Even if you're not that familiar with their material, there are certain artists that have so many hits or well known songs that there's bound to be one that you like - or really hate. I figured I'd start a thread about Petty since he's currently touring (and neck & neck with Zep in the battle of the bands finale.) Maybe I'll do other artists in the future.

Here are mine. I've tried to narrow it down, because there are a lot:

Favorite:
Insider
American Girl
Square One
You Wreck Me (the corduroy pants/high school dance line is brilliance)
Even the Losers
Yer So Bad
The Apartment Song
You Don't Know How It feels

Least Fave:
Love is a Long Road
Woman In Love (sounds too much like the above)
Jammin' Me (that friggin' Joe Piscopo line bugs the **** out of me.)

Care to share?

I agree on The Apartment song, not that anyone would be surprised. Love the harmonies on that one.

Dylan? Really. Maybe he thought anyone would remember who the hell Piscopo was in 20 years? :p

You know, I don't love that one either. Too much synth for me, maybe.

Shameful. Just shameful. Sigh.

You gotta at least love the video, though. Right?

I've been listening to Tom Petty ALL DAY long, so this thread is totally weird. I very rarely listen to his songs lately unless they pop up on random.

ETA: I managed to forget how much I F-ING LOVE Have Love Will Travel.

Sorry, I've never liked it. I find it too long and boring. But yeah, the video's good.

Nobody else cares to share? :distress: This didn't go as well as I'd hoped. Where's Amber? Eliza? Sharon? Come on, guys, please?

Well after seeing others' lists I realized my Petty fandom is shallow and well I felt a tab embarassed to share but there goes.

I love the entire Wildflowers album...MUCH love for that album plus:

MJ's last Dance
Learning to Fly
Free Falling
Last DJ
Into the Great Wide Open
Won't Back Down
Walls
The Apartment Song (demo w/ Stevie)
Don't Come Around Here No More
Runnin' Down a Dream

There ya go :o

Actually and I'll admit I'm actually not too familiar with a great deal of his stuff - I'm trying to remedy that.

^ But that's why I posted that you don't have to be that familiar with his stuff. I'm hoping to do this with other artists, and I know most people can't have every album by every artist (except Sharon, of course.) So I'm glad you finally posted.

For all I care, someone can say they love "Last Dance With Mary Jane" and not know anything else.

My concert cherry was popped by Tom back in 1977. I've seen him about four or five times live. He is by far one of my all time favorites. My favorites will be the same as others have said. My least favorites might get some fingers blazing at me!

Breakdown (One of the sexiest songs ever)
American Girl
Refugee
Here Comes My Girl
Insider
Apartment Song
Walls (With Lindsey Buckingham on background vocals)
Don't Do Me Like That
Have Love Will Travel (Replaced Breakdown as my all time favorite TP song)
The Last DJ (I am one of the few TP fans who love that album!)
You Don't Know How it Feels
Square One (Most Beautiful Ballad from Tom since Insider)
Even the Losers
The Waiting
Mary Jane's Last Dance
I Won't Back Down
Yer So Bad
Free Fallin'
Into the Great Wide Open

Least Favorite:
Listen to Her Heart
I Need to Know
Running Down a Dream

How 'bout a cheer for all those bad girls
and the boys who play that rock and roll
they love it like you love Jesus
It does the same thing to their soul

Tom Petty from Have Love Will Travel

i have to say that tom petty & the heartbreakers have been my 2nd fav band after fm/stevie all of my life & besides fm/stevie, i believe he is the only other rocker that i have all his released material along w/ boots, live shows & such~ i think he is so talented & i believe it when many people have said that his music is the soundtrack to their lives~
we have a new awesome massive auditorium, that so stupidly instead of just building it a certain way in the beginning after 3 yrs is deciding that they want to add like 2500 more seats(frickin' idiots), & have been shut down all summer, no frickin' shows/concerts here, it is posta be done by the end of this month~ & petty always came here, but as of yet we aren't listed as a city i am sure becuz of the adding of the seats, i have just been praying tho, he will add more dates & come here before the tour is all over, i will be 1 hot mama if i can't make this tour:distress: ~
