ever go out without the backups. They LOVE their backups.

If you think about it, Sheryl Crow is the ultimate backup. She does it all, except for percussion.

Whuh? There are lots of keyboards on SYW -- probably more than any other Mac album (where Lindsey often used guitars to mimic boards).

I couldn't disagree with you more. SYW had lots of synthesizer-like sounds that were created via guitar pedals and effects. It was an album that was completely dominated by the guitar in which a few keyboard parts were added here and there to accentuate or fill out the sound. There isn't a single song on the album that was built around a keyboard part ala practically every Christine song. For me, the essence of the FM sound has always been around Christine's playing, so SYW was unsatisfying for me in that respect. I think Sheryl would bring back that bluesy heavy electric piano sound that has been sorely missing as of late.

I don't think it will "totally" change, not with SharonMindyJanaEtc. still there singing. Sheryl even sort of sounds like a backup singer -- same timbre. She also very efficiently goes into backup singer mode. Witness her appearances with Stevie on her Troubled tour.

It has already changed with Christine's departure. But, in a way, one could argue that Sharon and Christine both have a similar tone to their voice- that soft, full, husky sound, whereas Stevie and Sheryl both have a reedy, girly quality to their voices. If Sheryl takes over the parts traditionally sung by Sharon/Christine, it's definitely going to sound different. In fact, at times it could sound like Stevie is harmonizing with herself, like she does on her studio recordings.

And what makes you think this wasn't an act of "intuition and instinct?" It isn't like Mick picked her name out of a hat. One could argue that this has been in the works for a very long time vis a vis TISL, SYW. If they were really selling out, Mick would have been pursuing Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch or maybe even Colbie Caillat, which wouldn't have been that much of a stretch considering her familial ties to FM. Considering it looked like Mick had to choose between adding another chick to the band or losing Stevie altogether, I think this move was a no-brainer.

I'm just glad it wasn't Vanessa Carlton that was asked to join! :sorry:

Sheryl could bring a lot to any band: she can play, sing and write; additionally, she can produce, and she's a solid musician. Her biography says she's got a degree in music, her strong suit is the piano (like Christine). She's got a large following and can help fill up seats, which could be a plus so that FM doesn't come off as merely a nostalgia act. Sheryl can be spontaneous (unlike the current members of Fleetwood Mac) and perform just about anything on cue. Maybe she will loosen things up with the band, particularly in the set list. There's plenty of time for all of this to fall into place, if it is really going to happen. Interestingly, there's no news from Fleetwood Mac on any of this. Sheryl's got her own album to promote, and unlike Stevie, she's not "always on call." Lindsey's got an album to get out. Stevie's got her own thing going on this summer.

If it were an act of intuition and instinct, he'd be giving someone who's not that well known an opportunity. Sheryl Crow is more popular today than Fleetwood Mac. You're telling me that if she were to join the band that it wouldn't appear to be some money grabbing opportunity for the band to have one last chance in the big spotlight? Come on! Fleetwood Mac doesn't need more members. They don't need Stevie either. Call up Bob Welch, Rick Vito or Billy Burnette. At least they ARE members of Fleetwood Mac and not wannabes.

I do not think she is. When was the last time she, if ever, sold out or even had the capacity to seemingly sell out Madison Square Gardens and other large venues. FM did so on the SYW tour. SC, instead, mostly has been a shed performer, which is fine by me, but it suggests less popularity

If they're thinking of adding Sheryl Crow it would be in keeping with history, if you think of Dave Mason's addition.

That wasn't a good fit for the band and I don't think Sheryl would be either. But it could be that she is just going to tour with them and share a few songs. Maybe there's no intention of her becoming a fifth member. There's a way that this can work out where everyone can benefit. Of course there are a trillion ways that this can go wrong as well:laugh:.

And it should be noted that Sheryl Crow tickets are WAY cheaper than other more veteran performers. Last time I saw Sheryl was at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, which has, perhaps, 3,000 seats. And most recently she played Irving Plaza, which is a big club. However, I must admit that she is moving way more albums than FM, but then again, it's been so long since FM released a new album...

I sincerely doubt this will be the type of situation where Sheryl Crow "JOINS" Fleetwood Mac. Joins Fleetwood Mac on the stage, sure. Becomes a member of Fleetwood Mac? Why? Why would she? She's got her own career. Sure, she'd be stoked to sing with the members of her favorite band, but when it comes down to it, her name is her brand just like Fleetwood Mac's name is their brand. She's not going to give that up... she's got her own albums to sell.

This could potentially be a very big tour for FM, with quite a bit of publicity because of Sheryl, thanks to VH1. That can be a good or bad thing for the fans, but this argument of "selling out" just needs to be buried. In most of the world's mind, FM is a sell out for the simple fact that the same few songs have been pounded in everyone's face on soft rock radio. They don't have **** to prove - the experimental album(s) have already been done - so why anyone here would act like they do is completely beyond me. It's about money for them, no bones about it, and I don't hold it against them. That is a boatload of money to say "no" to. Would I like an album full of ridiculously good FM songs? Definitely. Is it going to happen? Nope! They're owned by the label, and any time Lindsey makes an attempt at branching out a little, the Stevie faction doesn't "like" it, or doesn't "get" it.. or the guitar guys don't like his "mediocre" playing enough. And likewise for the Lindsey fans (like me) who like his works, but think the newest Stevie songs screw up the record.

There's no winning situation for this band when it comes to its fans. The most they can do is hit the road and hope we like it. It's just that this time, apparently it's about what it's going to take to get Stevie Nicks on the stage. And FM isn't going to do **** without Stevie from now on, so we just may as well accept it.

Just saying that somebody is "joining" Fleetwood Mac insinuates that Fleetwood Mac is still some living entity. It's not. They haven't been a "band" since the Time lineup was broken up. Fleetwood Mac doesn't even HAVE members anymore...they only have EX-members who get together to pocket some healthy doses of cash every few years.

But don't you think that Sheryl is in a perfect position to play the intermediary ala Christine? She has the musical chops and the producer/songwriter/engineer chops that Lindsey has, yet she also speaks from a feminine point of view. Plus, she seems like a very likeable, down-to-earth person (as long as she can keep her trap shut when it comes to politics). And because she has her own successful career, she really has no skin in the game, so she can walk away if things become too tense for her liking. As such, everyone will have an incentive to be respectful of each other and on their best behavior. I guess the big unknown is what will happen when you put an alpha female like Sheryl and an alpha male like Lindsey in the same room? It's either going to be phenomenally successful or disastrous. I think it could spur some healthy competition as well as an opportunity to learn from each other.

I agree that they don't have anything left to prove. That's why I think it's great that they are thinking of new ways to reinvent themselves, rather than just resting on their laurels and trotting out another Rumours tour.

She doesn't have to give it up. She could become a member of FM and keep her maiden name! Tour solo again right after the band tour, but under her own banner, just like Stevie does. Although I would hope that doesn't happen. I hope she tours with FM, maybe records with FM, but she doesn't need to be called part of FM.

I have to laugh because she mentions The Chain specifically. If she sang on that song, that means I would have to look at her face much earlier in the FM setlist than I would like. I'd prefer she come out during the second hour or so, not take the stage with The Chain. Her appearance that early on would tell me it was going to be a very loooong night.

FM might win itself some newer, young fans if they tour with her and I already know that Crow will get a lot of exposure out of it. Today, there were 273 newspaper clippings in my mail box from all over the world repeating the story. So, Crow has already made a bunch of headlines for herself.

I have not had that many items in my clipping mail box at one time since Sonny Bono skiied into a tree 10 years ago.

To my knowledge, Mick and John have never left FM?

But, you are correct in the other regard.

And, for the record, I liked the Time line up. I liked the guitarists and Bekka's voice. The music and they were just not commercial enough. Interestingly, when LB fails to sell well, it is considered a good thing and a genuflect to his artistic soul. When FM failed to sell well in the Time line up, it is considered something less, even though the new members were extremely talented.

Well, I've had a chance to digest this for a day or so now, and having followed this band for 31 years, I've learned that change is goin to happen. Regarding the Time lineup, I was very much against it at first but after listening to the album and seeing the tour in Wisconsin in 1995, I was pleasantly surprised. Did I like it more than when they had Peter or Lindsey and Stevie or the others, no, but I didnt listen to Time and immidiately wanna get a barf bag either. Same goes for the live show. I'm going to take a wait and see approach to see first of all exactly what role Sheryl will play, I.E a full fledged member or some other form of collaboration. Just my 2 cents.:)

Well, that's the problem. That was the beauty of FM, the personalities fit so well together. Sure, there was a lot of friction, but no one was trying to play the same role. I think Sheryl and Lindsey's talents are more similar than his and Christine's were and they are more likely to clash than complement one another.

I can just see them now arguing about whose Crystal rules.

He compromises with every FM situation, so why should this be any different? And even though he probably has tons of money stashed away, it must be a total buzzkill to go from making 8-figures in 2003-2004 to probably not even making barely 7-figures after that. There must be a side of him that still loves flying around in a private jet and playing the largest stages of the world. Otherwise he would have left and never come back a long time ago.

I can definitely see how Lindsey probably felt like the king of the hill after Christine left. So now he's going to have to eat some humble pie and get back to working as a team. I think this could only be a good thing.

Why should he need to eat humble pie at this stage in his career and what has he done wrong that he needs to eat humble pie anyway? People are usually only served humble pie as a penalty when they've usurped their boundaries. Lindsey hasn't done that. The very idea that having Sheryl around will somehow keep him in line is a big reason I would be against her inclusion. I don't want him in line. I may want him to work with an outside producer (like Ken or Richard), but I am very happy with him being who he, Tusk, is.

Furthermore, working as a team is only a good thing if the teamwork contemplated has merit. I don't want Lindsey to work as a team to put out garbage. If compromise works to the greater good, fine. Compromise for the sake of compromise alone is meaningless.

But don't you think that Sheryl is in a perfect position to play the intermediary ala Christine? She has the musical chops and the producer/songwriter/engineer chops that Lindsey has, yet she also speaks from a feminine point of view.

I don't know that I'd compare her chops to Lindsey's just because 1. he's my favorite and 2. their experiences are totally different, her coming from a solo situation from the start, etc. But. I do think she is the perfect person to play mediator, and honestly, if they're going to haul in another "name" musician, I would rather it be Sheryl than any of the pop tarts floating around out there now.

As a side note, I thought Brett did a fine job on the keys during the SYW tour, and I gained quite a bit extra respect for him during Lindsey's solo tour... so I hope there's still some work for him to do with the new round.

It would be interesting if someone were to do a poll...

Sheryl in?
Sheryl out?

As for me, I have never seen the Mac in concert and am grateful that I live near Denver, which I presume they would hit. Soooo ..... I am glad that they will come out one more time.

After listening to the Best Buy interviews from 1997 --
Chris basically says The Dance is the Swan Song, but that it was fun seeing Stevie take herself not so seriously and finding her sense of humor again.

Lindsey says he'll keep the door open if it feels right.

Mick is optimisitic and saying, this is just the beginning.... we've never thrown in the towel and said we're washed up. If we had done that, there would have been no Stevie & Lindsey.

John says - Lindsey was very generous, and allowed him to play his own parts... The Dance was interesting to bring them all back for the third (?) time...

And Stevie was all over the place in her comments, with a lot of "you knows" ...

With Sheryl Crow? Only the Gods Know the outcome...

Maybe she will spark something...something that was missing with Say You Will.

I am just glad to get a chance to see them...

Thanks Vivfox for keeping your ear to the ground...and your fingers on the keyboard...

I agree. It seems that Stevie needed a female friend on the tour or she wasn't going to do it so with Christine out of the picture it looks like it's Sheryl Crow. That's what I think is happening here, Gail. Stevie Nicks is finagling this.

She's not really going to join the band as a permanent member is she?I guess that hasn't really been settled yet. But Sheryl might as well join permanently. Otherwise why bother? What's the musical difference between recording & touring with the band as a member or as a "guest"? If Fleetwood Mac just wants a Name to tour with, why not pick an even bigger name? There are probably several bigger bands out there that would agree or want to co-tour with Fleetwood Mac. Why take Sheryl out unless as a permanent, new member?

