He's getting slammed all over the media, but I thought he was hilarious. Loved the ads and hearing Stephen Colbert's voice in them. Hee!
The audience aren't used to a funny host, I guess...they didn't know what to do with themselves. ;)
I agree. I'm not going to listen or reading any more reviews, because they don't know what they're talking about. A lot of the reviews I've read/heard are based on the fact that the audience (a/k/a "stiffs with sticks up their butts") weren't very responsive to him. Apparently, audience reaction is more important to critics then the actual performance. Hell, many of the reviewers probably didn't even pay much attention to Stewart himself.

I actually thought Kim Basinger was really, really good in LA Confidential, although I would have gone for Julianne Moore in Boogie Nights.

All good points. I'm not sure I can give Hollywood the credit on AIDS that Clooney did, but you're probably right that things would have been even worse without the work of a couple of champions in Hollywood.
I was trying to google a list of all African American actors nominated, but cannot find one. It would be interesting to see.
Regarding AIDS, Hollywood on the whole did not really know how to handle that crisis, which to its credit, neither did the world in say 1980-81. I remember that era and thinking at like 13 or 14 years old that we were all going to die becuase it spread by air or saliva. There was not really much info. out there and you had to did for it because there was no 24 cable news and no internet.
Here is a pretty cool article about the famous Hudson Dynasty kiss and how it helped raise awareness and educate people.
http://www.theallineed.com/news//0510/019822.htm
Rock Hudson: Movie star who galvanised the fight against AIDS
An ailing and skeletal shadow of the movie star who had for decades hidden his homosexuality from his adoring public, announced he was battling the terrifying virus just two months before it took his life at the age of 59.
"I can at least know my own misfortune has had positive worth," Hudson said on his deathbed, shortly before the disease overcame him on October 2, 1985.
The shocking announcement on July 25, just two months and 10 days before his death, changed the public perception of the disease forever by putting a familiar face to AIDS.
"He was the first person worldwide and in the US that the average American citizen could identify as someone who had AIDS," Craig Thompson, executive director, AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), told AFP.
Or as E-Online put it: "Until then, in the minds of the mainstream, AIDS was still the province of sodomites, Haitians, junkies and other marginalized people, not upstanding Americans like movie stars."
Hudson, who was born Roy Harold Scherer Jr. in Winnetka, Illinois in 1925, made his movie debut in 1948's "Fighter Squadron" and rose quickly to become one of Hollywood's most sought after actors.
In the 1950s and 60s he starred in a string of romantic comedy's with Doris Day and became an iconic heartthrob. His most memorable role was opposite his friend Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean in the epic 1956 film "Giant."
But his homosexuality remained a tightly-guarded secret. "In those times, if it was known that he was homosexual, it would have ruined his career," said Hudson's friend, famed US newspaper columnist Liz Smith.
Studios chiefs rallied and arranged for him to marry studio secretary Phyllis Gates in 1955.
For three decades, Hudson made women swoon by maintaining a carefully-crafted public image. Until he revealed he had AIDS, that is.
The announcement, made by his publicist while he was receiving experimental treatment in Paris, came at a great personal price for a man who had spent his life maintaining his screen persona as it also revealed his true sexuality.
"I hope I die of a heart attack before they find out," Hudson said when he was diagnosed.
At the time, just 12,000 people, mostly gay men in San Francisco and New York, had been diagnosed with the disease that would become a global pandemic, and little was known about it.
"You'd go to parties, and people would have really negative things to say about how afraid they were of getting AIDS from shaking hands with somebody," Liz Smith told AFP. "I mean, people were just ignorant," she said.
But Hudson's admission would help shatter misconceptions about the disease and helped portray sufferers as victims and not as plague spreaders.
But the immediate reaction to the announcement was far from positive. In late 1984, Hudson had guest starred in the hit US television series "Dynasty," passionately embracing co-star Linda Evans in one episode.
The announcement that he had AIDS sent the world's press into a frenzy over whether Evans could have been infected with the deadly virus.
"This kiss with Linda Evans: the transmission by saliva was debated and continues to be debated all the way up to this day. I don't think the people's reaction was necessarily overreaction," Thompson said.
Evans was one of the few people at the time who was not angry at Hudson, saying he held back during the passionate scene for fear of infecting her.
But the cast and crew were alarmed Hudson's physical decline and his sudden inability to remember his lines.
After his treatment in France, Hudson flew back to California to die. "It was shocking and horrible," Liz Smith recalled.
But while his death marked a huge loss for cinema and Hudson's friends, it warned the world of the looming danger AIDS posed the world.
"He was so beloved," said the APLA's Thompson. He was one of those people behind the scenes that Hollywood genuinely liked," he said explaining that Hudson's death spurred celebrities and governments into joining the fight against AIDS.
Elizabeth Taylor, who devoted most of the last two decades to the AIDS crusade, summed up Hudson's contribution to the fight shortly after her friend's death: "Please God, he has not died in vain."
___________________________________________________________
In the end, everyone could have done more. However, I think through Elizabeth Taylor (and others), so much good was done and so many lives were saved by prevention.

