I recently learned that when Jon Bon Jovi first presented this song to
her, she didn't like it very much. Can't figure that out - any ideas?
Seems to me it was very "apro po," especially the video.
Maybe it was a little too close to the bone???

Sorry, I can't stand it, the lyrics are really awful, Bon Jovi should have kept his castles of candy for himself, IMO. :sorry: :)

That makes me sad:( :distress: These lyrics speak the words of my life. Everything that I have been through. My battle wounds, my ups and downs, my darkest hours. And of my good, that sometimes i can feel like i can sore like an eagle and all my worries are gone. they are also the words of Stevie's life too.

I think those lyrics use the most superficial and conventional way to speak the words of many people's lives, mine included. The facts and emotions are there but sometimes it's a bad soap opera, sometimes its Rumours or Bella Donna, or Trouble In Shangri-La. ;)

Yeah I do know Bon Jovi wrote those lyrics....I Love bon jovi too. But It makes me mad and sad that this is an "appreciation" thread and Serrart says its aweful....this songs is very special to me. And it hurts my feeling that u say that. Now I don;t sound very grown up....lol But i am 15 and I have very sensitive feelings. :distress: :(

There was a time when I really liked this song... and then a time when I really didn't.
I'm back to liking it again.

I think that if it had been recorded and released maybe about five years earlier, when everything Jon Bon Jovi touched was as good as gold, it would have been a huge hit.

I agree with you all the way on this one, Romy. But I was going to stay far away from this thread since it is titled Appreciation thread. I was always embarassed for Stevie when she did this one. But the video does rule.

Sorry, I can't stand it, the lyrics are really awful, Bon Jovi should have kept his castles of candy for himself, IMO. :sorry: :)I think it's pretty awful, too. Not a high point for Stevie in terms of covering material. Stevie's managerial people told her to try something by Bon Jovi because they (really wrongheadedly) thought that she needed something "youthful" & "popular" to connect to an audience again. But to select Bon Jovi ... I'm sorry, but that band was just so much cock rock -- bland, corporate, faceless, interchangeable with dozens of dumb songs by the likes of the hair bands of the late '80s & early '90s, like Poison & Whitesnake. Bon Jovi may have had a slightly better ear for melodic hooks, but otherwise this is very undistinguished music. To saddle Stevie Nicks with this goop was really a terrible, terrible idea. And of course, the song didn't knock anybody over; it just sank from nothing into nothing (ex nihilo ad nihilo?).

The other song she did -- the one by Poison -- was actually even worse. It's the kind of song that scrappy teenage boys might try to play in garages across America, trying to emulate their hair-band idols. These two songs stick out like inflamed hemorrhoids on "Timespace."

To top it all off, Stevie circa 1991 was not the vocalist to try to bring any charm to these lumbering, dumb songs. Maybe the Stevie of 1976 could have saved these songs, but it's just even more indicative of what a bad idea it was all around. Stevie really did need to go away for a little while, to remember how to feel.

The beginning beats pound your chest if you play it loudly in the car.

I think it's a fabulous song with a fabulous message....too bad it was released a few years past the 80s scene.

I don't particularly like the song. I do like the message in it though. And the video IMO just happens to be the best Stevie video ever!!! I love the way the lyrics seem to go perfectly with the video footage. And what wonderful footage it is! :D

I am a big fan of the Video. I just love seeing all of those clips! I think I read that some of the footage was compiled by Richard Wachtel. I am not too fond of the song, though.

I have always liked this song for the most part. I hate the "castles of candy" but I really quite like the rest. In fact....

There are days when I swear I could fly like an eagle
And dark desperate hours that nobody sees
My arms stretched triumphant on top of the mountain
My head in my hands...down on my knees

Those are my three favourite lines.

And it is probably one of my favourite Stevie videos ever. I especially love the look on her face when she sings, "and if I could, I'd do it all over again." I love that line - and I love that she sings it with such passion. I guess I love a lot about this song. :o

I think she did the best with what she could. I like the lyrics and think they are pretty cool for Bon Jovi. But, they are not very Stevie.

I do like the song every now and then though

Again, I saw this drag queen do a performance to it one time and she reached into a *&&^&& and came out with a treasure

It always makes me think of the candy room it the Talk To Me video, so I think the song worked for her. I wasn't sure about "bitch" at first. Bon Jovi was responsible for one of Chers' comebacks so I think that is why he was chosen. I think the song was played alot in europe because of "bitch," so it may have helped Stevie alittle.

I don’t hate this song but I’m far from a fan. What bothers me the most is that Stevie wasn't into doing it and it was somewhat forced upon her and for that reason it puts a bad taste in my mouth so to speak.

I can deal with it and I enjoy listening to it occasionally. I used to not like it at all so it’s grown on me but I try to ignore the trite lyrics and take in the message.

The video however is one of my top 5. Sensational and makes up somewhat for the mishap of the song. It's far better than the Brett Michaels crap.

Enchanted_Stevi - I appreciate your passion for this song and don't ever let anyone take that away from you! I know you are young but what you must understand is not everyone is going to share your sentiment about a song. Trust me I'm the biggest fan of The Nightmare you'll ever meet and a lot of people despise it but all that matters is what you think and what the song means to you. Everyone on the board is entitled to their opinion and although it may be an "appreciation" thread anyone can post here positive or negative. :xoxo:

the "head in my hands...down on my knees" line became particulary poignant for me when I was going thru my divorce...This song was played in semi-heavy rotation then. I go thru phases with it, but I really disliked it the first time out.

I don't think I loved it when it first came out, but over the years it has grown on me. And of course the video is one of her best. I guess as *I* have gotten older, I can relate to the lyrics more.

I really, really like this song, so I'd like to join the club, please.

I particularly like to sing along to it when I am in a bad mood, so I can emphasize the BITCH parts.

and if you replace the "well"s with "Bitch", like someone here said they did once, then you get to say Bitch A LOT....maybe I'll try that next time, too! hehehe

Okay, I don't ever like to poo poo anything Stevie's done and if you guys read through my threads you'll see they are all mostly flattering. And I do like this song. Not my favorite but it has some great imagery and he did really do a great job of capturing her life. I think he did write it specifically for her, didn't he?

Okay, here's my "bitch". "Was it all worth it only THE heart can measure". I hate the way this line is sung. I mean, if you are singing a bunch of words that are supposed to just sound cool together then fine, it works, but to sing something so litteral and put the accent on "the", well I just cringe every time I hear it. Sorry Stevie, I had to get that off my chest.

Sorry Stevie, I had to get that off my chest. Not that it eases the problem of which word is accented, but the line is actually, "what's it all worth, only the heart can measure."

I always thought "what's it all worth, only MY heart can measure," might have worked a little better.

And of course I don't really care for the song at all.

Initially I thought it was wonderful. I think I felt that way because I was going through my "Stevie can do virtually no wrong" phase.

I was in Los Angeles when this song was released and I must have listened to it about a thousand times that summer. TIMESPACE had yet to be released, but the single was available. And the video, of course, was a great one. I love the energy of this song. I think Bon Jovi did as good of a job as he could capturing what HE thought was a reflection on Stevie's life.

That being said, had this song been released about 3 years earlier, it would have been a HUGE hit, in my opinion.

And someone posted that this song sounds great really, really loud in a car.
I agree. Especially with a great stereo system...it's that energy, again.

I love this song!
