I thought that too but then I thought, wait, how old is she?
I think she's in her 50s
Umm, I am totally disgusted and outraged. I cannot believe that Chris is gone! I so had him pegged to win the whole thing and he was by far my favorite. Katharine sucks and we should all make it our personal mission to vote her the hell off. I'm 100% behind Elliott now. He's the only one left with real vocal talent.
yes yes YES.

Wow - the AI boards are imploding. I can't keep them from crashing on my PC & I've never had that prob before no matter who got the boot.

The last time I got it to come up (for about 30 secs), the first thread was titled "Death to Katharine".

OMG. I so wanted to go over there last night but I went to bed instead. I bet it was heinous.

BTW - What's up with Cilla's stomach? Is she ill or something? It was very distended - the cut of that jacket didn't help much, but it was obviously swollen.

WTF is up with her stomach? What kind of illness would cause belly bloat like that?

speaking of looking at the camera...Chris has gotten really bad about doing that with an open-mouth pout kind of thing.
Jason- this is why you and I are soul-sisters. I'm sitting here eating my lunch, reading along and minding my own business when I read this and BWAH!

My husband and I were totally telling Chris to shut his damn mouth! And we were imitating him and giggling and everything!

That aside, we really don't agree on the Taylor thing. I like him and I like his voice. I just don't like to LOOK at him. Same thing with Elliott. I think they're both very sweet guys. Katharine is pathetic- so I'm with you on that one. She's just so damn pretty!

Since Chris is from where I live, everyone is in an uproar because apparently, he was supposed to be here in Greensboro this week-end doing all these appearances and they are now cancelled!

I wasn't blown away by anyone last night. I think Elliott's going home tonight too. It seems like the judges weren't all that impressed with him. Katharine is boring and Taylor is only on about 30% of the time. I liked his rendition of "You Are so Beautiful" but his "Try A Little Tenderness" was not nearly on par enough to win this Otis Redding fan over. I was really stoked that he did that song, but the beginning was mostly bad and then by the end he was trying too hard. I don't like his dancing, it's not cute anymore.

Elliott didn't impress me with any of his songs either  Dude needs to come out of himself and he could have with Open Arms--that song is nothing if not heart-wrenchingly emotional. He could have done so much with that moment but he didn't. He just stood there like a wooden statue basically. I still think he has the best voice left in the competition, unfortunately, he doesn't act like he does.

Who else is just sick of Katharine by now? Lord knows I am...

Ditto to most of what Tracye said. Elliott finally captured my attention during Elvis week, and then lo and behold, he's a dud this week. He is so nervous and stiff on stage, and none of his performances were above average last night.

Screecharine - yuck. She sounded pretty on "Over the Rainbow" because she ditched the vocal acrobatics, and also because she just SAT THERE. When the girl tries to dance and/or be sexy, it's painful to watch.

Taylor - "You are so Beautiful" was very good, but that spastic ending to "Try a Little Tenderness" was just wrong.

Elliott will go.

skcin
05-17-2006, 09:56 AM
Nobody has any opinions? Did anybody bother to watch?

OK. Round 1:

Elliot does a nice job with "Open Arms," but he seemed nervous.

Kat butchers "I Believe I Can Fly" with her endless (unsuccessful) attempts at singing runs all over the place. Like Randy said "sometimes, you should actually sing the melody." Her eye rolling & looks of confusion when the judges critique her has grown tiresome.

Taylor did pretty good with "Dancin' in the Dark." Not the best song for me, if Clive wanted a Bruce tune, he should have gone with something else, maybe "I'm on Fire" or "The Rising" or my all time fave, "Rosalita." "Dancin" has always seemed a bit cheesy to me. And Paula playing Courtney Cox? Friggin' hilarious.

Round 1 winner - Taylor, Elliot a close second.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Round 2:

Elliot - good job Paula, choose a song for him that nobody knows. I can't even recall the title. :sorry: He was great vocally, but I don't think he connected with the audience at all.