Besides Boogie Nights, I thought her performance in Far From Heaven was Oscar-worthy. Of course, Nicole won that year, so it could be worse. But Moore was very, very deserving.

I also liked Jamie Foxx (LOVED the peacock blue shirt.) Kidman - I liked it at first, then the bodice looked toomuch like a wedding dress to me when she was presenting. Michelle Williams was brave to pick that yellow/orange, but it worked OK. In general, waaaaay too much black (Felicity, Swank, Latifah, Weiss) and nude colors (Uma, Reese, Kidman, Naomi Watts) for my taste. I prefer color.

THANKS!!!!!!
Here is what it said:
African-American Notables:
There have only been fourteen African-American nominations for Best Actor. Three actors (Poitier, Freeman, and Washington) were nominated twice (or more) for the top award:
Sidney Poitier, nominated for The Defiant Ones (1958)
Sidney Poitier, nominated (and winning) for Lilies of the Field (1963)
James Earl Jones, nominated for The Great White Hope (1970)
Paul Winfield, nominated for Sounder (1972)
Dexter Gordon, nominated for 'Round Midnight (1986)
Morgan Freeman, nominated for Driving Miss Daisy (1989)
Denzel Washington, nominated for Malcolm X (1992)
Laurence Fishburne, nominated for What's Love Got to Do With It (1993)
Morgan Freeman, nominated for The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Denzel Washington, nominated for The Hurricane (1999)
Will Smith, nominated for Ali (2001)
Denzel Washington, nominated (and winning) for Training Day (2001)
Don Cheadle, nominated for Hotel Rwanda (2004)
Jamie Foxx, nominated (and winning) for Ray (2004)
In total, there have only been 17 different African-American performers nominated for the top award (either Best Actor or Best Actress). In all films considered for Academy Awards from 1927/8 up through year 2004 films, performances by black actors/actresses received only 45 acting nominations (in either lead or supporting roles) if one counts West African Djimon Hounsou's Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2003. Only ten awards have been won by African-Americans in both lead and supporting categories (three Best Actor, one Best Actress, four Best Supporting Actor, and two Best Supporting Actress).
Four/five of the 20 acting nominees in 2004 were African-American nominees, besting the record of three nominated blacks that occurred in three different years: in 2001 (the year that both Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won Oscars), in 1985 when three were nominated for The Color Purple (1985), and in 1972 when Diana Ross was nominated for Lady Sings the Blues (1972) and Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield were nominated for Sounder (1972). Jamie Foxx also set a record for being the first black to debut as a nominee in two categories in the same year, lead and supporting, for Ray (2004) and Collateral (2004).
Only four black performers have won the Oscar in the lead category (three Best Actor, one Best Actress). Only three African-American actors have won the Best Actor Oscar:
Sidney Poitier for Lilies of the Field (1963)
Denzel Washington for Training Day (2001)
Jamie Foxx for Ray (2004)
Denzel Washington is the only black actor nominated five times for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor. He is the only black actor to have won two competitive Oscars (as Best Supporting Actor for Glory (1989) and as Best Actor for Training Day (2001)).
The first time that two African-American actors were nominated for Best Actor in the same year was in 2001:
Will Smith for Ali (2001)
Denzel Washington for Training Day (2001)
This also re-occurred in 2004, when black actors Don Cheadle (for Hotel Rwanda (2004)) and Jamie Foxx (for Ray (2004)) were nominated for Best Actor. Morgan Freeman's Best Supporting Actor win for Million Dollar Baby (2004), paired with Jamie Foxx's Best Actor win for Ray (2004), made it only the second time blacks won two of the four acting prizes [the first time was in 2001 with Halle Berry and Denzel Washington. It was the first time that African-American actors won both of their acting categories.]
_________________________________________________________________
Then:
African-American Notables:
There have been only seven African-American actresses nominated for Best Actress. All nominees were nominated only once:
Dorothy Dandridge, nominated for Carmen Jones (1954)
Diana Ross, nominated for Lady Sings the Blues (1972)
Cicely Tyson, nominated for Sounder (1972)
Diahann Carroll, nominated for Claudine (1974)
Whoopi Goldberg, nominated for The Color Purple (1985)
Angela Bassett, nominated for What's Love Got to Do With It (1993)
Halle Berry, nominated (and winning) for Monster's Ball (2001)
In total, there have only been 17 different African-American performers nominated for the top award (either Best Actor or Best Actress). In all films considered for Academy Awards from 1927/8 up through year 2004 films, performances by black actors/actresses received only 45 acting nominations (in either lead or supporting roles), if one counts West African Djimon Hounsou's nomination in 2003. Only one African-American actress has ever won the Best Actress Oscar:
Halle Berry (with her first nomination) for Monster's Ball (2001)
_____________________________________________
I did not get the supporting actor and actress ones.
In the end, I think it reflects a progression ahead of the population. But, I wish it would go faster. Interestingly and hitting on what Chili mentioned earlier, if the studios do not put them up for it in a part, they cannot be nominated and, sadly, all black films do not sell as well or are comedy, which rarely gets the statute.

