View Full Version : Would TISL have done better if...

I am new here but I have reading over posts. Do you think Trouble in Shangri La would have been a killer album if Stevie" Voice had been on par with Bella Donna. I loved the lyrics to Candlebright but the vocals killed it. I do have to say that "that made me stronger" and "love changes" should have never made the album in the first place.

Space Needle & Touched By An Angel made the cut over TMMS and TFFT.

Her voice is cold and metallic on that album. That's mainly what I don't dig about it. I also think a much stronger second half would have sold it better. As soon as it gets to Too Far From Texas, everything is spotty.

It shouldn't have been released on the same day as Destiny's Child. It could have opened closer to the top spot.

And Diss is right...it is too spotty on the second half for 'casual' fans to like it to spread the word.

I completely agree. I hate to say it but the best song on that album was written in the seventies, POTU, but the title track would have been killer with better vocals.

I think 'TISL' is a killer album, exactly the way it is.

And dissy needs new speakers (or new ears  )... her voice doesn't sound cold and metallic.
Definitely sounds processed in parts of "Planets," though, but I do believe that was on purpose.

Interestingly, it was not so on the demos -at all. Plus, I guess she has her reasons for doing things, but Space Needle had SUCH potential and we have never seen it two or three records later  But, maybe on the next record.

Note - I like TISL, esp. the titular track. But, it is not my fav. by any means and I blame that on the production quality, which was not to my liking.

I adore the title track, even the computerization at the end is a bit overkill. Some of the songs are among her most overproduced and are devoid of any emotion that I can feel (namely Love Is, etc.). Others like It's Only Love are sparse and beautiful. It's a mixed bag. However, I simply can't believe that casual fans would pick up the album, listen to songs like That Made Me Stronger and Too Far From Texas, and then recommend it to others.

"It's Only Love," "Love Changes," "I Miss You," "Bombay Sapphires," "Fall From Grace" and "Love Is," make up one of my favorite sections of any of Stevie's albums.

TISL is probably my favorite Stevie album. I think it is her best work since her early stuff. Her voice is spot on and you can really feel the conviction in her voice as she's singing. I will always love listening to that album. Considering she hadn't had a solo album out for several years, TISL was quite the comeback for Miss Nicks and I think it did fare quite well.

Good question. Listening to Running Through the Garden and Everybody Finds Out, you can tell someone lit a fire under her ass during the recording. Then listen to the appallingly lethargic Thrown Down, Say You Will, and Destiny Rules. It's like night and day. I think she gets stuck in a rut with her voice quite often.

In the video sniglet of her making it, her voice is seemingly higher than the final product.

I just can't compare that section to the last half of Bella Donna or Wild Heart and I love Stevie. I think she is one of greatest lyricist our time. I just felt dissappointed in her comeback. The chorus vocals are kickier on the 'TISL' outtake, I'll grant you, but "lethargic" is definitely a better description for its verse vocals.

I really don't think you can compare Stevie's Street Angel voice to her TISL voice.... in alot of ways, her voice was better in 1994 - it was stronger, she sang out alot more, and there was great passion behind her words (you can hear it especially in the live shows from that tour)... But then again, some people may consider her TISL voice to be better because she had more range and regained some of her more feminine tone (the Street Angel voice was quite deep)... i guess it's all preference..

I am one of the very few people who thinks Stevie Nicks' voice is better now than it has ever been.

That said, the album probably didn't sell because Stevie isn't considered "bootylicious" by the record-buying public.I agree. Sadly, she's too old at this point to sell like Destiny's Child and others, so I think any lack of record sales has more to do with that than anything else such as vocal quality or track order. Besides, if vocal quality had anything to do with anything these days, Britney and Ashlee wouldn't sell, right?

Anyway, I love her voice from earlier recordings but I love her voice now, too. At first, I was far more into her current voice because it struck me as so mature, sexy, deep, rich...oh I could go on and on. Nowadays I'm not as obsessive about it, but, oddly enough (since it was mentioned unfavorably at the beginning of the thread) whenever I hear "Candlebright" I just think it's pure sex and I have to stop whatever I'm doing to listen to all of it. Seriously, there's this part near the end, at about 4:17 when she says "still I love you" that I hear and I almost die. OMG. So sensual. I have to disagree with you, diss, (not an anomaly, really  ) because I think her more current voice has plenty of emotion and conviction in it. And I don't think songs like "Destiny Rules" and "Say You Will" are lackluster. I figured that the reason they sound different from "Running Through the Garden" is just that they're different songs, not that she's giving them any less of herself. And as for "Thrown Down," well, there's something lackluster about that song in general, including the production. I wouldn't blame it on Stevie's vocals. Anyway, [/end rambling]

But, it is not my fav. by any means and I blame that on the production quality, which was not to my liking.

