It doesn't much matter, because the point is the same. People bitching about the "popular" people, what supposedly makes them so, and other people screaming that their intentions regarding certain things weren't motivated by "popularity." It's silliness. This is a message board, for christ's sake.
And you're saying this with one of your favourite popular people in your sig writing on a message board dedicated to a popular band. I think it's instinctive for everyone to try to get out of anonimity even only to become a 1 second famous on a tiny web reflection of our microuniverse.

I ask, because in high school I was CONVINCED that they didn't come any straighter than the guys on the football team, but found out about three years ago, that a few of the football players in my class used to get their jollies with a guy who was a couple grades below us.
Apparently he was happily at their beck and call... and was called quite a lot!

Wow, that's pretty amazing really.
Were you out to him before the romantic/sexual side of the relationship began, or did that aspect of the relationship sort of just happen?
Hm. There was no real 'out' thing going on. I was out to a number of my friends, but I still had a girlfriend, mostly for show. So did he. A lot of it was non-verbal. One thing lead to another. And then it was just something that unfolded and took off. There was no talk about it. I was certain if we said anything that would have killed it.
The most I ever said to him about it was when I tossed him that little piece of the heart at the end of a particularly serious night. Then about 2 days before graduation, he walked up to me behind this one building where we always used to meet. I was sitting by myself looking at my own piece of the same heart, which I always had on. I had taken it off and was staring at it and was of course thinking about what the hell I was going to do in two days. I was kind of upset and mad at him - for what I don't know. Probably because I knew it was over. That part of our lives was simply going to be over and there was nothing anyone could do about it. He asked me what I was doing and I remember just shaking my head and refusing to say anything. He saw what I was doing. All I could do was to ask him if he still had it. He knew what I meant. He produced it in a flash and said he had been carrying it with him since the night I gave it to him. I can still see what it looked like and how it caught the light. I reached out and touched it and touched his hand, and I swear to God at that second someone walked around the building and yelled our names. I don't remember who it was. But I do remember feeling like I was caught. We both pulled back our hands and stepped away from each other and everything changed. What happened next ? I have no idea. Don't know. Can't recall. I just know something broke that second. And that I sat against the wall alone until it was very late and very dark and then I walked home by myself.
Damn. Hadn't thought of that in a long time. I forgot all about that day.
And I probably better stop thinking about it.

It is a great word. Shame you mis-spelled my other favorite word: succinct.
Oy. Between my missing the other C and using "they're" instead of "their" earlier, I must be losing it. I curse you for pointing that out.
Which by the way is used incorrectly. "to the point" basically means succinct. Why say it twice?
I wanted to hammer the point home.
Diss will now put me on ignore. I'm certain of it.
You can bet your ass. I have no use for the likes of you any longer. Take that missing C and shove it.

A lot of it was non-verbal. One thing lead to another. And then it was just something that unfolded and took off. There was no talk about it. I was certain if we said anything that would have killed it.That definitely makes a lot of sense. Sometimes, at that age especially, talking about it, ruins it. You just have to go with it and try not to put too many demands or expectations on it.

That's nothing to beat yourself up over. For you, it took 20 years to realize who you were....nothing shameful about that...some still don't know who they are....and end up in a lifestyle that's not their own and live a lie for their entire existance on earth....that's something to be ashamed about.
When I was reading your story, I thought you made it up. It sounded all TV movie like, the way you described it. At first I laughed and thought you were clever, then I realized that of course you weren't making it up. Then I wondered if you saw it all in soft focus and golden light as you were thinking back...I totally imagined you sitting dejectedly against the wall...some poignant song went through my mind right then, I can't remember which...
Anyway, perhaps you should write a script.
I agree. The imagery of that moment... it is poingnant and fascinating. I don't know anything about what its like to be gay in high school. The one person I know from my class who is gay did not come out for a long time. Even still he is flirty with women and seems to want to cover it up in mixed company. Anyway, Sparky's story is really moving. Ryan, are you an actor? I'm thinking you'll play Sparky. :D
I have a good friend who didn't come out until after being married to a woman for 5 years. I didn't meet him until a few years after that. I knew he was gay immediately so I don't know how he managed it! I am fascinated by the repressed thing. Do you really not know? Do you know and act like you don't?
I'm in tears. It must be the time of year or something. I was driving along in my car last night coming back from the post office and I thought of someone from long ago, another life and I just started crying.
It's a really beautiful, bittersweet story Sparks. Thank you for sharing it.

