View Full Version : Beautiful Child, Setlist rant, blah, blah, blah...

Beautiful Child- I'm sad that I will probably never hear this live again. I wish she would have done this one for her solo tour... it went over so well on the SYW tour. Why would she continue to play a stale song like Landslide when she clearly enjoyed singing Beautiful Child more? This song didn't just please the fans but it seemed clear to me that this was one of her favorites from that tour and she really, truely enjoyed doing that song. Too bad when she got rid of INTK she didn't bring this song into the set instead of Landslide...

And while we are on the topic, what about Sara? This is a big hit yet she only did it on the sheds tour and isn't doing it on the Gold Dust tour. I loved this song live and would much prefer this to Dreams or Landslide or Gold Dust Woman.

Just my random thoughts, sorry!

I guess what I am trying to say is that she has a big catalog yet only uses a fraction. I guess in a way, it is a good thing she only pulled those songs out for the SYW tour or else they would become tired set list staples too.... I don't even mind most of the songs on the setlist, there are just like three that I think need to go- Landslide, Gold Dust Woman, and Dreams could all stand to be replaced.

And the thing is, if she didn't do those songs live for a couple of tours, then they would be fresh again when she did decide to pull them out and they would be special once more. Like Sara- it used to be a setlist staple, then she quit doing it for a while and it was an extremely special song on the SYW tour. It was exciting because she never does that song.

Chris.. i understand your pain.. but 75% of her audiences go to see her because they want to hear "Landslide", "Dreams", Gold Dust Woman", and "Rhiannon"... she knows this, and that's why she always performs them... i'm sure she doesn't want to sing them anymore than you or i want to hear them... but unfortunately she has to please the masses :(

If everyone who went to her concerts, were as big of fans as we are, I'm sure their might be a possibility that she would do this...but the majority of people who are at the concert, are just casual fans...and they wanna hear the hits like Brian said.
Yes, those 3 songs you mentioned can get old...but even being as big of a fan as I am, and loving the rarely played/never played songs as much as I do, I would be disappointed if I went to a show of Stevie's, and she didnt' sing those songs. I don't care if I've heard Dreams a million times...it was her biggest hit-her most played song with Fleetwood Mac to this day-she has to sing it.
One more this to add- I can't call Gold Dust Woman old at the moment, cause that new ending she's been doing lately totally rocks! (ooh baby baby baby baby baby...you can't see me now...you should see me now...) Nobody sings "baby" like Stevie.

You're absolutely right...if she only makes her setlist to please us she will not be making the money she's making, playing the large venues she's making...and sorry but that does matter to her..

If she filled her setlist this year with songs most of these people have never even heard of, people would be going "WHAT?" they want to hear the sings theyre familiar with...of course WE are familiar with them all, but most people at her shows are not

When Beautiful Child came on the people sitting next to me at the Jones Beach SYW show were saying "WTF is this song about?"

It's always bothered me that she skips entire albums in her solo setlist. At least do Rooms On Fire and Blue Denim if she wants only singles. I know she & most fans aren't crazy about those years, but there were some good songs worth doing off of two whole albums.

Everybody always points out that she chooses her songs with the casual fan in mind, but that doesn't explain why she'd do B&TB instead of If Anyone Falls and HAEWAFY instead of Talk To Me. I think she has honestly convinced herself that her devotees themselves (ourselves? :) ) actually prefer hearing Dreams and Landslide as long as she throws in HAEWAFY & B&TB, two lesser known and more cultish tunes. While I salute her dedication to the One Campaign, I am tired of HAEWAFY at this point. There are so many ballads she might choose.

If Stevie had her thumb on our pulse these days in terms of songs (she finally does in terms of wardrobe) she would not have missed the opportunity to do acoustic Gypsy with Lindsey on the SYW Tour. The overwhelming majority of people here raved about the AHI version while saying the standard version doesn't work live.

As for Beautiful Child, I liked it on SYW, but it van be left there. I'd rather she do something new, and like every other Ledgie, I'd have tons of suggestions.

