View Full Version : Eternally cool bands?

I thought I would ask you guys' opinions on this..there are many excellent bands/artists that have been around forever, some I love some I don't. The question is which artists/bands do you think have remained eternally "cool" ?
Now when I say "cool" I mean to most people...there are plenty of bands I love and think are cool but not to most...and they probably have just as many fans...but for some reason there are some bands that it's ALWAYS cool to like...who do you think?
My list is here :
Aerosmith
U2
Beetles
Rolling Stones
Metallica
Chris

Beetles? Never heard of 'em ...I do, however, love The Beatles :xoxo: ;)
It has not always been cool to like them though - in 7th grade up until the Beatles Anthology came out I was made fun of mercilessly because of my Beatle love....then it got all "trendy" with the anthology...urgh...don't get me started...
Anyway...
I agree with Aerosmith and I'll add
The Doors to that :)

Same here, sista friend. If I never see Bono again in my life, I won't be sad. They suffer from Paris Hilton Syndrome: too much exposure.
Bowie is eternally cool. He's the man. :woohoo:

The bands that I see that seem to be cool across several generations are: The Beatles, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, and The Grateful Dead. Also, it seems that if you died young, you are eternally cool as well like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison.

They didn't have the chance to do infomericals and perfume ads. That's why they are still "cool".

Johnny Cash is a cool choice...
I dunno about years ago...I guess the retro thing is in now...but I see young teens wearing RAMONES t shirts...especially at the Green Day concert I saw lots of kids wearing RAMONES Tshirts. I don't know how U2 always manages to stay "cool." I do like them although.
I guess I'm just thinking of people my age...many ppl my age like older music like U2, The Who, Talking Heads, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, etc...but not so much people like Bowie, Blondie, etc...maybe it depends on the area of the world you're in as well.
Interesting topic though I thought. Fleetwood Mac has gotten much more "cool" since the dance, not in all circles....but overall I would say

Yet most of those kids who wear those Ramones shirts would scratch their heads at the mere mention of Television, Talking Heads, and Blondie. It bugs me to no end how kids these days say they're into the "retro thing," yet have no clue about those types of bands from back in the day.

I think you're right. It has a lot to do with where you live. Those in, say Alabama, for example, don't have the exposure to bands and artists like Bowie, Blondie, and the Talking Heads like those in the cities do. I think it's a "cultural" issue more than anything. Big cities like Boston and New York nurture music and the arts, whereas it's very different in other parts of the country.

In some of the previous posts, people were questioning whether or not Fleetwood Mac is an eternally cool band. Several people seem to be leaning toward the idea that they are not eternally cool.
Well, the more I have thought about whether Fleetwood Mac belongs on the eternally cool list, the more I realized that they do belong here. They have evolved and been around for five decades. They still have a large following. Large amounts of people still come to see them in concert, and these concerts aren't in some small venues but large arenas. We have several, young people on The Ledge here. Therefore, they are still gaining fans. They have a special style and sound that is like no other band, and this is an element you need to be eternally cool. They have band members who people still find beautiful and sexy. For all of these reasons, and several more, I believe Fleetwood Mac is an eternally cool band.

For my Dad it was the Beatles and John Lennon's solo stuff, also the Bee Gees. He's the big music fan of my folks. My Mom rarely knows the names of any songs or bands. My brother and I picked up the love for music, he loves GnR. Too bad they don't really exist anymore and haven't for a long time. But he likes VR, who I am listening to right now, Illegal i Song.

For those who listed No Doubt...I don't know about that. I love No Doubt, but will they be cool in say, 10 years? Or will people be talking about them like they're just that band that was cool in the mid to late 90s? Even if Gwen proves to have a long and successful solo career, that'll be her and not the band. So, I don't think you can put them with bands like The Beatles or Fleetwood Mac at this point. I know there are different definitions of "cool," but I don't think we can say they're eternally cool yet.

The Hunter is just...very out there. If you heard The Beast or Dragonfly, you'd know what I mean. Not many slow songs, no. It's a lot darker than the other albums (though not as dark as No Exit), like War Child, for example. You just don't expect Debbie Harry to haul out and write a song about children suffering and being tortured in the Middle East. It's one of my personal favorite albums, though.

Ugh, a total asshole. We went to eat at the restaurant she chose and she was incredibly rude to the waitress. Went so far as to tell her that she didn't have all night to wait around for her food and that her tip would be jeopardized.
Then she wanted to go to a music store and shop aorund for awhile, so we did. She picked apart everything I bought or even picked up. Told me that Blondie sucked and that Debs was a "bloated wreck," that Franz Ferdinand annoyed her, that Nina Simone sounds like "nails on a chalkboard," and that David Bowie is a "closeted queen." And then she bought Michael Jackson's Number Ones. Regardless of her behavior at the restaurant, I could never date anyone with such poor taste in music.

So, the music is just as good on the Hunter, and fast, but it's kinda dark...
Wow, she really was an a**hole! I thought you were exaggerating. I can't believe she said that about Nina and Blondie! And the waitress?! OMigaw! How'd you pick that one? I can usually tell if i do or don't like someone fairly quickly when i'm face to face with them. I guess people can trick you a little, though...I would've been sooooo embarrassed if someone i was with said that to the waitress. Unless, maybe, if the waitress was really insufferable, rude, slow, rude, and all that. Geesh.

Beats me how I picked her, my asshole detector must have been shorting out.
There is nothing tackier than threatening to withhold tips. I wanted to leave right then and there. And I didn't even really eat the food because I was afraid the waitress spit in it or coughed up a phlegmglobber.
My big problem with her at the music store was how loud and obnoxious she was. If you don't like a band or a particular artist, go ahead and say so. But don't scream across the store at the top of your lungs "DEBORAH HARRY IS A BLOATED WRECK!" I mean, where did she learn how to act in public? I felt like telling her that I wasn't ready to have kids yet and I didn't want practice raising one by taking her out. I had my Franz CD playing in the car when I drove her home just to piss her off, too. At least I had something fabulous to listen to, as opposed to her obnoxious mouth.

you didn't happen to get her b-day/sign, did you? man, that really sucks.
Awhile ago when i was out at a bar, having a really good time, i was outside talking to some people, and this guy asked me out on a date. He said some complimentary things, and was ok looking, but i thought "he seems boring".
He was a person who hanglides, though, and i wanted to know more about that since i always wanted to go hangliding. Sure enough, i went on a date with him, and he was deadly boring. Then, after we ate i was at his house, and for one thing he showed me some hangliding videos of him. not to bad, but not to interesting, either. But then, he was like "I write music" (can i ever date someone who's not a musician? sheesh) and i thought..."uh oh", but i'm nice,( ) so I was like, ok. He breaks out his guitar, and starts singing this incredibly cheesy song that he wrote. He played ok, and sang well, but the song was just so cheesy and melodic and.... just gooshy soft, that i couldn't handle it. I was like "whoa, dude, you're too sensitive, and not funny enough, for me"  Obviously, i didn't say that, but...I did note for like, the fifth time, that i probably shouldn't date Libras...
That date was a super cake walk compared to yours, though.

Speaking of CCR...guess who's doing Crossroads (show on CMT) with John Fogerty?
Give up?
KEITH URBAN!! It airs on February 19th!! I entered a contest in the fan club to try to win tickets. It's being filmed in L.A. in like a week or so.
It was just announced that Keith Urban is headlining the Ford Center in OKC on March 10,2005 (Which will work out perfectly for us since Deb has a Dr.appt that afternoon in OKC)
Should be a great show at a great (And huge) concert venue.
