Foxx, Farrell Take on 'Miami Vice' Duty

Mon Feb 14, 3:00 PM ET Movies - AP

LOS ANGELES - Add Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell to the roster of stars resurrecting TV shows for the big screen. Foxx and Farrell will star in a movie version of the cop series "Miami Vice," which will be written and directed by Michael Mann, an executive producer on the show that ran on NBC from 1984-89.

Shooting is scheduled to begin this spring, with the movie tentatively due in theaters July 28, 2006.

Other upcoming movie updates of TV shows include Cedric the Entertainer's "The Honeymooners," Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell's "Bewitched" and "The Dukes of Hazzard," with Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott, Jessica Simpson and Burt Reynolds.

Foxx, who co-starred with Tom Cruise in Mann's hitman thriller "Collateral" last summer, will play Detective Ricardo Tubbs, a role originated for TV by Philip Michael Thomas. Farrell is playing Detective Sonny Crockett, the part created by Don Johnson.

Universal Studios, which is releasing the movie, recently released a DVD set with the first season of "Miami Vice."

Coming off a breakout year, Foxx is the favorite to win the best-actor prize at the Academy Awards on Feb. 27 for his spot-on emulation of Ray Charles in "Ray." He also earned a supporting-actor Oscar nomination for "Collateral."

Foxx's next film is "Jarhead," a Persian Gulf War drama due out this fall from director Sam Mendes ("American Beauty").

Farrell is coming off the epic flop "Alexander." He next stars in another historical saga, "The New World," a tale of John Smith, Pocahontas and the conflict between Indians and 17th century settlers. Terrence Malick ("The Thin Red Line") is directing the film, due out in fall.

Went to see Alexander with a friend of mine... he kept sighing and saying "Oh he's ssoo hot..." And everytime he did that I'd look at him and say "Eyebrows!" really loud just to irritate him and the rest of the people in the audience.

It wasn't a bad movie per se... but it would have been much better if they had done away with all of the scenes of Anthony Hopkins. I don't have a problem with him as an actor, but his role in that movie was pointless and added about 45 minutes to an already overly long movie.

That movie was horrific! I saw a screener and couldn't get past the first hour. Angelina Jolie hit an all-time low, she was shockingly bad, but Farrel was putrid. Truly nauseating.

Mostly my friend has issues with Stevie's fashion sense, or lack thereof (his words, not mine. My eyes were glued to Lindsey the entire time). I took him to a SYW concert, but I don't think he was paying any attention at all to the music. On one side of him was a really old gay man, on the other side was a teenaged girl in a bikini top, and both were hitting on him all night long.

The teeny-bopper kept yelling "Stevie, I want to have your baby!" and telling my friend what great hair he has. She even game him her phone number. Silly girl.

He also spent the night trying to convince me that Lindsey isn't straight. I could see him maybe swinging both ways and could totally dig it if he did, but I think my friend's gaydar is malfunctioning.

And if one of us was dating that Stevie fan? Oh I don't even want to imagine. I've seen the wrath of some Stevie-ites - they can be downright rabid when their blood's up!

Well, it's not supposed to, but it does. Last night, after I saw my hometown on the news for the "Anti gay marriage rally" and then the "Town officials say that will not be tolerated and that Placerville is a 'hate free city'" I started looking for pics of it on the web, and this is actually the historic bell tower in the middle of town with Xmas lights on it, that some vacationer took a pic of. I actually met two of the guys, and one was really cool. I made the mistake of telling my friend that I liked the guy (as in, I liked him FOR my friend) and his response: "Really? He's bi, you know. You want him?"
Of course by the next week Mr. Bi-guy was yesterday's news.
Then I met this other guy my friend was with (and had met on the internet) who lives in a loft in San Francisco with two other gay guys. Last I heard my friend wasn't with Mr. SF Loft anymore but was still sleeping with him. Hence the reason I gave up trying to keep track.

What really gets me about the situation with Mr. SF Loft, is that part of the reason why he and my friend broke up is because the sex wasn't that great since both of them are "bottoms."

Okay, so the sex sucks. So let's break up but keep having sex? WTF?

The funny thing about that statement is that the time I met Mr. Loft, my friend and I went to his place to watch Queer as Folk since we happened to be in SF and neither of us have Showtime. (BTW, am absolutely drooling in anticipation of the DVD release of Season 4)

I don't know everyone thinks this will suck. The key words for me are Michael Mann. The man has made some incredible films: Manhunter, The Last Of The Mohicans, The Insider, Heat, Ali and Collateral, to name but a few. I'm no fan of Colin Farrell but if Mann (who created Miami Vice - a huge hit in its day) is writing and directing I think it has every chance of being great and I certainly am looking forward to seeing it.

I think it's that Colin Farrel offends me on such a visceral level that nothing he's in could possibly be good to me.

Alexander was just the worst movie ever.See, now I thought it was a major (albeit deeply flawed) achievement. I found the use of CGI in it far more interesting than in other CGI-filled epics the past several years. It's an amazing movie the way that "Ivan the Terrible" or Gance's "Napoleon" is amazing -- it's loony-visionary. The battle scenes (particularly the first battle scene) pulse with perspective, irony & symbolism; Alexander tells his soldiers that they are free men, in contrast to the hordes who serve Darius. But their freedom is defined by Alexandar's dominating will & their own concept of freedom as nothing more than personal gain & self-interest. And the use of the eagle in that scene is amazing -- it bespeaks a director with a true sense of the sublime, not just a computer geek like Peter Jackson, Wolfy Peterson, James Cameron or dozens of others. Alexandar rallies his men with a speech about the superiority of the Macedonians because of their concept of individuality. The Persians await the battle across the field -- silent, stone-faced, subservient robots. Alexandar's horse stomps the earth restlessly, but then something strange & remarkable occurs: the image turns blue & there is silence. You see an eagle, & you're suddenly borne aloft, above the armies. You're gliding a mile or more above it all, but you can still hear faint echoes of Alexander's voice, as if his words had risen through the atmosphere to the abode of the gods.

A lot of the movie is a mess: crude & boffo. But it has vision & breadth, & it kept me entertained. It's like a psychedelic omelet filled with everything from Shakespeare to Freud to Nietzsche, & topped with shredded Hunter S. Thompson cheese. All pretend-epics should be like this: gutsy, brash & slightly loony -- the way Gance approached "Napoleon" or Griffith "Intolerance" or Bertolucci "Novecento." These are primordially personal filmmaking statements, not the bland, mass-produced swill you get from committees of shirts at the studios.

Those dudes with those monstrous tattoos hurt my everything. They embody the term "tacky." Must be compensating for a lack of a noteworthy penis.

I actually really like tattoos, although I'm too much of a wuss to ever get one of my own. One of my real life crushes has a full colored sleave on one arm and has started work on the other. He also has several on his back. Unfortunately one of them is his wife's name. :(

Oddly enough, he's probably the only man I'm attracted to who isn't in love with himself. On the contrary, he's actually a spineless "yes, dear" who lets his wife treat him like **** even though she doesn't work and doesn't put out.

Jason, get out your speedos!

({whiny voice} "But, I don't look like that any morrrrrrrrrreeee........" {pouts off to the corner and storms off the stage ala Suzanne Sugarbaker})

Notice I have not said that lately - well that mostly is because I have been hitting the gym and my 34 yes 34 pants today with the undershirt and top shirt tucked in. The pleats were not taut and the pockets closed. So, give me one more month and a tanning bed and all you posers are toast :wavey: :wavey:

Another remake? OMFG
