I was always intrigued (please forgive the Gallicism) by Stevie's trip to Chile in 1979, about which there is so little information.

She mentioned it once that I remember: on the 1981 NBC Source radio special hosted by Denny Somack. She said that she was burned out after recording "Tusk," & went to Chile for a month afterward to try to regain strength & vitality & a new outlook. Apparently, the song "Bella Donna" came out of that experience.

Let's hear more about her Chile trip, lurkers!

Isn't there a thank-you on the Bella Donna album to someone in Santiago Chile?

Remember Benmont's comment about being in Chile during the session for Sanctuary?

That was my first thought! This is a little off topic and maybe I should start a new thread but when and what is Stevie talking about with *six weeks in a foreign country*. Did she just like the way it sounded or did she really live that and when?

I am sure a discussion of Destiny Rules will lead to much disagreement but Stevie wrote the song in Jan. 2002. I cannot think of one example where she would sit down and write a song about an event that happened twenty years ago. Yes, she would rework an old demo but to suddenly become inspired about an event from twenty years ago?
So, no I do not think the six week line refers to Chile. Besides I am sure Stevie has travelled many times in her life to foreign countries...that her fans do not know about.

I do think the line in DR is about an actual event..just a more recent event. An event that she would be inspired enough to write about in 2002. She hasn't commented much on the song, so no one really knows who or what it is about.

I agree. When she says " I didn't speak the language" I guessed she was speaking of some Asian or European Country (Germany, Sweden, Holland, Italy :D ?), since I assume, Americans are at least familiar with Spanish oriented languages

(that point being late October through late November 1983)

But, but, but.. Did she spend 6 weeks in a foreign country? Was she in one country for 6 weeks? Coz it sounds like she's saying it was one specific country. (Sorry to stay off topic and I should have started a new thread but this line always had me confused. Like is it something that sounded good or actually happened)?

When Benmont says he is in "Chile" does she say "Is up high, eh?" I can't figure out what she's saying there.

I think maybe she was not being literal in this phase. Maybe the foreign country was not an actual country but an emotional state that was foreign to her. A good example of that would be a love affair that lasted six weeks and then ended. The didn't speak the language goes along with that in that it ended because of lack of communication or an unwillingbess to compromise.

Strand, that is very insightful, & offers another perspective worth considering. You're a good guy, Strand.

Wow. You just blew me away again. I agree with David that this is a whole different way of looking at that line. It goes along with another one of her lines: *it's not like any words need to be said*. You could be right.

It makes a lot of sense. I've never thought to this perspective, thanks Jason.:)
