I will make it through this...I know I will and come out a better person on the other side! That's absolutely right.

But let me impart one small piece of wisdom... never be afraid to admit to yourself or to others that an ideal or opinion that you've had was misguided, or was formed without enough life experience for it to be a truly well-rounded viewpoint.

It's easy to let the "straight viewpoint" that surrounds us, color our own views of what's supposedly right and wrong. And it's easy to get so hung up on "saving face," that we refuse to ever admit we were wrong.

Beyond that, just live a life that you can be proud of... always try to do right by others and yourself, and stay open to new ideas and viewpoints while remaining true to what feels right to you.

It's a rough road with no map to make it easier to navigate, but you'll be fine.

So, Mr. Brown Eyes, when exactly did you make the transformation? I could have sworn that you said you "disagree with the gay lifestyle" sometime within the last few weeks. Although I tried to search for the post and found nothing. The search feature here is usually useless anyway so I must go straight to the source. That's you. Hello.and basically, being tired of this whole arguing crap, I asked a professor today her opinion on all of this and she said:

"You know if animals have gotten in right all these years, why can't we? If a dog knows what to hump, why can't we? Id like to think we are smarter than a dog."

Now that you know you're gay, Brandon, I hope you can think on how much that hurt me (and angered me) when you said it. Certainly we are all better than the worst things we've said and done, but it's still something to think on, IMO.

First of all that was not a comment I made. That was a comment a professor of mine made...sorry that it offended you so much. :( :sorry:

That was a comment a professor of mine made...sorry that it offended you so much. :( :sorry:I know that it was a professor (I included that part so that I wouldn't be misrepresenting you) but you did agree at the time. That whole era, as you know, is full of extremely homophobic comments.

I know that you're sorry and I'm glad that you've come to see things differently, but it is a relatively quick and dramatic change, I think. Just an observation, not a condemnation.

I know you like your labels, Brown Eyes. I know you love to be able to call yourself a Republican and a Catholic, and I've no doubt you'll soon get really into being Gay with a capital G. You like to have an institution or community to align yourself with so that you're not just standing out there alone with your beliefs or your identity. That's fine.

But take a second not to be offended by every mildly smart-ass remark that has been made in this thread, and you'll see a number of people have already tried to explain to you why it seems so paradoxical to label yourself a Gay Republican. Because even in the past five years the Republican party has repeatedly tried to prevent gays from obtaining equal rights, in addition to trying to strip them of some rights they already have. As a party and an institution, one of their goals is to maginalize, stigamtize and to a large extent criminalize homosexuality. You've said elsewhere that that's just "one issue." But if you are homosexual, I'd say that's one pretty damn big issue.

So you're a fiscal conservative? Fine. You believe in limited government? Great. That doesn't mean you have to align yourself with a party that is trying to criminalize your sexual identity. There's no reason for you to be loyal to such an institution. You can agree with them on economic and governmental issues and still oppose them vehemently when it comes to their vilifying your lifestyle.

Just get rid of the label and disassociate yourself from an institution that hates you. That doesn't mean you have to change any other of your political beliefs. It just means that you're admitting to yourself that this is not a party which has all the right answers, and not a party with which you can completely align yourself in good conscience.

Nothing wrong with having "NPA" printed on your voter registration card. It just means that you think for yourself.

And yeah, it's going to be really hard in the voting booth. Because the next time you're voting somebody into office, you might have to decide which is more important to you at that moment - your economic and political preferences, or your basic rights as a human being who happens to be gay. That choice is up to you, but odds are, in this two-party system, you're not going to be able to have it both

You know you have no idea how right you probably are. I guess I have always felt the need to feel a part of some community and to label myself something. I suppose it sort of made me feel safe and protected. I guess I have just always clung to whatever came along (which I guess makes me somewhat pathetic)...I don't even really know who exactly I am anymore. I don't know what I stand for or why exactly this path has been chosen for me. But I suppose that mystery is a gift from God, I know that somewhere, somehow, and someday I will make be able to sort out all of this and find out WHO I AM and not just identify myself with whoever/whatever I associate myself with.

Perhaps I should just give up caring about politics all together and just concentrate on the one thing I know...love.

Eh..yea that was a bad time. Sorry I TRULY didn't mean to offend you or anyone else for that matter and it was just silly and stupid.

