could it beeeee that it was all sooooooooooooooooooo simple then . . . :)Matters are not helped by Barbra Streisand's performance. Sydney Pollack, the director, has tried to tone down her brashness & shrillness, but has hardly made a dent in that basic pugnacious charmlessness that is beyond redemption. The difficulty is that even when Miss Streisand labors to appear sensitive & vulnerable, she cannot conquer our impression that, were she to collide with a Mack truck, it is the truck that would drop dead. And, as always, I am repelled by her looks; by the receding brow & the overcompensatory nose, which, unlike Cleopatra's in Pascal's famous dictum, would not, even if it were shorter, change the face of the earth -- merely blot out a smaller part of it.

Hew missed the point, which was KKKKattie could not overcome these very faults, though she tried in an effort to make her realtionship with Hubble work, which failed. Interestingly and IMO brilliantly, though still a politicla advocate, when she interacts with Hubble in the last scene, KKKAtie was finally subdued, but not enough and in anyu event it was too late, which I think was the point of the story.

I've never seen this movie. I hear I ruined it anyway because I've seen the last scene, so there's no point in seeing the rest. Same with Scarface.

never seen scarface, but TWWW does NOT suck. as much as I love it, I have to admit it has some scenes that tend to weaken the story, but it is a great movie and I don't think by seeing the ending you've necessarily ruined it for yourself. to me, that's not the best scene anyway...maybe the most emotional, but not the best. you should give it a viewing.

I was bored to tears watching Scarface. Babs is too obnoxious onscreen for me to really like any of her movies (though Yentl sure is campy fun). The Prince of Tides, oy. And I thought the gauze shots of Cybill on Moonlighting were too frequent! Ha!

I am not a biog fan of her later movies, but I LOVED What's Up Doc. and that ilk. As for TWWW - I thought she was good in it because she was playing a brassy broad, a roll not far from her real life.
As for Scarface - I cannot really watch movies like that because the violence gets to me. But, AP was brilliant in it - "ya womb is soooo pahluted ya can't have children"

What's pathetic is.... I used to think The Prince of Tides was a great movie. AI YI YI !!!!! What was I thinking?!?!?!?!? It's unwatchable now- I can't see any of the scenery because Barbra's head is so huge it occupies the entire screen. And, nice try Jason Gould ** NOT ** - homos can't play football.
There are only two good Streisand movies- What's Up Doc? (one of the best movies of all time IMO) and Nuts (yeah, she was over the top and "acting", but I still like it). Otherwise, you can chuck her movie career in the dumper.
Funny Girl, Hello Dolly, On A Clear Day, Up The Sandbox  , A Star is Born (ironic), The Main Event   The Mirror Has Two Faces- the list goes on and on, all stinkers.
Even though she played herself in Meet the Fockers, it wasn't so bad.

like musical tastes, everyone will differ. I, for one, love Funny Girl, On A Clear Day and Mirror...Nuts and Yentl are both great as well.
One of Barbra's best, though, is For Pete's Sake. Not very well known.

Nuts is the only one I like, and it gets picked on all the time. I thought she deserved an Oscar nomination for it.

Yeah, if they had one for overacting. She most definitely would have won (and Dreyfuss, too, for that matter, but he always overacts everything). The whole notion of her even playing a hooker was laughable and hard to swallow. Good flick, though.

I don't think she overacted at all and I can't picture anyone else in this role.

It would have been preferable to the milksop she played always longing for undiscovered sweetness, yadda, yadda, yadda.... OY!! Just bang Avigdor and get it over with. Mandy Patinkin was hot back then- I know I would been allllllll over him in a heartbeat.

I've heard he's got quite the Napoleon complex. If it weren't for him, The Goodbye Girl would be perfection, but alas, he ruins it. Marsha Mason deserved better, dammit.

Oh I am unsure about that - his portrayal at least - I mean "Now is the winter of our discontent" with a swish  come one - you didn't even laugh a little at that
But, I also am not too enthralled with him, though I liked him in Close Encounters.
