I found this all 70s station via satellite and I never realized how cool the 70s music was! Tonight, they played the coolest jam:
Gold – John Stewart with Stevie – 79
Wam Bam Shang-A-Lang – Silver - 76
Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You – Sugarloaf – 75
I’m Not In Love – 10cc – 79
Dreams – FM – 77
Year of the Cat – Al Stewart – 77
My Sharona – The Knack - 79
American Woman - The Guess Who - 70
They give you the artists and the years, too. Anyone heard these songs? Other than Dreams of course  They play some dorky stuff too, but a lot of it is totally cool.

Of course. But then, I always have listened to classic rock stations. Mostly. Wow, I haven't heard Year of the Cat in a long time, though, would like to hear that one again...

I'm not that familiar with 70s music I guess, but right now they're playing Strawberry Letter 23, Brothers Johnson, 77. How cool! The song rocks

And most of us had NO CLUE we would STILL be hearing the stuff on the radio today. My circle of friends felt most of that stuff was ... highly disposable. When we hung out together we listened to Led Zepplin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Creedence Clearwater and Pink Floyd. When I was alone with my transistor, I listened to the stuff you listed. I refer to it as "AM pop." Those days there were still a lot of AM stations that played songs like Green Eyed Lady and The Night Chicago Died. Well they make good Karaoke songs.

I always thought Funkytown by Lipps Inc was weird, but that one ended up getting remade/reissued/rehashed. UGH!!! How about Disco Duck (aka Disco Sucks) and Kung Fu Fighting?! Yes, there were some strange songs back then... Fly Robin Fly by the Silver Convention ... didn't have very many lyrics. 6 words to be exact. Lots of instrumentals... thanks to disco. Aahhh but it was fun to wear those skin tight bodysuits with spaghetti straps and those flowing skirts and platform shoes, twirling around the dance floor... in the gymnasium, of course. :D (edit: Stevie wasn't the only one doing it, she was more or less a sign of her times... but ya'll knew that already.)
But I digress, there were TONS of great rock and roll songs during this time period. I attribute it to the widespread use of Hashish and Thai Stick.

You thought funkytown was weird? I love that song! Perhaps some of it seems more normal to me cause I grew up directly with it. But, yeah, actually, Kung Fu fighting and Disco Duck are pretty strange. I agree about skintight bodysuits with spaghetti straps. Wholeheartedly.
There were tons of great rock songs - mostly what I hear on the radio are those. But I rarely hear the more unusual songs, or the not strictly rock songs, which is what the radio station he found made me crave.... All hail hashish and Thai Stick!!!!!

What about this song: "Yellow River" by Lobo
Yellow river yellow river
Is in my mind and in my eyes
Yellow river yellow river
Is in my blood it's the place I love
Got no time for explanation got no time to lose
Tomorrow night you'll find me
Sleeping underneath the moon at yellow river
Bad part is, right about the time this song was on the radio there were these joke kind of things going around... song titles and their artists. One of them was "Yellow River" by I.P. Freely. Now go back and read the lyrics. EEEWWW!

It was a LOT of FUN growing up in the 70s!! Oh Yes it Was... and there was no such thing as HIV. It was Peace, Love and DOPE. Like Stevie said... you had to be there to understand what it was like.
Sesly, I can't help but wonder what I could have accomplished if I hadn't "WASTED" so much time and paid more attention to my studies.

Well, "Gold" and "Year of the Cat" (because it's on a compilation I have), and who HASN'T heard "My Sharona" or "American Woman?"
Regarding the Guess Who, I've actually seen them twice, once in Columbus, OH and once in Windsor, Ontario (on the Fourth of July no less!). They're my favorite Canadian band. Incidentally, their guitarist was Randy Bachman, who went on to for Bachman-Turner Overdrive who had hits with "Takin' Care Of Business" and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet."

Nah, I think Yellow River was a place. Whoever wrote the song musta liked it. Hippies love nature. Some songs were about places they didn't like ... "Oh Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again." That's the cool thing about those songs... they are a bit light-hearted and simple minded in comparison to something like "Eight Mile" or "187 on the undercover cop." Sigh... if we could only warp ourselves back on the Holodeck.