But how would your prefer me to come to grips with this...wait 5 years and then say, "oh yea I think I'm gay"? I mean this is something THAT I MYSELF am still getting used to. I am just now over the past couple of weeks admitting this to myself. I don't think this is something I can "ease" myself into. I finally have enough guts to say...you know what I AM GAY! I am a blunt person, so therefore I feel I must be totally honest with myself...now as far as telling family and friends...ehhh....now THAT will be a slow process. As of today you ledgies are the only people to know. I told Ken first and now I'm telling all of ya'll...

Perhaps I should just give up caring about politics all together and just concentrate on the one thing I know...love.You're Brandon... that's the only label you'll ever need.

We're human -- we have a lot of leeway for changing, growing, and for adopting beliefs and opinions and then abandoning or adapting them as we learn and experience new things.
And as you go through life, you'll realize that certain values and belief systems that used to seem irreconcilable, can co-exist.

For example, I believe in and have a deep faith in God, and I was raised Catholic, yet I think that Christianity is one of the worst things to ever happen to humanity.

So just embrace the fact that you're an individual, and don't try to conform yourself to fit other people's labels.

"It's better to be hated for who you are, than loved for who you're not."

As of today you ledgies are the only people to know. I told Ken first and now I'm telling all of ya'll...I can understand what you're saying there. I felt that way...I pretty much still feel that way. I wouldn't want you to wait five years, no. My time as a repressed homosexual was too long; I'm sure you feel the same way and would even more so if you made yourself wait. I also completely understand needing to be blunt and honest. In addition to all of that, I understand your need to be a part of something, as you said a few posts ago. Mari has said before that the labels are unnecessary but I feel that I need to be gay (or whatever the case may be) rather than just me. I have to be able to explain why I feel the way I feel; I need a name for it. I need to know that there are others out there who are comparable to me in that way so that I have people to talk to about it. I think this is human nature, and especially in the case of young people, and we are both young.

It's just hard for me to get past your comments from only a few months ago. I went through a change myself but it was not so dramatic. I never thought that it was wrong to be gay, I just didn't want someone to tell me I was, or I was likely to stop speaking to the person. I never told anyone that he or she was going against God or nature by being gay, despite the fact that the idea of being that myself scared the hell out of me. I'm very tempted to make a comment about organized religion here. I understand that you're not the only person who has been through that in just that way, though, so I suppose I am being unfair. But it's hard to say "all is forgiven" when comments like yours have been made.

It's very hard for me to have that stuff thrown on me. I always think I'm ready for it but then it comes and I realize I'm not. I'm getting better, but very slowly. Whenever Chris expresses his joy at his own homosexuality, I feel that I might cry. I don't think I can ever truly feel that way; I am far too tied to other people. I can't not think of the relatives of mine, for example who will NEVER accept that. Homosexuality can be joyful for me only under certain circumstances and there is no consistency with it. I am very angry much of the time. Though I can't relate directly, it is why I find myself identifying with Malcolm X so much. Some of your previous comments were added to the plethora of similar comments I hear regularly and sometimes it's just one more that is the straw that breaks the camel's back; the determinant that makes one either rest easily or cry herself to sleep. And there are people who are weaker than I am. That, to me, is a scary thought. There are people whose lives can be broken by a few strongly homophobic comments here and there.

But perhaps I am being very unfair to you because you have been trying to find yourself and what has happened is inevitable and maybe even beyond your control. But like you, I'm being honest and putting it out there. I know you have a lot of soul searching to do (as do I--it is probably nearly a lifelong process) and I really don't want to make it more difficult. Besides, maybe I am doing something thoroughly futile because what I'm talking about is water under the bridge, anyway.

I'm honored that I have made someone despise me so much that he completely ingores my direct questions. But I will try one more time for the sake of closure, even though I am starting to piece together answers for myself now. Mr. Brown Eyes, you came to this conclusion within the last few days? Were you still very much against the idea a few weeks ago, or was that my over active hallucinations acting up again?

