You want me to try massaging your husband's feet once in a while? No thanks.
And I don't want to cook, clean or have sex with him either...but hey - thanks for the offer, really.
Like I said, Martinis and blowjobs. Just what God intended.

no not sex, although yes we have sex of course..but i was referring to the chores of the house..cooking, cleaning, i love my husband, i massage his feet after a long days' work..things you should try once in awhile
Well, I hope you're tickling your hubby's pickle. I know it's dirty and disgusting but it's something you must do if you want to protect the sanctity of your marriage. I recommend closing your eyes and taking a xanax to make it a bit easier.

Go out and get jobs, I know something liberals don't do very well--especially the minorities (who complain worst than the best of them) . This board is full of liberal whining. I'm a republican, YEP, proud of it. What's wrong with you guys? Of course tax breaks should go to the rich, they WORKED for their money. Social Security is for the lazy. Gays getting married? Don't even get me started. God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve ok?
I'm really interested to know where some of you Democrats get off thinking you should be allowed to burn the flag, what's wrong with you all? Have you no respect for this great land? Guess what people, Saddam Hussein bombed the world trade centers on 9/11/01 and now you want him free...I know , no-one will respond, because you dont know what to say to someone who actually stands up to you tree huggers.

Just when I think I've read the stupidest post ever, you go and post another. I suggest you hone your writing skills before applying borrowed glories as a mere typist.
Thanks for your contribution, but if I had wanted to hear from somebody with your IQ, I'd be at my local supermarket talking to the vegetables. It's truly amazing the way you never let an idea interrupt the flow of your typing, but then, making sense isn't your area of expertise, is it? If you knew what you're talking about, you'd be dangerous. As Abba Eban so aptly said: "His ignorance is encyclopedic."
If those posts wer intended as a joke, you forgot to include the punch line. I bet you thought it was just coincidence that your parents had the same surnames before they married? Maybe you wouldn't come across as such a jellyfish-sucking mental midget if you weren't afflicted with mental retardation; if your weren't so fat that you look like The Michelin Man man on steroids, or if your face wasn't the strongest form of natural contraception available. Who am I kidding? You would.
In closing, why don't you put your glasses on backwards and walk into yourself?

Ack! I find it hard to believe but I believe you all the same. I've heard of conservative ignorance but this kind of extreme combined with preaching would be admitted to an asylum here.
And it should be asylum worthy anywhere....Although I think in the South there are different standards than most civilized places of the USA or even the world. It's every day usually I see a big huge pickup truck with the civil war battle flag "the rebel flag" waving in the wind from behind, hoping in some way they can make a black person mad.
It's amazing the bigotry and ignorance that actually still exists. I'm actually a member of a southern baptist church, since I was young, although I do not attend anymore--some of this persons' comments sound familiar to me to the chit chat at the "dinner on the grounds" we used to have after church on Sundays

I am agreeing with Strand...there are a few bad apples everywhere and in the South there is a notion that most people are prejudice. I was born in Florida, and I lived in Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana and Mississippi. All of these are VERY steeped-in-tradition southern states. And yet...I can think of a time when my family could have been blatantly prejudice. I dated a beautiful African American girl in high school and we were the only interacial couple at my prom. I've always thought that perhaps the bad apples are more apparent in the SOuth because there is a stereotype that if you are from the South, you are not as intelligent as the West Coast or the Northeast. Also, in places like New York, there are so many people in such little space that it gives the appearance of a hand holding pseudo homogeneous society - it is far from that.

Interestingly, it existed even in the Communistic states of the USSR and China. I mean someone was living in those palaces while others were living 10 to a room. In the end, I guess I think it is not a de facto bad thing, but some can take it to a bad place.

But it depends everywhere doesn't it  I mean many of the black people in Harlem HATE white people to the point of that being racism. Also, the Jews and the blacks in Brooklyn HATE each other for the most part as evidenced by the hate crimes awhile back. Ignorance is bliss......Yeah, I figured that you were too strong to let those comments get to you, so I didn't think you were upset, but it was still totally unjustified and an awful for that person to say.

the same preacher that is f*ing half the congregation and getting drunk saturday night
I would say the more APPROPRIATE thing to say would be that AIDS is a consequence of living a sexually loose lifestyle. And yes Jazmen, in my case, that preacher was screwing my mother. Who in turn divorced his wife of 20+ years to marry my mother. Who also in turn, divorced my father of 20 years to marry this preacher man. F*cked up huh? True story. Wouldn't believe it if I hadn't lived it.
Oh and Jazmen, I love that pic of Stevie in your signature. She looks positively bone-able.

