This took me by surprise, even though he was 81. RIP, Mr. Altman.

I just watched "A Prairie Home Companion," and I loved every frame of it - even the Hohan scenes. I keep seeing a film he did about the last days of Richard Nixon (can't think of the name at the moment). I've been avoiding it, but I'll have to give it a view over the long holiday.

I love MASH, too, but Short Cuts is my favorite.

Aw... I loved his work. Nashville and Pret a Porter were two favorites. He seemed like a nice guy. May he rest in peace.

Yes, it's a sad day, he was a true artist, able to make a masterpiece after another (with a couple of exceptions...) Movies like Mash, Nashville, Short Cuts, The Player, Gosford Park, A Prairie Home Companion, will always be unforgettable worlds of real cinema.

It's a little odd that I have Short Cuts at home from Netflix and had been planning to watch it tonight. I guess it will be a little tribute.

I saw an at-length interview with him probably w/in the past year. He truly did seem like a real artist and his style was so wonderfully unique.

They honestly don't make 'em like that anymore... movies OR directors.

That is unfortunate. I loved Gosford Park. It is a very different breed of murder mystery. I remember Mr. Altman explaining that it was not a "whodunnit", but a "why-it-happened". And that is the harder accomplishment.

I love Gosford Park as well. I didn't know his expanation of the movie but that certainly fits. Now I'll have to watch it again from that point of view.

When Maggie Smith started laughing when the butler deliberately spilled the coffee in Ryan Phillipe's lap - I thought I would die!!!!

She stole every scene and that is saying a bunch with the talent on that screen

Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren were both nominated for best supporting actress for Gosford Park, which is unfortunate only in that fans of the film would have their vote split. Maggie should have won, but Jennifer Connely won for "A Beautiful Mind". Blech. I hated that movie.
