Apparently it's been brought to my attention the Homer McVie started a thread here about me, and it wasnt very friendly. I cant seem to find it. Was it dumped? I'd really like to know why he apparently has such a dislike for me. If he does, Oh well, I'm not losing any sleep over it.

I have NOTHING against you, David. I can tell that you're a very kind person. I said that I think that you post too much(without even mentioning your name). And that I didn't think a comment on every single thread was necessary, especially when MANY of your posts don't say much, except for, "thanks for posting". See, we assume there's a new post to be read in the threads, and, much of the time, it's just a "thanks for posting" post. I think that's a waste of our time. JUST MY OPINION, although that's apparently not allowed here.
When you really have something to say, by all means, say it!
Take care, David. And I mean that.

You seem like a sweetie of a guy and I'd love to meet ya one of these days. I'm sure when FM rolls back through the USA, we'll probably meet at a show. :)

I agree with Brandon, I don't think Homer meant to be rude or hateful, he was just expressing his opinion about posting on threads with just an "lol" or "thanks", etc. I get frustrated sometimes when I'm trying to quickly read through stuff and when I get to the end of a thread, it's mostly those type of posts, but whatevah. Sometimes, it seems like threads are made up of nothing but chat back and forth (inside jokes and such) and that gets frustrating too. Just gotta deal, ya know.

Bikerchic, that's really sweet and true.

One thing for certain...David absolutely loves Fleetwood Mac. Rightly so. You can count on him to be spreading the FM/Solo love on "The What Are You Listening To Right Now Thread?"

But hey...the warm and fuzzy feeling of December is now here...so, David, you just go on being who you are and everything will be fine.

Hey David you already know that I think that you are a sweetie. I really don't know who Homer was talking about. There are a lot more important things to worry about IMO then how people post. I am pretty sure that someone once started a thread called "If you have over 5000 Posts you are a Loser" or something like that. I think that was pretty insensitive. Things like that give The Ledge a bad name.

There are a lot of posters on The Ledge who sometimes I have no idea or care to know what the %&$# they are talking about. I usually just scroll through those posts. My main reason to come to The Ledge is to get Fleetwood Mac news. Half the time I could care less about Chit Chat.

However, I do think that overall there are a lot of great people here. The best part of The Ledge is when someone is going through a rough time and the other Ledgies are there for support. I get a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Anyway, I like your posts David. I did not see any problem with them at all. Hopefully we can get to see a Mac or better yet a Lindsey show together.

It's certainly allowed, it was just catty and rude and something that should have been brought up in a PM instead of trying to rally others with your not-so-cryptic post of, "Doesn't anybody else think that you-know-who...?" and then patting yourself on the back in vindication when one or two people agreed with you in private.

Of course, the thread was taken down, giving you ample opportunity to simply take it to PMs, but here we are again!

Good lord. We can't even get a good flame war going here.

All I can say about the whole thing is that it's obvious that Indy Dave has never visited old what's her name's message board. Some of the replies make Minny David's posts seem like poetry.

You poor, poor thing. What is the world coming to when honest people are afraid to insult others in public?

Why exactly are you so intent on turning your problems with the way David posts into a public diatribe? Either put him on ignore, or send him a PM explaining your concerns. What point are you trying to make by running around with your exasperated sighs and your "Woe is me, why can't I take my personal beef with someone to the masses?"

And if you respond to this post at all, don't bother with any of that, "I'm being oppressed, you can see who runs this place!" crap. My positions about the nature of moderated message boards and the entertainment value of random conflict are well-documented. I'm just baffled by your continued rudeness, which at this point is bordering on spitefulness.

Fleetwood Mac fans clearly aren't nerdy enough if so many folks around here are unfamiliar with all these Internet newsgroup/message board terms...

A "flame war" is what happens when an argument or debate on a message board devolves to the point of people just throwing around nasty, personal insults.

The fact that everybody else mentioned Minny Dave by name and said things like "it's obviously [Indy Dave] was talking about..." tells me that even the people who have chastised Indy Dave are being hypocritical. You too were obviously thinking the same thing, otherwise how would you have figured out so quickly who Indy Dave was referring to? I had a list of people, including myself, that I thought he could have been talking about. In other words, get off your high horse already. He just verbalized what YOU too were thinking.