Much like Circle Dance seems to be for her father, perhaps Landslide is as well? As much as I love Beautiful Child, to me, it's reserved for Fleetwood Mac. I can see how Dreams, Rhiannon, Landslide can go either way--either Fleetwood Mac or Stevie solo (much as I feel they take up too much space in her setlist). However, I can't imagine Beautiful Child without the rest of the band--simple as that.

I agree to a point: like Jake said, if she is going to only do "hits" then why are HAEWAFY & Enchanted in there? And I think Rooms on Fire & Blue Denim should be in - most people would recognize Rooms on Fire, at least. Talk To Me & I Can't Wait - don't get me started! I'd kill to have her do either of those again.

Now, I disagree that she should be doing Sara or BC. She does too many Mac tunes as it is. And I think it made it more special that BC was done on ONE TOUR ONLY. Bringing out Sara for the last few months of SYW was also a very special thing to me - kind of like the Stevie & Don shows: there were so few, so it makes it stand out more.

Landslide has become the signature song for Stevie with or without Mac, IMO. The Dance & then The Dixie Chicks pushed it into the mainstream public's consciousness & it's not going anywhere. Everyone in the crowd sings along to that tune & she loves it. Plus, no matter how we fanatic fans may want to hear something else - it's a damn good song & she still sings it well! Yes, people know Rhiannon (although I'll bet many think it's "Breanna" or something similar  ) and Dreams probably known as "Thunder only happens when it's raining.") But you say "Landslide" & most people will know exactly which song you're talking about.

This kills me. As much as I enjoy the cover songs, she should sing her own stuff. All those years she bitched about getting her songs out there and having her own songs on albums....now it seems that she doesn't appreciate them.

Moreso than that, I think she has a great deal of apprehension about trying new things. She's used to her staples and if the fans are still coming out to see her, why should she change them? I think she's always had reservations about how much she can handle.

yeah, but Circle Dance is not a staple.. neither is Rock And Roll, Sorcerer, Fall From Grace, How Still My Love, So You Wanna Be A Rcok N Roll Star, etc.. yet she performed all those songs this year alone...

personally i think Rooms On Fire would have be an awesome opening song in Vegas.. but instead she opens with Enchanted

Okay let me clarify my 5 in the morning ramblings!

I don't really hate any of these songs and I do enjoy them still. I just think she could spice things up a little more. And when I really look at the setlist there are only like 3 songs I would like replaced, so really that is not that much. And I still really enjoy those songs, I just have heard them a billion times.

Well, the only explanation I can offer up for Beauty & The Beast is that it's on Timespace. So, the casual fan may think that this was a hit. But, the other three you mentioned are there too.

Well, HAEWAFY was a single so that explains that.

And B&theB seems to please both the casual fan and the big fans too. In Vegas the casual fans even seemed enchanted with that song.

I took my boss to Vegas (she had never seen Stevie live, and only knew her from the radio) and she was totally enchanted with Beauty & The Beast. When we left, she said 'that was the most intense concert' she'd ever been to. She's 38, and has been to dozens of concerts, but usually bands like Social D. or Korn.

Now, when she hears B&TB, she says it's 'her' song. I think that's kinda cool.

It was hardly a hit. (Had a decent photo on the cover, though.) If singles were what she looks to perform, hold your breath for After The Glitter Fades.
I don't think HAEWAFY being a single explains its presence in the setlist at all.

I'm not talking about initially. I'm talking about now. She did I Can't Wait and Nightbird when they were singles as well. I was making the point that people had said she designs the set list for the casual fan, & I don't think that the inclusion of HAEWAFY or B&TB fit this pattern.

For some of us who have been hearing it live since the 80s, it would be nice to hear a different song. Especially when the song, sparse as it is, has not varied tremendously.