Depends which parts of New York. Boston used to have problems with racism (especially in the late eighties after a man killed his wife and blamed it on a mysterious black man), but not nowadays. Seattle used to be overrun by neo-Nazis, too.
I don't know, its very segregated here. The black sections of Boston, the white clubs, I hardly ever see any black people at the clubs I go to. There is still an undercurrent of racism here unfortunately.

It is quite obvious to me that rose.gypsy is actually a misguided liberal. It is the oldest trick in the world to make your opponent look ridiculous by embodying all of his/her stereotypes in the most insipid ways and pretending to believe them. He/she gets the added benefit of bringing out the worst in all of you. It disappoints me how easily some of you are manipulated. The quite effective strategy of thread hijack soon degenerated into people taking the opportunity to vent their worst hostilies on a straw man. Maybe he hasn't upset you, but he sure has made you all glory in acting ugly. And all I can do is laugh at the irony of it all being instigated by one of your like-minded individuals who obviously believes none of what he says.
Have fun with your troll.

I really don't think anyone cared too much what he/she had to say, or took any of it seriously, one way or the other.

Have fun with your troll.Oh please. I didn't do anything "ugly." I never used inappropriate language; I made lots of sarcastic remarks. It was all in fun and I'm pretty sure I didn't look bad. Had I actually gotten upset, I might have said something I would be ashamed of because I would've let my emotions take over, but I wasn't even in the mood to be upset by the drama. I'm sorry that you think you have to condescend to us.
And I wouldn't be quick to be certain that this person was a liberal. Maybe you don't, but I do encounter plenty of people in real life who would say most if not all of what that person said. Some people are really like that.

Well, first of all 'hi'! :wavey: Nothing like jumping right in to the hornet's nest, huh? Hugs to all of you I already know, and warm greetings to the rest of you! I feel as though I know most of you through reading your posts for so long, and will attempt to tone down too much unreciprocated familiarity. I have lurked off and on for years, but this board has been, shall we say, somewhat frightening in the past. Trolls...or whatever...are not what frightened me. It was the hateful, mean spirited attacks that would occur. I guess I'm posting this message here right now to tell you all that I'm impressed with how well you've handled this 'heckler'. Personally, I'd be greatly surprised if this latest incarnation is truly the serious conservative nutcase he is hoping to portray. Nutcase, though indeed. I think someone may be jealous of the popular Ledge posters and it's a sad little attempt to rile them. AND to make fun of conservatives while doing so. (Not that it isn't good sport....) However, if this poster is legit, I suggest we buy prime time air space for him/her to represent the true face of the "W"orshipers.
Anyway, this has been quite enjoyable due to proper Ledgie Troll wrangling! Thanks for the entertainment.

Perhaps the Ledge is considered "clique-y" by people. When I first came here, I wasn't treated that great. I left another board because I was treated like crap, and to come here to get treated bad made me sad. But, I overcame that and jumped in and made lots of friends. I disagree with people, but there's no need for name-calling and stuff. :distress:
I think when people feel outnumbered as some do on the Ledge, I can see the whole "mob" thing. We are all kind of protective of each other and when newbies or outsiders come around, we get defensive. Obviously, this person came to attack and stir things up, but I think it's been handled decently. :)

I think a lot of us become too comfortable talking amongst so many people that share our views (for the most part), and once someone with a differing view of things, like a conservative or Republican, a great number of people respond to them and it comes across as ganging up on them. They're outnumbered by the many liberals and Democrats on here, so it's essentially an impossible task for them to be taken seriously and they're just shrugged off as being crazy coots. I know I've done it and so have many others.
Unfortunately, a few of the conservatives who have popped up simply couldn't be taken seriously because of some of the things they've said, but the same rings true for us. The things we say are just as crazy to them as we think the things they say are. I thought David was dead-on in that thread about Bill O'Reilly where he said that everyone already agrees and disagrees about things, no back and forth is going to change that.

You're so right Christy. I would never be mean or negative towards a newbie or outsider, but I will always protect my friends first. Your thoughts, your designs, the marvellous studies you are engaged in, and all your life, bear the Divine, the heavenly stamp, seeing that they are consecrated to the rational and the beautiful -- that is, to what is eternal."

I can't imagine people being mean to you because you've always been so nice!
I could be wrong, but it seems like when people get defensive, it's justified. If a troll attacks a member by saying something really nasty, we don't take that. And of course I'm going to have something to say if someone makes homophobic comments, but those are against board guidelines, anyway. But if we're making newcomers afraid to even say what they think because they're afraid someone's going to jump down their throats, there's something wrong.

