I've been at this board for almost four years now and this is the first time I've added someone to my ignore list. Weird, considering that I should have added 1/2 Insane while he was still here. I felt like putting the Brown Eye on ignore more than a few times, but if I would have put him on ignore (ironically) I would have felt like I was missing out on something.

Do any of you out there have people on your ignore list? Why did you do it? Does anyone have me on their ignore list????  ;)

Yeah, but you can't read their posts in a thread either.

I don't have anyone on ignore. Sometimes people don't answer me, so I have no idea if they've actually used the "ignore" feature on me, or if they are just actually ignoring me. Ignore is a funny word if you keep saying it......

Do any of you out there have people on your ignore list? Why did you do it?

I have considered it, and I've actually done it, but never for more than an hour at a time. I don't really like the way the ignore feature works on this board, because all it does is block the content of the posts, not the posts themselves. You can still see that a person posted something.

Anyway, if I really want to ignore someone, I usually have enough willpower simply to ignore them without feeling the need to actually block their posts.

I'm guessing I'm probably on a few people's lists.

Now I'm wondering who these eight people are who have offended you so! Any clues?Naturally, Hayley is there ... & you, of course, & Jyqm & Mikki & Amber & Mary Anne & Romy & Nancy & sparky & Tower & distention & raggybone & SugarSue & so on & so forth. The kids on my ignore list are there essentially because what they have to say I consistently don't find amusing or insightful or worth my reading -- it's as much a comment about me as about them. I give a person about a month to amuse me or teach me or interest me on these message boards; after that, if I have no interest, I have no interest. I just tune out. The other reason I might ignore someone is if he has an annoying banner, sig or avatar -- or if his writing is "message board prose poetry," something so illiterate that I can't make sense of it & don't want to spend much time interpreting stuff with little or no payback. Again, not a personal grudge I have against someone ... just an unwillingness to look at something again & again. Which reminds me ... I need to change my banner.

It's been years since someone genuinely got my goat (uh-oh, I'm leaving myself wide open for a Stevie joke!)... since I learned how fun it can be to see how long you can get someone to keep debating you.

I don't have people on ignore b/c I argue with them, I have them on b/c they are irritating.Exactly. That's the difference. The souls on my ignore list just have nothing to say that interests me -- in that sense, it's an annoyance to have to see their posts given the fact that time is limited & I want enough time to read the other guys' stuff.

I don't just stick someone on my list who argues with me. Just the opposite: I want to keep hammering away at that person polemically so I want & need to see what that person says.

Hmmmm.... I keep telling myself that I'm not going to read anything into this, but what the hell.

The notion that Brown Eye is somehow "popular" around here because he came out of the closet could be perceived as slightly insulting. Just because one is gay does not automatically whisk them in some club where they get some kind of free pass.

The thing that is most interesting to me about homosexuality is its diversity. Gays are everywhere- we exist in almost every demographic throughout the world. Homosexuality is part of humanity. With that said, gays do not have any kind of universal acceptance any more than straights do. Brandon's Coulterworship/baby-killer rhetoric is offensive regardless of his orientation. Actions always speak louder than words and if Brandon claims to be depoliticized and less inflammatory than his past then I will wait and see how it pans out. Whether or not he's a fag is immaterial.

I'm pretty sure that we're on the same page here, however, your post was a little too "Velvet Mafia" for me.

Absolutely. It's stopped being about how the government can best serve the people who hold the power to run it, and essentially own it, into choosing a side via a political party and duking it out with the opposite side. Pretty pointless.

In this monster thread, started by Bobo on October 29th: http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=23570

I really don't think Brown Eyes' "acceptance" has anything to do with his being gay. It's got much more to do with the fact that he decided to start questioning his political behavior in addition to his sexual behavior, and stopped shouting his Coulterisms every day in favor of actually posting about Fleetwood Mac.

