So let me get this straight:

1) You think that all Shakespeare and Joyce were attempting to do when they used crude language in their work was to "mimic" street language.

um YEAH (DUH!!) They sure werent writing transcripts of their OWN conversations! If you cant see that, then you are just desperate

2) You think that writing in simplistic or crude language requires no thought or effort.
again, BINGO.

I'm sorry, but yes, this is an issue of you being right or wrong, and you're wrong, on both counts. I don't know what Joyce or Hemingway you've read, but for you to claim that their use of simple and/or crude language didn't require any effort or thought is simply laughable. These are two men who spent years writing and editing what they wrote, and who put immense thought and effort into their choice of words, whether the word was "****breeches" or "contransmagnificandjewbangtantiality."
so sorry.... you misunderstood, whether deliberately or not. Any author, anywhere that uses VERNACULAR doesnt have to imagine anything or create anything. All he/she has to do is sit at a window or at a cafe and take notes or bring along a recorder. How hard is that? Street language is certainly colorful, but its not cerebral by any stretch. If you choose to confuse the two, thats your perogative.

If you have a particular example to illustrate your point, then trot it out. and please be so kind as to include enuff text as to give an idea of the context of your example. Otherwise, I'll have to conclude that you just have a knee jerk reaction to anything I say rather than promoting a viable discourse.

in the end, all I am saying is that it IS possible to get your point across without cussing, and that I for one think it shows a heck of a lot more effort to do so. To bring in authors at all, actually, is muddying the waters a bit because I was referring to my own personal standard, not a literary convention. That is like comparing apples and oranges.

Not only did I hate the words "fanny pack", but I hated the fanny packs themselves. I guess I can understand why someone would like them, hands off and all that, but I still think they looked stupid. I rate them right along with visors.

so sorry.... you misunderstood, whether deliberately or not. Any author, anywhere that uses VERNACULAR doesnt have to imagine anything or create anything.

That's absolutely ridiculous. By that logic, nobody has to imagine anything or create anything to write. All the words exist already, you just have to write them down.

All he/she has to do is sit at a window or at a cafe and take notes or bring along a recorder.

Shakespeare/Hemingway/Joyce wrote fiction (or drama, in Bill's case). Whether they were using elevated language or more common terminology or slang or profanity, the actual sentences and paragraphs (or verses, in Bill's case) were entirely invented in their brains, and served more of a purpose in their writing than merely, "Well, I think I'll just imitate some street language here, I'll just copy down whatever I hear people saying." Nothing about The Pardoner's Tales is any less imaginative or creative than The Knight's Tale.

If you have a particular example to illustrate your point, then trot it out. and please be so kind as to include enuff text as to give an idea of the context of your example. Otherwise, I'll have to conclude that you just have a knee jerk reaction to anything I say rather than promoting a viable discourse.

Sorry, I don't have any English books with me, and I'm not going to try to sift through a bunch of massive e-texts in the middle of the night. (Actually, I went hunting for some Naked Lunch several posts ago, but it's a new enough book that I don't believe it's available as a free e-text.) But you go ahead and conclude whatever you want. Your logic does not resemble our earth logic, particularly when you redefine your terms in every post.

There's ALWAYS a time and place for cuss words. When I rolled over my SUV that I had all of six weeks last year, after I realized I was alive, nothing was missing, nothing was broke, and I wasn't bleeding profusely (just a few scrapes and a tiny cut from the glass), I could only think of one thing to say...

HOLY ****!!!

That's absolutely ridiculous. By that logic, nobody has to imagine anything or create anything to write. All the words exist already, you just have to write them down.um....at the risk of being repetitive:
BINGO. the only thing an author brings to a story is the plot. the words are just colors for the canvas. Geez. the only other consideration would be the "voice" (first person, third person etc) and environment of/for the characters. All of which the author has control over. This isnt rocket science btw..........