I thought David was dead-on in that thread about Bill O'Reilly where he said that everyone already agrees and disagrees about things, no back and forth is going to change that.Well, of course I appreciate being amongst like minds in the political realm and others, but I hate to think that no one with different views even wants to speak of them because there are so many radical liberals here. (We are pretty radical, right? :o )
I wish there was a way to convince someone that just because so many of us respond with the same viewpoints, that doesn't mean that we're dogging that person. It just so happens that we have the same political views, but we still want to hear about another person's and will respect them if that person is respectful as well. I don't know how we could convince anyone of that though, without just taking everything down a notch and holding our tongues all the time. The problem is that the country is so polarized right now and we're products of that, right? Everything is heated. We can't have class discussions in my history classes without someone saying something hurtful to someone else; it's like it's unavoidable.
And I guess the fact that we know each other quite well doesn't help anything. I remember when I first came to the board, I was really intimidated by all the people who already knew each other. I couldn't see what purpose I could possibly serve. Everyone else already had a place. Thankfully, I found my place and others can, too. But sometimes it's not easy and it's frustrating to be new or unknown, I think.
Now I'm just rambling, and when I point that out I guess y'all know that's my totally not eloquent way of saying that I don't know what to say anymore.

I just remember when I first started posting, I was trying to rally some support to get a FM video on MTV's TRL or something and people were all "What a stupid idea." and I just didn't get a warm welcome, but things got easier when I made friends here.
Of course, I was a little bit different back then (2001). I've learned so much from Ledgies. I didn't know much about message boards and stuff. My fandom of LB and FM brought me to cyberspace.
Ryan, I agree with you about people attacking Ledgies. It won't be tolerated. I don't think we are clique-y either, but outsiders might think so...until they become ONE OF US!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!
All newbies should feel welcome and I think we do an excellent job of that. Although, when people start posting just to get a rise out of us and attack us...we have a right to defend (without stooping to their level of name-calling) ourselves and this board.

As for the mob mentality. Of course, it's very present here. So many are too afraid to speak and often when it appears the pack has won, they don't realise how ridiculous they look to those who don't fit in.I don't want it to be like that! :distress: I imagine that you include yourself in that category and you know that I don't want you to not speak your mind! I don't know what to do about it; my long-ass post about it probably insinuated that.

I never felt a part of a clique online, And especially here...Especially considering my political views are that of an Independent who views the Republican party (Which I was a former member of) and the Democrats as near one-and-the-same...I trust neither, And I form my own thoughts/opinions of the issues without bowing down and kissing the holy rings and the asses of either party.

I don't think the problem is neccessarily us not liking Repubs. or Conservatives in general - but some who have come on here, mostly trolls, are down right hateful and mean about it - and that's when we get "gang-like" I guess.
But that, as has been stated, comes down to us protecting our own, especially when the attacks get personal.
It's hard being a newbie in any situation, I think - but recently there have been quite a few new or emerging Ledgies and I think it's great! I mean we were ALL new at one point

It disappoints me how easily some of you are manipulated. The quite effective strategy of thread hijack soon degenerated into people taking the opportunity to vent their worst hostilies on a straw man.
I'm not going to attack you, Nancy, because you have a good point. I would have never kept beating a dead horse last night, however, troll said some pretty cruel things to me. I could have been the bigger person in this instance, but it was refreshing to put this person in his/her place.
I think the ledge is very cliquey. I've been posting on the Ledge since 1998 and it was cliquey then. It will always be that way and it's really not any different from any other board out there. I don't think there's anything really wrong with that.
I really don't post much on anything other than subjects relating to FM but one time I did post that I did not like political threads in the non chit chat forums. My post was party-neutral and, yet, I was reemed for it.
I learned my lesson on that one. It wasn't so much the mean comments I received for that that bothered me, but it was the fact that nobody backed me up or replied saying that some of the comments I received were a little uncalled for. In imo, it was because people were afraid of getting flamed themselves. That's where I think the "mob" mentality comes in.

Many on here live near each other, or meet in person alot. So that's mainly why they seem to know each other more. I have been on here awhile and don't REALLY know alot of people on here beyond a certain point. I agree Chris, I'm sad at how this thread has turned so serious.
A troll came to the board to cause trouble and people either ignored him/her or kept things light, I didn't see any nasty behaviour going on.
As for the clique thing or gang mentality, of course it's present. I felt it to an extent when I first joined, but you just have to dive in and take part. God, remember Burnish? Great site but that board was one big clique that didn't want to know anyone else.
There are definitely lots of fights, arguments and discussions here, it's what keeps things lively, but I don't think anyone actively sets out to be hurtful or exclude anyone.

