I'm sitting here, a bawling mess, and I took the day off of work because my Sara started 1st grade today. It is her first day, in a new school, riding a bus, and I'm devistated. Why do they have to grow up so fast??? :(

Oh my - look at your beautiful baby girl!!!! What cute pictures....
I, personally, don't know how you feel - but my sister is in the same boat - my nephew will start first grade next week - and she's just very upset - they DO grow up way too fast....I still remember my little chubby baby nephew -and now he's going into first grade...i'ts crazy!!!

She's beautiful! And she looks excited to be going to first grade. It's hard, isn't it? My daughter starts first grade next month, and even though she's gone to all-day pre-k and kindergarten, it's going to be hard to just watch her drive away in the school bus. I'm used to driving her to school, chatting with the teacher, knowing all the kids.
They grow up so fast....
Let us know how her first day went....

I'm sorry, I being over-the-top.... but I'm really hurt. (pathetic, isn't it??) And I don't believe that yours will be starting her senior year. I'm still astounded that you're old enough to have an 18 year old!

Ah Maria - you're not pathetic...and I, too, was a bit apprehensive about opening the thread...
But then my first thought was actually, "Maybe the dingo ate your baby" :p
Anyway - I'm be anxious to hear all about Sara's first day of the first grade!!

Thank you! She is 6. She was in Kindergarten last year, but it was a daycare/Kindertarden, and I took her daily before I went to work. Plus, it was very small and very personal for the children. So, her going to a big school on a big bus has me very nervous. I just called the school to make sure she made it O.K. (over-the-top; pathetic! LOL...) She's there, safe and sound, and I won't have to worry until 4:00 when she rides the bus home! :o

Thank you. Yes it is hard. I'm still on here 2 hours later crying about it. That's how her kindergarten was... I knew the teachers pretty well, and I knew all the children. To them, I am "Sara's mom". Every day, I took her to school, the kids would come up, hug me, say "Hi Sara's mom".. it was so cute!!!

That's funny. I was always "Rachel's Mom." I'm sure Sara will do great, and you'll feel so much better when she's home later today and she tells you all about it, how fun the bus was, all her new friends, etc. Isn't it funny how the kids can be so eager to jump into new situations and the moms are the ones who need the hand-holding? It's also sad because it's like they don't need you as much. :(
Trust me, on September 6th, I'll be the same way you are now! Rachel will know pretty much everyone on the bus, but no one in her class. Even though she makes friends pretty easily, I worry about that. She can be shy. But I'm sure she'll be okay. I hope. :o

Aww she looks so darn cute! She looks really happy about going, too. I know that they do seem to grow up so fast. My 'little' cousin just graduated from high school this past June and it seems like just yesterday she was a baby.
If I ever do have a kid I am sure that I will feel the same way that you do about sending them off to school.
Good luck.

Well, ya'll, she did great! I knew she would. She really acts like she likes it. (for now at least) She said the bus schedule is a little crazy right now, but I told her in time it will calm down. They colored a little book about what they did their first day of school, and she had drawn a slice of pizza, that's what she chose for lunch. Go figure! And I got a good behavior report from her teacher. So, I'm a happy, (and not so nervous) mom.

I'm so glad to hear it all went well, Maria!
I worry about things like what happened at cheerleading practice tonight. One of the other girls, who was in pre-k with Rachel two years ago, was pulling the outer corners of her eyes and saying "do my eyes look nice like this?" I know her, and I know she was referring to Rachel's eyes. (She's Chinese) I don't think it really registered to Rachel what she was doing, but I worry about comment being made about her being Chinese. We've already had to explain to several kids that, yes, I am Rachel's "real" mom and some of her adoption story. That I don't mind so much, but I don't want her to be teased about being Chinese. (I've always taught her to be proud of her heritage.) So that's my main worry about her starting a new school.
Sorry. I didn't mean to go off on a tangent; it's just fresh in my mind because of what happened tonight.

Any child who is different from our norm is going to take some blows. Hopefully, Rachel will take it all in stride. Children can be terribly mean to eachother. I think it's neat that you adopted.

Yeah, I know it's something she's going to have to deal with, but I still feel the need to shield her from it. But so far she's been proud to be Chinese, and that will help her. You know what has really been surprising me? Is how girls this age, 6-7, talk about being "fat." My nieces, who are 3 and 4, told Rachel and her other cousin they were "fat" just because they have bellies. When it reality, the 3 and 4 year olds are skin and bones. They hardly eat! It just kills me that this kind of thing comes up so young.

Sara is by no means little, she's not overweight, but she's a little tall for her age. She's also a little stocky. She recently informed me she's going on a diet. I let her know there's nothing at all wrong with her, and pointed out my own spare tire. I'm not proud of it, but she dosen't see me ovely obsessed with loosing weight either. Blame it on the little skinny minnies these girls are watching on TV.

My nephew started the first grade yesterday -and had a great day! Many of his little friends from Kindergarten are in his class - so he's happy about that.
But then on wednesday's he goes to an after school recreation program because his school gets out early on Wednesdays  He HATED that - my sister went to pick him up and said she looked around and then spotted him sitting alone at a table..looking all sad.
He saw my sister - ran to her - threw his arms around her and burst into tears :( He hasn't acted like that since he was itty bitty. Poor guy - apparently not a fan of the after-school program :distress: Luckily it's only one day a week.

Well I just got an update...he did have one friend there, Zane - he was in kindergarten with him. Well at the after-school program my nephew would go sit by Zane and Zane would just keep moving - so my nephew got very sad and rejected and just went off on his own.
My sister then suggested he ask Zane why he was doing that and Zane's reply? "I Just have better friends than you" :distress: Ah the trauma of being a kid. My nephew was so upset and didn't understand why Zane would say that :( poor kid - but hey I'm sure it's not the worse thing that'll happen to him in school - kids are so mean

That really sucks. Kids can be so mean. I'm sure your nephew will have new friends in no time. I get upset when kids exclude other kids. My one neighbor's daughter is 5 and is either VERY immature for her age or has something else going on (ADHD?) and a lot of kids don't like to play with her because she's disruptive. She screams for no reason, doesn't follow rules of games, hits, and is often just in her own world. But I still hate to see her excluded, and Rachel has started doing this. We've been friends with this girl's parents for almost 20 years, so to see our kids not be best friends is hard. So if she's out, I watch closely to make sure she's not being excluded.
I hope it gets better for your nephew soon.

Oh yeah - he'll get over it - he's got a multitude of other friends - I think it was just hard because Zane was the only kid he knew at the program. But he's not even in the same class as him anymore- so I'm sure it'll be no big deal in no time.
I get to see my nephew this weekend (I'm going to NM ) and I'm SOOO excited :blob1:

Kids are mean as hell, aren't they??? I hate to see them be hateful or seeing them being excluded, but they are learning to be great ex-wives and husbands one of these days!

That's hilarious...
My nephew had this little friend (girl) who was such a little princess - she was already down with manipulation and all that evil girl stuff...she was SUCH a brat.
Anyway - my sister and I would always joke about her making some guy's life miserable one day...she eventually stopped letting my nephew play with her.