Again: arent you confusing PLOT with language? And you and I both know the Knight's Tale is nothing more than a reworked version of the Pardoner's Tales. It doesnt create any NEW language, all it does is mimic street talk, whether that talk come from medieval times or more recent. (actually, in the case of the Knight's Tale, I think the only "recent" contribution is the soundtrack)

Sorry, I don't have any English books with me, and I'm not going to try to sift through a bunch of massive e-texts in the middle of the night. This isnt a logic problem and Im not redefining anything
If you're going to throw out Joyce or Shakespeare as examples, then isnt it good sense to have material to back your play? Puh LEEZ: if its a problem of research, then give me an approximation
the point is, shouldnt you have an example we can all look at? :distress:

Holy ****! How did you manage to do that?
I realized quickly what was happening and leaned sideways to get as far away from the roof of the vehicle as possible. I also braced myself, so that my neck wouldn't snap. It's weird, but it was like this primitive survival instinct kicked in. The only thought that was going through my mind was "oh no...I'm sorry mom."

When it was over, the first thing I thought was "HOLY ****! I'm alive!" Then I did the hand test, the foot test, and the neck test. All was fine. Then I rolled down the window and gave a thumbs up for the benefit of those. While I realized how serious the accident was right away, it really hit me how lucky I was to be alive when I saw the back CD insert of one of the CDs I had in the car (Keb' Mo's "Peace... Back By Popular Demand") on the road, with the jewel case still in tact!

Needless to say, the CR-V (Can't Remain Vertical) was the last SUV for me. I replaced that SUV with a Toyota Matrix. It was brand new, yet the payments are actually $15 or so less a month than the 2001 SUV. And the money I save on gas is great, too.

"Dead Horse"

"Sick of this life
Not that you'd care
I'm not the only one with
whom these feelings I share

Nobody understands,
quite why we're here
We're searchin' for answers
That never appear

But maybe if I looked real hard I'd
I'd see your tryin' too
To understand this life,
That we're all goin' through
(Then when she said she was gonna like wreck my car...I didn't know what to
do)

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
An I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
I guess some things never change
Never change

I met an old cowboy
I saw the look in his eyes
Somethin' tells me he's been here before
'Cause experience makes you wise
I was only a small child
When the thought first came to me
That I'm a son of a gun and the gun of a son
That brought back the devil in me

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
An I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
I guess some things never change
Never change

I ain't quite what you'd call an old soul
Still wet behind the ears
I been around this track a couple o' times
But now the dust is startin' to clear
Oh yeah!!!

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
An I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
Ooh yeah, I'd be smilin'
No way I'd be smilin'
Ooh smilin'"

You weren't banned for what you said, nothing like that, but Carne was. A much appreciated ledgemember, thrown of the board. I thought that was way out of proportion compared to what he'd been doing and it really really pissed me off.

I do think the ladies who moderate chitchat here are willing to listen to a good point. (And, hey, they're new to the job, give them some time to learn. )
The great council of mods in the Carne-case however.. not. That situation felt so unfair to me. He got his third strike then. But how did he get his other two strikes? Everyone is so happy and relieved that Arizonaranger is gone now, but at the time, I heard very little support when I got my two strikes for my part in getting him outed for the d*ckhead he is, or any of the others who did. Unfairness followed by unfairness.
And when someone who is a friend, gets treated really unfairly, I get pretty aggressive myself, whether that might be rational in that situation or not. That's just something in my character, I guess.I'm not really sure why I'm bothering to discuss this or explain this again. Blame boredom.

So here goes.

In regards to the ArizonaRanger situation and the strikes that others (including yourself) received... as I tried to explain to you at the time, one cannot protest the presence of someone whom they feel is violating the rules here, by violating the rules themselves. Not only does that fall under the old "two wrongs don't make a right" category, but it also creates a double-standard. An "unfairness," as you said.

We were very aware of what AR was up to, and he wasn't "getting away with" anything. His days were numbered by the very nature of the things he posted. And as many times as I tried to tell people to keep their own noses clean and let him hang himself, many still refused. Thereby putting the mods in the position of having to penalize not only AR, but also the people who I can only assume thought they were "helping." Which was something we weren't happy that we had to do, but something that we had to do if things were to remain fair around here. Otherwise, we would have been taking sides, rather than enforcing the rules.

In regards to CarneVaca... I know he made public the fact that he had two strikes, but I can't remember if he ever made public why he received them. He received his first two strikes by hounding and perpetuating a feud with a girl who received her own strikes and was then banned.
They both received strikes because they both engaged in the same behaviour. Anything else would have been unfair.

