View Full Version : What Couplet Encompasses Your Philosophy?

Which couplet from a song encompasses everything you could say in a nutshell about life?

Mine is from "Under Pressure":

It's the terror of knowing what this world is about
Watching some good friends scream, "Let me out!"

I have two (oddly, the popular versions of both songs feature harmony vocals from David Crosby, who's not necessarily a favorite):

To everything...there is a season -Turn! Turn! Turn!

Fear is the lock and laughter the key to your heart -Suite: Judy Blue Eyes

From "Youth Nabbed As Sniper":

Fear causes some to live
Others die real cool

Couplets usually rhyme, honey. :p

I don't really have any. I'm more of a quatrain kinda guy.

Rhyming is so overrated...

But, if you're going to be a dick about it...(j/K)

On and on it will always be the rhythm, rhyme, and harmony

If you're not a South Park fan, it's still worth it for the slamming they give to those crraaazzy mo-fos.

Here's the schedule

Even if you can't handle their base humor, it's nice just to see the brutally frank commentary on those idiot scientologists.

I am always a dick. A couplet is usually two successive lines, not one. :p

Is it the episode called "Trapped In the Closet"? I'm always up for Scientology bashing. Those crazy crackers.

Im not sure this encompasses my philosophy, but I think it a very clever lyric:
You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charybdis

and this for a finish, sublime!
I will turn your face to alabaster
Then you'll find your servant is your master

I think that's the right one

It ends with

"For I have sworn thee fair and thought thee bright
Who art as black as hell and dark as night"

That has applied to my relationships far, far too many times.

I go to Stevie and FM concerts alone all the time.

And my best friend is moving away in 2 weeks.

And Hillary's couplet? Yeah, that would work pretty fine for my relationship history.

 Good one. That reminds me of the movie Beautiful Girls where at the high school reunion a guy tells Lauren Holly's character how she was really something else in high school - beautiful. "But you were as mean as a snake." I knew plenty of girls like that. And boys.

How about the Sounds of Silence? its chockFULL of couplets:
Hello Darkness My Old Friend
Ive come to talk with you again
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"

I know, I had to go and listen to them just after seeing the couplet. Just those two lines and immediately the guitar at the beginning of the song went through my head, along with all of the memories from the time in my life when I listened to the Smiths incessantly.

Great choice of philosophy-embodying couplet!

From Dar William's "Iowa"

Way back where I come from we never mean to bother
We never make our passions other people's concerns
And we walk in a world of safe people and at night
we go into our houses, and burn....

Here are a few from one of my favorite Dylan tunes, Chimes Of Freedom:

Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight

Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale

Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse

I watched you die, I heard you cry everynight in your sleep
I was so young you should have known better than to lean on me

That was my life up until about 3 months ago.

I'm happy for you that it is no longer. I can symapthize. That entire song IS my life. I actually got choked up the first time I heard it.

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I think I just veered WAY off topic. Sorry.
