Actually, if I remember my history correctly, it was the Republican party, of which I think Lincoln was a member, that pushed for the abolition of slavery.

I think anyways...

But I could be wrong, since I spent all of my last history class quiety chanting "Get back behind your podium." My professor had what you might call man-(camel)toe. Or "camel hump" as his students referred to it. :eek:

Yes and no. Yes, it was the Republican party. OTOH, if you look at all of the "red states," most used to be staunchly "blue states." It wasn't necessarily the voting population that changed philosophically, but the Democratic party. (Reagan, Thurman, and countless other Republicans were originally Democrats.) Also, at the Civil War wasn't so much about slavery as it was about state's rights for the South and the preservation of the country for the North.