Oy, the MoDo interview was truly the greatest thing ever. They were talking about her new book, "Are Men Necessary?", and she was saying that there's nothing a man can do that a woman can't. Almost immediately, Anderson says to her "They can't have orgasms like men" and I almost choked on my own spit. I'll try to find the transcript, the whole thing was fantastic. And then when the interview was over, she says "Thank you, I'm a BIG fan" and slightly winked at him.

It's strange the things that can spark memories (no pun intended Sparky!). Scents (strangely enough) do that for me a lot. The other day I was throwing out old perfume bottles and the smell of one of them really took me back to 5 years ago when my sister and I were living together while we were both in college. She's since moved away and we are VERY close so I started to feel very reflective and melancholy remembering the old times we had. That was one of my favorite lives. Cripes, now I'm getting emotional. Blast!.

Well, I was going to go into a whole thing on this, but it ends up making me upset.
I wish that everyone could understand how difficult it is to grow up gay. There are so many things that are available to most of straight society that are denied to gays. Although, situations are starting to change, it's still sad.
Proms, courtship, puppy love, going on dates, sharing dinner time with one's family, having your boyfriend/girlfriend be an open part of one's family life- and on, and on, and on.... Missing out on all that kind of stuff when you're in your teens and early twenties leaves a void so that when you actually do start to "date" it's usually based on hooking up for sex and then doing the whole courtship thing- totally reversed.
I know that your story wasn't necessarily specific to what I'm saying, but I just thought I'd blab about it. I grew up the youngest of five siblings and my brothers and sister always had a girlfriend/boyfriend that was "part of the family". Hanging out and such. Completely missing out on that kind of life-sharing isolated me even further from my already distant relationship with my family members.
All that stuff is so sad and such a shame because it's all based on ignorance, fear and intolerance. All for nothing. So much loss. And like Hillary was saying, regret is a bitch. It's hard to get over, but my wish is that the teens of today and the future will not have to live that kind of life.

My best friend (since we were 8) is gay, and I watched him go thru all the things you mentioned, including breaking the heart of his lifelong girlfriend (also a best friend). He wanted so much to love her, and marry her, but it was not meant to be. I was supportive, and loved him, but he had to work it out on his on. I hate the fact that, so many years later, teens, and people of all ages still have such struggles, and become trapped in lies just because society doesn't understand. It boggles my mind! If they could see his life thru my eyes, they would have no questions.

I think about this all the time. I say things about it to people and many of them question my sanity, it seems. Gender has nothing on love. It's so insignificant in the face of it.
You have to get away from those people that can't accept it. At the very least shield your heart from them. They're not worth your misery.

For some reason, it's an embarassment to those who are not gay. Sometimes I think they are struggling with their own insecurities. It's not about me....it's about them.
The first thing my mom said to me when I came out (after the "You're going to get AIDS speech  ) was "You know you can never bring a guy home." At the time, I was ashamed of it, too. I was the outcast of the family. I was the one who never would have a big fancy wedding like all of my cousins.
After the initial shock of it all.....and for shows like "Will and Grace"...my parents eventually accepted it mainly because the insecurities went away. The unknown was finally known. They finally "understood" my lifestyle and knew it wasn't all sex and drugs. And they don't take every word of the bible so seriously.... If that were the case, we would all be snake charmers. :woohoo:

See, I can't deal with confrontation, which is the reason why I haven't told my family. The last time I was at my parents' house, I used my brother's laptop to access my livejournal, hoping that after I had left, curiosity would get the best of him...I'm not sure if my plan worked, but I haven't gotten a phone call from any of them since I got back home, over two months ago. I'm not sure what conclusions to draw there.
Anyway...if my mom ever said anything to me like what yours said to you (and I wouldn't put it past her...but she'd probably throw in a 'your going to hell' too), I swear I'd never speak to any of my relatives again. I don't really like them that much anyway.

