Which Fleetwood Macster once said, "In the '60s, rock 'n' roll was a change of attitude -- a drastic change which I think the Beatles were hugely responsible for"?
Trick question...its a bogus quote.

this thread was really good and now its just getting stupid! its a stupid competition between the buck and chiffonheads! for gods sake i think most of you know really that neither stevie or lindsey should rightfully be out this soon and theres a load of people who should be out before them!
You know what? I used to get so upset when the LB/SN factions fought. Then I realized, it was mostly amusing. It sure gets the blood pumping, and a good argument is even more fun to me than trying to decide which Dave or Bob gets the boot.
So don't sweat the small stuff!

You people are sick. You've turned this into Lindsey vs. Stevie. And I've been sitting here attempting to choose between the two and concluded that Stevie should go.
Lindsey's a prodigal guitarist, producer, performer, and songwriter. Stevie is also brilliant and certainly gave the band it's mystique, however without Lindsey a majority of her songs wouldn't be quite as good. I firmly believe she shouldn't make a record without him as producer.

Lux informed me that this is how the game is played and that to vote someone off is a compliment to them, so I'm giving Lindsey the ultimate in compliments by voting him off in all caps. It's kind of a shame because I'd like to see Stevie and Lindsey in the final. But, I'd rather pay Lindsey the compliment. Soo, hasta la vista, baby. :wavey:

Same with John: he would be nauseated by all this hoohah.
So I really want Christine McVie to emerge victorious. Imagine, if you will: CHRISTINE MCVIE . . . CONQUERS THE WORLD!!

No, I'd rather be a fatalist loser...WITH taste and culture in stead of Lightness and Cocktails for Brains.Ah, but you automatically assumed that by "success," I was speaking of fame and fortune.
I feel touching the lives of massive audiences with a very unconventional voice, abstruse lyrics and only limited musical ability is a true success.
Anyone can appeal to the ears with bells, whistles and other technical wizardry... I'm more impressed by someone who can appeal to the heart. And the hearts of hundreds of thousands, at that.
That's what this cultured gentleman calls a "success"... music-theory elitists and self-appointed intelligentsia be damned. ;)

Ah, but youI feel touching the lives of massive audiences with a very unconventional voice, abstruse lyrics and only limited musical ability is a true success.I've said it before & I'll say it again: Stevie plays piano better than Christine does.
Anyone can appeal to the ears with bells, whistles and other technical wizardry. No, actually anyone can't. A lot of people amass technique & facile tricks & then bombard you with them, but the resultant junk doesn't necessarily appeal to your eyes or any other part of your body.
I'm more impressed by someone who can appeal to the heart. And the hearts of hundreds of thousands, at that.Stew, it's okay to prefer "The Sound of Music" (remember Kael's description of moisture being "squeezed out of millions of eyes & ears"?) to "Citizen Kane." Don't apologize for it!
It's unfair & inaccurate of you to make the Fleetwood Mac situation a zero sum game: either you're emotionally moving millions of people or you're nothing but a technician. Sometimes you're doing both & sometimes you're doing neither. The greatest of artists join feats of technique with that emotional strength that you find in Jean Renoir ("The Rules of the Game," "A Day in the Country"). In such artists, form & content truly become insoluble.
Furthermore, some of the greatest "emotional" artists never became widely known, let alone loved, until decades after their death -- if at all.
Finally, as regards my "Sound of Mucus" ... er "Music" mention, it's always been true that much of what appeals to people's emotions can be superficial, tearjerky, mawkish, trite, banal, sentimental, etc. Moving thousands or even millions of people can't in & of itself be considered an aesthetic virtue. The work still has to stand by itself & be judged in at least somewhat formalistic terms.
By the way, I reject that "emotional" label for art because it sets up a false dichotomy. All great & even good art has emotional impact -- otherwise, it wouldn't last by resonating with generation upon generation. Even a highly cerebral, technically complex Bach fugue connects with listeners emotionally -- often in a way that is much more lasting & powerful than the more syrupy sounds of, say, a Michel Legrand theme.

I chose Lindsey too for reasons I mentioned at the time, but I still have to defend Stevie.
I highly doubt the people here are voting because they're attracted to chiffon. It's more than that. It's the person, the lyrics, and the melody. As it is with you and Lindsey. I've never bought into rivalry. I like The Who and Zeppelin. I like The Stones and The Beatles. I can appreciate both options (even though I obviously prefer Zep and Beatles to the others). Let's not turn this into insults.
You know how happy Lindsey makes you? There are a lot of people on this board who love Stevie in that same way. Like I love Bono. When someone says they hate him or U2 I get so mad and sad I could cry. What if someone had posted something this insulting about you as a Lindsey fan and about Lindsey? You'd be hurt and we both know it. I'm just saying don't just assume the Stevie fans only enjoy scarves and boots, cause it's about a lot more than that.

