I'm pretty new here so I don't know if this thread's been done before, but if it has I'm doing it again. What are, in terms of entertainment, are your guilty pleasures?

Here are mine:

Music -
Justin Timberlake
J. Lo
Disco music
80's One Hit Wonders
Enrique Iglesias
Kevin "Bloody" Wilson (australian comedian)
Boy George
Crash Test Dummies
Extreme

Movies -
Roman period epics - The Robe, Demetrius and the Gladiators, The Silver Chalice, etc.
Showgirls
Austin Powers: Goldmember (any movie where Britney Spears' head blows up is okay by me.)
Saturday Night Special (w/ Billy Burnette)
Joe's Apartment (singing, dancing cockroaches!)
Caligula (this doesn't count as a Roman epic because it's basically porn, and really bad porn at that)
Caveman (gotta love a prehistoric Ringo!)
Samson and Delilah

Television -
Queer as Folk (what can I say, Hal Sparks and Gale Harold are hot!)
Pimp My Ride
The Surreal Life
Room Raiders

Books -
Cheesy period romance novels by people like Nora Roberts and Judith McNaught

Caligula (this doesn't count as a Roman epic because it's basically porn, and really bad porn at that)

I? Love Caligula. A career low for all involved, but utterly fascinating. You've seen the uncut version, right?

For movies, let's see...

Tulse Luper Suitcase - Unwatchable, but you can't take your eyes off of it.
Crash - My dear Holly, why?
Showgirls - Gina Gershon. Enough said.
Big Business - Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler with bad special effects, you can't beat it.
Napoleon and Samantha - Love it to pieces.
The Hunger - Bowie, Sarandon, AND Deneuve.
Calendar Girls - Cracks me up. And I like Helen Mirren's boobies.
In the Gloaming - Makes me all verklempt every time, even though it's so manipulative.
The Hotel New Hampshire - No plot, but who cares.

Yes, I have the uncut version on DVD. Probably wouldn't have bought it if I had realized at the time that it was put out by Penthouse Magazine. Hind sight is always 20/20. Oh well.
It's one of those movies I watch with my bedroom door locked and the volume set on low so nobody else can hear it or catch me watching it. Showgirls is another one.

'Tis a wonder that Caligula never won any Oscars... with scenes like Caligula murdering what's-his-face and having the man's penis cut off and fed to the dogs, then those two freaky girls urinate on the corpse...

Um, The Hunger shouldn't be a guilty pleasure, everyone likes it! :)
This isn't media related, but "eating chips while reading in bed"
media? I don't know how you guys come up with answers so fast.
Most of my music is a guilty pleasure  (Can you say, Juice Newton?)
movies, all I can think of are when I like movies that are obviously B movies. But there's a lot. The best, though, is Bordello of Blood. I used to think I had really cheesy tastes all around, until I started coming here...
Oh, I feel guilty when I sing and groove around to El D'Barge's "Rhythm of the Night" - my friend wanted me to dl it one night, and since then, "i've grown accustomed to it's face"
Most of my worst habits are probably related to what i watch on TV. If i had cable, i'd be addicted to Real World and Road Rules as i was before. And, currently, America's Next Top Model is probably my most shameful viewing.

Never seen it. What's it about?

Bowie and Deneuve are vampires, but he's aging rapidly and Denueve gets the hots for Sarandon, a doctor who specializes in aging, and wants to replace Bowie with her when he dies. It's fabulous but wretched all the same. It's worth seeing just for the lengthy lesbian sex scene between Sarandon and Deneuve, who are both amazingly gorgeous. ;)

The TV show was the pits, though.

I thought The Hunger was such an art film for that time period - or at least it tried to be. Plus, CD was the hottest thing I have ever senn in my life in that "Are you flirting with me Mrs. Blaylock?" "Not that I am aware of Miriam" - SSHHHEEEBUS

I thought The Hunger was such an art film for that time period - or at least it tried to be.