I'd love to warp back, try some of that Thai Stick, listen to AM pop all day, be a total hippie, experience free love and catch a bunch of FM shows. Seeing Stevie back then would be unfrickinbelievable
Yeah, these songs are very light-hearted. I heard three more I totally dug.
You Could Have Been A Lady, April Wine, 72
Ballroom Blitz – Sweet, 75
Chevy Van, Sammy Johns, 75

Okay, I almost hate to admit this, but for Christmas last year, I bought myself two box sets of 70s music. So my previous post about box sets wasn't exactly a joke. :D Here are some titles:

One Toke Over the Line - Brewer and Shipley
Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling - The Fortunes
Treat Her Like a Lady - Corneilius Brothers and Sister Rose
Have You Seen Her - The Chi-Lites

Don't know the exact years for these:

So Into You - Atlanta Rhythm Section
Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur
Fox on the Run - Sweet

Todd is cool. You know about him and Bebe Buell and Liv Tyler, right? Not to be Tabloid-ish or anything.
I got my box sets at Wally World (aka Wal-Mart) - don't know if they normally carry stuff like that or if it was one of those Christmas type things where everything was in a box set just-in-time-for-gift-giving.

I graduated 76, so I am VERY familiar with that music.....MY music of choice was KISS, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, CCR, any and ALL southern rock....Personally, I think music went downhill as soon as rap entered the picture, which is why you hear a lot of artists doing covers of all the older stuff, even "Sounds of Silence" which is a shocker! I remember "pop" music, and I like most of it, but you can keep your ABBA thank you very much!! :xoxo:

Magnet and Steel should have been on that list! and Sister Golden Hair, and Horse with no name.........
Do you remember Amos Moses? Or Guitarzan? or Gidget the Midget? or When you're hot, you're hot? Im sure you'll recall The Streak! that was huge! (why? I dont know!) we had some fun times!
I remember tailgate parties after work with bongs and booze and cops left us alone. I remember the first (and last) time I got high, I had all the classic symptoms (couldnt shut up, nauseous, muchies, I was a mess!!)

I'm the only person I know who likes Free's "All Right Now." Christina Aguilera used to do this ass-kicking cover of it at her concerts. When I saw her in 2000, it was the only song she got into at all at her own show, except for "At Last." All of her own material that she was forced to do by the record label sucked to her, so she hardly even tried with it. This made for kind of a ****ty concert, but, uh, the point is that she totally brought "All Right Now" to life. It's a really fun song.

Okay, I almost hate to admit this, but for Christmas last year, I bought myself two box sets of 70s music.
I usually don't buy box sets of various artists because you always end up with crap you don't want. (I did buy a two cd Disco set, though).
I love '60s and '70s rock! I used to listen to classic rock radio all the time, but I don't anymore because a) commercials suck b) they've started playing '80s rock which makes me feel old and c) my stereo has a 60 disc changer so when I put it on shuffle its like I have my own radio station that plays only songs I like.
I have over 400 cds, and much of it is classic rock, classic pop, and folk. Have stuff from Aerosmith, Beach Boys, Beatles, Chuck Berry, Lindsey Buckingham (of course), The Byrds, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Phil Collins ( :p ), Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jim Croce, The Doobie Brothers, The Doors, The Eagles, Walter Egan (of course), The Everly Brothers, Fleetwood Mac (duh), Foreigner, Glenn Frey, Genesis, Heart, Jimi Hendrix, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Elton John, The Kingston Trio, Danny Kirwan, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Mamas and the Papas, Paul McCartney, Christine McVie, The Moody Blues, Stevie Nicks, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty (of course), Elvis, the Pretenders, Queen, Marty Robins, Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Sly and the Family Stone, Ringo Starr, Steppenwolf, Cat Stevens, John Stewart, Rod Stewart, Supertramp, George Thorogood, Three Dog Night, Traveling Wilburys, Joe Walsh, War, Bob Welch, Barry White, Brian Wilson, Betty Wright, and Warren Zevon.

Another "oldie" checking in ('78 graduate)...thank you all for the trip down memory lane! As I was reading all those song titles, the lyrics were buzzing by in my head (which is incredible since I burned sooooo much gray matter back then! ). And the hash and thai stick.....ahhhhh, to be 18 again (just for a little while).....

has a 70s station, and right now they are playing the top 70 albums of the 70s. Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac was the #45 album, and they played Over My Head, Say You Love Me, and Monday Morning. The countdown is currently at #9 with Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell. Rumours should be coming up, I would hope #1.
The 70s music will never die as long as I'm around. Great stuff.