Sheryl Crow should have produced the entire album as I've said numerous times before. Unfortunately her schedule couldn't permit it at the time.

Diss is right, the second half of the album is spotty, and to me, sounds like a hodgepodge of guest musician contribution but not collaboration, therefore, Stevie and all her "Stevieness" (lol!) got lost somewhere in the middle of it all. I was looking forward to a Stevie Nicks album, not a Stevie Nicks and Friends album. For instance, I'm sure Stevie will wake up one day and ask herself why she ever worked with Macy Gray  :sorry:. Also, if she was going to have guest vocals, I wish it would have only been Sheryl (who she sounds so good with and collaborates so well with) or no guest vocalists at all! Too many cooks (producers and guest musicians) were in the kitchen and it made for a somewhat disjointed album imo.

I disagree, since you can barely hear Macy Gray anyway... and Sarah McLaughlin only adds to Love Is at just the right amount of volume to know she's there... she's a compliment to the track. The only one that really stands out in my mind is Natalie Maines, and I think it works as well...

I don't have a problem with the cd what so ever, and I love John Shanks contribution to the album... it makes for a very full sound, which I prefer... I like what Sheryl did as well.. Over all I think it's brilliant, cept for maybe That Made Me Stronger.. Never did warm up to that one.

I do have to say that "that made me stronger" and "love changes" should have never made the album in the first place.

Two of my faves from the album! Not a chance..."That Made Me Stronger" is probably my #1 fave on the album.

"Touched By An Angel", though, should've made the album instead of being relegated to some obscure movie soundtrack. But, after listening to TISL incessantly for the last couple of days, I now can't think of what song it would replace  ...so, I'm thinking that TISL should've just been one song longer.

Who could have predicted that she'd release her worst album and then follow it with one of her best tours?

A lot of that had to do with her having probably her 2nd best backup band (her first one, the Bella Donna band, being probably the best). Having Rick Vito handle the lead/slide guitar slot for that tour was a real coup...if only Waddy Wachtel (who I really don't like all THAT much, but he's definitely better than Carlos Rios) had been there instead of Carlos. Russ Kunkel on drums again (AND her "musical director" for that tour, too!) And, the ubiquitous Sharon Celani, along with THE Sara Fleetwood on background vocals...that WAS one helluva tour.

TISL, while not a blockbuster success, was a success on many levels: artistically, critically while still achieving moderate sales success for a female singer in her 50's, There are only a handful left that can still have that success at her age, and be supported by a major label.

I think its possible TISL could have done even better if they had released Sorcerer as the lead single (the Sheryl Crow mix).

To my ears Stevies voice sounds strong on TISL, mostly she belts the album. But I was most impressed with the warm honey vocal on "Its only Love" where she reminded me that she can still sing like its the late 70's early 80's all over again. YUM~

And I agree Stevies SA voice in completely different to TISL, but thats really no different from any other Stevie recording. The only recordings that come to mind where her voice remained consistent was Bella Donna to Mirage.

SpyNote
05-18-2005, 10:31 AM
TISL is still my favorite album behind Bella Donna. If I were producer, I would have done the following:

-- Used the alternate mix of "Bombay Sapphires." While it does have a somewhat "world music" sound, the vocals are better and the arrangement is much more compelling, particularly at the end when the tempo speeds up slightly. There is also a nicely defined, edgy bassline that serves as its foundation; the TISL version is nearly void of one. On this version, Stevie should have followed through with her desire to have Sting sing on the track. His high harmonies would have complimented Stevie's lower vocal nicely, in the same respect that his harmonies did wonders against Mark Knoffler's on the otherwise annoying 80s hit "Money for Nothing." But even without him, this version boasts Stevie's high harmonies (at least, I think it's her) in the second and third choruses, which are lacking on the TISL version. This is an example where Stevie should have followed her own past advice not to be her own producer.

-- Bumped all of the non-Stevie penned tracks to b-sides. "Every Day," "Too Far from Texas" and even "It's Only Love" (though I agree the production value is strong) are forgettable tracks. She should have truly followed Tom Petty's "you write your songs yourself" advice and stuck to her own material. All of Stevie's solo records could have been stronger without these lightweight contributions weighing them down.