And the attacks on Josh and Maria were below the belt.

I think that there's a major difference between disagreeing and being intolerant.
rose.gypsy (or whatever the hell the troll called itself) was so obviously trying to egg us on. But truly, if she/he/it had come on as a new member and simply expressed some differeing opinions, and not tried to preach and jam his/her/its beliefs down our throats, it would have been a different scene. I think it's fair to say that the majority of us are liberal minded, and tolerant and accepting. I would say, this is a good thing. I don't think any of us spends much time on fundamentalist sites trying to jam our liberal viewpoints down their throats. THAT alone is why so many people reacted to him/her/it. The troll didn't come here as a fan of the band and find that it disagreed with the majority of views here; it came simply to antagonize and provoke. I would doubt that rose.gypsy (or whatever) could ever name 10 songs by Stevie, Lindsey, or FM.
A) this is a Fleetwood Mac (and all its related members) fan site. If someone is not a fan of the band or any of its members, why the hell would you come here? Anyone who joins simply to pan the band and its members is a sad, lonely person who has nothing better to do. Honestly, I've never visited any other fan site in my life. Why would I? To run down its members? Please, i have far better things to do. Like talk about the band I do love with with great bunch of people! Or go out with my friends.
B) people may describe this board as "cliquish" - but hey, man, if this is the liberal, tolerant, pro-choice, pro-gay/lesbian clique, I'm happy to call myself a member. Also, again, I do not believe any of us try to jam our political leanings down other people's throats. I think it's part of being tolerant of others. I know there are people on this board who are anti-choice. I'd venture to say, I could sit down and have a reasonable conversation with most of them about it. But if that person simply said to me, you and all the women in the world who've had abortions are going to burn in hell, I'd be less inclined to chat. Ya know?
Not sure where I'm going with all this... these were just random thoughts i had as I read.
Not to mention that this troll is clearly a very sad and disturbed person, who has nothing better to do in life than troll sites and provoke conflict. Did he/her/it make even a tiny blip on my radar screen? No. Did he/her/it compel me to rethink my personal philosophies and views? Ya gotta be kidding. He/her/it did entertain me for a while - and then it made me feel a strong sense of pity.

Oh God, did I just waste an hour of my life reading 27 pages of this?
All I have to say is that it is insane to come on here and post all this ****, mocking people with the "Adam and Steve" comment, etc. You are telling us to get jobs, etc. Well you really need to practice what you preach because you are the one that came in here and posted this stuff just to stir up the pot. We are on here because we are obsessed with Fleetwood Mac... why are you on this board?
And as far as the Ledge being intimidating or cliquish, I guess I haven't noticed. I do remember when I first joined I got in huge fights with Dissention daily and was offended by every off color remark about Stevie, but I got over it fast. Now I am really comfortable on the Ledge, even if I still feel like an outcast sometimes.
Anyway, Gypsy.Rose, you really shouldn't be concerned with oother people so much. What would Jesus do? Would he love people uncoonditionally or would he judge people the way you are doing? Food for thought, huh? :)

I'm sorry to sound rude, but you just seem to come around to close threads. I don't get it. :shrug:It's rather bizarre, ain't it?
How can someone moderate a message board without keeping pretty current on reading it? In order to moderate properly, you would need to know the personalities & styles of the people who use the board as well as have a strong feel for the overall atmosphere -- the give & take that the regs engage in -- so that you would know what they're serious about & what they're just joking about. You'd also need to be able to recognize one-time-pop-in trolls from the regs. You need to engage in fairly frequent conversation on the board, too, so that the rest of the board comes to know you.
I don't know how janet can do any of that. In fact, I don't think she can. To just show up every four or six months in order to wag a finger & close a thread is sort of ... goofy? at best, pointless?

I honestly don't have time to post very much. I work alot and I am never home.
I don't have time to post for fun. Then why moderate? People here don't really know you, & you don't really know many of them.
The salary couldn't be that good. . . are there other perks?

The writing style doesn't seem that similar to me. This person has either been lurking for a while or is a regular who is posting under a pseudonym to yank our chain.

This is all she has time for and I respect that. But I think it would far more effective if there were a moderator specifically for the Chit Chat forum who would be present fairly often. Actually, two or three others might do the trick, since so much goes on here. Michael suggested this down there on The Ledge board (one of the board's no one ever looks at) and I think he has a good idea.
Janet, if you happen to see my response, please know that it's not to criticize you. I know that you do what you can. I know how it is to have responsibilities that don't allow you time to participate or even check a message board frequently.