And why are they even considering adding people now anyway? What, do they feel a second wind? Are they planning on cranking up the activity at this stage? Don't they want to retire yet from the grind? If she's watching this, Christine probably thinks they're all unhinged.

Hmmm. . . maybe it's a record label "suggestion." Beef up the old album sales, eh? Try to break that glass ceiling of 900,000 copies or whatever. With Fleetwood Mac's numbers & Sheryl Crow's numbers combined, you can sell 2 million! The suits undoubtedly consider that preferable to the status quo.

I liked Say You Will. It had a lot of music (18 songs).

I read where Stevie said it didn't work and others have said something was missing. I do miss the dominate organ playing that Chris brought to the band, rather than someone playing it part-time.

Actually, I think she likely could care a less. But, if she did, why wouldn't she be for it. CM does not come across to me like she is a bitter or jealous woman who sees this as sour grapes. So, I say she'd say something like people come and go in FM and that is just the way it is.

I think it is far more likely that she thinks they are batty for wanting to keep on at this at their age.

But, to each their own I guess.

Why should he need to eat humble pie at this stage in his career and what has he done wrong that he needs to eat humble pie anyway?

It's about the mucho dinero. Always has, always will be. No FM, no money.

People are usually only served humble pie as a penalty when they've usurped their boundaries. Lindsey hasn't done that. The very idea that having Sheryl around will somehow keep him in line is a big reason I would be against her inclusion.

The fact that SYW was not a runaway smash, and the fact that even Stevie could not pretend to like it means that she was not only unhappy with the final product, she was also unhappy with the process. Stevie is the McCartney (commercial) to Lindsey's Lennon (left of center). And when the balance is right, the end result can be brilliant (like Stevie's songs on Tusk). For SYW, there was clearly something off about that balance. Although many people liked the record (myself included), I did not embrace the record like I did the other FM albums; it was a bit too dark and over-indulgent in spots, which are the same things I could say about Lindsey's solo work. Lindsey's clearly dominated every pore of that album. I think Christine would have helped to strike the right balance. The same reasoning would apply to a tour as well. Lindsey had too much masturbatory "guitar hero" time on the SYW tour.

Furthermore, working as a team is only a good thing if the teamwork contemplated has merit. I don't want Lindsey to work as a team to put out garbage. If compromise works to the greater good, fine. Compromise for the sake of compromise alone is meaningless.

I think Lindsey (and his therapist) would probably consider compromise to be a healthy thing- in all aspects of his life. This isn't his band. It's the four (or five) of them together. He's had his opportunity to exorcise his demons with his solo work (that has gone largely unheard), so he should adapt to being a member of a band, or just leave the band altogether. I don't think Lindsey has helped to crank out garbage in the past, so I certainly don't think he will do so with Sheryl Crow on board. A change would do him good!

I never said their chops were comparable; just that SC has legit credibility as a singer/songwriter/producer/engineer, just like Lindsey has legit credibility. The other I like Sheryl Crow in this role is that, like Christine, she has a bit of a blues/R&B streak in her. No, she doesn't play the blues like Christine, but she does play a mean organ... If anything, I think her style is closer to Steve Winwood than Christine.

My mistake. When you said that she had the chops that Lindsey has except from a female perspective, I took that as a comparison...

At any rate. I am still guessing that it will be less of a "Hey look, Sheryl Crow is in Fleetwood Mac"... and more of a split bill, with "our good friend and special guest Sheryl Crow" joining in on a few pieces. The more I think about it, the less of a problem I have with it. My biggest problem with the SYW tour, in all honesty, was Stevie singing Don't Stop. I hope they do us the favor of taking it out of the setlist instead of bastardizing it further.

I don't disagree that Stevie writes some good material, but when arranged/produced by Lindsey - it is in another league altogether. All top bands need someone who will push them from doing the mundane/predictable to something a bit more leading edge and risky (commercially). Lindsey does that for Fleetwood Mac. Without him they wouldn't be the band they are.

He and Stevie are integral to Fleetwood Mac and both need to be comfortable with new members joining the band. Neither should have to 'put up or shut up'. I'd rather Mick, John and Lindsey tour and be happy and creative than see Mick/John/Stevie and Sheryl line up and no Lindsey.

I don't know what Lindsey said. My view, as stated, is that neither Lindsey or Stevie should have to put up with anyone in the band that they don't want to see in it. They are the what we pay our money to see. John McVie is simply the best bassist alive, Mr Fleetwood is an irrelevance (IMO) but the creative bit is Stevie and Lindsey and I don't want Sheryl Crow in preference to Lindsey.

You're, for whatever reason, automatically under the assumption that Lindsey is unhappy about any of this. Why does this automatically have to be a Lindsey or Sheryl issue? For all we know, he may have been the pushing the decision to bring Sheryl into the fold. We just don't know.

Also, I thought that Lindsey's production of Stevie's songs in SYW pretty much sucked badly. I really cannot get over the way he destroyed "Smile at You." And "Silver Girl" makes me want to slit my wrists. And the chipmunk-y choruses of "Say You Will". He's no Phil Spector and he's not even a Jimmy Iovine. I rather like the SYW version of Smile at You. The angry demo version was alright, but it sounded - zomg i'm going to say it - just like every. other. stevie demo out there. The SYW version has John's slammin' bass part on it, and obviously Stevie approved of it, or that "child" would not have made it to the disc.

Silver Hurl just sucks all around, everything about it sucks.. the way she sings it, the words, the melody... I don't think Lindsey could do anything at all to save that one... total fail. I don't know wtf they were thinking on that, to be honest, and I stand by the opinion that I stated however long ago in whatever thread it was - Silver Girl is a disgrace to the entire Fleetwood Mac catalogue. Other tracks that aren't my favorite I can deal with as a matter of difference in taste. But SG? No. It makes me irate and borderline physically ill when I accidentally hear more than 1.5 seconds of it because I didn't get to the skip button in time. And I've seen people who say they like it, and I just don't understand it at all, so I'm not going to argue with them about it.

I heard part of the demo and it is very different from the final version. The demo - some of which can be heard on the DR doc is very soft and pretty. So, I think LB ruined that one.

In the end, it sounded to me that LB lost his magic touch for her songs on SYW. It sounded like he put left over after though tracks on them. I liked many of the songs though, but they were just not that exciting or what he seemed to be able to do with them in the past - see Sara and Storms.

Not even Phil Spector, Lindsey Buckingham, Tom Petty, Jimmy Iovine, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, George Martin and Brendan O'Brien working TOGETHER could have salvaged either Silver Girl or Say You Will. They were crap songs.

My issue with your post was the bit 'adapt to being a member of the band or leave'. This is the guy that has given his best work to the band. During at least two albums when his colleagues had drink/drug issues - Mirage/Tango - he worked his arse off to get some product out that had some credibility. He is a team player!

I think there's far more good to SYW than bad. Certainly, I would like them to have done an album together from the ground up -- but even Lindsey said he wanted that. But as far as the most prevalent criticism goes, that it sounded like 2 solo albums smashed together . . . Well, there are worst things it could have sounded like. Perfectly pleased with SYW and it gave me songs that would have to be among my favorite FM tracks of all:
Thrown Down, Miranda and EFO.

Anyway, the one good thing about this is that I think Sheryl's presence may give us some new studio material -- which we probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I am going to state my own opinion about this situation and also state a fact. I used to like Shery Crow, but I am kind of loosing interest in her and her music because she is constantly (and this is a fact), rubbing it in everyone's faces that she's friends with Stevie Nicks. It is getting a little exausting. I know that some of you are fans of hers and don't get me wrong I like her music and I know that her and Stevie are friends, but there is no way that I will go to any Mac show and hear her singing one of Christine's songs. I will be pissed! I don't believe that she is replacing anyone, but I am not happy, because I think she begged to do it. Fleetwood Mac should just be Fleetwood Mac with who they had and have, no one else needs to come into the picture and mess anything up. Have you hear that woman sing live??? She sounds terrible. She doesn't even sound like the way she does on her records. She sings fine on her albums, but when she sings live she sounds like crap. And her singing Christine's beautiful music is going to be ruined.
Sorry that I am pissing everyone off, but I am mad about this, and I was even mad the night I watched the Hall of Fame ceremony in 1998 in my bedroom and when I heard her say that Mick Fleetwood told her, "You remind me of Stevie Nicks" my eyes opened with astonishment. Ever since then, that's when she has constantly been clinging to Stevie and doing this and doing that, it's boring me. It was good when they collaborated on the soundtrack to "Practical Magic", but now it's everywhere you turn around she's with her, and she's thinking that she's hot stuff because she knows her and is friends with her. (I am not jelious, if that's what you're joking about.) But there are other artists out there to collaborate with and work with. Hell Stevie's done it with Michelle Branch, and Vanessa Carlton, and those 2 aren't like that, why does Sheryl act like she's so special? Sorry to piss anyone off.

I don't think Lindsey has helped to crank out garbage in the past, so I certainly don't think he will do so with Sheryl Crow on board. A change would do him good!

That's because he refused to and didn't blindly "compromise" or automatically do what would have been commercially advantageous. And I hope he's still willing to stand up for that and ready to walk away if he's going to be unhappy with the result or with the band dynamic.

A change might do him good or it might do him bad. I don't advocate change or compromise for its own sake and I'm sure his therapist would not either. Knowing when to stand your ground is as important as knowing when to give in. It depends on how personalities meld together and what each person is bringing to the mix. It's like cooking. Onions may be good but that doesn't mean they belong in every dish that you cook.

If SYW was missing something, there's absolutely no reason to think that Sheryl Crow could supply what was lacking. She may help the band and she may not. If it turns out she's not working, I want Lindsey to walk away. I'm not waiting for anyone to give him an invitation to go. I'm the first one to want him out. Sheryl and Stevie can have each other and he can have his dignity. I just hope that he still prefers that to FM's money.

well, i don't see anyone who is pissed at you for anything, so there's no need to apologize for your opinion. however. i don't think it's cemented anywhere that sheryl will be singing christine's beautiful music.. so that's one bridge that we can't cross until we get there.

however. i don't think it's so much that sheryl clings to stevie like you say. stevie's said it several times that she and sheryl are "best friends." she always speaks highly of sheryl, so i doubt it's a clingy little sister type scenario.

anyway.. michelle branch and vanessa carlton are 2 decades younger than sheryl.. growing up on FM music AFTER the fact, while sheryl got to experience the white album and rumours first hand. not to say that you can't become just as attached to the music (obviously, because i didnt grow up at that time)... but i think her interest in fm is much more sincere, where as michelle and vanessa got a really cool, rare opportunity to team up with a rock legend through connections, rather than actual friendship.

but... like i said, the more i think about it, the less i guess it bothers me. my whole interest, honestly, lies with what lindsey does. if lindsey is there, i'll be there. if lindsey doesn't show up, i dunno, it depends on how much the tickets cost. BUT. on the up side, there is a potential for some Stevie and Sheryl doing If You Ever Did Believe live... and i would be really OKAY with that... great song, even from the demo, but I really like Sheryl's vocals with Stevie on the PM soundtrack.

(sorry if i'm hard to follow. i'm getting a little bit discombobulated with my wording here... my brain is fried from working in a stressful environment all day.)

Silver Hurl just sucks all around, everything about it sucks.. the way she sings it, the words, the melody... I don't think Lindsey could do anything at all to save that one... total fail.

Stevie made Silver Girl sound as good as it could possibly sound, for whatever that's worth. I love his production of all of his other Stevie tracks (except RTTG) and Stevie would have loved it too, if they had sold albums. Since they didn't, she doesn't.

As for RTTG, I don't think Lindsey produced it at all. It just goes on and on aimlessly, without rhythm or melody or reason. I think Stevie recorded it at the end of some drunken studio session, broke into my house and stuck that track onto my SYW cd without anyone producing it at all. It's one of the reasons I had a burglar alarm installed, so that it wouldn't happen again.

Actually, aside from RTTG, I think Lindsey needed an objective, outside ear more on his own songs than on Stevie's. I think his work on Stevie's material was excellent.

Nah, I'll take one of those as a preference.

anyway... like i said, the more i think about it, the less i guess it bothers me. my whole interest, honestly, lies with what lindsey does. if lindsey is there, i'll be there. if lindsey doesn't show up, i dunno, it depends on how much the tickets cost.