-- Replaced "Every Day" with "My Heart." The one thing that TISL needed was a hook that could be effectively marketed to radio. I don't think it's her best song, but it had stronger AC hit potential than "Every Day," which was a very weak track on almost every level. Bad lyrics, mediocre vocal, and generally uninteresting.

-- Dumped John Shanks. I think the "cold and metallic" problem comes from his production which is heavy on the pro tools component. Sheryl Crow's production work seems to be more organic and is akin to the production value of Bella Donna. It would been have nice to hear how TISL would have sounded if she'd finished the album. They were definitely on the right track, but taking way too long.

Is Everybody Finds Out even a Fleetwood Mac song? It sounds more like a Rupert Hine production that FM just put on the album.

I think releasing Every Day as the first single was the killer for TISL, just like Say You Will and Peacekeeper as singles killed SYW (should have been SYHA and RttG). That too-low voice growling out the lyrics. For what was being played at the time on pop radio, Love Changes would have been a much better choice -- more uptempo, sparser instrumentation, lighter melody, easier-to-sing-along-to lyrics.

Musically, I think TISL was a fine album. Vocally, I think it was fine. Lyrically, I think it was weak. The words put together in the songs don't seem to make sense to me. I don't get the lyrics to TISL (the song), but it is my favorite. I don't get the beginning of POTU. TMMS and IMU, I can't relate to fame, Paris to Rome, and songwriting. She could have used better metaphors to bring the meaning "down" to my level. TFFT should have been done more country. I guess this album is almost "too Nicksian" in some ways to capture a main stream audience.

Come back Jimmy - all is forgiven! In MHO, the albums Iovine produced were far superior to what has followed - he seemed to understand her sound and voice better than anyone. She could go a little ape**** in the studio - I wouldn't mind! The vocals she offered on live performances like hers and Buck's cover of Green Manalishi were mind blowing.... a couple studio songs like that and she'd be getting a whole lot of new fans.

Personally, I'd love to see her bring out a box set of stuff we haven't heard (officially) - clean up some of the gorgeous demos, outtakes and live performances, instead of yet another set that all her fans have already...

I like John Shanks' production. Sheryl Crow's was too sparse, plain and not very inventive. A first year engineering student could have come up with the sound presented on "Candlebright".

"Love Changes"

All of them stinkers. "Planets of the Universe" should have been the lead-off, across the board single- not just as a dance club track. While I like "Every Day", it's not all that great. "Sorcerer" should have never been a single.

With a few song changes and better marketing/A&R, this album could have been a monster. Instead, it came out roaring and dropped away fairly quickly- the only exception being POTU as a dance track. That sucker went to number one and was in the clubs here in WeHo for quite a bit of time. I think that's probably the most amazing and interesting quirk from this album- a 53 year old "70's dinosaur" rock-n-roller getting a number one dance club single. Awesome.

She kicked major ass on the Street Angel tour. Who could have predicted that she'd release her worst album and then follow it with one of her best tours? Not me. Her voice was strong and powerful on that tour, even when she was sick with bronchitis. My favorite era for her voice has to be from '94-'98 because there was so much power and force behind it. The strength in which she sings Silver Springs on The Dance is awe-inspiring. It's only since about '01 that I think her voice has started to really go downhill. It seems to have lost a lot of the power that it had a few years ago, but aparrently I'm the only one thinks so.

No dis, you're not the only one who thinks so... it is very obvious that her voice has lost it's strength since '97/'98.. but i don't think she neccessarily "lost it", i just think she holds back way too much.. it's still there, but she's "saving it" for some odd reason... maybe it's the vocal lessons?? i remember hearing how she started to take vocal lessons in 1998... funny, that was the year her voice started to sound thinner and much more guarded..

I like John Shanks' production. Sheryl Crow's was too sparse, plain and not very inventive. A first year engineering student could have come up with the sound presented on "Candlebright".

Werd! :p

John Shanks was definately the better of the two producers used for TISL..

I think TISL is definitely Stevie's masterpiece. I never thought I could love an album as much as RAL but this just about surpasses it in my book. She may not take a whole lot of chances vocally but the final product is beautiful. This is the best she has sounded since the early 80's. There are several songs on this album that are on my list of favorite Stevie songs including Bombay Sapphires, TISL, and Fall From Grace. However I could have done without Too Far from TX and That Made me Stronger (insert Space Needle).

I believe the album did not do as well as it should have because they made the mistake of releasing Everyday as the first single which is a mediocre song at best. There were far better songs they could have released that would have increased sales of the album. In fact I don't think Everyday should have been released as a single at all, let alone the lead single.

I agree that Planets should have lead off the album. I would have put out Sorceror next....Everyday...and end with Fall From Grace

The middle of the album is the stinker.