Okay, now I'm curious... how old are you?
Laura
What about Todd and Bebe Buell and Liv Tyler? I must be living under a rock! I'm not even that young and technically am a 70's child, but was too young to remember any of it or enjoy it. I'm 27. I never really listened to classic rock or oldies stations before now, but went through phases of metal and punk during my rebellious years. Then, I discovered FM and Stevie and one or the other has been is my cd player since. I really don't know why my tastes at the time allowed her to be included at all, but there was something about her that just moved me in a way that no other artist had done up to that point. But most of this 70s music has totally eluded me. I'm digging on it now  I've got it on today and heard Brother Louie by the Stories. Cool tune! Also, heard one from the Raspberries called Go All The Way and it's now on my list :D One thing, though. Who told John Travolta he could sing? Gawd!!! Stick to acting, John. Or, dancing..

:xoxo:
I agree with you, Laura, I have no use for (C)RAP) music.
Southern Rock.... YAY! Black Oak Arkansas, Skyndard, Allman Bros.. When (c)rap first came out, we all figured it would be gone in less than 10 years, like disco. But no. When my local dance club quit playing New Wave Favorites in favor of hip plop. I stopped going. And life, as I knew it, ended.
It's sad. But I'm glad so many of the old bands are touring and making albums. I've gone to more concerts in the last several years than I ever did during high school... cuz it's MY MONEY. :D
Oh... and that comment about me retiring and listening to ABBA. Now that WAS a joke. I can't stand Abba. There are two people I know who like Abba, my mother and some dweeb at work. Ew. :distress:

Amazing story on how you became a SN FM fan! I'm convinced that many times the "aura" of Stevie PICKS her fans, they don't pick her. My daughter is 26. I took her to Vegas and was hoping Stevie's aura would pick her too, but it didn't  I'm glad I never heard John Travolta sing, must be like Eddie Murphy singing (insert barfing smiley here.)
Bebe Buell was a famous rock groupie who did her thang during the mid to late seventies. She had two kids with Steven Tyler, one of them is Liv, tho I don't think she had his last name at the time. Anyway, Bebe hooked up with Todd shortly thereafter and they stayed together raising the two girls. The girls always thought Todd was their dad until many years later Liv went to an Aerosmith concert and she saw Steven. This was on some show like E! Hollywood Story about Aerosmith.

Wow! I never knew that about Liv Tyler. When she went to the Aerosmith show, did she already know Steven was her dad or did she find out then? How did she find out? That must have been a jolt for her. Are Todd and Bebe still together? Bebe was a groupie, meaning that she slept with bands or just with Todd? Fascinating.
Yeah, Stevie definitely *picked* me. There was a reason I was drawn to her and I do believe it's an aura. There really is no other way to explain it because I was so not about music that didn't make my ears bleed, at the time  I guess it doesn't work that way for everyone, like your daughter. It helps to be a Playboy centerfold or some type of model...:distress: Rockers and models happen way more than anyone would care to think about. I would imagine the ones that actually land the guys usually have a little more than air between their ears. And perhaps if they're short on that, they at least have a lot of heart.
My daughter and I saw Linkin Park in concert last year. It was a great show. I'm not sure how Mike keeps from shredding his vocal chords. He's truly blessed! Too bad they won't be doing another album for awhile.