Same here. I'm now willing to travel across the Atlantic to see Lindsey as either a solo tour or with FM. My preference is a solo tour if I have to do that because I'd want as much Lindsey for my buck as possible. I wouldn't be willing to travel to England/Scotland to see Stevie though even though I could do it pretty cheaply.

[QUOTE=Sarah;746522] on the up side, there is a potential for some Stevie and Sheryl doing If You Ever Did Believe live... and i would be really OKAY with that... great song, even from the demo, but I really like Sheryl's vocals with Stevie on the PM soundtrack.
QUOTE]

Both of those songs are VERY good. I would want to hear CRYSTAL with Lindsey,Stevie, and Sheryl. Lindsey sings a verse, Stevie sings a verse, Sheryl plays keyboards, sings the higher back up, Lindsey does the white albums guitar parts or like the end of the buckinghamnicks live versions, and Stevie does the haunting add libs from the Practical Magic version, add John and Mic and ......My Dream, THE ULTIMATE VERSION OF CRYSTAL!!
Just dreaming, but i can hope.

You know what, I think you're right. Seems like she was proud of the record until.. "in retrospect, when we had to stay on the road extra because it didn't move units..." ... in my mind, though, that's more of a single choice problem. Peacekeeper - not a good single. Say You Will - not a good single. EFO - great single. Miranda - a safe enough Lindsey single. I would love to turn on the radio and hear Red Rover, but hey, it's not going to happen. :P

To me, RTTG is "fair" most of the way... then at the very end when the guitar kicks in, it's "good". ;)

Funny thread.

1. Fleetwood Mac stopped being a REAL band after “Tusk.” Since then, it’s been something they’ve penciled in to do every few years. So, adding Sheryl Crowe is really no big deal.

2. Considering her last big hit was only a few years ago, I hardly think the Dave Mason comparison is valid. And, unlike the "Time" band (which I thought was a great band), this band will have two vocalists from the "Rumours" album. If anything, it's more like "Behind The Mask."

3. This move, depending on what actually happens, may be a blessing for Lindsey. It takes pressure off of him. He will no longer be the sole person able to make something out of Stevie’s very basic songs.

4. I like the fact that somebody with a more dynamic upper vocal range is coming into the fold.

5. I love her pop sensibilities.

6. If nothing else, she'll bring something that's not Stevie or Lindsey into Fleetwood Mac, and after that last tour, I'm positive is not a bad thing. I thought it should have happened in 2003, to be honest.

7. I have to say I always thought Sheryl would do a killer version of "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love." If it only brings that song back, I'd be happy.

8. I’m all for it if it means I get to see John McVie play at least once more.

I wasn't comparing her to Time. I was addressing Matt's argument that Sheryl wasn't chosen because of instinct and intuition, like everyone else was. I don't think Dave Mason was chosen because Mick's instinct and intuition told him Mason would be a good fit for FM either.

HE IS talented, and he IS creative, and his tours like you say do satisfy those who are compleete with his tours only, but right now, I still think it would be MUCH more interesting to see Something from Fleetwood Mac. Especially if it has the potential to be freshened up a little bit with new blood.
I do love Stevie Nicks, but thats somehow different to me than "Fleetwood Mac" she just happens to be a part of it. but if she weren't involved in this, and the band decided to get someone else, Id still think that was interesting, cause its SOMETHING. Stevie was asked why they needed the extra vocalists, and her reply was, so that the band could sing the harmonies. I wonder if she realizes how much her voice has changed...can she hear it?

I am not sure if they need Sheryl for the vocal...but for the "player" part, and the producer, I think it will be interesting.

I need to look for a magazine from 2001 ? Entertaining? Appetitie? Some dining magazine, Stevie talks about Lindsey coming around the recording studio and being surprised/impressed to see Sheryl Crowe & ? Vanessa Carlton? there....she quoted herself as saying something like ... "Then maybe you should come around more often."

In the end, it sounded to me that LB lost his magic touch for her songs on SYW. It sounded like he put left over after though tracks on them. I liked many of the songs though, but they were just not that exciting or what he seemed to be able to do with them in the past - see Sara and Storms.

Anyone want to fess to the possibility that Stevie doesn't write as well as she used to...or that there's a reason why the songs that have been around as demos for 20 years didn't make the grade THEN, so why do you think they're going to be "Sara" & "Storms" worthy NOW?

(c'mon people, Lindsey has to have SOMETHING to work with.)

I just fail to really see how the dynamic would work. I barely "get" Stevie and Sheryl together, much less Sheryl and FMac. :shrug:That was my initial reaction. I think Stevie can still write a pretty good song... But she's certainly a different writer then she was - whether the lack of drugs or drive has anything to do with that or not... not sure. Her words are less cryptic in my opinion on the newer stuff.

I do think that a full TP and the Heartbreakers treatment of "Silver Girl" would have been quite interesting! I'm just thinking of a backing track in the vein of "Here Comes My Girl" would have made it a spectacular song. Instead we got that very icy, dry, warbly sounding arrangement. SYW is actually one of Stevie's better songs that I feel was totally undermined by LB's production. That little snippet of the demo you hear on the Destiny Rules documentary was so much better.

Of course I would expect any member of any team or unit to work as a team! And do I consider Lindsey a team player? Of course, for the most part. And when he felt like no longer playing a part in the team, he left, which was the right thing to do at the time.

Tusk wasn't brilliant because Lindsey was completely free. If anything, it would have been a disaster if the rest of FM backed off and let him do whatever he pleased. It's the balance/tension between Lindsey's creative muse and the other members that made it so good. After all the production is credited to "Fleetwood Mac with special thanks to Lindsey Buckingham."

Could you image Stevie, Christine, and Sheryl on stage all at the same time? I imagine that much combined Estrogen withing 20 feet of Lindsey would sap every last drop of testosterone from him in two seconds. He's going to need some kind of constrictive pressure suit to keep it all inside if he ever wants to take part in any kind of studio recording.

HejiraNYC

That's because he refused to and didn't blindly "compromise" or automatically do what would have been commercially advantageous. And I hope he's still willing to stand up for that and ready to walk away if he's going to be unhappy with the result or with the band dynamic.

Didn't he finally cave in and allow SYW to be released as a single album?

A change might do him good or it might do him bad. I don't advocate change or compromise for its own sake and I'm sure his therapist would not either. Knowing when to stand your ground is as important as knowing when to give in. It depends on how personalities meld together and what each person is bringing to the mix. It's like cooking. Onions may be good but that doesn't mean they belong in every dish that you cook.

Yes and no. You could live in a 100-acre wood and determine that the world is flat because your property is flat, and be perfectly content and live the rest of your life in bliss. Or you could travel away and get a second opinion. In the case of FM, I do think a change is needed. Why? Because everyone left the SYW recording session miserable and resentful, so much so that Stevie vowed never to record with FM unless something changed, e.g., Christine came back. Since you are a Lindsey fan, you would be perfectly content to have FM remain in limbo while he does his solo thing. But for the rest of us, we are anxious to see something new from FM, even if it means something has changed. Change can be good and it can be bad too. But with FM I'm willing to take that chance since it's better than getting nothing at all.

I actually like all of her SYW songs except Illume, and TSIL is AMAZING, except for Too Far From Texas, but thats just because of my personal dislike for Natalie Maines, so I refuse to listen to it. Stevies newer material is good. And Michele, I agree Thrown Down is MUCH more than pretty good.

I think this might be a good thing (Why be negative?).
Sheryl is someone who grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac, and she loves Stevie Nicks. I don't think of her as Christine's replacement, i don't even think of her as a new member of the band. I think what they are trying to do is like a co-headlining tour or even try something different. I don't see this as a desperate thing either. We all know how much Stevie loves sheryl (even wrote about her and as much as people hate that song she wrote it because it means something to stevie, and i love that song). Sheryl is not going to leave her solo career to joing a band, i think is cool that she gets to work with people that she loves their work. and i can't wait to see what happens.

What? You are in no position to tell me what would make me perfectly content. Yes, I am a Lindsey fan, among many other things. First and foremost I am a Fleetwood Mac fan. I'm an FM fan before I am a Lindsey fan. In fact, I'm a Buckingham Nicks fan before I am a Lindsey fan. Indeed, I'm a Christine and Lindsey fan before I'm a Lindsey fan. What would make me perfectly content would be for him to make new music with Stevie and/or Christine.

I have never said I want a Lindsey solo tour before an FM tour, because I never even thought of wanting such a thing first. I've always wanted Lindsey working with those 4 people.

Yes and no. You could live in a 100-acre wood and determine that the world is flat because your property is flat, and be perfectly content and live the rest of your life in bliss. Or you could travel away and get a second opinion. In the case of FM, I do think a change is needed.

You keep saying you want change. I have no objection to change, I'm just not indiscriminate. I think change is great, as long as it's the right change. I don't think ANY change is preferable to the status quo. As for your analogy, Lindsey has never accepted that the world is flat. He was always the one member of FM who explored and discovered new worlds. He's never been static. He's created change from within himself and the assumption that a new person will bring advancement and progress to the band is a faulty one. They won't, if they aren't the right person, the right fit, for that particular band.

Lindsey is into experimental music, but the type of music that inspires and challenges him isn't the type of music that Sheryl Crow has produced thus far. Maybe together they will surprise and can make something wonderful, something that neither could create alone. However, if the combined result is insipid, greeting card fodder, then I'd rather have nothing than have a new, unimproved Fleetwood Mac which frustrates Lindsey. Not everything and everyone is compatible. If Sheryl Crow works, that's all good, but if she doesn't I hope Lindsey will leave rather than feeling he has no choice and cannot walk away from a lucrative venture. I want him always to be willing to walk.

Although it is highly unlikely that, unless LB was being an exceptional prick, FM would choose SC over him. Talk about cutting off your nose despite your face!

It's not a question of Lindsey being anything. Stevie indicated that she did not want to tour. If an ultimatum is being presented to Lindsey, "Either we tour with Sheryl or we don't tour at all," then I only hope that his personal life and finances are such that he can always reject that ultimatum.

Thinking of change, change, change -- something I'd heard much too much about in the Democratic stump speeches -- I've just been thinking that if Little Big Town announced that they would be collaborating on an album and tour with Lindsey, I'd be ok with that, because I liked what I glimpsed on Crossroads.

Sheryl is an unknown quantity though. I've heard her stuff and I've heard FM's and I am not sure how the twain will mix.

I know, I was worried it was going to be Vanessa Carlton there for a while myself. I guess of the two, I would rather have Sheryl.

Umm, after reading all these posts and trying to digest this news, I have to say I am excited that FM will be touring again and also have mixed feelings about it. I am happy that Stevie will have a girl pal to hang out with on the tour, but don't know how everyone will work together. But then again, you would think that everyone in the band would have had to "sign off" on the idea. So, LB must be okay with it at some level you would think.

And maybe we will get lucky and get a couple of new songs in the set list. I do hope though that her role is more to play piano and harmonize rather than singing Christine's songs.

I can only imagine the "theatrics" banter between Stevie and Sheryl up there on stage. I am still confused if Sheryl will be considered an "official" FM member or just a guest musician. I am getting the feeling she will be an official member, but time will tell I guess. I only think this because I am reading between the lines and think Sheryl will be involved with a possible new CD release next year, but still confused for now. I wish FM would release an official statement on this to clear some stuff up.

One thing is constant when it comes to FM, and that one thing is drama.

And yeah Sheryl can produce but I shouldn't think Lindsey will be too happy about abdicating or sharing his throne in the control room. Hey when has another individual Mac member ever had a production credit? Well exactly! If he let Stevie into the booth to do a bit on her own songs, there might be less general moaning from her about "I don't like what Lindsey does to my songs".

I foresee that if Buckingham/Crow really take over the control room - hey presto. Stevie gets upset and leaves again and does yet another album about how badly she's been hurt by everybody and dressing up her issues with SC/FM under the usual swords and sorcery disguise.

Sorry to be cynical.

I'm really excited too and look forward to seeing what Sheryl can bring to Fleetwood Mac.

