THAT is a GREAT example of her giving a great vocal - sadly, IMO the production is a little weak when compared to the fire of the older ones.

Well, of course, it's on the record and she didn't have to sing it live. Imagine how it would sound without being fixed-up in the studio.

I think she sang RTTG live just as well as she did on the record and the vocals are similar  I also think she sounded great in the video sniglets of the making of SYW - I do not think LB did and that saddens me because I like him. I mean he was off key when doing those harmonies  But, I love him nonetheless for it!!!!!!! So, I think she can sing the vocals she records.

That is true. I'm totally a case though of blind listening when it comes to Stevie - I'm one of those fans who's made fun of because I just see her doing no wrong when it comes to her songs (I know this isn't true) - I just am happy listening to her sing anything

No way, she dropped the key for RTTG and slowed it down. I'm convinced it was dropped because her voice couldn't handle it. And I think she droned in those video clips, she was especially wretched on Miranda and WTWCT. And if she can sing the vocals on the records, she shouldn't be using pro-tools. ;)

That's the way I am about Lindsey, Justin and Keith. They can do no wrong, in my eyes. I love listening to their voices, off notes and all. They all sing differently live and make each song unique. Most of the time, I prefer to hear them sing live, instead of on a CD...when they are kind of put into a box.

She is not much lower in the MP3's I have. And - her voice very well may have not been able to handle it, but that does not mean she did not sing it on the record, which is what I thought you were saying when you talked about the studio fixes, etc.

Finally, show me one musician today who does not use pro tools, which she says they did not use interestingly enough.

She certainly utilized them on TISL, cripes. It hardly sounds like her.

As for other artists who don't use pro tools, the only ones I know of that don't use them are Aimee Mann and Bette Midler.

I don't attack her for losing her range, she did that to herself through years of abuse on her vocal chords. She never knew how to sing and that's what screwed it up. What I do attack her for are her lackluster performances due to her severely diminished range and matronly, immobile stage presence. If I don't think her performances are up to snuff, I'll say so. No one has any trouble complaining when they think Lindsey screams his songs or that his voice is piss-poor, it should be no different for Miss Nicks. It's all a matter of preference.

Freedom of expression, gotta love it :woohoo: . It's always a matter a preference, but how many times would you play the innuendo of the same song waiting for a choir? We're in the chit chat forum, in the guilty pleasures thread and I'm stuck in a deja vu. Be original, for once Dissention, please! J/K I know you can't. ;)

No way, she dropped the key for RTTG and slowed it down. I'm convinced it was dropped because her voice couldn't handle it.Guys, remember that it's a lot different for singers when they sing in a controlled studio environment, often with headsets on, versus when they sing in a cavernous hall with 10,000 people yelling & a fourteen-piece rock band blasting away behind them (with the amplification hitting the singers from behind & atop). As HomerMcVie has noted, it's extremely difficult to locate pitch & sustain it in such an environment. Plus, your voice box & its ability to sound is highly reliant on your entire auditory apparatus -- ever notice how raw you sound trying to sing in the close confines of your automobile after being at a loud rock concert for two hours?

(Of course, that's part of the reason we pay them $75 a ticket.)

While I can't side with you on Justin and Keith, I do most certainly agree that Lindsey sounds much better live than on the studio recordings. In a live performance he doesn't get the opportunity to tweak his vocals and you get his natural voice instead (albeit along with recordings of tweaked background vocals - i.e. Peacekeeper), which is the way I prefer to hear him.

In a live performance he doesn't get the opportunity to tweak his vocals and you get his natural voice insteadI wouldn't say it's his natural voice, strictly speaking. He's got more or less wet or dry signals on his vocal mic, he's got varying levels of reverb, of chorus, of flange, of lots of different FX that his mixer is controlling.

His natural voice is what he sounds like singing "Peacekeeper" in his living room without a mic.

Aimee has said that she thinks artists who use pro-tools are putting on a front and that if they really had the talent, they wouldn't feel the need to use them. When Bette made the Clooney tribute album, her and Manilow decided against using any real studio gadgets and recorded it live with a band, resulting in an almost live album with her plain voice.

I don't begrudge anyone who uses them, but I wish people would release just their true talent and not something achieved with the help of computers.

No, I don't think either sounded very good. I don't view Lindsey Buckingham with blinders, just as I don't view Stevie Nicks with them. He's lost quite a bit of range and his voice can grate a lot, while she's lost even more and tends to drone endlessly. :wavey:

The element I don't care for anymore in her voice is the snot element. It sort of churns my stomach when I hear the snot in her nasal passages ricochet around in there. But it also makes her sound very vulnerable -- like a wounded woman -- so that counterbalances the recurrent obstructive bronchial syndrome.

