Oh My god, this cannot be true. Shame on that twit. I bet her management told her she could have a hit like Destinys Child. I mean , how big of a fan is this girl, is she a fan at all?? I never heard her say she liked Stevie in the least. I think I am going to be sick now. I realize Stevie will get her publishing royalties, but this I justcannot get over. Shocked  Maybe Jessica approves. This is her age group music?

"........and the days go by like a strand in the wind in the web that is STEVIE'S not YOURS!!!!!"
On positive side...if this allows some 15-16 year old girls who do not know who Stevie is get the chance to be exposed to her and really find a rock goddess to be a fan of then maybe alls well that ends well.

"........and the days go by like a strand in the wind in the web that is STEVIE'S not YOURS!!!!!"Exactly! What gall she has to cover something that like that. I would rant about it but you've explained it there.
On positive side...if this allows some 15-16 year old girls who do not know who Stevie is get the chance to be exposed to her and really find a rock goddess to be a fan of then maybe alls well that ends well.I think Stevie has enough fans, really. That doesn't mean it hurts to have more, but if this is how they are to be gotten then I am adamantly against it. If it were me (which it obviously isn't but I'll offer my opinion anyway), I would be happier to have a fewer fans by comparison and not have Hohan doing one of my signature songs that can be mine only. Hell, I'd rather fade into obscurity than have Hohan cover my songs.

If the song is released and becomes a hit chances are those 15-16 year old girls will never realize the song is a cover and think that it's a Lindsay Lohan original song, that's the scary part.

Well...I was working in the music dept at Hastings at the time..and I will never forget this guy who came in with his pre-teen daughter.. he made me prove to his kid that it was somebody else's song before Britney stole it.....It was preiceless...I popped open Joan Jett and the The Blackhearts and blared it throughout the store.....

Look, Peter, Paul and Mary weren't that bad, and besides, if they hadn't done "Blowin' in the Wind," Bobby might never have gotten popular in the first place.
Seriously, though, does anybody really care if Lohan covers "Edge" or not? No one will force you to listen to it, if a few fifteen year old girls like it and decide to check out Stevie's music, good for them, if the rest of them don't care or think it's a Lohan original, who cares?
I'm always amazed at the venom people direct at these Disney robots. They're so completely bland and harmless, how does anybody bother to get so worked up over anything they do?
At any rate, I don't think it's humanly possible for Ms. Lohan's cover of "Edge of Seventeen" to be as bad as Stevie's cover of "I Still Miss Someone."

I don't know about that? 15 and 16 year olds are smarter than that. They have such easy access to information these days with the internet that they tend to be very knowledgable about music. At least my 15 year son is. A couple of years ago when Eminem used Aerosmith's "Dream On" in one of his song's, my son said he really liked that song and I said, that's Areosmith's song, and he say's "Who?", to make a long story short, now he love's Areosmith. So hopefully the same will happen with "Edge".

From perezhilton.com:
Though we may trade in the commodity of gossip, our real passion is music. And, it's no big secret that one of our idols is Miss Stevie Nicks. We nearly creamed our pants when Lindz told us that she did a cover of Nicks' Edge Of Seventeen for her new album. Not only did Lindsay record the cover with a full orchestra, but she also had Stevie herself sing on the track. Fierceness!!!
Stevie sings on the track ? That lucky little bitch lol.

I'm sure there are many Disney robots but I don't really think she's one of them. I get the impression that she's kind of in a class of her own.
I don't find her harmless (haven't in awhile, really), especially if she's going to do that song. That cannot be anyone else's song. It's an insult to the writer for someone to try to make it hers. It would be like if she did Lennon's "God." I would bang my head against the wall if I heard someone like Hohan wailing "I don't believe in Beatles!" There are some things you don't touch. It just really pisses me off; I have a whole list of things that I overreact to, so it's just a personality flaw.

No one can truly rip off Stevie - her look, her mystique, her WORDS...most of these songs are TRL 'songs of the week,' that aren't memorable after they serve their "purpose" (hehe). I don't think that anyone can take Stevie's songs as their own, however they can breath new life into them (or screw them to no end, lol).