Sheryl Crow may be used in the same fashion that Steuart Smith has been with The Eagles since 2001. "Steuart Smith is a guitarist, vocalist, writer and producer currently working with American rock band the Eagles." He works with The Eagles, but he's not really an "Eagle." He's a hired gun. And he has contributed songs on their current album. But I don't think he has any weight in terms of how the band is run, etc. He seems to be there in a supporting role, which is how I imagine Sheryl will be used.

There was a lot of anger when Steuart came on board, as if he could possibly replace Felder. He didn't replace Felder. He's not a "full fledged flyin' Eagle." Sheryl will not replace Christine.

At the same time, while I don't see Lindsey taking "orders" from Sheryl, I think there could be some useful collaboration. Why wouldn't there be? She's got talent. She's got smarts. She's got a lot of energy. She can ROCK! Lindsey might enjoy a bit of that.

About this business of Lindsey walking. If there are "issues," I don't see Lindsey being the one to walk. Right about now, the first issue might be Sheryl announcing her role in the band before Fleetwood Mac did. Mick might have to have that chat with Sheryl about "you're in a band now" with her! I think there will be a system of checks and balances system on what Sheryl can contribute to the band. Sheryl seems to really want to do this. At the same time, if Sheryl can't "fit", she'll be the one to walk. But all of this collaboration could be a win-win situation. We get a new album AND a tour. And a varied set list. And the band plays on.

(And I still believe Lindsey will put out his album. At least I hope so.)

I think Stevie can still write a pretty good song... But she's certainly a different writer then she was - whether the lack of drugs or drive has anything to do with that or not... not sure. Her words are less cryptic in my opinion on the newer stuff.

I agree. Her new songs are pretty darn strong, I think. Throw Down, Destiny Rules, Illume, Bombay Sapphires, are good examples. And as far as the old songs that she drudged out for TISL and SYW, I think some of them are fantastic, especially Planets of the Universe, which is one of my favorite Stevie songs.

Okay... sorry... I must have confused you with Sarah, who admitted to preferring Lindsey solo. Take a chill pill, please. :wavey:

You keep saying you want change. I have no objection to change, I'm just not indiscriminate.

Did I say I was for "indiscriminate" change?

I think change is great, as long as it's the right change.

"Right" according to.....?

I don't think ANY change is preferable to the status quo.

Right now the status quo is that Stevie and Lindsey are at loggerheads with each other and Stevie's refusal to re-join the band is preventing FM from working together again. The net result is zero music from FM. Sure, Stevie can always have a change of heart... but they no longer have decades to stare each other down waiting for someone to give. If they have the ability and desire to do it, NOW is the time to do it, not 10 years from now.

There is no denying that Lindsey has pushed the musical boundaries within the band, as evidenced by the relatively tepid BTM and Time albums that weren't produced with Lindsey. But Lindsey simply doesn't know what he doesn't know. Accordingly, he doesn't know everything about everything. Nobody does. Albert Einstein probably didn't know how to tile a bathroom wall. I think every new experience, good or bad, imparts some kind of a lesson, and perhaps it can spark something even more brilliant. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

But personally where I think the change is needed most is interpersonally. Just judging from the DR documentary, it's clear that there is something fundamentally dysfunctional about the way Stevie and Lindsey work together in isolation. And Stevie is not blameless either. Not only do they have tons of emotional baggage behind them, they come from very different places musically. And talk about stubborn! Lindsey is classically passive aggressive, whereas Stevie feels the need to over-assert herself in the male-dominated environment. The end result was constant feuding, painful decisions and eventually deep resentment. A change to this interpersonal dynamic vis a vis Sheryl Crow may help to make this a more tolerable, democratic situation. If nothing else, Sheryl seems like she would be a good babysitter for those two.

Lindsey is into experimental music, but the type of music that inspires and challenges him isn't the type of music that Sheryl Crow has produced thus far.

I would hardly consider Lindsey "experimental music." He experiments with production styles, surely, but his pop sensibilities are always firmly in place. I don't think you will hear Lindsey's name spoken in the same breath as the Velvet Underground, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Laurie Anderson, etc. In that sense, Sheryl and Lindsey share some common ground.

Maybe together they will surprise and can make something wonderful, something that neither could create alone.

We all hope so!

However, if the combined result is insipid, greeting card fodder,

aka, most of Lindsey's songs on Mirage. I kid, I kid... well, kinda sorta... But you must admit that FM has cranked out the occasional syrupy sweet song... "Mystified" always sends me into a hyperglycemic coma...

then I'd rather have nothing than have a new, unimproved Fleetwood Mac which frustrates Lindsey. Not everything and everyone is compatible. If Sheryl Crow works, that's all good, but if she doesn't I hope Lindsey will leave rather than feeling he has no choice and cannot walk away from a lucrative venture. I want him always to be willing to walk.

Well, hopefully they will get the chemistry sorted out before they commit to some huge recording contract and advance. I would like to think that they are truly going to take this one day at a time and will only go to the next level if the feeling is right.

It's not a question of Lindsey being anything. Stevie indicated that she did not want to tour. If an ultimatum is being presented to Lindsey, "Either we tour with Sheryl or we don't tour at all," then I only hope that his personal life and finances are such that he can always reject that ultimatum.

Michele

Of course he has the right to turn all of this down. But the fact that Sheryl is even talking about this in the midst of her own album promotion pretty much shows that this is beyond merely the negotiating stage, and that Lindsey has signed on. Whether he was coerced to jump in, or whether he jumped in of his own accord will probably never be known, so we should assume that he felt that this was at least a workable situation.

Oh no need. I just don't like to have my feelings described as being exactly the opposite of what they are.

I think that's the main thing that's giving me cause for pause. If they aren't considering Sheryl because she might be someone great to work with for all of them, but are teaming with her because that's Stevie's condition for continuing with the band, I think that's a bad way to start off in the first place. But hey, it could work out. Sometimes, arranged marriages turn out to be the most loving.

I disagree entirely. I don't think Red Rover, Murrow or Come are about pop sensibilities and I see no similarity between Sheryl's style and his. More importantly, I don't see any similarity between Sheryl's sensibilities and his. But I don't have all of Sheryl's albums. I only have VBO and Greatest Hits.

aka, most of Lindsey's songs on Mirage.

With their retro commentaries, I found Book of Love and Oh Diane more experimental than syrupy. Whether they worked for me or not, if they failed, it was because he aspired for something different, not because he went for the Top 40 -- not unless he suffered a blow to the head and thought it was 1952 rather than 1982.

Whether he was coerced to jump in, or whether he jumped in of his own accord will probably never be known, so we should assume that he felt that this was at least a workable situation.

The thing is, I'm not worried about what he feels now. I'm worried about whether he will be independent enough to end it if it's not working out, as he has been in the past. I hope he's not softer now than he was then. You're right, Lindsey and Stevie don't have decades to stare each other down anymore, but they also don't (or shouldn't) have decades to feel creatively stifled. Although others here feel that the SYW tour was all about the money, not about the music anymore, I didn't. Even if they played few songs from it, FM was touring on a new album and it was one Lindsey was proud of. I don't want him on stage with Sheryl Crow for the wrong reasons. I don't consider that a compromise or change that will do anyone any good.

I think you're selling Lindsey short.

How exciting....should all this come to fruition, I think this sounds very cool..
FM has always been about changing the guard, when nesessary, Sheryl is a super musician on her own and when she sings with others (bet Linds won't mind an extra backup guitar in the mix) and it'll keep Stevie happy, so group harmony will be hopefully be at a premium. Besides when she says she'll be "joining", I highly doubt it'll be FOREVER (just a tour I'd guess).
So c'mon folks lets look at this as a positive move, I might even think about seeing them if they come over here.:]

Blasphemy.

It's not like Stevie's versions were anything to write home about on the "Behind The Mask" tour. (IMO, they were horrid, if not completely unlistenable.) Bekka & co. at least did something different, and interesting, with the song. Sorry, I don't buy into that "sacred song" bull$h*t. If Lindsey and Stevie could do "Green Manalishi" and "Hypnotized," then there's nothing wrong whatsoever with Bekka doing "Gold Dust Woman" other than the fact that it was already one of those songs I really never need to hear again. Frankly, I think "Angel" or "I Don't Want To Know" would have been better choices.

I'm not that excited about a Sheryl Mac 2009 Tour; it's always weird to hear other vocalists sing songs we've all been listening to for years.

IMHO, the real benefit of this "collaboration" would be in the studio; having a fresh songwriting/producing influence may be the catalyst for some interesting work.

Forgive my ignorance, but what are Stevie and Lindsey currently at loggerheads over. I thought the whole basis of The Dance/SYW was that the loggerheads era had largely passed.

And I have to confess that I don't think of Stevie as Sweet Girl - she strikes me more as Spoilt Girl.

Mind you, Mick had every right to say "grow up woman, you're the only woman in the band, take it or leave it". But he has obviously chosen not to. Judging by Sheryl's comments in the article, this is a joining of sorts when she says she'd love to do Second Hand News with them. To say nothing of The Chain which is usually the OPENING number, not a 'bring on the support act' encore.

So my opinion?
Fleetwood Mac without Stevie or Christine is nothing. But Stevie will not tour or do new album neither will do another woman in FM. Definitely, the best would be Christine, but we know ... she don´t want to do anything, so if Sheryl won´t become a member of FM we can say goodbye FM. It´s some chance to saw FM once again, or more?

So I´m definitely agree with Sheryl to beeing member of FM. It´s not some compensation of Christine, it´s simply new member also with new songs in FM concert setlist.

But the one thing I want all the time is to saw Stevie or FM touring in Europe... I don´t know if this, what is happening, helps it or not.

I'm just curious how exactly it would play out. I'm not a fan of Sheryl's, but until there's information as to what her role is going to be, I think I can deal. Especially if it means the opportunity to see FM live again. I don't really understand how Sheryl would be what Stevie needs to continue touring, though. If it's true she needs another female so she's not surrounded by guys, on a personal level, she can and has had that. If it's on a creative level, are we to believe that Sheryl coming into the band is automatically going to give Stevie whatever leverage she may need or is looking for? That's seem a little unlikely. But I do hope for the best.

Every situation involves "ultimatums," whether it is over nightly minimums, percentages of the gate, or even the color of M&Ms in the backstage area. Of course some ultimatums are more easy to accommodate than others. But, again, even if Stevie was the one to make this ultimatum, I suspect that there is no way Lindsey would have agreed unless he somehow felt like it was going to work out.

Well, I think you should check out Sheryl's "The Globe Sessions." I can see why you would think that Sheryl's musical sensibilities would be sickeningly sugary- I think her pop singles, while catchy, can sometimes be too slick, especially the new songs she recorded for VBO. "The Globe Sessions," while not exactly experimental, is, for lack of a better term, rich- just a very dark, cathartic song cycle that holds together as a single theme. And you can definitely see how "It Don't Hurt" was almost like "The Chain" part 2. It's such a good album that I feel like listening to it again now as I type this...

With their retro commentaries, I found Book of Love and Oh Diane more experimental than syrupy.

Huh? They were shamelessly sentimental retro songs in the vein of Buddy Holly and the Beach Boys. Nothing experimental about them. I actually LOVE "Book of Love," but abhor "Oh Diane" and "Can't Go Back."

Whether they worked for me or not, if they failed, it was because he aspired for something different, not because he went for the Top 40 -- not unless he suffered a blow to the head and thought it was 1952 rather than 1982.

I think the general critical sentiment at the time of Mirage's release was that it was a highly commercialized atonement for that wackiness that was Tusk. I think Mirage had the stink of 'pop hit' all over it. This was definitely not an experimental moment in the history of FM.

The thing is, I'm not worried about what he feels now. I'm worried about whether he will be independent enough to end it if it's not working out, as he has been in the past. I hope he's not softer now than he was then.

If UTS was any indication, I think a kind of "softening" is already in place. Face it, domestic bliss (and age) has made him a happy man, and I think much of UTS showed that. But there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. And one could argue that his move back to the FM fold was itself the result of mellowing, getting on in years, and getting rid of a lot of old baggage. He's not the angry young "Never Going Back Again" man anymore.

You're right, Lindsey and Stevie don't have decades to stare each other down anymore, but they also don't (or shouldn't) have decades to feel creatively stifled.