What's especially funny, though, is that it wasn't personal in any way. Nowhere in the post that started the thread was there an assessment of character. Indy Dave was just talking about a behavior that he found annoying. Funnier still is that the perceived "protagonist" and "antagonist" don't have personal issues with each other. It's everybody else who seems to be drawing them into a bigger conflict than what actually exists. It's like two kids not really wanting to fight on a playground, and you people are egging them on. Before you go lecturing Indy Dave on why he should be ashamed of himself, look at your own behavior.

That's lame. What Homer did was the "pull the bandage off as slowly as possible" method of pain, and what Jyqm attempted to do was the "rip it off all at once" method, which, as everybody knows, is far less painful. And less passive aggressive pussy like, too. :woohoo:

Nah, you two were still being remotely civil, at least from what I read. Plus, you actually stuck to the issue. It was all just passive-aggressive sarcasm with heavy emoticon usage (but so it goes on a moderated forum where you can't use certain four-letter words and personal attacks are forbidden). A good flame war needs to have lots of mean-spirited cursing and lots of attacking people's basic human dignity. If the phrase "complete f***ing moron" hasn't been used, then it ain't a proper flame war yet.

That sounds fun, indeed, but how does it possibly resolve anything?

The reason the Ledge has the whole strike system in place and is more heavily moderated is that there was an ongoing 'flame ' type war going on here about 4 years ago ,mostly revolving around a homophobic and misogynistic cybertroll known as the Arizona Ranger. The fracas caused by this creature resulted in this forum (Chit Chat) being closed down for several weeks. While I'll admit there was some entertainment value to be had from arguing with this person ,his homophobia was on a Fred Phelps type level and he was allowed to get away with his nonsense for too long .Now there have been some others that in comparison to AR or1/2 insane IMO maybe should not have been banned ,but I guess these extreme examples of vileness have kind of ruined it for others .

I was amazed that everybody instantly knew who I was referring to, yet chastized me for "dare"ing to mention it. "How dare you!". "We were so nice to you about your dog, and now you dare to post this." Listen, if being nice to me because my dog has cancer means that I give up any freedom of speech, then keep your niceties to yourself, Adolph. I don't want them under that condition.

That's what hilarious. David and I are fine with each other. It's everyone else who wants to censor me. My GAWD, I said that I think he posts too much!!!! Jesus, How DARE I? What a terrible thing to say!!! Off with my head!!! It's everybody else who seems to be drawing them into a bigger conflict than what actually exists. It's like two kids not really wanting to fight on a playground, and you people are egging them on. Before you go lecturing Indy Dave on why he should be ashamed of himself, look at your own behavior.

Exactly, but that won't happen. They're far too PC to be wrong.
BTW, DavidMN and I are completely cool with each other.

Steve, get your ass over to Bloomington! Drinks are on me!

It doesn't seem like you'll understand this, Homie, cause it's already been said, but....
I think the issue is that you mentioned it out loud, where everyone could read it, but were too pussy to just say the person's name. I think most people agreed that you should have either took it to a PM, ie, not mentioned it out loud at all, or if you had to mention it out loud, you should've been man enough to say the person's name. Heck, you posted the most obvious clue ever (as ReFleetwoodmac pointed out) - at that point, what was your purpose in not saying the persons name? It just seems pussy/fraidy cat/passive aggressive at that point.
Yes, I know no one cares and there are no hard feelings between you two, but you seem not to understand why anyone took issue, so I thought I'd help explain. :wavey:

Obviously you weren't around on the FM newsgroup.Apparently you were not around for the Ballad of the Arizona Ranger.I was around for both, & neither one holds a candle to my movie forum, where each week we get several hundred slurs based on race, ethnicity, sex orientation, parentage, education, physical disabilities, mental disabilities, taste, intelligence, number of fingers & toes, verbal posting style, knowledge of movies, knowledge of history, knowledge of politics, knowledge of sports, knowledge of science, knowledge of the nature of knowledge, religion, country of origin, state of origin, county of origin, financial state, politics, etc. etc. etc.