Gawd, that is awesome! The idea of making plaster casters is hilarious and that girl had some major cahonies! I checked out her "for sale" items and holy sh*t. Hendrix! I gotta have Hendrix! That is one gorgeous specimen..
I have only one story of attempted (and failed) groupieism. This will explain my fascination for the ones who actually pull it off without a hitch. Truth is, I have no cahonies..
My friend, who shall remain nameless, worked at a restaurant in LA, which shall also remain nameless, in the mid-90s. This place was known for attracting celebrities, from actors to musicians. She's five years older than me (I had just turned 17 at the time) and she worked directly under the assistant manager. She would tell me stories of who came in, what they ordered, if they did anything memorable, etc. One night, a few members of our favorite band of all time (not FM and no one even closely resembling the genre of FM as I was still into ear-bleeding music at the time, but who shall also remain nameless) came in and she got a chance to chat with them. They were touring that year and she and I both had tickets to see two of their shows at the LA Forum later that week. I guess they took a liking to her because they said they would put her name and the name of a guest (me) on the list of backstage invites. She called me during her shift practically screaming into the phone and I was just in shock. I was going to get to meet my idols! So, to make a long story short, we did get backstage and one of the members, who shall remain nameless, she had met at the restaurant propositioned her for a bj. She went for it but we were both pretty tanked by that time, having chugged about 15 beers during the show. Well, midway through, she passed out cold. The *member* (literally!) looked at me to finish the job. I was just a clueless 17-year-old and as I looked at my friend stretched out like a corpse, I thought this was the natural progression of things like that (give someone a bj and pass out) so I took a pass, as well. That was it for us and the groupie thing.. Ultimately, a few years later, she got me a job at the restaurant which was a great place to work if you enjoyed spotting celebrities. One of my co-workers met someone there (who shall remain nameless) who she partied with after in a hotel room (no sex involved) and spent half the evening trying to clean up spilled coke in the bathroom. Between those stories and the ones of my other friend (who works now at a 5 star LA hotel) we have never been lacking in the celebrity stories, but this plaster caster girl takes the cake! Major cahonies!

Here's my only story and it's really lame. Yours is waaayyyy better:
I saw a nameless movie with a hunky nameless actor. Went on the web like the webfreak that I am and posted some questions on a message board. I soon stumbled upon nameless actor's personal assistant who invited me to a gig in SoCali where nameless actor may show up. Can you believe I DROVE the whole way just for this?! Anyway, namelss actor showed up and zipped right up to the VIP lounge with barely a smile and a wave. I was ticked because I thought PA was gonna get me in VIP and he barely acknowledged I was there. Guess he was looking for warm bodies to fill the venue. Mr. Promoter, having taken a liking to me, felt sorry about my dilema and got me back stage with the band, so it was me and 3 other girls. There were pictures and autographs. Mr Promoter showed up at our hotel room in the wee hours, he had been to the band after party. I threw him out because he didn't invite us. This happened about 4 years ago, so if I had attempted something like that at age 17, I'm sure it would have been quite a different outcome. I never thought about backstage at 17. My friends and I went to concerts, got high and went home, that's about it.
It was the Hendrix cast that I was tempted to buy, but heck, that's more than my mortgage payment! Lord have mercy! I printed a picture of it instead. It's with my memorabilia stash along with a gravestone rubbing. Yea, I'm weird. For all the girls trying to get backstage, this very original idea opened some doors for them. Some oddball doors, but oh well. Hendrix? I hear he had a hard time saying "no." :woohoo: :woohoo:
Maybe I was thinking of "Rikki don't lose that number" by Steely Dan. Or maybe both, may have been an urban legend.

I hope nameless actor is someone worth the trip, even though it didn't pan out. It happened a few years ago? Still a party girl I see.. ;)
The groupie stories were humorous, but kinda pathetic. Not sure who to believe. Nameless musician had a big one, no he didn't, yes he did.. These girls are actually seeking it out, though. Good gawd, I never had the thought to seek it out. Well ok, I had the thought but not the guts. :distress: That one time was pure accident and a disastrous one at that.
Hey, maybe we can buy the Hendrix together and timeshare it. I get it for half the year, you get it the other half. Why do I get the feeling other people reading this are totally repulsed..
I've heard Rikki, Don't Lose That Number but I'll have to listen again for the lesbian lyrics. I heard Jackie Blue and tried to listen really closely, but I'll take another listen to that one, too. Wonder if I can download it somewhere. Oh hell, I'll just get one of those box sets.