Kat - I don't like her, but I have to give it to her. She blew the roof off the place with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", it was just fabulous. She didn't go crazy & oversing it at all. {Brandon - do you think she did Judy justice?} My one complaint is the song is so gorgeous, so classic - why was she in a T-shirt & jeans sitting on the floor? And I think Kim Locke's version from season 2 (?) was slightly better.

Taylor - The song "You Are So Beautiful" was spot on, he sang it beautifully. Somehow, the sap factor wasn't that bad.

Round 2 winner - Kat

----------------------------------------------------------------

Round 3:

Elliot - Fab vocals, but again, nobody knows that song well, so he didn't connect. What was the name of that one? "I Know It From My Soul" or something? I'm afraid Simon's right - the songs weren't good enough to move him through to the next round.

Kat - "I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues." Um, yeah, sure, stunningly beautiful white chick from Cali that's on TV has the blues. OK, whatever you say. Randy's right, she thinks she can do Ella, and Mariah, and Whitney, but she's just not quite that good. I wasn't feelin' it, dawg.

Taylor - "Try a Little Tenderness" was the perfect song for him. He kicked that song's ass, it was fantastic.

Round 3 winner - Taylor

----------------------------------------------------------------

So, I like Elliot, but I'm sure he's out. Taylor & Kat in the final, and Taylor will win.

Kat - "I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues." Um, yeah, sure, stunningly beautiful white chick from Cali that's on TV has the blues.

Dude, don't you know? Whenever they don't like one of Kat's songs all they do is gush about how beautiful she looks! And they've done a lot of that recently ;). Yeah, her eye rolls have got to go. They used to call Paris "princess P" but I think the "princess" title is more apt for Kat. It doesn't serve her well to pull attitude in front of the voting public like that. And her "ya'll have been so hard on me lately" was pathetic. She needs a big, fat slice of humble pie imo.

If it does come down to Taylor and Kat, I'm pulling for Taylor.

Almost everything that Paula said. But, last night, I finally found my clear favorite. I enjoyed ALL of Taylor's songs and I voted for him as many times as I could stand--which was only like five, but that's better than nothing.

I did think Kat's "I Believe I Can Fly" wasn't as bad as Randy and Paula thought it was. It was too much at times, yes, but I think Simon was right about the performance. I do think she thinks she is way too cute, and it's getting old. Yes, she's gorgeous, but like ya'll are saying, she is not as talented as she thinks she is. I don't want the cameras on her parents anymore. It pisses me off every time I see stagemomfromhell just about exploding with pride at how well her baby is doing. Even her dad's teary eyes annoy me for some reason.

My husband made me close my eyes to listen to Elliot without seeing his stiff deer-in-the-headlights look, and he did sound pretty good. I hope he goes though, because he just doesn't have the charisma he needs to be a star. But who knows what will happen? I'm surprised he has lasted as long as he has. He must have a pretty good fanbase somewhere.

I thought Katharine was the biggest spoiled brat I've ever seen on the show last night. I never much liked her to begin with, but I am *so* over her now. I'm really hoping Elliott pulls a shocker tonight.

As for last night's show, poor Elliott just didn't look good. He sounded good, but his song choices were bad and yes, he did look nervous.

Katharine was really, really good on Over the Rainbow. I didn't like her other songs. She hit a major klunker note in the middle of I Believe. I hate that song anyway, but she made my ears bleed on that one note.

Taylor was good on Dancin' in the Dark, great on You Are So Beautiful. Try a Little Tenderness was a little disappointing to me, but it wasn't really Taylor's fault. That song needs time to build to really make an impact and a minute and a half just isn't long enough. Taylor is definitely the one to beat, no matter who ends up with him next week.

Sounds as though we're all in agreement over last night's show, but here's the review I posted in my journal earlier today:

Elliott: I really do love him. Jeff [husband] loves him because he (Elliott) has no confidence in himself and even though I don’t like his style of music (R&B), I like him. I really don’t know if he’ll make it after tonight. But I thought what Simon said about his mother being proud of him was very cool. Actually, Simon said a lot of really nice things to all of the contestants last night. Anyway, The Journey song was very pretty- the other two were good, too. Elliott’s appeal lies in his personality (for me).