Well, a reliance on any single aspect of language is rarely a good thing, but there certainly nothing intellectually limiting about curse words in and of themselves. They're neither better nor worse than any other word in the language, except they carry an extra charge and can be quite useful to add emphasis or set a certain tone.

But I'll shoot Mamet, Tarantino, Carlin and Burroughs a memo letting them know that you think they're a buncha halfwits with poor vocabularies.

My mother always told me that an intelligent person can find a suitable word without having to rely on profanity. I agree. it takes more mental stretching to say what you want to say without resorting to gutter talk. Sorry, thats just what I believe. An intelligent person probably also could find a suitable word that begins with the letter B, or that has exactly seven letters, or that is an iamb.

I agree. it takes more mental stretching to say what you want to say without resorting to gutter talk. Sorry, thats just what I believe.

Sorry, but it's not correct, at least not in all cases. As with everything, there are contexts when profanity can be appropriate and effective, and other times when it's best not used.

You can send all the memos you want but IMO, profanity certainly doesnt convey class.

No, it sure doesn't. But then, class and intelligence are different things.

Profanity isnt necessary. If you CHOOSE to use it, thats up to you, but it doesnt convey either intelligence OR class. Remember the hoohah when Cheney used the "F" word? or when Bush was heard talking about "asshole reporters"? The use of profanity makes one appear boorish to my mind.

What if I told you that I believe the earth is flat and sits on the back of a giant space turtle? Or that I believe that blacks are an inferior race? Sure I could. I could go out and find a bunch of people who frequently use profanity and give them IQ tests. I'm certainly not going to, but this is clearly a provable or disprovable thing.

Both of those authors wrote in the vernacular of the times. they CHOSE to portray their characters as contemporaries. I dont know how either one actually spoke in day to day discourse, and I doubt you do either.

Ah, well, now you're adding qualifiers. (But you can bet that both of them used plenty of the profane language that showed up in their works in their everyday lives. Nowhere in either Shakespeare or Joyce is use of profanity portrayed as something horribly negative, and more often than not it's used for humor. If they found it funny enough to write down, they probably found it funny enough to say over drinks at the pub. And Joyce in particular was just a dirty, dirty man who absolutely adored potty humor.)

Although in the case of James Joyce, I'd bet he cussed.

So are you saying that James Joyce was unintelligent, or that you're wrong?

(And for the record, I'm not trying to convince you that your personal aversion to profanity is bad or wrong. If you don't like profanity, fine. If you find profanity unclassy, fine. If you prefer not to use profanity, fine. It's the claim that anyone who uses profanity is unintelligent that's wrong, and that's all I'm taking issue with.)

EDIT: Trent Reznor's a pretty smart guy, too. "I want to copulate with you like an animal" just ain't that catchy, though.

No, you're getting what I said mixed up with what YOU are trying to prove. I didnt say intelligent people dont cuss. I said I believed that intelligent people would find an alternative. The key here is the phrase I BELIEVE. In my opinion, intelligent people will find alternatives to cuss words. That is how I guide MYSELF. by the way, I'd be willing to bet that people who cuss frequently probably wouldnt score as high on the vocabulary part....

Im not using qualifiers, Im only stating the obvious. The Irish are known cussers. I dont know about Shakespeare's everyday speech, and Im not about to assume that he was writing his OWN speech. Its pretty well documented that he was portraying the common folk in his writings. And I confess, I enjoy bathroom humor as much as the next person. But I sure as heck wouldnt start throwing around four letter words at a charity function, or a black tie event or any other gathering of upper crusters. As I said earlier, remember the fracas about Cheney's four letter word? or Bush's snide remarks about the asshole reporters? It tended to make those men look boorish and loutish and lets face it: neanderthal.

So are you saying that James Joyce was unintelligent, or that you're wrong?
neither. merely that he is IRISH. cussing comes with the territory. its passing strange to me. Again. I am not saying intelligent people dont ever cuss, only that they can find substitutes for cuss words. And if they are classy as well as intelligent, I betcha dollars to donuts they arent loading their talk with four letter words.