So who didn't know that they'd give the "Best Picture" award to any nominee other than 'Brokeback Mountain'?
A realistic portrayal of the inner and outer turmoil experienced by two men struggling with their love for each other as it stands in stark opposition to the rigid societal expectations of what it means to be a "man"?? In our current political climate, I'd have eaten my hat if it had won.
With all the talk of "Liberal Hollywood," the people casting their votes for the Oscar Awards aren't truly progressive. They played it as safe as possible while trying to appear as if they're actually forward-thinkers.

Well what is there, about 6000 members? I'm sure there was a good spread amongst the voters. A lot of these people move in the same circles and no doubt openly discuss the nominations. But even if the whole voting process is democratic it doesn't mean to say the counting is. How many people actually have access to the results? That's what I would like to know.
I'm not the world's greatest conspiracy theorist but I thought to myself, could a voting system be manipulated to change the outcome of a result in America? And then I remembered who was in the White House and how he got there....

Food for thought - from Chris Garcia's article in our local paper:
Best picture in 1970 went to "Midnight Cowboy," which at the time was rated X. Jon Voigt was nominated for playing a male prostitute whose gimmick was dressing up as a - what else? - a cowboy.
1976-Al Pacino was nominated for best actor in the best picture nominee "Dog Day Afternoon." He played a bi-sexual hoodlum who robbed a bank to finance his lover's sex change operation. The lover was played by Chris Sarandon, who got a nod for best supporting actor.
William Hurt won the best actor Oscar in 1986 for his vivid and sympathetic performance as a gay prisoner in "Kiss of the Spider Woman," which was nominated for best picture.
while the dress is pretty, i didnt care for the cut...
it made her tits lopsided and pudged one of them
THANK YOU!!! I felt so bad for her left tit, it was all squashed in.:( The dress itself was lovely but perhaps on someone not so well endowed.
IMO, the best dressed was Michelle Williams - the colour was just breathtaking, the cut was unusual and had quite the accessory on her arm.:)

the lame poser version above or the metalhead lead singer of the band "Wicked Wisdom"?
Brian, I've been meaning to ask you if they're any good. Have you heard any of their stuff?
As for Jada, the arms are too much IMO. I'm a little old school, but I don't think women look that good when they're super ripped. Well that and I really don't like the fact that she's a racist. So yeah, I don't like Jada at all.

"No"...Just another faceless "Nu Metal" band in a world of metal bands (Sadly, Jada is the weakest link in Wicked Wisdom...Not to mention Nu-Metal is now a dead trend in music. WW was the worse band on the 2005 Ozzfest roster)
Wicked Wisdom will never be confused with the God Forbid (Another pre-dominantly African American metal band, Who added a more traditional metal sound to their overall flavor)

Exactly HOW difficult (and a stretch of the imagination) is it to play a real life person? Maybe the Academy needs to make another category for "biographical interpretation". Heath Ledger was robbed.
What? Do you think it's easier to portray a real person on which everybody has already a personal image, than to create in total freedom a fictional character?
Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of the best American actors (probably the best of his generation) it was time he got some recognition, and he totally nailed Capote, IMO.
By the way, Ang Lee won and that was the important for me.