Katharine: Okay, so I haven’t really liked her in a while. I haven’t necessarily disliked her, I just think that she’s kind of…boring. She’s stunningly beautiful, and she definitely can sing, but I have never really felt any like, angst or anything from her. Like she sings songs without any true emotion maybe? That being said, the bitch got me last night with Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I was tearing up, just like her dad. I thought her first song (I believe I Can Fly) was terrible, and I thought it was kind of an unfair song for the producer to choose for her. Her last song (I think an Etta James song?) was okay.

Taylor: Everyone knows I love Taylor, but well he kind of sucked last night. Well, no he didn’t. Clive Davis’s choice of Dancing in the Dark was terrible! What the HELL? He gives Elliott Open Arms, Katharine- I Believe I Can Fly and then Taylor gets this stupid song that he can’t show any vocal on. Yes, it was fun to watch him pull Paula up on the stage and dance ala Bruce Springsteen and Courtney Cox, but still. Then, I really thought Randy’s choice of You Are So Beautiful was going to be PERFECT! I was like, “Yay!”. And then Taylor KIND OF let me down. The, “You are so beautiful…” part was kind of eh. But then the, “You’re everything I hoped for, you’re EVERYTHING I need…” was awesome. So, who knows.

This is true. And since Otis Redding is one of my favorite all-time male vocalists, I went into his performance a bit skeptical, I admit. I just think Taylor is only really good when he's hitting the big notes. He doesn't have the vocal control to handle the soft, slow parts which are actually deceivingly hard to pull off. Notice during the soft parts of songs he kind of sounds like he's talking the lyrics instead of singing them. Again, I thought "You Are So Beautiful" was great. I was impressed. For me, that was enough to put him ahead of Kat and of course Elliott is my favorite now. Is anyone else having Chris withdrawals? His presence was sorely missed last night . It's the first time I could really tell that someone was missing from the week before.

I thought all three were deserving to be in the finals of AI, but figured Elliott might be the one going home. It was wonderful to see the home town support for Taylor and Elliott. Katharine doesn't have a small knit community behind her like one finds in the south; but clearly she equal amounts of support around the country. It's LA. Stevie, Lindsey and others in the community had other plans that day rather than hang out on the street corners for "Kat." LA must roll it's eyes at all of this, when they live in a world of people clammoring, struggling, waiting tables, trying to sell their talent and songs every day, the hard way. And these people write their own songs and music. American Idol brings in "star wannabees" and fashions them into "idols." LA: "'the people out there turn the music into gold." American Idol? The show prides itself in fashioning a "golden calf" for the people to worship and hope you'll buy it, because you think you are a part of the process.

Still, I think Katharine has the best voice of the final two, but Taylor can surely dazzle with his funky dancing where his voice isn't number one. He has a decent voice, clearly. He's the bigger entertainer of the two. Yet I give Katharine the edge voice wise in terms of versatility and marketability.

What's American Idol about? The best voice? The best entertainer? The best look? Who can sell the most albums? Who is the most popular in America? If you can answer those with certainty, you probably already know who will win next week. Meanwhile, I've got my crystal ball, my tea leaves, my little bag of old bones to shake around ... and I'll be voting. I'll be voting for Katharine. I suspect I'm going for the underdog. We'll all wait and see who becomes the next golden calf.

skcin
05-18-2006, 09:09 AM
^ I think she'll be the underdog too. But this week's results were pretty damn close (about 100,000 votes between Kat & Elliot, out of a total of 50 million.)

Idol's producers are not stupid. Like you said, Tango, it's all about marketing & who will sell the most records. I don't want to think that it's fixed, and I really hope it's not. But the judges do have some influence on people voting, IMO, and they choose what they say & how they say it very carefully. Notice how Randy keps telling Kat that she's trying to be Mariah & Whitney, but she's not?