I agree.. it wasn't a hit and it really shouldn't be a staple in her set in the way Dreams or Rhiannon or Landslide should be... I think she should absolutely do her hits, but songs like HAEWAFY and BATB and Enchanted need to not become staples...

songs she should always do:

Rhiannon
Landsilde
Dreams
Gold Dust Woman
Stand Back
Edge Of Seventeen
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around

Those 7 songs are her most recognizable and should probably always be done... however, the rest of the set should be mixed up on a regular basis... i don't think casual fans or hardcore fans would be dissapointed to see a setlist like this for example:

1. Outside The Rain
2. Dreams
3. Rooms On Fire
4. Sara
5. Wild Heart
6. Stand Back
7. Landslide
8. Blue Denim
9. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
10. Seven Wonders
11. Gold Dust Woman
12. Think About It
13. If I Were You
14. Edge Of Seventeen
15. Rhiannon

or like this

1. Outside The Rain
2. Dreams
3. Fall From Grace
4. Gold Dust Woman
5. Long Way To Go
6. Sara
7. Stand Back
8. Kind Of Woman
9. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
10. That's Alright
11. Juliet
12. Landslide
13. Rhiannon
14. Edge Of Seventeen
15. Love Is

or like this

1. Outside The Rain
2. Dreams
3. Violet And Blue
4. Rhiannon
5. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
6. Nightbird
7. No Spoken Word
8. Landslide
9. Stand Back
10. Silver Springs
11. Gold Dust Woman
12. Planets Of The Universe
13. Edge Of Seventeen
14. Nothing Ever Changes
15. Storms

her 7 "staple" songs are in every one of these setlists, yet they are all completely different... doesn't she realize she can do so much more than what she does??? if she did 3 different tours with these three different setlists, i don't think anyone would be bitching that she "always does the same songs"... i just honestly believe she has no clue had to do a setlist... i can't for the life of me understand how "Enchanted" became a staple in her set.. it's not a great song imo, it was never a hit, and it was never a single... but there it is, at every single show :distress:

Yeah, this is sort of what I meant. As long as she is still doing a bunch of hits then why do the rare songs also have to constantly be the same? The people that recognize a song like Enchanted are the big fans who have seen her a million times and would prefer a different song anyway.

I would be just as happy to see Talk To Me instead of SDYHA as one of the seven staples you name. She didn't write either of them & they both did well on the charts. And I don't think SDMHA has sounded great live in recent years. I'd be up for seeing what she could do with TTM.
And for the record, I think Gypsy & Sara are pretty recognizable as well.

I disagree about TTM & ROF, especially with the resurgence in popularity of 80s tunes all around.

Also, I don't think even she sees SDMHA as a staple. If I recall, she seems to have grabbed for it after Waddy pushed for the song Bella Donna to open the 2001 tour, and I'm sure that scared the crap out of her.

Mick is the only person that should play drums on that song.

yeah, but Circle Dance is not a staple.. neither is Rock And Roll, Sorcerer, Fall From Grace, How Still My Love, So You Wanna Be A Rcok N Roll Star, etc.. yet she performed all those songs this year alone...

personally i think Rooms On Fire would have be an awesome opening song in Vegas.. but instead she opens with Enchanted

It's okay and all but it's not really the same without her wailing "I said whoa" at the end.

You think you have? There's some of us who've been around a lot longer and have heard them many more times than you, young squire. Do you know how many times I've heard Dreams? Stand Back? (and I love that song but I'm f'ing tired of it).
All in all though, I know I should be grateful that Stevie's still around. It could have worked out a whole lot differently.

For some of us who have been hearing it live since the 80s, it would be nice to hear a different song. Especially when the song, sparse as it is, has not varied tremendously.

- Jake
It has varied at all, IMO, especially the "When they ask her about the men in her life" speech at the end. They were poets, priests of nothing, legends. Yes, we know.

The key is too low now and it takes all the punch out of the song. It just needs to be dropped. She can substitute it with one of her other rocking songs that don't need to be dropped so far down that they sound draggy.

She can't sing it anymore in it's original key and I don't think it's the type of song that could be lowered to a suitable key for her.
Perhaps the musicians on the board could explain it a little better?

I disagree after hearing her nail B&B and Circle Dance. TTM, is in that same range except for a few notes and she could easily rely on the three girls to go there for her.

In the end, I think once she gets it into her head that she no longer wants to do a song for whatever reason, she never really varies.

Didn't she say in an interview that pretty much nothing that came after RAL was any good to her? Until TISL that is

Chris

That's BS. Her songs are like her children. I think she only says that due to a lack of sales because those records did not sell as well as she'd hoped.

LiquidBlue5000

I disagree about TTM & ROF, especially with the resurgence in popularity of 80s tunes all around.