For me it has a happy ending, though. All three of my brothers and my sister married and subsequently divorced. My partner Geoffrey and I have been together twelve years, which is longer than any of my sibling's marriages lasted. My mom and dad and my siblings always say they like Geoffrey a lot more than me (my family has a teasing-type sense of humor).
So, while childhood and adolescence can really suck for gays, adulthood can be quite rewarding in some cases. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, ya know....

It was terrible at the time. I knew my parents well, though. I was ready for the backlash and could take it. Deep down, they didn't feel that way....after all the anger and sadness came out....all became well. We became closer after that. I lived an embarassed life before that, but now I can go visit them and be me. Plus, I've been out to them for 6-7 years....the fog has lifted greatly.

My parents just wouldn't believe me when I told them. The initial reaction was so bad that I went back to trying to be straight for a few years. Sometimes I was really convinced that I was. When I knew there was no turning back, the whole thing was very traumatic for everyone involved, but things are so much better now and have been for the past couple of years. Still, there are some relatives who will never be okay with it and then there are others who don't know because I suspect they'll never be okay with it. Lately I've been thinking that if that's the way it works out, it would be best if they never knew, if they died thinking I'm straight. They drive me crazy with the whole "When is your wedding going to be, huh? Are you next?" and "When are you having a baby?"
Anyway...I'm sorry that no one else has had it easy. :( I'm glad that you all have found some peace of mind, whether your relatives came to terms with it or you distanced yourself from them for self-preservation.
A friend here had her parents pull her out of college when she came out to them. Like college made her gay and they could cure her or something. It must have been so awful. :distress:

The first thing my mom said to me when I came out (after the "You're going to get AIDS speech  ) was "You know you can never bring a guy home." At the time, I was ashamed of it, too. I was the outcast of the family. I was the one who never would have a big fancy wedding like all of my cousins. Our "coming out" experiences are actually quite similar it seems.
I had actually been wanting to tell my folks for quite a while, and then my mother started putting things together (all of my friends were gay, me and one guy in particular were spending a lot of time together, and every now and then I'd get little gifts and tokens of friendship from some of my gay friends), and so she just flat-out asked me.
And as much as I had been wanting to tell her, my gut instinct was still screaming, "LIE!!! Tell her you're straight!"... but I took a deep breath and told her that, yes, I am gay.
So, of course, I got the big speech... "you could catch something fatal"... "gay people get beaten up and killed"... etc., etc.
I was also told, "your father and I want you to be happy, but I hope you know you can never date anyone while we're alive," and to not ever do "anything that could embarrass our family."
I walked around for a while as if someone had punched me in the stomach. But it got easier, and my mother became more accepting of my homosexuality (which I owe a great deal of debt to my brother for, because he talked to her a lot about it and how "Brian is still Brian").
At any rate, it is a bitch for gays in their teens and early 20s. As Tower said, the things that straight people take for granted, are so often denied us.
I really, reall hope that future generations don't have it the same way we have at all. That's why these political battles are so important... we have to make things better for the next generations, and fight the good fight until we don't need to fight anymore.
That's also why I feel it's important that those of us in our 30s, 40s, 50s, and so on, keep pushing for things like the recognition of same-gender civil unions and/or marriage... even if it's something that we don't want for ourselves, we need to work to ensure that future generations have more choices and rights and freedoms than we did/do.

I agree with Amber, you should write a script Sparky. I felt truthful emotions through the story you shared and IMO that is a great basis.