CarneVaca then earned his third strike because he was starting arguments with other Ledgies under the "CarneVaca" name, and then tag-teaming and fueling the feuds with them by switching back and forth between his two additional IDs.
He also used all three of his IDs to brow-beat and belittle a teenager for the way he was running a game.

So while he had a lot to add to these boards, we couldn't simply allow him to get away with the same type of rule violations that had earned other Ledgies strikes and bannings.
Again, this would have been unfair. So being that he already had two strikes, his third strike resulted in the mandatory banning from the Ledge.

I understand being upset at the "loss" of a friend (though it's not like he was banned from the internet), but I don't understand the notion that any of it was handled "unfairly."
The moderators gave the situation the utmost attention and concern, and we agonized over our decision... ultimately realizing and deciding that if we didn't enforce the guidelines in CarneVaca's case in the same manner as we had in all prior incidents, then we would have been playing favorites and it wouldn't have been fair to everyone else.

It's regrettable that it had to come to that, but fair is fair.

I never expected people to keep silent and not complain to us (the mods) about his actions. People SHOULD speak up in these situations, after all. I welcomed the emails and PMs and tried to respond to each and every one of them.

But I did hope Ledgies wouldn't break the rules themselves in their quest to get rid of him. The resulting violations just made the moderators' jobs that much more difficult. And I tried to explain that to several people: "don't get yourself in trouble over him -- he's not worth it."
Like I said, he was already hanging himself and his days were numbered. So nothing good came from the feud, and the only result was that well-intentioned people regrettably received strikes because they, too, went against the guidelines and rules.

Lets's see his days were numbered to roughly two years worth of offensive homophobic and misogynistic posts and vile PMS .Others trolls who appear here with his attitude seem to self destruct within a few threads or less.Maybe it's because something was learned from AR. But given the duration of his presence here and what we knew about his activities on other sites I think the actions of his most vocal detractors were for the most part not inappropriate considering the source .

We'll never agree on these two cases, Brian. No, I doubt we ever will. But I know that in both cases, the moderators did the absolute best they could to fairly and even-handedly enforce the guidelines.

It surprises me that you're telling it like AR's days were numbered, you were on to him, etc.. because it did not look like that at all, in my memory. That's just easy to say now, in hindsight.I'm not rewriting history, just telling more than I could at the time.
Some of us mods didn't know everything that was going on with him on other boards, but we were certainly aware of what he was saying and doing here. I'm sorry if it didn't look like we were doing anything about it, but it's not exactly something that we broadcast. You know we've always tried to handle warnings and strikes as privately as possible, and the only time we've ever discussed them is if the Ledgie in question made it public knowledge. So I tried to assure people that the situation was being handled without saying too much. Many trusted my word, but some didn't... and I'm not sure what I could have done differently.

Others trolls who appear here with his attitude seem to self destruct within a few threads or less.Maybe it's because something was learned from AR. Well, you're right about that... we've adopted a "no trolls" policy. Whereas everyone used to get the benefit of the doubt with the "three-strikes & you're out" policy, obvious trolls are now sent packing.

(And for the record... we've always maintained that what goes on on other message boards doesn't pertain to the Ledge. We can only moderate what people do here.)

At any rate, I've really said all I have to say on this subject. Anything else and I'd just be repeating myself... and I've been trying my best lately to break that habit.

I agree it's nicer to avoid swear words, I just don't agree it's a sign of superior intellect.

That's just a movie. Ireland isn't really like that. I was born in Ireland, most of my relations live there and my best friend lives in Dublin, so I'm often over there. I've never personally heard a priest swear.
As for Britain, I can't even remember the last time I heard someone say "bloody". The same swear words are the standard ones here (in England) I'm afraid. Also, I'm not sure bugger is classified as a swear word. You can say that on prime time TV here, but you certainly couldn't say "****er".
it may or may not denote superior intellect, (I'll give you that) but when someone takes the time to come up with a substitute, to ME that shows they are using their BRAIN rather than resorting to gutter talk which IMO is mental "fill in the blanks" as I said.

