Thanks to a nifty new cable decoder I stole from my dad for the evening, I can now watch the Oscar pre-show (and later on the Red Carpet show) on E!. It doesn't have ABC, but a german channel is airing the actual Academy Awards, so I guess that means I will be staying up till 5 am to catch it all.
So, who else is watching? :wavey:

I'll be watching Joan and Melissa while I record E, or the other way around, not sure yet.
I just watched Crash last night - good movie. And I watched Walk the Line earlier this week. Those are the only Oscar-nominated films I've seen so far, since I loathe going to movie theaters.
I'll be watching. I've seen Crash, Brokeback Mountain, and Walk the Line. All good.

I've only seen two of the nominated films (Walk the Line and Brokeback Mountain) and the only category I care about is Best Actor. However, I know that my favorite isn't going to win so unless I'm desperately bored and there is absolutely NOTHING else on television tonight, I'm skipping the Oscars.

Here are my annual Oscar predictions...
Best Supporting Actress: Rachel Weisz for The Constant Gardener. I would really prefer Michelle Williams to win for Brokeback Mountain, but I think the Academy will honor Rachel.
Best Supporting Actor: This could go to either George Clooney for Syriana (he has 3 nominations this year and will probably win this one) or Matt Dillon for Crash. I would love to see Matt Dillon - one of my favorite actors - win and the Academy very well could honor him because this was a terrific role, but George Clooney is so beloved in Hollywood. This will be an interesting category.
Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon for Walk The Line. There is a huge buzz behind Felicity Huffman in Transamerica (and wouldn't that be something if she won?), but I don't think enough people have seen that movie. My bet is that it's Reese's night.
Best Actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Capote. My favorite working actor today, he was brilliant in this role and the Academy truly respects this amazingly talented actor.
Best Director: Ang Lee for Brokeback Mountain. A gorgeous, sweeping, beautiful movie.
Best Film: Crash. While Brokeback Mountain could very well win (and deservingly so), I think that the Academy will vote for Crash for it's social commentary and it's bold look at racism in America.

I really wasn't paying much attention to the crowd, so I didn't really notice their reaction. It just seems to me, though, that the Oscars is always pretty uptight, and everyone always seems to be smiling through clenched teeth.

Meryl Streep and Lilly Tomlin were adorable! Meryl has always been a favorite. I was watching one of her films from the 80's recently and something about her reminds me of Stevie (when they were both in their 30's more so). They are both strong, non-classical beauties with a sweet vulnerability and both true artists. Even their bone structure is similar. I can’t explain it but ever since I watched this movie of a young Meryl she has been reminding me of Stevie. Does anybody else see this?

WOOT WOOT!! OMG I'm so excited (and finally something to be excited about). Hustle and Flow was one of my favorite movies of the year so naturally I was stoked when it was nominated for 2 big awards - best actor and best original song. I love "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" but never in a million years did I think it would win (although I was hoping). I just jumped up and down and screamed when it won. What a triumph! Frist Eminem, now Three-Six Mafia. I'm most excited because it's very un-Oscar like if you know what I mean. Normally these guys wouldn't be winning Oscars since hip-hop doesn't seem to be a favorite of The Academy.