I think Stevie is already creatively stifled, Lindsey not so much. I'm hoping that SC in FM will help to inspire her to take chances again.

Although others here feel that the SYW tour was all about the money, not about the music anymore, I didn't. Even if they played few songs from it, FM was touring on a new album and it was one Lindsey was proud of.

Agreed. You can't fault a band for touring behind a new album and actually playing 5-6 songs from it.

I don't want him on stage with Sheryl Crow for the wrong reasons. I don't consider that a compromise or change that will do anyone any good.

She doesn't have anyone to blame for that though. With SYW, she can blame it on Christine not being there, or on Lindsey being Lindsey.

I think she was not satisfied with SYW - just as she was not satisfied with Street Angel. That is why I compared SYW to TISL. They both sold in the same ball park, but she was very happy with TISL even though it did not sell well and produced no big hit save for a dance club hit. So, if sales (solo or not) were the talisman for her griping, she should have griped about TISL and OOTM, the latter of which is viewed as critical and financial failure.

I don't know - I though the song TISL was stunning as was Thrown Down and Illumne (mostly) -- I think problem is not with her writing, it is with her singing. I do also think that LB just lost the touch a little, though the guitar work on Ilume and the Thrown Down is great IMO.

Does FM need to tour again or are they a dinosaur?
Mick & John are road dogs and will get on the tour bus.
They don't write songs, and they don't sing.
Mick loves the publicity.
John loves someone else taking care of him. (IMO)
They are all approaching their 60's, (dinosaur status?) but the Rolling Stones are still rocking.

What does FM need to record and tour again?

-Third song writer (Stevie is out of ideas IMHO)
-Female (to appease Stevie and add to her girlfriends)
-Player (some one who can add to the band, and not just sing)
-Someone with name-recognition to sell tickets
-Someone to counter balance Lindsey
-Someone secure and experienced enough to tread into foreign (FM) territory

With that being said, I am NOT a Sheryl Crow fan...but who else fits the bill?

I don't know whether he is opposed to it, as we don't have all the facts. From what we do know, that Stevie said she would not tour again without Christine and that Sheryl is a good friend of Stevie's, someone Sheryl considers a mentor, I am more inclined to believe that Sheryl coming is Stevie's idea and Sheryl's meant to be -- not an intermediary, not a musical addition -- but an ally for Stevie.

I don't suspect that it was something that happened organically with the band saying it would be good to have someone new in the mix and thinking about Sheryl because of her musical talents.

It's the way it came about that makes it seem like an inauspicious beginning
for Sheryl and the rest of the band, aside from Stevie.

We also know they talked about SC being in the band in some capacity during the SYW era when they all worked together in some capacity and LB and SC worked together on La Nicks' solo record a few years before that. So, it is not an out of the blue idea and IMO it is an organic (I hate that word  ) thing. In fact, believe La Nicks joked about allowing SC to tour with them or something like that.

Every situation involves "ultimatums," whether it is over nightly minimums, percentages of the gate, or even the color of M&Ms in the backstage area.

Ultimatums about money, music and dressing room riders aren't personal like saying, "I don't want to work with you alone" is. It would be better if they went to counseling together, rather than stick another personality in the mix. Aside from that, the problems I think Stevie had working with Lindsey aren't going to be cured by having Sheryl there. Their rollercoaster relationship is going to continue no matter who else is in the band.

So, my concern is already how far Lindsey was ready to go to make this work. When someone says, "You can't have me unless you take my BFF," then I'm thinking maybe the time has come when you should think about not wanting to work with that person anymore. Maybe things are just too far gone.

I think Stevie is already creatively stifled, Lindsey not so much.

Yes, and it's precisely because Lindsey has been feeling so free as of late, that I think Stevie is hoping that Sheryl will stifle him a little. Lindsey said he was happy during the SYW tour and commented that not everyone (Stevie I assume) liked his freedom. Although, as far as stage equality goes, Stevie certainly could have had more songs in the setlist if she'd liked, but she kept dropping them.

Stevie complained that Lindsey doesn't listen to her and that they were all school children during recess, without a teacher present. She wants Sheryl to bring regimen. And I don't want too much regimen. Dropping Come from the setlist is one thing, an easy accommodation to make, for a new band member. Bringing more of Stevie's vision to Stevie's songs is something I'd be willing to see Sheryl do (I don't know about Lindsey though). I'd let Sheryl produce all of Stevie's stuff, if that will make them happy. There's no reason he should try to preserve that musical link with Stevie, if she doesn't want it anymore. I'll mourn the loss of his magic on her songs, but I hope he has better things to do with his time.

He can give Stevie completely to Sheryl. It's Lindsey creativity on his own songs and ideas that I don't want to see stifled.

I think the general critical sentiment at the time of Mirage's release was that it was a highly commercialized atonement for that wackiness that was Tusk. I think Mirage had the stink of 'pop hit' all over it. This was definitely not an experimental moment in the history of FM.

There may have been a few reviews to that effect, but that wasn't the general consensus about Mirage. However, it was Lindsey's take on Mirage and he wasn't happy with the album, because he felt it was his penance after Tusk. That's exactly why I don't want him to be involved in another punishment or "make up" album this late in his career. I want new music and Sheryl may help me get it, which is a good thing. The bad thing would be if Lindsey feels pushed into giving up everything he found satisfying about SYW, to keep on working with Stevie. After all these years, he still feels bad about Mirage and felt that Tango was needed to take that bad taste out of his mouth. Nearing 60, I don't think he needs any more albums that make him feel he let himself down in is discography.

Lindsey's Mirage songs paid homage to the 50s, but using modern studio technology to make the old sounds. That was what was experimental about it. After Lindsey left the band, Mick commented that instead of just playing the guitar, Lindsey would spend hours trying to make his guitar sound like a violin. Lindsey's Mirage songs were throwbacks, but they were not created the way the sounds they honored were created 25-30 years earlier. The fun of finding new ways to be Brian Wilson or to sing the Monotones, rather than doing it the old way is a learning experience in itself. In fact, I think Empire State is more derivative than the retro songs. I think his music often moves forward by looking back and he is the last member of Fleetwood Mac to stand still.

You might not compare him to Laurie Anderson, but I would and I know she inspires Lindsey, so if she were joining the band, I'd have a lot less trepidation about what it would do to him.

Well, I don't think there is any hard rule that CHANGE=COMPROMISE.

I can agree with that but am somewhat surprised because you were the one saying Lindsey had to compromise and eat "humble pie," which is the post of yours I was responding to the in the first place. Evolution can be good (or not) but with your "humble pie" entree you seemed to be talking more retribution than evolution. I didn't know what he had done wrong that he had to be chastened and eat humble pie about. I like his pride and hope it remains intact. Hopefully Stevie doesn't share the notion that Lindsey has to eat humble pie. If she does, my hope is that he simply forgets about FM before stooping to pick up a spoon, leaving Stevie to eat Crow.

^ Didn't you just post this earlier?

Why should this be in the Rumours forum? It's not ABOUT the Rumours lineup. POST-Rumours forum, yeah, that I'll go along with.

Only you, Chili. You know damn well nobody would see this thread if it were posted there.

I can't believe I'm saying this. I agree.

I Think this is compleate b.s.
I really don't want the final chapter of this great band written this way. the band don't deserve it..the fans don't deserve it..and history don't deserve it
I can see the set meeting already

ok we need to bump rhiannon for my favorite mistake
i'm so afraid to be replaced with soak up the sun
all i wanna do replaces stand back

how much worse can this get?? oops we were gonna bring back storms but we are doing a sheryl song instead.

I have to ask - are you for real? Jock sniffing? You may not like Crow, but the bitch is talented, and no hanger-on. She made a name for herself & became successful BEFORE any of the collaborations with Stevie, so you don't seem to have a leg to stand on with that argument. And yeah, what a horrible bitch she is for doing charity benefits & for daring to take the stage with people who invited her to do so, or to collaborate with other artists & try to create music. That whore.

You're right, of course, that's the only reason it could possibly be.

Matt

Oh, so you've talked to Mick & John & found it not to be the case this time?

And what makes you think this wasn't an act of "intuition and instinct?" It isn't like Mick picked her name out of a hat. One could argue that this has been in the works for a very long time vis a vis TISL, SYW. If they were really selling out, Mick would have been pursuing Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch or maybe even Colbie Caillat, which wouldn't have been that much of a stretch considering her familial ties to FM. Considering it looked like Mick had to choose between adding another chick to the band or losing Stevie altogether, I think this move was a no-brainer.

Agreed.

Matt

Ah, see, but then the newcomer would be accused of, how was it put earlier, jock sniffing. Riding the Mac's coattails. Can't win with you unless they ask a former member of the band to join, I guess. God forbid things move forward.

Well I am glad to see that Stevie is secure enough to hand the FM spot light over to someone else. They have very different voices when they sing live, in the past Sheryl has outshone and outsang Stevie. I am a little shocked that she is so willing to hand over the "FM diva reins" to another star!! I will believe it when I see it.

Hand over the spotlight? How is she handing over the spotlight? Mama can hold her own, regardless of who's currently in better voice. It obviously wasn't an issue on the TISL tour, so why would it be now?

Just my 2 cents.

Well said.

Speak for yourself! John McVie is pretty much the main reason I still listen to the band.

You still listen to the band?

I am going to state my own opinion about this situation and also state a fact. I used to like Shery Crow, but I am kind of loosing interest in her and her music because she is constantly (and this is a fact), rubbing it in everyone's faces that she's friends with Stevie Nicks. It is getting a little exausting...I don't believe that she is replacing anyone, but I am not happy, because I think she begged to do it....Fleetwood Mac should just be Fleetwood Mac with who they had and have, no one else needs to come into the picture and mess anything up...Have you hear that woman sing live??? She sounds terrible. She doesn't even sound like the way she does on her records. She sings fine on her albums, but when she sings live she sounds like crap...Ever since then, that's when she has constantly been clinging to Stevie and doing this and doing that, it's boring me...It was good when they collaborated on the soundtrack to "Practical Magic", but now it's everywhere you turn around she's with her, and she's thinking that she's hot stuff because she knows her and is friends with her.

Um. OK. You do know that Sheryl & Stevie haven't really been seen together since 2001/2002, right? And that was 7 years ago! You do realize that some people assumed they must have had a big ol' fight since they weren't out & about & talking about what good friends they are, right? You do realize that Sheryl Crow has collaborated with several other musicians besides Stevie, right? You do realize that Sheryl was famous & successful BEFORE she started hanging out with Stevie, right? And have you heard Stevis sing live? Yeah, sorry, it's not like her albums - and it shouldn't be! If I wanted to hear the album version of any song by ANY artist, I'd stay home & listen to it rather than shell out cash for a concert. In regards to Sheryl, have you ever heard "Strong Enough" live? or "Safe & Sound?" or "THe Difficult Kind" live?

Can you point me to a recent article/interview where Sheryl "is constantly (and this is a fact), rubbing it in everyone's faces that she's friends with Stevie Nicks. It is getting a little exausting..." That is not a fact, honey, that's your opinion. And you're entitled to it. But the facts (the real ones) do not back up your argument, IMO. Sheryl & Stevie have not mentioned eachother in detail in years - YEARS! I'm not pissed at your, but I think you're wrong.

To me, RTTG is "fair" most of the way... then at the very end when the guitar kicks in, it's "good". ;)

Oh, God, I remember in '03 bitching about how they needed to release more singles. They finally did, Thrown Down & Steal Your Heart Away - right before Thanksgiving. You know what happened? All the stations that typically play AC music switched to their "all Christmas music" format & that plan was shot to hell.

I don't think she's writing much AT ALL. Her "recent writing" is now 5-10 years old. So I don't know - maybe her dad dying & the last Mac tour & Chris leaving for good & LB having kids but her not will inspire her again. But I don't know. I'd be happy if they DID take some of her "vault" material & worked on it. Why not?

Oh no need. I just don't like to have my feelings described as being exactly the opposite of what they are.

Michele

Wow. You seem to be taking this really seriously - and personally. Just an observation.

This whole thing seems so strange to be because the Stevie-Sheryl friendship looked like it was sorta over, the last time they were phoographed together was in 2002, I think?

Exactly.