Well, that is a fine line - I mean where do you draw the line - is gigital recording okay as opposed to analog? AND - I forget which one of Bette's song it was (but it was a biggie) was recorded to totally different music and then they changed the music afterward and tweaked the vocal a little to fit it. It was in the mid 90's and it was a huge dance hit as well in an alt. version. Also, I think and getting back to the issue, Stevie can sing it like she records it. I think she may not be able to sing it every other night for six months afterward, but she is 55 or so years old - thus, I give her a break.

Older? If I'm reading your statement correctly and you are in fact nearly 35...
That makes me younger - only nearly 24. But I'm happy to know I come off as being older than I am...

Which is a real change from my offline life. Since one of the reasons I stopped working for the local school district is because children as young as fifth grade thought I was one of them and wouldn't take me seriously and teachers and faculty assumed I was one of the students and treated me accordingly.

In dissention's defense, not that he needs anyone to stick up for him - he's doing quite well on his own - His "mack truck" statement came during a discussion of Stevie's rather generously endowed rear end. This discussion - and it still blows me away that anybody could take anything in a discussion about butts seriously - was in fact initiated by a comment from a Stevie fan in reference to Stevie's big rear.

Why would someone be offended for someone calling her ass what it factually is: big. Beyonce has a big ass, too, is anyone offended now that I've said that? We were talking about Stevie's sexiness, of which I find none when it comes to her, and her big ass is part of the matronly look (along with those Reeblechs, limp hair, and frumpy clothes). She's a pretty woman, but I just don't find her sexy or hot. I'm not into grandma's.

The Mack Truck comment wasn't in good taste, I know this, but it was in jest and I could care less if her ass was narrow or wide because she does nothing for me either way.

Well as far as I know my father and mother both lead even more pathetic lives than mine. Although, my dad did used to go on frequent "fishing trips" and would come home with nothing. But in his defense, I have accompanied him on fishing trips and when he casts the line is more likely to end up in a tree than in the water. Which is fine by me, since my views on fishing coincide with those of hunting.

but you never really guff him yet you are comparatively endlessly insulting her and other Ledgies' feeling about her - yes I use insult because your critique is meant to be that and you know it - whether you will admit that or not is another issue  I mean is it really necessary to use words like croak, drone, etc., or to compare her a$$ to a mack truck or whatever it was. Certainly you know when you say that you are hurting people's feelings. yet, you say it - thus, you do not care about doing so
Look at Mr. "Call A Spade A Spade" wondering whether or not it's necessary to point out the truth. Yeah, I said that Stevie "croaked" out Rhiannon cuz she did!! The mack truck comment from Dissention was an exaggertion, but not mine.

If people's love of Fleetwood Mac/Stevie crumples and/or their feelings get hurt at the mention of any criticism perhaps it's time for them to take a long look in the mirror or perhaps consult a therapist. If someone says Stevie's a ugly, old hag that's not going to have any effect on my love for her and her music.

Yeah, I think Lindsey's voice is not so hot anymore- but then again, I never look to Lindsey for his vocal stylings/ability- as far as I'm concerned, his guitar playing is his strong suit. On the other hand, Stevie is a singer- so, when she croaks out "Rhiannon" it's a bigger blow than, say, if Lindsey butchers "Go Your Own Way" with low range flat singing.

Just my opinion.

I think calling a spade a spade is always appropriate and never said any differently; if I did, please show me where I said that. To repeat, I think people can say what they want - who am I to keep them down  I just think people are harsher on La Nicks because they know doing so infuriates the Chiffonheads to no end. Personally, I think the technical def. of croak is appropriate for La Nicks in some moments as she does have a harsh throaty sound.

I think so too. I'm the first - ok, maybe the 5th or sixth - to say Stevie's voice is not always, uh, lovely. But, it's not so much that it hurts my feelings when people say stuff, it's just that I think they are wrong
But I think Stevie has tons of flaws, and am pretty egalitarian about admitting it, even though obviously i will like a lot more of her material that other people don't. But really, I only like 3-5 songs on most of her solo albums - I prefer her with Lindsey, et al, just like I prefer Lindsey with everyone, and Christine with everyone. I mainly get mad when people say..."That's too much booty for a white girl" because now, well, you've insulted ME!!!

