View Full Version : Band Face Off - Round 3

It was a close call, but in the end those giants of rock, Plant, Page, Bonzo and Jones, beat out the powerful foursome of Daltrey, Townshend, Entwistle and Moon. There was only two votes in it though, with Led Zep winning 20 to 18.

The results so far:

Round 1: Petty defeats Springsteen - 31 to 17
Round 2: Led Zeppelin defeats The Who - 20 to 18

But as ever, the polls are still open, so things could still change.

Onto the next round and this time it's the battle of the pop babes.

Who is your favourite? Once again don't forget to defend your choice!

Madonna

I don't like Sheryl Crow and don't even own anything from Kate Bush.

So, Madge it is. I've always liked the broad.

Yuck. What slim pickins. I had to pick the best of the worst. Never could stand that Italian leo noise. Kate Bush frightens me. And well, had to go with the Crow. At least I love 1 album by her...her self titled second album. Ahhh...Sweet Rosalyn.

Never been much of a fan of Madonna, Sheryl Crow was good on her first couple of albums but after.. yawn. Kate Bush however, always brilliant :)

Kate B. is a very close second - I love her and her quirky talent knows no limit.

You are kidding me, right? I thought I presented a diverse choice here. Each is utterly brilliant in their own way, if you ask me.

This is only one round out of many. All anyone has to do is choose their favourites out of those presented, not their all-time fave

That's not the point. All people have to do is click on who they think is the best out of three choices. I don't expect every person to like every artist presented. These artists have all been discussed on The Ledge too, therefore relevant I thought.
Even if people hated all three, I thought people would have a preference to which is the best.

Ooh, which songs? I have a lot of the CD singles and they have "In Need," "Sa Sad World," "Keep On Growling," "No One Said It Would Be Easy," and "I'm Going To Be A Wheel Someday."

Last week I was playing The Globe Sessions and I noticed for the first time that once "Sweet Child O'Mine" is over, if you let it play for another minute of silence, there's bonus track. I was giddy over that discovery.

Obviously not everyone is going to like every selection.
I thought that since The Who and Led Zep were so close in the number of votes because mostpeople like both, it would be interesting to go the other way with a more diverse selection this time.

Without Kate Bush, Bjork would have never been accepted by a big audience. Remember, idiosyncratic artists need eachother -and their place in the collective memory- to push a little further every next time. Without the hardrock of the 70's and johnny rotten, the sound of Nirvana never would have been "big" audiencewise.

Kate Bush, how extreme peculiar she is, is still one of the female popicons in the world. And that with one album per decade and no touring. That's wat I call efficiency in popularity. That woman is brilliant songwise too. And vocally she outlives the other two easily.

So KATE it is for this round.

(please correct me Kate fans) I would say the most played song here in the States was "Running up that hill" but that is just scratching the surface and doesn't really give you an idea of her songs. The "whole story" is kind of a greatest hits, which why I suggested it. I don't have any download sites, but these are some of the basics to look for:

Tracks:
Wuthering Heights (4:57) / Cloudbusting (5:09) / The Man With The Child In His Eyes (2:38) / Breathing (5:28) / Wow (3:46) / Hounds Of Love (3:02)
Running Up That Hill (5:00) / Army Dreamers (3:13) / Sat In Your Lap (3:20) / Experiment IV (4:21) / The Dreaming (4:14) / Babooshka (3:29)

Here is a bigoraphy:

One of the most successful and popular solo female acts of the past 20 years to come out of England, Kate Bush is also one of the most unusual, with her keening vocals and unusually literate and complex body of songs. As a girl, Catherine Bush amused herself playing an organ in the barn behind her parents' house. By the time she was a teenager, Bush was writing songs of her own. A family friend, Ricky Hopper, heard her music and arranged for a demo to be recorded, which brought Bush to the attention of Pink Floyd lead guitarist David Gilmour. By the time Bush was 16, she had signed to EMI Records, though the company made the decision to bring her along slowly. She studied dance, mime, and voice, and continued writing. By 1977, she was ready to enter the recording studio and begin her formal career, which she did with an original song, "Wuthering Heights," based on material from Emily Brontë's novel.
"Wuthering Heights" rose to number one on the British charts. Bush became an overnight sensation at the age of 17 and was obligated to turn in an accompanying album in short order. This she did with The Kick Inside, a collection of material she had written over the previous three years; the album reached number three and sold over a million copies in the U.K.

Bush's second album, Lionheart, reached number six but didn't achieve anything like the sales totals or critical acclaim of its predecessor. In England during the spring of 1979, Bush embarked on what proved to be the only concert tour of her career to date, playing a series of shows highlighted by 17 costume changes, lots of dancing, and complex lighting. The tour proved both exhausting and financially disastrous, and Bush has avoided any but the most limited live concert appearances since, primarily in support of certain charitable causes.