I've said it before, I'll say it again: They already have R&B guy/girl, pop/rock girl & country girl. They need bluesy/soul/pop/AC guy now.

Tango, that's a pretty cynical outlook, dontcha think? American Idol means different things to different people, I think. It's part singing competition, part entertainer, part personality, part popularity.

And for every Katharine vote you cast, I'll be cancelling you out with a Taylor vote. ;)

Patti, I agree with you on at least one sentence: American Idol means different things to different people. To the producers, the "judges," it's big money. To the performers, it's name recognition and a desperate shot at the big brass/gold ring. I had to write a paper on cynicism in college. "The name Cynic actually comes from the Greek word kynikos, meaning 'dog-like.'" Nah, I'm not dog-like, although I like dogs. You'll cancel me out? Don't count on it! I was bummed to see Elliott go too. He certainly has not sung my favorite songs but he does have a good voice and he seems like such a genuine person. It was touching to see his hometown and his emotional reaction to everyone supporting him.

I almost felt sorry for Katherine last night since the guys got such a hometown welcome and she didn't. But then she pissed me off again when Ryan asked her if she felt lucky to have her family with her (or something along those lines) and she answered with, "We like, never talk to each other! We do send test messages, though!" I'm so glad her dad is bawling his head off in the audience and Kat couldn't give a sh*t.

I think Kat would be more marketable as an idol, but I flat out don't want her to win. I just think she's inconsistent and I think she's a pampered little princess used to getting her way. Plus, I've always kind of liked Taylor, and since I can't have Elliott, I'll vote for him instead. If I can get through, that is.

FYI (from d-listed)

Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks will each sing 3 tunes tonight at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Taylor will sing Levon by Elton John and Living for the City by Stevie Wonder. The new song he will sing which will become the Idol single is called Do I Make You Proud written by Tracy Ackerman, Andrew John Watkins and Paul David Wilson. Paul Wilson and Tracy Ackerman have worked with Lisa Stansfield, Al Green, Tina Turner, the Spice Girls, and S Club.

Katharine will sing the two songs she performed while on her fat ass, Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. The single she will perform is called My Destiny. Her destiny being not becoming the American Idol.

The line-up for tomorrow's finale is continuing to grow. In addition to Carrie Underwear, Clay Aiken, Live with Chris Daughtry, Elliott Yamin with Mary J. Blige, Meat Loaf and Daniel Powter....Dionne Warwick will perform That's What Friends are For. Bucky Covington and Kevin Covais will also sing Burt Bacharach songs. Paris Bennett will perform with Al Jarreau.
ok, I'm def watching. if only to see Screecharine on her fat ass one last time.

Did they do a Greatest Hits Finale last year? I can't remember. These are supposed to be some of the best singers in the country and they can't come up with anything new for the big event?

Taylor = California Raisin

Katharine: Somebody drop a house on her already.

worst . finale . ever

Kat is a one trillion times better SINGER than Taylor.. she just got stuck with the awful single!

It really doesn't really matter who wins.. they both get a record deal.. but I have been voting for Kat all night.. I have gotten through about 20 times! Even if she couldn't sing a note I'd still vote for her because she is beautiful and has great taste in clothes.. and beautiful people deserve to win anything!

Yeah - the new songs were bad. But real singers could have made them at least *sound* good. K got 3 notes total in tune. Even T sounded unsure of what to do with the song, and as much as he annoys me I've never thought him lacking in confidence.

I voted for Taylor twice through text message, because I couldn't get through on the phone. I voted for Taylor, because I'm rooting from the older guy. He's 29, but he looks older. Therefore, a lot of people didn't think he could win. I think that American Idol should be open to all ages, and if you are the best then you should be on. It is a case of ageism. :p GO Taylor!

For being such a good singer, she was terribly off key on that last song. ****ty tune or not, there's no excuse for that in the finale, IMO. How do you get the a cappella start to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" right, but not some cheesy, easy song? And that dress? She has a nice shape & I like that she's not a scrawny twig, but any self respecting Southern woman wouldn't have left the house without Lycra on those thighs.