I agree - we'll have to wait & see. I like discussing "what ifs" but Jesus, people, calm down. We have no idea if this will be the best move ever, or suck the hardest. I'm glad this is igniting discussion, but wow. :p I personally don't know how I feel about the news. I'm definitely not upset - maybe more cautiously optimistic?

^^^^

We also know they talked about SC being in the band in some capacity during the SYW era when they all worked together in some capacity and LB and SC worked together on La Nicks' solo record a few years before that. So, it is not an out of the blue idea and IMO it is an organic (I hate that word  ) thing. In fact, believe La Nicks joked about allowing SC to tour with them or something like that.

Yessir, you're correct. There have been rumblings about this since 2001. Just hasn't been anything recently, and I think it took most of us by surprise since Sheryl & Stevie haven't been as publicly connected as they had in the past.

Dear Gawd I hope this doesn't actually come to fruition.

While I have nothing against Sheryl's work as a solo artist (and actually own most of it on CD), I have been less than thrilled with her collaborations with Stevie Nicks (IMO, TISL is Nicks' worst album to date, not to mention the awful Practical Magic soundtrack) and I shudder to think what a collaboration with Buckingham (and, for that matter, Buckingham AND Nicks) might sound like.

And though I know I'm probably in the minority on this one, I welcomed the change in the balance of the sexes within the band. The SYW lineup had a much more testosterone laden sound to it that appealed to me and my Lindsey-loving soul much more than it ever had before.

Sigh. :distress:

I also feel compelled to make two more points.

First and foremost: the allegation that Stevie isn't happy with 'SYW' only because it didn't sell. Not true -- Lindsey told David Giammarco, of the Globe & Mail newspaper, that Stevie was "seeing the album through dark colors."
The comment was made BEFORE the album was released (the article was printed March 29th, 2003), and therefore lonnnnng before any sales figures were in.

Secondly, the idea that Lindsey is being strong-armed into working with Sheryl Crow. Sure, Sheryl's involvement may be the condition which Stevie has given in order for her to work with Fleetwood Mac, but one must note that Lindsey also made certain conditions for his involvement with 'SYW.' Including threatening to take back some of his songs ("I own the masters") if the band didn't issue a double-album. Ultimately, of course, it was Lindsey's decision to issue a single album, but the threat was still made and the condition was there.

Thanks to my dear friend who brought those up to me~

Wow. You seem to be taking this really seriously - and personally. Just an observation.

Yeah, I suppose I do take it seriously, as seriously you can take anything about a rock band. A forum that regularly dissects everything about the rockband, from its reebox to tophats, ad nauseum, is certainly the place for such "serious discourse." Relatively speaking, a new band member (and maybe tour and album) is a staggeringly more important subject than most that come down the pike as far as the band is concerned.

As far as taking it personally goes, I don't even know what "it" is.

Secondly, the idea that Lindsey is being strong-armed into working with Sheryl Crow. I made the comparison between Mick and Lindsey's Destiny Rules conversation and this Crow situation on the board last night. It wasn't really Lindsey's decision to issue a single album, because if he didn't Stevie wasn't going to do a full tour. So, I think she made the final ultimatum on that issue as well and that's why he said he couldn't afford to do the double album because he couldn't pay for the extra songs (over 12) if he wasn't going to be getting tour money to cover it.

As for Stevie's reaction to SYW, both during and after the making of the album she had great praise for Lindsey's production of her songs. She talked about how they had fought constantly, but seemed to think the finished product was worth the battle. We could see from some Destiny Rules promos that she was mad that Lindsey didn't want to use one of her songs. Then, after the production was over, when the tour first kicked off, she still seemed to be mad at him and he was complaining about the other band members going to Hawaii and Stevie not thanking him. So, they were not happy with each other, but from what came out, I got the impression that their album fights were about the which songs would be used, album length, sequencing (and single selections), all those issues that came up at the time, and not about the quality of her songs. Those complaints came out later.

And how much of SYW does she not like? Sometimes Stevie gets a bee in her bonnet about something in particular, & then over time that single bee grows into an entire hive, & the next thing you know, we're all being attacked by killer African bees.

Every now and then, but mostly for just one or two songs here or there at any one time. I was really digging "Tusk" and "Say Goodbye" the other night.

Yes, most of my listening these days has been Guided By Voices. It's a Dayton thing, you wouldn't understand. Actually, most people in Dayton don't understand, either.

Well, I think it's safe to say she likes Rumours, except I think she is mad at IDWTK. She has made Lindsey thinks that she likes Tusk now. I don't know if she does. I do know that if the McVies came up to him and said that they also really love Tusk, he would probably just skip the act of dying and ascend into heaven, he'd be so pleased with himself.

In that 5 words thread, I was thinking how Angel is so superb, because I wanted to quote every line of the song. And it's kind of funny to me that Stevie has not really seemed to love Angel as much as her fans do. She doesn't dislike it, but she doesn't seem to take it that serioiusly. I know that she is proud of Sara, but I don't know that she thinks Angel is exceptional. Overall though, I think she's proud of her Tusk songs, if not the whole album.

I guess she likes Mirage. Don't think she likes Tango. As for the White Album (although, to soothe Chili's woes, I think that I will also call it Fleetwood Mac '75), I think she doesn't feel fully represented on that album and Crystal was old to her by then (that meddlesome John), so that's probably not her favorite either.

Hmmm. SYW. I don't know if she likes any of it. I'd like to hear her talk more about the songs in detail, but Thrown Down is one of her greater triumphs IMO. When she points out how Lindsey was feeling up her leg and telling her he was awed by Ilume, she didn't add that she felt like smacking him silly for ruining the song, so she might like that one. Is it a sign that she thought about doing DR and RTTG live that maybe those are among her favorites?

I don't really know how Stevie feels. SYW was the single because it was most pop. But does Stevie like it? People say that SYW (the song) is not really her, but I think she wrote it that way on purpose to fulfill Christine's role and I appreciate that, her ability to write "as needed." I also think the lyrics are piercing, if not opaque. "Something in you brought out something in me that I've never been since." Whoa. My heart is all tied up. Plus, I wasn't exactly impervious to the way she and Lindsey got nose to nose during the live performances of that tune.

And the lasso dance -- well, the song that brought us that must be revered.

So, my concern is already how far Lindsey was ready to go to make this work. When someone says, "You can't have me unless you take my BFF,"

Michele

Reading this about you can't have me unless you take my BFF actually reminded me of Lindsey's ultimatum to FM about bringing in Stevie into the band. It was a package deal. I kind of see the same type of similarities here in a way.

Yes, except Lindsey had no previous relationship with FM, let alone one that pre-dated his relationship with the BFF. You know, I never liked the story about them asking Christine if she could get along with another woman in the band. Obviously, I think Christine had to be consulted before Lindsey and Stevie joined, but I never liked the notion that Mick assumed that Christine would have more trouble with Stevie joining than with Lindsey, as if women might automatically have a problem. That annoyed me. He should have asked Lindsey if he had any plans on sleeping with Jenny, because that is, apparently, a deal breaker for him and the 2 men might have as much conflict as the 2 women. Anyway . . .

Still, I bring it up because I think you raise an interesting point about that time in the band. There, Mick was not the one making the ultimatum. He, Christine and John were together no matter what. The question was who would join them. Here, it's a little different. Last we heard, Stevie was saying that she, Mick, Lindsey and John were NOT going to be together, unless they did something that she wanted. So, that's the contrast. Mick was consulting with his bandmates to expand the band and Stevie was telling the guys she isn't even going to be part of the band unless it expands.

Still, Sheryl's involvement can be a little less than band member. She did mention singing on FM songs, but she also said "collaborate." If she was going to be a part of FM maybe she would have used a different term that implied a merger or partnership. A collaboration seems like something that is less than totally uniting the artist with the band. Although, come to think of it, Lindsey has described himself as collaborating with Stevie (on Gypsy) so . . . I don't know.

I wonder if Sheryl thought her comment would be carried on all the wires and mentioned in 100s of newspapers -- not to mention analyzed -- across the world or if it was just a casual aside and she didn't even realize people would have inquiries about it.

Imagine if all Sheryl had to do is go, "Hey Lindsey! LOVE Tusk, especially love..." and then go on to name all nine of his songs, grin, slap him on the back and walk away. They would be golden. ;)

That's exactly what I was referring to back in post 163--Steuart Smith was used by the Eagles in that same manner. He isn't "an Eagle" any more than I suspect Sheryl Crow would be a member of FM on this NEW Fleetwood Mac album. This said, I suspect Sheryl will at least get a picture in the insert of the cd, maybe not the cover, and she'll probably be paid better than Steuart, because she's got a large following of her own and will help fill seats. Poor Steuart got a paycheck, a mention on the cd, including writing credits, but no pic. He has been playing and touring for them since 2001 and he still hasn't gotten wings. With all this news, with all the hand wringing and concern about the impact Sheryl could have positively or negatively on unique balancing act of the band, I think it's AMAZING that now there is finally talk of a new album coming out, rather than just a fairwell tour.

Ditto on the Sheryl Crow comments to the media. If she wasn't authorized for this stuff to come out, her comments spread like wildfire across the internet. Makes you think people are already excited that something NEW is coming, even if it's only one internet website coping the info from another.

So, I think she made the final ultimatum on that issue as well and that's why he said he couldn't afford to do the double album because he couldn't pay for the extra songs (over 12) if he wasn't going to be getting tour money to cover it.

. . . .

No one, not even Lindsey, ever said that Stevie refused to do a full tour if it was released as a double album. In fact after Lindsey agreed to take a financial hit if necessary, it seemed that the entire band were far more comfortable and agreeable with the idea.

What Lindsey did say in Destiny Rules was "if there was even a chance" that Stevie might not want to tour beyond the initial 40 dates, then he couldn't afford it. He stated that, in order to be able to recoup his losses, the band would have to do a "much longer tour" and record another album and tour again. He never said she wasn't going to do a full tour, it was a "what if" scenario.

Also - for all we know, when they came together initially, their managers or they negotiated the 40 city tour as part of the package and then once the idea of a double record came up, that "deal" was revisited.

In the end, it is all speculation on our part. And, even if they (all of them) say something, people tend to disbelieve it and insert their own beliefs. But, it is fun to talk about.

That annoyed me.I'm with you somewhat. My band experience is that men are equally likely to rub one another the wrong way. But this wasn't really Mick's notion -- it was Christine's herself. She said in that old radio interview: "Mick came up to me & said, 'How do you feel about another woman in the band?' It could have been catastrophe if we'd not got on." So Chris, apparently based on her experience or perhaps what she witnessed in another band, seems to have been the one who thought that two women (specifically) had better like each other before they join the same band.

I'm not sure she'd play the intermediary, but at least now Stevie doesn't look like a clandestine in a boys club. I think having Crow in the Mac is a very good news, Stevie now might feel more encouraged to write for the band, since she knows she could have a stronger support in the production phase.

Besides, I'm sure this must have been the condition to have Stevie back (clever girl ).

He stated that, in order to be able to recoup his losses, the band would have to do a "much longer tour" and record another album and tour again. No one, not even Lindsey, needed to say it. When the double album was a single album, Stevie did agree to an extended tour. Obviously, Lindsey only thought "there was even a chance" that Stevie wouldn't do a full tour because she didn't commit to a full one until after he ditched the double album scenario, which was the basis for most of the differences they discussed during Destiny Rules. SYW is a single and voila, he cut the album and got his full tour. Funnily enough, the whole notion of a shortened tour didn't even surface until after the band had been struggling with him over a double album for months without progress.

And the thing about the double album is, according to what Lindsey said in the car, is that Mick promised it to him. It's not something that Lindsey just demanded once production started. It's something that they told him they would do all along and then they didn't. So he felt that once he had invested all of his time, they were changing the rules of the game.

To salvage the double album, thinking that there would be a full tour, he said he'd pay for the extra songs. Then, only after he made this offer to pay, came another change in plans and he finally had no choice but to scrap the double album notion altogether.

We saw the way they play each other throughout Destiny Rules -- as when Lindsey delayed in signing the sound engineering contract -- which made me wish the documentary had focused on some of their other conflicts because, while the problem-solving techniques left a lot to be desired, they were intriguing and revealed a lot about band dynamics.