Which is what made it so bad, IMO. They tried to fuse commercialism with artistry and it ended up a mutt. It didn't help that the studio interfered so much and forced that ending upon us.

Schrader tried to do the same thing with Cat People, but he was even less successful than Tony Scott was.

Plus, CD was the hottest thing I have ever senn in my life in that "Are you flirting with me Mrs. Blaylock?" "Not that I am aware of Miriam" - SSHHHEEEBUS

She was hot, but I thought Sarandon was equally hot. That scene with the two of them...heart palpitations.

I have a pic of that in my "Great Actresses" book (gaw, i'm a dork! an actress dork! It's a really good book, though, it has pics of everyone, even from foreign countries, throughout film time, I highly recommend it. I got it when i was 15, I think.) And I didn't think she looked too bad. again, though, i've never seen the whole movie. And the original irritated me, in that way that "Bewitched" irritated me. Cause it's a "Big Secret", and she couldn't possibly tell anyone, even though her power is really cool. Because none of the "normal population" (Whatev.!) could possibly understand!
Geez, how many times did i wish i could turn into a cat when i was young? or even now?
Gaw, if someone i was dating suddenly told me they could turn into a cat, I'd be frickin' STOKED!!!!
Here's the pic I have of Miss Kinski, from that movie: Looks lovely, here. And I have to say, I really enjoyed "Hotel New Hampshire", the book, and the movie, and the affair between Jodi and Nastassia. I, personally, think she is exceptionally beautiful. :D Hey, there has to be a reason why Roman Polanski sought her out, right? http://tinypic.com/1pxr2x

Both are favorites of mine, but the book is better. The movie is a ****ing mess. It's so clumsy and ill thought out. By the halfway mark, almost everyone dies and the remaing few move into a hotel with socialist terrorists. It happens so clumsily in the film that it's unbelievable. Irving books don't translate well to the screen, IMO. He's too dark and twisted to really capture. Hotel New Hampshire has rape, incest, suicide, lesbianism, terrorists and the like, yet the movie doesn't know what to do with any of it.

She was great as Suzie the Bear, though.

Anything on MTV and VH1. I can put those channels on and watch all of those horrible shows. I will NOT watch like Room Raiders or Do You Wanna Come In...those are a bit too horrid but like Newlyweds and Sweet 16...I love it all.

MUSIC: I love 80's music very much. Anything with sythesizers are awesome to me. I just downloaded like Nikita from Elton John and Radio Ga Ga from Queen and songs like that. What people consider the worst from an artist, I consider the best.

ABBA...they were reunited last night btw. All four showed up for the Swedish Premiere of the play Mamma Mia.

Someone else mentioned the Spice Girls. I really like a couple of their songs.

Julie Andrews movies...Mary Poppins, Sound of Music, Victor Victoria...I could watch all of them over and over.

Fashion shows..magazines...I eat it up.

You probably think Christine is just empty pop, gooey & bland.

Little do you realize that she is actually one of the most corrosive, nihilistic punk-rock visionaries of all time, erupting like a colon filled with hydrogen sulfide with the ugliness & moral degradation that suffuse all cosmic visions of Hell.
David, why do you mock me so? :woohoo:

 I USED to love her. You know, back when she could hit more than five notes.....
Face the facts, folks. Love her or not, Christine is the ONLY one who can still sing.

I still like Stevie, but her range is just not what it used to be. Lindsey has also lost most of his range. And Christine (the oldest of the 3) sounds almost the exact same as she did 30+ years ago (and looks awsome too!).

It's only me or your messages visually suddenly blow up in proportions? Feeling a bit Brechtian David? By the way I agree on this too (even if without the apocalyptic tone). She's a master in irony and substance under a soft listening appearance, IMO.

Preach it sister(?)! It truly IS amazing, that Christine sounds BETTER now than she did 30 years ago. I think some people are naturally gifted singers, and, some just give it their best shot(and do okay, until they age, and the hormones crap out on them).
I love Stevie's older stuff, but I can't stand to listen to her bleat now.....

Lindsey has also lost most of his range.