yes, that is the way with everyone.
I have taste, it just extends stretchily to Stevie's unorthodox vocal qualities. I have to say, there is, and always has been, a lock-and-key fit in the relationship between that throaty vocal quality and my mind. Which means that I adore it far beyond what most other humans will. Pick any singing girl with the throaty quality, and I will like it. It's almost like people being born gay, I was born with "throaty voice" lust. many times I cringe very, very hard at Stevie's lyrics, (Gaw! sometimes she just lays down some crappy, crappy phrases) but I will still like the song, because "The Voice" is executing it.
But I love Lindsey a lot, and have to say, he kicked much, much ass live throughout the most recent tour. I was bowled over. I think his work is phenomenal, and an equal amount of my favorite songs (if not more) on Say You Will are his, not Stevie's. But, I'm not a super fan of the "excessive guitar" vibe, I like more of the "whole band" vibe. And also, I can never, ever, forget what Stevie did accomplish, when she accomplished it, which, to me, is supernatural. I honestly feel that I will never see that beauty, that beauty, that same, same beauty again. Her live performances, to me, when she's making up crazy harmonies, singing her ass off, sounding great but weird, shaking her thang, with so much passion, can truly never be equaled in my mind. The improv quality of The Lady makes my heart soar. I really think her past vocal facility is unequaled. I might even say, at times, she did so much, with much less than others have.
And I don't mean her range.
Oops, sorry, you made me write a thesis. At the same time, though, I think Lindsey is just as Stupendous, and Chris too, in different ways. :)

Yeah, it's all about preference and personal taste in the end. Whereas you may like her crazy stuff and pulling lyrics out of her hat, I'm much harder to please and would rather see someone come up with a song on the spot a la The Jazz Passengers and just explore their art in a much deeper level. Stew was totally right when he said that I like surprises. I have to be wowed consistently to have anything hold my interest when it comes to music. But, we're all different.

As for the morbidly obese men thing... you have no idea... no idea...

I kid you not I had this one guy going after me who weighed 415 pounds and didn't want to lose any of it because he was convinced that with those big man boobs he could lactate. He wanted me to "suckle" off of them.

Ah, the "Chiffonheads" can go blow me.....

I worship Stevie to the max. I love her a LOT more than Lindsey- way more as a matter of fact. "Croak" perfectly applies to her one-note droning

"All the same- baby, all the same
All the same..."

from Live in Boston. If one can't see that, they they might as well worship at the alter of Britney Spears and Ashleigh Simpson.

One the other end of the spectrum- I was listening to "Sleeping Angel" in the car on the way home from work tonight. That vocal is really, really, unbelievably amazing! WOW!!

You ain't lying on that  Her voice SOARED. She tried so hard to soar on the Enchanted tour during that song. I readily admit she missed on occasion, but when she nailed - tears and lots of them. See, that is why I get, for want of a better word, upset with her. I KNOW she can soar. She did a little during SG on this last tour and she did after the tour for Chris Issak. I think she knows she is a woman in on the downside of 50 who lived a very hard life and is trying to hold onto her voice, impressing only when it seemingly suits her to do so. Yet, the glimpse of the "picture of what [she] used to be] can be glorious a la Beautiful Child on the last tour

I also think she is more interested in singing anything but Rhiannon, Dreams, etc. so she tries harder on those instead of being rote.

I did Noises Off (my favorite  ) when I was in college and that was nerve-wracking. Only did three shows, but still, I thought I was going to pass out because I was so nervous. I didn't do well the first night, I was all over the place. But I thought I did well the other two times. It's exhausting. And if you made any mistakes, you had to cover them up as quick as lightning and incorporate them into the show. That was where I stammered a bit at first.

I love to sing anything, I really do. I have times where I'll sit and sing for hours and sometimes just make **** up. Yeah, it's pretty difficult to sing. Breathing is everything. I have to listen to a song before I do anything to pick out points where I can take a breath, then I run through it quickly to see if it works, and go from there. But Lush Life builds to such a powerful ending that you don't want to overwork your voice or you're dead when you try to hit the high notes at the end, much inth e same way that Forgive and Forget is, another incredibly difficult one to sing. It's so hard getting those notes just right and making the transition form throatiness to almost falsetto. And then stretching those high notes and dropping your voice down a register? Ho****. How Debbie did it every night is a mystery.

Queen Latifah's version of Lush Life from Living Out Loud is one of my favorites, you should check it out.

Queen Latifah's version of Lush Life from Living Out Loud is one of my favorites, you should check it out.

 You're too much, dear.