Ditto on the Sheryl Crow comments to the media. If she wasn't authorized for this stuff to come out, her comments spread like wildfire across the internet.

Well, she's doing the promotional rounds for her album and she will have to elaborate soon (like this week probably) because everyone is going to be asking her about it. The Mac could keep mum for months, but she can't, since she's out there. So, I guess we'll know more soon. But then again, she may not have more to tell. She did say, "we'll see what happens," as if the details have yet to be worked out.

When the double album was a single album, Stevie did agree to an extended tour.

Which band member said that and when did they say it?

Maybe she hadn't committed because she wasn't sure if she wanted to be on the road that long with Lindsey, period.

And, if you want to go by gossip from mostly reliable sources and supposition, La Nicks agreed to the third leg of the SYW tour to help LB out financially.

And the thing about the double album is, according to what Lindsey said in the car, is that Mick promised it to him. It's not something that Lindsey just demanded once production started. At the beginning of the doc, LB told SN "if you keep writing songs like that, we'll make this a double album yet." Obviously the idea of a double album was still up in the air, even before SN arrived. Didn't sound like LB was promised anything.

In the end, I think it is important to remember all of this is stringing together of what relatively little we actually know. And, of that pool of interviews, etc., it is important to remember the context. For example, the DR doc. likely had some staging and cagey editing  So, little of this likely is actually what went down over the long run.

Good observation. Even though I don't 100 percent agree with Sheryl being in the band (if that is the case), I can see where Stevie is coming from. Sheryl I believe understands where Stevie is coming from musically and would hopefully make the production process go smoother for Stevie if she had an ally on her side. Stevie is indeed clever and maybe she had this in the back of her mind way back a couple of years ago when she handed Lindsey the set list. Stevie definitely knows how to play the game, and I think won this strategic move, but time will tell the whole story.

Really? THIS is it? 9/11, the various genocides in Africa, or even the price at the gas pumps aren't as bad?

In my mind, this isn't even the worse thing that ever happened to Fleetwood Mac. BTW, that award still goes to Peter Green quitting the band. It would have killed most bands, but Mick and John have a great survival instict. Fleetwood Mac finds a way to get the band back on the road, and it's BAD news for fans? Very interesting.

golddustwoman77

I mean, it is going to change the whole dynamics of the band!

You say that like it's a BAD thing. At this stage, Fleetwood Mac's dynamic NEEDS changing. It's about f-ing time the dynamic changed, even in a small way. They're whole history has been about constant dynamic changes. When Christine joined after Peter Green left; when Bob Welch joined after Jeremy flew the coop; when Stevie & Lindsey joined when Welch burned out; even the Time crew shook the cage (I enjoyed them immensely but I'm obviously in the minority)

I said it like it was a bad thing, because I think it is a bad thing. The examples you gave were mainly back when people were coming and going with very little time in between new line ups. Therefore, it wasn't as big a deal if the line up changed. This line up has been a staple for 33 years basically, minus Time years--which was a critical and commerical flop. That is much, much longer than any other line up. This is the Fleetwood Mac that most people know and love; this is the line-up that has seen the greatest success. For example, you wouldn't change the line-up of the Rolling Stones at this late date. I could give many examples of other bands that you just wouldn't change their dynamics. It would be suicide. Why mess with their overall success and tarnish their image now?! This isn't what I want Fleetwood Mac's last hoorah to be. I don't want this to be the note they go out on, especially if that last note includes Sheryl Crow?! I used to be a fan of hers early on, but, IMO, she hasn't had a good album since the Globe Sessions which was in 1998. The last several albums have been getting worse by the album, bordering on the edge of corny in some instances. It seems to me that she needs Fleetwood Mac more than they need her. Fleetwood Mac is an iconic band that Sheryl Crow can ride to revive her floundering career. Well, I'm sorry, but I'm just not for it. I say save Fleetwood Mac's legacy, not Sheryl Crow's career.

Which band member said that and when did they say it?

The chronology set forth in the Destiny Rules documentary said it, along with the fact that we got an extended tour -- and a single album.

Maybe she hadn't committed because she wasn't sure if she wanted to be on the road that long with Lindsey, period.

Maybe, but the length of the tour didn't come up until after the extended battle about the double album.

At the beginning of the doc, LB told SN "if you keep writing songs like that, we'll make this a double album yet." Obviously the idea of a double album was still up in the air, even before SN arrived. Didn't sound like LB was promised anything.

Sounded like he was promised quite a bit and he was upset that Mick had gone back on his word. He felt that Mick had betrayed him and, worse, Mick was not even acknowledging that he had done so. He felt that Mick had dangled a carrot in front of his face, reeled him in and then taken it away, which led to his whole rant about not having a single ally in the band. He didn't just start pushing for a double album, it was something that he understood (reasonably understood, mistakenly understood, I don't know) he was getting from the outset. Then he wasn't.

And, if you want to go by gossip from mostly reliable sources and supposition, La Nicks agreed to the third leg of the SYW tour to help LB out financially.

I thought the tour had to be extended as payback for earlier venues, when they hadn't sold as many tickets as they were supposed to have sold earlier. However, your gossip jives with what we saw in Destiny Rules. There were 6 additional songs on the album and they were probably paid for by Lindsey. I'm sure he welcomed as much tour money as possible. I often wonder if UTS cost him money out of his own pocket as well.

Who knows in the end. But, if La Nicks did agree to a third leg to help him out, that suggests that she was not such a beyotch that people make her out to be. Again, I think that they originally agreed to a certain number of dates (say 40) (which is pretty standard) -- then the idea of the double record came up somewhere early in the process and it was not dismissed until later. I think the tour extension was a negotiating point because they knew a double record could be be financially viable without it. It certainly would have been for me.

I do know they did make tons of money off of the tour and merch. though.

I guess renting a house in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the world to record a record and then taking a year or so to record it does come with a payback, esp. when said record sells only 800,000 copies and you have leased a private BBJ and hiring essentially two other band as a back up for you on your tour

I did find it interesting that he sold what was touted as his recently completed dream home and where he had lived for two plus decades for somewhere around $20 million after the tour and moved to a much less expensive and exclusive neighborhood. Who knows - maybe he did that to finance UTS and the resulting tour, which were critical but not financial successes.

Well, they were not even PLANNED to be financial successes. So he deliberately took the financial risks himself. I don't think it was an expensive album to make- nor that is was an expensive tour to do. My idea is that he didn't lose or gain big amounts of money. Not in such amounts that he had to sell the house for it. And the SYW tour must have made him some cash, even after paying all bills.

I think LB went back to FM because he has nowhere else to go to get his music out. He all but said so when he said that Warners essentially shelved his solo project in 1999-2000, which is when FM started again

I don't know. SYW certainly sold relatively few copies considering the expense of making it. But, the two or so year tour should have paid for that and given the five tons of money. All I know is the selling of that house was a strange thing to these eyes.

Stevie agreeing to a longer tour suggests that she likes money just as much as the next guy. Mick got Lindsey into the tour by promising him a double album and Lindsey thought a long tour would help pay for the expense of that double album. I doubt he would have had that preconception in the first place, if he contemplated only a 40 date tour. Then he learned that Stevie was hedging on a long tour and he gave up the idea of a double album.

As for UTS, yes, it could have cost Lindsey money because I know that OOTC cost him money. But that's what he does. He spends money to get his music out, as his willingness to foot the extra SYW bill establishes. I doubt that he was poverty-stricken however, as Stevie is the one talking about how much money he had after the Dance tour. He didn't say he didn't need to reunite with FM for the money. She said it. So, I doubt he spent everything Stevie claimed he had in just 6 years.

I did find it interesting that he sold what was touted as his recently completed dream home and where he had lived for two plus decades for somewhere around $20 million after the tour and moved to a much less expensive and exclusive neighborhood. They said that the house they moved out of was not conducive to family life. Big Love made it clear to the world that it was, indeed, the house on the hill and maybe the layout wasn't exactly kid friendly. At any rate, it was at the height of the real estate market and if someone was nutty enough to pay 21.5 million for a house that Lindsey paid less than 1/4 of that amount for, then I think he was wise to capitalize on the offer, take his money and run. I don't think it was the mark of financial need. His current house is worth about 5.5 million, so, in moving, I don't think he actually had to lower his standards all that much.

Lindsey said that on Destiny Rules. All you have to do is look at the thing and the various band conversations all the way through (instead of getting snippets extracted) to see the progression.

And I'm confused, because you're the one who brought up Destiny Rules in this thread. You obviously did it to make a point initially, but now you claim that DR is unreliable and no one will ever know what actually happened. I agree with you there, but I think looking at the documentary and band interviews, which took place before the tour and which was released by the band itself or (in the case of interviews) published in reputable periodicals, is a better way of piecing together what happened than repeating undocumented gossip from unnamed sources, allegedly whispered at unspecified times and places.

I am not saying she does not. I am saying that she may have originally said she would do 40 or so dates with FM because she wanted to do another solo thing, take some time off, etc. So, when the dynamic changed, she reentered negotiations. This does not make her a bad person.

Ummm - they designed it - it was a brand new house and in no way resembled the house LB lived in all those years. That house, I believe was damaged in an earthquake. So, of course it was kid friendly seeing as how it was built when they had children. So, I am not buying that

As for the cost of the house. To build and furnish that house would have been well over $10 million. So, let's say he got $20 million for it. Take away the $1.2 million commissioner of 6 or so percent - then the cap. gains tax would take another 20-25% (I am unsure of the rate at that time). So, he likely made around $5-7 million off of the sale, which hardly seems worth the effort considering the lessening of lifestyle and when juxtaposed to the wealth he is said to have  That is why it seems fishy to me.

Also, $5 million house in Bel Air or any mostly comparable surrounding area is not that great of a house when compared to the house on the hill.

I also don't think she backed out of a longer tour to help Lindsey financially. Although I think she has actively helped Mick (and John too, although there's no reason to think John is cramped for money) and has done some things for Fleetwood Mac, just so that Mick could make money.

I was looking at some pre-tour press regarding tour length and saw that 40-60 dates were contemplated. And Mick said they had enough material for a duoble album in June 2002, which is probably when he told Lindsey he could have one, as Lindsey later said Mick had said it in DR.

Mick Fleetwood mellows at 55 Former hard-living rocker changes diapers - and his lifestyle

SUE ZEIDLER Reuters

LOS ANGELES Drummer Mick Fleetwood, who turned 55 Monday, finds himself in the odd position of changing diapers at middle age even as he toils in the studio with members of the veteran rock band he co-founded in the late 1960s.

The tall, lanky, British-born musician divides his time these days between working on a new Fleetwood Mac album, dabbling in various entrepreneurial activities and raising twin baby girls with his wife of about 10 years, Lynn.

During a telephone interview, Fleetwood said that both his creative and parenting skills had improved with age.

He also said he and his bandmates are more at peace with themselves and each other, in stark contrast to the old days when Fleetwood Mac endured bitter internal rivalries and turmoil as the group churned out hit after hit.

"Our last outing was better than ever," he said, referring to Fleetwood Mac's 1997 reunion album, "The Dance," which sold more than 4 million copies in the United States and paved the way for a successful U.S. tour.

"It has to be happy. We don't want to go back into the dark ages of Fleetwood Mac, when it was way too crazy, not all that happy. We're so much over that. We came out on the other side, survivors and incredibly intact, and it's very conducive to the creative process," he said.

The new album reunites Fleetwood with three members of the band's most popular incarnation - bass player and British co-founder John McVie, along with American songwriters and former lovers Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Sitting this one out is McVie's ex-wife, singer-keyboardist Christine McVie, who has retired and is living in England.

Don't stop

The band, which shot to fame in the 1970s at the peak of its progression from British blues combo to California rock institution, has already produced enough material in the past 18 months to fill a double CD, Fleetwood said. The material was recorded in a Los Angeles house leased by the band.

Fleetwood expects the band to have the album out by early next year and to follow up with a tour in April 2003. The band also is releasing a greatest hits package around Christmas 2002, he said.

Fleetwood said there are "mumblings" from time to time of contributions by Christine McVie, but that the remaining four members have been moving ahead at full steam. In some ways, he said, the Buckingham/Nicks creative connection has been rekindled in the absence of Christine McVie.