You speak of this as if it's a bad thing. Considering Lindsey's voice used to go so high that at times he sounded either like or woman or like someone who'd just inhaled helium (and I'm not just talking about the times he'd use studio tricks to intentionally make it sound that way), I'm quite glad that his voice has dropped considerably. He has a much more manly sound to his voice now that is just so damn sexy. :] IMO, his loss of range equates to an improved singing voice.

Brwneyes is male. The pic in his avatar I believe is of Anne Coulter.

Christine doesn't sound better than she did 30 years ago, she sounds exactly the same. Which, if you enjoy her music, is a good thing. If you don't, then that means her voice puts you to sleep just as much now as it did then.

Don't get me wrong, CM has SOME songs that I do enjoy very much but for the most part, I could take her or leave her. Makes no difference to me.

Short? What is she, 5' 1"? That's a bit more than short. Even my half-asian ass is taller than her.

There are lots of things that I don't like about her that go beyond her voice, but I don't have the time to list them all. Suffice it to say, I like some of her songs, even love some of them, but I don't like her and I don't find her attractive.

it really didn't sound like a joke before. The part where you stated your racial a** preferences? A joke? hmmm. And you didn't seem to be joking about what you were saying about Stevie either. Whatever, I usually don't mind non stevie fans, or anything, but the combo of everything you've said just chapped my hide tonight. So I should cut out on this conversation, because at the moment, the only thing i really have to say to you, is:
http://tinypic.com/1q4s9j

Well I wasn't joking about the "racial ass preferences." But I guess the fact that I would dare even mention differences between the races got your blood boiling and you couldn't see any levity in any comments I made before or after that. If you took offense to my comments, I really do apologize - but I won't take any of the comments back.
Sometimes I forget how easy it is for sarcasm to be misconstrued on a printed forum, since I don't have the benefit of the use of facial expressions (beyond the limited scope of the smileys) and tone of voice to convey my real meaning.

So again, I apologize for truly offending you. It really wasn't my intention.

In the words of the late-great Warren Zevon, in a song covered by your favorite Stevie Nicks:

Let's let bygones be forgotten
Reconsider me...

Damn! I knew I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut. It's not your mentioning differences between races that gets to me, it's the judgement of those differences, and, your judgement directly insulted me, my ass, and my races' ass. But, there is really nothing I can do about your racial ass preferences, insulting though i think they are, so whatever.

Sheesh... I made my apologies. What more do you want? :distress:

And as I've said before... It wasn't meant to be a racist comment. I was simply stating MY PERSONAL PREFERENCES. Simply put, I think large rear ends look good on certain people, but not on others. So please... I'm begging you... lower your defenses already. I wasn't trying to insult you.

*OMigod, my home town is on the news - there was a giant antigay marriage rally, (oh, those pesky mormon/redneck/uppermiddle class kids!) and then a response by the city leaders (and counterdemonstrators) that that kind of hate message would not be tolerated in Placerville, and that it is declared a hate free "city" (city? not even) blah blah...How weird for me!* Anyway, back to my thought, it's fine, i'll talk to you later, or whatever, have a great night. A little late in the game, I know, but I just thought of a big guilty pleasure that I had forgotten to mention...

I LOVE to go to a movie rental place and find the cheesiest possible B-movies (usually horror) to watch. If you're ever in one of the places, check out The Mummy's Kiss, Blood Gnome, Killer Rats, Rodentz, and Anklebiters. Those are a few of the "gems" I've come across.

Speaking of B-movies... has anyone seen Gypsy 83? It has something to do with the "Night of a Thousand Stevies." I almost rented it last time, but ended up with Blood Gnome instead.

You mean a sleep-inducing experience?

Not for me. She talks of feelings without shouting, but many times with a subtle unexpected intensity or poignant irony. Her arrangements sometimes aren't my cup of tea, but IMO she wrote and keeps writing great songs.

I bet she can survive.

It's a bad thing when you're still trying to sing a song like Go Your Own Way in the same key!