I know you are very sensitive about ppl being rude to homosexuals. I love you for that...someone has to be. If not, we would be further back than we are now. :xoxo:
For me, though, I name call and make fun of heterosexuals all the time. Of course they are not the minority, but I think that if I bash them and their lifestyle, then I have no right to get upset and angry when they bash mine. That's where I am coming from. I don't want "special treatment" on this board because I am gay cuz we all know I make fun of straight ppl all the time.I didn't realize you made fun of heterosexuals. Unless you were just playing around a few times and meant nothing by it. I can't see making fun of any group's "lifestyle," anyway, since heterosexuals as a whole don't have a specific lifestyle and neither do homosexuals or bisexuals. I didn't think anyone is asking for "special treatment"--only equal treatment and the benefit of not having to be singled out as some horribly sinful menace to society. I don't want any sexual orientation to be perceived that way. I'm sure you feel the same way and I can't imagine you seriously bashing heterosexuals as a group, so I'm thinking that you have every right to be just as annoyed, upset, offended, or whatever when homosexuals are bashed.

But just to let you, Janet, and all the mods know - I really appreciate what you do for the board - :D Thanks!!!

I do see your point.
I just think that if we wanted to be taken seriously as a group, we have to act professional. We do build up the stereotype of those who can't stay with one partner...that spread disease (which I disagree with, BTW), who are flaming "queers". I mean...look at these PRIDE events. I really believe they could raise awareness and actually educate society. But no. It's just a bunch of men in daisy dukes and leather thongs prancing around the street carrying a flag. I think before we can point the finger of those who bash us, we have to fix the preception we give off. We can't change other ppl's mind without changing our own first.

We can't change other ppl's mind without changing our own first.I'm not responsible for any of that behavior and have thus far lived my life under a relatively strict moral code, especially in regards to sexual behavior, so I have no reason to think that I deserve to be bashed at all and have no problems protesting bashing of homosexuals. I know that you are not some fiendish sex-crazed depraved person either, Curtis, so you don't deserve it any more than I do. The few who do behave reprehensibly, have no sense of sexual/moral responsibility whatsoever (and I know that that is a relative and subjective concept), and do nothing but make our minority group look bad are not the sole representatives of us. I'm pretty sure that I am not perceived as morally bankrupt by anyone other than those who think to be gay is to be morally bankrupt automatically. And I know I'm not the only one.
But it's not just homosexuals. Heterosexuals have many members of their majority group that behave irresponsibly and have no concept of monogamy--that's not exclusive to one sexual orientation. No group is immune to that.
I hope I'm making sense, 'cause I feel like only part of what I mean to say if actually coming through.

She's a good lady, I'm sure most of us would agree. that's not what's at issue.
To say she "DOES check in" doesn't mean much, of course, unless you relate it to the habits of others or unless you quantify it somehow. Ann Sissom "checks in" too -- probably about once a month or less. Amber "checks in" -- about ... what? six hours per day?
We just about all of us "check in." Do you see what I"m saying?
Being a moderator can't be all that much fun a lot of the time - but it's her job to check on things and close threads etc if neccessary.Moderating doesn't look like much fun, true. I would think the first job of a moderator is to mix with the people being moderated. As I stated earlier, how can you know what's really going on unless you observe it? Being notified of a problem & then going to try cram in a rapid thread reading invariably creates a mountain out of a molehill because you just don't get the vibe of the problem. Every problem has a vibe: it's not a black & white issue. It's got all that gray. Take the thread in question: started by a troll, developed into a confusing mixture of joking around & not joking around, some people feeling offended & others not really being aware of or understanding why, plus the inevitable off-topic stuff that makes reading any lengthy thread doubly time-consuming & confusing.
How can you moderate people you don't really know? You get to know people here by having conversations with them. It's a question of quantity: the more weeks & months you spend debating & joking & fighting with people on the message board, the better you get to know them, & they you. There's no shortcut & no bypass.
Johnny Stew's a perfect example of being in the best position to moderate: he actually hangs here on a regular basis, & as a result he knows all of us, & we all know him. He knows our styles, he knows our personalities, he knows our moods, he knows when Ledgie X is just venting or pushing the envelope or totally putting on or seriously being nasty, & so he's able to act accordingly. He doesn't just arrive at a problem thread when someone notifies him, crams in a quick reading & then try to solve the situation in a way in which the solution is a perfect counterbalance to the problem.
Whoever said (probably as a reductio ad absurdum of my position) that it's impossible to "read every post" is just being ridiculous. Of course it's impossible to read every post -- who the hell would want to? You don't need to read every post in order to have a good solid feel for this place & its dynamics. You do need to spend a fair amount of time here (you do that because you enjoy hanging out & conversing -- that's why we're all here, isn't it?) so you can much more easily appraise problems brewing & so that you're a part of the community. That's why they have police departments in every big city: the cops know their beat & its people.
Janet herself says she is too busy with work to read this board more than very rarely. That's fine -- nobody's slamming her for that. But I'm just wondering why anyone would want to continue moderating a board when he or she is too busy to enjoy it? Wouldn't the responsibility of moderating be just one more pointless thing to have to worry about? Who would want that? & why? Wouldn't it feel better to just pass it on?

That's a load of ****.
Yes, there are sexy men in pride parades. However, the majority of the participants are groups like the Gay Men's Chorus, PFLAG, Shanti, local council members, representative of government bodies and local celebrities. There's absolutely nothing wrong with people flaunting their sexuality. Heterosexuals do it all day and no one seems to be concerned about whether or not they appear "professional" or what perception they are giving off.
People who choose to gay bash or be homophobic have a problem. And the problem has nothing to do with what the gay community does or doesn't do. Their problem has to do with their fear and ignorance. The gay community is not responsible for the acts of gay bashing and I'm not going to "tone it down" to accommodate some ****ing bigot's ****ed up perception of who I am.

Kelly :)
PS: Sorry, I wrote this before I read Nancy's post. I mean no disrespect to Nancy. It's interesting to see two totally different viewpoints, though. I believe as she does that the 'poster' is actually not a conservative...but the fact that it shines an unflattering (okay..try *ignorant*) light on conservatives does not bother me in the least. If I were a Republican (sorry, but that was hard to type)...and especially if I honestly believed ...not just spewing arrogant hype...I can see where this would have been hurtful and offensive. I wouldn't have liked to read posts by a conservative pretending to be a liberal endorsing sexual freedom for pedophyles....or such nonsense. See what I mean? Well, yeah, what an introduction for myself. A wee tad bit more intense than I'd intended. :sorry:

Hey Mary, :wavey:
I agree that the viewpoints of this poster are those of many right wingers....but I really feel if you read all the posts, you'll see why I believe this person is not one of them. I live smack dab in the middle of red small town, red state, middle America. I know the real thing and honestly, the real thing is a lot more frightening that that thing was. This was obvious goading. If the person were for real, they'd have tried harder to "save" everyone from their evils and would have had LOTS more to say! Don't you think it was odd that this person was a 'church secretary'...and even named the church? And mentioned 'wifely duties? All blatant buttons. So many more, but those were off the top of my head. But hey, I have 5 kids, so I guess I do enjoy me some 'wifely duties'! (Of course since I'm not a conservative, my hubby enjoys them too!)
Actually, I don't particularly care for 'radical' viewpoints on *either* side. In fact, I used to joke that the only thing that could turn me Republican was a left-wing radical! I know they serve their purpose, and middle of the road people like me tend to piss people off on both sides, but the fact remains that people like me are raising open minded, respectful children; responsible, with a good sense of community spirit. There is no place for 'radical' in my life and I wouldn't want it even if there were. So we middle of the road-ers have our place...and I think it's as important as those of you who are out there changing the world hands on.

I wish I knew what to say here. Though I've been lurking periodically for a very long time, I don't recognize the undercurrent of this situation. I feel compassion for you and the decision you chose to make. I know it couldn't have been easy...and I also know you intended the best. I'm sorry for your emotional pain, and I hope it eases for you.
Kelly :)

No need to be sorry and there is NO pain.
My feelings are just hurt, but it will end. It's right I step down and I understand the ill feelings some had.
I just wanted to make it known it's only been very recently I haven't been posting and I don't just come around to close threads, that's all:) I never wanted to be someone who was looked at as a downer!
This also isn't a grab for attention. I have checked this thread like 3 times tonight and I am afraid that I look like I just wanted sympathy or to be told I do a great job, no. I have done a poor job and the person I want to take my place IS johnny stew because he posts ALOT more than I do and probably has more time. I only have time at like 4 AM and usually no one else is on.
I DO want to say, nothing is done unless I get some feedback from everyone, especially him. I never closed a thread without asking other members and him. I never wanted to just close it for my own satisfaction or fear.
I just came on here because I really thought 28 pages of arguing is probably excessive and I just ASKED if the thread should be closed. I learned after that that JS totally took care of things really quickly.
I only wanted to say my peace.

