early on:
the mamas & the papas
the fifth dimension
the beatles
the beach boys
the monkees
three dog night
the rolling stones

then i tacked on stuff like:
abba
jefferson airplane
the guess who
janis joplin
carole king
the grateful dead
foreigner (heeee)

etc. etc. etc.

my mom is big time into antiques... the majority of my childhood was spent in antique shops, thrift stores, yard sales, tag sales, etc. in order to get me to STFU and stop the "can we go now", she would send me off to look through records and pick out ones that i wanted. other than being able to identify names of artists or songs that i'd heard on oldies radio (thats all daddy ever listened to in the car), i'd just pick out the ones that looked cool. as a result, i have a effing boatload of eclectic records. they range from unbelievably awesome to embarassingly bad.

:O

I hadn't heard that! Holy cow.

Not trying to thread jack. But, I'll say that Katrina was just bad all around. I have a lot of people on the gulf, in New Orleans, and such as (the iraq and asia and such as ). That was a really bad time. Plenty of people still aren't back on their feet completely.

my favorite album was amy grant's heart in motion.

I listened to my Heart in Motion tape so much that it wore out  I begged my mom to buy me a new one - and she did.

The first song I ever remember noticing, liking, and buying (by myself, with my allowance) was:

You can imagine my parents' shock when a year or so later, after completely wearing out Debby and the Grease soundtrack, I bought this at the local Kmart:

From the time I found music until I was forced off of them, I was all about the 45. So I can't say that I listened to one gnere or band. I just had a gaggle of 45's. From the Muppet theme song to Hall & Oats. My first real record was the ONJ Physical album, and my first casette was Air Supply. Yea, that's right! haha.
For 45's, I guess I had a bulk of 70's R&B/Disco. Ring My Bell & We Are Family were my 1st 45's, so I loved that kind of music. I started collecting/adoring Stevie & the Mac in 83, so they were the 1st ones that really had me buying multiple things by the same band. Otherwise my choice of music was ALL 80's. LOTS of Missing Person! LOVE the Bozzio. Haircut100, ABC, etc. Then I found Siouxsie, and well, it's been "alternative" ever since save SN/FM.

I saw this video once, ages and ages ago, but never saw it again and it never appeared on any of Tom Petty's official VHS or DVD releases, so I seriously thought I had only imagined its existence.

And now that I've seen it again, I'm... I'm speechless. It's so wrong in so many ways. But damn I love this song. Incidentally, the album it's from - Southern Accents - has always been my favorite Petty album. I wore the hell out of that tape as a kid, too.

My first major band obsession was The Cranberries, from around 8 or 9 to 13 or so. The first CD I recieved as a gift was Ace of Base "The Sign" and the first CD I bought was No Doubt "Tragic Kingdom".

Being a little kid in the early 90s, my mom and I would listen to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, R.E.M. etc. She raised me good  I will never forget driving down the road singing "Shiny Happy People", and I always hear her voice doing Kate Pierson's part when I listen to the song :) (same with the chorus of "Interstate Love Song").

I got into the Mac and Stevie around 10. Of course I was a total Spice Girls fanatic in the Spice Era- 1998 or so? I loved Alanis Morissette and got into Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Mechant, and other "Lilith"-type fare a few years later. I went through a period in middle school when I listened to really ****ty music like Lincoln Park and Nsync  but my musical tastes were back on track by high school :)

The first five years of my life, when I still lived with my mother, I was forced to listen to various soundtracks such as Grease, Saturday Night Fever and Fame. Then I moved in with my dad and I got exposed to music that I still listen to, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Dylan, etc, etc. A few years after that my mother came into the picture again and the likes of Celine Dion, Ace of Base, Roxette and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack came through the speakers. Then I hit puberty full force and I listened to the Backstreet Boys for a few years (I missed the boat on NKOTB  ) until I finally saw the light about ten years ago and entered Fleetwood Mac-Ville. ;)

Well, Starting at a very young age, my parents oldie music played in the car.
Grateful Dead
Rolling Stones
Beatles

nuff said.