(And for the record, I'm not trying to convince you that your personal aversion to profanity is bad or wrong. If you don't like profanity, fine. If you find profanity unclassy, fine. If you prefer not to use profanity, fine. It's the claim that anyone who uses profanity is unintelligent that's wrong, and that's all I'm taking issue with.) see above. As I stated in an earlier post, I said that it was the standard by which I guided my life and that my mother said that an intelligent person would find a substitute for profanity. I also said Ive cussed in my day but that I wasnt proud of it and that it was in extreme cases.

I still think you're a nice person Homer. :xoxo:

I just didn't agree with your approach. You made it fairly obvious who you were talking about. If his posting style bothered you, I feel you should have taken it to him privately, and not put him out on a limb for others to have a jab at. But, that's only my opinion.

Just out of curiousity, how long was the other thread up before the moderators took it down? Weeks? Hours? Long enough to ensure people got strikes? :rolleyes:As I tried to explain to you, the thread that you're referring to was not initially a violation of our FAQs. I understand that you and your friends were uncomfortable that another friend of yours was being discussed, but, as I also explained, not a single person in that thread was defaming her or harrassing her or belittling her.

At the outset, it was an innocent topic that the average Ledgie would have lost interest in, in no time at all. But the hue and cry which ensued, caused the thread to swell to a dozen pages, and the warnings and strikes occured because folks refused to move on, choosing instead to let the resentment and territorial pissings spill over into other threads.

It was all easily avoidable, and moderators wouldn't have even had to step in.

But, that's only my opinion.I do believe that very same opinion is exactly what most everyone else in the thread was trying to express... but several hammers and a few dozen nails still couldn't manage to drive that particular point home adequately, it seems.

ALL I said was that I thought someone posted too much. I DIDN'T say his name, thinking MAYBE I could get some input as to others thoughts on the matter, without baring all. But, you guys bared all, and proceeded to jump all over me, again, for just saying someone posted too much.
AND, this board is so slanted towards women and gays, I'll bet if I called YOU a pussy, FIVE times in a post, that I'd get a strike. But, that'll never happen in your case. Never happen.
As long as I post within the rules and FAQ's, get over it. Just because you post 10 billion times a day, doesn't mean you own the joint.
Oh, homie. homie, homie, homie. Just because I say my opinions, same as you, and same as you are whining you want to be able to do without people jumping on your case, doesn't mean I think I own the joint. And there's not really anything to get over, honestly. I was just trying to make you understand something, I didn't have any personal stake in it. ie, I didn't care that much.
Hugs and bun,

Amber be Thy Name.
Thy Chit Chat come, Flames Will be done,

Give us your 32.83 posts per day, our daily bread,

And lead us into temptation,
With your hot pics of evil.
For thine is the Ledge, and I need a shower, and fantasies of meeting you in the glory hole, for ever and ever.

I just have to say, it's so funny that you miss him, but that you thought I was "too aggressive" in enquiring why that one thread was closed. And yet, when I enquired why a thread had been closed...You said I was too aggressive.... Weren't you just as aggressive about the Carne? Is it because on this particular point you didn't agree, that you thought it was more wrong? It seems very similar to me, honestly.

Oi, that one really hit you, did it? Again, I did not call you lame.
Hm, yeah, you're not the only one who told me that last thing was a bit 'out of character'. :D ;)
There's a major difference, for me. You weren't banned for what you said, nothing like that, but Carne was. A much appreciated ledgemember, thrown of the board. I thought that was way out of proportion compared to what he'd been doing and it really really pissed me off.
Ok, you probably were really pissed off too, but from my perspective that was unnecessary. You don't always have to blow up just to make a point. (and like I said, I do think you had a good point) I do think the ladies who moderate chitchat here are willing to listen to a good point. (And, hey, they're new to the job, give them some time to learn. )
The great council of mods in the Carne-case however.. not. That situation felt so unfair to me. He got his third strike then. But how did he get his other two strikes? Everyone is so happy and relieved that Arizonaranger is gone now, but at the time, I heard very little support when I got my two strikes for my part in getting him outed for the d*ckhead he is, or any of the others who did. Unfairness followed by unfairness.
And when someone who is a friend, gets treated really unfairly, I get pretty aggressive myself, whether that might be rational in that situation or not. That's just something in my character, I guess.

(I don't think it's a language thing as much as a concentration thing on my part, really :o Hope this was a decent post anyway!)

