Gerald, Hayley and I, can't be the only fans of alt-country on this board can we?
I worship these bands/artists:

To name but a few. Any other fans out there?
well, Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams, I love those two. Especially Lucinda!
Heard a few things from the other bands you mentioned, guess I just haven't had the time to delve into those yet ;)
I don't know what would fall under that title, there's other artists who fall under 'more than just country' that I adore, like Emmylou Harris.
Edit, since we've agreed they're the Godfathers, I'm adding Neil Young and Gram Parsons to my list of favorites.

Gram Parsons, the Godfather of alt-country! love it.

I loves me some Gram!

If it wasn't for the Gram Parsons tribute Return To The Grieveous Angel, I wouldn't have gotten into Lucinda Williams, or the Cowboy Junkies, and look who's there too: Ryan Adams.. etc etc That's one excellent compilation.

I love it too! Wilco are on there as well. Oh and Sheryl, Emmylou and Steve Earle. Elvis Costello's version of Sleepless Nights is gorgeous too.
and Chrissie Hynde doing 'She', SO good. I think this is one of my top ten favorite albums :woohoo:
Ok. Wilco, Jayhawks.. what albums would you recommend?

Mmm, alt-country!
I'm going with my best friend to see Lu here in Chicago on Saturday, to celebrate my birthday. I haven't seen her live in a couple of years and I am so damned excited.

If you love Gram, run, don't walk to buy yourself some Jayhawks albums.
You NEED Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow The Green Grass.
If you're feeling a little more adventurous then Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Being There are the Wilco albums to buy.
Yay! I'm so glad you're into all the Americana stuff too :D

No, it's my favorite type of music. I love all the artists you've mentioned, and others like Patty Griffin, Allison Moorer, Steve Earle, Emmylou, Neko Case, Gillian Welch . . . I could go on and on. Right now, I'm on a Ryan Adams kick. I've had Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights on repeat for the last two days.

I love everything Sharon mentioned plus Earle, and Ray Wylie "screw you I'm from Texas, I'm from Texas screw you" -Hubbard.
Lately i'm into alt.countryrock:
Son Volt
Drive-by-Truckers....Wow that's friggin spectacular.
and older ones like....
Golden Smog
Any Wilco
and alt country spin-off lofi singersongwriters-rock like Grant Hart's Nova Mob. Their album The last days of Pompei is still something else. Sounds like ****, but keeps the blood pumping....everywhere.
By the way, The best lofi-album I've heard the last couple of years is something that totally slipped to my attention:
Dougal Reed's 2001 integral cover of Rumours. Thanks to Mari I'm hooked.
Mari, you can buy Marah's Kids In Philly blind. Top.

Oh me too. I was brought up on that stuff.
I just thought of another artist I love from the bluegrass school: Gillian Welch.
HEY now...you know I love Ryan Adams! And I adore Wilco, too
Sorry Moons, I didn't mean to leave you out :xoxo:
We Ryan fans should stick together!
You should check out The Jayhawks too

she's great!! Haha, wasn't brought up with it, though whenever I get a new album from one of the artists we discuss here I can give my mother a copy, because she loves it too. She brought me up with Bach, Rumours, CCR & traditional bluesrecords though

Wow that's alot better then being brought up with Fischer Chöre, Heino George Baker Selection and Boney M. I had great parents though....but musically, I guess I had to raise myself......
Through Rumours, The Kick Inside, Harvest, Pet Sounds and Rock 'n'Roll Animal I started off good. First single was Iggy's Lust For Life. But Tusk brought me up into the real raunchy stuff like early U2, Talking Heads, Blondie, Fischer-Z and alot later on Sonic Youth Pavement and so on....
She has Pet Sounds as well, actually!
I'm grateful for that, I think it's cool how she played all that stuff when we were growing up.. even though I didn't like Rumours when I was small, I thought it was all too loud
We always watched Toppop and Countdown together, how great is that.
Had to find out the 'raunchier' stuff myself too though, never could get her to like stuff like Nirvana :D

I saw some people mention Sun Volt and Ryan Adams. The bands that they were in before Uncle Tupelo and Whiskeytown are two favorites of mine as well.
If you have not heard the last two albums by Rodney Crowell Fate's Right Hand and The Outsider, check them out. The Outsider I will put up against any album of 2005!!

Everyone y'all have already mentioned...you just mentioned 1/2 of the acts at the ACL fest this year.
And my all-time favorites: Reckless Kelly (http://www.recklesskelly.com/index_content.html)
Gerald, I didn't know you were a Ray Wylie Hubbard fan - he was probably playing at the Saxon Pub when you were here!
I have a funny Ryan Adams/Kim Richey story: During SXSW a few years ago, my friend Lisa and I were hanging out in the VIP area at Stubb's. Ryan and Kim were having a conversation about songwriting. Ryan said he gets ideas from the most random **** - and he kept singing "Here comes the pizza guy!" We died laughing, guess you had to be there....but to this day, when I'm in a silly mood, I will sing it to myself and chuckle.
Rodney Crowell is getting tons of airplay here. So far, I like everything I've heard from his new album.

John, I forgot we have Rodney Crowell in common. The Outsider is AWESOME. I didn't think it was possible for me to like one of his albums as much as I like Fate's Right Hand, but I do. Totally rocks.
I really think that an essential album for any alt-country fan, or a fan of female voices, is Neko Case's newest record, the live album The Tigers Have Spoken. It's one of the few albums in the last five years that I consider an instant classic.

I didn't see this thread yesterday. I'm all about BR5-49. They're my second favorite band. They're kind of on the sidelines right now, because Bob Dylan stole their multi-instrumental show stopping guy, Donnie Heron, for his tour(F**K you, Bob Dylan- I'd say THAT to Bob Dylan!). BR5-49 is everything from hillbilly to punk, rockabilly to Texas Swing, all injected in you with a great sense of humor. More fun than a barrel of monkeys!

I was going to mention Reckless Kelly this morning, but I had to cut my post short....Also Nekko Case is way up there on my list. Others Kasey Chambers, Kathleen Edwards, Radney Foster all good stuff for the fan of Alt.Country. Which I find now to be the most listened to part of my collection. I must be getting old.

You know something, Best Buy has a suckass music selection. I went there yesterday and I wanted to buy an Emmylou Harris CD - they didn't have any. Patty Griffin - didn't have any. Rufus Wainwright - all they had was Want One. I was getting so pissed.... I don't have my Emmylou Harris CDs transfered to my computer yet, but I can hook you up with some Patty Griffin songs, if you're interested. :)