Yea she has been lowering alot of her songs!

Each to their own. I think what you and others see as subtlety perhaps disguising intensity, I see as a basic lack of feeling, or lack of expressing anything original.

Very good point and her lack of originality is what has made me lose interest in her. There are only so many songs one can write about dreams before it gets laughable. Her songs have consistently become more explicitly self-involved over the years and I simply do not listen to music to hear the innermost personal thoughts of an artist in an attempt to get to know them, unlike some Stevie fans who listen to her to know the woman behind the songs. I have no desire to know her, I've never met the chick. I listen to music for the pleasure of it, the element of surprise and originality, and the emotional connection I may make to it.

Beautiful Child is the ONLY song she can sing well these days. She croaks everything else. Have you seen Live In Boston? I was there and thought it was phenomenal, but then I saw the DVD and realized just how dull and vocally uninspired she really was for most of it. Say You Will is simply unbearable on it, that vocal is horrifying.

Her new material does nothing for me. It's uninspired and lazy to these ears. She's still capable of hitting it out of the park (the song TISL, for example), but for some reason she chooses not to. Scribbling inane mumbo jumbo in your journal does not a good song make.

Her new album is great to me because it's finally her outside THE MAC, able to be truly herself! Very British/blues/pop production and very laid back!

My question is...how in the hell did she screw up most of her range from The Dance until now! Silver Springs from Live in Boston sounds NOTHING like when it was done on The Dance. First of all, the keyboard player STINKS and it sounds like he is playing a cheap keyboard he got at walmart! (Not the awesome Yamaha Grand played by Chris). Secondly, The song is played WAY to fast, and at the end Lindsey is SCREAMING THE LYRICS!!!! And it is missing the great three-part harmony! How did they f*ck up such a great song between The Dance and Live In Boston?

My question is...how in the hell did she screw up most of her range from The Dance until now!

You know, this is actually very interesting. During The Dance, her voice was very powerful, there was a lot of strength to it. It got even better during the Enchanted tour. Then something just happened in 2001. The last boot out there from 2000 (AHI benefit) shows her with a still powerful voice. Then she made the rounds for TISL on various talk shows and I simply could not believe how whispy and thin her voice was. It was unbelievable. And it had only been a matter of months since she had sounded fabulous. Then she had a lot of problems with her voice and illnesses, and her voice simply has not recovered. She must have really done something to really f*ck it up, because she's now lost the range she had four years ago.

Silver Springs from Live in Boston sounds NOTHING like when it was done on The Dance. First of all, the keyboard player STINKS and it sounds like he is playing a cheap keyboard he got at walmart! Firstly, I can't stand Brett Tuggle.

Silver Springs should never have returned, they should have let it stay glorious. Her voice cannot do it justice and when people say it's more instense than it was in '97, they're only saying that because she's overcompensating for a diminished vocal range by screaming it. It's kind of sad to me. :(

As much as I hate to agree with Johnny Stew, he pretty much summed up those feelings in regards to how I feel about Stevie and he was spot on.

I have no use for an artist who cannot still wow me after so many years. Lindsey can. Bowie can. Debbie can. Bonnie Raitt certainly did last night at the Grammy's (made me f*cking cry  ). I need for them to stay fresh and true to their art form. After writing such fabulous music for so long, one cannot flee into the shadows of mediocrity. Stevie has and her songs these days just make me roll my eyes and say "You did this fifteen years ago, darling."

Absolutely. It had a glorious return with The Dance, one that could never ever be matched, not just because of the vocal, but the all the circumstances surrounding it (the return of Lindsey, the unearthing of the song, etc.) They should have let it have its moment and not keep trotting it out like some worn out old nag...

Very well put. It was so amazing back then because it was special and because her voice simply soared on it. Whether it was fixed up in the studio or not, it's one of the best vocals she's ever put on record. She showed exactly how it was done and it was one of her crowning achievements. Unfortunately, it just looked like performing it was a chore on this past tour and her ragged voice didn't complement it.