Also, I don't think even she sees SDMHA as a staple. If I recall, she seems to have grabbed for it after Waddy pushed for the song Bella Donna to open the 2001 tour, and I'm sure that scared the crap out of her.

- JAKE

Well, she did perform SDMHA on the Bella Donna Tour, Wild Heart Tour, Rock A Little Tour, TimeSpace Tour, Enchanted Tour, TISL tour, and now her current tour... so basically, 7 of her 9 solo tours.. i would say she probably considers it a staple in her set ;)

Well, she could have written most of it prior to 88 and she may not have been so deep into it. I mean she seemed lucid and clear on the TITN tour. Plus, La Nicks graduated into the Klonopin addiction and later added lots of valium, etc. - at least according to her. So, I tend to think she is correct when she says most of TOSOTM was written by the time it really started to get to her. I personally think her really bad years were 1989 to 93 as that was when she looked like a total mess on stage, though she did not look that messy for the BTM show I saw in Dallas.

Honey I heard her sing that "Well babe you've taken all my dreams, isn't that enough" at Red Rocks on The Timespace Tour live into the mic, no ear monitor and no help from the girls. I got chills. It sounded just like the RAL recording. She also did a blazing version of Rhiannon with the "all the same" part sung in the higher register. This kills me. As much as I enjoy the cover songs, she should sing her own stuff. All those years she bitched about getting her songs out there and having her own songs on albums....now it seems that she doesn't appreciate them.

I hear you on this one!!! Why, when the set list is this short, would she include these covers??? She should be singing her own things!!! And to reply to the other posts, I also agree that we will probably not hear BC again, at least solo. That seemed like something special that she did with FM and will more than likely save it to sing with them. The SYW tour was the first time in 25 years that she ever sang it live and even stated that she never thought and always wanted to sing it!!! So that, IMO, is her special FM song to sing! Likewise with Sara. Hasn't sung it live since Robin died. IMO, it was Lindsey that convinced her to sing it again...so if we ever hear it after SYW, it'll be with FM!!!
As far as other things that she could be singing solo, I too am disappointed that she added landslide. That song is so dull and burnt out, but like you all said, she HAS to play the hits for the majority- Dreams, Rhiannon, GDW, Landslide. But really, what would a stevie show be without rhiannon or gdw??? IMO, instead of adding landslide, she could have added another slower song, such as Bella Donna or Kind of Woman. She said that she wanted to do songs that she hasn't done in a long time...well there you go sister...it's slow, the key is still within her range, and people would go crazy over it...I know I would!!! Everyone has been saying for years, "when will she sing SOTM again???" Well, the key changes a bit much, the notes go to high and I just don't think she has the energy for it anymore. So, a friend and I were talking about it one day and said, hey, why not do the piano version of it??? It wouuld still be the song, but it would be slower so she can handle it, the key is a bit lower, and she wont have to put alot of energy into it!!!! I would DIE to hear a piano/acustic version of that!!!

Ok I have to chime in on this thread because as most people know this is my favorite era. First off I want to say that I got this recording of some guy talking to her on the phone from 96 after one of those benefit shows she did. The guy said something about ghosts and how it affected him and she said that was truly her favorite album. Now I don't know if she was saying this to comforthim or really telling the truth.

I don't think that her voice could really handle talk to me these days even though I would love to hear it. I don't understand why she doesn't do anything from OSOTM or SA anymore. I'd rather hear something from OSOTM but I like a lot off SA too.

Another thing, a lot of the OSOTM masters were dated in late 88 if that means anything and the songs sounded very finished to me at that point.

One more thing, when OSOTM and SA came out she did a good amount of songs from that album. I was surprised she included Docklands and Destiny. iwas also surprised that Alice and Juliet made the OSOTM set. Same with the TISL set. She did a ton of songs from that album (even if they didn't play that well). Another idea I thought of was maybe her management only allows her to do a certain amount of songs. Maybe the band members have an opinion?

My 2 cents

Jimmy

I think so too. In fact, I think Stevie tends to start off touring thinner then she ends up at the end of the tour - present tour accepted as of now. I mean she was very thin the beginning of SYW when the DR doc was filmed - but she was noticeably heavier - though still lovely - a year and a half later. Same for TISL.