Me... Party Girl :woohoo: ? Nah, I just wanna have plenty of stories to tell my granddaughter when I'm old and in my rocking chair. Mr. Nameless actor was/is very much single and likes to prowl but manages to keep much of his antics out of the tabloids. He has good people. We were outside smoking cigs when he and his entourage came outside to leave. I've got some great pics of him checking me out. So even if just for that, it was worth it. His bodyguard was being a bu*thead. He's in the pics too, looking all mean... thought he was gonna snag my camera. I was so star struck, had to send my daughter to ask Mr. Nameless if he would take pics with us. He said they had to leave or he would. We found out afterwards who the band we went backstage with was... prior to that, we had no clue. Turns out one dude was an "it" boy in Gollywood. Who knew? Not us?! We're out of touch up here in the NW, I guess.
I haven't read groupie central in awhile. Going there right after this. They are pathetic and I think most of the stories are lies. I would never chase after it either, just knowing what goes on. Obviously, I've put myself into certain situations to allow things to happen, but can't see myself actually going thru with anything.... I don't think.
The Hendrix cast as a timeshare is an excellent idea. That would knock it down to $750. Wait a minute, is there any way those things can be duplicated or would that break some kind of copyright infringement? :D

Damn, girl.. Stop talking like you're 80! If Mr. Nameless actor was checking you out, you still got it goin on.. I admit that I'm now painfully curious as to his identity, as well as the band you went backstage with, but I'm sure we both adhere to the no-tell policy. Sh*t! :(
Yeah, groupie central was pretty much the musicians you think would be putting out.. Pretty well widely known they do. One, in particular and one that shall, again, remain nameless. At least on a public message board. Some of the posts were "oh, he'll do anything that walks." Now, you tell me, what's the fu**ing point? If I were to go to all the trouble, he'd better not be somebody who'd "do anybody." I'm nothing, if not selective ;) So, I guess I'd make a pitiful groupie. Well actually, I think I already proved that..

Damn, girl.. Stop talking like you're 80! If Mr. Nameless actor was checking you out, you still got it goin on.. I admit that I'm now painfully curious as to his identity, as well as the band you went backstage with, but I'm sure we both adhere to the no-tell policy. Sh*t! :(

I don't know that I wouldn't tell because of the no-tell policy. Nothing happened that wouldn't have happened with any normal "fan." I'm just kind of embarrased to say WHO I drove 2,000 miles to see in person. OMG. Can you dig? It was another one of those insanity moments I'm so famous for... they create the stories, you know? :D As for those guys whom are spoken so "highly" of over at voy.com, that's prolly a big part of why THEY got into the biz. Heck, did you check out Lindsey on the SYW tour? He was flirting with all the young babes in the front by the stage. I mean REALLY flirting with them. I was watching him and like going "urg"
I'll PM you with the names.

Cool! Yeah, the guys on the site are all really young and the girls posting are even younger. But age isn't really an issue or an obstacle, as you pointed out in your example of Lindsey. Jesus Christ. I don't wonder too much about Lindsey. I think I have a clue.. Oh and don't feel embarrassed. If he was worth it, you're right. You have a great story. :D I'm going to check my pm now. The curiosity is killing me..

I did a little research over at allmusic.com :)...
"Hot Butter wasn't so much a group as an alias, for keyboard virtuoso Stan Free, a top session player of the 1960's (with credits including work on albums by the Monkees, Arlo Guthrie, John Denver, et al), and a support musician or two working behind his Moog synthesizer. Free had cut several unsuccessful singles under his own name during the late 1960's, and also had been a member of a Moog synthesizer ensemble, the First Moog Quartet, organized by Gershon Kingsley — during their 1969 tour of the United States, the group had used Kingsley's dance instrumental "Popcorn" (which he had written and recorded in 1969 on his album Music To Moog By), as an encore, and it elicited some of the most positive reactions from audiences. Two years later, when Free issued a new recording of "Popcorn", he used the pseudonym Hot Butter; this was a shrewd marketing ploy, for not only did that name seem to fit together with the title of the piece better than "Stan Free" would have, but it also made it easier to remember and request the piece at record stores and on the radio — some accounts say that Kingsley also played on that record, though he wasn't credited. Whoever was on it, the result was a top-10 hit in America and England. Albums and other singles followed, mostly of classical works and familiar pop and movie tunes transcribed for synthesizer, but "Popcorn" remained his sole charting 45. It was popular enough to turn up as theme music and bridge-music for numerous television stations' productions, and is recognized today as an early forerunner of both disco music and synth-pop. In 2000, the collected recordings of Hot Butter were issued on a single CD."
Hot Butter released two albums: "Hot Butter" and "More Hot Butter." I thought you all might enjoy that. I know I did. :wavey:
See, it turned out way cooler than everyone thought! Thanks, Taken! Hmm, now I really want to get that...