Oh please. People write a lot of ridiculous crap on this board, but this goes up there at the top.
Stevie apparently doesn't view this as an insult, considering she helped with the recording of the track. Actually, I think covering someone else's material is generally considered a sign of respect.
Is Lohan's cover going to be any good? Probably not. But all this goddess worship crap, "Nobody has any right to ever cover her songs because nobody else could ever be so ineffably wondrously mystically miraculously radiantly brilliant as Steeeeeeeeeviiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee!!!" is completely idiotic.

Why you'd have the Edge riff done with a banjo. Could yield interesting results.
Although I don't have the faintest idea who Lindsay Lohan is, I think it's great she decided to cover the song. Let's hope she can do it justice.
Although I don't have the faintest idea who Lindsay Lohan is, I think it's great she decided to cover the song. Let's hope she can do it justice.
She likely can't, but I'm interested to hear it anyway. Lindsay Lohan is a Disney creation: "cute" (but increasingly "sexy," as she gets older) freckled redhead who stars in largely family-friendly films (mostly remakes of The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday and Herbie the Love Bug and such), and naturally Disney has also secured a recording contract for her, because fifteen year old girls just eat that **** up, when their favorite Disney starlets not only act but also attempt to sing (see also, Hillary Duff and Raven Symone).

Nope, as I said, I don't think Edge should be covered. Not because of goddess worship, or whatever you've written above, but because the song is so intensely personal. I don't know why Stevie would want someone else to sing it.
I like Lindsey Lohan, though, she was great in Mean Girls.

I think many singer/songwriters have signature songs that no one else can touch. And that doesn't even necessarily mean they should be viewed as brilliant; it's just that their songs are especially personal.
Of course I can't help but agree that Stevie must not feel insulted because she approved of and apparently participated in it. But that's just one of a few things I know of that I don't particularly like about her. It sounds like a money thing to me and nothing else. I don't have any respect for that. But then my point of view has no bearing on anything, really, though that could be said for all of us on here.
You could tone it down just a tad. I didn't mean to actually have something of an argument over it. Besides, it's just not nice to put a girl down when she does it so often herself. I think I've got that covered. Ah, but then it is "just a message board."

To be honest, the main reason I don't care for covers of her songs is because half the charm of her songs is the fact that she's the one singing them. Stevie Nicks singing "Edge of Seventeen" is an awesome aural experience, whereas in the hands of someone else, it's going to sound silly because it essentially is silly. But you don't think so when she's singing "Sings a song, sounds like she's singing." Her crazy personality is what sells her songs. Take that away and you take most of the appeal away.

(I know we've had many threads about that, anyway). There are so many that look really absurd if you just write them down; her voice is what makes them into something else. I don't feel that way about all of her songs, but quite a few of them.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know the only annoying thing for me personally is not usually the cover itself..It's when the song, like Landslide, which was written by Stevie becomes known by a whole new generation as a Dixie Chicks song. It's when Stevie doesn't get the credit, is when I get annoyed. And that often happens when a new artist covers an old great song, the new kids listening think that it's their song..

One of the great things is that in the liner notes of cds, you have acknowledge the writers of the music, so to a fan that buys, if they are that interested in who wrote the track and want to dig deeper, they can see who wrote it and maybe discover the writer that way... Either way, it's cash in the bank for Stevie, which is a good thing along with maybe the younger gen. discovering her. I'm not so against covers... but if they are crap, I'd rather they stay buried!

You could tone it down just a tad. I didn't mean to actually have something of an argument over it. Besides, it's just not nice to put a girl down when she does it so often herself. I think I've got that covered. Ah, but then it is "just a message board."

Have you heard "I Live For the Day" yet? Her voice is pretty gravelly (for her, at least) on it, so I'm curious as to how Edge of Seventeen is going to sound.
She's harmless fluff. Much better than Hootchie Spears, Asslee Simpson, and Horsey Duff and those other idiots.