"It's a major thing for Stevie and Lindsey. They came in as a couple, and in a strange way it's come full circle. Now that Christine is not in the mix, the Buckingham/Nicks chemistry is back, and they're having the chance to live out some of the things and energies that couldn't exist in the past 27 years," he said.

Fleetwood, who has two grown daughters as well as a grandson, is now back to putting diapers on his 4-month-old twins, Tessa and Ruby.

He said that being an older dad has definite advantages.

"It's way more interesting the second time around and when you're older. You're more focused," he said. "I was on the road when the others were younger. I am from memory a lot more hands on than I was. And it's a great benefit that I'm not on the road."

Of course, next year could be different when he plans to take the band back on the road, with the families in tow.

"With all the children, it will be like a band of gypsies," he said, joking that he expected everyone will want the babies and nannies "way in the back of the plane." *

[Then this September 2002 blurb from the Milwaukee Sentinel]

Fleetwood Mac will embark on a 40- to 60-date North American tour of arenas and amphitheaters in April 2003, according to Billboard.com. Christine McVie will sit out the tour, which will feature Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham and John McVie. Dates have not been announced. A new studio album will be released next spring, and a 36-track, two-CD greatest-hits package, "The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac," is due Oct. 15.

How can it erode the foundation, when I wasn't even making a point about Destiny Rules here? You were. You were the one comparing that period of FM to Sheryl Crow's addition. Because you said that Lindsey said he would take back his master reels, so I guess your argument was that he made ultimatums then just like Stevie is apparently making ultimatums now.

However, Lindsey said he could always take back his masters because Mick backed out of the deal for a double album. And Lindsey does say that Mick reneged on his promise in Destiny Rules. That's not my opinion. That's what Lindsey says.

The fact was, Lindsey didn't get the double album. Yet, the band did get his songs, so he was out leveraged by the others in the end and I don't see how that compares to the Sheryl Crow issue at hand.

^ Didn't you just post this earlier?

Only you, Chili. You know damn well nobody would see this thread if it were posted there.

I can't believe I'm saying this. I agree.

That whore.

You're right, of course, that's the only reason it could possibly be.

Oh, so you've talked to Mick & John & found it not to be the case this time?

Agreed.

Ah, see, but then the newcomer would be accused of, how was it put earlier, jock sniffing. Riding the Mac's coattails. Can't win with you unless they ask a former member of the band to join, I guess. God forbid things move forward.

Hand over the spotlight? How is she handing over the spotlight? Mama can hold her own, regardless of who's currently in better voice. It obviously wasn't an issue on the TISL tour, so why would it be now?

Well said.

You still listen to the band?

Um.

I'm not pissed at you, but I think you're wrong.

Why not?

Wow. You seem to be taking this really seriously - and personally. Just an observation.

well someone is, and it's not me. I just expressed myself, but I'm not being bitchy.

Exactly.

Yessir, you're correct. There have been rumblings about this since 2001. Just hasn't been anything recently, and I think it took most of us by surprise since Sheryl & Stevie haven't been as publicly connected as they had in the past.

Ok, so you think I'm wrong??? Well that is your opinion just like what I posted is mine. #1, I was NOT I REPEAT NOT, talking bed about Stevie singing live, I was talking about Sheryl Crow. #2, I am very well aware that sheryl has been around since my freshman year in high school and I have been listening to her ever since. i like her music, but with her being in fleetwood mac in my eyes just isn't a good idea. her voice doesn't sound like it should be in the band. And plus, to be honest, I don't want her in the band. But I don't work with the band and I don't make the rules, so I can't help how I feel, but I will say that it's not something that I want to see happen, and from being a fan since the age of 5, it's hard to let go of Christine. I am sorry that i pissed people off with my blog, but hey aren't we supposed to say what we feel and our opinions? Opinions and the truth can hurt, but don't "read between my lines", when I post something, "READ" it. Don't read what you want to see, read it for what it is. Everytime I post something anywhere, people don't read my words they read what they see and take it way out of line. (Just like when you see a coupon that says 20% off, but you don't bother to read the excusionsand fine print) You only read what you want to see.
I am not bad mouthing Sheryl Crow at all, I just get a little aggravated that she is always clinging to the Mac and Nicks. AND YES, I know that she has worked with other artists. DUH! But I am not talking about other artists I am talking about Mac and Nicks. I can't point you to the recent article where she is in peoples faces about being friends with Nicks, but I will say, you see plenty of photos online, and I do have articles thank you very much. And it is NOT my opinion about the rubbing in peoples faces it is a fact! If you want to think that it is my opinion, that' is your opinion. All I can say is that I do like Sheryl and you know what, If I were friends with someone as wonderful as Stevie, I would talk about her all the time. Let's just wait and see what happens, maybe it will work out, but if it does it does, if not, not:shrug:

. . . And it is NOT my opinion about the rubbing in peoples faces it is a fact! If you want to think that it is my opinion, that' is your opinion . . . .

I think that she and La Nicks are or were and are again good friends is the fact. That you see it as SC rubbing peoples' faces in it is the opinion part  In other words, others may see those pics in the magazines and those mentions in interviews as innocent and factual with no face rubbing. They are interpreting the fact just as you are.

Reality check. Nobody here knows what anyone in the band truly thinks or feels about anything, past or present. We can assume things from interviews, documentaries, rumours, inside sources, etc. But none of us really know ****. It's all opinion & theories. Just wanted to point that out.

No, DR was the thing where LB says to La Nicks "keep writing songs like that and we'll make this a double album yet," which implies that a double album was obviously discussed, but was NOT a "promise" made to LB in order to get him to record with the band :wavey:

It doesn't imply that to me. It implies that Lindsey was scrambling to make Stevie return to the double album concept that she, Mick and her two managers were abandoning, as they all discussed in the documentary.

Lindsey perceives it as a promise having been made to him. Maybe not by Stevie, but certainly by Mick.

I listened to Destiny Rules again this morning. In it, Mick confirms that he endorsed a double album "way back with Lindsey" and Mick realizes that Lindsey now blames him for changing his mind, but Mick doesn't see it as betrayal.

In his car in Destiny Rules Lindsey says that he wouldn't even have joined in on the SYW project, at least not with that group of songs, if Mick hadn't agreed on a double album with him and now Mick has done a "180" and Lindsey can't understand why Mick doesn't see his flip flop as "hurtful" or even "profound."

But I was not arguing that FM owed Lindsey a double album anyway. In order to prove that Lindsey issues ultimatums, you said that Lindsey threatened to take his masters back and I said that he made that threat because Mick reneged on the double album. In his car, Lindsey said he would not have agreed to the album at all (or at least not with that group of songs) if he knew it wasn't going to be a double.

He didn't think that the band could make as much of a statement with 12 songs as it could with 20 and, given the nature of his songs, he thought they needed to release a lot of them -- which is why, faced with the prospect of a single album, he didn't know if he still wanted his songs to be released at all. So, he didn't issue an ultimatum, but he did say that he did own the master to his songs, threatening to take them back. As it turned out, he didn't. Michele

I saw this as a way of putting Mick in his place. Mick doesn't write songs, and if there is an Achilles heel, that's it.

The talking-behind-the-back of Mick and Ray Lindsey was petty...and Ray's laughing at Lindsey when Mick quotes Lindsey's view about the music how some obscure artist was content to make the statement and not get rich was petty... (Lindsey, would YOU like to live in a 3 room apartment?) The DR documentary showed that FM is a big Chessboard and each piece has its own calculated move.

I am glad that SYW had all 18 songs because it gave us a buffet, instead of a predetermined menu of only one dish.

I don't know if the band pulls in the reins on Lindsey, but I do know that I like his solo albums better than FM albums. He is more of a risk taker and doesn't go for the commercial sound. The song COME is so haunting (as are its lyrics) and I was suprised FM did it on stage...

With Record Companies, LB has to use FM to get his songs out there. He said in the Charlie Rose Interview that with his solo work he doesn't sell as many units as FM does....so much of his solo (GOS album) became SYW.

Sometimes I wish he'd post new songs on his website and do a "pay-for-download" thing ....

True and untrue. Ofcourse there could NEVER have been hard promises between two members: that band has more people in it. But LB said clearly that Mick did a 180 as the process developped. And Mick underlines that not much further in DR. And I don't know the quote anymore, but Lindsey and Mick's initial shared enthousiasm for a double-album made LB eager to do the project. Let's face it: he had a truckload of songs ready for years that he wanted to bring out: For a big part WITH The FM-tandem on them. OFCOURSE they were going for a double-album initially.

...until Miss Commercial Visionary flew in to drop a four song tape with two good ones and two crappy, and later came back to do some vocals.

Spinner (New York)

Move over Stevie: Sheryl Crow is planning to join Fleetwood Mac.

"We definitely have plans for collaborating in the future, and we’ll see what happens," Crow tells Spinner. As to when fans might hear those collaborations, she says, "I think that’s going to be next year."

And what songs would she ideally like to perform onstage with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham? "I’d love to do ’The Chain’ and ’Second Hand News,’" she says. "There’s so many great songs that I absolutely love, and just to get to sing harmonies on them is going to be a thrill."

For Crow, who is just beginning to tour in support of her recently released ’Detours’ album, the opportunity to join the legendary group (and fill the shoes of Christine McVie, who retired from touring in 1998), is a chance to work with her close friend Nicks. Perhaps more important, it will help keep the band alive, as Nicks had previously gone on record as saying she was unwilling to carry on Fleetwood Mac without McVie, who had been one of the constants of the often-evolving group since she joined in the early ’70s...

How long will the tour sets last once she in 2 Hours ?

I'll only accept Sheryl if she dresses in 80s era Christine McVie clothes for each and every show and between songs speaks in an English accent.

Edit: I'll also accept her if she dresses as 60s-era Peter Green. And speaks in an English accent.

I'll only accept her if she amputates both legs at the knees plays slide guitar and sings Elvis tunes and Elmore James covers.

I am really upset that sheryl MIGHT join Fleetwood Mac....It just doesn't fit...but i am even more upset that the one interview with "Spinner" stated that she would "fill" the shoes of Christine McVie...I hope and I know all you guys, my fleetwood mac brothers and sisters know that no one ever could evevevevevever fill in or replace Chris. thank you for listeningt o my ranting and raving!! please message me your thoughts, I am very upset.

OMG, please NO!!!! The entire dynamic of Fleetwood Mac would be ruined IMO. I'm not a fan of Crow and it would just taint the whole beauty of the Mac. :distress::distress:

That already happened when Christine RETIRED.

It just doesn't fit...

Well, we know Christine is done. My attitude is that there aren't too many other women out there today making credible pop music that actually gets played on the radio. Sheryl is one of them.

Like Christine, I don't see Sheryl as being the type who would need another woman to go on tour. I could easily see her just being one of the guys.

If nothing else, Sheryl has worked with Eric Clapton, which makes her even more appropriate for Fleetwood Mac. (Hey, I coulda said she had sex with an ex-Bluesbreaker, but I was trying to be civilized.) She has worked with the likes of Clapton, Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Henley, and FLEETWOOD MAC. I respect that, even though her break-out was in 1994, she chooses to associate with THAT generation of rock. Yeah, I'll still miss Christine, but that ship has sailed. It's time to move on, don't you know.

but i am even more upset that the one interview with "Spinner" stated that she would "fill" the shoes of Christine McVie...I hope and I know all you guys, my fleetwood mac brothers and sisters know that no one ever could evevevevevever fill in or replace Chris.

No, but then the band shouldn't have to fade away too if they don't want to. Having another woman in the band is important, for whatever reason, to Stevie.

To the people who aren't happy with this (not including the Christine die-hards), by chance do you skip over the Christine songs anyway? The reason I ask is it seems a lot of people are interjecting qualities they like about Lindsey or Stevie into who they would choose for the third vocalist. Really, in my mind, there's only one other lady in rock that remotely reminds me of Christine, and that's Carole King. I don't see her joinging the band anytime soon, either. (Though, the thought of Mick and John grooving on "I Feel The Earth Move" is tempting...) In any event, get Return Of The Grievous Angel: Tribute To Gram Parsons. If her duet with Emmylou Harris of "Juanita" doesn't give you gooseflesh, then you have no soul.
