View Full Version : My misadventures in Ebay

I have a had a bad experience with Ebay regarding A Stevie Nicks purchase I made.

Last October I bought a dvd with a collection of her various Tv Appearances and such on Ebay. I got it pretty quickly and was disapointed because the Dvd was littered with mistakes. The back insert had the listing of what was on the dvd but it was either not in order according to the Dvd menu, or the information such as correct airdates was wrong. I contacted the seller through ebay and he sent a repsonse that he isn't the one who made this dvd and that a friend is the one who has the dvd 's and makes them for him to sell on Ebay. He acknowledged the mistakes and offered to have it fixed and have a replacement one sent shortly. When all was said and done I finally got a replacement copy but once again it is littered with mistakes. For starters they fixed the innaccuracies on the Back Cover, but the DVD menu is still wrong. The problem is that he has the dates wrong and the title menu is wrong. For example when you load the dvd and select the first item which is supossed to be the 94 Lettermen appearance (according to the title under the image)it ends up being Jay Leno 98. I contacted him again and this is the response I got including the email I sent him.

Item: STEVIE NICKS VIDEO COLLECTION VOLUME 1 DVD - RARE (6443756201)
This message was sent after the listing closed.

Hello

I hate to be a pain ,but upon trying to watch the DVD it appears that once again the DVD is all full of mistakes. The back cover insert was fixed but he dvd menu is exactly the same. Normally I wouldn't care but since I did pay for the item I would like a copy that is mistake free.

Sorry to be a pain

Thank you

Matt

Dear Matt,

I'm afraid you are mistaken. The title menu was completely re-done according to our research. The one error we did find after we completed was that the Aresenio Hall was taped in 1991 (which is correct on the DVD jacket), but it says 1981 on the title menu. Unfortunately we are aware of this, but do to the man hours it takes to re-do this we were not willing to make that sacrifice for such a little error at this time, basically because you are the only complaint we have gotten on this throughout the entire process, even before it was re-done the first time. It seems that you are still unsatisfied, so what I am willing to do is if you return both DVDs that you have been sent to me I will fully refund your purchase and return postage. If this is what you would like to do please let me know. In the future I would advise you not to buy anything like this from anyone. We've had a great number of our customers tell us that we do the best job they've seen in bringing this footage together, and if you have such deep-rooted complaints for our product, I would hate to see your reaction for some of the stuff that is out there.

Thanks,
Matthew

I feel cheated and burned. I know he says he will gladly give me a refund, but that is not the point. I feel that that whoever is making these DVD'S is making faulty DVD's with mistakes ,but selling them anyway. I guess I learned my lesson.

Your thoughts?

Be happy he's offering you a refund and don't buy cheap bootleg DVDs off eBay anymore?

I know it's nice to have a bunch of stuff all in one place for your viewing pleasure, I'm sure most of these appearances are up on YouTube, right? Or if you really want a collection, I'm sure someone around here has all those appearances and would be willing to trade you a VHS or DVD.

Next time try just doing a trade for the DVDs. Sure there are always going to be a few errors but it will be a lot less $ for the trouble.

hi all...i've purchased several boots over the past year and matt warring has always reinbursed me if i wasn't happy with what i rec'd. i did notice that his volume 1,2,3 and 4 are no longer on ebay. apparently if u complain to ebay u can get a refund from paypal. it takes about 1 week for the response to come thru but they'll credit ur card that u bought it with. they also suggest u contact the seller and let him know which is what uve done. as far as not buying boots, as i said earlier, stevie needs to make more dvd's and we wouldn't have to buy boots and when an original comes out we buy that as well so there's no real harm done. pat (long time fan)

It is frustrating that Stevie doesn't have more DVDs released, but I trade DVDs as opposed to buying them. This has been a touchy subject for years, but I prefer not to help anyone else make money off of Stevie & her work. Sharing is one thing, selling for profit is quite another, especially if the seller is shady & not accurately describing the product.

This is all excellent advice, but what if you have nothing to trade? I've bought off eBay, with success, because I want to see all these performances.

^ I don't mean to sound like I'm judging anyone, I've bought from ebay in the past too. It's just a choice I've made to no longer do so because I don't agree with it.