I haven't but I'll check it out. I really liked Rumors and Over and I like this new one. I lump her in with the others you mentioned as just carefree, cool music to listen to...tho I will say I love Ashlee Simpson's first cd. I think there are some great songs on there.
Nope, as I said, I don't think Edge should be covered. Not because of goddess worship, or whatever you've written above, but because the song is so intensely personal.
What is intensely personal about it, though? Aisde from the fact that Stevie claims one of the verses is about that one experience in the hospital, the lyrics are almost totally inscrutable.
I guess it's some honor bestowed upon me and I'd say it's quite a feat, especially considering many of the things Brandon has said in the past.
Well, Stevie-related crap.
If you think I'm one of those people who thinks Stevie truly is some goddess you really don't know me; the judgments are unwarranted, IMO.
Sorry, I didn't mean to direct that specifically at you. if you like to overreact to Lohan covering "Edge of Seventeen," I like to overreact to the hypocrisy of Stevie fans getting all upset and calling her a "talentless whore" and such. Then go and get upset because some critic says Stevie sounds like a goat. Glass houses, and that whole thing.
I think many singer/songwriters have signature songs that no one else can touch.
Okay. I completely disagree.
Of course I can't help but agree that Stevie must not feel insulted because she approved of and apparently participated in it. But that's just one of a few things I know of that I don't particularly like about her. It sounds like a money thing to me and nothing else.
I can't imagine it's just a money thing, because if she completely didn't care who used her songs how, she'd sell them all to commercials and such. She seems to just enjoy participating in stuff like this with other artists, whether they're crappy or not. (Despite her claims of owning 300,000 CDs, I think Stevie might be slightly out of touch with the top 40 music scene.)

I think every song could be covered, why not? Sometimes if a cover is good can also offer a new perspective. Now, giving Lohan's not too impressing actress skills, I doubt that would be the case, but if Stevie helped maybe it could hold some surprises, who knows.

Well, Stevie-related crap.Well, damn! I was so elated all day, thinking I had won the gold. I don't spend nearly as much time over here as between semesters and I was boasting to my mom about how someone claimed that I made the most idiotic statement on the whole board. I will admit, though, that many of those comments would naturally be concentrated in the Stevie forum, so there is some competition after all.

I have no qualms about bashing Hohan excessively, but then I show restraint with Stevie even when I disapprove of something because I really respect her/her talent. Aren't we all hypocrites in that area? We diss people we dislike, and when critics diss people we like, we're either offended or annoyed. Yeah, there are some crazy Stevie fans out there (some and not all--I must distinguish), but I think those reactions are not unique to Stevie fans at all.
Or, to simplify, I really think Hohan doesn't have musical talent and she does look like a whore, so isn't it just honesty? I honestly don't believe Stevie sounds like a goat.

(Despite her claims of owning 300,000 CDs, I think Stevie might be slightly out of touch with the top 40 music scene.)Good point. I think maybe it's a combination of wanting more money and thinking it's nice and flattering and such for a song to be covered regardless of who covers it. This is all my speculation, of course. I can't get over how if I were a famous rock star I would not want her covering any of my songs, but that's me and that's irrelevant, I know.
She probably hasnt listened to all 300,000
Maybe that's why she doesn't have time to record a new album.

It doesn't surprise me that there are so many haters in here dissing Lindsay Lohan because she is covering "Edge of Seventeen." People get so worked up over nothing. I don't know too much about Lindsay, but from the few times I've seen her on TV, she actually seems genuine and pretty cool. I'm also aware that she's had a turbulent relationship with her Father and she sings about it on her new single "Confessions Of A Broken Heart." I saw the video and I must say I was pretty impressed. This is not the stuff Britney and Hillary Duff are doing. I think there is more depth to Lindsay than we realize. The fact that she is even covering a Stevie song is positive thing. Give the girl a chance to grow people. I don't think she is even 20 yet is she? I think at least she is heading in the right direction.
And of all things, the movie she stars in "Mean Girls" came on Showtime tonight. I watched the first hour and I must say it was pretty funny. It received 3 stars out of 4. Lindsay is pretty cool. Stop spreading negative vibes.

Can't we just dislike someone? I've got plenty of reasons. Mean Girls was the last good thing she did, IMO. I've been watching her since she was a kid and she has become increasingly annoying. I'm having a hard time understanding why it's necessary for me to have your opinion and not my own.

I suppose, I guess I just never really understand the venom directed at these types of performers because to me they just seem so harmless and obviously bad, it's just not necessary. They're too easy a target, and it's not like anyone other than a few teenage girls takes them remotely seriously, and they're just kids anyway. There have always been, and probably will always be, silly pre-fab performers like this, so I just let them be and let their fifteen minutes run its course and save my smartass comments for crappy bands that some misguided people actually think are good.

