A sunny day and my ownership of a digital cam finally collided fortuitously and I got some pics from my hike - I know, who cares? They looked really big, so I resized them, but now some were a bit too small - and I left out some good ones that look crappy small, mainly shots of the bay.
Here are the stairs where my hike starts. I've ridden my bike up the hill until that point.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/antisnark/startofhike.jpg
After I climb those stairs, there are three houses next to each other in a row that I absolutely love - they have weird little decks, and small ledges where window/doors open, and tiny cute pathways, and weird roofs, and stuff.

For those of you familiar with the area (?) here is the Claremont - I am on the trail about halfway up at this point
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/antisnark/Claremont.jpg
Here is a bay shot that looks better bigger - it was hazy over there yesterday, though.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/antisnark/bay1.jpg
The whole thing is pretty steep, but this is the monster, the giant hill right before the top:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/antisnark/hill2.jpg
Here's my favorite house on the hill on the valley on the other side - it's glass, and just perched on the steep hill...
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/antisnark/weirdstiltglasshouse.jpg
Here's the view at the end of my hike, before I go back down the stairs to my bike.

cool. I've always wanted to live in a place like this that actually had some great scenery. And that house looks like what I've always wanted really...I can just imagine the inside.

I know, that house rocks. I mean, the whole part you can see is glass. Of course, in an earthquake...not so cool, probably. Especially as the hayward fault is pretty much right there. Still.

I just got my camera, so I don't know all the lighting settings and everything, hopefully I'll take better ones in the future.
Well, it depends on how far on the trail I want to go. Yesterday I went much farther than usual - from house back to my bike it was 2 hours, then about 10 minutes ride home. To get to the top of that big hill...probably about an hour, maybe a bit more, from my house. It takes me about fifteen minutes to ride up the hill, then about 10 minutes to the trailhead...yeah, probably an hour to the top. The trail goes on forever, though. Also, I do pause because it is so steep - but I see people jogging up that ****!

I was seriously wondering because I like to hike in snow, it's really pretty. Course, I don't live in the snow, if I did I might feel differently I suppose. Old hat and all that.

You've gotta be kidding me. I literally never take pictures until right now. In my life I've taken pictures an average of once every 15 years.
I need to read the manual.... Paula has a nice pic I took in vegas with her camera where my finger is partially covering it.

Thanks, Track. That house is my favorite, did you see the weird little deck thing on the roof? Anyways...
That was one of the two sunny days we've had in the past month, so don't be too jealous. It's back to rain, today.
BTFLCHLD - that was taken about 5 blocks from my house. I got out of Walgreens, looked over, and there was this massive wall of fog rising up from the bay, the biggest I'd ever seen. So I had to take a pic.

I visited San Francisco many years ago and totally fell in love. It's nice to know that you appreciate your own scenery. I'm sure many people take it for granted, though I can't see how.

I do, too - In San Francisco. Not where I live, I think it's gorgeous here. I am realizing that comparitively San Francisco is a beautiful city. Of course I love all the water views of it, and Golden Gate park. I just don't like the concrete bits as much, or the weather.
But also, everywhere I've lived has had really great (IMO) scenery. Perhaps not as dramatic as here, with the ocean and everything....

That is a great hike, and it is wonderful that you are really making use of your location. I love those views! I have only explored the hills in the East Bay a little, and more around lake Anza. The first time I ventured into the redwoods in Oakland, I was amazed at how remote it felt. Most of the years I lived in the City, I spent a lot of time venturing out to Marin, or hiking in the Presidio, and then towards the end of my 17 years there I found that it took too long just to get out of the City - too many people!
Now that we live in the middle of more nature than City, I find I miss concrete a little.
You are invited to hike here in the Santa Cruz mountains with us any time you like.

Hell no. Generally when I hike, I have the "got to get away from it all" mentality. So the last thing I want to do is hike alongside homes and primed trails. Although I did enjoy the Malibu Canyon...even if it's very dry and kinda boring. I hiked to that area where they used to film Planet of The Apes and M*A*S*H. They even left a decomposing, rusty jeep there. Kinda gross actually. LA can be so trying. LOL.
Nothing compares to the Bay Area and very few places compare the to the garden of eden called Mt. Tam.
Since I'm a new Uncle, I'm up there frequently. My bro lives in Danville. So get ready...I'll drive us (and any others) right to my favorite trail head at Mt. Tam. The Kent Trail is my favorite but certainly the hardest climb and the longest...but amazing terrain changes.
There is another trail I go on often, also terrain changes, and of course drops you right into Stinson Beach. Ahhhhh!!! Then on the way back you hike alongside waterfalls and streams...it's so lush.
You down?