No, actually anyone can't. A lot of people amass technique & facile tricks & then bombard you with them, but the resultant junk doesn't necessarily appeal to your eyes or any other part of your body.Grr. I should have said "many" people. :p
I was thinking in terms of "one hit wonders" and material like that. Stuff that appeals to a mass audience solely because it sounds good... gets you humming and your toes tapping. But ultimately fades from memory, because it didn't really speak to your soul.
Stew, it's okay to prefer "The Sound of Music" (remember Kael's description of moisture being "squeezed out of millions of eyes & ears"?) to "Citizen Kane." Don't apologize for it!You may be surprised to know (but, then again, maybe you wouldn't be surprised, David) that I love both 'Sound Of Music' and 'Citizen Kane.'
I'm not an "either/or" person. I find value in quite a number of seemingly opposing works of art.
It's unfair & inaccurate of you to make the Fleetwood Mac situation a zero sum game: either you're emotionally moving millions of people or you're nothing but a technician. Sometimes you're doing both & sometimes you're doing neither. It's a lame defense on my part, I admit.
From the Buckingham fans, one is always hearing how Nicks fans are merely mindless lemmings, taken with Stevie the way an infant might be with a shiny object. That she's all flash and no substance.
They come out firmly on the side of Stevie being an airhead's delight.
In terms of their solo work, I do think that Stevie's material was more popular/appealing, because it tends to be more visceral. Lindsey's technical proficiency may make him a critical darling, but I think his reliance on studio wizardy also alienated a lot of people who want to feel a kinship with the artist.
But of course music doesn't have to be one or the other. Certainly you can create something that's not only technically brilliant but emotionally resonant as well. And certainly you can create something that resonates with massive amounts of people without it being mere pablum.
That "Nicks fans aren't smart enough to appreciate Lindsey's art" claim is extremely elitist, far too simplistic, and completely misguided.
If I were a more articulate man, I'd be able to offer a more insightful counter argument -- I know I'd sure love to hear you debate the view that anyone who doesn't appreciate Buckingham's music must be a chowderhead!
Finally, as regards my "Sound of Mucus" ... er "Music" mention, it's always been true that much of what appeals to people's emotions can be superficial, tearjerky, mawkish, trite, banal, sentimental, etc. Moving thousands or even millions of people can't in & of itself be considered an aesthetic virtue.Certainly that's not true in every situation... otherwise, I shudder to think what all of those Top 20 hits imply about Christine's songwriting! ;)

(Not to mention I don't really understand why Stevie and Lindsey have to be pitted against each other). I love Stevie for the voice and lyrics--the looks and clothes alone are definitely not enough to keep me coming back. In fact if it were just those, I wouldn't have really been a fan to begin with.

That's what critics said of Douglas Sirk's movies.
Besides after TV invention (as Sirk remarked too in one of his best movies;)) aesthetic virtue of a work of art is a quite volatile and ductile subject.

Well. I'm sorry dude. I've never read such a bunch of crap in my life. Success is not to be explained. You meant " success" And Lindsey's lack of it. I wish you all the best in your own world. But I know better. And if you don't hear "heart" in go insane, for instance, (bells whistles and other technical wizardry" you simple haven't listened to all those voicetracks he built up and sang from his guts. I'm sorry but Stevie did not do a vocal performance last tour like Lindsey did during "Come" or " SaY goodbye" or "NGBA". Only Beautiful Child came equally close.

I actually think both Lindsey and Christine are incredibly mainstream. And that's not a criticism. Have you read that book that came out last year about the making of Rumours by Cath Carroll? It details how many different things came together to help make it, at that time, the biggest selling album of all time. It didn't simply sell because it's a great record, although that obviously helped. It sold because all the other factors fell into place, helping it break big.
I'm pretty sure a lot of similar factors helped Stevie become a solo superstar while Lindsey didn't, but it easily could have been the other way round. There's not one Lindsey solo album, that doesn't contain a pure pop song that could have, if the circumstances been right, been a number one single. And Christine has never been shy of embracing her love of pop music either.
And secondly, I totally agree with you about Peter!

Both of them could have enjoyed commerical success just as much as Stevie, IMO. But I think there's something attractive about the fact that they didn't. Part of it is this desire that I have (perhaps others as well) to be able to say, "Well, one of my faves in the band is so and so," and have someone say "Who the heck is that? The only one I know is Stevie." Eh, I'm being silly.