I guess people just like what they like. Not much you can do about it. Personally I think she's OK. I don't care what anyone covers either. If I don't like it when it comes out, I don't have to listen to it. I think it's funny too because when Stevie started out (and to this day) she still gets her fair share of negative reviews and opinions. I have a ton of friends who think she's an awful singer, but it's just a matter of taste in things. I have enough things to worry about in my personal life than to stress over stuff like that.

I have to agree. I thought her cover of Stairway to Heaven was different and great and Plant obviously approved because he consulted on it. So, I often wonder what she would do with La Nicks' stuff, esp. considering in La Nicks' youth, she had a voice very similar to Dolly's voice.

I hear what you're saying, but I think that if such a song were done the right way, and not by some talentless hack, then it could be a great thing. I just don't think Lindsay Lohan is the best choice to cover this song. This song should be covered by a great vocalist to do it any justice. I like Lindsey Lohan, though, she was great in Mean Girls.
To be honest, the fact that it's Lohan covering it isn't really what bothers me. It could be anyone else, and I probably still wouldn't be enthusiastic about it. As much as a compliment as it may be to Stevie, I don't think her songs can really be covered --Not because of any sort of goddess worship  -- but because many of her songs are about her own experiences, past and present. Someone other than Nicks singing, "...with the words of a poet and a voice of a choir, and a melody" would sound out of character to me, especially coming out of the mouth of a nineteen year old girl. I know she's trying to COVER it, not make it her own, but it would still sound "off" to me. When I heard Jonas's version, I have to admit, it wasn't terrible (coming from someone who generally prefers female singing voices to male ones!), but the feeling and personal connection there was missing.
It's like Eva Cassidy's version of Songbird. It's nice; the woman clearly has a gorgeous voice, but there's a difference between Eva's version and the original. Or... say, Nicky Holland covering Cyndi Lauper's "Hat Full of Stars". it just doesn't sound right, since the song, although I'm sure many people could find a way to relate on some level, was about her dealing with her memories of her 1988 split with David Wolff. Cyn went through the emotions, whereas the person who covered it, presumably, is just going the motions.
Y'know what I'm saying?
To said... I have to admit, I am curious as to whether or not Lohan will include the "Edge yell" in her version or not. ;)
Cyn went through the emotions, whereas the person who covered it, presumably, is just going the motions.
If the person covering a song is presumably just going through the motions, they shouldn't really be covering the song in the first place. A person covering a song should presumably be bringing their own experience and their own talent and weight and perspective to that song.
One of the main purposes of art is that it's not totally solipsistic, and it doesn't mean just one thing. If it is, and it does, then it's just bad art. What's the point of a work of art if no one else can experience what's being expressed in it, or bring their own layers of meaning to it? If art can't achieve some level of universality in the way other people interact with it, then it's not being good art.
And there's nothing about the vast majority of Stevie's songs that's oh-so-intensely personal that nobody else could ever touch them. The fact that nobody really knows what most of them are actually about is testament enough to that.
You want to talk about an intensely personal song? Try "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. Now that's f***ing personal. And yet Johnny Cash covered it, and it was absolutely brilliant, and it brought scores of new meanings to the song. And that's the whole point: art isn't static, or it shouldn't be, anyway. And nor should it mean only one thing.
"Edge of Seventeen" might be partly based on Stevie's experiences with death in a hospital on the night of John Lennon's murder, but that's not what the song is about. What's it about is completely different for everyone who hears it, and everyone who potentially performs it. And that's the beauty of it. If anybody feels that one of Stevie's songs has moved them enough and has been meaningful for them enough that they want to perform it themselves and bring that new meaning out, then I'll gladly welcome a cover of anything in her catalogue.

But I don't think L-Ho shouldn't cover it. You know, in that way that she can do whatever she wants? I mean, I definitely have the preconception that it will suck, but I don't have to listen to it.
I will be mad, though, if everyone likes L-Ho's version of Edge, and it becomes a hit, while being vastly inferior to the original.
If this should happen, I want Stevie's Edge to be played every single time someone talks about L-Ho's Edge. Or nearly.

MmmHmmm, I probably wouldn't even know about it, if not for this thread. I had no idea the Mean Girls girl was trying to be a pop star, or anything else about her. Now that I have seen her (video link posted here) I think they did an ok job of coaching her voice, and recording her. The makeup people did a good job of airbrusing some oil and bronze on her also. So, she's all set, and she can tour with her dance troupe and wireless headset mic, and I won't pay attention to that either. But, maybe someone will pass on a link, and the song will be different in some creative way that honors the first but doesn't just ape it, and then I will check it out. If that happens, well, cool!