I think she was actually at her skinniest since the 80's at the begining of the SYW tour. Look at how tiny she is on opening night in the Destiny Rules doc. She must have gained 30 pounds on the SYW. Now, I think she has lost about half of it. She is still no where near how thin she was in the Spring of 2003 though.

For the most part this thread is people expressing what they want Stevie to do. What songs they want to hear and why. The problem with that is Stevie needs to be motivated behind the song or it will be blah. She WANTED to do Beautiful Child so she put her all into it. She wanted to do BaTB, so it is incredibly heartfelt. She CHOSE Circle Dance and R and R for a reason. You or I may not understand her reason but it is probably important to Stevie, as evidenced in her kick ass versions. She connects with these covers she has chosen to do. Yea, we would love to hear a song she wrote but at this time in her life, she wants to do these other songs. Something about the lyrics in CD perhaps are speaking to her right now. Something about R and R puts her in a mood and she gives it her ALL. I would rather than have that than a half assed, self conscious version of TTM or BellaDonna. Stevie needs to have confidence behind her performance or it will not work. Landslide is one song that could have been tossed in because she had to drop a fast song. Maybe the pace was too fast for her and she was well rehearsed from Vegas with the three part harmony version of Landslide. Maybe she wants to do Landslide for some other reason. It has, in the past, reminded her of her Dad. Maybe the questions she was asking herself when she wrote Landslide, are the same ones she is asking herself now? (can I cope with these changes?) Who knows, maybe it was just an easy substitute. I tend to think there is more to the song being added than just a replacement due to the extensive photo montage she has scrolling behind the song. It is a complete retrospective of her life.

Sidenote...it is also sort of amazing how for years people have complained that Stevie never tries new things. She totally breaks out of her pattern and pulls all kinds of new things out of her ass in the last few months, from BaTB to IAF and HSML to Hotel California with Don to Circle Dance and a Zep cover. I guess she is not doing the "right" new things for some people but judging from her demeanor when performing her new stuff, I would say she is doing the right songs for Stevie.

Because she had a waist back then. Then as she started to get bigger, she wore layer after layer after layer and it made her look as big as a house when she wasn't. The worst thing to do when you're heavy or gaining weight is to wear lots of layers and cover yourself up.

Kelly, i kinda agree... i think she does the songs she really WANTS to do in addition to the songs the masses expect her to do... for example, she probably doesn't sing Talk To Me anymore for several reasons... i can't help but doubt it is because she "fears" performing it because she "can't hit the notes"...

If she filled her setlist this year with songs most of these people have never even heard of, people would be going "WHAT?" they want to hear the sings theyre familiar with...of course WE are familiar with them all, but most people at her shows are not

it is sad, but true...when I first fell in love with Heart I went to see a show at the House of Blues and they played like 2 or 3 Heart songs...the rest were from their other band The Lovemongers and I was like, um, hello...I didn't like it at all and haven't been to another of their shows since because I've heard they do that a lot...still love Heart and buy their CDs but don't go to shows

The worst thing to do when you're heavy or gaining weight is to wear lots of layers and cover yourself up.

I'd put that to be the second-worst thing. The worst would be a thong or Speedo. :)

Ok just read through the whole thread so here's my 2 cents...
Enchanted sucks and needs to go away permanantly. The end.

Bella Donna would have been an amazing opener during TISL! Please bring it back Stevie!

Rooms should be a staple in her set. It was one of her bigger hits and is an amazing, recognizable song loved by both the causal fan and the die hards.

I don't think she would do TTM due the the vocal challenge it presents although anything would be better than Enchanted.

I don't care what she says, I don't believe she hates any of her albums including SA. I know she has discussed the years when she did nothing creative blah blah blah. She may not have been at the top of her game but she still wrote a sh*t load of beautiful songs. Like someone else said her songs are her babies and that will never change. I don't think the reason she doesn't do SA songs live is because she hates the album. That's bull.

I'd like to know more about her being out of it for TOSOTM tour. Was anyone else witness to this? Details please. Had the effects of the klonipin kicked in during the tour?