I love to write songs and that's how I do it, by just singing various melodies and anything that pops into my head. I'm never happier than when I'm singing.
I will look up Lush Life. I don't have much problem switching from throatiness to falsetto, due to my Mac/Blondie/Heart training. Smooth? maybe not always. You know, oddly, I'm not sure i've ever concentrated on forgive and forget...I think I don't find it too hard, is why. Not bragging, just that i'm a girl, so it's probably easier. There aren't too many "sudden note runs", A la Heart, so.. Not to say I can kick it out, cause i'm not sure.
And I'm pretty good at stretching notes (again, with the high ones, it's probably easier cause i'm a girl)
I, too, am never happier than when I'm singing.(which is part of why I love "I sing for the things") Although "playing outside" may run a close second. The making up stuff really gets me off. I love to "practice"
I really admire people who make up lyrics, I never do, although, I suppose, if I took the TIME (barf) i could. My friend, though, she doesn't know what Watergate was, but she makes up these amazing lyrics all the time. So soulful and deep! And, of course, she makes up melodies to go with them. I guess we all have our talents. She really has a hard time being anything but a solo singer, while I long to be backup singer. I love it.
I'd love to see some of your lyrics, by the way. :)

The transitions in that song are shockingly hard to sing. Here's where I run into trouble sometimes:

If you'll forgive me my ferocity (low)
I won't forget your sweetness. (very high)
Pull down the night, lay it before me. (low)
Gratify my head with curses. (very high)

Transitioning into "Gratify my head" is the hardest for me. The rest of the song is pretty much sung using your higher registers, but some of the notes are supposed to be stretched quite a bit and it's a bit taxing after the chorus. I can sing it pretty well now, but htere are times where I cringe. She's got my respect for being able to do it each night. Can you imagine Stevie trying to sing it? Even Le Stew would run away...

I can sing high notes perfectly fine on most songs, it's just that I have trouble going from such high notes to such low ones so abruptly.

It doesn't hurt my feelings or damage my love for Stevie's music when someone criticizes her. I readily admit that I'm not 100% in love with every single thing she's done or sung (I don't believe I've ever said this on here before, but I literally HATE how she sounds on many of the 'Rumours' and 'Tusk' tour live concerts, and can't sit through them -- in much the same way that many people hate how she sounds now, which I, in turn, love).

I don't know about anyone else, but I think the thing that I bristle about most (well, aside from the absolutely crass way certain opinions are expressed -- but that's just my nature and upbringing bristling there) is that sometimes the criticisms seem unending.
I know everyone who criticizes says, "well, I love her, so I can criticize her if I want to"... and that's all well and good. But doesn't anyone other than me ever think that the amount of criticism gets a bit exhausting and oppressive?

Open up a thread about some song or performance, and, oh look, yet ANOTHER complaint. Wow, go figure... wouldn't have expected that! ;)

Truth be told, the complaining and criticizing annoys me as much as the sycophantic ass-kissing... not because of WHAT'S being said, but how often it's being said.

Anyway, that's just my two cents on the matter, and isn't worth any more than that. :)

Hmm, Ok, I see what you are saying. I think it's guy thing, though. It's pretty good that you can do that at all, I would think.
I do best with "high, soaring Blondie". Atomic is really easy, the lyrics you said here aren't too bad, the high parts of Rapture are fine. I have a little trouble on "Call Me" in the midtones. Where she's busting it out, but not high or low? and the transitions in that song are difficult and fast.
Oh, Maria is fairly easy.
It is definitely an ever challenging, exciting vocal journey though, I will say that. And of course I don't sound as good or anything.
Debbie's vocal/mood/style/range skills are...well, is there anything she can't do? On occasion, she can even have throaty voice. :D

Totally true, but at least yesterday the 20056453th reiteration, with some particularly harsh comments, unnerved me a bit. Today, coming to work instead I had listened to a lot of music especially from Stevie and I'm pacified.

You ain't lying on that  Her voice SOARED. She tried so hard to soar on the Enchanted tour during that song. I readily admit she missed on occasion, but when she nailed - tears and lots of them.
It was the "moment" for me of the entire tour. When she did that song, I thought my heart was gonna leap out of my throat it was so good.

See, that is why I get, for want of a better word, upset with her. I KNOW she can soar.
Exactly.
I also think she is more interested in singing anything but Rhiannon, Dreams, etc. so she tries harder on those instead of being rote.
Everytime I see/hear her saying that "Dreams" is her favorite song to sing live, I think she is so full of ****. Her words belie the truth shown in her performances. You would think the setlists they do would drive her batty ala the movie Groundhog Day.

Well, that was a ramble - now what was that about blowing you
    :xoxo:

But doesn't anyone other than me ever think that the amount of criticism gets a bit exhausting and oppressive?
Almost as exhausting and oppressive as the constant blind defense of anything Stevie regardless of the quality or effort.

Maria is my favorite song to let loose on. That chorus is killer. Pop at its finest.

Yes, but quality is subjective. Some people would never accept 'Dogma 95' kind of movies because for them is not cinema. Some great theatre lovers would never like Grotowski. Is Blue by Derek Jarman a real film? Vocal excellence in singers is not important for many, and I'm among them. In the same way, the quality of a performer isn't necessarily linked to her/his mobility, IMO; some (critics or fans, whoever) look at the style and deepness of material, added to the strength of the emotional impact; it's just a different point of view. :)