By this time, Bush was established as one of the most challenging and eccentric artists ever to have achieved success in rock music, with a range of sounds and interests that constantly challenged listeners. "Babooshka" (1980) became her first Top Five single since "Wuthering Heights," and her subsequent album Never for Ever entered the British charts at number one in September of 1980. During this period, Bush began co-producing her own work, a decisive step toward refining her sound and also establishing her independence from her record company. Although 1982's The Dreaming reached number three, the single "There Goes a Tenner" failed to reach the charts, and most observers felt that Bush had lost her audience. Bush was unfazed by the criticism, and even began taking steps to make herself more independent of her record company by establishing a home studio.

After two years' absence, Bush re-emerged in August of 1985 with "Running Up That Hill," which reached number three on the English charts and became her second biggest-selling single. The accompanying album, Hounds of Love, the first record made at her 48-track home studio, debuted on the British charts at the number one position in September of 1985 and remained there for a full month, and soon after "Running Up That Hill" gave Bush her long-awaited American breakthrough, reaching number 30 on Billboard's charts. The changes in her sound and her development as a writer/performer were showcased in the January 1987 best-of collection The Whole Story. That same year, Bush won the Best British Female Artist award at the sixth annual BRIT Awards in London. In October of 1989, Bush's first new album in almost four years, The Sensual World, reached the British number two spot. Bush's next album, The Red Shoes (1993), debuted in the American Top 30, the first time one of her albums had ever charted that high. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

I picked Sheryl Crow, though I don't consider myself a fan per se. I have all but her latest album, but I only really like The Globe Sessions and one or two songs each from the others.
I do like some Madonna, "Like a Prayer" "Take a Bow" and "This Used to Be My Playground" jump to mind as favorites, but for the most part I could do without her.
As for Kate Bush, she loses by default. I can't vote in favor of an artist whose music I've never (as far as I know) even heard.

I know that, but Bjorks popularity really got a little " big " after 93. You can't say her career as a popicon started in 77 or during Kukl or The sugarcubes, in which she was a PART of the little succes that was growing. (fantastic punkpop-albums, nevertheless.)
Kate hit it off immediately in 77. And not only in England.....

Go away.

By the way, Kate's last album was The Red Shoes in 1993. She also had another album out in 1989 called The Sensual World. Kate's breakthrough in America actually came in 1985 when she scored a number one with Running Up That Hill from the album Hounds Of Love. Methinks you don't know much about Ms Bush.

As for Bjork I don't think her early work is as interesting as her later albums myself, whereas Kate has been releasing hugely inventive albums since the age of 18. And if you own that album of covers Bjork did as an 11 year old, I'll eat my hat.

As obsessed as I was with Madonna as a teen, she was out of the running.

But then I also love Sheryl's Anything But Down, Am I Getting Through, Weather Channel and many others too.

I had to pick Kate by virtue of the fact she has more songs in my Top 25 Played Songs.

I'm guessing he means Tappi TÃ*karass, but they were still early 80s and just a punkpop band.

I know, and definately not "big" as popicons.....

And if you own that album of covers Bjork did as an 11 year old, I'll eat my hat.

wherever you eat your hat that's my home

I add my paltry vote to the small number of Kate Bush votes ;) Madonna's just an old tart, Sheryl does very little for me musically, but Kate is a big talent. She wrote 'Man with the Child in His Eyes' at 13 if I remember correctly - astonishing.

Go away.

Charming.

Not sure why you have this angst for me. You make a post, invite comment and yet do not like what you read. Huh? You only like posts that have nice things to say? Let me know when your ego bubble bursts.

The fact of the matter is not everyone likes said bands/artists. I know you English fiercly love your artists, but be rational. Yes, Kate Bush has had quite a career and has loyal followers of her music. Great. I don't like her music. Yes, I like Bjork better and find Bjork far more interesting. Big deal. Your angst on me started when I commented that all choices were slim pickens. Big deal. Do I have to love them all or something?

After reading your earlier posts and making remarks about what I said, I was not about to ease up on my opinions just to stroke your deflated ego. I guess I do want to make clear that I do enjoy your Battle of the Bands posts but it seems I should stay clear of posts from you since you can not tolerate simple comments on band choices on a poll. Sheesh.

I'm glad you understood. Personally I would have mentioned Chuck Berry.
YES! Chuck Berry is a better choice to mention.

maybe just a little comic relief to lighten the mood :)

anyway..I picked Madonna. Not really a big fan of hers, but out of the three, she's my fav.

Kate Bush was/is Brilliant-
Always has been ---but I fear that a lot of the younger American's on the Ledge are not aware of her and I fear Madonna will win.
Personally , I think she has a lot of balls (Madonna), and does what she wants...but she really doesn't sing that well, she is a musical changing fad and she adapts to what ever is cool/ hip at that time- which is OK but she is no Kate Bush

And Sheryl, I do like, but it's that county twang type folky/kinda too Texas, moody funky , I want to fit in with the boys' kinda tunes.

Of the 3:

Kate shines above the rest....
Again, I don't think that many people know her music though...
I have introduced her to many of my friends and that has been over a 20 year period. People today are amazed by Tori Amos...and they have no idea who KT is...but as we all know who know KT's music...Without Kate Bush there would be no Tori Amos...
enough from me :p

Madonna: tripe
Kate Bush: nails on a chalkboard

...so I had to go with Sheryl on this one. :woohoo:
