Does anyone else LOVE this song as much as I do??
I have always believed that Stevie wrote it and not Tom Petty-
Seems so much more her style...
Just a question-any one have other thoughts??
~~eclipse~~
ps-And she seems so happy singing it!!

I, too, think La Nicks penned it or at least had something to do with it. I have absoluely NOTHING to base that on though  and as Diss. pointed out, the song appears to have been written and recorded before Stevie and Tom - so I am probably wrong - oh well

I love it, especially as it was performed on the Bella Donna tour video. That moment when she sings "who woulda thought that you'd fall for his line? All of a sudden it's me on the outside". So funny. She seems to giggle when she sings it, maybe because she just realized she sang it from a male or lesbian perspective. Cracks me up!
But I'm gonna go with Tom Petty being the writer.

I love Petty's version but I am sick of Stevie doing it although she did the vocal inflection in Vegas on the "way ay ay t" part a couple of times the same way Tom does it on the studio recording.

I am just tired of it and would like to hear something new - though I like INTK.

I think "I Need to Know" is a great, ferocious song -- classic Tom Petty & classic American pop-rock -- but it was on the Heartbreakers' 2nd album back in early 1978, before Stevie & Tom even met.
But Stevie did used to say that this album ("You're Gonna Get It") was one of her favorites & she used to practice ballet to it, back in her '78 Russian ballerina days, when she was on that kick.
As much as I love the song, Stevie has done it so much that it's worn out. As big a fan as Stevie says she is of Tom Petty, it's weird that she has covered so few songs of his live. There are dozens of classic Petty songs that would make (or would have made) excellent Stevie Nicks material to perform. I've always wanted to hear her play "What Are You Doing in My Life," but she never did that one, despite the fact that she must certainly know it.

I like the song very much, but prefer the Petty version. I enjoyed Stevie's performance of it up to a point, but my beef is that she has way too many rocking songs of her own and there's no need for her to do covers. It makes no sense to me that she chooses to include this in every solo setlist.

I like it back in 81. I definately do not think she wrote it. I just do not like Stevie covering other peoples songs. I think she does best with her own. I had a friend who thought she should be the only singer in FMAC. Can you imagine her doing You Make Loving Fun :distress:

I never thought Stevie wrote it, but I really prefer her version to Tom Petty's. In fact, I don't even like his that much! It was her version that made me love the song. If I ever see her live, I definitely want her to do that one.

Yes, where I can nurture it and love it in my house, giving it the attention a proud, fabulous old warhorse deserves! I really, really do love it, but I wouldn't mind a substitution at all. Unless the sub was crappy. For instance, I'd still rather hear that than HAEWAFY at a concert. Not that that song is crappy, I just don't like it much.

Word. There was only one time I liked that song...back in 1998 when I was front and center at A Day In The Garden. I'd never seen her so emotional.

Yeah, that's the thing about that stupid song - she can deliver it in a great emotional way. Which is cool, but also the bane of my existence. Is it the hat, stevie, that takes you to that space? If so, wear the damn hat, but give us a different song! *Stupid Stevie. She never does whatever I want her to*

I love I Need to Know. I do like Stevie's version better than Tom's but I think it's time for her to retire it. I'd rather hear another Stevie song in its place.
And for the record, I love HAEWAFY! :p

INTK is a fun song. I don't think Stevie wrote it. However, there's just soooo many songs she hasn't done, so I'd like to see it replaced.

yeah - that's me feeling about it, too. Great song, no doubt. Time to give it a rest, though, and make room for something else.
I never questioned that Tom wrote it (if Stevie wrote it, why wouldn't it say "by Stevie Nicks" like all her others? I see no need for a cover up... ) Often times when a woman sings a man's song, she switches the HEs and SHEs to make it conform to her sexual preference. No biggie. I think this song must have some nostalgic meaning for Stevie. She definitely loves it. Maybe it was one of the first songs she sang when she was going solo - and maybe Tom heard her, and said something to the effect of, "yeah, you'll do fine." It may have that kind of backstory for her.

That sounds about right. I even think it could have been kinda written about Stevie. (Although it looks like the dates are wrong, so). But it definitely fits her, and what was going on around then. She was totally leaving by the back dow!!! But, sesly, it's such a great fit I'm glad she did it. And, yes, although I love it so much, she can definitely replace it now that everyone and their mom has heard her do it at shows. Although, I still get all excited for it. :rolleyes Just one of my Stevie weaknesses, I guess. I love the Tom/Stevie Hybrid Monster! Insider is like, my favorite. They have done a lot together, and she has covered him, but I can always use more. When will Tom cover a Stevie song? And What would/could he do? Discuss.

Sorry, I agree with Strand-people are forever bitching. Why focus on the negative when you dont have to,
When I go see Stevie/Mac in concert, the thrill of them walking onstage does me in. They dont have to be perfect, I am just glad we are all sharing those moments together.
I dont expect her or the Mac to be like the first time I saw them In December of 1979. I am there because I have a history of loving them and their music.

I would tend to agree, but I think this might fall more into the "careful what you wish for" category. INTK is a kick-ass, rocking, upbeat song, and Stevie doesn't do NEARLY ENOUGH of these in concert. If she were to replace it with, say, an "Angel" or "Nothing Ever Changes" type song, then great. But if it just gets replaced with yet ANOTHER s-s-l-l-o-o-w-w ballad, a la "Landslide" or "HAEWAFY", then forget it! 'Cause then butts instantly hit the seats and everybody starts yelling at me to sit down, and I hate that.
Oh-and "What Are You Doing in My Life" would be an EXCELLENT choice for a live TP cover. Hell, at this point I'd settle for "Free Fallin'". I really love her version of that one. "Apartment Song" could do well also.

I love this song and Stevie always gets into it...I do prefer it earlier in the set, though, as opposed to the encore it has become over the last several years.