Some interesting articles on "Good Golly Miss Dolly!"
Parton's Plea For Tolerance
By Peter Cooper, USA TODAY
NASHVILLE — Dolly Parton has no trouble relating to outsiders. "I've always been a weird, out-there freak myself," she says.
Growing up in the mountains of East Tennessee, she was used to not being accepted. "My grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher. It was a sin to even pluck your eyebrows, and they thought it was a sin for me to be there looking like Jezebel."
Her ability to identify with outcasts helped her to an Oscar nomination for Travelin' Thru, a song she wrote for the movie Transamerica. The main character is a pre-operative transsexual (played by Felicity Huffman) traveling the country with his son.
"Some things are strange to me, and some things are odd," says Parton, 60. "But I don't condemn. If you can accept me, I can accept you."
The ceremony March 5 won't be Parton's first Oscar experience; her 9 to 5 was nominated in 1980. But this time, she gets to perform.
She'll walk the red carpet in a Robert Behar-designed dress with Duncan Tucker, Transamerica's producer and director. (Of her husband of 40 years, Carl Dean, she says, "I can't even get him to go for a Big Mac, much less the Oscars.")
Tucker was instrumental in offering Parton direction for the song. "He wanted the song to be about redemption and about people's feelings," Parton says.
She struggled until one morning on her tour bus she had the idea for a spiritual theme and a gospel feel. She wrote: "God made me for a reason, and nothing is in vain/Redemption comes in many shapes with many kinds of pain." She finished in a day.
Parton is considering putting the song on a gospel album and doing a dance club version.
"Having a big gay following, I get hate mail and threats," she says. "Some people are blind or ignorant, and you can't be that prejudiced and hateful and go through this world and still be happy. One thing about this movie is that I think art can change minds. It's all right to be who you are."
PARTON THREATENED FOR HAVING GAY FANS
24/02/2006
Singer DOLLY PARTON has been bombarded with hate mail because of her popularity with the gay community.
The COAT OF MANY COLORS singer has a large gay male fan base, which has made her a target for hate-mongers.
She explains, "Having a big gay following, I get hate mail and threats."
The country music legend has received an Oscar nomination for writing the song TRAVELIN' THRU, from the movie TRANSAMERICA.
The film's main character is a pre-operative transsexual, played by DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star FELICITY HUFFMAN.
The 9 TO 5 singer hopes the movie and her song can foster understanding and tolerance between people from different walks of life.
Parton explains, "Some people are blind or ignorant, and you can't be that prejudiced and hateful and go through this world and still be happy.
"One thing about this movie is that I think art can change minds. It's all right to be who you are."
Meanwhile, the 60 year old revealed she has spent over £1 million on improving her cleavage. She said: "My cleavage isn't insured for £1million - that's how much it costs to keep them up and looking good.”
Dolly's Tune Owes A Lot To Transsexual
With Jo Piazza and Chris Rovar
December 14, 2005
Gold standard Dolly Parton told us she had insider knowledge when writing her Golden Globe-nominated 'Travelin' Thru' for 'Transamerica.'
Bosomy Dolly Parton was even more buoyant than usual yesterday as she floated on the news of her first Golden Globe nomination.
"I'm just so tickled," chirped the country goddess, whose tune "Travelin' Thru" received a nod for Best Original Song.
Dolly composed the ballad for "Transamerica," in which fellow Globe nominee Felicity Huffman plays a woman who comes by her breasts the hard way - through a sex-change operation.
Parton told us you don't have to know the song is about a transsexual to like it. Given its Christian imagery, she said, "country fans may think it's gospel.
"That's not particularly the kind of movie they'd go to see. But it's a beautiful movie, and they might be lured to it by the song.
"I've known a few transsexuals," said Parton, who's something of a gay icon. In fact, she thinks "Travelin' Thru" turned out as well as it did thanks to the guidance of a friend who used to be a woman. "I have firsthand knowledge of how complicated the whole process can be," she went on. "I knew this person before, during and after he was a man. You might call him 'A Boy Named Sue.' That's what his name used to be.
"He works for me," Dolly went on. "He typed up the lyrics when I was writing and rewriting it."

I think Catherine is very pretty, but not beautiful. And I remember seeing her in one movie where she was terribly skinny, like she was going to blow over in the wind skinny and it turned me off. I think maybe she has put on weight since than but I can't get that super-unhealthy skinny image of her out of my head. It was not attractive.
Gawd I think she's GORGEOUS....in The 40 Year Old Virgin! Man I almost wet myself! Her laugh...gah! Ok...excuse me...lol...thank goodness we all have differing tastes...otherwise we'd all be single...and only the "most beautiful" would get noogie.

I think Dolly Parton is the most beautiful person in the room tonight....maybe not physically but with her personality, energy, and heart. She gave the best performance and didn't need dancers or a stupid slow motion reenactment of the film. That woman gives me goosebumps!

Okay, fine I never saw the movie. But I did see Transamerica and I think Dolly was fabulous. But, maybe I'm biased since I don't care for hip hop.
Dolly was fabulous, I couldn't agree more. But try not to judge "The Pimp Song" song just because it's hip-hop and has those lyrics. The main character in the movie may have been a pimp but the film had a much stronger message than that. It was a personal struggle that a lot of people could relate to, not just pimps lol. I highly recommend it if you havn't seen it.

I will now repeat my conspiracy theory that I posted when Crash was announced as a nominee. I said that there is a conservative element in the Academy that wouldn't want a man-on-man love movie to win, and would push Crash as the winner so that it couldn't get accused of bigotry.