Yep, she's racist. There was an article awhile back in I think Glamour magazine and she started going off about how she "can't trust white women" and how she's always really suspicious of white women in general, what their agenda is, blablabla. Oh, that's real nice, is that what you're teaching your kids? Christ, if she said that about ANY other group of people she would have been crucified. Like if she couldn't trust Muslim women or Indian women or gay women, it would've been a major issue, but those little comments of hers went unnoticed and it really chaffed me. So yeah, I don't like Jada. Or her freaky man arms.

Oh I'm proud of my freaky man-arm hatred...that **** is wrong. There's nothing wrong with some nice arm tone - which I am completely lacking...but when a woman's arms are all ropey and veiny and bulging without flexing I can't help but kinda wretch. My apologies if you have ropey Madonna arms.

They're not ropy, they're more bulky and muscly. Good cuts, round upper arm muscle.
I'm really against girls who think muscles on other girls look bad. Guess this is the end of our friendship. How sad. My arms were my favorite part of my body.
Although, I'm against girls with no muscle definition or bulk. Girls with straight, nearly shapeless legs and arms, flat butts. Just general non muscly-ness. Perhaps it will turn out that we are even.

See, here's how they were when i was thin and working out a lot. You may want to glance quickly if you are very sensitive. To be fair, I am flexing them. :D
Ready? Don't be scared...try not to scream:laugh: ....I tried to make it smaller, but it didn't work....

flattery is awesome.
Just a little note to say that I watched the show twice yesterday (!) and I loved Jon Stewart as the host. I absolutely hate the Daily Show, but I thought he was very funny at the Oscars.
Now, as to the awards
I was very happy about Reese Witherspoon and George Clooney (even though I would have preferred it if he won Director- loved his speech btw).
Ohter than that, there was no category that had any surprise element and that makes the show a bit boring to me.
I knew PSH win for Capote, Ang Lee also and I wasn't that surprised about Crash. There was too much hype lately and it is not so rare anymore to "split" Director and Picture. I haven't seen BBM or Crash yet, but from what I have read and seen so far, I have the feeling that Crash is not what I would call a great movie. But I haven't always agreed with the Academy's voting (*cough* Gladiator, Beautiful Mind *cough*), so well...
On another note, I would like to say something about actors portraying real characters: I think PSH is a very good and talented actor, but yes, I DO believe that playing a real person is easier than creating a whole new character from scratch, and make it believable and worth watching. I don't mean to say that it comes down to "better" or "worse" acting - it is just different. It's a whole other thing to create someone new, with believable reaction and another thing to pick up an existing person's reactions and facial expressions and reproduce them on screen. It might be hard, it might be difficult, it might be something that only good actors can do, but IMO IT IS JUST NOT ACTING. I am not particularly talking about PSH, because I do believe that he went far beyond that (as well as Joachin Pheonix as Johnny Cash) but Jamie Foxx's oscar win for Ray was ridiculous to say the least.
That's why I was so glad about Reese (and would have also been about Joachin Phoenix had he won). They both totally owned the screen and never - not for one second- did they give the impression that they were just mimicking a real person's expressions&attitude.
It also reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow's win in Shakespeare in love (fictional character) over Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth (not fictional at all). I know many people thought it was a joke, but if you think about it, it was totally deserved (that comes from someone who thinks that Gwyneth is a lousy actress). IMO it is easy for a normal actor, with medium acting skills to portray an historical person, where everything is sort of given and you have something to refer to. What is not easy, is to make a fictional character believable and not laughable.

I loved "The Last Emporer" - in fact, I rented it recently to remind me of when I was in Beijing last year at this time.
I also saw "The White Countess" last night at the local art cinema. It is Shanghai in the 30's and I got a little weepy seeing that beautiful city again as I was there last year as well. The movie, however, is painfully glacierlike in movement, though worth renting as most Merchant Ivory productions are to these eyes. Here is the link to it http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808672942/info
Also, when you star Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson, Lynn Redgrave, Vanessa Redgrave, and John Wood - -you are worth checking out