Then at around 8 years old [idk, when did Bring it On come out? 2001?] well from 1992-the year BiO came out, at that age, I became OBSESSED with that soundtrack, mainly the version of 'Mickey' on it. More about that song later.

Then in the 5th grade, I discovered what would be the second worst of all of my musical ventures. Boy Bands. Backstreet Boys, and NSync. [I wasnt even alive during NKOTBs major fame, but my cousin used to be obsessed with them lol.] Later moving to Britney Spears. I never liked Christina though. Or Jessica, or Mandy, just Britney.
I actually saw Britney live once, not a bad show.
The Ateens were always a favorite of mine too. at like 10 years old you have to expect someone to listen to teenyboper music. [Also saw them live, it was probably the worst show I went to....ever.]

Then move into the 6th grade, I think that this is what saved me musically. Maroon 5. All the Way. Songs About Jane. This Love Playing on Vh1 all the time. I couldnt stay away. and the rediculously hot lead singer didnt hurt either. Saw them live in 7th grade, 2004, not a bad show I must say. Still not the best [more on that later] but damn good.

Then in the 7th grade I had a mini rap phase [not like hardcore rap, just eminem, and like nelly 'hot in here' that kid of stuff]. that ended as soon as my 'friendship' with certain people ended. but I never gave up on M5.
Even in the 8th grade. m5 all the way. Talking about them was how I met one of my best friends today [no she didnt like them, we argued over if M5 or GreenDay is better. I think I won seeing as she HATES greenday now...].

Somewhere between M5 and the next stage I had an 80s outbreak. 'Whip It' 'Cars' 'Take On Me' 'I Ran' 'Mickey' [by toni basil, not the stupid Bring it On rip offs] 'Tainted Love' 'Come one Eileen' all of those one hit wonders, they were my life at one point.

In about January of 2006, I discovered the Beatles. Again, a renewal you might say. I had to do a project for Social Studies, of someone who changed the world. Who better than the Beatles? Obessessed with them from Jan to August.

Enter July of 2006. Been driving around listening to the radio a lot. Rhiannon comes on the radio, I get explained who it is. later in August of that year my mom and I are eating KFC in a Wendys parking lot [dont ask...] and Go Your Own Way comes on the radio, I had looked up who sang it before, and as soon as I saw Fleetwood Mac, I had to find out more, because this was the 'Rhiannon' band. My mom a self proclaimed FM hater, has a tape by them -.- and I stole it, yep I stole my mothers FM tape. I knew more songs than I thought. The rest was history. I go to songfacts.com, look up stuff, im on wikipedia all day reading more and more about the members, eventually found out that Lindsey was NOT a girl as once thought. and that I shared the same name as one of the band members-Christine. That totally made me love them even more. And as soon as I saw the Gypsy video on Youtube, I was hooked for life.

And now look at me, Im on here all the time, and have no space on my puny 3.7 gig ipod for anything other than my collection of FM songs. Solo, and Group, plus countless live and demos.

I have been a fan for officially a year now, and this is the longest Ive ever liked a bands music besides Maroon 5.
Seeing Lindsey live was the best experience of my life, my seats werent the best ones in the house, but his music means something to me, as does Stevies, and Chris'.

I would give this up for no other music, regardless of what is popular, or is 'easier to dance too' [which isnt really true, but many people my age think so.]

So without liking Maroon 5, who saved me from the Rap Trap, I would never be the Ledgie I am today. :D

I don't see anything - you got to tell me what they were - lol:blob1:

Debby Boone ("You Light Up My Life") was the first one.

If you didn't already guess that Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" was the second, I'll be crushed.

People kept telling me it was creepy. So, I decided to see how everyone felt about psychotic sheep.

Plus, that movie was such a letdown. Mesmerizing in parts, but it suffered a serious Grace Zabriskie deficiency. And Jack Nance (RIP :( ).