Well, LB tried that - but came back to FM because his solo stuff (Out of the Cradle and GOS) was not warmly received from a financial perspective, which he obviously and rightly cares about. Interestingly and sadly, his solo effort GOS as translated to SYW was also not warmly received from a financial perspective. Plus, he said he likes working with FM, esp. Stevie, as evidenced by his emotional scene in the Destiny Rules doc. But, who knows, maybe he will release a solo record soon as he has alleged, though we do not reckon "soon" the same I suspect  I, for one, hope he does release a solo record in the next year because I like his solo stuff.

Ah - wow - have these words been uttered...perhaps I should jaunt on over the Chris board sometime.

I don't care if people say crap like that about Stevie- I mean if they don't "get it" then fine - don't listen - I find it sad because really there is so much beauty in Stevie's words and such.....it's just what I love....

If them's fightin' words so be it :) It's Stevie all the way for me (though I also love Linds :) - not as rabidly as some - but I enjoy his solo endeavors)

AND - when I first got into Fleetwood Mac I SWORE I wouldn't become one of the "Stevie obsessives" - I got all into Chris - and got one of her solo albums and everything - then I honestly don't know what happened - but I became a Stevie obsessive

She doesn't conjure images of violent rage? Actually all music aside, from what I can see, Christine seems like the personality I'd like to be around the most. That is assuming we weren't doing anything meaningful. I'm not sure how I found myself in a situation with any of them though. Actually with an irrational Stevie presence you do need a bit of Lindsey so as to not be isolated in your recognition of this irrationality. Whatever, Christine seems like a hoot.

 No - no violent rages....none of them do - and I agree personality wise Chris kicks some ass for sure - I think personality wise though John wins for my favorite :D

Each to their own. I think what you and others see as subtlety perhaps disguising intensity, I see as a basic lack of feeling, or lack of expressing anything original. I'm trying to come off as objective but I think I'm succeeding. My favourite song of all-time is A Day In The Life by John Lennon (ok, The Beatles, whatever). That, Strawberry Fields, Nowhere Man, She Said She Said etc. use brilliant subtlety to give glimpse of a state where the author is actually screaming. On the other hand he has songs such as Mother, God and even Help which are what I'd consider those songs that talk about feeling by the use of shouting them. As for Christine's subtlety, well if you can see what it is that I like about those earlier mentioned Lennon songs then I don't need to explain to you why her lyrics often cause more pain than pleasure.

Did that prove anything? Probably not.

Infinity can be in a cup of coffee. Originality for me is only an instrument, some use it in the most poetic way (see Lennon), some others bore you to tears. I think Christine McVie speaks of every day situations with every day words, but has the talent to bring a surprising and sometimes fulfilling light to both of them. :)

But, who knows, maybe he will release a solo record soon as he has alleged, though we do not reckon "soon" the same I suspect  I, for one, hope he does release a solo record in the next year because I like his solo stuff.

hhhmmm... the most emotional scene that stands out to me in Destiny Rules was the fight that got started when Karen (that's the name of Stevie's assistant, right?) mentioned Stevie's lawyers...

I also remember a comment Lindsey made of being willing to eat a "f*** of a lot of money" (or something to that effect) in order to get his creative vision realized.

Come to think of it, he had quite a few emotional scenes.

I'm just tired of FM projects getting in the way of his solo work. First it was Tango, then The Dance, and now Say You Will. It's been 13 years since the last solo album... I think it's long overdue and he needs to get the damned thing out. Besides that... there's nothing I wouldn't give to see him perform live, without Stevie's irritating hand gestures (see "Say You Will" from LIB- I can't decide if she's trying to rope someone in the audience or do the "I'm a Little Teapot" dance) and without Mick's ego-stroking drum and vest solo.

Also... not that thrilled with the song choices on SYW. I hadn't heard "Peacekeeper" or "What's the World Coming To" before and was thrilled to see "Come," "Murrow," and "Miranda" on the track list, but I'm not a big fan of "Red Rover" or "Say Goodbye" and we heard "Bleed to Love Her" already on The Dance. That slot could have been better filled with something like "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind" (my all-time favorite Buckingham song).