I think if you concentrate on the recent posts between Hillary and me, your questions will be answered. :wavey:

Brandon - all past transgressions aside, I wish you only the best in finding out who you are and making the life YOU want. Your ideas and beliefs may change and that's part of life. Be proud of who you are. To me, being a kind, generous person to the best of your ability is all anyone can ask of you. No one is perfect...I think there are some great people here on the Ledge to talk to and befriend...and then there are asses that will be asses no matter what. I learn to steer away from them and let them say what they want and be as hateful as they want...you can always sign off and walk away from the computer...I've done that to several of your posts. Over on the Stevie Ledge there are people bickering back and forth over Stevie only doing this song or that song or not wearing this or that and yeah, I'd like to see the same thing they want to see...but I'm not hear to trash her or anyone in any way, or at least I try not to. I want to celebrate her music and appreciate what she has done and continues to do; bring great joy to my life no matter if she's in a damn garbage bag and farting and saying Rhiannon once (as a Ledgie said). And as Reba said (covering a great old song) "to thine own self, be true" and I think it's cheesy but very very applicable. Ehh, I guess that's all...

Homosexuality can be joyful for me only under certain circumstances and there is no consistency with it.Not everyone can or wants to walk away from their family and loved ones because of a difference of viewpoints regarding sexual orientation.

I come from a devoutly Catholic family, and I know the mindset... but that doesn't stop me from loving my family and wanting to be around them, while also loving myself and being proud of who I am.

But... it took a long time to come to that. It's one of those "previously irreconcilable" things that I mentioned to Brandon.

But... it took a long time to come to that. It's one of those "previously irreconcilable" things that I mentioned to Brandon.

I'm a big fat coward when it comes to that situation. GOD let me count the ways I love my family...but I would NEVER EVER come out to my parents except from a safe distance of 2000 miles across the country! I have specific family members that I know I could tell right this minute and they wouldn't love me any less...but others would be SHOCKED!

I meant in general when you tell anyone. Many people make the mistake of expecting approval or validation from other people. That is setting one's self up for a heartache as it may take some time. So, many suggest just telling people in terms of you do not want to exclude them from your life, but it is you, not their, life.

Trust me, I didn't think I'd EVER get to a place where I could say that I loved myself and that I was proud of who I am. My self-esteem was all but non-existant. And the slightest anti-gay comment from someone would crush me, and I'd be depressed about it for days or weeks. I very easily could have been another suicide statistic.

It's why I get so passionate about that kind of stuff now... I hate to see anyone else going through that God-awful self-doubt and utter self-hatred.

One more question, Mr. Brown Eyes. Did you come out in this thread? It's been difficult to keep up with it, and I still don't even know for sure the answers to my previous questions. If so, I feel a great sense of accomplishment that you had the courage to do what you did in my very own thread. Especially since you despise me so. Anyhoo, keep on truckin'. Why don't you just answer his question?
And I hope you are thanking your lucky stars right now that you met each and every one of these people who have been so kind to you in this thread. They're helping you. Just because you're gay, and a human. Despite the fact that you have previously been both a raging a-hole (haven't we all? well, okay, not all) and also that you support, or have supported, or whichever you decide, everything that goes against their basic rights as humans. Heck, I'm grateful to them for you.
Congrats. I wish you as smooth a road as possible. Oh, and about belonging to something? My motto is usually "do whatever I want". Hope that helps. Strand is right, you should actually try to cultivate the mindset that you do not need anyone else's approval. Everyone should, but especially since you are gay, and apparently everyone you know will be against that, I suggest you take that advice to heart and soul. It will lessen the possibility of you being in a world of hurt.

Please, dude, I mean pollyanna. *kiss*. People are just asking questions. Why should he be treated different than any other ledgie? And you know bitches would be doing the same thing if it was anyone else. Obviously not you, but you're not "bitchez". Plus, he was still an ass before. People just don't forget everything he ever said in one second because he's gay. Being gay doesn't wave a magical wand. And people have only been raking him over the coals for like, one or two days. Which I think is appropriate. He doesn't HAVE to answer, either, which it seems you are forgetting. :shrug:I certainly know gay guys who are total assholes... being gay doesn't absolve one of serious personality flaws.
But obviously coming out wasn't an easy thing for Brandon, and I just don't see why he has to be railroaded into explaining himself more than he already had.

And, no, he doesn't HAVE to answer any of these questions, but when you have someone (Hi Bobo :wavey: ) repeatedly asking, "why haven't you answered my question?," in the midst of other people also asking for explanations, a person is bound to feel cornered or put on the spot.