Okay, yeah, you're right. I mean about Carne. I question your opinion about the unnecessariness of my point. And I question your opinion of "blowing up". And it's cool you said I had a point.
unnecessary? I would beg to differ. I saw moderator fascism in the making. And I didn't think I "blew up". But you are right, I wasn't banned, maybe that makes it different. In my head, though, i saw a clear double standard. Ie, if some dude says this stuff, it's cool and right, but if some girl does, it's "too aggressive". Honestly, every Carne post practically was a "blow up".
I just find it laughable that anyone who thought he was "fine" would call anything I post "too aggressive".
But that's okay, I'm used to the double standard by now. And you are right, I haven't been banned.
And for the record, I don't think he should have been banned, either. But I also don't think a girl should be called out for being aggressive when a guy saying the same thing or worse would have merely been accused of being his usual asshole self, ie, "boys will be boys". That smacks of BS.
And your post was very good, and I look forward to the day when I can be called your friend, and therefore worthy of defense. :)
Uh, I don't know about that thing where you got strikes, so I can't comment, though off the cuff it does seem lame.

I honestly could not find what was worthy of 3 strikes in the debates in the threads Carne was involved in .As for the Arizona Ranger like I mentioned earlier in this thread it was his twisted antics that caused the strike system to come into use in the first place.Maybe he just should have been banned right away when it came to light just how deep his twistedness went. Then the people who helped expose him would not have gotten strikes or been banned too.

Carne could be pretty out of line, I did not always like that. I just never thought it was enough to actually kick him off. IMO, you only do that with the really ugly trolls.
Could be mod fascism in the making, could be. There's other ways of finding that out than starting a row, though. That would actually make it worse if it's there, I think.

I think I quoted Amber as I was reading thru the thread and you posted an answer later on. I dont see what the problem is? I tend to respond to posts as I go thru a thread, and apparently you think its better to read the whole thing first? The only problem with that is you lose track of the places you want to quote...and sometimes (I dont know about you but its true for me with my ADHD) I even forget what I was going to say. So, I quote as I make my way thru. sorry if you thought I was picking on you. I was actually talking about double standards in general, not necessarily your posts..

The countless arguments I got into and the countless threads I made just to attack people's character gave me no such strikes. But then I found the perfect strike producing weapon. I don't know if I have any strikes. It wouldn't shock me if I did, what, with all the heresy, blasphemy, inciting, sexual innuendo, link posting, posting pictures of very questionable taste, using colorful language, using the term "chiffonhead" on more than five occasions, being a sarcastic smart-ass, and generally pissing people off. At this point, I'm more scared of a lightening strike than a strike on the Ledge.

I was actually envisioning the innercity ghetto types who talk NOTHING but curse words in my other statement, but ok. you got me there. you obviously took the time to learn all those OTHER words Im promoting. but tell me: would you curse in a social situation amongst, say, upper management? or your superiors? or any occasion where people dress fancy and eat fancy and drive fancy? do you hear many others who do? and if so, how are they perceived by the rest of the crowd?
Just curious....

I know this has all been resolved in later posts, but I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you by not answering. :)

I happen to work for a church, so cursing obviously isn't part of my vocabulary there (unless it's just me and the minister, and then we let fly). But when I'm angry, no matter where I am, I will curse. Mother f*cker is my favorite choice. I would never even want to use another non-curse word. I thought we were talking about cursing in anger, though. As far as the other occasions you mentioned, no- I would not curse. I'm not saying I'm genius level intelligent, and I'm definitely not bragging, but I scored a 680 out of 800 on the GRE (and yet I scored a 320 on the math section- sigh). I just don't see the correlation between intelligence and cursing. I think if someone just (frequently) randomly curses in conversation, it doesn't make them unintelligent; perhaps it's more habit than anything else.

The Irish swear just as much as the English or Americans in my experience.
I'm not a fan of swearing but some of the some intelligent people I've even met have had a penchant for swear words. I used to work with a girl who was Oxbridge educated and was an amazing writer and her favourite word was c**t. It's just how you were brought up or simple preference, it has nothing to do with intelligence.