I'm not surprised that Crash won for best pic - that was the buzz on all the pre-award shows...and I thought it was a brilliant movie. I haven't seen the others, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I liked it. However, as much as I l love Matt Dillon, I did not believe his performance was Oscar-worthy. Don Cheadle's was though!
Charlize's bow, probably blocking Matt Dillon's view.
Worst dressed man: Love him, but Morgan Freeman. The only person who can get away with wearing an ascot is Thurston Howell, III.
Worst dressed woman: Frances McDormand - ugh!
Best dressed man: Tie: George Clooney and Will Smith
Best dressed women: Hard to choose, because most of 'em looked fabulous tonight! Even the women who went up for awards like documentaries, etc. They usually look like they just fell out of bed and threw something on and didn't bother to wear make-up. But not tonight! Nicole Kidman and Salma Hayek were particularly gorgeous.

Is it possible that it wasn't a conspiracy against homosexuality and that the members of the Academy just thought Crash was a better movie? Trust me I'm the first person who would root for a same-sex themed movie to win an academy award (being that I'm gay) but I'm not totally convinced that the reason it lost was because it was a gay-themed movie.

Is it possible that it wasn't a conspiracy against homosexuality and that the members of the Academy just thought Crash was a better movie?

Since I'm grouchy, I'd like to say that while I appreciated what George Clooney was trying to say about being proud to be out of touch, it is total crap that Hollywood addressed AIDS when everyone else was whispering about it. Hollywood was just as shamefully late in acknowledging the epidemic as everyone else. He picked the wrong example there.
Oh well, at least I have GiniLeaE's pretty emails to look at.
I am pissed...PISSED...that Brokeback didn't win. It soooooo should have. And I'm a Crash fan. What the hell? I didn't quite believe it...and there was a total collective gasp from the audience too. Well I'm just going to have to sit here and sulk now.:(

Sorry, but this is a total joke.
I will now repeat my conspiracy theory that I posted when Crash was announced as a nominee. I said that there is a conservative element in the Academy that wouldn't want a man-on-man love movie to win, and would push Crash as the winner so that it couldn't get accused of bigotry.
There is no way that Crash was the best picture of the year. This is a disgrace in my humble opinion.
Of course it is a disgrace, and of course there is a conservative element in the academy that wouldn't even WATCH the BBM screeners. That was the talk of the town months ago.
I saw Crash last week, and thought it had the sophistication and emotional impact of an ABC afterschool special. It was amateurish, and a total mishmash. I have seen many films about race that were moving and relevant and Crash isn't among them. It was okay. I didn't hate it, didn't love it. It made me feel almost nothing. The scene at the end was the only part that made me react at all. It had too many characters, too many plots, and not enough screen time was given to any of them to allow the audience to invest emotion in them. The plot was an unbelievable contrivance, and some of the lines in the script were unintentionally funny. It is the weakest film to win Best Picture in all the years I have watched the awards. It isn't crap, but it isn't anywhere near the league of the others nominated.
In a month, no one will care about Crash. It will be a footnote in the annals of moviemaking. The most remarkable thing about it will be that it upset Brokeback. That's it. I know of no one who said Crash changed their lives, or their minds about anything. It wasn't hard hitting, it wasn't controversial, it wasn't much of anything at all. It has no cultural significance. The issues it addresses have been done leagues better by other films throughout history. It's a blip on the radar in terms of quality and importance. Even the director said in an interview that BBM was hands down the best movie of the year.
It is telling that BP is the only award that all 6500 members of the academy vote on. Many of the older members are VERY conservative, and that explains everything. But really, it is no matter. Many of the greatest films made didn't win BP, and the list of the ones that did that everyone has forgotten is pretty damned long.
Am I bitter ? Of course I am. But I know I a great movie when I see it, and Crash was not a great movie. It was a decent movie. That's it.

well...I said it. I knew BBM wouldn't sweep like everyone was expecting. the Oscars can suck it. they should be ashamed, imo. Dolly's song should have won, hands down. BBM should have received some kind of actor/actress Oscar. and Ang Lee didn't even thank the actors in the movie...or did he and I just missed it? Stewart as host was fabulous, I thought. Poor Lauren Bacall...why did that give that bat that much to recite??? She was shaking so bad. At first, I couldn't tell if it was her or me.

I hope you bet on this, because you got every category correct!

Guys? Since when were the Oscars about who (or what film) was most deserving of accolades? It's all about politics and popularity and has been at least for as long as I've been watching it.
Yes indeed. "The Oscars" is self indulgent style over content and utter ****e.
The best performances and films rarely win anything. The academy is stuffed full of pompous self importants all trying not to age. It's the ultimate country club. If you don't play by the rules or your face doesn't fit in forget it. I actually quite admire George Clooney (never thought I would say that) because he has managed to walk the thin line between Academy acceptability and remaining true to your craft.