I'll hand it to Brandon though... he seems to be a pretty good sport.

Yeah, he is. Being a good sport.
Railroaded?!?! He's the one that's been talking about it for *at least* two days. I've barely read a post by him that doesn't talk about his crush on Ken, or some other gay thing. That being true, I hardly think he's being railroaded, or cornered. If he didn't want to talk about it, he shouldn't. And actually, Bobo's question was the most innocuous of all the posts. He basically asked "when did you out yourself as gay?" When. On the ledge. Hardly hostile, IMO.
If he's going to bring it up in the way, and quantity, that he has, he (and you) should not be suprised by all the Ledgies being their usual selves regarding this information.

But, you're right... I guess I shouldn't be surprised at all that some folks are "being their usual selves."
But, if you do talk about "something on your own" (here on the ledge) does that mean others are not supposed to respond? That's absurd. When you post/say something on a message board, the whole point is that people will respond to it. This board is not a vacuum. If he wanted to talk about it "on his own" he would use PM's. or the phone. or IM. Or something other than this massively public board, where everyone talks to each other and has opinions on everything. Although, I will say that people pressured him to answer "questions" but really, he had already answered those questions, the person just didn't see it, and didn't want to wade through the massive thread. It's nothing he hadn't said before.
And yes, of course we'll be our usual selves. Because we're individuals. And don't we deserve compassion, too? Don't we all deserve to just be able to be ourselves, without judgement?

Now I know the secret. Be a coming out young man.
That's like when I was trying to figure out how to be someone Stevie knew in a past life so I would be invited backstage. ei, it's never gonna happen.

But, if you do talk about "something on your own" (here on the ledge) does that mean others are not supposed to respond? That's absurd. When you post/say something on a message board, the whole point is that people will respond to it.Obviously.
But there's a difference between responding with support, and responding by asking for explanations and justifications (regarding his sexual orientation vs. his political beliefs).

I don't know... maybe I'm just feeling a little protective of him right now, knowing how painful the coming out process can be when you have religious and familial conflictions.

Not to seem rude at all, but it seems that it's only one point of view. He's pissed me off in the past, and has angered me with comments that he's made that are hurtful (at least to those who haven't developed a thick skin yet).

But, wow, what's he supposed to do in order to be forgiven? He's decided to be honest about his sexual orientation, he's apologized for things he's said that were hurtful, he's admitted that he's confused by the confliction between what he was raised to believe and what he feels in his heart... to me, he sounds like a guy who, while he's made mistakes in the past, is trying to fix that.

Again, if we don't offer someone a little compassion, then we're no better than the people who want to keep us down.

He hasn't rescinded his views, why would people not question him? Unless you are just talking about his gay views. He has rescinded those, but only like, 2 days ago. You have to give people time for discussion and closure. Like, for Hillary, and Towie, and whoever.
This all just happened days ago. And before, he insulted many. And besides that, he is still arguing for repub views. It's fine for people to discuss their differences, and I think that even the people who are taking issue with what he says (about gay things, not politically) have been astonishingly polite.
But he is still fair game, politically. Just because he is gay now, doesn't make him any more logical or educated.
If you read back, can you honestly say that people were taking him to task for his gayness, rather than his political beliefs coupled with his gayness? I think not. :wavey:
And I think folks ARE meeting him halfway. As in "it's great that you're gay, but what about this political belief?" Again, no one has reviled him because he said he was gay. It was those other things. In short, and in light of his past comments, I think the people have been MORE THAN meeting him halfway.

There was an interesting guy on Burnish.net, in his 40s I believe, gay, and a diehard Republican, and he and I debated on several occasions what I will always feel to be the illogical contradiction of being gay and Republican.

But the difference was that this gentleman was secure in his sexuality and had fully formed opinions based on decades of experience. Brandon's not in that position.

So, yeah, I think with Brandon's admission that he's gay and his statement that he's trying to reconcile what he was raised to believe, it's a little unfair to automatically start challenging him to explain and defend himself.

I think we should give the guy some room, without trying to make him take one side or the other right out of the gate.