When I was very small, my favorite music was the entrance theme for Herr Drosselmeyer from The Nutcracker, composed by Tchaikovsky.

http://ec-129-belliard.scola.ac-paris.fr/archives/chatelet/drosselmeyer.jpg

I had an old long-play record (I know, what's that?) that I played on my kiddie turntable over & over. That music accompanied me in to breakfast, lunch & dinner, plus brushing my teeth. The family must have been sick of it.

Yes! They had a game for PlayStation. You picked a girl, remixed a song, made up a dance routine for it, and recorded it. And it was awesome.

my favorite album was amy grant's heart in motion. i also enjoyed the musical stylings of celine dion, ace of base, and hootie and the blowfish. eat it, haters.

amy Grant. Yikes.

I actually listened to a lot of motion picture soundtracks when I was a kid. I think it was "okay" with my mother at the time because she figured regular radio fare wasnt on them. She didnt like me listening to GNR or other such bands that were on the up and up back then. Then in the early 90s I found myself getting into older stuff like the Police, etc. The first actual CD i bought was in 1991...the Robin Hood soundtrack (you know with that Bryan Adams song)

I won tickets to a Color Me Badd concert in 6th or 7th grade - for being on the honor roll.

Time has chipped away at my Reba love. She scares me now with all of that plastic surgery. Also because of her steadfast support of the Dubya...but let's not go there.

Crystal Gayle has one of the most beautiful voices, imo. Her songs are definitely on the cheesy side, but the purity of her voice makes me love them anyway.

oh man, I was just going to shoot you a PM or something about this. if I ever hated on you for liking ABBA/ABBA in general before, I take it back. I have one of their greatest hits collections and it rules my world. If not for the insanely gorgeous harmonies, then for the music alone. The bassline of "Gimme! Gimme! LAYLOM is my absolute favorite. I just listened to it right before I read this.

The harmonies are what I like most about ABBA, but the music is undeniable. Those guys. The keyboard work. Kills me. I'm looking for an extended version of LAYLOM with more of that ending "organ" part. Benny (I guess it's Benny, anyway) just goes off on that **** and it hits my heart.

All the records are great, srsly, but as far as collections go, the 2 disc Definitive Collection is as good as you could hope for.

oh man. i also love Eagle. the first times i heard it, i wasn't so big on it... but ABBA the Movie totally changed that. best scene in the whole freakin' thing:

Wow! This is gonna show my age...we're talkin' from age 4 through 10 here:
My earliest:
Elvis
Buddy Holly
Chuck Berry
Little Richard
Gene Vincent
Eddie Cochrane
Richie Valens
Bill Haley & The Comets
Carl Perkins
The Rock & Roll Trio (with Billy Burnette's dad & uncle)

Then a bit later:

The Chantays
The Rip-Chords
The Surfaris
Dee Dee Sharp
Dick & Dee Dee
Chubby Checker
Little Eva
Bob Dylan
Peter, Paul & Mary
Pete Seeger
Woody Guthrie
The Beach Boys
The Four Seasons
The Beatles
Petula Clark
The Rolling Stones
The Animals
Gerry & The Pacemakers
Freddie & The Dreamers
The Nashville Teens

Then even a little later:

The Seeds
The Kingsmen
The Trashmen
The Standells
Them
The Byrds

And, just before I turned 11:

Cream

A few months after I turned 11 (which was "The Summer Of Love"):
Fleetwood Mac

So, that was my "Upbringing" musically. Thanks to Eric Clapton & Peter Green touting the blues, I started listening to the masters: Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, BB King, Freddie King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, T-Bone Walker, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, etc.

EDIT: Yep, I knew I'd forget some...all the Motown & Stax artists, too. Plus, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Al Green, too.

Main artists were:

Sonny and Cher, The Jackson 5/The Jacksons. Then, as I reached my late teens, Prince and Fleetwood Mac.

I grew up in the seventies and at first liked contemporary music and artists, but eventually started developing a love for "older" music which would include: Ricky Nelson, Ozzie and Harriet, Elvis, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Motown (with an emphasis on Diana Ross).

I also appreciated my mom's music which would include: Otis Redding, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke . . .
