And I don't think it's totally dreadful or anything.
She's doing more of a rock & roll thing here than on anything since Bella Donna.
The main issue I have with it is that most of the songs sound like they should've been released in 1990, not 1994. Blue Denim, Listen to the Rain, Love Is Like a River, and Kick It don't sound like anything I was listening to in 1994, at any rate. So, I can see why this album didn't do very well.
I have to say that I prefer the mixes of Destiny, Street Angel, and Rose Garden that appeared on Enchanted. Stripped down is definitely better.
There are some great songs on here, though. I love Greta and Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind. I've always loved Street Angel (the song). Docklands and Jane aren't nearly as bad as everyone here says they are. They're actually pretty good songs. I also really like Just Like a Woman. She should do more Dylan covers!
So, yeah...not a horrible album, but not her best. I still like it better than The Wild Heart.

Anyway, I agree that those songs sound better on the Enchanted box set, and I agree that some kind of have more of an earlier 90s sound than you would expect. I hadn't thought about it before you said that, but I agree.

Not to hijack this thread, but along the lines of stripped down enchanted versions vs. album versions: does anyone know the story? I remember reading somewhere that stevie-on-klonopin heard the album with the final mixes, then managed to get off klonopin and hated the final mixes, she had them remixed and taken into further production (hence why she gets production credit on the album). Is there truth to this? Are the enchanted versions the original mixes?
Michael
and, of course, congrats on a fine purchase

OK, here's the whole Street Angel saga. I think it's been reported here several times before, but it bears repeating because it's so interesting. Most of this info comes from a 1994 radio interview Stevie did six months or so after Street Angel was released. In the interview she basically disowned the album.
The original producer on Street Angel was Glyn Johns; he began working on the project in 1992. He had a specific vision for the album. He wanted it to have an acoustic/country sound and told Stevie that her old friend Waddy Wachtel would NOT be coming in to play on the sessions. Struck speechless and still in her Klonopin haze, Stevie went along with his plan but hated the results she heard. There was little percussion and not much electric guitar. (I've always assumed "Inspiration" and "God's Garden," country-ish songs that didn't end up on the final album, give a real window into Johns' approach.)
He finished the album and returned to his native England. Two months later, Stevie went back into the studio for eight weeks (presumably with Thom Panunzio), this time with Waddy, Mike Campbell and Peter Michael (percussion) in tow. They added more guitars and remixed everything.
She was unhappy with her vocals, too, but left them mostly untouched. The time had come simply to give up and let the album go.
I'm pretty sure this was all before she kicked Klonopin. Her opinion of the album seems to have plummeted even further after rehab, though.
As for where the "Enchanted" mixes come from, I don't know. Maybe those songs were remixed specifically for the boxed set. Anyone?

What's everyone prob wth Stevie singing about a freaking Chimpanzee. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I really like Jane, but LOVE Kick It, Docklands, Blue Denim, Street Angel, Love Is LIke a River and Just Like a Woman. The only song I hate is Unconditional Love.

Then she kicked Klonopin, went back to the studio and was horrified by her vocals. She re-recorded some, but not as many as she wanted. Still not pleased with the album, she finally decided to stop tinkering and "let it go."
From what Stevie has said, she didn't redo any of the vocals. She gave an interview where she said that she messed with everything else, but completely ignored the awful vocals.

I don't think she necessarily "didn't give a damn"... I think she cared as much as she COULD care about anything during that period of time. It just didn't match her level of commitment prior to that or in the years since.
And it's funny, because I don't find that album or any of her material from that era to be depressing, because I think it's a great example of the human spirit pushing forth through adversity. You know what I mean?
I can almost hear in her voice that she's TRYING to get back to what she used to be. She's struggling in places, but there's still that glimmer of "The Stevie Of Old," who's scratching and clawing her way back.
Anyway... that's not a "defense of Stevie," it's just what I come away from the songs with. :)

The lack of passion or conviction that she puts into that train-wreck of an album is what ruins it for me. The material itself is awful at best (most of it was either written by someone else or pilfered from the RAL sessions), but if there was any emotion or power put into some of it, it would be tolerable. But as is? Bloody awful, IMO. She just sounds like she doesn't give a fiddler's fig. If Stevie Nicks can't sell the lines she's singing, she's not Stevie Nicks to me. And that is why I don't listen to it: it's not Stevie.
Just my opinion. :woohoo:

Honestly, no, I don't know what you mean. That album epitomizes depression and a lack of interest for me. It is uncreative, boring, stiff, and a mess of bad production, writing, and singing. Her life sucked at that point and her music showed it. I've no use for it and take comfort in the fact that I'm not the only who dislikes it, Stevie herself does, too.
I don't expect anyone to agree with me, but that's how I've felt since I was 14. As much of a fan of hers that I am, Street Angel is, without a doubt, one of the worst records I've ever heard in my life.

Stevie hates that album because she hates that period of her life. That's understandable.
But I still think she's wrong to distance herself so far from it... it's not the horrible train wreck of an album you and so many other people make it out to be. It's an album of rather subdued, "no frills" songs, which are ultimately beautiful. And, at times I find it to be quite inspired.
To me, at least.
But, as with anything "Stevie," I'd never expect everyone to love it or appreciate it, because it's all a matter of taste.

I completely agree and I think the same thing when i listen to it. When i first heard the song "blue denim" on the radio i was excited cause it sounded more rock and roll and straightforward to me. And most of the album follows suit.
How can anyone say she sounds like she didn't give a damn? Some of those vocals are so feisty (sp?) and energetic. Listen to the endings of "blue denim" and "love is like a river". But yet she can still convict her melancholy
in "rose garden" and "destiny" (although i don't listen much to the latter).

yeah, "jane" doesn't do much for me either. i've tried to like it. i really think it's the actual music for me. it sounds cheezy. i'm sorry ms. goodall.
I still like it better than The Wild Heart.
i actually do too. i don't listen to TWH that much. It's not a bad album but just not one of my favorites. Maybe it's cause i heard it so much when it came out.
i could do without "jane", "just like a woman", and "listen to the rain". sorry, i love dylan but i just don't care for this version. I DO think they should have included, or replaced the songs above with "inspiration" and "god's garden."
still puzzled over why b-sides become such.

I thought it was very sad when Stevie admitted last year that she had not listened to Street Angel since it was released. I guess the one Irish fan then told her it was his favorite album and she said she did realize that it had some good points and she was going to go back to the hotel and listen to it. I find the album depressing because I know the backstory. I cannot listen to it without thinking about how Stevie was at that time in her life. That is why I do not like it , plus I am not a fan of most of the songs in general. The only songs I like are Destiny, Rose Garden and Blue Denim. The first two were written in the seventies and Blue Denim is about Lindsey and most of the time she writes compelling lyrics when she is writing about him. Other than that, the album is really awful IMHO. It is just really sad to think that Stevie has distanced herself so much from that album that she can't even listen to it.
Anyway, the album signifies a bad time in her life. You can see the decline of her work and it hits rock bottom with Street Angel. Looking back, it really gives me perspective into her pain and struggles during those eight years. I am relieved and thankful she made it through those years, relatively unscathed. I guess Street Angel will always be a reminder to Stevie of how bad things can really get. On the other hand, it can also be a reminder to her of how far she has come, how many demons she has battled successfully. She is one strong lady and I admire the fact that she talks about those years in hopes that she may help someone else.
That takes alot of courage.

Solo Stevie is an acquired taste, IMO. It takes a lot of determination and a strong stomach to have stuck with Stevie as practically each album got a bit lower in quality than the last. I was ready to bail with Street Angel, no lie. Love her with the Mac, trepidacious when it comes to her solo music. RAL and SA are just unbearable to me. When she's good, she's really good (Wild Heart, most of Trouble In Shangri-La, Bella Donna, etc.). I can't stand the production on the Mirror album, but the material was so good for the most part that I love it anyways. I think not being in a band atmosphere compromises her judgement when it comes to what's good and what isn't, but that's just me.

I remember the retelling of that story and it really is incredibly sad. IMO, much of that album was her grasping for air when she realized she was sinking both in life and as an artist. She was more than likely so down on herself and knew she had to put out an album as per her contract so she just did what she could to keep herself together and pay her dues. Point being, when many were about to "bail" on Street Angel, so was she. Well said, Kel.

Meh...
I prefer her solo. RAL and OSOTM are my favorites, so I think that (coupled with the fact that Sable on Blond *woof* is your favorite song :p ;) ) says a lot about our differences in taste. :)
Personally, I'm beginning to think that Stevie might be being a bit of a drama queen when she talks about how terrible Street Angel is. I think a lot (most?) of it sounds horribly dated for 1994, and that's why it didn't sell. But I don't think it's the train wreck everyone else seems to think it is.
But like I say, RAL and OSOTM are my favorite Stevie albums, so maybe you can't go by me. :D

Not favorite, but one of them. :p
I just don't care for a lot of her material on her albums. She couldn't pick a good cover tune if it flew up and bit her in the ass. The absence of Lindsey and everyone else results in us getting stuck with turds like That Made Me Stronger, Too Far From Texas, Unconditional Love, Fire Burning, and so on. But, then again, we did get Silver Girl, When I See You Again, Seven Wonders, and Welcome To the Room, so...

Fire Burning, and so on.
What's wrong with this song? Good lyrics. Good music. Good tone.
Sorry, I missed the Street Angel thread.....I could praise it all day! :wavey:

Everytime A Street Angel thread comes up...These same old long diatribes arise....(yawn)
well all this controversy must mean the cd is worth talking about! ;)
Aside from us being somewhat skewed by what Stevie herself has said about this body of work (bear in mind, it was said in the "drama of the moment") and directly after it was apparent the CD had no chance in hell of being a success....
This CD was dated before it ever hit the streets in June 1994....Stevie wasnt on the pulse of music at that time. (Stone Temple Pilots, grunge rock etc..) So you could argue it was her choice of producers (Glyn Johns)-who was a has been from the 70's... or even her choice in collaboraters or lack therin.
In the early days Stevie was instinctive and knew what she liked and collaborated with the best of that time (Tom Petty and Prince) being prime examples...
So aside from the Street Angel being dated for 1994....more importantly the project lacked vision and cohesiveness.....the songs individually are not terribly bad (except maybe unconditional love and that chimpanze line...although the acoustic demo of UL is actually moving stripped down)...so it really does come down to execution here.
With TISL, Stevie bounced back amazingly to form, She had the vision and the instincts of past, the cd sounded fresh and contemporary and she once again collaborated with the best of that time - Hopefully she will be matched with some formidable collaborators on her next project.

Like I said, this really is the only huge problem I see with the album (and it is a big one).
Although, I'm not sure Stevie should have tried her hand at grunge rock. Still, there were a lot of great female artists at the time (Lisa Loeb, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl, etc.) that she could have taken a cue from.
There are a few songs that sound sort of with the time, but the big rock numbers (Love Is Like a River, Blue Denim, etc.) sound like they escaped from a Lita Ford album.

Good point. You don't like The Wild Heart, if I remember correctly? And I think that's insane..lol. But, I'll respect your opinion.
That would be me. I like the songs, but just not all on the same album.same goes for OSTOM. They are both downers, IMO. Here's the order I like the albums (not including Enchated and Timespace).
Street Angel
TISL
Rock A Little
Bella Donna
Wild Heart
OSTOM

Come on... as mediocre as Street Angel is, it's not as awful as Lisa Loeb! :)