"Too Far From Texas"
"That Made Me Stronger"
"It's Only Love"

Precisely. Though I love It's Only Love. I think that what really makes the second half so jarring is listening to the first-half. Duh. The title track, Candlebright, Sorcerer, POTU, Every Day (which I don't care for but it flows incredibly well), and then BAM Too Far From Texas and the other stinkers, all plopped together. It doesn't really pick up until the fabulous I Miss You, then two more great songs, and then a slow stinker to close it. Horrid sequencing.

Also, it seems to me that the album starts off with four rather dark songs, then gets stuck in this poppy, we've-got-to-make-it-a-bit-happier rut until it reaches the final stretch. I think it would have been amazing if she had included Space Needle, Touched By An Angel, and even Not Make Believe.

What should have? The title track. With a little tweaking and shortening for radio, it would have kicked balls. Start off with the title track, segue into Fall From Grace, and end the singles with Planets of the Universe. It would have let the world know that the rocker chick was back, not a rocker chick turned AC grandma that they were led to believe she was with the release of Every Day.

Cater to them, then. Release the rockers to classic rock stations, not the middle-of-the-road fluff. It's as if record companies don't care these days and just release the blandest stuff from their veteran artists. They need to step up and release something killer off the bat, just like they should have with Stevie. It might get a few people talking and interested enough to go out and buy the album.

Totally!!

I think "Every Day" being used as a first single really set a bad tone for the album... WAY too adult contemporary and not very Stevie Nicks-sounding at all.. Stevie Nicks is the "Queen Of Rock", yes? Every Day is not exactly a rockin' tune :distress:

But they would never play those songs, because it wouldn't fit into their "format"... All they played in 2001 from Stevie was "rhiannon" and "dreams" cuz those seem to "fit the formula" better than anything off TISL... i don't even listen to the radio anymore since i got satellite about a year ago... so, who knows what they're even playing these days.. probably "rhiannon" and "dreams" ...

If the record companies chose not to release fluff like Every Day and instead released, say, Fall From Grace as the first single, I'm sure it would get some airplay on the classic rock stations. I mean, Stevie is simply not going to have a radio hit these days, that's why they have to think about their target audience and cater to them. It's rockers like Edge of Seventeen and SDMHA that made her such a success, release something in that vein and see what happens. ****, one of my local stations classic rock stations played RTTG and Come regularly when SYW was released.

Not a chance in hell. She nailed that A above middle C on "Iiiiiii'vvvveeee CHANged!", but that was the end of a long-built-up phrase. She would have to hit that same note cold at the intro of the song "MEET ME DOWN by the railway station....." Same note.

While I think she can do it, I don't think she would ever risk it- otherwise something like "Sable on Blond" (which has G's A's and B's all over the place) would have been in the setlist at Vegas.

If you compare her music to others during the time period, Stevie has been "rock" up until The Other Side of the Mirror. Midtempo pop in the Bella Donna era was Air Supply and Quarterflash  . Whereas TISL would be considered AAA format versus someone like Creed being considered "rock" for that time period.

You're right. On the surface she looks more like a pop/ballad singer with her hits but her fans can surely label her a rock star from her live performances throughout her career - even today. Her association with Fleetwood Mac alone gives her rock star status. I mean you can't put her in the same group as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey or Diana Ross...those ladies are pop stars and are definitely not rockers.

I Like RAL and TOSOTM - but recognize the shift in voice and quality from BD and, less so, WH. But, one could not have expected her to stay stagnant forever. I think RAL was a big step for her and I think she took a chance there. I like almost all of it, save The Nightmare, and LOVE most of it. But, to each their own

No, no, no, no, no, no..."Whole Lotta Trouble" is the worst offender. Basically, it HAS potential...such as, if it were stripped down and played by the BTM-era Fleetwood Mac...oh, what the Mick/John rhythm section with Rick Vito & Christine McVie could've done with that song...instead, as is...it is a travesty.

Serrart

I just can't compare that section to the last half of Bella Donna or Wild Heart and I love Stevie. I think she is one of greatest lyricist our time. I just felt dissappointed in her comeback. With the exception of FFG and POTU. I don't think her voice sounded any better that it was on street angel. It was not the same voice we hear on the dance or BATB in vegas. I miss that about her.