I guess most of you will be happy to know I stepped down. I guess since 1997 I have been on here, but no, I know no one. I have felt very out of the loop with the Ledge and with the world really and I have no business being here.
I usually looked on here and posted alot, as you can see, I do post, I don't have like 50 posts, I have way over 2000. So I didn't come on here every " 6 months" and wag a finger.
I was actually defending the people on here who are gay. I am not gay but I HATE gay bashing. I came on here because "flaming liberals' in ittself looked horribly wrong and it UPSET me. People cared enough to email me privately, which is what usually happens with EACH post I have closed ( and since 2000 I think I have closed like 5 or 6).
But the morale here has totally knocked me down and I am stepping down.
I really don't want you to feel that way, Janet. I was thinking that the administrators should give you some help because so much goes on in this forum that it's too much for one person. I never meant to insinuate that you should throw in the towel. I wasn't "happy" to read that you had stepped down. And it's so untrue that you have "no business being here." On the basis of what? You've been here a long time and everyone who hasn't broken rules repeatedly is welcome here, anyway.
I really do appreciate that you have a big problem with all the gay bashing. There aren't enough people who feel that way and it's not out of necessity because they are gay. That doesn't go unappreciated.
This also isn't a grab for attention. I have checked this thread like 3 times tonight and I am afraid that I look like I just wanted sympathy or to be told I do a great job, no.I understand, but I couldn't let that go without saying something, not because I'm haughty enough to think that you would ever need my sympathy but because I thought this needed to be said.
My feelings are just hurt, but it will end.I really am sorry about that. Like pretty much any debate on the internet, this was not something worth hurting someone's feelings over.

Hey Kelly, Im glad there are mom's like you that are raising kids with open minds and common sense! I try to do the same, but I throw in tree hugging, women's rights, and children's issues as well :)
I know that people on the right fringe say things that are far worse than this poster did, but I tell you: NO liberal I know would even bother to rile up this many fellow liberals just for ****s and giggles....no, I must respectfully disagree....even if the poster didnt say things as bad as you've heard in your red town/red state, I myself attribute that to either young age or true ignorance of the entire right wing radical agenda. This person with a small mind probably lives in a small town and hasnt bothered to look at the bigger right wing agenda, therefore isnt as dangerous (so to speak)
I restricted myself to one reply as you know, and even that was tongue in cheek :] As for being a Moderate, me Saintly Mother always told me:

You know what the saddest thing about this is? This thread was started by a loser troll. Personally, I think it's wrong that it has come to this.
I also have to say that I think the "real" Ledgies were handling this thread just fine. I didn't think it needed to be closed. Everyone was fully aware there was a loser troll in our midst. Some people were having fun with it, some were taking it on. As we can all see, it didn't last long. It came, it stirred up sh*t, it crawled back under its rock. I'm not saying that what it was spewing forth was in any way right or justified, but there wasn't a single Ledgie who didn't see it for what it was. And there wasn't a single Ledgie (that I saw, and correct me if I'm wrong) who joined the troll in its diatribe.
Anyway, Janet, I think it's very sad that this was the outcome of this thread. In my opinion, it's made the troll the winner.

It's rather bizarre, ain't it?
Well, I can't speak for Janet here, but it's been my experience that finding a moderator who 1) is willing to actively engage in the board and 2) is a non-controversial figure is VERY, VERY hard. You can't just pick anyone, and the people who you usually want most to do it don't have the time and/or the inclination. So we're stuck with what we can get.
It's not fun to be a moderator. People resent you. And if you have any kind of a personality at all, you'll make enemies who will think you're abusing your power, which causes more trouble and misery all around. It's the nature of the beast: if you post a lot, you're bound to have stepped on some toes. Then it becomes about personality rather than about the issue at hand. Who would want to do that, to open themselves up to such hostility? Johnny Stew is a perfect example. With all his tact, he's still sniffed at, derided, and bad-mouthed behind closed doors by people who think he was too heavy-handed with them.
But at least Janet does swoop in occasionally. Look at the other forums - Barbara posts like six days out of the year! And when she does post, it's about how we all should check out the website of ANTOHER moderator who rarely posts (but admittedly Les is comparatively active for a moderator - I see her around maybe once every six weeks or so). When fights break out on the Lindsey forum, Johnny Stew has to come over. In fact he does almost everything on this board with 2000 members. It's unfair to him and perhaps someone should step up and volunteer to help rather than criticizing.
Janet

So having 2300 plus posts is just me swooping in? It's less than some of you but I have posted quite a bit. Again, just RECENTLY I haven't been around.
And plus, don't most of you think if I really KNEW all of you, I could remain objective about things? Being a semi stranger ( not to the boards, but to each of you) let's me just be able to look at things without making judgement calls.
AND-for the last time, PEOPLE emailed me with this thread. I didn't go looking for something to do. People were concerned. Never, ever did I just look at a thread and close it. I usually get an email, I read it myself, I post something and ask Johnny Stew what he thinks( fairly, he is the only moderator around, the others are usually not as much). THAT's how it's done.