My understanding is that it is about her experience with death. I can't think of many things more personal than such an experience. If I wrote a song about my experience with my partner's death, I wouldn't be happy about someone else recording it.
It's just my opinion...some obviously find it ridiculous, but it's where I stand on a cover of Edge.
Edge is about death? You mean because she says she wrote it after Lennon was shot, quite similarly to the way she says she wrote SB after hearing LRC? The one part about "running up the stairs and down the hall" might be about Uncle John and his death, but that is it. IMHO.

Maybe she'll do an Edge walk too .

You want to talk about an intensely personal song? Try "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. Now that's f***ing personal. And yet Johnny Cash covered it, and it was absolutely brilliant, and it brought scores of new meanings to the song.
Excellent example, and I agree!

From what I remember, the song is about her feelings upon hearing the news of John Lennon's death while coping with the loss of her uncle. But, you know that could have changed by now. I don't think it's too personal to let anyone cover. I'm sure she's cool with it.

"'Edge of Seventeen' is a song that I began to write in, I guess, around January. And we started recording in February. I lost an uncle around the same time that John Lennon died. And my uncle's name was Johnathan, too. And my uncle got real sick around the beginning of December, of cancer, and we just sort of watched him go. And my aunt's house, when my uncle died, was like, very pale yellow... very ethereal. And there was just real quiet music playing. And, 'So I went today, maybe I will go again tomorrow. The music there, it was hauntingly familiar. And I see you doing what I tried to do for me, with the words of a poet, and the voice of a choir and a melody... and nothing else mattered.' And I just sat there and held his little hand, and he died. The end of the song, it says, 'I hear the call of a nightbird, singing come away...', and that's when I felt that the black bird was taking the white bird to where ever. And it was terribly sad. And I was like, holding his hand when he died. And I really felt the loss of these spirits. And that's the white winged dove, that's the spirit."
~Stevie Nicks, 1981
"The line 'And the days go by like a strand in the wind' that's how fast those days were going by during my uncle's illness, and it was so upsetting to me. The part that says 'I went today... maybe I will go again... tomorrow' refers to seeing him the day before he died. He was home and my aunt had some music softly playing, and it was a perfect place for the spirit to go away. The white-winged dove in the song is a spirit that is leaving a body, and I felt a great loss at how both Johns were taken. 'I hear the call of the nightbird singing... come away... come away...' "
~Stevie Nicks, Rolling Stone, September 1981
"The Edge of Seventeen is my favorite tune. It's the one that I really can't wait to do onstage. The place that it came from when it was written was sad because it came out of my frustration in not knowing exactly how to accept the death of John Lennon or the death of an uncle that I had that died in the same time period of cancer. And that's what the white winged dove is, the white winged dove is the spirit going, and the nightbird at the end is the one that is taking. It was a period of time that I just didn't know what to do so I just sat down and wrote about it. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I would write this song and I spent a little bit of time with my uncle as he was dying, and I knew a lot of people that knew John Lennon and I felt their pain for him... and my own pain of losing him, too. And the Edge of Seventeen just was born out of that. Recording it was the most exciting thing I've ever done, because everybody felt that there was an electrical charge going through this white winged dove all the way through that song."

The reason people get worked up about this is because these 15-minute folks get all the attention and payola'd on the radio while people with REAL talent get shoved to the back of the room. It's frustrating. The Hilary Duffs, Lindsey Lohans, etc. get the promotion that other bands/singers deserve. If people just shrug off crappy music, the big dogs are gonna think we LIKE it and want MORE of it.
"Get back *whip crack*, real talent, we have sh*tty music to promote!"
If people just shrug off crappy music, the big dogs are gonna think we LIKE it and want MORE of it.
No, if people shrug off crappy music, the big dogs will realize that people don't care for it, or don't care about it, and will move on to something else. It's the fact that people actually buy these people's records that keeps them going.
But haven't most discerning music fans just kind of accepted the fact that FM radio and mainstream corporate music just suck? There's so much great independent stuff going on out there, it just makes more sense to devote one's time and energy to seeking out the good music rather than railing against the bad music.