Someone had said that the Crash character storylines were too simple or something, that's what made the movie, the simplicity of the characters yet such a strong message.

I've not seen either yet so I can't comment properly.
I would say if I had to put my money on the academy awarding the best picture award to either a movie that deals with racism or homosexuality then the racism wins every time. Hollywood has only recently acknowledged performances by African-American actors because it can't keep it's head stuck in the sand any longer. I think to be honest it will take Hollywood a little longer to deal with homosexuality. Tom Hanks put in an incredible performance in Philadelphia and it was seen as a breakthough in the industry at the time but I guess they have slipped back into conformity.

and what kills me is in an attempt to overcompensate for that racism, they tossed Halle Barry and Denzel bones for clearly inferior performances. In other words, the mere fact that they were black got them that Award because the performance sure as hell did not. Flash forward to this year and the BBM male performaces were worthy of the award as was the film. That being said, PSH clearly was as well and he also was playing a wildly gay character. So, clearly there can be no hint of prejudice there.
In the end, Crash is a good film, but not in the same class as any of its fellow nominees.
Finally, I often wonder how valid the Academy conspiracy voting theories are. I mean they do not have a meeting and say "do not vote for this one" - etc. Maybe they do it through amount spent on the trade ads

Well I agree. Again I think the Oscar was given to Crash for its message (one that Hollywood can easily get behind, especially given its history, that racism is wrong) not because it's a better movie than Brokeback Mountain.
I think the other movies are more controversial on the whole - Munich (terrorism, wrongful shootings etc), Good Night And Good Luck (political pressure, freedom of the press - still particularly relevant in America at this time), Brokeback Mountain (homosexuality). Crash in many ways had the least controversial message IMO (that is hammered home in the movie), in the liberal-minded Hollywood of today anyway.

I was rolling my eyes at the pathetic amount of time it has taken for the racist mentality of the Academy to fall. I guess many of the older, possibly white supremisist, members have now shuffled off the mortal coil and the Academy has a lot more younger open minded individuals. I'd like to think that anyway. But on the other hand it could have been a PR stunt by the senior members to portray the Academy as more open and understanding towards a more cultural society.

Russell would win Best Asshole in a Leading Role for sure.
I like Halle Berry (:p ) but I sometimes doubt she has, or has been given the chance to show true gravity in a role. I've not seen her push herself in a role to the point I forget it's Halle and believe it's the character and that, for me, is the deciding factor in an award winning performance.

Like him as a person or not, RC was robnbed that year. I mean the following won in a movie he carried:
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Jennifer Connelly
[and mind you she beat out serious competition with Helen Mirren, Gosford Park - Maggie Smith, Gosford Park - Marisa Tomei, In the Bedroom - Kate Winslet, Iris ]
Best Director
Ron Howard
Best Picture
Brian Grazer
Ron Howard
Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published
Akiva Goldsman

As for Halle - here is a list of the nominees:
Actress in a Leading Role
Halle Berry, Monster's Ball
Judi Dench, Iris
Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge
Sissy Spacek, In the Bedroom
Renée Zellweger, Bridget Jones's Diary

IMO - Sissy Spacek deserved it and I could have seen Nicole getting it. Judi was pretty fab. in Iris as well.

Maybe I'm totally off base here, but I was looking at the nominations the other day, and it struck me how in almost all of the major categories, the nominees were ALL contenders with solid performances. I mean usually there's at least one nominee that has no chance to win at all. Maybe that's why the awards were so split up thisa year. And on that note, isnt it rare for Director and Picture to split?

Halle Berry winning it for a lame movie when she should have won for a possible better performance in another movie seems like "a gimme" award (An award show equivelant of a "Mulligan")...
Very similar to Jethro Tull winning a Grummie (Y'all call 'em Grammies) for "Best Metal" over Metallica, To only see Metallica win the award the next year because "the powers that be" realized they screwed up and need to rectify their mistake.
Call it racism ("How can the world have racism when there is only the human race on the planet...What is there, another race of beings here that we dont know of?"-George Carlin), or whatever, but I feel someone should win on merit/skill, not skin color...Was the Academy wrong by not nominating Blacks in the past? Sure...But handing out a "gimme" wont rectify that problem
Brian "Oh, I'm such a racist...guess it must be the Cherokee in me moreso than the Irish" j.
Afterthought-Halle Berry's best performance EVER was in the CBS mini-series of Alex Haley & David Stephens epic "Queen"

Well I agree. Again I think the Oscar was given to Crash for its message
Yes, it's safe, "well duh" message. Don't get me wrong, Crash had a good message, but, it's not really edgy. The particular themes it dealt with have been presented time and again in other films, so what's so groundbreaking and urgent about this movie? I'd say nothing. And the performances were pretty weak and unmoving imo, they, like the movie itself, were totally forgettable.
BBM on the other hand is a movie that stays with you long after you leave the theater. It should've won best picture. Damn the academy!