I tend to agree that not using curse words is a matter of being polite as opposed to a lack of intelligence. However, there the problem of someone being too stupid to be polite and trust me I know too many

I think it does have to do with one's upbringing... my folks used to swear like it was a second language... and I have a bad potty mouth. It's calmed down since I've been out of production work. Frightening. She is certainly from the old school. Most "grandparents" were raised like that. They were raised in a very different era. It's not realistic today.

Let's face it, language is always evolving, with curse words or not, for better or for worse. Regardless, swearing can be very appropriate when all other words have exhausted themselves without getting through to the recipient.

actually, I think it is possible to insult someone quite effectively without cussing. take for instance the scene in Hook where Captain hook addresses his crew as "you sorry sacks of entrails" there was a bit more in the phrase, but I dont remember it entirely without breaking out the movie. another example is P.G. Wodehouse, who used to regularly have his characters say things along the lines of "BERTIE! you old Blot on the landscape! or you pimple on the arse of humanity! how about "pulchritudinous piece of poundage" ...... See what I mean? I think THAT is far more clever and requires more thought than a simple "mother****er" which in my opinion is so overdone as to have lost its insult cachet.

that was something my mother said to me when I was a teenager and I floated a few cuss words past her. I think she's right, I think that it requires more effort to come up with something equally (if not more) withering without relying on the lowest common denominator. Again, its what I believe. And, as I said, Im not 100% perfect, I do resort to the occasional curse/cuss word every now and then. sometimes the substitute is laffable (feces instead of ****) which I discovered earlier in this thread. It doesnt change my overall position because I never said a person has to ALWAYS avoid cuss words. I just personally believe it is more of a mental exercise to substitute something instead of a cuss word.

btw: Have you ever watched "The Commitments?" the entire movie is salted with so many four letter words that I was frankly amazed! even little children, priests, old folks, they ALL did it. Lets just say I wasnt expecting the foul language from everyone of all ages/callings....Of course, Americans are notoriously foul-mouthed, but the slang you get from Britain is of a different stripe, their most heinous swear words are strangely tame to MY ears (BLOODY? Really?...where at? That is funny because she used to be a high school English teacher! (But I did some editing to make that part fit the sig...so perhaps it was my doing...lol)

I always wondered what a dangling participle was....so, its just a sentence that is worded in such a way as to leave the reader hanging?

btw: I freely admit I am not expert at diagramming a sentence, but I have a natural sense of proper grammar and a basic understanding of its parts....this is just one of those grammar issues you hear about but have a hard time illustrating (at least I would)

YES YES YES! PERFECTION!
I think English Authors/Writers are expert at this sort of thing but thats just me. I dont think Americans have quite grasped the concept, and its a shame really because I find this sort of mental exercise quite entertaining :)
Alliteration is a hugely helpful tool in this sort of endeavor as is a wide ranging vocabulary for words that express excess or extremes....

Just because language is flowery doesn't mean there's more effort behind it than there is behind language that's simplistic or crude. Just ask Hemingway.

And no disrespect to the great and powerful Oz, but I think there's just a bit more thought invested in a line like, "I saw the best minds of my generation . . . who let themselves be f***ed in the ass by saintly motorcyclists, and screamed with joy . . .," than there is in, "You clinking, clanking, clattering, collection of coliginous junk!"

Slip Mahoney (Leo Gorcey, anyone besides me remember him? He was the inspiration for Norm Crosby's act) in the Bowery Boys used to always insult Satch (Huntz Hall) or various other characters with his mangling of the language....Hilarious!

Sort of. "Alone with a lifetime" is a participial phrase, as are phrases like, "at the top of the stairs," or "smelling the roses." They're all phrases which describe the action or situation of a particular noun (which I believe would be called an antecedent), and they need to be as close to that noun as possible in the sentece. If a participial phrase is somehow divorced from its antecedent, then it's left dangling out there in the middle of the sentence, making things ambiguous.

"John walked through the garden. Bending down to smell the roses, a bee stung him." Grammatically, that second sentence means that the bee was the one bending down to smell the roses.

Hehe...I wasn't to sure what it was either. But now that I know...I would have to say that it is a common mistake made by many writers.

Yeah, it's incredibly common. People do it all the time, because it's just such a subtle thing. I used one the other day in something important that I was writing and never noticed until someone else pointed it out me.

to each his own I guess.....simplistic and crude doesnt require any thought. its mental "fill in the blanks" in my opinion. if it speaks to you, great.

