My husband just bought an enormous TV. I am sick over it. Don't get me wrong, he was smart about it (did his research, got a no-interest payment plan, saved up more than half the $$$) and I've sure spent my fair share of $$$ on Mac shows.
But a 50" TV?!?! WTF? I don't get it. Yeah, yeah, HDTV, bigger & better, blah blah blah. I still don't get it. I just think it's a collosal waste of $$$ (yes, my Mac shows, don't remind me) when we could have used it for something else (investments, savings, home improvements.)
Do any of you have huge TVs? Are TV shows/video games/DVDs really that much better? Will seeing The Dance on the giant TV blow me away? :D How long will I continue to have this sick feeling in my stomach about paying so much for a TV (a TV, for God's sake, a friggin' TV!) :(

We had a 60 inch at my mother's house, talk about a complete waste of money. I didn't think it was worth it at all, obviously you can see more detail, but really isn't a 30 inch tv large enough? To top at all off, we had a million problems with it, the line that we had boughten it off of turned out to be a complete line of lemons, and we had to upgrade yet again to ANOTHER tv. It was ridiculous. but watching FM on it was fab, i won't lie

OMG!!!:blob2: :blob2: You are soooo lucky. I love big screen tv's. Our's is pewnie (is that a word?). Did he get the whole sha-bang (with surround sound) we have that and it is awesome! Music dvd's are fantastic, but you have to have surround to get the full affect.

If you have the room for it, why not ? My only problem with big televisions is how they wreak havoc with room design. The only room that should have a tv bigger than 13" is a full on media room or "rec" room. They don't belong in living rooms or bedrooms, unless it is possible to camoflauge them when not in use. I hate it when a room is built around a television. It discourages human interaction and almost prevents intimacy. All the furniture must be placed in relation to being able to see the friggin tv. The focus is on a plastic box rather than the room, the view, or the people in it. Seeing as it is the holiday season, how many people go to a big family gathering, only to have the whole lot gather around and stare at the TV and not even talk to each other ? Thus my point. Hate it.
Off the design soap box !
I'd love to have a media room, but my house isn't broken up that way. One day I may rearrange my office/guest room so that it can accomodate a monster flat screen in the wall. But in the scheme of things, it is WAY down my priority list. I'd rather spend the money on landscaping, lighting, and other improvements. I don't even turn the TV on more than 4-6 hours a week, tops. And that is when I rent movies or watch porn, as I don't have cable or TV reception. It just isn't that important to me.

Is it the big, square, black box type or is it one of those silver, plasma, flat screens that go on the wall? or do those even come that big? plus, they cost like a million bucks.

hehehehe.
Anyway, i don't understand at all, either. Not really even a smidge. Well, maybe a smidge, in that way that I understand boys always want dumb toys that I would never see the need for. :)
I would be sick, too. I can only assume you guys don't share finances? Of course, that would mean that that time he was out of work you didn't let him eat your food or live in your house, which I doubt is the case.
I dunno, I'm starting to think it's smarter and smarter for people to keep at least six months worth of savings in their bank in case something happens to their job or some other emergency. (Did Suze Ormand advise that? someone did). And didn't you guys just get a new car? You could've probably saved yourself some interest money by paying that down faster.
I guess sometimes we all buy things that are kinda stupid. Though I think all such purchases in my case have been under $100. Except Mac shows, and we all know that in fact I do need those, so they don't really apply.
Well, he already bought it, guess you might as well start enjoying it. *sigh*

No, it's not a plasma, it's a DLP (a newer projection technology.) And we do share finances, but he worked a side job all summer & saved all the $$$ for this specific reason. We have savings, and we'll still be able to pay the bills & everything. I'm just annoyed, I guess. Seems so wasteful.

Oh. Well, if he worked another job just for that reason... It's not as bad, then. Still, I think it's strange. Sounds like he really, really wanted the TV, though! Who can explain the toy hungry brains of boys? Not me.

Exactly! He was working to help my dad (installing siding on houses) but he said from the get-go that this money was going to a TV. I think my Mac expenditures MAY have been mentioned as a defense. :o He initially said a 42" was what he was after, but the 50" was on sale so he had to go for that one.

Paula, I can totally see your feelings about "OMG, the money could have been used in so many other ways...." But I've got to say, I love that he worked the 2nd job to save for it. So it wasn't TOTALLY irresponsible. It's a luxury - a total extravagance - but he didn't take away from the day-to-day income to do it. That's pretty admirable (Hmmm... I already know from photos that he's a hottie - does he have a brother?). I think my stomach might sieze up in horror everytime I caught sight of it for the first little while, too. But I'm sure watching LIB or The Dance a few times will help. I think it's all okay - he has his weakness - you have yours. He supports you going to all the FM and SN shows, right? :) (Hmm, and again, I find myself wondering if he has a brother).

Paula, its a guy thing. For them, bigger is always better! It just is what it is. Plus, you really can't say anything after flying to Vegas just to see Stevie. Sorry, but that is true. :xoxo: One person's extravagance is another's need. Okay not really a need but you know what I mean. I guess you could look at it another way, as a symbol of his hard work? Then put FM on!

I have a 32" in my bedroom and a 46" in the living room. I think 42" to 46" is a good size. Then again, the hi def tubes are nice too...but the largest is a 36". The 50" Pioneer plasma model that best buy sells is SUPER nice.

I bought my husband a 56 inch for our 1 year anniversary. I'm still paying on it and that was over a year ago *L* but I did get free financing, so no biggie. It was something he has wanted for 5 years. I figured, I got the dining room table/chair I wanted, the dog, the house, the couches. That was the least I could do. and YES....FM is awesome on it!!! :D

I have a 56", that I love. Believe it or not, it was GIVEN to me, by my drummer's uncle. He had gotten religious, and no longer watched much TV. It did need a repair though, and he didn't want to fool with it. But, I know a technician, who worked at RCA. He fixed it for $20!
My $20, 56" TV!!! It looks great! Deal of a lifetime......

My dad and I went in halv-sies (half-sies? LOL) on a big screen TV a couple of years ago. Went to Best Buy and got it. It's 54" I believe. I figured most folks had them these days because they aren't as expensive as they used to be. Maybe I'm wrong.
Wow, Homer, that sounds like a MAJOR deal you got!
I'm a total dude when it comes to electronic stuff. I love big TV's, DVD players, stereo systems, etc. LOL

We bought a 46 inch.... I love it! I think I've had it about 4 years now. I think it's just right. I have a friend who has a 60 inch (65?) It's almost as tall as I am, and I'm 5' 3".... It's huge, but I think it distorts the picture. I hate to go over there and watch movies.

I have the 52 inch flat screen so Hubby can enjoy football.
The ballast went out at the beginning of football season and he said he did not care how much it cost to fix, must have back in operation immediately!

We have a 60 inch. I thought it was craxy when we first got it, but now it seems like everyone has a huge HD TV. It seems unnatural to watch TV on anything less then 30 inches now. I know that sounds crazy, but it is true!

Their lifespan is about half of a "normal" TV. LCD's are the way to go, if you're going the HDTV route...their lifespan is about the same as a "normal" TV.

Color my cynical, but I refuse to spend over $300 for a television. I wear glasses, so "the detail" will probably be lost on me the second dust lands on my glasses (which is usually 1.5 seconds). However, even if I had 20/15 vision, I wouldn't do it because the shows still suck. Yeah, I want to see somebody eat a pig penis on Fear Factor in crystal-clear HDTV. And, HDTV TOTALLY kills Skinemax. You can see those implant scars WAY too clearly.

I love electronics. Always have. I just wish I had the money to afford more of them!!!