I have only explored the hills in the East Bay a little, and more around lake Anza.
Did you get a chance to see the plethora of skunks running around, especially at dusk. I have never seen so many of the little rascals in one place. They are pretty used to people, so they generally don't squirt.

I'd love to. When I get a car. I love Marin, but it does take long to get there, especially from here. I really like going over the Richmond/San Rafael bridge, though, it's my favorite bridge here.:) I've never been hiking much around SF - a couple times in GG park, but not to hike so much as get to the beach. I should go over, though, it's pretty darn close.

Absolutely! I'm planning to be up there in April...but will probably be crazy busy (since I've booked myself silly). However, count on May.
My family and friends keep telling me about the constant rain (and snow). Which is good since Mt. Tam will be glorious in late spring. And I do mean glorious.

She was speaking of the Golden Gate Bridge, which used to be the longest suspension bridge. Some other bridge took it over of recent. The Golden gate is also considered one of the modern wonders of the world.
As for the San Mateo, yes, it's long (kinda boring structurally). Not sure how long it is.

It is sort of out in the middle of nowhere. It is a schlep to get there, I think, never been though. I grew up in SF and have never even been to Alcatraz. I know the history and seen pics and read stories, but that's the last place I would find entertaining. I would suggest Angel Island (Japanese internment Camp and immigration center) as a better SF Bay Area tourist thrill alternative.

When you go to Alcatraz there is an audio tour. You get headphones and the recording guides you through the prison with stories and sound effects. It was actually pretty fascinating although shudder inducing. Plus you get to take a boat over and I love boats! It's an excuse to get out on the bay and see the Golden Gate from the water. My friend took me out there, he'd lived in SF for 3 years and not done anything touristy. He thought it was a worthwile trip over there too.

It's been alternating between frozen ground & mud here lately, so not much fun. It's in the upper 20's today, which I don't mind really but I'd rather not be out in it for hours.
There aren't great hiking places near me (mostly nature trails, no good hills.) The good places I go are about an hour's drive & we usually go in summer.

Yeah whatever, Thighmaster, I don't buy it. You, with your nature and your biking and your muscles...I know you can't see me but I'm shaking my fist at you!  :wavey:

No, really - others can vouch, it's not cool.

Upper 20's?!? Hmmm, yeah, NO.
Great - Suze lives in Boston and she's been to Alcatraz and I haven't.

I will not do it. Ever. I'm proud of my SF native distinction.
Like I mentioned, Angel Island is a much better alternative and has lovely hiking trails around the island, which is much larger than Alcatraz and richer in history. It's the Ellis Island of the west coast. Of course it is not without its darkside, that being a Japanese Internment Camp during WW2.

Hey Amber...
Is that the "new" east wing of the new Bay bridge being built alongside the old (and still current) one? I saw conceptual drawings of what the final east bridge will look like. I can't wait until it is finished...it's going to be gorgeous and put the west bridge to shame.
On a side note, I watched the film Nina Takes a Lover last night, which was filmed in SF and they had gorgeous shots of the city and the west wing of the Bay Bridge (since the current east part is fugly).

Did you see that show about when the native americans reclaimed it and lived there? Or, wait, you were probably alive then. Anyway, it was really interesting.
Wait, am I high? Was it treasure island? Crap. Anyway, it was interesting.
Edit - I don't know, Richard.

What do you mean you don't know? It's right in front of you. Is there one or two bridges?

I.don't.know.
I can't see it from my apartment, you know. I can't tell from the pic. I haven't driven over the bridge in about three years....I can't tell when I'm under the water on BART....
I'll see if I can check online for you. They're working on new freeway stuff in some inconvenient part of san francisco, but I don't know about the bridge. I thought they weren't ready to build yet. Hold on.

You're right about this and I have seen it. The graffiti they left behind is still on parts of the buildings.

Richard - my friend who drives took me to work, and he says they have started, they're doing the concrete, and there are cranes and stuff all 'round.
THanks, suze!

Thanks, Amber. From your photo, it looks like work has begun, it looks like two distinct bridges next to each other or at least the beginning stages. It's just hard to tell in the photo.

Yeah, he said no bridge yet. He intimated those are cranes and structural helpers.