No, I know exactly what you mean. I've definitely enjoyed liking more obscure artists, simply because no one knew who they were. I think you feel like they belong to you more - does that sound weird? Even though I know you're kidding, I think Christine could have, in the 70s at least. Other than her music, she definitely had an attitude and style that is very rock star sexy. I would have loved to have read one of those romantic Rolling Stones articles focused on Christine from the 70s - I can just imagine it, Chris with cigarette in one hand, bottle of wine in another, as tipsy as she is witty. But I don't think Christine ever cared enough to push that, I think she was happy enough standing behind the keyboards letting the other members bask in the limelight myself.

Yea. We'll accept your concession. And when Stevie wins this "stupid" game ;) , we'll let her know she won by throwing a note attached to a unicorn beanie baby up on stage while she's rocking the house on one of her upcoming shows on The Gold Dust Tour. I'm sure she'd love to know.
A tour of which I've purchased tickets to 2 shows for. See, I'm a fan. I was just continuing on a running joke. Many apologies if it went over your head.
Unless of course, you're carrying it on as well. To which I would say "Kudos" for keeping it alive.

Yep. I agree with you :)

I think Lindsey is many things at the same time as a solo artist but nothing too convincingly. Then there are some songs or, more often, parts of songs that reflect a great talent probably not always correctly driven. Christine's albums sound mainstream to me in the music but I love her lyrics that many times have inside an unexpected ironic or self-ironic, touching, straight look on life and feelings.
About Peter Green, he would be my second choice after John McVie. He deserves a medal for resisting all these years with all those divas.

Only Beautiful Child came equally close.Completely exasperating, isn't it, when people write off your favorite artist with just a few pithy sentences?
Of course Lindsey's music has heart... otherwise I, the over-passionate Italian with his heart ever on his sleeve, wouldn't be a fan.
Personally, I think 'Go Insane' is a masterpiece... but I can also understand exactly why it didn't knock a million people's socks off (and I don't think it has anything to do with that "people aren't bright enough to 'get it'" baloney). Just the same as I can see exactly why Stevie has as many detractors (if not more) as she has fans.
But as long as Buckingham fans keep ridiculing Nicks fans, I'm going to keep piping up.
I'm sorry but Stevie did not do a vocal performance last tour like Lindsey did during "Come" or " SaY goodbye" or "NGBA". Only Beautiful Child came equally close."Gypsy," "Gold Dust Woman," "Sara," "Stand Back" and "Goodbye Baby" rivaled those performances, IMO.

Good for you. You'll love the concerts. Stevie is on fire. She may even become your favorite. I'm considering going to a second show this tour myself. IT WAS THAT GOOD!

Of course. And thank you.

I've been known to do stranger things.

Is that really true?
I admit I haven't been into this game (mainly because I don't know all the members of FM past that well and I've also found it to be a little cruel), but I saw this and had to ask. I hope Lindsey isn't actually telling Stevie how to dress. That's just bizarre beyond words.
No I was just kidding. Stevie said (If I recall correctly) during the recent interview with Jim Ladd that Lindsey asked her to dress more casual (on Stevie standards) during SYW tour. I think it was just an advice from a friend to another, as it happens every day to us, even if IMO she decided for her own reasons, to be more subtle touring with FM.

MmmK. That's cool. :) It's not like he was telling her specific things to wear, just looking out for her. Perhaps he is a little conservative/protective, though he does unbutton his shirts rather low- but, hey, a man gets hot.

If I left my job and they hired two people to do what I did, I'd go around gloating about it too. LOL
Thank God Bob Welch was a bit kinder. ;)

Thank God Bob Welch was a bit kinder. ;)All this silly stuff about having to hire two guys to replace one guy is just . . . silly. It's not even true. They hired ONE guy to replace Buckingham: Rick. Rick was the ONLY guy who played lead guitar in the band during his tenure. Billy NEVER played lead guitar in Fleetwood Mac -- EXCEPT during "Landslide." And that was probably just a novelty idea, something that he & Stevie wanted to try.
The REAL problem with whom the band hired after Lindsey left was that they didn't hire ANYONE to replace Buckingham in the engineering/production department. So the band suffered for that, relying on a guy, Greg, who had a reputation & a CV, certainly, but no real brilliance & no vision. The sad result was that he botched the new tunes on the '88 album & botched the entire '90 album.
Fleetwood Mac should have replaced Lindsey with Daniel Lanois Thomas Dolby or someone with studio genius.