As for the movie, in the documentary, both the director and the author and various of the actors mentioned the inordinate amount of profanity spoken in Ireland. since they all live there, I assumed they knew what they were talking about. If your experience is different, so be it.

as for the prime time TV standards in your country as opposed to mine, there is a LOT that is acceptable on the BBC that we dont show here. at least not on the main networks. if you pay for cable, you get all sorts of stuff in the language/nudity department....

I was watching a Will and Grace rerun the other day and, at Stan's funeral, Minnie Driver's character said something along the lines of, "So and so tried to bugger me in the rectory."

Having lived in Ireland and Britain, I can tell you swearing is just as rife in both countries.
But of course take the word of a comical DVD extra over mine if you wish.

All I meant to say is that bugger isn't considered an offensive word here. Old grannies will say: "Oh bugger, I left the iron on" etc, etc. So you're right it is mild, but my point was that the real swear words in Britain are not less mild than in the States, they are exactly the same ones. I shalln't name them since you'll think me unintelligent.
Just so you know, we have way more channels than the BBC these days and most don't allow swearing.

Im not taking the DVD's word over yours, merely explaining where I got my info. its not the only time I've heard that claim, but again as I said, Im not disputing your statement either.
I appreciate your taking the time to give me your views and information.

All I meant to say is that bugger isn't considered an offensive word here. Old grannies will say: "Oh bugger, I left the iron on" etc, etc.Now "bugger" in the U.S. used to refer to anal penetration between two men. Apparently, the word has drifted, like Karen Stone (who probably could have stood some anal penetration herself).

That's just a cultural difference which is silly to judge by because there are different meanings. I mean you guys have fanny packs for christ's sake which of course is a vagina pack, what a hideous name for something that needn't be. "Bloody" is a religious reference and therefore possibly more offensive than "f*ck" to some yet it's so common and otherwise has become a regular term.

Bollocks means "rubbish" or basically "not true". If you don't agree with something you say it's bollocks.

Howsabout mons pubis pack? Crotch pack?

So bullocks is kind of like saying bull****?

Whatever, it doesn't matter, you're all a bunch of tossers.

"tossers" there's a word that I never knew the exact meaning of...its obviously not good but can anyone clarify? and how did it evolve? if anyone knows..

Bollocks actually, bullocks are bulls that have had their nads lopped off, but yes "bollocks" can be used in that way. For example, if someone said that the President is doing a great job, you would say "that's a load of bollocks". You could also let it out as a general exclamation when something goes wrong, like "****!". It can be used liberally I guess, there would be other situations.

As for "tosser", that's just someone you don't like. An insult somewhere between "loser" and "wanker" I guess, eg. "you Americans are a bunch of tossers".

Another cultural difference is the word "root". Over here that means to have sex although you probably wouldn't tell your girlfriends that you and your partner had a root last night. It's a similar to "hump" I guess, dogs root and some girls are lucky enough to get guys who might say they scored a root. Basically "rooting" is mating.

"tosser", "tosspot" .......the same? and I wish the definition wasnt quite so nebulous, but thank you Lux for responding.. as for "root" that is funny!
I always thought "root" meant "to dig" like "rooting around in the garbage"
its always an eye opener to compare cultural differences...

No, I doubt we ever will. But I know that in both cases, the moderators did the absolute best they could to fairly and even-handedly enforce the guidelines.

I'm not rewriting history, just telling more than I could at the time.

Sorry, ledgies, it's a dead horse, but I can't let this one pass. Just ignore it if you don't want to see it.

Brian, that is plain BS. I don't believe that. Maybe it's been a few years now and the threads are already gone, but I remember very well this never would have gotten as far as it did if the problem wasn't so obviously ignored by the moderators at the time. Not just ignored, ridiculed. For TWO years.

That's funny, most big fm boards (Legacy, FM-Uk..) have had no problem throwing AR off immediately (or the couple of other well known trolls we have in our fancommunity). A troll is a troll is a troll.

Arizona is worse than the average troll in my somewhat educated opinion he is a psycho-path.He should have been gone after the first 2 or 3 anti -gay posts. Not after 2 years and countless ones.Stirke system or no strike system.

My view is that to post on a message board is to explicitly solicit the attention of others, & that once you have done so, you are morally obligated to say something of enough real or imagined interest to those whose attention you solicited.

so while the IP would have changed, the determination is made based on the type of negative interactions the person would have only if they began that type of behavior again?