Jyqm

Regardless of this guy, it's not specific to him. This place basically exists for and because of the gay male sexual banter. I'm not commenting either way on it but it's pretty obvious how dominant and popular that kind of chat is. It's the one safe topic that will always get you a thriving conversation.

As a straight male, I gotta say, I really don't notice all that much of it. It shows up in a few threads here and there, but I don't think it's incredibly "dominant."

Does his newly acknowledged orientation give him more to talk about with the many gay guys here ? Yup. I don't know that sexual banter equals popularity - whatever constitutes popularity on a message board I can't really define. I can say for myself that I do not automatically like people because they are gay. It may provide a small amount of common ground when discussing some issues, but I don't like gay people more than straight people. Sparky was expressing his personal experiences and perceptions, which he explained well. I was making a generalized statement, which has already been expounded upon by others, that was not necessarily applicable to everyone. I believe my generalization to hold true for the most part, although I wasn't attempting to make any kind of deep social commentary with it.

I think the responses to my remark show that some people take themselves way too seriously. I can't judge, however, because I am guilty of that myself sometimes. I think you are right about this, Moonamatic.
There was general vibe of "oh, poor struggling young homo, take it easy on him" going around. Amidst that touchy feely coddlethon, there were a few voices of reason.

With that said...

I would like to note that that has nothing to do with me or my decision to "out" myself. I didn't do it so I would become "popular" around here...GOD LORD I don't want to become popular around here! I just look at all those who are very well liked and realize I can't stand most of them...

What??? I think most of the guys (and a few gals) here have HUGE egos, including you.

I certainly never claimed anything to the contrary there. I simply take exception to Brown Eyes' contention that I have a compulsion to post a smart ass comment in response to everything he says. I don't think I respond to very many of his posts, and clearly I have a smart ass response to just about everybody.

Sparky was expressing his personal experiences and perceptions, which he explained well. I was making a generalized statement, which has already been expounded upon by others, that was not necessarily applicable to everyone. I believe my generalization to hold true for the most part, although I wasn't attempting to make any kind of deep social commentary with it.Maybe it is true. There was an outpouring of sympathy and many could commiserate with his situation, and that is understandable though it was about as sudden as his 180. If we didn't think so already, that's evident in the comments from some Ledgies saying, "What happened? I missed that." It was just that quick. What we seen play out in such a short timespan is not uncommon but befudding as hell just the same, IMO. I think because of that it may be too early to make a judgment call. Whatever the case, I believe you didn't mean to make some "deep social commentary," as you said.

I think the responses to my remark show that some people take themselves way too seriously. I can't judge, however, because I am guilty of that myself sometimes. In spite of that, I will go ahead and say we all should lighten up. Not to the degree of Care Bears, but to the degree that we are able to laugh at ourselves.I think very few people don't take themselves too seriously from time to time. JMO. But I'm inclined to add that this country's absolutely insane level of homophobia is enough to make someone not want to get out of bed in the morning, so I often point to that as a reason for reactions to certain comments here and there.

As for Jyqm's Care Bears comment, I just can't help that I found that so damn funny.

Wow! I missed a whole lot this afternoon, while I was ignoring this thread!

It strikes me as a little true that there are popular people on this forum, and all forums, but what is different here is that joining the forum is elective, and high school was mandatory. So, in some ways people who are joining, or perhaps people who are staying in this forum, have already decided that they like the company at least a little. Of course, alliances form, and there is some hazing, I think, so that is similar to high shcool, and also similar to some jobs I have had.

I think is is fascinating to witness the social dynamics on a forum, and how people fall into roles: class clown, best-dressed, most congenial. I have a friend who studies at Berkeley, and she writes on social networks. I have always wished she would write on the social dynamics on forums. Here is a link to the academic writing she produced about the social dynamic on sites like Tribe.net, or LiveJournal.http://www.danah.org/papers/

oh yes, in high school, we signed our notes, LAKS (Love and Kinky Stuff) - so 80's!