At first, I did a few 2:1 trades (you send twice as many blank discs as you need back, they keep the blanks as reimbursement for time spent) with nice traders who were willing to help a new kid, and after I got a few things I started trading with others & it grew from there. It's not difficult, once you get started.

Thanks, I don't feel judged, I just don't know how the trading thing works. This is a good idea.

You just don't kn ow what you're getting off ebay. I recently bought a outtakes DVD from the 1977 Rumours tour. Half of it was Stevie putting on makeup and rumaging through an enormous bag of combs, brushes, lipstick, etc. Why anyone would even film this is strange.

I had a bad experience with an overseas purchase on Ebay once and never got the stuff I paid for. ABout all you can do is put a bad mark on the seller. I just chalked it up to experience I guess.

You can add concert tickets to this list.

I got robbed of a whole lot of money on supposed 9th row seats to FM's show in Marysville. The seller originally purchased the tickets through the Ticketfast option at Ticketmaster. With this option the tickets are emailed to you as a PDF file and you print them on your home computer. The problem with this is that the purchaser can fwd this file to anybody - making fraud really easy. So apparently the seller took these four tickets and sold them to several people, so when I arrived at the gate and they scanned my "tickets" I was told that the tickets had already been used and I was basically SOL. No telling if the people who actually got in were other ebay buyers or if it was the seller.

Long story short: I contacted the seller who claimed to know nothing about the situation and that she had received no other complaints about it but that she would "look into it." I also filed a complaint with Ebay - the result? Nothing happened. I didn't get any kind of reimbursement and as far as I know that seller is still on Ebay.

interesting article in the New York Times about fakery on eBay and how some companies and consumers are fighting to make eBay accountable for such things.

Yeah, we still saw the show. I went to the box office and bought a new pair of tix that were A LOT farther back. Then my friend got the bright idea of using the fraudulent Ticketfast tickets to get past security and go to the front of the stage (actually his idea was to go find the people in our seats and start a fight, but I told him I'd kill him if he got us thrown out). So I still got to drool over Lindsey from the same vantage point that I would have if the tickets were legit, but it cost me EVEN MORE MONEY to do it.

eBay is always risky. I still love it tho. Luckily, I've never had a really bad experience, although I did have issues when I tried to buy a guitar overseas for my brother, but it was resolved. I agree with others that you should attempt to trade and I know, from experience, how intimidating and hard it can be sometimes, but once you find a nice trader who doesn't mind helping out newbies, you're set. I used to have trade site but never had time to update it. I'm always willing to help out anyone if I can.

I traded for a copy of that too, I haven't seen all of it but a lot of it is just .... everyday stuff? Really strange. A couple of funny quotes though.

And Miss Vicky -- that is really, really bad luck. Dear God. At least you did get to the front, well done on that. I'll bear your warning in mind....

i have always been lucky both buying & selling on ebay w/ the exception of a few ****ty grainy photos sold to me, everything i have bought was what was advertised~ i have had GREAT luck getting tix for the "say you will" shows~ until recently...i really wanted to take the hubby to the rolling stones concert this past weekend~ i have watched the newspaper & ebay for months & months, also i have listened to trivia on the radio & tried to be the "right" caller:] , well finally i found 2 great seats, the girl selling them had it written tickets in the auctions title, but farther down it said 1, then again, farther down it said 2 tix~ so i emailed her 3 times, (she also has 100% feedback) & asked her over & over that it was 2 tix, she continually reassured me it was for 2~ so i bid & won, & when she sent an invoice, she sheepishly wrote in it was for 1~ needless to say i was 1 hot chick~ thank ooodness i saved every email & printed out her ebay screen where she was selling the tix~ she saw that i also have 100% feedback & threatened to leave me a neg~ she made every excuse about why she did this~ but i didn't pay & said go ahead w/ the neg, i would be sending ebay an email of all of the stuff she had lied to me on~ & i haven't heard a word from her~ hopefully she crawls back under that rock... :p

most traders *cough cough* will do either a 2:1 or a B&P trade with those who have nothing to trade in return.

What is B&P?

is where you provide the Blank media (The "B" of B&P) and the Postage (The "P" of B&P) for a safe return of the items that you would like.

Much easier way to obtain than CDR's/DVD's instead of paying some putz on eBay (And elsewhere) for 'em. Most traders will do a B&P for those who dont have anything to offer in return.