I do so love repeating: Depending on how it's used. Yes. It does.

Hemingway labored intensely over most of what he wrote, and his diction, which was occasionally crude and always simplistic, was always very deliberate and very thought-out.

Im not sure that I see why "smelling the roses" would be considered dangling. no one I know would have a sentence composed entirely of "smelling the roses" I think most people would say "I was.." or "he was.."
or she was..."

If a participial phrase is somehow divorced from its antecedent, then it's left dangling out there in the middle of the sentence, making things ambiguous.
what the heck is a participle anyway?

"John walked through the garden. Bending down to smell the roses, a bee stung him." Grammatically, that second sentence means that the bee was the one bending down to smell the roses.

wait, that doesnt make sense. someone is obviously bending down to smell the roses and got stung. Granted, it might have made more sense if it was worded "as he bent down to smell the roses, a bee stung him" but it doesnt strike me as too grievous an error

That's just a cultural difference which is silly to judge by because there are different meanings. I mean you guys have fanny packs for christ's sake which of course is a vagina pack, what a hideous name for something that needn't be. "Bloody" is a religious reference and therefore possibly more offensive than "****" to some yet it's so common and otherwise has become a regular term.

Bollocks means "rubbish" or basically "not true". If you don't agree with something you say it's bollocks.

a fanny pack is a "vagina pack?" fanny = vagina in your neck of the woods?
hoo boy! and if you'll re-read, I did infer that our respective versions of slang were independent. Words the British find offensive are innocuous to Americans and vice versa...
btw: nice of you to join in....in a weird sort of masochistic way, I've missed you.

Im not sure that I see why "smelling the roses" would be considered dangling.

It's not, unless it's in a sentence where it's separated from it's antecedent. Otherwise it's simply a participial phrase.

"John walked through the garden. Bending down to smell the roses, a bee stung him." Grammatically, that second sentence means that the bee was the one bending down to smell the roses.

=irishgrl]wait, that doesnt make sense. someone is obviously bending down to smell the roses and got stung.

Well right, clearly, what is meant is that John bent down and smelled the roses, but grammatically the sentence is still incorrect. One of the reasons dangling participles become such a common error is because we correct them for ourselves like that in our heads. It's obvious that the phrase "Bending down to smell the roses" is meant to apply to John, if that's made ambiguous by the sentence.

Granted, it might have made more sense if it was worded "as he bent down to smell the roses, a bee stung him" but it doesnt strike me as too grievous an error

A dangling particple usually doesn't make a sentence totally unreadable, no, but it does add an unnecessary level of ambiguity and can often be clumsy, so it really should be avoided in serious or professional writing.

IF he was trying to capture a particular "voice" (as was Shakespeare and Joyce)
then, no it didnt. it doesnt require any thought to mimic the language of the streets, its always going to be the basest form imaginable. As you go up the cultural ladder, IMO you will find a more diverse vocabulary. Again, this is what I believe. you may or may not agree, but it doesnt make me wrong or you right.

ok, I went back and grabbed your phrase:
"John walked through the garden. Bending down to smell the roses, a bee stung him." Grammatically, that second sentence means that the bee was the one bending down to smell the roses.
where exactly is the ambiguity? the "bee" is the last part of the sentence. the "actor" is indicated by the previous sentence and the action is inbetween. so, again: is this a good example?

IF he was trying to capture a particular "voice" (as was Shakespeare and Joyce)
then, no it didnt. it doesnt require any thought to mimic the language of the streets

So let me get this straight:

1) You think that all Shakespeare and Joyce were attempting to do when they used crude language in their work was to "mimic" street language.

2) You think that writing in simplistic or crude language requires no thought or effort.

I'm sorry, but yes, this is an issue of you being right or wrong, and you're wrong, on both counts. I don't know what Joyce or Hemingway you've read, but for you to claim that their use of simple and/or crude language didn't require any effort or thought is simply laughable. These are two men who spent years writing and editing what they wrote, and who put immense thought and effort into their choice of words, whether the word was "****breeches" or "contransmagnificandjewbangtantiality."