See, I think WTL could have won as well and it certainly was not an edgy film when compared to the others. Then again, I am not all about edgy films - this coming from the one who was elated with Titantic won becuase I loved it

Exactly HOW difficult (and a stretch of the imagination) is it to play a real life person?
Very difficult. Especially if you're playing a character as quirky as Truman Capote. To be spot on in capturing the essence of someone take after take, scene after scene. Watching Hoffman in Capote had me feeling as though I was watching archive footage of Capote. He was very good, it is very hard to do what he did and he very much deserved the Oscar. Certainly more than H. Ledger.
As an actor, playing your own character creation is easier to do for the most part, not saying it is not difficult, but it's much harder to stay in character playing a known figure than your own character creation.

I would imagine it would be extremely difficult to play a real person versus a character because you have an entire canvas with an original character. You can pretty much do what you want and make them however YOU see them. With a real person who lived and people are familiar with, you have to stay true to that person's speech patterns, mannerisms, quirks, etc. Also, NOT come off like a loon in being a charicature. I've not seen BBM or Capote (or ANY of the movies nom'ed. LOL), but that's JMO.

No, and I understand that. But if the point of the academy was to give the Oscar to a politically edgy/relevant film, then that point should have been made with BBM not Crash. What a tired film that was. I'm sorry, I just thought that movie was weak.

Well, yes...but, 99.99% of the characters on the screen aren't really the actors doing their OWN character creation. They're STILL attempting to create the character vision of the director or writer, correct? Unless the actor himself wrote the screenplay or the adapted work, or is also the director, that is.

Yes it's interesting that racism was the safest option for an academy that has seen only 14 African-American nominations for best actor in it's entire history and an academy that only took 74 years to award best actress to an African-American nominee.

Well sure, but the actor still devises and creates their own method for portraying a character whether that character is historical or not. I don't think you could've easily replaced PSH with just any actor and gotten the same brilliant, nuanced performance, no way, no how.

Well, not really. I mean when considered in the historical context of the world, I'd say that though not stellar, it is not that bad and all signs indicate it got better as the world got better. I mean is there any question that the world and the Academy as a subset of that are far less racist (and even homophobic) than they were 15-20 years ago  So, I think Clooney correctly asserted that.
On edit - I am in no way saying eveything is peachy keen these days. It is not and there is room for vast improvement. I am just saying things have gotten better and I think Hollywood has had a hand in that improvement because it greatly influences pop culture and society as a whole.

Well, considering they gave an Oscar to a black actress in 1939...I'd say they were (emphasis on the past tense)...but, then, between 1939 & Sidney Poitier, how many decent roles were there for black actors/actresses? Not many. That's not the Academy's fault...that's the film studios'.

Well, it kind of has been. His point was it gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939 for Gone With the Wind. In 1939, most of the country refused to eat or even watch movies with black people (that was not just in the South - though it was worse there) - So, that was a huge thing that happened 20 years before the Civil Rights movement, etc. -
Then, he noted Hollywood's awareness of AIDS, which I truly believe were it not for Elizabeth Taylor and her tireless efforts would have been largely ignored far longer than it was. Finally, I think he was commenting on his flim and how it will raise awareness to politics, which Hollywood has been doing since the Silent era.
So, I conclude that though there is room for significant improvement, Clooney correctly concluded Hollywood and the Academy Awards are somewhat ahead of the curve.

That's generally true. A character is worked by the director's vision of how he wants to see a character. However, that's why he casts a certain actor...to bring it to life. I've brought my own ideas of a character into the mix that a director never thought of and actually likes. It really is a collaboration. Writer's don't have much leadway in what happens once filming begins, in fact they get alot of rewrites during filming. Especially if a way a line is written that, say, just doesn't work or sounds odd once spoken as opposed to written.
Another very hard aspect of film acting over stage acting is continuity. First day of filming could be the last scene of a film. Gathering up emotions and being spot on immediately without that momentum of character build-up you get on stage is really difficult. Knowing how hard PSH worked on Capote really blew me away. He really deserved his Oscar. I was also rooting for Capote for BP.

All good points. I'm not sure I can give Hollywood the credit on AIDS that Clooney did, but you're probably right that things would have been even worse without the work of a couple of champions in Hollywood.