That's a good point, Stew.
Conversely, though, I'm sure you are logical enough to understand that in the first few days, some people may have some issues to resolve with him. It's just human nature. This is the initial phase, i think many were curious. And some were just still challenging him on his political beliefs.(Diss, Towie, Miscellaneous). And also, many who were previously challenging him on his political beliefs were now being very supportive and kind to him (Strand, Hilly, Diss)
So, I guess my point is that what is happening now is perfectly understandable. I assume you acknowledge that he has not yet changed his political beliefs? And also that people in the thread have been very compassionate?

I just felt like maybe he should have some breathing room from having to reconcile his sexual orientation and his political beliefs not only in his own mind but to us as well.

Like I said, I was feeling protective of him, because of my own first-hand experiences (and those of more than one friend) with trying to make sense of the confliction between what some of us are raised to believe and what we feel in our hearts.

You are right about breathing room, but he seems not to want it so much just now. He seems to want to talk. And I think many people have been helping with that. But still. Perhaps that is a good point. I have never been gay.

Wild thread. The gay conservative republican thing has always bothered me too.I couldn't be in a relationship with one .but I have one as a friend which would have been unthinkable to me when I was younger and so very idealistic .I'm ashamed to admit when I was in my early 20s I even got into a couple bar room fights with gay repubs down in San Diego where I went to college ,arguing over politics. (Those few on here that have seen me in person can imagine who won) I'm not a left winger because I'm gay .It is just an entire set of ideas of how people should treat each other that causes me to believe this way so I can now find the space to allow others to have their beliefs as well just so long as I'm not sharing a bed with them.:)

*snip* In addition to all of that, I understand your need to be a part of something, as you said a few posts ago.

Hm, I dunno what exactly I said because I can be pretty vague sometimes ;)
Maybe it's more a 'bi' thing, I think. I guess bisexuality is a bit like atheism to me: you fall under the bisexual label because you're not straight or gay, because you don't fit under the usual labels. Just like atheism as a concept/label only exists because there is 'theism'.
Nobody would bother to call themselves atheist if religion didn't exist, you know? But it does, as does exist the norm of heterosexuality. Therefore you're forced to give yourself the label by the norms of society.
Uh, does that make sense?

I completely understand the desire to belong with a group, I know those feelings too, but it's a lot less important to me than it was 7 years ago when I first recognised/acknowledged my own bi feelings. Maybe because you grow more comfortable with who you are, then it becomes less important.sigh. I need a date.
Another difference is the attitude of some gay people towards bisexuals. I tried, but didn't always feel part of that community. I don't know that many bisexuals, so I guess I'm my own 'community' because of it.
I know the situation in this country is different, most people I know have some prejudices about homo/bisexuality but when they know you are, they're pretty relaxed about it.

err, end rant. take care, all.

You know you have no idea how right you probably are. I guess I have always felt the need to feel a part of some community and to label myself something. I suppose it sort of made me feel safe and protected. I guess I have just always clung to whatever came along (which I guess makes me somewhat pathetic)...

No, it doesn't make you pathetic. It just means that to a large extent you've just been a kid trying to figure out who you are and where you stand and what you believe in life. Everybody likes to feel that they're part of a community, and almost everybody at one time or another likes the simplicity of being able to just assign a label to oneself. Some people don't outgrow that until they're in their 40s or 50s. Some people never outgrow it. So be proud of yourself that you're becoming aware of it when you're so young and have so much time to figure out who you really are. (I'm not sure why I'm talking to you like I'm so much older than you.)

I don't even really know who exactly I am anymore. I don't know what I stand for or why exactly this path has been chosen for me. But I suppose that mystery is a gift from God, I know that somewhere, somehow, and someday I will make be able to sort out all of this and find out WHO I AM and not just identify myself with whoever/whatever I associate myself with.

Bingo! See, you've already got that much figured out, which means you're halfway there.

Perhaps I should just give up caring about politics all together and just concentrate on the one thing I know...love.

Well, no, you don't have to do that. I hope you do continue to care about politics. But I also hope you start to think for yourself and figure out what you truly believe about politics, instead of just toeing the Republican party line and parroting everything Ann Coulter says.

yeah.. made me think I must've done something wrong! I guess part of it was them feeling 'betrayed' somehow. I guess they couldn't/wouldn't understand what happens to you when you have a samesex crush for the first time. How confusing that is. A lot of people seem to think that if you're gay/bi, you know this from when you're born, when for a lot of people (that I know, anyway) it's a gradual discovery that can take a long time.