I think she HAS pulled some great ones out of the vault over the years, I only wish she had kept HSML for this tour. Big mistake giving that one up. :(

Big time... TOSOTM tour was her worst tour ever, imo... she was like some sort of zombie on stage.. no energy, very lethargic, no life... if i were a fan who had seen the RAL tour just three earlier, I would have been convinced that Stevie had become a pod person

She was simply awful. She would just stand at the microphone, sing a song, spin slowly off stage, leaving the song to end without her, then a long pause and instrumental intro to another boring song, she would come out slowly, sing the song, repeat. It was the polar opposite of her RAL performance.

It was also the first tour where she didn't do Rhiannon. She came out for the encore, mumbled something about how we should all sing it because she was tired of it, then sang HAEWFY. The lights came up and I remember turning to the stranger next to me and saying "that's it?"

I honestly don't know but if I had to guess there were no really big hits off SA and maybe the songs that she did do live didn't come off that well in her opinion. Maybe those are not her favorite songs but I don't think she dislikes them. Maybe it was a bad time in her life and she doesn't want to go back. Heck I don't know lol.

That's surprising to me because I love the boots I have from that tour and I think she sounds really good but I wasn't there so I couldn't see how her demeanor was. I especially like the version of GDW from that tour and Rooms and Alice are amazing live! Poor Stevie if she was in fact a pod person :(

First tour I saw in person. I was in college & drove out with a college friend.
I remember that Alice cleared the seats, and Stevie's feet stayed in one place. And that her voice had changed greatly since RAL.

I think SapphireSister hit it on the nail here, especially the comment about not wanting to go back.

I would add, though, that another strong possibility is that Stevie thinks that we hate the album....sales were bad....fans didn't initially respond well to the songs when they were new....and, though I can't speak for every Enchanted tour show, here in Denver, I got an overwhelming 'WTF is this song!?' impression from the audience when she played Rose Garden. I, on the other hand, was thrilled. :o

Remember the miniskirt? :D

Yes! And she wore this cool white dress with a black duster over it and top hat. She looked good on that tour. I had just seen her on TOSOTM tour and was shocked at the difference. She was zombie like on TOSOTM.

Hahaha.

Actually a lot of the weight gain came at the end of the BTM tour. If you pull out your vegas 90 dvd you can see she was actually pretty skinny near the beginning of the tour. I thought she looked great in the skirt and it was a nice change of pace for her.

Yup.

I'd have to say '98. It's especially noticeable on the Jay Leno show appearance. She looks hot.

Omigosh, her hop bone?! :blob1: I can't wait to see her hop again! just a few more pounds, and Stevie will be hopping!!!! :]

So basically during the RAL tour she was doing lines in between songs and during TOSOTM she was taking cat naps. Interesting...

I'm changing the subject here. Back to the start...

Even if Stevie only played her singles on her solo tours...the setlist would be quite different than it is right now....ponder it...

Edge of Seventeen, Stop Dragging My Heart Around, After The Glitter Fades, Leather & Lace, Stand Back, If Anyone Falls, Nightbird, I Can't Wait, Talk To Me, Has Anyone Written..., Rooms On Fire, Long Way To Go, Whole Lotta Trouble, Two Kinds Of Love, Sometimes It's Bitch, Loves A Hard Game To Play, Maybe Love, Blue Denim, If You Ever Did Believe, Reconsider Me, Planets of the Universe, Everyday and Sorcerer. Oh, even Twisted was released as a single - that one could be thrown in too. Though I don't really care for a few of these songs, it would make a great show, assuming Stevie could sustain herself for all of these different songs.

They sure were. Funny, though, huh, because I bet they never got any radio play anywhere.....and that seems to be the way it is more often than not. Reconsider Me had a really nice picture insert, but Twisted was released without one - just the CD in a plain jewel case. Both are promos, and were not released for public sale.

Too bad Reconsider Me didn't get any airplay, that is a great song. I love it. I think it could have done fairly well if it got more airplay. I didn;t like it when I first heard it on Enchanted but I love it now. Twisted I always thought the Enchanted version sucked and I never knew that was a demo. I thought that was the actual song. When I got my first bootleg of the enchanted tour I was blown away.