I love TISL (it's my favourite Stevie solo) and I really like her voice on it, especially because like the mood of the songs, reflects different souls. It's a work of art with some incredible examples of songwriting. It talks of her so sincerely and it's so intimate that becomes a mirror for many. JMO. :)

Whew!! I'm glad she dropped it by the time she got to LA...she'd replaced it with "Rooms On Fire". But, I, also, don't think the Street Angel version (or the SA album in its entirety) is all that bad...a couple of "skip over" tunes, but for the most part, I listen to SA more than WH or BD...but TISL gets 99% of my "Stevie Nicks solo album" play time.

I know but she did so well on the dance and BATB in vegas. Why doesn't she put that energy and intensity into her recent albums.

I think that TISL is almost too full of energy, a new one. She could have gone a lot safer and many more baby boomers would have identified with the album saying: "That's our Stevie". She risked a lot instead, and has all my respect for it. About her voice, what can I say, Celine Dion hits all the high notes and it seems an alarm to me , while Steve never ceases to move me with the intensity of her performances. In 30 years she lived many different lives and her voice reflects it so powerfully, I find it amazing.

Listen the the Rain, Docklands (so kill me), and Kick it are all really good songs and I ADORE the title track, Street Angel. Does anyone else love this song? I love the story in the song and the harmony with David Crosby is simply beautiful. It has such an interesting beat to it, espcially the drums in the beginning. I love the guitar at the end too.

Stevie tends to be lazy...she gets insecure about her vocal range I'm sure!
So she sings lower not to disapoint her inconsistencies of being able to count
on her voice being there on the road! She has never ONCE sang Sorcerer HIGH NOTES LIVE!!!! Beauty & The Beast was great in Vegas..I was there..but all in all the show was not that great!!! Total Rehash!!!

I honestly don't know how ANYONE who was at those Vegas shows could say that they weren't that great. Friday and Saturday were 2 of the best, if not THE best shows I have ever seen her do. Sometimes, I think, she could come out and say "I'm gonna do EVERY song form Buckingham/Nicks and for good measure every B-side that's ever been realeased" and people still wouldn't be happy. Maybe she chose the setlist she did because she knows that the world is going to end if there isn't something to incesently bitch about...maybe she has some insight on that. Maybe by doing the songs that she did do she, in turn, has saved the world. (sarcasm here)

Not understanding exactly what some of the lyrics on an album mean, doesn't make it weak lyrically. Isn't there something on EVERY Stevie album that falls into this category? We can speculate but never know for sure.

TISL is one of my least favorite Stevie albums. I can think of about 4-5 songs I like on it, and the rest I can do without. As for her voice, I think it went downhill around the time of the recording of the album. IMO, she sounds even worse on SYW. :sorry:
All in all, if she would have replaced some of the songs, tried to do *something* with her voice...(she sounds great on BATB), and used different singles (FFG & POTU dance mix), it might have been better.

I loved that song. I got misty eyed the first time I heard it.

If I could change anything about TISL it would be to have gotten rid of It's Only Love and put Touched By An Angel or something in its place. I really don't like It's Only Love whatsoever.

I love her TISL voice. It is sexy and deep and full of passion. I guess I am just really turned on by whisky, raspy vocals. I just don't find it pleasant to listen to. It goes nowhere fast and then just seems to drone on and on for no real reason. The pace is deathly dull and it's sung in such a detached, uninterested voice. I prefer Inspiration and have no idea why that song didn't make the album.

I agree about Inspiration. I also agree GG had have and should have been faster. I just think the lyrics and her delivery of them are cool and stirring to me:

God's Garden

Written by E. Johns

Through the mist I see her face
Looking down on me
Don't know the time, don't know the place
Let her eyes watch over me
She comes in deepest sleep
Can't help but fall at her feet
Won't let her in for all I've seen
This I will take to my grave

I see her walk on water
Head held up high
Playing in God's garden
I'll be there to hold you when you cry

The path grown over through the years
Walking on the pain towards my fears
Talking to myself for comfort's sake
Holding on so I won't break

I see her walk on water
Head held up high
Playing in God's garden
I'll be there to hold you when you cry

Sometimes I hear angels sing
Their tears wash away my sins
Don't know what my destiny will bring
Could you spend eternity with me?

I see her walk on water
Head held up high
Playing in God's garden
I'll be there to hold you when you cry

Back to the original question. TISL wasn't a hit because...well, those days are behind these people. Sad to say, but the hit machine ended for Fleetwood Mac and all of its members in 1987. They've had a few minor singles since, but nothing compared to everything they did between 1975-1987. Sure, there was "The Dance," but that was mostly a rehashing of the earlier material. None of the new songs were hits. So, instead of examining why there hasn't been a lot of success, just face the facts that those days are gone and just enjoy what they're giving us!