Taylor - not the greatest vocalist, but he puts on a good show & he's always in tune. I was underwhelmed by "Levon", though, which surprised me.

I agree, most boring finale EVER! Those original songs always blow, I hate them.

I was only able to get 1 vote in for Taylor between 9pn - 11:15pm. So Brandon got 20 votes in, huh? Guess it must have been easier to get through for Kat. :p

How come? Is it, his gray hair? His "soul patrol" nonsense? His jerky, spastic palsy style dancing? Nah, couldn't be any of those things!

I hear what you're saying, really I do. But after Chris left and then Elliott, I just couldn't stomach Katharine winning--she rubs me the wrong way, man. I like Taylor as a person, I just can't stand some of the stuff he does when he performs. I really do like his voice, I admit it. I think he has a nice, soulful, gravely voice and when he shines, he really shines. Although sometimes he's kind of unpredictable with that voice, like you don't really know if it's strong enough to pull most things off, and he's got limited range but I'll take him over prissy Kat any day  :sorry:. Girl grates. SERIOUSLY grates.

I haven't watched any of American Idol this year for obvious reasons, but I've been reading about it off and on, and when I saw that this Taylor Hicks guy who's supposedly a shoo-in did "Levon" last night, I searched up a clip on YouTube.

Is this guy seriously the best they can do this year? Why is everybody cheering so much?

If this is all it takes, I need to try out for this show. I've got no problem whoring myself out as a pop star for a couple years, and I can sing "Levon" way better than this.

I must say that the finale was waaaaaaaay too long, and it had some pretty cheesy moments. I, for one, enjoyed it immensely! I don't care, I'll admit that I'm a loser, I loved it.

Seriously, I just watched it back again on Tivo (I had a bunch of friends from work over last night for an "Idol" party & things were a bit too loud to hear & see everything - YEAH, that's right, I had an IDOL party, screw you!) and I thought it was great! Everyone looked gorgeous & sounded awesome. And yes, Taylor won, so while I'm not thrilled (I was rooting for Chris or Elliot) I'm pretty satisfied. Taylor AND Kat both got brand new cars & records deals, so I don't think anyone needs to boohoo for Kat.

Highlights: I could not believe the artists they had on that show last night! PRINCE?!?! Are you kidding me? Prince doesn't do this type of thing, I was so excited when he came out. He was fabulous. Hilarious that he walked offstage before Seacrest could get to him & try to shake his hand.

Mary J. Blige & Elliot were fantastic on "One" (woman gave me chills when she did it with U2 this year on The Grammy's and she gave me chills again) and although "That's What Friends Are For" usually induces vomitting for me, Dionne Warwick looks & sounds fantastic. The Burt Bacharach (sp) medley was fun. And "Don't Stop" was not bad at all, IMO! I was just thrilled to finally see a Mac tune on this show. Chris doing that tune with Live was very cool, and Paris was in her element singing with Al Jarreau.

Anyone notice that Mandisa ended up front & center at the end of the ladies' medley? Wonder if that was accidental.

Lowlights: WTF happened to Clay? I don't think he looked bad, just really different. My mom asked me this morning "who was that guy that came out to sing to that goofy kid?" I had to explain it was Clay with some weirdo haircut, she had no idea. HEY! I just realized who he looks like now - the gay brother in Wedding Crashers who's in love with Vince Vaughn & paints his portrait! :p

Can Toni Braxton please learn to project her voice? I couldn't hear a damn thing out of her mouth.

Can Meatloaf please learn to get his timing right? He was way off on the first verse. The rest was OK, he doesn't sound all that great these days, but Kat played it up really well with him on stage, good theatrics.

Can we stop the whole "Kelly Pickler is a cute dumb blond" act? I was fooled for a while, until I read that one day she said "I'm sometimes confused by Simon's terminology." Really. Terminology? That's a pretty big word for a dumb blond. Whatever. I like her haircut, though.

No ****. I was rolling on the floor laughing with wild abandon when I saw that. By the way, his face looks tighter than Madonna's ass. He needs to stop with the plastic surgery or botox or whatever the hell he's doing to himself. It's fug.