Although some people may have found this insulting (why, i don't know... after all it was directed at Stevie, and as far as I know, she isn't a Ledgie) that really wasn't the intention. I've seen many rather insulting things being stated on these boards about my favorite, Lindsey Buckingham - but rather than getting all upset about it, I either ignore the post or calmly express my disagreement. I respect their opinions but to attack her for losing her range is pointless, for me. Her voice today is powerful in so many ways, and arrives straight to my soul, and I think to many others too. If they want to go around in the circle of dissing, more power to them. What really means is unattached for me. ;)

I don't attack her for losing her range, she did that to herself through years of abuse on her vocal chords. She never knew how to sing and that's what screwed it up. What I do attack her for are her lackluster performances due to her severely diminished range and matronly, immobile stage presence. If I don't think her performances are up to snuff, I'll say so. No one has any trouble complaining when they think Lindsey screams his songs or that his voice is piss-poor, it should be no different for Miss Nicks. It's all a matter of preference.

Smoking doesn't really effect the sound of your voice as much as it does your breath control. I mean look at Chris, used to be a smoker...it hasn't effected the way she sounds at all! I think you were correct in saying before that Stevie didn't know how to sing correctly and is now paying for it.

Oh, it most certainly does, especially if you smoked three packs a day for as long as Stevie Nicks did. Add to that all the abuse to her chords from singing improperly (she must have thought a diaphragm was simply a contraceptive), snorting all that coke, drinking all that booze, etc. She's lucky she can even talk.

 Then he had to sell the toilet because he JUST HAD to have an 18 track CD, and only being paid for 12.

Oh wait, she does also sound great (IMO) on Stand Back! The Live version from Boston is my fav. of the song...EVER!

I dunno what is worse...him saying the same thing over and over or looking like death warmed over on the AMAs. I know it was a late night that night, but at least smile.

I think it just galls people who hate La Nicks to have to face the reality that LB considers her a major talent he enjoys working with and being around.

No, it doesn't gall me. LB considers many people-- whom I have little or no respect for-- major talents. Radiohead, for example, puts me to sleep more readily than most music. And Vanessa Carlton? I assume he considers her talented if he agreed to work with her, but I can't tell her apart from Michelle Branch or half the other new "artists" out there.
As much as I respect and admire his ability as a musician, I don't put much stock in what he considers talent.

tea mixed with warm/hot honey, That will help yer throat...It worked for me!

I hardly ever get to the point where I can't sing because I know how to sing properly and take care of my voice, but honey and tea only soothes my voice, doesn't really open it up and loosen it much. Spinach does, though, but I hate spinach.

Michelle Branch = BAD

Vanessa Carlton = GREAT (better pianist than singer, but still awesome)

I feel the same way - he totally has a condescending air about him - but it comes across more in interviews to me :o

At least he doens't come across as a flighty airhead. :o

You have that completely backwards...Vanessa Carlton is not so great - in fact she's got this HORRIBLE Time Warner commercial out right - her voice is painfully bad in that commercial....

especially spinach/artichoke quesadillas...Yum!

Nothing can help my throat as of late (Had another choking attack last night) except for another surgery, Which seems inevitable :(

Cute and amusing? If you say so...

But then again, the things I find cute and amusing probably irritate other Ledgies...

Like when Lindsey runs around onstage, jumping up and down, flailing his arms around, chasing Stevie, harrassing John, to the point where I almost wonder if he suffers from adult ADHD (and yes I know it's staged and he did it at every show - I went to three of them.)

the DVD I have of the performance of "Stand Back" from Storytellers smokes the LIB version in the dust...Though I prefer the "A Day in the Garden" version with Stevie shakin' her 2 birds of Rhiannon in a very sexy way, Definitely had my attention on that song!!!

THAT is a GREAT example of her giving a great vocal - sadly, IMO the production is a little weak when compared to the fire of the older ones.