Sorry, maybe "swooping in" was a poor choice of words. I actually was trying to defend you but it might have come out wrong. You are by far more dilligent than all the other moderators combined except for Johnny Stew. Vianna and Mario do their share of posting but not much conflict management (although in Mario's case it's probably never necessary). At least you take your job seriously enough to make an effort at keeping the peace, and do come in when you're needed instead of shrugging it off because you don't really have time to read the boards anymore. I looked at your posting history and you do post more than I originally thought - I just hadn't visited a lot of the threads you posted in. So I apologize - you do more than "swoop in."

Janet, I'm sorry this thread made you feel bad. I haven't read through it just because I knew it would offend me by its title. I have read select posts though and some haven't been pretty. I even replied to this poster telling him/her to go to hell. I don't know why we take the bait from trolls here but sometimes we do. I guess just because we cannot let what is said, when it is so inflammatory, go.
Personally I don't mind the way you moderate. I don't like feeling that everything is being watched as though we were children. I've never felt that way here and would resent it if moderation began to get more nit picky.
Also, I'm not sure why you are so disconnected from the world but that makes me sad and I hope you can reconnect ASAP. Take care.

Well Good Lord, of course you feel disassociated with most of the people on here. Most of us don't truly know one another...we're all chatters in a forum basically. Many of us have been on here for years...I myself started reading this forum back in early 2000 and joined with TISL came out.
I wouldn't say I feel "close" to anyone here. I would love to meet a lot of the people that regularly post...and I'll back some of you up if someone is undeservingly dogging ya...but don't expect me to cry over anyone.

Oh I read these posts and some of you know each other really well and that is really cool. This board is really cool. I just love how some of you are so funny and get along etc. If you look at the scheme of things, there are NEVER problems which is why I don't feel like I need to watch things closely.
BUT if someone emails me, it just takes one person, I will look. I don't want people, esp those who post alot and are around alot, to feel that they are uncomfortable.
I just am trying to defend myself in a way so I can still post here and not feel that you all think I just came in, closed threads and said *uck you all. It was NEVER like that.

I tried to make clear my curiosity as to why anyone would want to moderate a board that he or she didn't have time to play around with anymore. It would seem like an unnecessary burden at that point.

I believe an open mind is absolutely essential, and that every situation deserves to be evaluated based solely upon its own individual merit. I have little tolerance for judgmental folks and possibly that is why I see this particular poster as a phony….which regardless of whether or not he agreed with the crap he was spewing, I think we both agree he was a ‘phony’. I also don’t see how to classify an entire sect of people (ie: liberals) as having the same personality, because I simply see this person’s trolling as being reflective of a bad personality and no ‘life’. Even some liberals fit into that category. ;) ;) And I think he was trying to get a reaction out of Ledgies…not so much ‘liberals’….he just knew what buttons to push.
Although of course I have no way of knowing that, and could easily be wrong. That’s just how I see it. Though I hadn’t considered that the poster might be young and too immature to write anything better. Regardless, they were probably not being honest, as I don’t for a minute believe this person was a church secretary….or even necessarily female. It does sound a lot like Cayla from days of ole, though doesn’t it? But then I never believed ‘she’ was for real either…just a troll who enjoyed causing trouble. “She” hated Jews, Catholics, Gays, democrats, working mothers, anyone who had sex outside marriage, and pretty much anyone who wasn’t a Baptist Republican. She also had too many inconsistencies in her stories for me to believe. But it was entertaining for a time. ;) Maybe I’m being naïve, but honestly, it’s better for the blood pressure if you take these things with humor. We won’t change the ‘hard core’ anyway, soo…

I'm sorry for the whole other situation here. I feel quite uncomfortable about it... almost like I should probably pretend I'm not hearing someone else's private conversation. But all the same I feel it is impolite not to mention it at all. I'm sorry that anyone ever felt offended enough to report this particular thread in the first place, since I thought the long time Ledgies had usurped control anyway. I know I would never want to be in the position of moderating any board....especially one of this magnitude. As a moderator you are in a lose/lose situation, sort of like an umpire. No matter what you do, you'll piss someone off. I feel for you Janet, and all moderators. And when it all boils down, we are all here because we love the Mac...right? That alone gives us a common denominator that holds us up above the general population!