Pickler and Wolfgang Puck made me want to turn off the t.v. That? was painful. It soooo wasn't funny and only made the two of them look like stupid bafoons. We already know that Pickler is a fool, but Wolfgang too? Yikes.

Yeah, Clay's hair looked, um, weird  and I forgot about how funny he sounds when he sings. He's got a weird, weird, singing style, I don't even know how to describe it, it's just...odd.

I thought Toni Braxton was the weirdest. At one point she tried to do some freak dance with Taylor and I noticed he moved out of the way. After all, his parents were watching.
Mary J. stole the show. That was hot, hot, hot. And Prince? I was not even expecting that. I'm off to buy some Prince on iTunes this morning. He was sublime.:)

Obviously, I haven't watched it yet, I will tonight.

20 Random Idol finale observations
May 25, 2006. 09:38 AM
VINAY MENON

1. Carrie Underwood thought-bubble: "Okay, now we’re even. I’m so done with American Idol after tonight."
2. Is Heather Locklear dating Ben Stiller?
3. Chris Daughtry is performing with his favourite band, Live. Guess that’s a screw-you to Fuel.
4. Did Wolfgang Puck just say kissing Kellie Pickler "was the perfect appetizer"?
5. Yes, Kellie, escargot is pronounced "escargoatee." My God, she’s going to vomit on live television!
6. In a constant attempt to make Katharine seem slimmer, producers resort to Plan B: a duet with Meatloaf.
7. Get the stun-gun before that jumping freak Dave Hoover injures somebody in the audience!
8. More Puck 'n' Pickler: Now Kellie is trying to hypnotize a lobster.
9. Are we really listening to a medley of BTO and Fleetwood Mac?
10.Um, when did Mary J. Blige enter the Witness Protection Program?
11.I think Toni Braxton is lipsynching!
12. Just what Clay Aiken needs: singing an Elton John song classic while joined on stage by a hyperventilating male superfan.
13. The finalists are performing with... Burt Bacharach? Seriously, is it 2006 or have I fallen through a hole in the space-time continuum?
14. Chicken Little just got caught between the moon and New York City.
15. Next category in the Golden Idol Awards ... 'Best Male Bonding'. This may be the first TV show that’s in the closet.
16. Prince walks off stage and Ryan Seacrest suddenly looks tall enough to play in the NBA.
17. Just before the winner is announced, Katharine and Taylor are dressed for the prom and singing a duet though neither appears to be having the time of their lives.
18. On the record 63.4 million votes, Ryan says, "That’s more than any president in the history of our country has ever received!" Yes, jackass, because teens are not permitted to vote 10,000 times each in national politics.
19. Taylor Hicks is the American Idol! And for a nice change, somebody other than Katharine’s father is crying. Don’t be shy! Let it all out, Mr. Hicks! If David Hasselhoff can weep, so can you!
20. Taylor is singing his debut single 'Do I Make You Proud?' No, not at this moment. Hey, he’s already won, no reason to sing in tune now. Soul Patrol!

I'll admit that I'm a loser,
No arguement here

YEAH, that's right, I had an IDOL party
Did you have a Oprah Legend's Ball Party too?

PRINCE?!?! Are you kidding me? Prince doesn't do this type of thing, I was so excited when he came out.
Me too. That was awesome. There was some rumour that he had said that he was too good for AI.

 Apparently that was his first public outing since his porn escapades on the internet.

I just loved the fact that Taylor won and Simon didn't even want him to make it to the next round in the beginning. Stupid Simon.

Livia - those 20 random thoughts are hilarious, that guy hit the nail on the head on every one of them.

Forgot to mention that I was dying laughing at Simon's montage to "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" LOL!

And Hasselhoff? WTF?

That will go down as one of the most bizarre moments in TV history, if only for Clay's new hairstyle. And I knew what was about to happen - how did the wannabe not know?Personally, I think he wanted to take him backstage for a private visit.
